RATINGS: GH Has Strong Week! B&B Up Too!

General Hospital had the best week of all the four networks daytime dramas for the ratings period of June 18-22nd.  GH has the most gains adding +128,000 viewers and landing in the third place among the soaps with 2,422,000 viewers and is now ahead again of Days of our Lives.  GH was the only soap for the ratings period to increase viewers in the key 18-49 women demo!

The Bold and the Beautiful was the only other show to show gains adding +12,000 viewers and holding strong in second place with 3, 140, 000 viewers.  Of note: B&B and GH also picked up male viewers with men 18 and up, as did DAYS.  As for the number one, The Young and the Restless, they lost another -120,000 viewers and DAYS lost -112,000 viewers.

The week topped off for GH with the ABC series winning the Outstanding Daytime Drama at the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.  Now the key question is, with Good Afternoon America about to launch as its lead-in for the summer on July 9th will it kick-up the numbers further for GH?  And what will it all mean in the long run?   Let us know what you think of GH’s chances to rise further in the ratings? And what you would tell your favorite shows to do, to increase their ratings?   To view the complete ratings courtesy of Soap Opera Network click here!

off topic, the new opening is trash. A 10 year old coulda made it on their home computer. It’s embarrassing for a show 50 years old to be represented with that…i could go on. Anyway, to ratings, yes good week for GH but Monday saved them. If they didn’t hit a 2.0 on Monday they would have been last place again bc they only had 1.7’s the rest of the week. The plots are becoming predictable and many folks online, especially twitter are upset with all the recycled plots from OLTL and I can’t blame them! It’s true.

i like the new opening because it is quick – no more wasting time. That extra time is helping with squeezing in more show and with being able to fit in another quick commercial, which helps pay the soap budget.

a lot of the plots were in place long before the end of OLTL and before they got the OLTL producer and writer. So it was GH writers copying plots seen on OLTL, and actually seen on other soaps too, so not just rehashing OLTL. The actors formerly from OLTL (and that by the way isn’t just these latest ones) are no longer OLTL actors — they are General Hospital actors.

I say anything they can do to bring in more viewers and keep the show, is OK with me!

been watching since the beginning… and you know I remember actors from General Hospital actors showing up on One Life to Live, I didn’t care — it’s just part of the show for however long they’re on. Like Andrew Carpenter’s father Sloan — he was on General Hospital decades ago. Same actors, same characters, different shows, whatever I don’t care, just as long as General Hospital stays on the air.

I don’t think now is the time to complain about your show… if you’re loyal to General Hospital, then you stick by it, no matter what’s going on. If you want to complain about a show and get it cancelled, go complain about GMA afternoon, or The Spew.. as we’ve already killed the Revulsion, thankfully! ha!

Way to go christy, and thank you, thank you, thank you, for your research on the emmys and how many general hospital got at one time. I did say to ann, what other prime time show got more then 5 emmys in one season? Best show, Best actor and actress, same with the supporting and younger stars? I asked her to give me more info and she didn’t get back to me, she said that the prime time shows got more then gh. I also agree with you about the complaining, it isn’t the time and the shows you mentioned above are the ones to complain about, I want my One life to live back and I am so tired of hearing people complain its like they never had new characters show up in port charles before, and why didn’t any of them complain about that miserable character Franco now that was worth complaining about, I believe he was a plant put in the soap to kill it for abc once and for all. And I am also sick of them saying that general hospital is looking like One life to live, Well its not, unless it happens in the future, Isn’t anything even close to how One life to live was. One life to live had heart, and had many wonderful families, General hospital has been a non stop gangster show that killed all the good families they had, I mean why kill Allen, Aj, Emily, Fire lila, Bless her heart.Monica and Edward are hardly ever on, And where is Bobby? Many of us want to know the answer to that question, She was a major player, I liked her relationship with almost every one in Port Charles. And the ratings that are going up are because of those cross overs from one life to live who as you say are now on General hospital. Take away those landview people General hospital will sink like a rock again, And I don’t think that anyone wants that to happen, I think we have gone through enough of the soap killing by abc/disney, I like the music short and sweet to, but hearing 12 seconds I need more time before I can comment. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so Ron and Frank need the time to put our last abc show together. so I will complian about Jasons behavior to Sam and I don’t care for the new Christina, There is no way a kid of mine would take over my home and pull the stunt that she is,He behind would be out the door and I love my kids but they will never blackmail me.Someone said here that When Kristin Storms comes back that we want to keep Jen Lilley, Dye her hair and let her be Kristina, I don’t want to see Jen leave I really like her. Hey thanks again, Christy.

Thanks again Christy.

If you’re a passionate fan of GH like I am, there are gonna be vents every now and then. I ALWAYS stand by the show and will be with this show until the very end. I don’t mind OLTL people on GH. And by the way GH had higher ratings than OLTL for 42 1/2 years out of OLTL’s 43 so I don’t understand why people think OLTL actors are GH’s saving grace. That’s ridiculous. I’ll take as many OLTL actors as you can throw at me, but if you know GH it has never been written consistently in such a cliche, recycled, predictable way since the new regime took over.

Christy,Thanks again, I always forget about wikipedia. They have all the old shows there you can pretty much research anything, Its nice to go back to the good old days of television, all those great shows, Again thanks a lot.

Perhaps you are right. If this continues, GH might end up like OLTL with more than 3 million viewers and surpassing B&B. The predictability and horrors of it all.

I disagree ……… I don’t think GH will end up like OLTL…Ratings are so good they have to keep it up…I think the new regime are doing a good job…By the way not to many men watch the soaps including my husband…It’s a small percentage..I didn’t think men watched or liked the soaps..I thought you guys liked action movies or boxing………….

But it is indeed THE BEST! I will never stop watching it as long as I and/or the show lives!

I’m happy for GH. Now I need a good balance of newer characters and legacy characters. I don’t want a smattering of legacy characters here and there. I want to see them as key characters in storylines. Respect the history of the show. Writers… watch youtube and do your research before you write for a legacy character. Interweave the history of the show with the newer characters and stories. Bring back ALL of the Scorpios PERMANENTLY. Finally, bring back love and romance. GH should be good to go if they manage that! Hope these ideas help…

i am LOVING GH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK FV & RC. The Younger set is AMAZING! & VETS VETS VETS.

For GH don’t wait too long to get Sam and Jason back with their baby. We have waited forever for these two to have a little bit of happiness.
For DOOL”S do whatever needs doing to keep Peter Reckell. Enough said!!!!

Why B&B has anyone watching is beyond me the Liam/Steffy/Hope has been going on too long I quit two months ago watched again one day nothing new. As for GH the one complaint I have is Connie is the real one Kate was made after the rape of Connie so in reality Connie is the Host if you beleive in such things LOL!

I wish that Days of Our Lives would balance out the show a little more. It has been The EJ DiMera Show for too long!
I’d like to see John and Marlena every day, but would settle for more than one or two days a week.

Personally I will not watch “Good Afternoon America”. I vowed to not watch anything during the OLTL time period unless it is a soap. When GH moves to the timeslot in September I will tune in. I have never viewed the “Revolution” and will never view GAA. GH will continue to grow in the ratings on its own.

I want Good Afternoon America to fail even more than The Revolution. If not, it could ultimately become GH’s replacement in the future. Remember, GAA doesn’t need to get good ratings. All it needs is to get ratings like The Chew and it’s bye bye GH.

Boycott GAA.

Heather, that’s what I am going to do, that good afternoon america crap won’t be on in my home, we can’ watch any thing in that 2 o’clock hour until general hospital takes that spot, we have to let abc know we are here and we are going to continue to boycott there network.

Today on GH(MON.) Well if Tray’s father is Joe Jr. Then Kate might be his mom..Since Joe Jr. raped her all those years ago..Don’t you think???? What do you think Barbara t. loves OLTL #1…….Let me know…………Have to make dinner …Talk to you later……

Joe Jr. claims he didn’t rape Kate all those years ago..Who’s lying & who’s telling the truth????????????????????

If only they would listen, I would definitely tell the writers of GH to officially bring Melissa Archer on as Natalie Buchanan.

That’s the main reason I won’t be watching GH anymore….I saw the writing on the wall, when they brought John McBain on….I knew they were going to try and relive the chemistry with Sam’s character, that they had on ‘Port Charles.’ So instead of tuning in and watching this train wreck inevitably happen, I decided to stop watching all together. It makes no sense that after everything that Natalie & John went through, for him to now all of sudden brush off his family and move on to some new chick. I’m disgusted with the storyline, and will not tune in to watch it. I know that they are two completely different shows, but when you incorporate so many characters from a show that still has a strong fan base and expect us to go along with just any story, just because you think we’ll just be happy to see these characters, you are making a big mistake. It becomes hard to see that character in any other way than what you’re used to seeing. They should have just brought him on as a completely different person…at least then we would not have to sit back and watch and character we love, just abandon his family.

Very good insight. It does defeat the purpose of including OLTL characters when the storylines undermine who they were, as the audience understood them for years. This was compounded by the awful events on GH. What was the point of bringing Starr to kill Cole and Hope, of bringing Tea to kill Victor’s baby? I can’t look at John without missing Natalie and Liam too.

That’s my point exactly, David…. Frank Valentini goes on and says keep your fingers crossed for OLTL, but what’s the point? If it were, by some miracle, ever to come back they’ve changed and ruined so many things for the characters of OLTL that it would be hard to just forget and go on and watch blindly without addressing the issues that have occurred, while in Port Charles. I agree with what was the point of bringing on OLTL characters, just so you could kill them off? I get it….you want to pair Starr up with Michael, but was it necessary to kill off Cole & her daughter….not to mention how Hope’s death was quickly and abruptly dealt with. I get that she wasn’t and big part of the GH canvas, but she was a part of a major family on the OLTL canvas and I’m still very unhappy with how her death was handled…..I mean, all the OLTL fans know what Starr, Cole, Blair, Todd & the McBain family (Marcy & Michael) went through when the whole situation of Hope when Starr was going to give her up….Being that she wasn’t a big part of the GH canvas, why briefly bring her on, just to kill her, when you know you won’t be able to spend time focusing on how the loss of both Cole & Hope effects so many people in LLanview?

And don’t get me started with the whole, baby dying/baby switch story….so sick of that!!! It’s overdone in the soap land, and Ron should know better. Then you throw in John Mcbain forgetting all about his family in Llanview and it all becomes a little too much for me to watch. GH & OLTL are too different shows….And what I gather from a large portion of the long-time fans of GH, not all, but quite a few, don’t seem to be too happy or appreciative with the addition of the OLTL characters onto the GH canvas….so, why do I want to support a show that I was never that big of a fan of, and a portion of the fans are always complaining about the addition of characters that I love? Especially when those characters are being ruined, just so they can fit the needs of GH…..

No John & Sam……………………………………….NO WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GH needs Melissa Archer. I can’t watch John without Natalie. We waited 12 months for a John/Natalie reunion and only had two days. They are soul mates and belong together. Jolie forever.

ABC needs to let Frank Valentini run promos during primetime. How else are we going to get new viewers or old ones that stopped watching when the show was destroyed by this mob stuff?

How many emmys did general hospital win? 5, I wonder if any of there prime time shows won that many for one show, That alone should make them put promos on during prime time. Your right about the fans, They did leave because of all the mob crap, maybe finding out that most of it is gone they will come back, At a few sights a lot of people said they will come back when they hear that Sonny Corinthous is dead, I would rather he stay alive, just not in the mob any more.

Yes primetime shows have won multiple emmys for one show, many more than five.

Barbara T, he needs to bonk his head and forget … like Jason did and gees, I’d like Jason to get out of the mob too…. they should have hired ugly guys to be mobsters! tehehehe

Does he in real life go to a tanning salon (Sonny)???????????????????He looked even darker today on GH (MON) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Or is it his natural complexion???????????????

Im a huge Sonny fan..and although I agree that the mob stuff has become to great of a story…people were turning away way before that. I stopped watching because somewhere along the line GH lost its roots. The stories in general became pathetic..predictable..and just down right corny (i.e..text message killer??? Seriously?). You cant write a soap the same way you do a sitcom where something happens in one episode and its all forgotten about the next lol. Soaps have a long history…and people remember this history. So when that history is disrespected…your going to turn people away. I can quote something Sonny said from an episode in 97′ as if that show aired yesterday…so you can feed me some bs now an expect me to just accept it. Also what happened to the Q’s? That was the foundation. Theres no more families…just a bunch of individuals running around like chickens ! GH needs to get back to basics

I’m happy that the rating are going up for GH but I feel it’s turning into OLTL. Pretty much know the story lines. Maybe switch it up some, Star, Michael….obvious…. Try something different for a change. This mob princess is getting old too.

Don’t like the mob princess story…She’s a SPOILED BRAT & DISRESTPECTFUL! No Class………………….

Yes, Sonny did look at bit darker then he usually is, I thought it was my tv, Maybe he had to much makeup on. Fv/Rc are our guys from one life to live Frank Velenti and Ron Carlivati he is the head writer, those two are making improvements on General hospital. I don’t like the nu-Kristina either her attitude gets worse every day, I tried to like her, I just can’t, sometimes it’s best if they get rid of someone that the fans don’t like, in this case if I was in charge she would be out the door, and that camera guy wouldn’t be far behind.

She has to go, I don’t like her at all.

She’s one character we can do without..I don’t think she would be missed….She is no major character or major part….

Has nothing to do with this….This for Barbara t. Loves OLTL #1…. I thought this would be something you would be interested in and here it is: last night my husband and I watched this old Sci-fi movie from 1954 (THEM!) And guess who had i bit part in it???? He played a cop and it was Dr. Hardy !!!!!!!!!!! He was a bit younger verision from GH…..I have seen this movie quite a few times and never noticed it before…………..

Mob princess is a snot noise…………………And needs to go….

Susan m, david is just kidding, he knows the one life to live crossovers are not ruining general hospital. the post below. june 30th 2012 10:22 pm. the mob princess should go, Do you know what I would like to do to that kids camera?

.A small note concerning Y&R you let Doug Davidson who plays Paul give him story and he runs with it the guy is so overlooked a great job and a great shout out also to Peter Porte who played his son Ricky. MAB if you guys would write for these veterans they will deliver and you will get viewers back Friday’s episode left chills up my back!! In the words of Michelle Stafford Doug Davidson was F/Amazing!!!

I so agree! Friday’s show was INCREDIBLE! What a terrific surprise. Not the usual boring stuff. Yes, I too agree, Doug Davidson was F/Amazing! He needs to submit that show for next years’ Emmys.

…and while the Nielsen numbers for “Y & R” continue to drop, Maria Arena Bell is STILL running the show into the ground with her ludicrous & lame ‘stories’…

I think FV and RC are doing an amazing job; so are all the actors and actresses! Good, bold stories, written well and acted well will always keep people tuing in. Mix the vets with the newbies and balance them out with historic care. Screw the network suits and fight for the integrity. If shows were written, produced and acted as if they only had a few months to live all the time, everyone would constantly be excited to watch.

Damn those OLTL characters and FV/RC. They are ruining GH. The ratings are going to sink. Oops, I don’t know what I am talking about.

Yes you do.

What does FV/RC mean???????????????????? OLTL Characters are not ruining GH…Everyone adds something to the show….And the ratings aren’t going to sink….

OLTL cross overs aren’t going to ruin the ratings….

I will get excited for ratings when they get to a higher household number. 1.8 is still nothing to rave about.

I am curious which abc show did win the most emmys for one show in one season, like best show, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, and younger actor and actress? I tried to look it up and I can’t find it, Figure maybe you would know.

you called me? 🙂 well if you mean 2012 awards, and go by one show, I believe it would be General Hospital – they won 10 awards in total.

if you mean of all time, sweeping the categories, I’ll have to do more research – let me know Barbara T!

Barbara T – if you want to look at all the winners, on a chart, so you can figure out who got the most awards in one year, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Daytime_Emmy_Award_winners

Hey Barbara T – so for primetime emmy award winners, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Primetime_Emmy_Award_winners

this chart goes all the wayyyyback to 1949! Looks like prior to 1954, the best actor/actress was just listed by their name and not a show.

It will bring back a lot of memories of shows you used to watch as a kid – all those shows in the 60s that is! ha!

The chart is a little different from the daytime, as they have 3 Best Show categories – comedy, drama and variety. Then Lead Comedy/Lead Drama actor and Lead Comedy/Lead Drama actress. Some years, no awards were given to some categories, due to this, a show might only be able to get 1 emmy total.

The most emmys for one show might be The Dick Van Dyke Show. The show got best comedy show in ’63, ’64, ’65 and ’66. Dick got best actor in ’64, ’65 and ’66. MTM got best actress in ’64 and ’66.

In 1973, The Waltons got best drama, Richard Thomas – best actor and Michael Learned – best actress. As far as their categories, that is a sweep. In 1978, All in the Family did the sweep too…. I’m sure there’s more… it’s a long, long chart!

DOOL ratings are going to rise again, though.

Victor Kiriakis IS IN LOVE. – Brady’s Spiral. – Kayla has no more Patch!

Victor and Maggie… find their way back! I was pleasantly, touched.. by the adult “love” story… that played out. Who knew Victor could display such telling Love for another? Watching Victor and Maggie declare their love for each other, without histrionics… “they made mistakes”. Kissed and made up. Geez! this twosome.. had me cheering and wanting more of them! Com’n DAYS! Victor Mans up! Good for Maggie. Course, Maggie keeps bringing up her predilection…Penchant… for imbibing… Give Suzanne Rogers a meaty story… traipsing around Salem, the manse, as first lady. with hands flasked. Campy fun.

which brings up… Brady…. is Ian… drugging him? it’s about time… the writers give us Brady… doing something else… then, stuck, glued to the hip of Madison. Relapsing… is good story, that should be shared with the viewers. course, i wonder, if this is the catalyst for Madison, leaving DAYS. I already, posted, that on the last cover of soap digest… that it’s in the rumour mill, that Brady and Nicole, may be “leaving” days… which I really, hope, IS NOT TRUE. imo, no one does, relapse better then Melody Thomas Scott, Nikki, of Y&R.

Kayla, shares with Jennifer and Abe… at the Pub! that, she and Patch are done… Divorcing. which, IMO… if this gives us more Kayla… then, so be it. She deserves, more than, standing behind the bar. Abe shares with kayla and Jenn… “you have kids, you go on.”

Dag! James Reynolds… and, notwithstanding… Renee Jones… was beautiful. Abe, disclosing… “Come Back, don’t leave me”…. A part of me is missing… I’ve lost something, I’ll never get back. The tribute… of Abe and Lexie… was genuine… REAL, and affecting. by no stretch of the imagination… Love between 2 married people.
tidbit, it’s said… that Abe and Kayla, may be a twosome, on the horizon. like i said… if this gives us more kayla… and the interracial story… then, its all good. I still wish, it was Fay… Nicole’s mother.

two, things… i’m not sure of…. Nicole and Daniel… dag! slow down… to put out of your mind… too soon… she’s carrying another mans child. and, i clearly, saw.. that EJ sincerely cares for her… the scene in his office… as Nicole hides the bullet case, with one missing…. and turns it in to salem PD.

the other, is days… teasing is with Carrie and Rafe. i’m more of a believer, than ever.. Rafe, showed Carrie, his heart…

i’m plugging, this one more time: Chandler Massey, Will, wins Emmy!

Chandler so deserved this. I don’t watch GH anymore, but I always thought Tony Geary was excellent.

Days did so well, and continues to with this story. Chandler, Deidre, Freddie, and others, as their characters were clued in have made the story really powerful, and not just a “stunt”. Drake had the best line this week, when he found out, he told Will “You’re gay, you’re out, and I”M proud”. Loved that !

Just saw the episode you mentioned…. Tears.,, scene ends… with Will and grandma Marlena hugging…. he tells her… “I wouldn’t be me without you”.

Beautiful Stuff… John and Marlena… stepping up, for their grandson.

the “jury” is still out… IMO… on what’s going on with EJ and Will…. the power struggle,
intimidation, blackmail, back and forth… however, soaps are soaps. so, who’s besting who, for their advantage… is good story. A chip off the ole block…. Sammi, to Will. (?) the whole town… all of Salem.. finding out that Will is gay… is more than enough… Will’s alibi, for the “murder” of Stefano… he was at a gay bar.

i also, don’t like what is happening to Melanie.. but, since she’s leaving.

Eileen Davidson, is BACK! Kristen… bringing to the forefront… John and Marlena.

anticipated buzz! reposting: Deb.

Looking forward to Eileen’s return. Such a great actress. It will be interesting when it comes out that John is actually Ej’s father. Lol. He really is the only logical choice. Days please don’t ruin this character.

let Stefano being Ej’s father, no need for John in this role, it would be cringe-worthy.

OMG! Deb! the machinations… reverberations… tremors… ok… i’m giddy…

this is serious… upheavel.. to the bliss… honesty… eternal being.. of what John and Marlena are about.

I HOPE YOU”RE RIGHT!

I don’t think the ratings… are an indicator… of how well a show is. at, least from week to week…

have to post… for old time’s sake… Not since, IZZY B’s… passing… Death… John’s beloved.. way back when… Victor Kiriakis daughter… Isabella… Brady’s mother… have we witnessed a sincere passing… Lexie. and, i’ll add… Francis Reed’s.. Mother Horton, Alice.

Days Of Our Lives

INTERVIEW: Jackie Cox Talks On Latest Return to DAYS, An Offer for Dimitri, and Life as a Performer In and Out of Drag

On the Monday, December 4th episode of Peacock’s Days of our Lives, Jackie Cox is back and hell hath no fury like a drag queen scorned! With revenge the order of the day on Leo Stark (Greg Rikaart), Darius Rose (Cox out of drag) arrives in Salem with a plan.

As Dimitri (Peter Porte) is about to turn himself into the authorities to save Leo’s skin, Darius gives Von Leuschner a talking to; letting him know that Leo deserves to rot away in prison, and so, to help Dimitri out of town, Darius has a tempting, and yet outlandish way to do just that!

Cox first appeared on Days of our Lives during the limited-series Beyond Salem in 2021 and then on to the mothership in 2022. The drag artist and Rupaul Drag Race alum took time out from his busy touring schedule of his holiday show, Jackie and Jan’s Jingle Jam (coming to a town near you), to speak with Michael Fairman TV all about his recent return to the long-running soap opera, playing ‘soapy’ versions of Jackie/Darius, and if there’s more story to come.

In addition, Jackie talks on the often misperceptions of the art of drag and drag performers, working with his DAYS co-stars since first appearing on the series including: Rikaart, Porte, Billy Flynn (Chad AKA Belinda Chinashop), and much more. Check out our chat with the incomparable Jackie below.

You get asked back to DAYS, once again. Were you shocked that you got the call to return?

JACKIE: You know, what’s so funny is ever since my appearance on Beyond Salem a couple years ago, the fans kind of picked up on this little connection with me and Leo. Which then, Ron Carlivati (head writer, Days of our Lives) kind of expanded into my storyline last year where I came and broke up Leo’s wedding with Dr. Craig Wesley (Kevin Spirtas). What’s amazing is the DAYS fans now think they have seen me in places in the story that I’m not. Like, I was one of the prime suspects for the murder of Abigail DiMera, or I’m somehow helping Leo with other things. (Laughs) The fans have amazing imaginations of their own. I think Ron and the team picked up on that a little bit and have kind of found different ways to work me back into the storyline, which is so cool. I’m there, even when I’m not. That’s so fun for me.

Photo: JPI

As viewers saw on Monday’s episode, you are not in scenes with Greg Rikaart but Peter Porte. Was that a surprise for you coming back to tape a new episode?

JACKIE:  When they called me to come back, I thought I’d be working with Greg again as I have been very much a part of his storyline. However, it was really fun working with Peter, because we didn’t get to work together much on Beyond Salem, even though we were both there. It was fun to kind of like build a connection to Dimitri, because I think that’s such an interesting character.

Were you ever a fan of Days of our Lives before you were even on it?

JACKIE: I would pop in and out when I was a kid when I was homesick. My mom would let me watch a little bit. So, I remember the Stefano of it all, and Hope, and all of those storylines are still in my ether somewhere from when I was young.  Coming into it now, and to see where the storylines have expanded into even more is great. The world is bigger now than maybe it was in the nineties. So, the fact that you have a drag queen dealing with an immigration problem, and getting back at her ex, I think is so wild to me. I couldn’t imagine that kind of a storyline happening back then, but it’s so cool to see now.

DAYS, at times, had shown a lot of forward-thinking to its audience that I don’t think you’d necessarily see on the other current soaps. The way they’ve had you, and other gay, or sexually-fluid characters or romances, or introduced drag into the storylines – all these things they had implemented along the way to make the soap, in its current form, a little more progressive leaning. They are also not on network TV anymore, but on a streaming platform, which gives this most likely an assist, as well.

JACKIE:  What I love about it is, sometimes people just don’t think that we exist. You know what I mean? Maybe drag queens are something they just heard about and they don’t know what we are. I think what’s great is this character is me in my real life. I am Jackie Cox. I am a drag performer who goes around the country to different places and performs and stuff. So, for that to also be my character, it’s not like, “Why is she a drag queen?” It’s like, “Well, that’s just who she is.” I just happen to be there and I know that the daytime audience is so diverse. I love that they get to just see a little bit of my real life brought into Salem in this way. You can’t deny the fact I am Darius Rose and Jackie Cox.

It looks like Darius had a plan to ‘help’ Dimitri?

JACKIE: I don’t know if I’m as much helping Dimitri as if I have ulterior motives. I’m pretty frustrated with Leo. He is this charmer and he always gets what he wants. But I think at this point, I’ve had it with him and his schemes. He didn’t get that emerald. He didn’t give me the money from the Beyond Salem. He left me for Dr. Craig Wesley and I’m tired of it. I want to get back at him. Now that I find out he has this hot new little boyfriend, I know just how to do it because Dimitri better watch out, because he has not yet dealt with Jackie Cox yet. I have quite the persuasive offer you’ll see during the episode, and in the performances. I do think you see Dimitri really consider me and consider what I have to offer, which is to steal him a way, and help him escape to Canada with me.

We see you as Darius and Jackie in the episode, but there is a reason for that.

JACKIE: Yes! What’s fun for the audience is, I think, is there’s this tease during the episode, which is, “How are we going to get Dimitri out of here?” So, we take a page from the old drag book of tricks, which is walk right out the front door and let them look right at you, because drag is an amazing disguise. I think that Dimitri should have, could have chosen to be a fabulous drag queen and leave with me, and we could run across the Canadian border together and done cabarets in Montreal! (Laughs).

So, this is what Jackie/Darius wants to pull off in the episode?

JACKIE: Oh yeah, and also me, in my real life, (Laughs) I wouldn’t mind doing a cabaret in Montreal. That sounds like a good life to me. I think coming to Dimitri with this offer, which is: “Come with me across the border. Let’s get away from Leo. You haven’t been hurt by him the way I have, but I know you will be.” I think for the Darius side of me, you get to see a little bit of the softer side, in a sense. I really am hurt by Leo and the things that he’s done to me, and had been keeping me from – getting a green card in this fantasy version of my life. I really want to get back at him. What I love about Peter as an actor is, as we were working through this scene, we were able to find all these other levels. I kind of build this little connection through our episode of maybe I’m offering him something that he hasn’t even thought of before, a different kind of life where he’s not this Almanian crook, but maybe he can be a free gay man, maybe drag queen in Canada with me. That’s what’s on the table and the audience sees that. Unfortunately, he doesn’t choose me at the end, but that’s not going to stop me from putting on a fabulous look and walking outta there, anyway.

So then as he leaves, is Darius hurt by all of this?

JACKIE: I’m a little hurt. I don’t think my revenge cup is full at the end of this episode. There’s still a burning little desire for me to get back at Leo by the end of this and maybe a desire for me to just get back into Salem and see if I can find Dimitri again. Let me tell you honey, looking at Peter Porte is not very hard and maybe there’s more men in Salem for me … yet. (Laughs)

Ya never know! What was your takeaway from previously working with Greg Rikaart? Had you known Greg before taping Beyond Salem?

JACKIE: No. Greg and I met right then, and it was so much fun. Right away in those first couple of moments, we decided we needed to up this whole backstory, like just the two of us, and then it ended up on the show: that we were from New York, and we were in cahoots together, and then apparently we got married. and all this kind of subtext we worked in. For Greg and my character on DAYS, it was not about us being hot and heavy with each other. It was more about seeing each other as partners in crime very much from the beginning. So, that’s where the hurt for me comes in. I thought Leo was my main ride or die, but clearly he is not.

Ron Carlivati has a penchant for writing these types of campy stories. Did you speak with him at any point, and talk about the fact that you would like to do more appearances on DAYS?

JACKIE. Ron did just come to my Christmas show in New York a couple weeks ago. We had a little chat. I can’t say much, but I didn’t die at the end of this. So, there’s always room to come back!  There’s always room for more Jackie.

Do you find there’s lot of misconceptions about drag queens and people that perform in drag?  Do you think there’s an underlying misunderstanding of it within our culture?

JACKIE: There are a lot of misconceptions. A great example of it for me was last year when I came to Craig and Leo’s wedding. Once I got out of drag, Craig, wasn’t sure how to address me. I just was very clear with the pronouns I prefer out of drag. That was just something that was a matter-of-fact conversation that could happen between any two people. I think sometimes, everyone is scared of what they don’t know or they don’t understand, or are afraid of having a conversation that they think is going to be really horrible. I think the average person, no matter who you are, no matter what side of the political spectrum you are, no matter what gender or sexual orientation you are, everyone just wants to get along in general and have a decent experience walking around the world. I think if you see people like me and my character who’s a drag queen, who’s younger than for example, Dr. Craig Wesley’s character, having just a quick little conversation and then we move on … it’s not a big ‘falling on the sword’ moment. There’s nothing horrible happening. Drag can be a performance. It doesn’t actually matter who you are. Drag is just an expression, and if you love it, great. And if you don’t, you don’t have to come to my show. It’s okay.

Photo: JPI

What did you think about Belinda Chinashop (Billy Flynn), Sonny Delight (Zach Tinker) and Amanda Bottom (Chandler Massey) in the drag show scenes in Beyond Salem? Did you give the guys any pointers, or were you just stunned at how good they were?

JACKIE: We had just shot my drag stuff with them before, and they were like, “We’re doing this later this week.” I was like, “You guys will be fine. Don’t you worry.” They had amazing makeup artists come in and help them, which was great. I think that’s the biggest part. Billy Flynn told me, it was so fun for him to get to do it. I love that. Next time I come to Salem, I think there needs to be a reason for me to get Belinda Chinashop back out of the trunk.

You went to college at UCLA in their theatre department, didn’t you?

JACKIE: Sure did. I went to UCLA with Blake Berris (Everett). Blake and I were in the same theater program together and he booked DAYS I think right after college or while we were in college. It was amazing. He started so young. Now, we’re on this show together! How funny! We were like, “Oh my, God. This is amazing.” Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see Blake when I was there this time this time. Hopefully, the timing works out next time. I don’t think Ron Carlivati even knows that we went to school together.

Were you determined once you left UCLA to become a successful performer? What trajectory were you on at that point?

JACKIE: I went to UCLA and I really focused in on theater because I love theater so much. I didn’t actually really do much film or TV, even though it’s the school of theater, film and television. I loved the theatre. Then, after school I moved to New York because that’s where theater is. I got to New York and I realized that the theater industry was not for me, at least at that time. This was 15 years ago or so. It wasn’t quite as progressive, even in the theater industry, as it is today. I mean, to be on Broadway, you kind of had to be this big strapping hunk back then. I didn’t really find a place for me there. I did find it in New York with drag, and that really unlocked something in me. I kind of started building this career as Jackie Cox. I’ve been doing drag now for 13 years. So, for me to come back around to what I maybe kind of started doing in the first place is very interesting. We will see what happens.

Photo: JPI

Now, would you want to take on more roles as yourself, as Darius?

JACKIE: That’s the thing. These days, writers are actually writing material that really connects to who I am. I really want to play more characters, bringing myself to the role is something that’s important to me. So, whether it’s drag, whether it’s a character, whether it’s incorporating some of my Middle Eastern heritage in there, those are all things that I want to bring to life, whether it’s in or out of drag. It’s all on the table. It’s definitely something where I still want it to have that authenticity, to have that reason where it’s me, the actor, not just someone who hasn’t lived it.

So, if you end up with an expanded role of Days of our Lives, would you take it?

JACKIE: Are you kidding? In a heartbeat! My only question to myself and to the writers out there is, am I still going to be me … or is it revealed that I’m not actually Jackie Cox, and that I’m just some delusional fan who thinks I am? (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

In closing, how is Jackie when she walks out the door after this episode?

JACKIE: Jackie walks out the door with a renewed sense of purpose, a burning desire to eventually get back at Leo, and maybe a new friend in Salem. Those are the things that I walk out that door with, for sure.

Lifetime’s ‘Ladies of the ’80s: A Divas Christmas’ Brings Epic Food Fight and “Slapfest Coup de Grâce”

Get ready for the feuding soap opera divas, when five actresses known for their signature primetime and daytime roles are brought together in Lifetime’s new holiday film, Ladies of the ’80s: A Divas Christmas.

Saturday night, December 2nd on Lifetime (8pm ET/7PM CT) marks the highly-anticipated holiday movie premiere featuring: Donna Mills (ex-Knots Landing), Nicolette Sheridan (ex-Knots Landing), Morgan Fairchild (ex-Falcon Crest et al), Linda Gray (ex-Dallas) and Loni Anderson (ex-WKRP in Cincinnati).

Here’s what we do know! In story, five alums from the long-running soap, The Great Lakes reunite for a live Christmas finale. Uh-oh!  Now take a look at the backstory of the colorful cast of characters (pay special attention to the clever twists on the actresses names!)

Photo: Lifetime

LAUREN EWING (Linda Gray) “Everyone thinks I’m so damn good all the time,” confesses the junk food-loving Lauren of her second act as a lifestyle guru. “I don’t know how Gwenyth Paltrow does it!”

DANA CUNNINGHAM (Donna Mills) Now a sitcom mom, she’s yet to make amends to ex-bestie Juliette after abruptly leaving the soap back in the day. Not that she hasn’t tried: “When I thought the world was going to end in Y2K,” Dana says, “I reached out to her, and she never called me back.”

LILY MARLOWE (Loni Anderson) After replacing Dana on ‘Great Lakes’, Lily never again found a role to win her acclaim. “What do I have to show for (my career)? An arc on  For the People – Shonda Rhimes’ only flop!”

JULIETTE MATHESON (Nicollette Sheridan) “She left me for L.A.,” the party girl turned fashion mogul recalls of Dana’s betrayal. Will their feud derail the entire event?

MARGEAUX ROBERTS (Morgan Fairchild) “Fasten your face-lifts, ladies, it’s gonna be a bumpy weekend!” The sassy grande dame of ‘Great Lakes’ sees the Juliette-Dana beef as the perfect escape from her own domestic drama.

Now, making this all the more hysterical is the director of The Great Lakes reunion special, which makes the five women live under the same roof, is its former child star Alex, who has gotten his ex-girlfriend, Nell to direct the finale. Meanwhile, in the subplot. the ‘Ladies of the ’80s’ come up with a plan to get Alex and Nell back together.

As with any good soap opera, there is a major food fight. Linda Gray shared with USA Today ,”The food fight was one take. And it was fabulous.” And of course, their is a bitch-fest slap-fest. Morgan Fairchild revealed, “Oh honey, we all got ours in. Mine was a simple, ‘How dare you?’ with a slap. But I was hoping for a punch.”

The movie’s EP, Larry Thompson, who is a Hollywood manager and has Donna Mills as a client, said that the entire scene peaks with the”slapfest coup de grâce.” What is that exactly? That is when Donna Mills pushes Nicollette Sheridan into a pool in a nod to Dynasty’s Lily bond battle between Dynasty’s Alexis (Joan Collins) and Krystle (Linda Evans).

In case you missed it previously, check out the trailer for Ladies of the ’80s: A Divas Christmas below, also starring Patrika Darbo, Alec Mapa, Mills real-life daughter, Chloe Mills, and Christopher Atkins with theme song by Tiffany.
