Peter Reckell Addresses Rumors: He Is NOT Returning to DAYS, and NOT Going to GH!

Courtesy/NBC

Courtesy/NBC

Daytime icon and favorite Peter Reckell, who is so beloved as Bo Brady on Days of our Lives, is sorely missed by viewers and the industry since he departed the NBC soap some time ago.

Today, Reckell took to his Twitter account after being  his loyal fans and followers wanted to know what is going on with all the rumors they were hearing, about a possible return to Salem, or if he is heading to ABC’s General Hospital!  Reckell tweeted about a return to DAYS:  “Ken (Corday) and I talked ,and as before we could not come to in agreement.”

Reckell tweeted in regards to being considered for a role on General Hospital, or another role on a daytime soap: “As for the rumors about other soaps, including DOOL, over the last year, those were started by people who thought they could benefit from them. The doors that are opening for me are not in daytime TV. Thanks as always for your generous love and support. 🙂 🙂 :-)”

So are you disappointed that DAYS and Reckell could not come to an agreement to have Bo back on the canvas?  Are you disappointed that Peter is not going to GH in a new or recast role?  What should DAYS do now? Recast Bo Brady? Try to work out a deal with Peter, no matter what?  Share your thoughts!

GH already has to many people in their cast so no lost there.

I was hoping for him to be recast as John McBain on OLTL since it doesn’t look like Michael Easton will grace the canvas! Good Luck to Peter Reckell in whatever he does!

Work out a deal now to have him return to Days . We miss him so much. I know whatever Peter is asking is not that outrageous.

I totally agree! Bo is missed! Hope and Ciara need to have Bo back! Come on, Corday! Get Peter back! We need a fair and unbiased cop in Salem!

Bo Brady is the heart and soul of Days. He must be allowed to return on his terms. Period!

danny

I am extremely disappointed that Corday can only promise story lines to one actor and for one character–Daniel. Forget what the fans want. More new characters coming and no room for Bo. It sucks.

I agree. They need Bo back!

DAYS has a whole lot that could be cut…Will, Sonny, and the whole gay ensemble for starters. But beyond that…there is a lot of dead weight. Rafe and Gabi come to mind. They just played one of the most absurd episodes ever…a cop funeral with 3 people in attendance, and this cop was a hired killer who we didn‘t know or care about. And they can‘t find room in the budget or on the canvas for Bo? It is a slap in the face to long time viewers, and to Reckell. Like others have said, we don‘t know where the talks are breaking down, but we are certain his demands are not unfathomable and outrageous. The days of soap stars making diva demands have long been a thing of the past, and they all know it. That said….I really dont think Bo should be recast. Kelker kelly could never do it now, and I dont see any other actor doing it either, as it would have to be a pretty beloved, big name actor to pull it off. And if they had the money for a big name star, why not just go with Bo…Peter Reckell??

legit. and it’s true.

this is directed for all… and I happily retort…

“…Will, Sonny, and the whole gay ensemble for starters.”

honestly… we’re talking two characters… and we’ll see how DAYS deals their production sans Chandler Massey.

JEM,

I agree with you about the whole homosexual part of the show. We mute that part and talk among ourselves when that stuff comes up. It feels cheesy and forced anyway. It seems so many shows are on some kind of indoctrination kick for radical social causes. Bo is a good and inspiring character.

Yvonne
Yvonne

Days can not get rid of the Will Nd Sonny characters. But the writers do need to masculine up Sonny more. When he came into the show he was a world traveler and adventurer, now he’s all wimpy. If you are to keep the characters stick with the characters initial characteristics.

I think it is terriblle they wont work with Peter He is one of the actors that has made this show.
Days will go down when they start not appreciating there good actors

I really think Days should reconsider having Peter stay on as Bo, we already are upset with the fact Alison Sweeney has left as Sami. PLEASE PLEASE GIVE HIM THE MONEY HE WANTS, HE IS WORTH IT.

I agree. It’s not fair for K. Alfonso. She needs a storyline.

I agree—it’s not fair to Alfonso—it’s really limiting her story line. They should either kill him off or recast.

Can not replace Peter!! That is his part and no one elses. They replaced him once before it it was just not the same as it was when they tried to replace Kristen!! If he is asking an unreasonable amount then oh well!

He should be back on DOOL, but I was looking forward to seeing him on GH too.

Why not Robert Kelker Kelly who replaced him the first time he left. I think he did a great job. We need a Bo back!

Some stars demand too much money and producers have to make smart
decisions. Pay big money for one person or the same amount of money
for several actors and there is no change in the ratings. I agree with
Ken Corday. You have to protect the bottom line.

And yes, I miss Peter Reckell as Bo.

Does anybody recall the last time Wayne Northrop, Patsy Pease,
Mary Beth Evans and Peter Reckell were togather as the Brady
siblings? Were they ever?

JEM
JEM

Wayne Northrop left in 1984, and returned in 1991. If they ever were together as the siblings, it would have been briefly in 1991, because that was right around the time when Mary Beth left after the disastrous attempt was made to pair her with Shane. Peter and Patsy also left circa 1992, after Kim‘s multiple personality story and when Robert Kelker Kelly Replaced Peter. Of course, since 1997, Roman has been played by Chris Kositchek, whoops, I mean Josh Taylor. Kim has shown up periodically and Kayla presumably still lives and works in Salem. Same as Bo. Thats an interesting question…I‘m not quite sure how to even punch that into YouTube. Lol.

Susan M.

I can remember when they were all on DOOL at the same time. That was when the show was really good and not about who is sleeping with who. I really enjoyed the days when there was an actual story going on. Now it just seems that it the same thing over and over with different couples, sex, sex and more sex. Get back to the good stories. A little mystery that actually gets solved before it gets monotonous. I can miss a week and still know what is happening. AND I say bring Peter Reckell back. He is one of the good characters and the only person that can do it justice. DO NOT KILL HIM OFF, it won’t be the same.

Time to recast or kill off the character but only if there is no more chance he and Corday cant work things out. An important legacy character like Bo shouldve never been off the canvas.

MBmomof3
MBmomof3

I really like Peter Reckell, but GH’s cast is really over-sized already. I miss him as Bo, but wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

DOOL really needs a love interest for Hope (or some storyline). I would like to see her with Lucas. Any reason Hope and Lucas couldn’t work? Are they somehow related? I’ve watched for a long time, but I’m not a super-fan with all the history like some posters on here. I would just like to see more Hope and more Lucas. But DOOL has been sooooo good lately. Love it!

Jake

They are cousins…plus I do not see the chemistry

JEM

Hope and Lucas????? If you need a daily dose of incest, check out GH or B and B. LOL. Hope and Lucas are cousins and even if they weren‘t, the age gap is jarring.

That’s why I asked if the characters are related. thought I was clear on that.

Recast, Recast, Recast— this madness of Bo “being out of town” has gone on long enough. I love PR as much as the next guy– but honestly they have recast Bo successfully in the past– no reason they couldn’t do it again. If they don’t recast soon– then yes, kill Bo off– we all know in soap land death is only as permanent as hair dye– it can always be undone– but limbo land is getting annoying and the character deserves better to languish in no man land while the tptb get their act together.

MBmomof3

As much as I hate to admit it, I don’t miss him. I wish Hope hope more of a storyline. I think the show is doing fine without him. I would rather see the next generation of “DOOL,” especially if the show casts some brothers and sisters for Sonny and Teresa.

Eve and franky could be grandparents without SORAS. It has been that long.

JEM
JEM

No doubt. Eve is pushing 50. They were teenagers along with Jennifer. Jennifer graduated in 1987, so in real time, that makes her 44 on the show. Eve was a gross character. She was a hooker, and scarred up, and sleeping with a greasy pimp. Yuck!!

SZima

I’m with you…don’t miss Bo either. But they should kill the character off so Hope isn’t talking on the phone to NOBODY forever. It’s beyond ridiculous!

I think DOOL should kill Bo off. It is clearly a money issue. Peter has a family to support and is entitled to ask for what he feels he’s worth, but these are hard times for soaps and unfortunately the money isn’t what it used to be. I would hope that he would return to DOOL at some point because I can’t imagine it ending without Bo and Hope.

Nina
Nina

They have specified that it is not a money issue. I think that Bo doesn’t agree with the gay story line because that’s when he left when that started. Wish they were done with that. DOOL was doing just fine wtihout that crap!!!!

Christian

Amen to that. Lets be done with thst story line!

Bonnie Misquaddis

I agree that they should get rid of the gay stuff and also Brady doing coke too. The show don’t need stuff like that being advertised one a good soap like DOOL. I would love for Bo to return cause him and Hope make the show. There is not much excitement happening they are losing their true audience that havebeen warching for years now m Bring Peter bsck and get bsck your audience.

Hilary

I think the answer to this and so many other actors whose characters are not only MIA from the canvas but SORELY NEEDED TO DRIVE STORY is to pay them what they’re worth, write good, compelling stories that are character-driven and make sense for their history, and properly characterize them so that we don’t look at them in the SL’s and say, “huh?” That’s the answer. Pay Peter. Pay Stephen. Make room for them on the canvases. Give us the legacy people we’ve grown to care about. That’s what I think.

Larry Welch

Oh well then…no Bo anymore?? I think now is the time for a visit to see how Hope is doing…No?? I’m sure she’d love to see her old ‘Beau’…Patience has its virtues…

would love it if they would bring back Robert Kelker Kelly.loved him as BO.

JEM
JEM

Almost every single character on this show has been presumed dead at one point. There is very little emotional impact when this show tells a death story. But a Bo presumed dead story would work…it would affect the entire canvas…allow every cast member the chance to shine…especially Kristian…I still say she was robbed of an Emmy the year that twisted satanic freak Jim Reilly made the decision to kill off her son. She plays grief exceptionally well…and it would give her a big story…and eventually allow Hope to move on. I cannot see a successful recast at this point, and Peter is not returning, so it is one of very few viable options.

Sandy
Sandy

I do miss Bo and I am sure Hope does too. She just seems to be floating between scenes a little lost. Recasting him seems like a good idea. I wonder what Peter Reckell’s next move will be and where he will end up? I sense the money plus his status were a big issue for him and he is not settling for less. Good luck but I sense a little arrogance here.

Mad/hatter
Mad/hatter

They had a recast one of the best in the industry Robert k Kelly but you shit all over him because once again you let actresses go bat shit on you. So to bad that they do not have a storyline next time accept a great actor who is ten times better looking etc. the only actress who met him even half way was Lisa Rinna. If you are without a storyline oops who cares!!!!

Patrick
Patrick

you know… add… in how wonderful and absolutely beautiful, sensuous, sexy, alluring… captivating… i have plenty of superlatives… to equate Crystal Chapelle.. and equalling splendid… was Lisa Rinna.

two women… who… had it… loved Bo… just as much…. dag!

I loved these women….

so.. if the rumour mills are true… and I can truly see this happening… behind the scenes eschewing…

sorry fans… but… I can at one time see that this happened…. KA is likely to have ruminated her will….

man… honestly… Crystal Chapelle… spoke volumes… she’s a hot staggerinly loaded with talent woman….

she had the same behind the scenes at Guiding Light… she was HOT with Josh… and they had to let her go.. or pair her with someone else… Reva was not having it.

STAR turns happen….

however…the bottom line is what shows should be about.

I do hope that Hope… has a chance with possibly Rafe or Vargas… i thought these were intimated well with.

fan from beginning
fan from beginning

Recasting Bo Brady I feel would notwork. Some characters are owned by the actor and for better or worse, PR owns BB. The chemistry between Bo and Hope has nothing to do with looks- it has to do with the history between KA and PR. I have always loved when they would show history clips of the 2 of them from times passed. Also all 3 actresses that worked with RKK were not happy with him personally. CC even went so far as to say that when she heard PR would reprise his role as Bo years back she stated that she was VERY pleased to hear that. I’d love to see PR back. I never thought that Days could take 2 characters as Jennifer and Daniel and make a “hot” romance so boring. Just goe to show that the true chemistry between Jennifer and Jack was what made her truly shine. I miss the comical side the 2 of them had with each other.

Michael
Michael

Thank goodness Reckell isn’t returning to Days. I used to love Bo/Hope but Reckell’s portrayal had been lacking in recent years. Sorry- buy he was boring. When I read that he couldn’t come to terms with Corday, I detect money issues. His days are done- and it is time to pas the reins over to more interesting and timely talent.

Patrick
Patrick

for storyline purposes… ie: for the sake of Hope.

let Bo have a mid-life crisis… have him jettison accross the u.s…/world… and end up with Carly.

this would be an easy out… for his eventual and has to return…. in.

he has a breakdown from being on the police force… and has a breakdown… something.

he’s still pivotal and the clammoring fans will reason… and await his return.

dmrjmd
dmrjmd

No; I am not disappointed either way. On DOOL, Bo was written as a key stone cop with an ego. No reason for him to have an ego as a cop or a detective. Not sure if he has ever solved a crime. The Salem PCPD are written to be inept.

debbie
debbie

Make him an offer that he can’t refuse. Days needs him back with Hope. We want to see more of both of them. The show would be complete, love John and Marlena! The first stars on Days mean so much to the people who have been watching all our lives, like myself. You have some loyal fans to watch that long!

I think they should recast the role of Bo. As much as he loves Hope and Ciiara he would never stay away this long. If they are not going to recast him, they need to hook Hope up with Rafe,

Jake R.
Jake R.

Where is Bo supposed to be, anyway? I remember he was taking his mother for Alzheimer treatments out of state, which I thought was a novel way to write them both off the show. Then Caroline came back less than a month later without Bo.

Re: Hope-I’m a somewhat new “Days” viewer (since the gay storyline started), but I know a little of the history of the show. In my opinion, I like the chemistry she has with Abe, but I thought for awhile there they were trying to pair Abe with Kayla (I think that’s her name?) after Lexie died and Patch (Steve?) disappeared.

Yep, devastated, but I move on from such things fairly well…. Hope your future is good to you, and as you wish it to be. Hope to see you around, but enjoy your life. Enjoy your family. DOOL’s writers can’t seem to do it well without ya for some reason? 😀

Days has always been it’s own worst enemy. They have some good storylines, but often run them into the ground, and others that have promise get swept under the rug. They could try and get a deal with Robert Kelker Kelly, who played Bo quite well some time back, but I also think they could work out a deal for Peter if they wanted to. I am quite sick of the Teresa/JJ thing already, both of those sorry little twits should be slapped silly. And as for the gay storylines, they are here, we know it, but I am getting a bit tired of having it always shoved in my face. Anyway, there needs to be a serious return to the roots of the show, and that would solve a lot of the mess.

Honestly, when I was young–I did anything possible to stay caught up and not miss a show. Those were the days…super couples, crazy interesting story lines, exotic locations…I pulled up the “I Need a Hero” on youtube when Bo came back in black leather and a motorcycle. I can still remember that in high school! My teen daughters used to watch it with me…but then the story lines tanked, everyone’s kids left, and old characters just disappeared. I miss the old days. Sick of Sami and all her drama–really girl? Get a clue. EJ? You aren’t enough of your dad. Rafe–loved you on Passions, same with the guy who plays Eric (Ethan from Passions…BTW loved him with Theresa, but that show took major risks)? Loved Bo and Hope but their story lines are boring. John and Marlena? Awkward. Jennifer? No Jack. Remember Isabella? Roman? Kim and Shane? ISA? Eve and Franky? Patch and Kayla? Julie and Doug? Those were the DAYS… I don’t even like many of the new characters and some of them are really creepy. Stop trying so hard to appeal to newer fans and keep the old ones. My obsession passes on to my kids and its not much of a passion anymore.

You can’t kill off Bo. That would just dishonor him and his character. Its better that he is off doing the honorable thing. You can’t replace him–that’s like replacing Marlena or Hope. Somethings needs to change…writing? I think yes. Days needs to be resuscitated…or its just DAYS til its done.

Linda

I understand you need controversy to keep things interesting but let that happen among all the new younger characters on the show. I am 47 and have been watching Days beside my grandmother since the age of 10. Women like to live vicariously thru these characters and we need a steady couple like Bo and Hope who can keep that dream alive that “True love does exist” so Days needs to keep that alive. We also really enjoy seeing all the Holiday celebrations with characters and parties where everyone dresses up so please start adding these back into Days for the veteran cast and let the younger ones do what they need to do to attract the younger viewers.

After watching DOOL for 45 years, or more, I felt Hope and Bo were to be the next couple to carry on the Horton legacy that has been in limbo since Alice Horton died. Please Peter and Ken, work things out! Hope and Cierra need Bo back!

ABC and PEOPLE’s ‘The Story of Soaps’: What Was Your Review Of It?

Tuesday’s night airing of ABC and PEOPLE’s two-hour special The Story of Soaps featured many notable daytime and primetime soap stars, past and present, clips from backstage to classic memorable moments, and some participants who were providing commentary on the erosion of the daytime soaps in our culture.  Still others, maintained and realized that everything today is serialized from the news we watch, to some of Netflix’s most binge-watchable series, and of course, the birth of reality-programming.

Throughout the airing of the special, The Story of Soaps was trending on Twitter and social media either at the #2, #3 or #4 spots for the entire duration of the broadcast presentation, and the cancelled and beloved All My Children was also at one point trending.

However, known soap writers, journalists, ardent fans, and actors of the genre, were all on Twitter last night live-tweeting their thoughts as the special went down, and there was definitely mixed reactions and reviews, when all was said and done.

What the special did not shy away from, but tackled, was Luke’s rape of Laura at the campus disco on General Hospital. and how that moment now, as Genie Francis (Laura), so eloquently put, would be considered as ‘date rape’ in our culture.  The series even included a pivotal moment where Laura addresses Luke (Tony Geary) about the rape years later, after helping Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) through her rape ordeal.

John Stamos (Ex-Blackie Parrish, GH) got a bevy of “Right On’s!” for his comment that the soaps do not get the credit that they deserve and clearly came through as one of the soaps greatest supporters, as did former The Doctors and Knots Landing star, Alec Baldwin.

However, throughout the two-hours, Andy Cohen’s commentary was thread throughout; mostly citing soap’s demise and the creation of reality-programming and his “Real Housewives” franchise, that the special touted as the new soap operas.  It continued on the narrative that people preferred to see real-life drama then made-up drama on a fictional soap.  And while, that has been a trend in American culture for decades, the commentary came off as often out of place in a celebration of the soaps; and bringing in a lot of negativity to the special that soap fans were tired of hearing.

In a lighting rod moment, Cohen stated: “I know Susan Lucci doesn’t agree with me, but I think that the Housewives have replaced soap operas because truth is stranger than fiction. Soaps became kind of unnecessary because you could do it with real people, and they’re writing the drama themselves.”

The special did also address the cancellations of All My Children and One Life to Live, (which many were not sure they were going to do – given this special was airing on ABC), where One Life’s leading lady and six-time Daytime Emmy winner, Erika Slezak (Ex-Viki) said what we all wanted to sa ywhen the ax fell on the towns of Llanview and Pine Valley, “People were horrified”.

Clearly, OJ Simpson and his murder trial and reality-programming were also given a chunk of time to show where the once mighty landscape of daytime soaps which once had 13 shows on the air, dwindled town to 4.  But, it would have been nice to see more time spent on how in this day and age, the people in this current landscape of the genre work so hard to get episodes done at an unbelievable pace, and how in that climate the performers still deliver gut-wrenching performances.

Former Loving, OLTL and Breaking Bad star, Bryan Cranston, did point out how the once powerful soaps, just don’t have the dollars they used to, and need to, to help with production costs and their taping schedule.

Viewers were reminded of soaps’ socially relevant storylines including hankie-inducing moments from: Robin (Kimberly McCullough) and Stone’s (Michael Sutton) HIV/AIDS storyline on General Hospital, to Billy Douglas being a gay teen coming out on One Life to Live, played by a young Ryan Phillippe.

There also did not seem time spent on the contributions of William J. Bell; one of the most prominent writers of the soap genre of all-time.

For many commenting on social media last night, there seemed to be a feeling of some glaring omissions of participants who could speak on this genre, who have been in the trenches as soap producers, soap writers, pundits, actors, and more, who were not included in the special.

So, what was your review of The Story of Soaps? How would you grade it? Do you feel it accurately reflected the history of the genre?  Were you happily surprised,  or when it came to the end where you over it, or somewhere in between? Sound off in the comment section below.  Below are some tweets from notables who have worked as an actor, a writer, and a journalist in the soaps.
