The latest ratings are out for the week of January 15-19 and it was Days of our Lives which showed the most gains in total viewers, as many of the DiMera clan threatened to kill Andre (Thaao Penghlis), and then he was actually murdered, thus beginning a new whodunit on DAYS!

Days of our Lives added the most total viewers for the week with + 52,000, and now for the first time in a long time the 52-year-old daytime drama has over 2.5 million weekly viewers up + 238,000 from last year at this time. In addition, DAYS was the only soap to gain viewers in the key womens 18-34 demo.  Since Ron Carlivati took over the head writing gig at DAYS, this week’s ratings mark a total viewer and total household high during his tenure.

The only other soap to gain viewers for the week was The Young and the Restless adding + 30,000 total viewers.  Y&R was down in key demos, but stayed on par in women 18-34.  Its sister soap, The Bold and the Beautiful was down slightly for the week in total viewers, but showed gains in the 18-49 and 25-54 demos.

Finally, General Hospital was the daytime drama which lost the most viewers for the ratings period down -83,000. The ABC soap was also down in all key demos.  To check out the entire ratings picture via SON click here.

Numbers are based on Live+Same Day ratings

(Compared to Last Week/Compared to Last Year)

Total Viewers
1. Y&R 4,840,000 (+30,000/+177,000)
2. B&B 3,912,000 (-23,000/+44,000)
3. GH 2,732,000 (-83,000/-32,000)
4. DAYS 2,531,000 (+52,000/+238,000)

So, which soap is telling the most intriguing stories these days?  Which is not? Which soap do you think deserves to be the top-rated of them all?  Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

If GH is wondering what is wrong with their ratings, they need only look to the fans angry at the dismissal of Genie Francis in the middle of a story that had grabbed our imaginations. Of course, that is if they care about the program at all, and this isn’t part of a network plan to ditch the show.

This ratings period is for the week just before Genie was demoted. The news hit the internet that Friday. Her final air date was Tuesday of the following week.

There’s TV ratings time and real time. I still have the nagging feeling that the network is giving us the old ATWT/GL shuffle.

Exactly …. ABC is run by money hungry power hungry individuals who care less about their viewers. It’s a pattern in prime time as well as daytime. Someone above replaced the behind the scenes folks at GH to finally put their last daytime drama in a coffin … Sounds crazy? Not at all! Evidence and history prove it

AMEN… these idiots still believe the audience is stupid!

True that, Patricia!

Correct, Patricia! I haven’t watched GH since the last day Genie was on–and don’t plan to.
I have viewed GH since the day it began–with Angie and her “burn” story.
No more without Genie. No more ignominy for Genie: no more for me.
Genie has endured so much bad treatment and indignity at the hands of GH. And, I might add, so have the fans. Enough is enough.

Hi Nancy..
You not watching does Not affect the ratings.
If you are not of a Neilsen household you are not counted..

Anyone not watching because of Genie leaving is simply doing absolutely doing nothing that would affect the ratings.

It is the Ratings the network look at, not taking notice of someone not watching because of Genie..
You are not counted, you are an estimate of 0.1 %

But for everyone of us that stops watching because of how they handle the Show is a reflection of others as well…………AND Some of us ARE counted in various ratings systems….as well as Neilsen ratings… History proves that when people are vocal about these things there are others who feel the same way but are not as outspoken… IN the end….the network has decided to end their daytime drama run…. GH will be off the air by 2019

Y&R & B&B is shown on Pop tv in the
Evening. Do these ratings count
Towards their overall ratings?

They don’t account for the over-all ratings they get daily as they’re considered encore runs.

But if they keep meeting the ratings threshold set by Pop TV then that would justify keeping the two shows on its schedule for a very long time.

The initial excitement over Steve’s return has worn off I see…

I’ve only been watching DOOL for a few months and it hooked my from the start. My pet peeve? Steve calling Kayla “baby” after every sentence; with an occasional “sweetness” thrown in for variety. Drives me nuts! Personally, I like the term “baby” but not every sentence; reminds me of the rebooted online version of OLTL when the F word was thrown in every other sentence. Again, not against the word…but did the writers ever hear of overkill?

GH. I’m still loving it; not sure why the ratings have dipped. It may have SOMEthing to do with Genie Francis..but then there are those in the 18-49 demo that dipped too…many who might not have been born let alone watched Laura during her Luke and Laura days etc and have no feelings one way or the other about Genie’s exit… so I doubt they stopped watching because of her contract issues.

And so it goes…

Rebecca 1. I so agree about, Steve and his baby and sweetness, and his all over gushiness over his wife. Also would like to see them do something about his vagrant appearance. Maybe a haircut and shave would help.
As far as GH, I am also still loving it, and who does it really help, to give up something you love? Genie is fine, also loved her on Y&R as Cain’s mom, but are they obligated to keep any actor on, that they feel they can’t use at any given time?

“Sweetness” is their thing….long-time watchers would be put-off and surprised if Steve did not call Kayla any of those endearment, Violet….especially, “sweetness”…. soo used to hearing it…music to my ears.
Go Steve
Go Kayla
Go Sweetness
Go Days!!

You’re so right, CeeCee….I haven’t watched DOOL for decades, but I still recall Steve’s (aka, Patch’s”) nickname for Kayla just as surely as Bo’s reference to Hope as “Fancy Face!” It’s the attention to such little details as those that show deference to a soap’s past and links them to the present…too bad GH doesn’t show the same respect for its longtime characters!

Hi Rebecca1,
Why do you think the 18-49 demo has dipped? Story lines too convoluted, violent, and unbelievable? Too much mob?

I don’t think GH is violent, Nancy. I, like Su, think they talk a lot about it ie Sonny, Valentin, Julian, etc but not much is shown. Yes, we have the occasional shooting and/or murder but it’s not graphic/gory and not anywhere near a primetime crime show which usually garners high ratings. As for being unbelievable…when was GH ever known for being based in reality? Casey the Alien, the Ice Princess, Freezing the World, etc, etc…

Maybe some of the others left when Nathan was killed off or they heard he would be. Don’t know. But, there’ll be an upswing again. GH is holding steady. Not sure if it’s steady enough to last many years but time will tell.

Love Steve and “Sweetness.” Always have, always will.

because you are a new viewer Rebecca1 thats why Steves vocabulary is bothering you
its so natural for longtime viewers because hes always shown this type of affection for her. its why the couples endured so long. they seem like a couple who are completely in love. steve and kayla rule. intime you will feel the same.

Hi damien…

As I said it’s not the affection or the word “baby” that bothers me; it’s his saying it at the end of every sentence to her! LOL:

“I’m starving, baby.” Want a sandwich, baby? Are you hungry, too, baby? I love cold pizza, baby. Want a slice, baby? Does my calling you baby after every sentence bother you, baby?” LOL… Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!

I like the characters and their relationship. I also love both actors; loved them as Stefan and Catherine on GH. But, “baby” after every single sentence just grates on my nerves. As did the “F” word on the online version of OLTL. I have nothing against the word; doesn’t offend me in the least. But it was annoying to hear it thrown in every other sentence. It was like they were trying too hard to be “real” to be “cool.” Again…annoyed me to the point that it detracted from the story:

“This is f’ing cool. Wanna go watch some f’ing TV? Naaah, I think I’m gonna play my f’ing guitar. You should hear my new tunes; they’re f’ing cool.” Sounds f’ing great, man. I’ll f’ing listen to it later.

Ahem. Get my drift, baby? (sorry…I’m on a roll….)

So. To reiterate. It’s not the affection nor the word baby that grates on me, just the use of it with literally every sentence (‘cept for the occasional sweetness substitute. so to speak…)

With that said, if I do, in time, love that he says that to her (over and over and over and over) I’ll be the first to admit it. 😉

Hi everyone. Just jumping in here, for lack of a better place. My comment is not directed to any one person, but let it be duly noted, I have been chastised for my comment about Steve’s ” sweet” little pet names for Kayla. I love all these characters as much as anyone, and have probably watched this show, among others, longer than some of you have been alive. Sometimes, it just gets a little much, and while I’am at it, I will also say that Fancy Face annoyed me too, at times. So, kindly give an old lady a break. I think my all over loyalty, gives me the right to be critical sometimes.

Dear Violet…

You are nothing if not an extremely sweet poster! You don’t have to apologize for anything…if the overuse of the word gets on your nerves as it does mine then it does! (And I think we’re right! 😉 Overkill !!!!!!!

🙂

I think the ratings are a reflection of the lack of variety in the show’s storytelling. If you don’t like Sonny, Carly, Jason, Sam, or Drew there isn’t much for you to watch. Good soap opera storytelling has one story beginning while another story builds and yet another climaxes — the popular thought being that if you don’t like one plot you’re probably invested in one or two of the others. GH just plods along focused on the same five characters who never grow or learn.

DAYS seems to be reaping the rewards of employing varied storytelling and not playing the same 5 characters every day of the week.

I don’t necessarily think there’s too much mob or Jason; it’s the Carly hour I can’t take. She (I think more than Sonny) is in almost everything and I just can’t stand her. From her horrific treatment of AJ to Robin, Elizabeth, Sam, Franco, the list goes on and on (though they’ve had her come around to the three females who she felt took “her” Jason from her…to the fact she stole Michael, has in a sense stolen Ava’s baby and acts like Avery’s mother…ugh…her character alone is just reprehensible to me. When she furnished Jason’s apt I cringed. Loved it’ but hated that she, once again, was instrumental.

But my point is we have Ned and Olivia, Michael and Nell, Franco and Liz, Kevin, now Anna/Finn, Ava/Griffin, Anna/Valentin/Nina/…Henrik, Maxi/Lulu…without going into everyone my point is I DO think they’re giving other characters stories and I think they’re distributing the amount of time fairly well. Ironically, while as said I’m loving Days, I think THEY concentrate on the same characters/stories (which I don’t mind because I’m enjoying all) but GH is much more diversified if for no other reason than the amount of characters they have.

Oh…and by diversified I don’t mean better…just that they actually do have quite a few stories juggling at the same time so if you don’t like one you can tune in for the others…

I must admit, though, I took to Days immediately. Have a lot of catching up to do with who’s related to who but it’s all starting to connect.

And, this will probably be because I’m a “newbie” but not sure about that dual role for Deidre Hall; her jailbird character was a tad too parody; reminded me of Nicki Smith on OLTL. Props to Ms. Hall because that loony tune portrayal was eons away from her soothing, wise, level-headed Marlena.Still…

I know, I know. I’m new. Maybe with time… 😉

Days is by far the best soap on the air right now!

Amen!

You bet…..

Now if only the DOOL threads could be, too….so much for Salem being the place to escape, CeeCeeGirl!!!!

@Shay.
Hey, there,
Hmmmm. ….you noticed?
I loooove DOOL and I looove Y&R with a passion….been watching since forever….if I need backstories or character reference, I have a private encyclopedia; my grandmother…..who, by the way, called Sonny libidinous, the other day…HaHa…
Having minored in linguistics—-specifically French and Italian ( English goes without saying), I am well-equipped for the challenge.
No deterrent for me…..after a while, people will take “whatever” at face value.
To me, Shay? DOOL is so many steps above GH, albeit I am enjoying a few storylines …..love what’s to come with the scheming Nelle,, Valentin and his Cassadine baggage ( wonder what’s in them, LOL) ….I like to ‘hear’ or ‘entendre’ more of Kim, whom I think is the key to Drew’s regaining his memory…..I am simply grateful we have these remaining soaps….the complaining by some of us is human nature….regardless, we still love our soaps.
But, Days has had dips and highs ( speaking of such….the NYSE, which is driving the men in my family crazy, LOL) , and now Days is on a hilltop, which, I hope, will climb further and further…..everything about Days is grrrreat !!
The John Black thing is a little ‘terrorizing’ for lack of a better word. Where are Paul and Will? Did I miss something? Have you been watching? Please say yes??

One would have to be blind as a bat not to notice, CeeCeeGirl! But I hear ya!……Your gran is quite the treasure trove of information, not to mention very gifted in her powers of observation ….”libidinous?” That’s putting it mildly!…(Oh, by the way….the latest season of “Shetland” has just commenced, so I am again entranced by the beautiful tranqulity of the Scottish landscapes and the baffling mysteries at hand…..is she watching it, too????) Having said that, I give both DOOL and Y&R great credit for remaining much more faithful to their legacy characters and soap histories than GH has in the past five years or so….I’m not interested in Port Charles reinvented, which is what we seem to keep getting on a regular basis….just the mere fact that I can “visit” Salem or Genoa City and recognize half the people from decades ago or discuss them here with you tells us that these shows respect longtime viewers in a way that GH does not. I only wish that we had the constant flow of returning vets to Port Charles like Salem seems to be welcoming….instead all we have to look forward to are more “newbies” from FV’s trips to the supermarket or parking lot!

I’ve lost respect for GH with the horrible rewrites and actor shuffling just to accommodate the return of Steve Burton. The show unfortunately chose to put all their eggs into 1 basket and it shows in the lack of creative storylines for the rest of the cast. If the show continues to focus on the 3 most annoying characters -Sonny, Jason, Carly-and glorify their negative behaviors, viewers will continue to tune out.

What you said, Barbie! 🙂

I haven’t seen GH since Laura’s (Genie Francis) last appearance. When she is back, I am back.

Metoo! 🙂

Well…too much Sonny is a bad thing…they can write for Sonny for over 20 years but cant write a simple Mayoral race for Genie…Jason may as well change his name to Corinthos just like traitor Micheal…Nelle pretends to sleep with Sonny ect and Micheal is so angry about that but can give a pass to Sonny who murdered his real father AJ!…sick of Mama Bear Carly and her three little bears Sonny, Micheal and Jason who she treats like children…Jason is a grown man who can make his own choices…proof is in the ratings-bring back Genie full time and stop make the show everything about Sonny…

Thank you for making these points, Jimh! Well said!

Thanks…i might not always reply but i do enjoy reading your posts !!!

You go, Jimmy!!!!
Confounding how and why Sonny (and gang) is venerated. I don’t get it !!!! Not sympathetic and not simpatico.
The biggest difference between Sonny and all the other baddies on my soaps ( Stefano, Victor K, Victor N, Vivian etc.) is that they do not pretend to be sainted.

I did stop watching but did tune in to see Max Gail even if it did involve Sonny…i did like Rita but she seems too good to be true-wouldnt mind her staying-wish she was related to Nelle…Sonny and Carly would flip…will watch full time if Genie returns full time!!!

Thank you, Jimh! I always enjoy reading your posts as well! Take care, Friend.

The main plotline will be Sonny and Carly….with Nelle doing every nasty rhing under the sun to disrupt their halcyon days, ugh….I can’t help but root-root for her, Jimmy.
this soap is becoming too transparent…..Peter will be a major character…..not too thrilled about that.

Peter does have some slight resemblance to Nathan. I watched him lean towards Nathan’s casket and I could see them being brothers. I just hope he is not Anna’s son. Valentin says Anna had a girl. Is it a smoke screen? Probably. But then again, Griffin is so feminine, I could see him being Anna’s daughter! And Frisco, why couldnt he be there for Maxie? Maybe he was unavailable? Maybe he is through with daytime? I dont know. I hope some day he returns full time and unseats that moron Jordan and becomes Police Commissioner!

PS.
Are you still watching Y&R, Jimmy? Wouldn’t it be great if Genie came back as Genevieve? I loved her ‘association’ with Victor…..she truly had that elusive savoir-faire when dealing with him….always even-toned but to the point.
The only dissent is being Cane’s mother…he doesn’t deserve her. LOL. He doesn’t deserve anyone…
Colin should return with Jill, as well…..imagine what a tumultuous triangle that would make…..!

Hey, Jimmy,
I like Max….but, I can’t help thinking of Kinda-sorta-little-off-kilter Det, “Wojo”—-I can’t seem to take him too seriously, as Sonny’s father. LOL.
Barney Miller was my dad’s favorite sitcom, back in the day…..he still watches repeats. …Oh, and Kojak ( sp?).

Happy Valentine’s Day, Jimh!!!! Hope you are well……

Why are rating levels even news anymore? It’s always the same order.:YR,BB, GH, DOOL. Ok, so GH and DOOL may flip flop on who’s up or down (in some demo) when the ratings are announced, but really the networks are going to do what they want to do regardless of viewer input. The actors and all involved work hard to put on a daily program, some s/ls fail while others ‘take off” but basically we all want the last 4 remaining network soaps to remain on the air. Feedback from the network would be useful to better understand what they are looking for – excuse me, I suppose that answer would be cash-flow and favorable publicity.

These are BEFORE the Genie boycott.

The ratings are down because whoever is in charge thinks viewers want more Sonny, when they clearly don’t. If there’s anything other than outrage at how Genie was treated that her firing revealed it’s that viewers are SICK of Sonny. The social reaction on Twitter has not been kind.

Ratings are headed down cause they took a great potential triangle and made a mess of it. There’s no passion on any side. It’s just really boring–the whole story is told and acted in monotones

The rewriting of Anna’s history is a travesty.

Days (and I’m a new viewer) is rocking it because they integrate their cast better. No one is shoved down our throats like Sonny is on GH. They include their vets in the stories. And the stories are vaired. There’s mystery, romance, drama and humor. When’s the last time we saw that on GH?

Hi Lucy D ..
You can boycott all you want but it makes absolutely no difference in the rating numbers.
Only, only the Neilsen households are counted in the ratings.
If you are not of the Nielsen rating families then your boycotting is not noticed in the rating numbers…
You are less than a 1% estimate of what the Neilsen families watch 🙁

This is a reply to your reply to my not watching. I didn’t say anything about Neilsens. I was simply speaking about the ignominy and how long I had watched–from the very first episode of GH. and the fact that I had not watched since Genie’s last scenes and that enough is enough.
Ratings, smatings. 🙂 : ) 🙂
It’s feelings I’m talking about!!!!!!!

I didn’t say I was boycotting. I said before THE boycott.
I’m aware of how the ratings work.

I’m also aware TIIC check social media & the comment line. So I’ve voiced my opinion there

Su0000 live watching and watching DVR within 48 are counted with ratings.

Lucy, you say it well.

Thanks Nancy

Glad you are watching Days now Lucy, it really is the best soap again since Ron C. started writing last summer.

It really is. I can’t wait to watch every day. It’s got it all!

Happy watching, Lucy R.

Thanks Celia. I haven’t totally given up on GH yet, but there’s not a lot for me to enjoy. Days entertains me every day

@Shay.
Hey, Shay,
We are on the same wavelength, as most long-time watchers. ‘Sweetness’ is Steve’s and Kayla’s trademark….as is, ‘baby’. It’s what separates this couple from all the rest…little, nuances all their own. Without the ‘sweetness’, there would be no Steve and Kayla.
When Steve was ‘away’ for an interminate amount of time, I missed not only him, but also, the sweetness, HaHa.

I agree with Barbie on several things .The show has made some decisions that has lost viewers..fans .It is not the Sonny,SB,Carly show. Bring back Genie/Laura ,and Nikolas character since I am sure Tyler will not be leaving Days, but Nick Stabile was quite good .Stop with all the new people qwhen

GH is circling the drain because the writers are turning GH into something that is Not GH.
GH once wore the crown of ” not a traditional” soap.

It had what no other soap had.. the mob, the villains, the grey characters the intriguing families as the bad and the good Cassidines.

GH was Adventure, Suspense, intrigue, mysteries, thrills, high drama, and yes intense love stories.

GH has lost its’ soul, it has lost its’ way.

The writers need to dust off the scripts from the 80-90’s and bring back the glory days GH with a 21st-century spin.

Every single dark/grey, layered villains, bad guys really bad guys and the good guys, all gone.
GH has become the land of Saints.
Boring stale Blah do nothing Saints.

GH needs to find its’ self because it is gutted of everything that once made it great.

What I said, su0000! NOW, you’re talking.

Only watch Days. Good show. Great character development. Someone knows how to plan.

Yes, Days is the best soap on.

So many new Days viewers, blake….blows the mind….

Great news for Days, and well deserved!

DAYS is the show to beat right now. Romance, mystery, humor, family — the show is delivering everything a soap should be right now.

B&B is a total miss for me with its tired recycling of the same old couples/plots/formula.

GH is a mess with Laura’s absence, Anna’s retconned Faison baby, the boring Jason/Sam/Drew triangle, and the show’s continued insistence on making Sonny be a part of everything.

Y&R is almost completely unwatchable at this point with its lack of stories or direction. Each episode just feels like a collection of scenes about people who kind of resemble characters we used to know. Cane/Lily and Billy/Phyllis continue to be the worst pairings in daytime and this Chelsea thing may be the most random overnight character change since SANTA BARBARA’s Eden Capwell woke up with multiple personalities — jewel thief Lisa and artist Suzanne Collier — to justify Marcy Walker’s exit.

I don’t like what Y&R is doing to Chelsea either. I think it would have been better for Adam to return and Chelsea and Connor go away with him.

Yes, Mo. why is Chelsea being written out this way?….I am not into the character ( since Adam left), but, if she goes out in shame, there will be no doors open. I want Adam back….. I want Chelsea back….as recasts, if all else fails.
I t seems that SuperVictor saved the day….Chelsea is safe for now. Lauren bought it, but Phyllis is not convinced. I guess it takes one to know one.
If Adam is alive, then he and Chelsea must find another way to get into the proverbial getaway-car.

Well…no sympathy here! If you didn’t get rid of Genie Francis just as “Laura” was to get a bonafide story of her own, the ratings wouldn’t have hit the skids! Bad move GH and a VERY STUPID ONE! Of course, ABC IS the network that did get rid of All My Children and One Life To Live, so this is no surprise! I guess TPTB are trying to get General Hospital canceled also!! UGH!! UGH!! UGH!!

GH’s ratings are down because of the nails on the chalkboard characters and stories of Nelle, Griffin, Franco, Alexis, Amy, Jordan, Lulu, Peter and goofy Mike, not because of Genie! Let it go!

I agree with most of your list, my Timmmy ( still luv-ya, LOL)—except for Nelle and Griffin.
Nelle is fun to watch—she is such an entertaining chameleon…. those luminous eyes can fill with so much evil one moment, and with a torrent of tears, the next.
Besides, she is sticking it to Carly….and Sonny….and hopefully, wah-wah-I-want-mommy-Michael. Be still mine heart ! I seek….no, demand satisfaction. LOL.
Griffin? Well, my handsome, Cyber-friend, T—-he’s just too hot to let go. He is, actually, the only absolutely drop-dead-gorgeous guy left on this show!

I luv you to my little cyber Valentine! Nelle, okay, I’ll give you that, she lights up Carly! Griffin, he is just too pretty! Just not manly enough! Handsome, yes. I guess his main problem is he hasnt found his way on the show. Him and Liz would have been good together. Speaking of couples, I am thinking Michael and Kiki might be ready for a second go? Nelle would hit the roof!

Thank you, my T……Happy Valentine’s Day….
….now, you better make sure you take your better half to an elegant restaurant ….’festoon’ her with heart-shaped bonbons and red roses….no Burger King, tomorrow night, you hear?
Yes…. I got the same vibe from Michael and Kiki. Poor Kiki….I sooo liked her with Dillon. ….terrible move by TPTB.
Michael is too gloomy for me and whether he feels he is his own man, he is completely and subconsciously under his mother’s influence. That virago could drive the most sane person batty.
Griffin! Sigh! Hunky-dory! Shhh….don’t tell Jude. LOL.

Hello, Timmmbo! I have to agree with “Double C””” on this one…Nelle and Griffin should stay. However, I’ll add Nina to your must-go list, which will not please her…LOL. Hey, we all have our own favorites…and bete noires!

Nooooo….it does not please me!!!! Nina MUST stay!!!! LOL.
HVD, Shay…ma belle amie.

Shayster, Michelle needs to return to Y&R and Devon needs to apply at Applebees!

From your lips to the “SoapGod’s” ears, Timmm….I totally agree! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy V Day to you to my little feline friend!

Yay for Days!

Oh, and by the way, everyone who hated all Victor’s screen time wish, which by the way has diminished, look what you get now “The Devon Hour!” Enjoy!

I’m still confused as to why Hilary sold GC Buzz.

Hmmmm, Mo…..thanks for bringing that up. I am at a loss, here. I’m sure there is a reason….If there is, I forgot.
I seem to remember someone wanting to buy it and if so, Mariah and others would lose their jobs? So, Devon stepped in?….not sure, though.

I know….I’ll take despicable Victor anytime.
However, T….I doubt the viewers had anything to do with Victor’s ‘s peek-a-boo appearances.
Perhaps, he would rather spend time with his family in these; his later years of life.
Devon is a joke….and, propping him up as the billionaire philanthropist and dashing week-end-Don Juan-about-town-and-universe, makes him look even more foolish. He does not cut the impressive figure of the tycoon he is purported to portray.

Victor woll never retire but yeah, maybe he is slowing down on purpose. I think they are gearing up for a big story that involves him, this Spring. Could be Adam, Chloe and Kevin involved?

Devon sucks! Kay gave him 2 BILLION dollars and he did nothing to deserve it! EVERY scene he is in he weakens the scene because he sucks!

I think that Devon is getting a lot of air time and story that probably would have gone to the character of Neil but since KSJ is still of the show just a guess.

no you’re correct. They said that somewhere, that Devon is getting scenes originally intended for Neil. So I’m cutting them some slack there

Kay, that is a good theory.

Very good guess, Kay….as always.
My issue is the way Devon is written…..no substance; no lure. All about Tessa and her insipid music….no storyline……cannot be a sub for Neil. But, I get it…..just give core and meat to Devn’s persona.
Neil is a sight for sore eyes, with the added fringe benefit of talent.
I suggest TPTB put Devon and Hilary in bed and make a baby….
For Mishael and the showrunners ‘puttng’ this pregnancy ‘thing’, constantly, center stage, suggests she is already pregnant, in real life. Maybe??
I, at least, think that Devon and Hilary will end up together, in the longrun….so, please, I beg ye gods to just get on with it…….the prolonged misery of seeing nothing but air, when it comes to Devon, is killing me. LOL.

Days still is not as good as GH. There are still sparks of brilliance at GH and when Ron was there it was even better. There was a synergy with him and all the writers. Thatis why GH just won a Writers’ Guild Award. I hate all the stories for the most part on Days right now. I did like the Bonnie/T-BOZ and that doppelganer thing though.

SONY – NBC – Days of OUR Lives… The Queen has arrived

pass the torch and let the reign begin

From one Brady sister to another… Sami Brady to Carrie Brady.

Christie Clark is flabbergasting… just ALL – out – their PRESENT knowing ALIVE and dang she’s never been HOTTER

R – A – F – E your lover is back.

we need this fierce lady

she’s the absolute beacon and our sands through the hourglass.

These ratings are a shadow of what the soaps once possessed. Interestingly, only B&B never “struggled.” Even Y&R took a nosedive in the late 70’s. But kind of cool to see how GH and DAYS have gone back and forth like yo-yo’s

Okay, let’s be real here. The ratings increased because the GH fans who miss Tyler like crazy came over to watch him on Days. It has nothing to do with Carlivati poor writing because the Whodunit isn’t that great. Keep it, real people. Tyler increased those ratings not story.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Marlena Looks Back at 50 Years in Salem

Published

on

By

The June 22 episode of Days of Our Lives reminded us all of why Deidre Hall is iconic in the role of Dr. Marlena Evans. Here we are 50 years later, and Marlena is still the heroine of the long-running soap opera, and Deidre remains one of the most most recognizable names in the history of soaps.

To pay tribute, and to look back at the life and times of Marlena, the story starts with Marlena flipping through a photo album of her with John (the late Drake Hogestyn) over the years. As she misses him dearly, she gets a knock on the door and its none other than John’s son, Paul Narita (Christopher Sean).

With Andrew (Colton Little) in Salem working on a case, he sits down with Marlena, who says she can’t believe its been fifty years since she first arrived in Salem! Cue: Deidre’s first scenes on DAYS when she finds Mickey Horton (the late John Clarke) playing chess against himself inside the mental institution she worked.

THE FLASHBACKS OF MARLENA’S LIFE

From there, viewers definitely got the cliff notes version of the history of Marlena and entrenched within them, some of the biggest moments in Deidre’s enduring run.

Paul thinks he is looking at 70s, and early 80s Marlena while going through her scrapbook, but he is actually looking at her twin, Samantha (Andrea Hall)Cue: when Marlena confronted Samantha about impersonating her, and then later getting a call on her radio show from the Salem Strangler (Jack Coleman as Jake Kostichek) who killed Samantha thinking it was Marlena.

In the present, Belle (Martha Madison) has arrived at this time to meet up with Paul, unaware of this trip down memory lane. She wants to go over the findings in the chess board mystery Stefano willed to Marlena and John, in private with him, since Marlena previously said she wanted nothing to do with it.

Back to the history lesson, Marlena speaks highly of Don Craig and even though their marriage didn’t work out, she could find a path forward with the new love her life, Roman Brady. (Wayne Northrop however is never shown, possibly to keep the story focused on John as Roman for confusion sakes?)

Paul sees a photo of a young Carrie (Christie Clark) in the album and Marlena says she was such a godsend after losing her baby. In fact, Marlena says caring for Carrie prepared her for her having and raising her own twins, Eric and Sami. Cue: The twin visiting Marlena in the hospital.

JOHN AND MARLENA’S LOVE CONQUERED ALL

Then, in a way to get through and incorporate the wild storylines only Marlena could have been in, she tells Belle and Paul, she has been through so much in her life, how lucky she was to find John, and some of the most unbelievable experiences no one could imagine. Cue: Marlena possessed by the devil and levitating from the bed. Next, John confronting Marlena being the Salem Stalker, where she admits she killed Alice Horton, pretends she needs help, then pulls a gun on her beloved John!

The comment is made by Paul and Marlena, that she literally has been to hell and back and she could not have survived were it not for her beloved John. Cue the big emotional highpoint clips; The Pier Scene! Marlena steps out of the fog when John sees her from a distance. After believing she was dead for four years, here she was before him in one of the greatest reunions in a soap opera love story in history. What followed were other times of the life of times of Jarlena.

MARLENA’S ‘GIFT’ FROM STEFANO HAS A NEW CLUE

When Marlena makes a brief exit to the other room, Belle fills in Paul on the chess set Stefano left her mother and the photo of the Lire. Paul said he will investigate. Marlena comes back into the room and overhears, and says to promise her if things get dangerous he will back off, she does not want anyone hurt by Stefano’s games.

As the episode comes to a conclusion, it’s just Belle and Marlena going through the photo album giggling about 70s hairstyles and all the memories. Belle speaks on the impact Marlena has had in everyone’s lives, and that she is both the heart of their family and the heart of Salem.

An end card comes up acknowledging Deidre Hall’s 50th anniversary as Marlena, and we fade to black.

Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.

Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.
