The ratings are out for the week of December 12th through the 16th, and it was NBC’s Days of our Lives who came out with the most gains in viewers across the board.

The long-running soap increased in total viewers +52,000 bringing its tally to 2,336,000.  DAYS was the only soap to be on the plus side for the week in that category with Y&R losing the most vieweers with -37,000.

In addition, DAYS was up in the key 18-49 womens demo, and only GH scored in the plus column as well showing some solid gains. Both DAYS and GH were on the plus side in the 25-54 demo with the folks in Salem adding +26,000 viewers, and the folks in Port Charles adding +21,000.  DAYS was also the only soap up in viewers in the 18-34 category.

The CBS soaps of The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful struggled a bit for this ratings period.  Y&R tied an all-time low in the 18-49 ratings share for the 11th straight week, while B&B tied an all-time low in this ratings share for the 2nd straight week.  B&B also continued to tie an all-time low in the 18-34 ratings share. General Hospital also tied an all-time low in the demo, as well.

One programming note that hurt GH this ratings period. It was the only soap opera with a full pre-emption on their Friday episode due to President Obama’s news conference.  View the entire ratings picture via SON here.

Numbers are based on Live+Same Day ratings

(Compared to Last Week/Compared to Last Year)

Total Viewers
1. Y&R 4,622,000 (-37,000/-152,000)
2. B&B 3,704,000 (-22,000/+107,000)
3. GH 2,634,000 (-20,000/-183,000)
4. DAYS 2,336,000 (+52,000/-129,000)

I stopped watching YR last week, I just couldn’t take anymore of the Newman family hour. It’s totally unbelievable. In addition to entirely too much Faith and the fourth rendition of Victoria & Billy. Took YR off my DVR and put GH on it and have been happy ever since.

the cast balance has gotten worse under Sally. its the same 4 to 5 people on everyday

Agree. And unfortunately it looks like this week will be more of The Young and the Newmans, Devon and Hillary with the same fight they’ve had for 6 months now and Mariah still crying over her fall.
I give up.

Be patient if by February she has not turned it around then yes bitch away

The Newmans anchor the show like the Corinthos at GH. Its a fact.

Wow–I am enjoying Y&R more than ever now. Be patient, Sally Sussman is just moving the chess pieces back to their rightful places in order to prepare for the game.
Right now I watch every minute of Y&R while I fast forward through 80 percent of GH on a daily basis.
But yes, that petulant little brat Faith is on way too much and the Newmans are spoiling that child rotten. I guess she knows she is in the driver’s seat.

No one will be happy till there’s no soaps left at all and they’ll have no one to blame but themselves. Constantly bitching…tuning out And allowing ratings drop…and i say…you’ll get what you deserve and that will be THAT!!! SUPPORT OUR DAMNED SHOWS PEOPLE!!! GROW UP!!

There is anchoring the show and then there is overload. The new writing started on December 7, for a total of 15 episodes. Fourteen of those episodes have included Victor, Nikki, Nick and Faith – all of them on the episode or at least 2 of them. Utterly ridiculous when you have a cast like YR which is loaded with 10-20 year veteran characters.

And by the way, the show is suppose to be anchored by the Newmans and the Abbotts.

yes , i sadly remember how sally sussman’s writing was disastrous and boring on the soap she both created and wrote for ” Generations ” which ran on nbc from 1989 to 1991 , the ratings were so bad the soap was cancelled after just 2 years , she turned days of our lives into an absolute bore when she wrote for it . if you want a talking heads soap watch her writing. you will be bored to death and sussman has her favourites too ! We deserve good written soaps , well put together , i don’t know watch all episodes from the 70’s , 80’s and early 90’s on youtube alone of shows like guiding light , days of our lives , another world etc and you should be able to figure it out : where is the candlelight lovemaking with a popular song being used in the background , where are the dramatic musical tunes used when some accident , drama or big secret is revealed , why don’t you look into the psychology of the character to show on screen his inner conflits , torture and trauma .

I am enjoying DAYS right now…. LOVE Marci Miller’s take on Abby! Here’s hoping for more ratings upticks… just hope if CBS acquires SONY that they don’t cancel DAYS!

I agree. This show should not be on bottom. Please fans tune in. Much better than at least 2 of the other 3. Keeping with subject, hope more tune in.

Missed several episodes but the show seems to have slightly improved…dont know if Days will ever get out of 4th but its better than cancellation

it has greatly improved ! watch !

The preemption didn’t hurt GH unless the Friday ratings would’ve been high because the ratings are based on the average for the week. Instead of 5 episodes’ numbers divided by 5 for the average, it was 4 episodes’ numbers divided by 4 for the average. The 4 day week of GH may have actually helped.

The soaps that were actually impacted were the ones that aired new episodes that interrupted. My guess is DAYS was interrupted more than Y&R and B&B because DAYS is on later than Y&R and B&B in most areas, which is when the Presidential Speech was.

GH was more than likely hurt by the Friday preemption based on the day to day.

Thursday was the most watched day of the week…with a 300,000 improvement over Wednesday…so they were picking up steam going into Friday.

What was a small loss in viewers, could’ve been a small gain.

I stopped watching when they ended Philly. Now Sally decided to pretend they never happened and they can’t even share scenes anymore.

I’m not here for a 56th failed Villy reunion. That ship has sailed and this version has no chemistry.

GC Buzz and Brash and Sassy are terrible storylines. Faith gets more screentime than Phyllis and Chelsea combined.

It’s the Newman hour but Nikki, Victor and Nick are just trash. Viewers are not amnesiac. Just because Victor is nice with his granchildren doesn’t excuse his crimes. It happened. Prtedning nothing happened is not how you redeem a character.

the writing is outdated. it’s like the writers are trying to pretend the last ten years never happened. the Newmans are not as popular as they used to be

Billy and Phyllis should never have happened and it was ended by the old writing regime not the new ones.

@Robert

“Thank You”

my first exclamation… then

“oh my god”

gawd… gosh darned it… the truth as we speak

“…the Newmans are not as popular as they used to be”

seriously people ?

they are not the caliber they once reigned

HOW MANY TIMES will they LORD over us… all of Genoa City… and watch what? the rewards… how smug … how unexciting… how uninviting

what’s the point.. what’s the payoff… JUST VICTOR ?

REASON people… we never see Nikki, Nicholas, Victoria.. sharing in the squander of people.. including the Abbott

how much more fun is their left?

Victor and Eric Breadon are so boring… YES I will go their…

what pull.. what aplomb… he STEALS this show right in front of us

and CBS / Sony / Y&R are well aware of this ? excrement…

ps: I love the Abbotts… that’s where the regime.. behind the scenes score

I agree with everything you said BUT the writers material hasnt even aired a month yet! Give them some time to take out the trash!

I stopped watching B&B too boring same old story’s recycled…

me too ! isn’t it awful now !

Great news for Days! I’m watching the show regularly now because of the growing romance between Chad and Gabi. The actors have fantastic chemistry.

Chad had chemistry and that indefinable, sensational spark, which is so rare between characters.
Billy Flynn is one sexy guy….Camila Banus, not so much. Pretty, yes; very…..sexy? No!
Sadly, neither is Marci Miller, albeit her acting is extraordinary. I did see a sensuality within Abby in her few intimate moments with Chad. So, perhaps there is a scintilla of a flame there. It just needs to be fanned.
I, generally, do not advocate wearing too much make-up….but, Abby needs to bring out those beautiful, luminous eyes more…..unless her hair is darkened. Her face just blends into her hair. She has gorgeous feautures, but they get lost, somehow.
Now, about Chad. I think he is still madly in love with his wife. His hurt heart and bruised ego stand in his way….and, of course there must be some drama and undercurrent….it’s a soap.
I must admit that finally DAYS captured my interest. I watched over a week’s worth of episodes without being bored….as I was with GH and Y&R.
As a DOOL watcher from its inception, my grandmother is so thrilled, she couldn’t wait for me to watch and catch up .
I wish Days the longevity it deserves.

Sorry, ….I meant to say that Chad had that rare chemistry with the other Abby ( Kate Manzi). I do not see it with Gabi.
In contrast, I think JJ and Gabi ” got it going”. Too bad all relationships on soaps MUST be challenged or ruined. LOL.

have to get this in… in the year end… BEST OF… 2016 SOD issue:

there was a poll : it is what it is

they ranked the best shows of the year…

#1 General Hospital
#2 Days of OUR Lives
#3 Young & Restless
#4 Bold & Beautiful

Come ON DAYS…. love you

For the first time in years I’m actually watching Y&R episodes the same day they air. Sally Sussman is slowly turning Y&R back to its roots and it shows: characters are acting like themselves again and the plot isn’t revolving around South American crimelord dopplegangers or the latest natural disaster to hit Genoa City.

I don’t think GH’s ratings will improve until Jean and Shelly are replaced as headwriters.

Thank you, Alan. I was starting to think I was the only one really enjoying Y&R right now. It’s become must see TV for me now and I do not fast forward through any of it.
GH is so damn badly written. I truly think the writers never know where they’re going with a story and make it up as they go along. This was certainly true of the Hospital Serial Killer story. Hell, even Paul Hornsby looked shocked to realize he was the killer.
I think they’re making it up as they go along also with the who-planted-the-bomb-in Julian’s car as well as trying to explain Nell’s motivation. At this point the end result is that viewers like me are saying,”Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” I am feeling like GH’s writing team are replicating the pattern they established on Y&R as seen with that abysmal music box mystery.

I for one am enjoying Y&R , Sally and Kay have only just started the Fans have to take into account we had two years of Pratt remember.. I mean at least the show is coming back to where it’s watchable. I give these ladies Credit, they walked into one Big mess and cleaned it up in less then a few days but we are still in that repair mode, the fans have to be patient.

Pretending things never happened (Philly, Marco, the endless list of Victor’s crimes, Christian being Adam’s son …) is not a way to fix things. It’s just insulting to viewers.

i agree. you can’t erase what we’ve already seen.

But they have not erased those things you mention, Lauren. The characters have mentioned Victor’s crimes and Chelsea and Victor have discussed Christian’s paternity.

I agree ; she’s doing what was done when the writers ignored what Phyllis did to Cricket and Paul.

the writing at Y&R is not improving. the pacing and the balance has actually gotten worse. i can’t take much more of the Newman hour. i don’t buy Victor suddenly being a saint or acting like Billy and Phyllis didn’t happen. theirs not one interesting story. Newman overload,Faith hogging airtime,GC Buzz,Villy and the chemistryless Nick and Chelsea are the leading factors for the ratings fall

I think they are just leveling the playing field between Jack and Victor, Robert. For the last year Victor has been a mustache twitting, one dimensional, over-the-top cartoon villain while Jack has basically been a passive, weak minded wuss in need of a spine. Suddenly Victor is a cuddly Teddy Bear while Jack is a man in need of rage management therapy.
Victor will revert back to type and Jack will eventually temper his anger and those two will go toe to toe again without black and white thinking dictating the dichotomy of their relationship.

Ahem, that’s twitching, not twitting.

I love how contrasting people’s opinions here are about The Young and the Restless.

Well,
It is the fault of the Nielsen Rating families- all their fault.
It is what They watch (not what we watch) that are the rating numbers and many have bad tastes in soaps (as to which they watch)

Personally, I would fire them all … lol
They are letting our soaps down!

GH sucks, stinks, has turned to junk lol ..
It is totally empty of ;
Drama – Intrigue – Suspense – Adventure – Mystery – Excitement – Plots – and Humor.

Y&R is so-so, nothing to applaud over.
It is totally empty of;
Drama – Intrigue – Suspense – Adventure – Mystery – Excitement – Plots – and Humor.

really.. the soaps use to hold intrigue..
The stories have no solid plot.
There has not a WOW! unexpected moment in years.
Actually, the stories have been empty of most everything soapy.

Most of an episoide is FF , why? because it’s too boring to watch.
What isn’t FF through is the hope, the hope that someday soon New Writers with New Ideals/Visions are found.

J&S are pathetically dull and are totally the wrong writers for GH.
They are the Queens of Snooze ..

The New Y&R writer has been a knock-off of J&S ..

Fact– the soaps have too many stupid moments and are sleepers, theses days.. they need a ruff awakening.

Guzza, and others, never put us to sleep.. The writers of past never put us in nod-out mode nor did we FF through 70 % of an episode.
the soaps can be good again, they can..
Our soaps are only as good as the writers .

Long Live Our Soaps … they are loved !!!

Be patient sometimes it takes weeks to take out the garbage but yes I am also sick of the Newman have been for years and why does Nick always win! Writers fact a child can never get too much love Dylan did nothing wrong why should he be punished? I hated this storyline Nick once again wins no one seemed to have a problem with hm keeping a lie for years yes he proved to be the father but we weren’t sure crappy writing but they wrote it ! Sally you have to address the past we saw it on screen address it correct it but don’t just drop it. Have you ever heard making a decision for all the wrong reasons That was Sharon why are we not going after the hospital the nurse etc total misstep this is not all on Sharon’s back I hate what Phelps and Pratt did with stories that never happened but get a broom and clean it up

Merry Christmas and the best to all in 2017

Thank you, Kay. Well put.

Hey Kay…
Something was very wrong with the way the Sully story ended. Well, the story is actually just beginning…..
Holier-than-thou, Nick, or anyone else, for that matter, did not stop to think what this idiocy does to a child.
Christian knew Sharon as his mother and Dylan as his father. I am not condoning what Sharon did….but, one does not just ‘take’ a baby, cold turkey, from the only parents he ever knew. He was torn from them. That is so traumatic for a baby….as I always say; soap or not; add some reality to it.
Where is the love for the boy? Going to a strange home? Not crying for his Mommy? So weir…. as a rule, babies want their mothers, AT ALL TIMES. A subject never discussed?
That transition should have been dealt with care….Christian should have been eased into his new “home”.
The only one worth her salt is, Faith. Yet, even she is being brain-washed. ….of all people; living with possibly the worst parents on earth; Victor and Nikki. Sacrebleu et quel dommage!!

i’m actually enjoying GH, I think the storylines are playing out better now, Valitine Cassadine is really and interesting character and love his pairing w/ Nina, and what is his connection w/Anna? i’m hooked. I don’t find any storyline currently playing out boring and thats a good thing. Just keep it up GH…

I agree, Aria. Guess GH isn’t for everyone, but it’s keeping me entertained. I love Valentin and Nina together. James Patrick Stuart is doing such a great job. He plays Valentin with just the right mix of vulnerability and danger. Not to mention it’s been good to see Michelle Stafford with something to do again.

I agree with Aria and Dan

I agree, GH is quite interesting now. A very talented cast.

I like the Valentin episodes, also.

It is impossible to make everyone happy. A LOT of people hated Pratt’s work and the ratings proved that. Ratings change from week to week and with the recent holidays, that could be the reason. We really have to give new writers more than a week or two to turn a show around. DAYS is somewhat improving and that took a while, because my gosh, it was unwatchable for a bit. B&B needs to STOP recycling storylines and the tiresome triangles! We all know Steffi will go back to Wyatt, because out of the blue he is her soul mate. The writing is on the wall for a Ridge and Quinn coupling, Eric turning to Katie, along with the reuniting of Bill & Brooke . The show is too predictable. Regarding Y&R, Sally Sussman and Kay Alden know the show. Please give them a chance to bring their vision to the screen and to tell compelling stories.

I stopped watching the Y/R when Michael/Adam left. The show has become SO unrealistic. Everyone attacks Sharon; lily is always on hilary; Nick is so judemental the Newman’s are always on top. Jack sounds as if he’s auditioning for a part and is so LOUD when he talks.

Lusca, Michael Muhney vacated the tole of Adam well over 2 years ago so you can’t really comment on the current quality of Y&R since you do not watch Y&R.

The reason ratings are still bad is that show sucks.

Sally’s plan is obvious. Victor propping, Villy 479th contrived reunion, Chick, GC Buzz … Who needs more time?

She has been there for three weeks and the show already has major issues.

Why does Faith get more screentime than Phyllis, Lauren or chelsea ?

I agree Faith is given wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too much attention, both within the context of the show and within the idea of air time.
But Sally has taken Lauren and Michael off the shelf, dusted them off and allowed them to be their charming and funny selves again while bantering with Gloria.
We have barely even seen Lauren these last few years.
And Sally is making Sharon a somewhat sane, good person capable of putting her husband and children ahead of herself. Moreover, Mairah, one of my favorite soap characters of all time, is being given her own front burner storylines. There is some good stuff going on here!

I agree, Addison. There is lots of good stuff, and I am enjoying every
moment of it! More Lauren is great, more Mariah…just everything!

i love days of our lives even if its kinda boring its still to me the only good soap left on tv altho i would like to see some old faces come back and actually stay for more than 1 or 2 episodes that would be nice and id like to see something good happen for nicole its been forever since anything good has happened to her or for her just my opinion tho

After a hiatus I turned into Days today. How could the actors playing Ciara and Clair still be on? Dreadful…..they may as well been holding their scripts in hand and reading from them. No inflection, no variation in tone……sheesh.

Please no more same storylines boring same sh…. Brooke Bill Ridge. Steffy, Liam and Quinn and her begging son need a new writer

They need something!

Maybe when Brad gets back in the country he will start writing again

Bottom line GH keep Becky front and center if she talked to the phone book she would have chemistry ! Best actress BH she puts no effort it just flows thru her I am in awe of how she just does it

RH must be doing back flips that he is working with a actress that just does it no effort no upstaging she just gets it I adore her

I adore her too. I like Lizzy and Franco together but just wish it didn’t involve a rapist, a dog crate and a dog electric shock collar. They don’t need all those bells and whistles.
I do not appreciate the writers using Lizzy’s rape to prop up Franco.

I’ve become a fan of Rebecca Herbst as welll. She is supremely talented and exquisitely beautiful.
However, I never watched GH until Roger Howarth brought Todd Manning to the canvas after OLTL was cancelled.
Right now, I honestly wish that OLTL would be resurrected once again on ABC (as was reported in Soaps Indepth). After suffering through the torture on one romantic story line dead end after another for Franco, I yearn for a Todd and Blair reunion asap!!!
I invested time in Todd/Franco and Carly, only to watch her cheat on him with Sonny. Then, everything blew up when he jilted her at the wedding from hell on Halloween.
Next, I had high hopes for Franco and Nina. All was wonderful while they were at Shadybrook. Once liberated, they were forgotten and only made love once or twice (Howarth’s ONLY love scenes on GH in three years!!!!)
Now, the awesome chemistry between Rebecca and Roger is being wasted. First, they were mired in the stupid hospital killer saga.
Today, he is spinning his wheels in another ridiculous plot involving rape . . .
Moreover, I am so sick and tired with Roger’s characters chronically and constantly being investigated, arrested, on trial and jailed for one crime after another. When, I see him in a police station, I literally want to scream NO MORE!!!
Hopefully, it’s not too late to salvage Friz’ potential love story!!!
Still, nothing would be better than to have Todd and Blair Manning back. BTW, I hope Kassie DePaivia is in remission and able to delight us with her talents sometime soon!!

Glad that Days’ ratings are improving. Although, there are still strides to be made on the show. Several storylines are not working (Eduardo and Dario/Jade and Joey) along with some actors (although some much needed cuts have occurred).

Right now, B&B is my fave with Quinn and Eric.

I didnt reply to anyone specifically but I am shocked how negative people are about the new writers. Are you the same people who bitched about Pratt? Come on, give Sally a freakin chance. She has to reshape the show that went to shit. Some stories were so bad I’m glad she is ignoring history! She has to get back to the core of the show and thats Newmans first, Abbotts, Chancelors, Baldwins and such. Her stories will blossom past the “Victor Show, eventually!”

Thank you, Timm. Quite frankly, I was surprised as I see a lot of good things going on here.

Their are a lot of good things happening but for me the Newman need to be on the back burner for a while let us catch our breath KSJ /Neil is in desperate need of a storyline let’s give him one he has been with the show since 1991 about time he got some respect back burn Chelsea enough two years of her being front and center is too much give some of the other veterans time to shine you have a great loyal cast give them some air time that is what I wish for.

MCE has only been with the show since 2011 too much air time and Faith let’s get off that dime

answer : “the Newman need to be on the back burner for a while let us catch our breath”

argh! like @GH… LESS is MORE

enough of the Corinthos
enough of the Newmans

You make a lot of sense, Timmmy……Sally has a lot of repairing to do, just as Trump does!
There are a few episodes on Y& R that do stand out…..from a few choice characters in which I did not expect.
Billy is picking up speed. I never thought I’d say it!! Kudos, Jason Thompson.
Jason Morgan? Not….same old tone-deaf song; together with Sam? It’s a bust.
But, Valentin and Nina? Haden and Finn? Bring it on!!
Surprisingly, after being away, Days’s got it going.

Sweet Cee, Happy New Year! Not a fan of JT as Billy BUT as I have stated before, I like he and Cane’s bromance! The out of control Devon is ridiculous! First of all, he JUST won the car, its not in his name yet, no plates and no insurance! Secondly, he is blazing down the highway in a snow storm. What a billion dollar idiot! Dylan has finally come alive and now Steve is leaving! Valentin and Nina, love it. I like Nick and Hayden better together. But back on point, Sally and Co. need 6 months, and then lets look at their work. By the way, do you like the kinder gentler Mustache???

HAPPY NEW YEAR, to you, my love.
HaHaHa!!!! Oh, Victor!!!! This new persona discombobulates me, Timmmy. It goes soooo against his nature. As my husband’s grandfather would say, ” the wolf’s fur color may change, but its habit stays the same”, ( an old Italian adage….makes sense to the Italians, I guess)…..so, I am waiting for a BIG one!! When Victor finds out the rekindling of the ‘fire’ nestled beneath the ashes ( haha) between Victoria and Billy-Boy, he will not take it sitting down.
And, speaking of JT….I do agree. I will never take to him, or accept him as Billy ( We are outnumbered, Timmmy), but, I must admit, he has surprised me, lately.
He is not acting as a juvenile. Yet, even with this slight transformation, he has not embodied Billy Abbott. I doubt anyone could or will. Billy Miller, as Billy A took permanent residence in my heart. I am true blue and hard to dislodge him. LOL.
I feel the same way about Gina Tognoni. She is NOT Phyillis, albeit and by reading many posts, fans love her and JT….especially as a couple. Funny, how perception is viewed by different people. I see no “hotness” with this couple…..not a sexy bone in either of their bodies. Just my opinion.
I, also, agree about Hayden and Nick. Now, that was a passionate, stormy, steamy hot relationship.
But, I looove her with Finn. We “ain’t” seen ” nutin” yet. This is a more sedate relationship; but, they are both so sexy, we will relish in what’s to come.
Valentin is the epitome of the mysterious, suave, ‘gimme’ more kind-of-guy. Looove him. And, Nina is his perfect match. Michelle Stafford is a walking gorgeous, sex-oozing tease. As Alan ( one of the posters) calls her; Bad Girl. This couple will compust in bed…..the crew will have to call the fire department. HaHa!!
Yes, I will definitely give this writing team a break…..if they listen to me. LOL.

Yes Cee, the posters cal it PHILLY and we all know nothing EVER came out of Philadelphia that was worth it EXCEPT Rocky Balboa! Philly fans booed Santa, enough said! I agree, Gina and Jason are about as hot as an igloo in Siberia! Victor, he will play it low key UNTIL he finds out about what Chloe did to Adam. I hope Nick takes over Newman and Victor sits in the background for a bit. Whomever plays Adam, and you can bet every nickel to your name, Adam will return, I cannot wait to see Nick and Adam fight over HELLsea and Newman Enterprises!

Yup, Timmmy. This is deja-vu…..I do believe we have spoken of Adam’s eventual return before. And, feathers will fly, as I do believe Christian is really Nick’s.
That s the crux of the matter. Adam will fight for his wife and his son. It stands to reason that Nick will not just hand the baby over. So, what’s left? As I said a while back, they will battle it out in court where a paternity test will be the order of the day. Chelsea? This actress is sooo overrated, it’s ridiculous…..today was the only day the camera was not on her. The only things I admire are her wardrobe and killer shoes…..can’t compare to Melania, though……the beautiful, poised, classy, imminent First Lady….but, the women’s clothing on Y&R come pretty close.
As I, also, said….Philly gave us nothing but pretty, lacy panties, a bare man’s ‘de’toned chest and female bare limbs….nothing to see. But, it is still a matter of opinion. “Different strokes for different folks” .
Again, you got Victor’s number…low key….snake in the grass; to pounce at the ready…..wolf in sheep’s clothing.
In more uplifting news, awaiting inauguration day with bated breath…..ciao, love.

Oops. Combust, not compust.
Re: Victor….I was thinking that if he ever exits the show, I will miss him, albeit I do not like him. Does that make sense?
I think Eric makes a great percentage of what is Y& R. It just won’t be the same without him.
Days has sort of lost whatever oomph it had left since Joseph Mascolo left the show and this world.
It will be another dark day when John Aniston leaves. I grew up watching these guys….like my grandparents…..alas!!
But, coming back to Victor Newman, we must remember, Timmmy, that this is not the first time Victor has, seemingly, tucked his tail between his legs, as it were. I do believe that Adam’s death took the wind out of his sails, somewhat.
But, Victor will be Victor….his guilt will disintegrate as soon as another wall to dismantle presents itself. Hurting people, controlling them and defeating them is his life-juice; his GERITOL. LOL.

If “Days” is doing well it must be a Holiday miracle because I hate to say it but the show is bloody awful right now – the writing is atrocious – the actors are just fine, I am not blaming the actors at all who are doing their level best with horrendously written scripts –

dag… this may be a plug for @DAYS

I don’t see it… perhaps it’s due to decades plus of watching… from the best to the worst and repeat rinse recyle that I truly can declare that of the 4 soaps…

Living in Salem… is still 2nd best… GH being #1

Y&R is full steam ahead

and the boring rich @B&B STINK

Up wont last long the more they air Deimos Nicole Brady!

No chemistry whatsoever, loud, obnoxious does not cut it.
Since Deimos history has been distorted in the worst of ways.
Brady has lost all sense of ethics. With friends like Brady Chloe needs no enemies she is surrounded by vultures! Its been one disgraceful storyline. Corday made one huge error on this one!

Were it not for the Patch man would be turning it off completely. As it is can only watch a couple of times a week now that Nicole Deimos have taken over the stage

Bravo to the Young and the Restless!

Thursday’s episode was excellent!!!!

Kudos to the writers regarding Hillary Devon and Mariah

I did not see this coming !!!

Excellent element of surprise.

I enjoyed the episode ,too! I saw something coming; however, not in that manner.

I stopped watching the Young and the Restless once Justin Hartley left. The show is boring now.I do watch Days though every single day.How does everyone like the new Abby?I think she will be just fine.Does a good job with the panic attacks to sometimes the writers will screw that up.Good job Days and keep up the good work, and wouldn’t that be a kick if Stephano is alive,Again oh brother

Since Days writes so far in advance, I believe that there were plans for Stefano to live through the shooting which should show some scenes with him actually alive . I remember the scenes when Chad was thinking about Stefano and he was shown. Therefore, I believe that there are more scenes that he filmed before his passing since I didn’t believe that he was dead in the first place. The writers will be able to give Stefano a death scene to some how include Andre and Chad, and Theo ; Theo needs to see Stefano in a better light because he truly loved Stefano and he loved Theo.
It will be great for them to determine another way to write Joseph out of the show which will allow his children to know that he loved them and had each in his thoughts and heart during his illness and at his death.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Marlena Looks Back at 50 Years in Salem

The June 22 episode of Days of Our Lives reminded us all of why Deidre Hall is iconic in the role of Dr. Marlena Evans. Here we are 50 years later, and Marlena is still the heroine of the long-running soap opera, and Deidre remains one of the most most recognizable names in the history of soaps.

To pay tribute, and to look back at the life and times of Marlena, the story starts with Marlena flipping through a photo album of her with John (the late Drake Hogestyn) over the years. As she misses him dearly, she gets a knock on the door and its none other than John’s son, Paul Narita (Christopher Sean).

With Andrew (Colton Little) in Salem working on a case, he sits down with Marlena, who says she can’t believe its been fifty years since she first arrived in Salem! Cue: Deidre’s first scenes on DAYS when she finds Mickey Horton (the late John Clarke) playing chess against himself inside the mental institution she worked.

THE FLASHBACKS OF MARLENA’S LIFE

From there, viewers definitely got the cliff notes version of the history of Marlena and entrenched within them, some of the biggest moments in Deidre’s enduring run.

Paul thinks he is looking at 70s, and early 80s Marlena while going through her scrapbook, but he is actually looking at her twin, Samantha (Andrea Hall)Cue: when Marlena confronted Samantha about impersonating her, and then later getting a call on her radio show from the Salem Strangler (Jack Coleman as Jake Kostichek) who killed Samantha thinking it was Marlena.

In the present, Belle (Martha Madison) has arrived at this time to meet up with Paul, unaware of this trip down memory lane. She wants to go over the findings in the chess board mystery Stefano willed to Marlena and John, in private with him, since Marlena previously said she wanted nothing to do with it.

Back to the history lesson, Marlena speaks highly of Don Craig and even though their marriage didn’t work out, she could find a path forward with the new love her life, Roman Brady. (Wayne Northrop however is never shown, possibly to keep the story focused on John as Roman for confusion sakes?)

Paul sees a photo of a young Carrie (Christie Clark) in the album and Marlena says she was such a godsend after losing her baby. In fact, Marlena says caring for Carrie prepared her for her having and raising her own twins, Eric and Sami. Cue: The twin visiting Marlena in the hospital.

JOHN AND MARLENA’S LOVE CONQUERED ALL

Then, in a way to get through and incorporate the wild storylines only Marlena could have been in, she tells Belle and Paul, she has been through so much in her life, how lucky she was to find John, and some of the most unbelievable experiences no one could imagine. Cue: Marlena possessed by the devil and levitating from the bed. Next, John confronting Marlena being the Salem Stalker, where she admits she killed Alice Horton, pretends she needs help, then pulls a gun on her beloved John!

The comment is made by Paul and Marlena, that she literally has been to hell and back and she could not have survived were it not for her beloved John. Cue the big emotional highpoint clips; The Pier Scene! Marlena steps out of the fog when John sees her from a distance. After believing she was dead for four years, here she was before him in one of the greatest reunions in a soap opera love story in history. What followed were other times of the life of times of Jarlena.

MARLENA’S ‘GIFT’ FROM STEFANO HAS A NEW CLUE

When Marlena makes a brief exit to the other room, Belle fills in Paul on the chess set Stefano left her mother and the photo of the Lire. Paul said he will investigate. Marlena comes back into the room and overhears, and says to promise her if things get dangerous he will back off, she does not want anyone hurt by Stefano’s games.

As the episode comes to a conclusion, it’s just Belle and Marlena going through the photo album giggling about 70s hairstyles and all the memories. Belle speaks on the impact Marlena has had in everyone’s lives, and that she is both the heart of their family and the heart of Salem.

An end card comes up acknowledging Deidre Hall’s 50th anniversary as Marlena, and we fade to black.

So, what did you think of Marlena’s walk down memory lane? Were you happy to see the flashback clips utilized throughout? Were you touched by the scenes and the performance of Deidre Hall? Let us know what you thought of Deidre’s 50th anniversary episode via the comment section below.

Deidre Hall Marks 50 Years as ‘Days of Our Lives’ Dr. Marlena Evans

If you have ever tuned-in to the soap opera genre over the last 50 years, and witnessed some of the greatest romances, drama, classic and outlandish storylines of all-time, you would have seen Deidre Hall smack dab in the middle of it as longtime Salem heroine, Dr. Marlena Evans.

It was 50 years on this date, June 21, 1976 that Hall first appeared on DAYS on NBC which was its home for 57 years before it moved to its current streaming platform on Peacock in September of 2022.

In Hall’s first episode she was introduced as a psychiatrist treating Mickey Horton (John Clarke) at Bayview Sanitarium after he suffered a complete mental breakdown. Mickey learned that his brother Bill Horton (Edward Mallory) was the biological son of Mike Horton (Wesley Eure) with his wife Laura (Susan Flannery) and that he had been lied to for years and years. From that moment on, the rest is television and soap opera history. Days of Our Lives put Hall front and center.

There were so many heartbreaking and shocking story twists involving the beloved Marlena. One of the first was the historic crib death of baby DJ (Don Jr.) in 1980, Marlena’s infant son with Don Craig (Jed Allan). The story had never been told on daytime television and Hall’s performances received accolades from TV critics to fans when Deidre received thousands of letters from grieving mothers who had gone through the same thing in their own lives.

DAYS also brought Deidre’s twin sister, Andrea Hall Lovell to the show as her on-screen sister Samantha, who had a grudge and even locked Marlena up in a sanitarium and took her place! Fast-forward and in 1982, DAYS launched the Salem Strangler story where everyone believed Marlena was his next victim, only it turned out to be Samatha. Jake Kositchek (played by Jack Coleman) was revealed to be the actual serial killer.

Later, Deidre would assume the role of Marlena’s look-alike, Hattie Adams in 2004, once played by her sister, Andrea. Over the years, Hattie has come back to Salem and caused trouble giving Hall a chance to play a different type of character, then the always upstanding Marlena.

THE LOVES OF MARLENA

Deidre Hall struck gold with all her leading men: from the late Jed Allan, to Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady, and of course, her enduring love story with the late John Black played by the iconic Drake Hogestyn. In fact, Marlena’s 1986 wedding to John (who was believed to be Roman at the time) remains a favorite of fans to this day.

TOP MARLENA STORYLINES OF ALL-TIME

While the list is long, here are several that were some of the memorable during Deidre’s five decades in Salem!

The Possession (1994- 1995)
Considered one of the most ambiguous, outlandish and unforgettable story arcs in soap opera history, then Days of Our Lives head writer, James Reilly went there! Marlena was possessed by the devil! That included; the demonic eyes, hissing at father John (Black) the priest, morphing into creatures, and the classic levitating in her bed! It became a cultural phenomenon and cemented Deidre Hall’s status as a daytime television legend. Just ask Ryan Gosling!

The Affair with John Black (1993)
John and Marlena’s forbidden love could not be denied and they had passionate affair, while she was still married to the real Roman. Problem was her daughter, Sami (Alison Sweeney) caught her mother having sex with John on a desk that changed Sami forever.

The Salem Stalker Mystery (2003-2004)
In a shocker, Marlena was revealed to be a serial killer who bumped off several Salem favorites residents who were all alive on the island of Melaswen (spelled “New Salem” backward). Turns out, she was manipulated and gaslighted by Andre DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) to do the “killings” and had no memory of her actions.

The Pier Scene (1991)
This remains Michael Fairman TV’s all-time favorite Deidre Hall moment, which featured some of the best acting in the storied careers of both Hall and Drake Hogestyn.

In the story, a presumed-dead Marlena returns after four years. One foggy night on the pier, John is alone, and Marlena steps out of the fog to reveal herself, and is reunited with the love of her life. You can watch it any year, any decade, and in any moment, and it will have you reaching for the hankies again and again. (best music score fo a soap scene of all-time too!)

Kristen’s Secret Room Reveal (1997)
Marlena was caught in Kristen Blake’s (Eileen Davidson) elaborate web of lies, when she was held hostage in a secret wine cellar/room until John managed to track her down, leading to an iconic on-screen reunion. The classic catfight between Hall and Eileen Davidson was one for the ages.

It should be noted that Maison Blanche, Queen of the Night, Possession, Aremid and Lady in a Cage were all a part of classic DAYS storyline and all featured Hall at the epicenter of it from 1993-1996.

THE RECENT YEARS OF MARLENA

In recent years, DAYS brought back the possession 2.0 storyline under then head writer Ron Carlivati in 2021 where the devil leapt back in Marlena after taking advantage of a frail Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes)

In 2025, viewers watched the end of the love story of John and Marlena, as John succumbed to injuries sustained in an explosion saving a vial of medication needed to bring Bo (Peter Reckell) back to life. Marlena has been a widow on-screen since June of 2025 as Hall as portrayed the good doctor struggling with her grief and to move on with her life since his death.

One story that never goes away is Stefano DiMera’s (the late Joe Mascolo) obsession with Marlena, his “Queen of the Night.” Even in death, Stefano is toying with her from the great beyond with the mysterious chess set and the missing “pawn,” that he had gifted John and Marlena in his will. The mystery is currently unfolding on all-new episodes of Days of Our Lives.

Tune-in to Days of our Lives on the Monday, June 22 episode as Marlena looks back at her 50 years in Salem.
