REPORT: ‘GMA3: What You Need to Know’ Survives Behind the Scenes Staffing Cuts Ending Speculation of a Replacement Series
GMA 3: What You Need to Know, the low rated third-hour spinoff show of Good Morning America which has undergone massive layoffs behind the scenes, leading to the possibility the show would be canceled, looks like it will live on to see another day, according to the New York Post.
During a all-hands on deck town hall meeting on Tuesday in New York, Almin Karamehmedovic, who took over as ABC News president last summer, reportedly assured the employees that were remaining, that his department, ABC news, had no intention of gutting completely GMA3 any further.
An NY Post sources shared, “The hour is not going away, the show is not going away and the anchors aren’t going away.” The series is co-anchored by Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan, who took over the show in 2023 following the scandal involving previous co-hosts T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach.

Back on March 9th, Michael Fairman TV reported, that ABC News gutted the staff of daytime series, GMA 3: What You Need to Know, including its executive producer Catherine McKenzie in a restructuring move where close to 200 jobs across ABC News and Disney Entertainment Networks were ended, and that the duties for the show would now fall on to the production team in charge of Good Morning America.
Executive producer Simone Swink will now oversee all “GMA”-branded shows across all time slots as the network said goodbye to GMA 3’s EP, Catherine McKenzie, who has been with the series since 2020.
In a memo send out by Karamehmedovic following the initial layoffs, the source said it read, in part: “The entire industry has been challenged, and restructuring the way we operate has, unfortunately, had an impact on some of our colleagues. As we look ahead, our mission is simple: straightforward journalism.”
With the current success of CBS launching Beyond the Gates, and it being the first soap opera on network television in 25 years, ABC did have an opportunity here to rethink its strategy in the long-term and perhaps replace GMA3 with a new soap or remount a version of All My Children or One Life to Live. Clearly, GMA3 is a much cheaper show to produce in the current climate, where budgets are key for daytime executives, while soaps are much more expensive to mount and continue.
So, what do you think of the report that GMA3 will conton the air? Did you hope it would be canceled? Comment below.
Good for them and those who still are employed at the talker.
I don’t watch GMA 3 and never did. Honestly, with GMA, other talk shows and way too many hours of local news (6.5 hours a day), I was hoping ABC would take the leap and reboot a former soap or develop a new soap, but nope. It’ll just be more boring news coverage.
WHO CARES,Does abc give you money to report about a dumb magazine show that took all my children away
GMA3 is the replacement for “The Chew”, the show which replaced AMC. GMA3, despite its misgivings, is not to blame for AMC’s cancellation.
All my hopes for a OLTL reboot are once again dashed. Thanks for the big tease ABC !
ABC can choke on it, They will never bring back a new soap. General Hospital will be cancelled sooner than later. Quit watching 1 year ago. I watch Beyond The Gates Y&R and Days Of Our Lives.
Not interested, will never watch it!
We know they are not in the business of soaps everyone get used to it CBS is the only network invested as many fans gh has ABC is not behind it and GMA is the absolute worst of all of the daily news programs within 30 minutes of the first hour it’s all fluff
Literally, nobody except hopeful soap fans speculated GMA3 was going away. If ABC wanted the show to go away, it would have been canceled. Cutting the budget showed they were trying to save it, as was perfectly obvious to everyone except those still mourning AMC and OLTL.
While I don’t want anyone to lose their jobs, GMA3 is really not needed. Another soap would’ve been amazing, especially considering how well Beyond The Gates is doing. You can tell the network and the NAACP are behind it. The promos, the writing is a BREATH of fresh air! Compared to Y&R where the stories move at a snails pace, BTG is totally the opposite.
I wish Y&R would axe Josh Griffith and don’t even get me started on B&B.
I am still not convinced another successful soap or scripted drama can’t be done again during daytime hours. Maybe 30 minutes instead of an hour. Please no more game or talk shows. It’s great Beyond the Gates is doing so well so far.
CBS and Paramount Plus please consider doing a one week return to Oakdale or Springfield series for streaming with some of our old soap stars to give us some closure. I know when the Talk had on the cast of As the World Turns or Guiding Light on it was some of the talk shows highest rated episodes. You did it with Star Trek and it worked out well.
Our ABC Station here in Miami Florida WPLG will be loosing ABC in August 2025 due to ABC not willing to contract negotiations by refusing any increase in payments.
WPLG han been with ABC for over 65 years!
I think they will rethink Gma give sometime Abc soap will back
Sad news as this would be a great opportunity to bring on another soap. GMA3 is a ratings nightmare.
Absolutely they should consider putting outlet and amc back in that time slot
The new GMA3 is AWFUL Embarrassed for you! The best part of GMA3 was the medical advice and medical issues. Just now, awkward transition to Breaking News. The people on the set are news people (except for pop girl). Have some control, they could have tossed to special report. So sloppy and unprofessional. Hasn’t been the same for some time now. And now, it’s off the rails!!!!
Where is Dr. Sutton? We all including his colleagues looked forward to Dr. Sutton sharing important and very useful medical information and advice. You engaged the audience with individuals writing with medical questions and concerns. It really is or was the only real medical communication the public is getting about medical health including disease alerts, the latest medical studies, proactive or preventive care, the list is endless. Please bring him back.
