Mark Rydell, Oscar-Nominated ‘On Golden Pond’ Director, Who Began Career on ‘As the World Turns,’ ‘The Edge of Night,’ Dies at 97

Mark Rydell, one of the most highly-lauded motion picture directors in Hollywood, and who got his start acting on the soaps, has died. He was 97.
The news of his passing came from Bette Midler, who starred in The Rose, which Rydell also directed. Midler took to her Instagram on Friday, August 14 and shared the news.
Bette expressed, “Mark Rydell, the director or my first film, The Rose, died this morning. He was an actor of note before he became a director, and I was so lucky to have met him when I did; he taught me so much on The Rose and later on For The Boys. Two Oscars nominations both because of him. He was the actor’s whisperer; just a few words was all it took to understand what was needed.”

As soap fans know, Rydell got his first big break playing Jeff Baker on As the World Turns. The popular character was involved on-screen with then star of the CBS soap opera, Rosemary Prinz (ex-Penny Hughes). He stayed in the role from 1956-1962. When the producers wanted him to re-up his contract, Rydell decided to leave, and so the writers killed-off the character of Jeff in a car crash. Before ATWT, Rydell played Walt Johnson on The Edge of Night.
MARK RYDELL DIRECTED SOME OF HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST STARS
After a busy career in primetime television roles, Mark began to direct in 1967 with the controversial feature, The Foxes. Because of his acting beginnings, Rydell was known as an actors director. Thus, began an enduring career in Hollywood directing films with some of movies biggest stars at the time including: Steve McQueen in 1969’s The Reivers, John Wayne in 1972’s The Cowboys, and James Caan and Marsha Mason in 1973’s Cinderella Liberty. In 1976, he also directed the pilot episode of the hit ABC domestic drama Family.
It was in 1979, that Rydell directed Bette Midler in her first feature film and lead role in The Rose, in which she was Oscar-nominated, and by 1981, the former soap star was directing the likes of Katherine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Jane Fonda in On Golden Pond, for which he received his only Academy Award nomination as a director. He followed with The River (1984), For the Boys (1991), and many more through the years.
Rydell was previously married from 1962 to 1973 to Joanne Linville who had appeared on Guiding Light, The Goddess, and 1976’s film version of a A Star Is Born. The couple had two children, Amy and Christopher. Later, a second marriage to Esther Rydell produced his son, Alexander, before ending in divorce.
Survivors include Rydell’s three children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Sad to hear of the news of the passing of one of the great directors of our time, Mark Rydell? Do you remember him as Jeff Baker on As the World Turns? Let us know via the comment section.

As first reported by Michael Fairman TV, Scott passed away on Sunday evening, July 13 at the age of 68. His son, Jackson Bryce took to Instagram to make an official announcement of his father’s passing sharing, “What began as stage three esophageal cancer eventually spread and became brain tumors that took his life away from him.”
As the World Turns fans know that Bryce was smash hit in the role of Craig Montgomery, a part he played for several runs on the CBS soap opera from 1982–1991, 1993–1994, and 2007–2008. Along the way, Bryce earned two Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nominations in 1986 and 1987.
Previously, Scott had been diagnosed diagnosed with Stage 3 esophageal and stomach cancer back in October of 2024. He had credited early detection as a vital part of his journey during a conversation on The Locher Room in July of 2025. At that time, Scott had shared he had undergone medical treatment and had since reported being “on the mend.”
Jodi Stevens Bryce’s message for those who want to view Scott’s ‘Celebration of Life” shares, “To our dear family and friends, both near and far, thank you for surrounding our family with so much love, kindness, and prayer. AS THE WORLD TURNS CAST SHARES REMEMBRANCES OF SCOTT BRYCE
Over the last few weeks heartfelt condolences on the loss of Scott have poured including from: Finn Carter (ex-Sierra, ATWT), Martha Byrne (ex-Lily, ATWT), Melanie Smith (ex-Emily, ATWT) and many more.
In fact, Bryne made note to TV Insider following the loss of As the World Turns co-star, of just how memorable Bryce’s work with the late Elizabeth Hubbard’s work as Lucinda was, and their unforgettable pairing; “The energy between them, their dynamic, all the play, fun, and the intensity just jumped through the screen. Most actors wouldn’t go down to set just to watch other performers. They’d stay in their rooms. I would go and just watch them work.”
The livestream will be broadcast courtesy of the The Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Westport, Connecticut.
We all loved Scott Bryce and his powerful performances as Craig on As the World Turns and his body of work in primetime television as well. Now, it’s time to say our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones. Comment below.

Scott Bryce, ‘As the World Turns’ Craig Montgomery, Passes Away at 68

UPDATED: Heartbreaking news to report this Sunday evening, July 13. Two-time Daytime Emmy nominee and beloved soap veteran and television actor Scott Bryce (ex-Craig Montgomery, As the World Turns) has died at the age of 68.
Lucie Arnaz Luckinbill, Bryce’s longtime friend and former co-star announced his death via her Facebook under an hour ago (in a post that has now been deleted, but see below). Arnaz expressed, “a wonderful actor, a beautiful man and a terrific husband and father, Scott Bryce, passed tonight. I am going to miss his eyes, his smile, his wit, his brain, his intelligence, his talent, his bravery, his laugh and his hugs. Dearest Jodi, dear Jackson, he’s watching over you now from a place of pure joy and will always be your guide. But, I hate these goodbyes. Rest in peace you marvelous, magnificent man”.
Previously, Bryce was diagnosed with Stage 3 esophageal and stomach cancer back in October of 2024. He had credited early detection as a vital part of his journey. He had underwent medical treatment and had since reported being “on the mend.”

SCOTT BRYCE’S RUN AS CRAIG MONTGOMERY WAS MEMORABLE
However, Lucie Arnaz shared on her Facebook post in the comment thread section when asked, that Scott’s cancer had returned. She has appeared in two projects with Bryce, the Indie film, The Pack and the TV series, Sons and Daughters.
Jackson Bryce, Scott’s beloved son, shared a beautiful tribute to his father after his passing on his Instagram where he shared that, “What began as stage three esophageal cancer eventually spread and became brain tumors that took his life away from him.”
Scott was the son of actor Ed Bryce, who was best-known for his role on the soaps as Bill Bauer on Guiding Light from 1959 to 1983. On As the World Turns, Scott had a significant run as Craig Montgomery, and at one point was initially paired on-screen with Meg Ryan (ex-Betsy Stewart). Bryce had appeared on the CBS soap opera from 1982–1991, 1993–1994, and 2007–2008.
AS THE WORLD TURNS CO-STAR PAYS TRIBUTE
On As the Word Turns, Scott’s on-screen romance was with Finn Carter, who played Sierra Esteban was a fan favorite for longtime viewers.
Carter expressed her grief on Instagram following the news of Bryce’s passing sharing, “My sadness knows no bounds. My gratitude for Scott knows even fewer. Scott was the best husband a woman could ask for. As an actor he was fearless, kind, generous and forever looking for ways to grow. And what a sense of humor! It is so difficult to write this as I can not stop crying . Scott , you were a gift that I did not deserve and one the world was freely given . All of my love to you – ah, just can’t stop crying. See you soon ( not too soon) and look forward to recalling our days on As The World Turns . You patiently taught me so much . XO”
It was during his initial run that Scott received two Daytime Emmy nominations for his performances as the manipulative Craig Montgomery. Bryce was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in both 1986 and 1987.
Bryce exited ATWT in February of 2008 and by December of that year, Jon Lindstrom, (Beyond the Gates, General Hospital) was brought in as the final Craig from 2008-2010 as the soap went off the air. Over the years, Hunt Block and Jeffrey Meek also played the role of Craig.
FROM OAKDALE TO PRIMETIME
In addition, Scott appeared in numerous episodic comedy and drama series throughout his career with roles in: Murphy Brown, The Facts of Life, ER, Law & Order, Reba and Sex and the City and Blue Bloods, The Blacklist, Homeland, 30 Rock to name but a few. On the soaps, Bryce also appeared on One Life to Live in the role of a psychiatrist, Dr. Ed Crosby, from 2006-2007.
Scott is survived by his wife Jodi Stevens and their son, Jackson.
Michael Fairman TV will bring you further updates on this developing story.
Share your remembrances and condolences for Scott Bryce via the comment section below. But first check out these scenes featuring Scott in moments from As the World Turns with Cady McClain and Marie Wilson.

TERRIBLE NEWS, WHY NOT BRING BACK CHARACTERS WE KNOW AND LOVE.!
Why is this terrible news?
Thank you Daisy! I totally agree. Are the OLTL execs that loyal to their old show like GH headwriters. gheesh. This is annoying when new execs take over. I thought PP wanted to reinstate the jobs (most) from abc canceling. They all need to figure out which show they’re gonna air. It seems like it is a brand new show. They should have made it that way then skipped titling it oltl.
Guys, these actors lost their jobs, too when their soaps were cancelled. They have all been out of work even longer! I’m sure that if PP and TOLN were able to strike deals with the actors who were on the ABC OLTL then they would have. Maybe some have moved on or aren’t available right now? Guiding Light is my all-time favorite soap and I’m SOOO happy I get to see Ron Raines again. He’s a phenomenal actor as is Paolo Seganti. Let’s give these guys a chance. 🙂
I only started to watch because no amc episode on tues and thurs. I look at it this way stop complaining and enjoy the opportunity to watch our soaps period
Yay for Paolo and Ron but why Marnie? I never cared for her on ATWT and if they really wanted to get someone from ATWT my first pick would have been the fabulous Julie Pinson!
I love Julie Pinson!
I think we need to write in to get Julie Pinson on the show! She would have been good as that Jane character on AMC too (if they ever give her anything to do besides poor coffee). You would think they could come up with better names for these ladies too Jane and now Jo on OLTL.
I dont care too much for Shelter but id love to see Julie play the bartendar instead of that cant act reality star Jcow!
I’m assuming that Paolo’s character could be paired with Tea or Blair if Todd and Victor are both off the show.
I like Paolo Seganti a lot and I’m glad to have him on OLTL, but Victor is coming back so he can be paired with Blair.
Is Victor coming back? I hope he is but we don’t get any of that information. We still don’t know if Roger Howarth will be doing both shows for sure. It’s like it’s a big secret.
I read a interview saying TSJ is returning as Victor down the road. Also Todd is not leaving OLTL, he just has iun his 2 contracts he cannot be on screen on days he films for the other role and show
I think Roger can be on both shows now, since he is not playing Todd on GH. What is he supposed to do on his 5 weeks off when OLTL isn’t filming?
Trevor St. John will not be coming back as Victor, Jr. or anybody else for that matter.
Love Ron, but I agree where is Jessica & Gigi & Rex
Haven’t heard anything about the actress who played Jessica, but the actors who played Rex and Gigi have turned it down.
I thought Farrah Fath tweeted P&P never contacted her about reprising her role on OLTL…..?
I read that both she was asked through twitter if she was coming back and she gave a flat no for an answer, and JP said on this page that he would not be showing back up in Llanview either. I googled it to double check…
God no gigi please….roxie , tina, jessica, yes
i agree no gigi!!!
jess roxie n rex r needed!
NO GIGI – ever. Rex only if he’s now a widower and Gigi was cremated. Twice.
Im not a big Gigi fan but id prefer her over that awful reality star JW that they use as a bartendar at shelter.
I like GiGi ,Rex, Roxie ,Jessica……I have alway’s like GiGi. It has to be the full
Package.. It can’t be Rex without GiGi & they have their son! They left together rememeber..
Agreed.
Love the new talent! And of a certain age for everyone who whinged on about all the youngsters.
Of them all, I’m excited to see Ron Raines back on my screen. He’s been so successful on the Great White Way, but nice to see him returning to his roots in anytime (aka the new daytime).
I admit I see people’s points about wanting more of their favourites back, but these additions doesn’t mean we won’t get them. We’ll always want more than we have, so for the time being, just enjoy the show.
I would love to see them pair Ron up with either Vicki or Dorian, then David, like his portrayer can come out that he is gay!!!! lol
Could Rons character come between Viki and Clint or be a new love interest for Dorian or maybe Blair…could Poalos character be connected to T’homas who was an artist when we first seen him? Or secretly connected to the people who held Victor? just curious but show needs to bring back a few more of its own familiar faces and Carlottas diner…it was one of my favorite sets and reminds me of those roadside diners i like to eat in. The mall they show looks like a bunch of sheds thrown together!
I’m already tired of the Todd’s storyline. But I agree with you about the mall and bringing Carlotta’s diner back. I don’t really like the airport looking cafe
I dont like that cafe myself…Carlottas Diner looked more realistic and homey…a place id like to meet my friends for lunch and a chat.
Stupid. OLTL has to many new people and not enough of the old people I CARED ABOUT!!! David Vickers and the reality crap bores me it’s so dumb!!! Rama and whoever REALLY?? Very bored of the OLTL REBOOT!!!
Rod, I agree. They have made David Vickers silly and just ridiculous. I now FF past his scenes as well as past scenes in Shelter (and JWow) and the Matthew, Dani, Reporter crap. Pretty much all I find interesting is Dorian, Viki, Clint and the “tattoo mystery” with Victor.
Makes me wonder if anyone from the show even monitor this stuff as a gauge of what’s clicking with the audience and what isn’t?
OMG I so FF most of the little time we get!!! Dorian is boring me too but seems that story might be getting better. Only care about Viki & that’s boring too. Love Todd which that character has been destroyed now by PP & ABC and Tea & Victor. Love Dani but not so much anymore. They don’t care about soap fans as far as what we feel about story LOL
Wow, I thought it was just me. I have been embarrassed to express my real feelings about OLTL because I lost sleep, whined, cried, mourned so much over losing the show. Now that it’s back something is just missing for me & I can’t love it anymore. I understand that everyone could not/would not come back but I just don’t like the new kids & the club scene or David & even Dorian gets on my nerves. I wish they could have literally picked up from the last episode (when Destiny had the baby, among many other great things) & kept going forward from THAT day-forget the months off air. My other problem is I got hooked on Days while OLTL was gone-now I watch Days, Y&R, GH & B&B plus I work so it is hard to keep up with what I watch now much less adding anything else. OLTL would have to be what it was before I would give up any shows I watch now.
There is a lot of us like you out there Gloria…hope the new writers make changes for the better…ill give them time…i was so happy by the return…hate to loose it again…but if i dont see some improvement soon im done with the show for good. PP was too desperate to attract new fans that they completely forgotten its already fan base and why we used to love the show. With that useless Shelter and adding reality star Jcow they seemed to want Jersy Shore and not OLTL!
Thanks jimh. I was reluctant to post my feelings because I was so desperate to get OLTL back-then to get it back & not love it like before has been hard. The thing I love about this site (one of so many things I love) is that you always have a “friend” or two who agrees with you & you don’t feel so bad! Thanks again.
I love all of these actors, but shouldn’t the “show” focus on bringing back actual OLTL characters?
This is great news about Ron Raines! I was afraid we GL fans would never see him again.
Glad he’s connected with Jeffrey too. 🙂
Ron Raines is one of the most talented actors ever to play on a soap. I am so glad he is coming to OL. I hope Robert Newman is next and Kim Zimmer was delightful as Echo. I would also love to see Ilene Kristen return.
I’m all for it. They may pull in As the World Turns and Guiding Light fans that may not be watching as of now. More viewers equals a better chance of getting 4+ episodes back and maybe a TV deal down the line and I’m all for that.
Also with them coming hopefully that alleviates the complaints about there being too many younger stars.
Ron Raines, ex-Guiding LIGHT…
I loved you… I love you….
could this be… the love interest for Dorian? heck… even… mix it up for Vicki.
i will always salute GL.
such a debonair, sexy Man it up.
It’s great to see these three actors are coming back. There are many ex-daytime players out there to reprise roles and play new characters!
They’re unnecessary. Let’s use the people we have before adding more…
What is the problem? These actors are available, the old ones either are not available or simply did not want to return…………
Please NOT Julie Pinson. She was horrible on ATWT. All she did was act with her boobs.
They need new characters on OLTL. Not many actors came back. They either need to add new characters or recast some old one. I was Roxy came back.
I loved Marnie’s Alison MUCH better than Jessica Dunphy, whose delivery always seemed off somehow. And Ron Raines is definitely a feather in any cast’s cap! So nice to see East Coast-based actors get work again.
The whole David Vickers reality show thing is ridiculous and a waste of air time. David’s character, originally conceived as some sort of grifter a long time ago, has been reduced to a clueless boob and the jokes have long worn thin. I love Tuc, but either give him stuff that gives him something interesting to do or write him off the show.
Yep. I don’t get why we are watching his reality tv show. It’s absurd and it’s a drama not sitcom
Love hearing about Paolo Seganti and Ron Raines. The show is lacking in viable male characters . I hope Ron Raines’ character has been cast as a love interest for Dorian. It is about time for Dorian to have a man in her life.
Why can’t they bring back ATWT like they did with AMC and OLTL. The only thing that should never happen If ATWT ever comes back on screen, is that, CG and JP should never be associated with it. ATWT may sink within 6-months of re-airing. And, I hope CG and JP never, never think of venturing into gay or lesbian SLs for any soap or show. After witnessing the horror in which they botched up completely, Luke-Reid-Noah on ATWT; it would be terrible to watch another gay/lesbian SL destroyed by them.
