‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.
Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.
As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY
Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.
Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS
Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.
In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Courtesy/ABC
Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”
So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.

Did anyone notice that when Robin was talking to Carly on the show, when she called Carly by her real name instead of Carly,Carly busted out laughing.
Carly laughs?
I liked it, Xai. That was the cutest faux pas. Lol.
I just hope that Y&R will (wisely) SORAS (when the time is right) little Katie and cast Brooklyn in the role.
WOW what a way to reunite Jason and Brooklyn! That would be great!
A well-known soap journalist has already posted an article urging JFP to do this! That would be a coup for Y&R, and a real blow to GH.
I think a Delia Miracle recast!
I am honored to be a scrubbie. Long LOVE Robin & Patrick. Bravo KMc and JT.
Simply beautiful. So much love in one photo.
Second the emotion–lol!
I just watched the episode I thought it was well done with the time constraints that they had the flashbacks were a nice touch.
The flashbacks were terrific!
The flashbacks were the best part of it. Also loved the vows to Emma. Otherwise it was so brief and oddly edited with weird jumps to the Laura/Tracy/Nik/Hayden scenes. Robin had hardly any face time with Mac and Robert. Why? Poor Felicia got to say nothing. Why did they make Maxie “forget” the minister and the rings? That’s not like Maxie, the Super Wedding Planner. They could have simply said that she planned, with Mac, for Mac to get ordained online. That would have been a nice touch. Also, feel like Epiphany should gave been a wedding guest. She’s been a big part of Drake Jr’s life!
Loved the flashbacks–wistful–to think we saw none of another legacy couple–throwing some shade at Tony Geary’s “misconduct.”
great picture. I will miss them
I am looking forward to Jason’s role as Billy Abbott on Y&R.
Where is Robert Scorpio?
I guess Robert must have taken the picture. Love the picture…yes, BRAVI and KUDOS but, shouldn’t have Tristan been included in the Scorpio-Drake family picture?
He barely said goodbye to Robin. Odd.
He gave her away. Mac officiated.
I mean, in the picture? Shouldn’t Robert, the father, have been included in the picture?
Jason Thompson’s scene partners were primarily Kimberly, Brooklyn, and Finola (not including “non-family” members like Liz or Sam). He barely had any scenes with Tristan Rogers over the years, esp. since Tristan has barely been on the show over the years, sadly for us Robert Scorpio fans.
Well, Jake R. With all due respect, the ‘heading’ specifies, “Jason Thompson posts Scorpio-Drake family photo”. FAMILY photo. Robert Scorpio is, indeed, the Scorpio patriarch . Without him there would not have been Robin Scorpio. It makes no difference how long or how often Tristan has had contact with Jason. We are talking about the characters, not personal friendships. If it was not Jason’s intention to include Tristan, as Robert, then the wording should not have included ‘Scorpio-Drake family’, either. I am strictly talking about that….difference of opinion, I guess. Have a good day.
My sentiments exactly. Why no Robert in the pic.
Despite the title of the photo, the comment seems to reflect the professional relationships of the actors – and Robert just wasn’t in that sphere as often, unfortunately. I don’t think it was meant to slight him; just an actor’s photo of those closest on the set in his storylines & keeping it “all in the family.” Makes sense to me 🙂
Bittersweet….
It was a very nice picture.
Going to miss seeing you all on my favorite soap.Such a sad last day for me!
What a beautiful send off for Patrick, Robin and Emma Drake. I loved their story line and I will miss them on GH. Wishing them all much success in their future endeavors.
Very sad Patrick, Robin and Emma will be missed. But, at least you can watch Patrick on Young & Restless. My very best to Patrick.
Just started recording Y&R since so many of my favorite soap actors have been cast there. I feel like I know the rudimentary back stories on most of the characters since I read the soap mags. Shouldn’t be too hard to catch up hopefully. Enjoying the show so far, though never liked those show runners when they were at GH.
I certainly hope we will see this family again. At least Kmberly and Brooklyn visiting. It sounds like definitely Brooklyn will visit.
Will truly miss Patrick,Robin, and Emma Drake. They were the ultimate supercouple of GH and were the reason I watched GH since they got together back in 2005. Can’t wait to see JT on Y & R it should be interesting. Hopefully when the timing is right for Robin,Patrick,& Emma to return to GH for a future storyline they could convince Y& R to let JT come back as Patrick even on a recurring basis. That would make the scrubs fans really happy . Wish they could have gotten Rick Springfield to come back for Jason and Kimberly’s final sendoff that would have been awesome. Love the family photo.
Thank your lucky stars Scrub Fans that these characters were not on Days, otherwise instead of a happy family reunion that leaves the door open for a return some day, they would have all died in a plane crash on the way to California —- so grateful for a happy ending for a change– it was cheesy and predictable but at least it ended on positive note — for now anyhow.
Well first, it was amazing to see Robert, Anna, Robin, Patrick, Emma, Mac and Felicia in the same room. It has got to be years since all the Scorpios have gathered at the same time. Now we only get to see Anna and maybe a little of Mac and there they go! Sad but happy to see them all together again. It was also nice to see Carly and Robin hug it out! They have a checkered history with lots of finger pointing but like Robin said today, she loves Sonny and Carly is good for Jason and those two men mean the world to Robin so why not Carly and Robin be friends. Bury the hatchet because they have two things in common! Second thing, on these shoe string budgets its tough to make weddings grand. well, this being in the Drakes household would be nothing spectacular BUT Patrick and Robin exchanged their vows to Emma and I thought that was really cool and different. Too me, another positive notch in the new writers belts. Thank you!
I would also include Maxie in that group.
I did think of her when I was thinking of Mac and Felicia but Maxie doesnt really have a strong connection to Robert and Anna.
Anna is Maxie’s godmother; this is a relationship that should be more often acknowledged.
What I loved was the genuine emotion we saw from all of the actors in the wedding scenes. You can tell that JT, KMc and BS will all be missed, and how much they will miss GH. These are the moments I live for on a soap and they’re very rare. It was a beautiful wedding and the right way to send off the Scorpio-Drakes. Well done, GH, and all the best to the three actors as they leave GH for greener pastures.
I love them too, Beth.
I really hate to see these guys go! I loved the story line of Robin, Patrick, & Emma! I hope they can come back on GH sometime, & do visits. Best of luck to all. Love to all. 🙂 A devoted GH fan.
At least Patrick and Robin, with Emma in tow, got married again for the scrub fans, and the emphasis was all on them. But the rest of the wedding party seemed like window dressing except for a couple of wrap-up conversations between Robin, Carly, Liz, and Jason. I realize it was short notice, but no music, laughter, festivity to speak of…Maxie where were you? Robert barely had a line, looked like he was on a lunch break from Y&R, and only one daddy/daughter hug…sorta…and then folded chairs and pulled a luggage piece outside. Felicia warmed a seat…that was all. Nothing between Anna and Robert…no glances, smiles, hugs, hand-holding for this occasion or each other. Where was Ephiany (sp?) for Young Dr. Drake? And I don’t think inviting Sam would have been such a bad idea since she helped hold the fort down while Robin was gone, and between her and Patrick formed at least a friendship and bond when both realized how they felt about Jason and Robin at about the same time.
this is one of the best episodes i have seen in a very long time – it was so nice to see the scorpio brothers together & also great to finally see felicia – it was so sad to see the drake family walk off the screen for the last time but i am thrilled they got their happy ever after because after all they went thru they totally deserved it…………
i will keep this episode on my dvr
i forgot to say that epiphany should have been included because she loved her some “drake jr” and robin…………………..
The thing I like most about this interview is that young Brooklyn obviously does not have a psycho stage mom like Kris Kardashian! Brooklyn said that she is only allowed to watch Jason’s scenes on Y & R. She also said she doesnt have social media. It is very nice and rewarding to hear of a child being protected and loved rather than profited from and exploited!
Agreed Dylan…. you watch and see… she will be cast in many things, she is so adorable and obviously a major talent.
Thanks, Kimberly–for remember us fans–we love your class. Hope next year is a good one for you. Godspeed and take good care.
I really thought the whole wedding thing was so fast without planning didn’t give it much of a wedding affect. More like a get together. Who ever said Robert was excluded from family photo was totally correct. Robert definitely should have been in that photo. Don’t understand why he was not included. Epaniphy should have been there for Drake Jr. It was nice but so unorganized. Needed much more planning and togetherness. Will miss little Brooklyn such a great little actress. Not much reason to watch anymore. Can’t wait to see how he does as Billy Abbott. Really liked Billy Abbott when it was Billy Miller. This is a big character change for Jason Thompson. I’m sure he will do great but it is so hard to get used to anyone playing Billy Abbott but Billy Miller. Good luck Jason. Just one question though Why would you leave such a good show as General Hospital to go to boring Young and Restless?????
