Days Of Our Lives
NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt Addresses DAYS Future: "It's Not Going Anywhere!"
For the foreseeable future it appears that Days of our Lives is not on the chopping block and going anywhere! This vote of confidence came yesterday at the current TCA (Television Critics Association) Winter Press Tour!
According to TV Line, NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt expressed that Days of our Lives would remain on the air beyond its current contract cycle, which expires in September.
Greenblatt started, “I think Days is going to stick around. I don’t know that I’m at liberty to say that officially yet, but it’s not going anywhere.”
This would seem good news for DAYS fans, whose favorite soap has been last in the ratings of all four of the remaining network soap operas, and has been hitting recent record lows in the key female 18-49 demo. Many had been concerned that if DAYS did not perk up in the ratings rather quickly it could be canceled.
So soapers, are you happy to hear the news that DAYS should be sticking around? What are your thoughts to now improve the show so it has staying power? Let us know!

Monday on Entertainment Tonight, the second set of nominations for the 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards were announced which included the highly-coveted Outstanding Lead Performance in a Daytime Drama Series – Actress and Outstanding Daytime Talk Series.
ET followed suit after Extra announced the nominees, as previously reported, in the Outstanding Lead Performance in a Daytime Drama Series – Actor and Outstanding Daytime Talk Host.
Now, five leading ladies of the soaps are vying for the gold for Lead Actress and the category marked the first-ever nominations for CBS daytime’s Beyond the Gates when two actresses made the final cut. Only General Hospital is not represented among the actresses this year after Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) took home the trophy last year.

Given Comcast’s budget cutting ways across NBC, I really lost all hope — especially since we have had to wait until now for any sign. Instead, I put all of my hope into Prospect Park saving “Days.” So now, I can thank NBC and Comcast, and hope that by the time NBC ever decides to cancel the only show I watch, Prospect Park will be a well-established company to keep us “Days” fans going!
Thank goodness!!! Great news!!! Thank you NBC and Comcast! It remains my favourite soap since ATWT was cancelled, and I try and champion it any time I can. I always try and look at the positives going on, even when some of the stuff on and off screen aren’t so positive.
As far as the “ratings” go, I think it’s counterproductive, and sort of useless, to say DAYS is in last place. With only 4 soaps left, is it really still a race? And when we’re all trying to be supportive and upbeat about the situation, isn’t it wrong of us, the fans, to say who the least watched show is?
I agree the rating race should not be soap against soap, but how the soap is doing in comparison to the other shows in the same time slot that are not a soap. I bet in those races Days is doing better than some boring talk snooze or pop culture dribble.
Thanks Jules – No… it’s not a race….
I agree Jules, since ATWT was cancelled, I have gotten into DAYS, a series I used to hate. But now, I couldn’t imagine my life without it. My Horton Christmas’ are a nice piece offering for my Snyder Christmas’.
That’s great to hear Scott. It’s the only soap I make sure I watch. Through it all I- wacky stories, boring stories, hilarious and dramatic stories- I recognize what this show is, what it’s about and who they are. I lost that with GH years ago and never found it with YR or BB.
I hope you continue to see DAYS as a family-centered show at its core, and support it through its glorious highs and unfortunate lows.
Mary- It’s funny, even on DAYS’s worst day, it still gets better ratings than just about EVERY show on the “major network” CW…..in their primetime lineup! And yet DAYS/daytime is in trouble?
I’m glad to .hear that Days won’t be cancelled . I really like that show .
knowing that DAYS has always been near the bottom or bottomed out… LOL… is a moot point…. NBC and/or comcast would be remiss… stupid, to let their one soap go… take heed and/or notice….. ABC fans retaliated…. Serials do have an audience… and IF WELL DONE… put some money, loosen the purse strings… LET THE ONE SOAP… DOOL be a shining example of how good it was, is, and will continue to be.
A Major Network without a Soap….. NEVER SHOULD HAPPEN!
My one wish…. BRING BACK CHRISTIE CLARK! for Rafe, Marlena, and Sammi.
Agree that no major network should be without a soap, and to bring back Christie Clark as Carrie!
Would love for Christie to come back, baby in tow – Austin ??? Not so much. That would wake Rafe up!
Oh that would be awesome!
Yeah, bring back Carrie for Rafe and have Sami be with Lucas!
It seems that NBC learned from ABC/D’s debacle!
Better writers … make Ejami Days super couple ..there lacking in that department . When Ejami on ratings are through the roof …..why dont they get the message already …
EJami would ruin ratings. I know I would hate to see them together and don’t see any connection between them.
No Ejami would be far superior to putting her with that horrible Rafe again. The new writers fucked up the great Lucas/Sami/EJ triangle that was going…
I agree, EJami fans are now in the minority, shockingly. People aare tired of them and wanna see SAFE!!!
I’d rather see Sami and Lucas reunite out of all of her pairings on the series. EJami are boring and stale.
^ Disagree. I don’t know where you’re getting the idea that EJami fans are now a minority, but they are as rabid, militant and loyal as ever. In fact, I’m seeing the exact opposite- SAFE fans are really losing their numbers, while EJami is as strong as ever. Am I correct? Who knows, it’s all subjective unless we gather every EJami and SAFE fan around the world and count them. Point is, IMO, EJami together would do more for the ratings than Jim Reilly coming back from the grave and putting together a convoluted but ratings winner plot.
As a long time soap opera viewer, I learned one thing about love triangles and it is this- the best triangles are the ones that have the viewer as conflicted who should be with who as the person in the center of triangle is. As a viewer when I see Sami with EJ, I want her to be with him, but then when I see her with Rafe, I want her to be with him. It was the same with the Sami, Lucas and Austin triangle. The worse triangles are those you really don’t give a flying fig who the center of the triangle ends up with- like the Steffy, Hope Liam fiasco on B&B.
A great triangle should have you constantly changing your mind who should be with who- and for me the best triangle I ever saw on a soap was the Steve/ Alice and Rachel triangle. I went back and forth for years -just like Steve did, and that is what makes it a great triangle- being taken on an emotional roller-coaster ride, otherwise, it just dull as dirt.
They are, however, changing the name to Days of Daniel Jonas’ Life next September during their annual “reboot”. SIGH!
I never did understand why this character (Daniel) who had no real ties to any long standing family on the show, suddenly became one of their leading men. The very fact they had to find a way to have him related to a Horton ( Maggie’s stolen egg- really??) was quite the stretch. It would have made more sense just to bring back Mike Horton if you needed a doctor for the show- and they are number of MIA Hortons and Bradys out there to bring back rather than make a character who was most likely only suppose to be a temp- one of the major players.
Hello…???? I couldn’t agree more… LOL…. it’s disheartening…
He’s the one male actor i have a hard time believing… it’s really stretching to catch on to him…. I mean, according to fans… Rafe cannot act… and I digress, because of the looks factor… but.. Daniel… I just patiently watch his scenes… I am buying… his mother/son act… and that could be thanks to Suzanne Rogers.. Maggie. I SO WANTED IT TO BE MADISON, who was Maggies long lost child… this would have clearly established and gave roots to Madison… no such luck…
and, i will give props to Daniels chemistry with Crystal Chappelle.. and his daughter Melanie.
now.. he’s further entrenched in days with Chloes son Parker….
the last Mike Horton (Roark Critchlow) was really… good… when he was involved with Carrie…
Couldn’t agree more with Dr. Daniel ! He’s so damn dull really. And Maggie being in his face every 5 minutes is like an Oedipus complex. Weird.
I am happy about that as long as: 1) James Scott stays on the show-when he goes, I go. 2) Sami stays away from EJ. I think it would be great if Ari Zucker was allowed to show her funny side.
I agree, I am tired of EJami, brong on EJOLE!
I loved EJ and Nicole together, but they’ve ruined them far too much beyond repair. I’m tired of their continued reunions then splits because someone cheated or the DiMera name came into something of power, again.
Nicole turned into someone I hated with EJ. Their connection was beautiful, but the outcome was too nasty.
Days has huge viewership on NBC’s website. I agree that the show needs better writers. And it sucks that any changes you have to wait 3 months before you see them since they film that far ahead.
Eileen Davidson as Kristen is really the only interesting thing going on Days. She has really brought it again and gives John, Marlena, and Brady interesting story!
Will’s story was the interesting and best story until he got mixed in with Gabi and now it sucks! Any story having Gabi in it is going to really suck.
And why is Eric a priest? You know it’s not going to last long, especially when the actor is hot as hell. He will not be a priest come summer time when it’s time to be shirtless that’s for sure! And that I am thankful for! lol
I agree with you! Eric is gorgeous! He has done an excellent job playing a Priest, but you know this is just a build up to a more involved storyline for him. No one stays that good in Salem for long. Summer cannot come quick enough!
I agree… however, my concern… for such a high calibur talent… and fans will agree.. that if the writing isn’t up to par… i’m closely watching how well Kristen is being written… that they not waste any more talent… and Eric has that in spades… PLEASE…. WRITERS…. FLESH OUT Greg Vaughn… however, long he lasts as a priest… just don’t waste him. it’s agonizing enough… but, he’s worth the wait… GOOD STORIES.. will enliven the cast and FANS.
I don’t like Gabi having her own storyline at all.
All I know is if my priest looked like Eric- I be going to church everyday, winter, summer, spring and fall
OMG me too! Not too long ago I saw a priest on General Hospital that was sexy as hell! I thought the same thing about him, I would be anywhere he was, priest or not! lmao
Don’t count on the word of ANY sleazy network executive.ABC moved All My Children to California with
similar assurances.
Greenblatt is a little higher up than Frons was…
I would think they would at least let Days make it to its 50th anniversary. Their numbers may not be huge, but Days still has a following of many loyal fans. If they keep the budget, so they can make a profit, and have some decent storylines and characters with romance and intrique, they could keep their fan base coming back for more, and keep the show going for awhile. To cancel Days and put on another talk show, they would lose having a loyal group who watches regularly.
VERY good news! Go soaps!
Thank God!… or NBC!
Amen, man
Kind of surprised.
Given that NBC has a lot of problem areas in primetime (especially starting now from January to August when “Sunday Night Football” is out of season) that need fixing more urgently, as well as a myriad of issues with the “Today” show, those are probably among the few factors keeping “Days” afloat for now. Because let’s be honest- “Days” is beyond boring, the writing quality has gone sharply downhill since just after the Olympics break, and the ratings clearly reflect that- they’re awful.
IMO, it’s a major problem that the show films so far ahead (reportedly about 4 months). If/when storylines clearly aren’t working and even if changes are actually made in the writing stages, it will take at least as long as that for the changes to show up on camera. That’s much too long, causing tons of viewers to flee. The other remaining soaps (even the recently cancelled ones) only taped 5-6 weeks ahead. (“Days” filmed its 12,000th episode, airing this Friday 1/11, in late September!!)
From the outside, it seems hard to believe that NBC is actually making $$$ or at least breaking even on an show where the production values seem to be quite low. If the ratings drop any further (esp among 18-49 females), the budget will surely have to be cut even more. Do they really want to get to a point where “Days” needs to use even more newbies and switch to cheap, outdoor shooting a la “Guiding Light” toward the end (2008-09)? That would be an embarrassment and it’s certainly where it could be headed if things don’t pick up. Didn’t NBC/Comcast recently reportedly fire/lay off a bunch of crew members in LA, many of whom worked behind the scenes at “Days”? I wonder what kind of effect that will have, if any.
I’d like to believe Mr. Greenblatt, but I learned quite a while ago not to trust network executives when speaking out about a soap’s fate. They won’t state point blank that a show will be cancelled until they actually do it. (Remember ABC/Brian Frons stating two years ago that “AMC” and “OLTL” were both safe? I rest my case.) For “Days” fans, hopefully the show can get more time to pull out of this slump and pick up some steam, which it needs in the worst way.
You seem to not be very knowledgeable in some areas that you stated as NBC doesn’t have to pay for the production on the show, they don’t own DAYS, Sony does. All NBC has to do is pay for the license fee to air the show, that’s why it keeps living past its expiration date. Sony does everything in its power to cheapen the license fees because the show is still doing well overseas like B&B is so its a good small asset for Sony to have.
For Comcast to have a show this dirt cheap and have it draw 2-4 million viewers a week to their website is something they don’t want to lose since Comcast is big on making money from its content.
I don’t like the idea of the show filming that far ahead either, that’s something that needs to change.
Greenblatt is different from the other executives, his word has been true since he got in there and plus he’s a soap guy at heart. He even stated around the time AMC and OLTL got cancelled that he wanted OLTL but ABC/Disney denied them so maybe he still wants to get the soap division back up and running there.
Anybody who believed Frons is an idiot. I knew AMC and OLTL was a goner back in 2009 when the division was trying to move both soaps to save money. It was just a matter of time before they pulled the plug and it was unexpectedly longer than what I thought as that didn’t come until April 2011.
You both make good points to think about. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and perspectives. I enjoyed reading them.
I’m happy Days is sticking around BUT they really, really, really need to move these stories along faster!!! Nothing is happening day to day. We get a little breakthrough here & there (John finding Kristen with Brady was good) but they are so few & far between that it’s a struggle to stay awake watching this. Where is our leading lady Hope? Peter Reckell not being on the show is a huge loss. The whole world revolving around Sami is boring; bring back Christie Clark. Jen & Daniel are worse than watching paint dry! She’s become so drab and he’s just damn dull.
So, if Days is to stick around, they need to do inject some fire into this show like GH which rocks at all cylinders!!
Funny post! ITA!
thank you 🙂
THIS IS FANTASTIC NEWS!!!!!!!!
I know NBC is invested in keeping Days of our Lives on television. I don’t want it to be cancelled anytime soon. It’s easily the best soap on air, with Y&R slowly creeping back to that spot for me. The stories are just too good right now on the over-all, and the return of classic characters is amazing. Now they need to bring a couple of other characters back and give me more #WilSon scenes.
This is wonderful news! I’m enjoying Days very much. I think (omo) all the networks got a big wake up call with ABC’s soap killing fiasco. Soap viewers are very loyal and will not automatically tune into worthless, useless, and stupid talk shows.
Unless some serious changes are made to revamp and add life to this show in the near future, I see only a small percentage of current viewers, especially younger ones, “sticking around” to watch this daily snoozefest. Days is as exciting as watching recycled paint dry and I literally fall asleep watching. It just moves way too slowly and they have to start filming closer to the air dates. No surprise it’s dead last in women 18-49s.
Note to Ken Corday and his staff: Wake up and get with the times!
Good news for DAYS and the soap genre. It looks were going to have 6 soaps on the air by this time next year. Before 2012 it looked like Y&R and B&B would be the only two left.
Unlike in the Zucker era it seems like NBC is very committed to the show these days. The show does need a few changes I think in order to draw some new or returning viewers in but they’ve been real consistent ratings wise.
NBC should definitely look into giving DAYS some help and rexpand daytime by adding at least another soap next to DAYS maybe reviving Guiding Light or As the World Turns if P&G lets them.
Why go for CBS shows, NBC had a great soap in Another World, also an P&G product they could bring back in a rebooted half an hour form- it was because of AW I got hooked on Days, I would turn on the set about 5 minutes before AW and catch the last scene of Days, eventually I was turning the set on earlier and earlier until I was watching the whole hour and then staying for AW. If Dallas can come back, maybe AW could too.
NBC should have grabbed GL or ATWT when they had the chance. I also could’ve seen AMC on NBC. But I think NBC wanted to keep it’s highest ranking soap and put their whole powers into it.
And if anything, FOX should have picked up GL, ATWT and AMC, which would have made them officially a major network station!
I am happy it is staying on air, but I think new storylines are needed. The show sucks now. The Sami love triangle is old news, and many people are tired of EJami. Lucas needs a storyline, make a triangle between him, Rafe and Sami. Bring Carrie back on to create angst for Sami and Rafe. The older characters should be shown more. More Hope, for sure, and bring back Bo! Daniel and Jennifer are OK, but they need a better storyline ! Chloe should be on for longer, but put her with Brady instead of using her as Dannifer angst. Have Melanie come back with Nathan as her husband, and they can work at the hospital. Let Kristen leave, her storyline is old and boring. Her and Brady are awful together! John and Marlena need more airtime, but a new story, we already saw them deal with Kritter.
I disagree with you the kristien and brady. Forbidden romance and john and marlana history with her with is awesome, she liven up john , marlana, e.j, and kate . The best story going. You would not know a good story if hit you in backside, just by me viewing your posts.
I do know good stories. Krady have no “romance” factor. All they do is have sex, which gets old. There is no reason for them to be falling in love. Love is more than just sex AKA Love is different than Lust.
Oh and just because it is the best story going doesn’t mean it is a good story.
Them as couple is not good, she is using him and yet falling for him at same time, brady is. A pawn in kristien revenge plot. Dmitri have been watching the soap, you would know kristien using brady to get back john and marlana, yes it is good story krady a bad couple with sexual chemistry. Soap opera digest even gives the story overall a thumbs up.
So glad days is staying on, because the show is really good right now, I. Would bring back max and chelsea, plus recast bo brady, give kayla a story, bring back austin and carrie, and finally give us adventure story.
Also, bring on more WilSon! Let them have their own story, instead of involving them with boring Gabi and homophobe Nick. I would also like if the writers made Nabi more interesting, and changed them into likeable characters.
DAYS/SONY/COMCAST….. if YOU READ this:
PLEASE….align your product…. with the other Serials…. Film/Produce within 6 weeks… to keep all the fires in-sync and burning…. fixing storylines 3-4 months later… doesn’t work.
I bet in four years when they get around to reading your post, they will definitely decide to study your suggestion with a committee to do market research about it, which will take another two years. Then add another year to analyze the research- and my guess will be in the 2020 they be all set to change the filming schedule, when new guys will be put in charge and they will start the process all over again. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?
DOOL if you are going to stick around could you please introduce some characters that represent America’s melting pot. Spice it up a little. There are plenty of interracial families out there who would just love to see themselves portrayed as positive role models. Forget all the hateful and replusive mail that you recieve because those losers don’t really matter and don’t deserve the pleasure of watching TV period.
** I am re pasting this from bottom to make shure you read this idea!!!!!

kristen could be invovle in an accident and caused by JOHN and the fall caused her to lose her memories the last memories could be before her and john were ever togather and she become good again and thats when john could want her back and fight with brady by then him and marlena be over. And she could actually marry Jon this time, even try new technology to hve a child together and do, but somehow she gets into a 2nd accident later on the triggers her to remeber. That can be a hot story line Kristen could so play if off so well. While this is going on sami could be possessed with a demon and causing drama to salem. : ) hawt hawt storylines!!!!! Please write me back if anything!

OK, Listen !!! I’m 26 years old been watching since a child my parents always watched general hospital but me and my bro watched days because my aunt and grandma got us hooked since Marlena’s possession story. I must of been 9 yrs old then and love it ! So, what I’m saying considering I was in a time of my life where I was unhealthy myself I kinda can put a grasp on dramatic situations to make a story kick! I actually was in a rehabilation center my issues were problematic relationships. So, even when i was there and now recently release EXCITED 2 see Kristen Dimera back!!!! : ) So what I am saying she has that TRUE villian mind frame to bring drama to the show. So did Sami but Sami’s character changed. Alison Sweeny needs a new story line all together. I was away for 2years and shes in the same boat can’t choose as a young women watching the same shyt all the time is tiring. real life drama situations move quickly on impluse. Kind of like Kristins character!!! Sami is the total opposite now your ratings can go up if you change samathas character back! maybe Sami can get possessed like Marelena did!! But this time by Satan himself! Makes sense since Eric is a priest now. And I honestly LOVED Samantha with RAFE they were beautiful together the best relationship other then Brandon walker Ive seen her happy with. Either you put Sami with Rafe if not then with Brandon. The show needs Sami with someone Sexy, hot someone to bring romance and chemistry Brandon Matt Cendo the guy who played him was sexy as hell and thats what daytime needs young viewers like sexy guys with chemistry. Honestly lucus is not sexy sorry him and sami have no chemistry and there boring they do well as best friends. Sami was my fav. now isnt my 2nd her story line is sooo boring, please stop its annoying with the back and forth men. I would love to see her in a real relationship. O yeah btw if you could bring Brandon the orginal brandon back please do if not bring back the orginal Austin not the most recent austin –very very bad choice! You need to bring Dustin peck back with sami if not brandon. If none are avaible do not recast bring sami with rafe and make her stay with him. Sami is young but has no real story. And I’m upset that Will is gay! Will needs to relize he’s Bi sexual or somthing and bring back Mia’ wills first GF. She wa a goood actress! O what else for young viewer the girl who played Cassie you could bring her back, Cassie was sexy, so was Chelsea, I loved Chelsea as a bad girl! Also, Abby is gorgous but she was better a bad girl too. Soap operas need more villians now not good guys.
So Ideas: 1)Put Sami with Brandon Walker #1 if not then Austin-dustin Peck! Last Resort Rafe! Nobody else stop with EJ bull crap!
2) use Eric priest story for a Modern Day possession Story with Sami Possessed!
3)Have kristen get back with Jon Black in the end but no tricks john excepts her for her considering shes been more honest lately than marlena. If jon somehow back with kristen shows he fucked up too, ordinary people aren’t perfect themselves! It be nice to see jon still loved her all these years regardless and kept it hidden.
4) Put Nicole Back with either EJ or Eric.
5)Roman needs a story line I loved him with kate! This can make it so easy for Sami to be evil again and break them up like the good old days.
6) Bring Thersa Back (aka passions therasa who played Arianna)
But this time make her a villian she did good at that on Passions aka the young people soap opera, she was the star of it, she didnt get the right role last time I was so dissappointed it like watching sami now dissappointed. recast her as a new character maybe also a new love interest not brady but a new hot young guy and say like cassie or chelsea who dateing him.
7) days could use a new hang out place like club scene type, that coffee house is boring, maybe a lounge very night scene.
THIS IS ALOT TO WRITE SO I HOPE YOU READ ALL OF THIS!
***** i HAVE AN IDEA: bring someone younge pretty to be like an aspring pop singer, recording her album to the show, like a Rihanna type or Britney type. She can do like a days soundtrack, sing at the lounge, music that people like now. Like “Star” did on One life to live before.
Another Idea kristen could be invovle in an accident and caused by JOHN and the fall caused her to lose her memories the last memories could be before her and john were ever togather and she become good again and thats when john could want her back and fight with brady by then him and marlena be over. DOOLs’ NEW YEARS EPISODE WAS JAM PACKED!
Rafe/Sammi/EJ – Nicole
IMO… Sammi looks more in LOVE w/RAFE. That New Years Eve Kiss was ooh la la… and like they were meant to be together… Sammi seems more assured and like a Woman w/Rafe.
That Kiss that Nicole “stole” with EJ… was SEX… A man w/Power like EJ… was smoking…
—————————–
Sonny and Will…. was so Touching. When Sonny shared with Will.. last years wish list that Will falls in love with him…. WAS ROMANCE.
—————————–
Kristen/Marlena/John/Brady
That fight between father/son, over Kristen, with Marlena rushing at the two of them, really threw me… I did not expect that… the ramifications and story fallout is GOOD…. I did laugh out loud when Kristen happened upon the scene in salem square and she wet herself…
with good writing… this 4-some could be quite good…. they need to show John, manning up every now and then… and not be so stuffy… Marlena’s ball and chain… curbing his libido… C’mon John.
———————————
Nick/Gabbi/Will
Will telling Nick – I won’t let my child be raised by a bigot…. and telling Nick “i’m not your gay boy”….
Nick telling Will – you gave Gabi and I this baby… etc….
Nick Fallons’ acting is on par believeable (surprising me)… even i don’t know what to expect… ie: his job interview with Kate was power play toying…
Homophobia is wrong on so many levels… but it happens… and it’s a storyline that needs be brought to light….
—————————-
Kristen and Marlenas bantering…. Kristen telling Marlena she wants and or wishes her dead…. within or by the end of the year… and that she may be her Mother in law….? LOL.

Cheers! NBC/Sony/Comcast.
You knows what ironic we complain about these soaps and refuse to watch them because some of stories are not of our liken, but we get pissed when hear our soap opera is gonna be cancel and give the networks grief. We stop watching the show and we still get mad. We just as fickle as people on the shows we watch.
