Days Of Our Lives

RATINGS: GH Continues To Perk Up! DAYS Down! Y&R Ep Hits 5 Million Plus Total Viewers!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

The ratings are out for the week of August 31st through September 4th, and there were some interesting developments overall.  First, General Hospital had another good week into the positive.  GH added the most total viewers for the week more than any other daytime drama with +81,000.

The ABC soap opera was also the only soap to gain in all key womens demographics: 18-49, 18-34, 25-54, although GH still remains at the bottom of the 18-49 category.  NBC’s Days of our Lives performance in the ratings was a bit disappointing given it’s beginning to fire on all cylinders with its returns and reinvigorated storylines.  The soap about to celebrate its 50th anniversary lost the most in the total viewer category with -79,000, and slipped slightly in all the key demos.

Courtesy/NBC

The Young and the Restless had a fantastic performance for their Monday, August 31st episode garnering 5,184,000 total viewers for the broadcast.  The series also gained in total viewers for the ratings week with +59,000.  The show is still outperforming itself from the previous year at this time.

It wasn’t the best of weeks for The Bold and the Beautiful which still remained firmly in second place of the four soaps.  B&B lost the most viewers in the key 18-49 demo and tied an all-time low in the rating share for that category.  View the entire ratings picture courtesy of SON here.

So, what do you think about the recent ratings performances of your favorite soaps?  Which soap do you think will be on the upswing over the next few weeks?  What have you enjoyed seeing on your favorite daytime drama? What do you think is missing? Share your thoughts and theories in the comment section below!

Ratings smatings, I dont get it! Ron’s episodes are still running and GH is up and Days is getting better but rating are down! THEN we get Y&R with a 5.0? You look at 8-31-2015 to 9-4-2015, NOTHING happened! Jack gave Ashley Jabot, Hillary and Devon with the terrible Neil turns heal story and Sage and Nick. SNORE! The ONLY thing that was good was when Adam was at Newman hacking away and Ian appeared! I take these rating numbers with a grain of salt!

Really!! Who’s watching this mess? Not me!! It’s so stupid I just can’t watch this mess anymore. I’ve been watching since it started. I was 11 years old. I don’t recognize the older characters and couldn’t care less about the younger ones.

I agree – don’t watch anymore. Just same old same old always repeating story lines and I guess the writers can’t think of new ones. It is sooo stupid now. I’m into 3 weeks of not watching but reading comments about it seems Sage is still rubbing her belly how stupid and sicking. Glad I quit.

Right, Timm. I am scratching my head over Y&R as well. It’s been pretty terrible lately. I am starting to lose interest in creepy Neil holding Hilary captive and acting like an all around creepy crawler just as I am losing interest in Sharon eye balling Sage’s baby bump while placing a vacancy sign on her own stomach

Neil is KING CREEPY but I guess this is written for him to have fun and for us to be entertained? REALLY? I would just cut her completely out of my life and just keep Devon at a great distance! Just like Sharon, the easy thing is to tell Dullen the truth. He is a good guy. Try again to get pregnant and make a pot of coffee! No they have to make Sharon BAT crazy, as usual! Speaking of coffee, Harry, I love that Dullen hired Ester. I like the actress and she is a staple on the show… Read more »

Well it is disturbing that in 2015 we have people watching a soap especially Y&R that is so disrespectful of women : we have the Sharon character once again a nut job probably going to steal a baby to make Dylan happy. What? We have Phyllis who must have had a complete lobotomy while she was in a coma raped for months by an imposter and go ho hum an I think I saw a picture of her in a paisley top in the woods meeting up with Ian. Then we have Chelsea who if I correctly every week upset… Read more »

Mishael Morgan (Hilary) is on maternity leave. So, this is what the writers come up with as a way out? If you noticed, Hilary is shrouded in tulle and sheer paneling around her makeshift bed. Obviously it’s not the real actress. It is so hard to watch….just like Jack and Phyllis. I can’t take these two anymore. I don’t get the point…..is Ian going to use Phyllis somehow? Is he a physical threat to her? I must say, Harry….Ian really is amusing. He stole the scene with his sing-song…”Chelsea 2.0-oooo, you are my puppet show-oooo.” Cute and sardonically hilarious. So GH’s ratings are up for two weeks in a row and it’s with material from ousted headwriter Ron Carlivati?

Hmmmmmmmmm…maybe that ratings decline was a whole lot more about viewer burnout with Tony Geary and his exit and less to do with Ron’s writing.

Matilda

Matilda

GH ratings are up? Decline not about Ron and Geary burnout? The ratings are awful. The numbers, 430K key demo, 2.6 million total, are what got Ron fired then and he would be on the chopping block today with those numbers. The numbers WITH Geary were actually better than this week’s. The ratings completely fell through the bottom after he left, they crept up a bit but are still lower and pitiful. It’s laughable to talk about Ron positively based on these numbers. One, the numbers are the same as what got him fired, they were just even lower for… Read more »

Matilda..
It is Ron’s stories as of now and they very good, Ron is bringing it. and the ratings up.
Jean & Shelly were fired from Y&R for bringing its ratings down lower than ever before. Jean has not rewritten Ron’s work, GH is not yet in her hands, she is in with writers getting to know the cast & crew etc, but not writing Ron’s stuff..
RC is the one to bring GH back up, and he is.
If you believe J&S writing for GH will improve it, not gonna happen..
Jeran and Shelly are the Queens of Snooze ..

Matilda is right–these ratings are not good at all but I understand the need to generate positivity.
Yes, I too suffered from Geary burnout but I would not have suffered Geary burnout had his exit strategy been orchestrated better–the writing was horrible, anti climatic and with no payout being afforded to long time viewers.
I am perplexed as to why the numbers have gone down for Days as it has been on fire these last few weeks.
I am hopeful that the numbers for all four soaps will be significantly higher upon the next ratings report.

Su- You should actually read my post before you respond to it. I said the numbers, 430K demo, 2.6 million total viewers are the same numbers that got Ron fired. The week his firing was announced the ratings were 440K demo and 2.7 million total viewers, so this round of numbers are actually worse than the last set of numbers that got Ron fired. The ratings in terms of Ron’s performance are not up. They are up slightly from a few weeks in August when GH hit bottom and are still at the levels that got him fired. And I… Read more »

Y&R isn’t “climbing” su000 if you look at their demos they have dropped big time in the past two weeks and not one person has said a word about it expect the fact the show has Gained Viewers which it has but Very little and I do mean Little. It doesn’t surprise me that GH is perking up. This show has consistently been knocking it out of the ballpark with the recent story involving Morgan and Sonny Corinthos. The return of Anna Devane is perfect and I am really enjoying watching Michael come around to accepting that his father is still a huge part of his life no matter how hard he tries to ignore it. I love the cast on GH. They are all stellar. DAYS has some interesting stories but I truly detest the whole John/Marlena story, because it is so YAWN inspiring. I don’t give a… Read more »

Mateo, you hit on something here. Mrs C. She was vital to the show. I understand no one could have ever replaced Jeanne BUT the show should be bigger than the character. Y&R suffers without that character. So, they decided the character would die with Jeanne. Okay but you need to keep the family relevant. Jill is too weak and I understand the actress doesnt want to act full time. Jill was always more effective with Kay anyway. What the should have done was bring Tucker back into the fold. GH is still at all time lows in the demo. 433,000 W18-49 is terrible. Because the Silas murder mystery, all Franco all the time show took the ratings to an embarrassing 380,000 in the demo for a couple of weeks, we are talking about GH being the “only” soap with gains? I’m hopeful for DOOL, despite the disappointing numbers. It’s early in their new regime (new HWs), but the show is in fine form. Alot of the newbies are gone. Couples that the audience likes (John and Marlena, Steve and Kayla) are being written for. Veteran soap actors like Galen Gering, Judi Evans, Wally Kurth and Kassie DePaiva are in frontburner storylines. I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying Abby and Chad, who are getting very romantic writing. Hope is a key character again. Julie and Doug are seen more frequently. That’s how I feel, word needs to get out that DAYS is writing for its vets again. They have the makings of some good soapy romance with Chad&Abby, and there’s still hope for Eric&Nicole! Especially if they start working together. DAYS is back on track. They need to show more flashbacks of the Supercouples. They need to show us why we should care about Justin&Adrienne, Patch&Kayla, Bo&Hope, John&Marlena, Julie&Doug. Just from an aesthetics viewpoint, Days seems much brighter and better edited/produced over the last few weeks under the new writers’ regime. The show is starting to get really good. Unfortunately, the numbers aren’t reflecting that, at least not yet. I know it was the Friday before Labor Day weekend, but Days was very close to having under 2 million viewers on that day. Hopefully, things will start to pick up ratings wise as it gets closer to the 50th. The show still has time, but I imagine the renewal/cancellation decision will be made by January at the latest.

It just may be that a soap is not in this day and age able to last 50 yrs. The newest soaps have the best ratings. When a soap ages (and my first soaps were Young Doctor Malone with my grandmother and From These Roots) the typical thing is to start focusing on the younger generation. But that only works for a while…stories get repeated, the younger actors leave or just don’t have the interest and power of the earlier ones. then the stunt s start “big names” for actors, fixing the past by changing storylines or making char “undead”.… Read more »

Never in a million years will networks invest in creating a new daytime drama– these last four are it, and once they are gone do not expect anymore. And these last four are still here only because there is a core audience for each that right now the network couldn’t replace it with anything that will match it. However if the numbers dip low enough, they will in a heartbeat. But in principle I agree with you, no show should run this long, creatively there is only so much you can do to one character then it borders on the… Read more »

I think with the writers’ creativity, they can figure out how to pull us all back in and keep us there. If they write great characters and let the stories spring from those characters and not from outlandish plots and dialogue that they would never do or say, they can make the daytime soaps great again. It really does start with the writing in that regard. Of course, it’s all a team effort, so they’ve got to be excellent in all regards. As I mentioned to someone else here, if they could find the show’s “identity,” maybe by going to… Read more »

I too hope GH goes back to its roots of the past 20/25 years, the mob was somewhat prime.
I want a mob story. there has not been a mob story for years..
some scenes of mob stuff but not a story as once was, an upfront story as in days of yore..
going back to the 80’s is not realistic in the forming and media of this the 21st century..
I miss the once;

Love your comment. I also think it’s a mistake for them to suddenly make Morgan bipolar. His petulant temper tantrums and massive are not all indicative of bipolar disorder. That’s not how manic depressives act and if you cannot address this complex, devastating disorder with respect, sensitivity in an educated manner than I maintain that you do not address it at all. I know many disagree, but I feel Craig doesn’t have the acting prowess to pull this off.

Finally there is a long awaited story for the Chorinthoes family.
They are a core family, the largest family, and the most interesting family.
It is about time they are upfront in a family story..

Maybe the bulk of it is still Ron’s…but I’ve seen Jean Passanante’s name in the credits recently. Do you think that maybe she’s been reworking Ron’s work? I can’t wait to see what the new writers bring in October!

I notice Days got 1.94 on Monday episode and next highighest rates day was Wednesday 38th 1.79. But Friday episode was 1.64. Which means they lost 3 whole ratings points has compared to first of the week.

I’m glad GH’s numbers are going back in the right direction. I’ve enjoyed the show the past few weeks. It was in a bad funk really since before the Nurses Ball, which I thought was by far the worst NB of all time, then they killed off Duke which was a huge mistake and a turn off for many, then Luke’s exit storyline was horrendous. Only now are things finally starting to pick back up. It started with the fall out from the murder of Silas, which I thought provided some excellent drama. And personally, I love the family drama… Read more »

I agree. I see the show shifting in storytelling and better writing, more drama, less stupid stunts (Julian & Alexis Seinfeld skit ripoff) and more emotional conversations. I would be happy if all the Jeromes say bye-bye. I honestly dont think they have brought anything to the show. I think killing of AJ was a mistake and I would like to see Elizabeth vanish. I will be happy then

I, as many others FF through looong boring conversations they are boring and quite tiresome.. Sopas would be very dull/boring if only couples and family.. I like plots that are fast moving not long sappy campy love stories that are doomed from day one to end. Family is in every soap, core families will always have their stories.. I like pace and adventure..as do others 🙂 out of the millions of viewers only 000000000.1 %? lol even read and post on soap sites, our opinions are not all that important in realm of things. people have begging and complaining since… Read more »

@Dan — I agree with you about the family drama — and about this past week being the best in a long time. I’d been staying away from this soap (and it had been my favorite!) but would tune in from time to time over the last year or so, and always was so disappointed at how they had ruined “my” soap. Ha! 😉 I lost interest. But then heard about the new writers and them bringing back the original Sloane. Yep, best week in a long time! One thing that I think is important with a soap is to… Read more »

Regarding Days, glad they are bringing back vets, and hopefully, improve the writing with romance, relationship building, and new and improved storylines-like the idea of Nicole wanting to buy and run a business, but not happy right now with the murders- do not want to watch that. Who needs to see a young girl (Paige) dead on the floor, so not watching much now (maybe this is why ratings are down), but looking forward to Days getting past the murders and on to better storylines. If that happens, glad to watch and hopefully, ratings will go up. Not one for… Read more »

Maybe GH ratings are up because Sonny lying comatose in a hospital bed is more exciting than Sonny mumbling his lines.

I am really waiting for something interesting, exciting, and even revealing to happen on this show. There are too many storylines that have grown stagnant because they haven’t been allowed to move forward. Love in the afternoon is all well and good IF there is actual forward movement on the storyline. I got bored long ago with constant reminders in the form of repetition of information. Really, writers? We aren’t dunces, you know.

I don’t even recognize Y & R anymore. Sharon is the new Sheila? Another pitiful, crazy, baby stealing character. Yawn. The angry and cynical millennial brat Mariah acting as the voice of conscience and reason for Sharon? Doesn’t make sense. How it remains the #1 soap is beyond me. Days and GH have been fantastic.

Sam, I completely agree with your thoughts on Robb Derringer as Sloane.above. Although I have continued to mostly listen to GH since in left in January, I have never been so excited to watch GH again, as I am when he is on. He brings pure emotion to each and every scene, such a breath of fresh air. Since the recast at the beginning of the year he has done a lot of guest roles, which I am extremely happy about. I hope GH decides to keep him around for awhile, therefore I won’t become completely bored watching GH again.

Hi, Layla! Well, he hasn’t been back on for a week yet, and just from spoilers, it doesn’t look like he’ll appear this week either (hope I’m wrong!). It’s ridiculous how story threads (not just that one) are just dropped for a week or more at a time and not woven in more with the other stories. To me, that’s bad storytelling. If they want to keep their audience, I hope they do a better job at this — and that’s why I’m so interested to see what the new writers bring to the table in October. Back to Sloane,… Read more »

Sloane will be back on the week of September 28th. I don’t know how many episodes that week but he will be back during that time. I hope that the new writers learn that they can’t run characters and than not show them for almost a month. The big storyline right now being who shot Sonny, but half the viewers don’t even care anymore. I am glad they didn’t have him hanging on for a year. When is Jason going to get his memory back??? This is been going on too long . Don’t want Elizabeth to marry Jake(Jason). Sam still loves Jason and deserve to be together. Liz is very selfish! And very uncaring towards Sam & her son , to rob Sam of her husband and her son of his dad.

Days Of Our Lives

Kevin Spirtas Talks ‘After Forever’s’ Digital Special ‘Riley’s Unforgettable School Project’, The Loss of Michael Slade, and a Chance to Reprise DAYS Craig Wesley

The coronavirus pandemic has put to the test many content creators on just how they would keep their projects moving forward in ways they never dreamed of. However, out of that situation has come some of the most compelling, unique series, specials, and features currently streaming for viewers. One of which is Riley’s Unforgettable School Project, brought to you by the team from the six-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning series, After Forever.

Former Days of our Lives star, Kevin Spirtas (Ex-Craig Wesley) has starred in and created the first two seasons of what has become the most honored Emmy-awarded LGBTQ-themed drama series on any platform.  Along with his ‘After Forever’ writing/producing partner, the late Michael Slade (DAYS, OLTL, Passions, Another World), the two also conceptualized and delivered this latest documentary-style offering now on Amazon Prime Video.

What makes Riley’s Unforgettable School Project so noteworthy is not just how they were able to execute the series based on fictional 11-year-old Riley’s virtual school project and utilize its cast, which includes: Spirtas, Cady Huffman, Jamison Stern, Lenny Wolpe, Erin Cherry, Anita Gillette, Christopher J. Hanke, and Finn Douglas, but that it was made while Slade was succumbing to his battle with cancer, and that this special marks the final script from this talented writer.

Michael Fairman TV spoke with Spirtas about making the special during Covid-19, how the death of Michael Slade has made a lasting impact on his life, what After Forever has personally meant to him, and how an official third season is still in the works, and … if he would consider a return to Salem and Days of our Lives, should they come a-calling.  Here’s what Kevin had to say about it all.

Photo: AfterForever

I think the entire story of this digital special has become even more meaningful with Michael Slade’s passing. What was the genesis of the concept? You wanted to continue the telling of the story of After Forever … but we are all in the middle of a pandemic?

KEVIN:  Yes and… when we filmed season 2, we had the scripts for season 3 already completed. It was our hope and desire to film them at the same time, back-to-back, so that we would have had all of our cast and crew together, and we could have gotten through it because we’ve always imagined this story being told in a trilogy so to speak – a beginning, middle, and end to Brian (Spirtas) and Jason, (Mitchell Anderson) and Brian’s healing or his steps towards healing through grief.  Schedules turned out that they couldn’t really work out for us to hold all the people and hold all of the sets for that amount of time.  So, we thought, “We’ve got the scripts for season 3 ready.  We’ll come back to it in the following year,” and that was always the intention, and then the pandemic hit.  So, it was shut down immediately that we weren’t going to do anything, but we wanted to stay current, and instead of going back in and telling the third installment of After Forever as a Covid-19 story as well, Michael and I sat down and looked at a way of staying relevant and current with a story within COVID, and there was born the idea to do this documentary style story/special about the characters of After Forever told through the lens of the character of Riley, the 11-year-old boy, who is now being homeschooled during the pandemic. He gets an assignment to do a project about the most unforgettable person he has ever met, and he, of course, chooses his best friend, the late Jason Adams, and he enlists all of Jason’s friends and family to join in.  Michael actually said, “What if we tell a story about Riley being homeschooled?” And, not only is Riley a technical genius at 11-years-old in the story, but Finn Douglas, who plays Riley, is a technical genius.

And didn’t Finn perform and write the song “Forever There” contained within the special?

KEVIN. Yes. He is this incredible musician.  Michael thought, “What would it be like if we asked to have the character of Finn sing a song for Jason?”  I said, “Well, what kind of song would we have him sing?”  Finn could play anything, I’m sure, because he’s self-taught, he plays by ear – guitar, piano, and drums.  Michael said, “What if we ask him to see if he could write a song?” and when we heard this song, we all called each other and we all got on Zoom and went, “Can you believe this song?  Can you believe this came out of this 11-year-old?”  It’s pretty incredible.  Michael did a gorgeous job of weaving the stories in and out and how they just sort of dove-tailed into each other, and then it was framed by Riley opening the project and ending the project.  During the Zoom reading we wanted to hear the song out loud.  We said to Finn, “Would you want to sing the song?”  We all just watched everybody on that Zoom call just fall apart.  It was just so beautiful. He’s an amazing talent.

Where is your character within this?

KEVIN:  I still stand in the center of the story of Jason because my character, Brian, was married to Jason, and it sort of connects us all, and through Riley’s understanding of how we all connect to Jason, is how we are all sort of spread out throughout the story.  Michael jokingly said, “You know, you’re not going to be the star of this special,” and I said, “I don’t think it’s about being the star.  It’s really about the storytelling.”  The beauty of Riley’s Unforgettable School Project is that we get to see moments of each person’s relationship with Jason, which Riley sets out to say, “Answer these three questions: What did you like most about Jason?  What did you like least about Jason? And what’s your favorite memory?”  Those three things, cut back and forth is where we all kind of fit in.  Nobody has more of a story than the next person, and it’s all telling honest portrayals of how they’re dealing with their loss of their good friend, or their child, or partner.

It’s a very inventive idea during Covid-19 to continue it in a way where you weren’t having to go shoot a full season of episodes.

KEVIN:  Well, we couldn’t. I have to say, Allison Vanore, who not only produced this special, but she also stepped up saying, “I’d love to direct this,” and I said, “Yes, please!”  She knows the characters.  She understands the story because she’s been a part of it for the last two seasons.  Allison also has this extraordinary amount of knowledge and expertise with the camera and what was needed for a remote shoot, and to also be able to organize filming 13 people in 2 different countries and 5 different cities… that’s just the technical side of it, but having that in our back pocket, knowing that it was a remote shoot, we had to send the camera, the computer, the ring light, and the microphone to each person’s house.  We had to location scout over Zoom.  We had to do wardrobe over Zoom.  It was all this big puzzle putting it together, and once you look at that board of storytelling and how we were going to do it, it kind of fell into place.  I feel blessed that a) we still had Michael with us, at that point, and b) Allison had the know-how to do this.  We all feel that at least this pandemic didn’t keep us from doing what we love.

Photo: AfterForever

In terms of the contribution of Michael Slade in this special, was it the construction of the story, and how was he able to work and write this during his illness?

KEVIN:  Michael’s contribution to the special was no less than the contribution to season 1 and season 2, and the future of season 3, because the scripts are written.  We did everything on Zoom, and we worked around his schedule of treatment.  We scheduled 2 people per day, and we spread them out over two weeks.  He was very present, and when there would be a day where he would say, “I’m going to be an hour late, let’s just push that call time,” I would ask, “Is this too much right now?  We can shelve it; we can stop it.” He’d then say, “Absolutely not, otherwise cancer will win.”  He was determined to stay focused and to stay active because it took his mind off of what was happening to him.

Photo: AfterForever

It would be lovely moment if you both were to win a Daytime Emmy for this project.

KEVIN:  It’s our last collaboration together as a team, as I said, season 3 has been scripted, and it is on the calendar to get made.  We are just waiting for the COVID restrictions to lift a little bit and everyone to get vaccinated.  Michael was really hit hard with cancer – to stay healthy was so challenging for him.  Sadly, he didn’t make it to see the final edit of the special, and he died four days before we launched, but he had seen the cuts before that and was very approving of it, and had made some decisions, and offered some suggestions, and if God gives him an Emmy for this, it’s not because he died.  It’s because it’s great work.  It just happens to be that the work that was involved in this particular special was very tricky.  It brought up everything, like life itself to have to deal with.  Here we are dealing with the loss of a colleague, the loss of a friend, someone’s brother, someone’s son, this is life imitating art, imitating art imitating life. I can’t tell you the darkness that I went through just experiencing the need to stay focused on getting everything edited, and everything ready, and everything aligned for a release of this project that we had put into motion.  On top of it, our editor lost his mother just before Michael passed, and Allison’s mom was sick at the time, as well.  It took a lot of heavy deep breaths with Michael’s death, and the pandemic, and the loss has, for me, on a personal level, sent me back to really questioning my spiritual muscle and to help remind me that we have to come out of this better than we went into this.  I had many dark nights of the soul this last year, and December was probably the darkest.  I feel like I’m just kind of coming out of it now with the spring revealing itself.

Photo: AfterForever

It must have been extraordinarily difficult for you to also go to New York during a pandemic and also knowing Michael did not have much time left.

KEVIN:  I will say this: I am grateful that I was able to stay in touch with my heart and my instinct and go out to New York to let that be my remote location.  Yes, maybe there was some risk involved.  I wore my mask; I was Covid-19 negative, and I was determined to be fine.  Once I got to New York, I would visit him very protectively with our masks and our gloves, and I’d sit across the room, and then I’d go back to the house I was at.  It was a gift that I was able to see him at that time.  We had some good talks then about how he was feeling, and I think he was still being optimistic, and then once we got the project in the can there was maybe this psychic letting go. That’s when everything really started to reveal itself as this could be the end.  I did go back to see him when he was in hospice.  I think I was there the last two days that he really was able to really stay coherent.  He would close his eyes and be at peace and quiet for a minute, and he would finish a conversation and sort of close his eyes, not to sleep and not to go away, but I remember watching him going, “Look how peaceful he is,” and then he’d open his eyes and he’d remember that he is in this body that has been given a time limit of life, and he’s on his way out.  I’d watch the fear go back in his eyes.  At one point, he did say, “I’m so scared,” and I just held his hand, and I said, “I’m scared too.  Let’s be scared through this together.”  I don’t know how to navigate grief like that.  We are all going to be in a position at some point where we are going to be on the other side of the hand holding.  The wonderful thing is that we were able to have honest communication about our feelings.  I thanked him for everything that he has done for me and how he believed in my talent and creativity and our partnership.  I will always take that with me.  I waved my finger at him, and I said, “Listen.  Now, we wrote a series about a man talking to his deceased husband.  You’d better talk to me!”  So, we laughed about that.

Photo: AfterForever

You’ve done a lot of things in your career from Broadway to television, and of course, daytime fans know you best as Dr. Craig Wesley on DAYS.  How does the entire After Forever project stack up to you within all that you have done?

KEVIN:  Former DAYS casting director Fran Bascom, sought me out and offered me this 2-day role on Days of Our Lives, and those 2 days turned into 8 years, and unbeknownst to me at the time, the final 3 months of that contract of those 8 years, Michael Slade was brought in to write.  We didn’t cross paths at that point, but years later, when we did cross paths in New York, and then After Forever was born, that was that universal crossing point.  I am most proud of the fact that we were able create something fresh, and real, and personal to ourselves that we didn’t have to cater to any “powers that be” that had their vision and their tinkering, that they thought that it could be better in this way or that way.  Then for After Forever to gain such recognition, within the film festivals, and the Emmys, and then, just after Michael died, we won the GLAAD award for Special Recognition this year.  We don’t even fit into one of their categories!  They found a way to acknowledge this project.  If another Emmy happens again, that might be another one to put up on the shelf for After Forever that would be beautiful, and I couldn’t have done it without Michael.

For the Daytime Emmys this year, what category have you entered Riley’s Unforgettable School Project?

KEVIN:  We are not a series this year, we are a daytime fiction special, and the “Daytime Fiction Special” category is a special class.  It’s anything that’s digital in the construct of less than 40 minutes.  NATAS (National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) is being bombarded with so much content, they’re trying to find ways to put categories together.

Photo: JPI

So, now, when we last saw Days of Lives’ Dr. Craig Wesley, where was he? (Laughs)

KEVIN: (Laughs) He was in a flash from the past or something in the DOOL app’s Last Blast Reunion series. I had a fun time working with Patrika Darbo (Nancy) and Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe), once again.

So, if they were to want Craig to come back to DAYS, would you be all for it?

KEVIN:  Hell yes!

Photo: JPI

Now, what story would you want to be told involving Craig?

KEVIN:  When Craig was first on the canvas in Salem, there was a lot of mustache twirling and a lot of hand wringing.  He was always plotting; most of the time with Nancy.  It was kind of this high drama, evil villain storyline being told, but when the writers created an opportunity for us to be on after those first three months by bringing on Chloe without a father, there was something real about it.  It may have been told under the construct of soap opera storytelling, but there was a reality-based story about, “You have a daughter, and we are just now finding out about it?”  Then, finding a cure to her health was another realistic story, and finding out that Craig was her real father.  Anything that’s reality based is what I’m getting to.  I would welcome any job that brings me back and gives me an opportunity to dive into something real.

Photo: JPI

Would you welcome the opportunity to play a gay character on daytime; in a medium where there are very few represented in storylines?

KEVIN:  I’d have no problem with that.  Do you know anybody who is starting that?  Let’s do it!  (Laughs) First of all, there’s nothing to hide anymore.  There’s nothing to pretend you’re not anymore.  I would think that bringing in a storyline that deals with anything outside the norm that we are used to seeing would be interesting.  How many times can you retell a story?  How many times can you set the same story up with another couple?  So, why not be diverse and have a stylized story being told through the lens of a gay person.

Photo: AfterForever

In closing, so many go through life without acknowledging people who had an impact them.  We don’t give pats on the back, often enough, and especially in Hollywood, where people can be very self-involved.  You have already paid tribute to Michael Slade in our discussion, but what gift from him is your personal takeaway?

KEVIN:  The gift that Michael really gave to me is to remember to be kind to myself and to others, and to acknowledge and salute the person who is in front of us, because we don’t know when we will have, or if we will have, another moment to do that.

Now below, check out the trailer for Riley’s Unforgettable School Project.  Then let us know, what do you think of its concept? Kevin’s thoughts on the passing of his collaborator on the project, Michael Slade? And, do you hope DAYS brings back Dr. Craig Wesley? Share your thoughts via the comment section.
