The New York Times Goes ‘Beyond the Gates’ Spotlighting Groundbreaking New Daytime Drama
CBS’ new daytime drama, Beyond the Gates is making quite the splash even before it airs its first episode. The drama debuts on Monday, February 24th at 2PM ET/1PM CT and will stream on Paramount+
Now, the New York Times has talked to its main participants in front of the camera and behind the scenes during its recent trip to Assembly Atlanta, the studio where the new show is filmed unlike its Los Angeles counterparts: Days of our Lives, General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless.
When it bows, Beyond the Gates is centered around a wealthy Black family featuring a predominantly Black cast, and with a majority of Black department heads behind the the scenes. Below are some of the most notable quotes from the cast and creatives who are bringing the series to life!

Tamara Tunie, who plays matriarch Anita Dupree, who herself has a long soap pedigree from her time on As the World Turns, shared: “There is an audience out there that for decades had not been represented or catered to, to say, ‘This is for you.'” She added, “The Black audience has been very loyal to daytime drama for decades and decades and decades. The Black dollars are very strong and waiting to be spent. I think that this show is being provided for that constituency.”
“The weight of what we’re bringing to the table for audiences and what it means is giant,” shared Daphnee Duplaix (ex-One Life to Live and Passions), who plays Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson.

Karla Mosley, who has been a longtime soap opera fan favorite from her previous roles on Guiding Light and The Bold and the Beautiful, and who plays Dani Dupree on Beyond the Gates. spoke to how reality TV’s version of the soaps, such as the Bravo franchise “Real Housewives,” took over the modern-day version of the genre, but that there is nothing like the real thing. Mosley shared, “If you’re going to go see something staged, why not see people who can really deliver in a way that’s skillful and that pulls on your heartstrings in an intentional way, but also allows for fun and warmth?”
President and Chief Executive Officer of the CBS Entertainment Group, George Cheeks, who had been thinking about the potential for a new daytime soap for awhile added, “I really do believe that the genre may not look the way it looked before — in terms of every network has three soap operas, every single day — but there’s still an audience for it.”

Michele Val Jean, the creator of Beyond the Gates, and who is one of the main executive producers and the co-head writer, shared her vision and why it’s a game-changer: “I wanted to see a big Black family that’s rooted in their love for each other, and they’re accomplished and they’re smart and they’re rich and they’re not downtrodden.”
However, all of this would not have happened without the dedication of Sheila Ducksworth, president of the CBS Studios/NAACP venture partnership and co-EP of Beyond the Gates, who never gave up on her wish to see a soap of this importance. Ducksworth proudly expressed, “This is really almost a 30-year passion, (to) the point of getting this made.”
So, do you predict ‘Beyond the Gates’ will become one of the top-rated soap opera when it gets off the ground? What did you think about the statements made by the main cast and creatives in the NYT article? Comment below.
I wonder if Victoria Rowell might pop up since she strongly voiced how Black people aren’t featured prominently on daytime years ago.
I wish it wasn’t on at the same time as GH. I want to watch them both. Hopefully it will be on u tube as well!
Watch one. DVR the other.
Waiting to see it but hate it come on the same time as General hospital
DVR , WATCH ONE , & RECORD ONE.
While I’m glad the show will be dominated black actors; will there still be a diverse ensemble? I’m looking forward to a new soap and hope this will be a start to more new soaps popping up on daytime tv.

‘Beyond the Gates’ Mike Manning Talks Smitty’s Emotional Visit with His Mother (Exclusive)

This week on all-new episodes of Beyond the Gates, as Smitty (Mike Manning) continues to be framed and in hot water for the murder of Dr. Lia Whitmore, he gets some familial back-up when his never-before-seen mother, Jenny Smith arrives in Fairmont Crest to see her son.
Jenny is played by Jennifer Van Horn who made her Beyond the Gates debut on the Wednesday, October 21, which was the same day that Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Daytime Drama Series Emmy nominee, Mike Manning participated in a livestream chat on You Tube’s Michael Fairman Channel.
In story, as Smitty was at home, he received a surprise visit from his mother, who resides in Ohio. Jenny came to support her son through this difficult time. Smitty made note of his disappointment that his father didn’t come with her on the trip, sharing that he knows his dad has never been comfortable around wealth or the Duprees. Smitty also acknowledged how his father didn’t approve of becoming a journalist or moving to the DMV. Later, when Smitty’s husband, Martin returned (Brandon Claybon) he walked in on Smitty getting a pep talk from Jenny.

SMITTY’S MOM ARRIVES
Manning addressed how he had to keep the appearance of Smitty’s mom on the down low. “I do have a mom now. Yes.! I couldn’t talk about it to anybody. Jennifer Van Horn who plays my mom was so lovely and so nice, and she was great. I love Smitty having some backstory and having a parent.”
And there could be even more Smitty drama to come! Mike shared, “They mentioned Smitty’s father too, so they kind of plant the seeds for maybe more to come, which is nice. I think it really shows that there’s just one more level to the community that is surrounding Smitty. One of my favorite scenes from this entire storyline is when Smitty gets hauled into jail and the entire Dupree family shows up and they all start taking shots at Jacob (Jibre Hordges) and everyone at the police station.”
BEING EMBRACED BY THE DUPREES
Manning, in particular, recalled a moment from fellow Daytime Emmy nominee, Tamara Tunie (Anita Dupree). “I loved when Anita goes, and this is not verbatim, but it was something along the lines of, ‘If Smitty’s not home for dinner, you’re gonna be hearing from Anita Dupree.’ Then, Vernon (Clifton Davis) says something, and Kat (Colby Nixon) comes in and she’s giving him so much sass. I remember watching the episode just being so touched that the entire Dupree family is wrapping around Smitty like this shield, this cocoon. So, it makes this storyline of him being framed a little bit easier to swallow.”

MORE OF SMITTY’S BACKSTORY TO BE REVEALED?
Speaking of the scenes between Smitty and his mom, Manning felt, “It was very touching. He spoke about how he loved his mom for what she sacrificed, It was one of those mother-son things, but it was poignantly done. I would like them to explore that more, and Smitty’s family, because, I think that it’ll also help inform some of the dynamic between Martin and Smitty. We know that Martin comes from a long line of successful people, whether it’s in entertainment or politicians. His grandfather’s a senator. So, we understand that he grew up in the country club, basically. We don’t really understand where Smitty grew up yet.”
The two-time Daytime Emmy winner also explained that he has his own origin story for Bradley “Smitty” Smith: “Obviously, I have an idea in my head with the backstory that I’ve sort of decided for Smitty, whether or not that’s exactly what the writers are going to throw at me, eventually, who knows? But, I certainly have an idea of why Smitty is the way he is, why he’s so driven, why he takes risks, why he’s so hungry to prove himself and be successful in journalism and everything else.”
You can check out a scene between Smitty and his never-before-seen-mom, Jenny below. Followed by our live chat with Mike Manning after the episode aired.
Now let us know, do you hope Beyond the Gates explores more of Smitty’s backstory? Did you enjoy the debut of Jennifer Van Horn as Smitty’s mom? Share your thoughts via the conversation below. THE 411 ON TIA AND KALISTA
Speaking with TV Insider, about their soapy experience in Fairmont Crest, Tabitha Brown previewed about her host with the most, “Tia is very professional, but she’s a girl’s girl. She is a protector of women and wants to tell their stories in a beautiful way, but she also wants to make sure they’re seen in a very good light.”
However, Burruss previews that Kalista arrives with a score to settle. “She’s spicy,” shared the recording artist. “I always love playing somebody that has come to start trouble. It’s always fun to play a villain of sorts, but Kalista feels like she’s been done wrong and she’s hurt by what she feels has been done to her. So Kalista is stirring up trouble, but she feels justified putting Dani on blast. Kalista is ready for some payback.”
Beyond the Gates is produced by CBS Studios, as part of the CBS Studios/NAACP Venture, in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble. Created by head writer Michele Val Jean, executive producers include Val Jean, Sheila Ducksworth, Julie Carruthers, Tracey Thomson, Leon W. Russell, Derrick Johnson, Anna Saalfeld and Lela Coffey.
Beyond the Gates is broadcast weekdays on CBS (2:00-3:00 PM, ET/1:00-2:00 PM, PT) and is available to stream on Paramount+**.
