RATINGS: The Revolution continues to fall flat! GH hits new lows … but next ratings should supply boost!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

ABC Daytime did not do well in the ratings for the week of February 13th through February 17th.  Let’s start with the continued poor showing of One Life to Live’s replacement, The Revolution.  Once again the lifestyle/makeover show is falling flat in the ratings and with the daytime audience.

According to TV Media Insight, “For the Live Plus Same Day ratings for the week of Feb. 13, struggling ABC daytime talker The Revolution has not picked up any steam, according to Nielsen, with a mere 1.53 million viewers, with erosion from year-ago occupant One Life to Live of 820,000 viewers and as much as 44 percent in the three surveyed female demos as follows:  One Life to Live – Week of 2/14/11 Viewers: 2.35 million, Women 25-54: 1.2/ 8, Women 18-49: 0.9/ 6, Women 18-34: 0.5/ 4  The Revolution – Week of 2/13/12 Viewers: 1.53 million, Women 25-54: 0.7/ 4, Women 18-49: 0.5/ 3, Women 18-34: 0.3/ 2.   You can see the dreadful comparison, and that is not helping General Hospital!

Courtesy/ABC

With The Revolution now a horrible lead-in to General Hospital, the lone ABC soap is not getting any needed support, as they would have from previous time slot occupant, One Life to Live.   General Hospital also scored record lows in the last ratings period.

According to Soap Opera Network, GH hit a new low of 2, 162,000 viewers for the week of February 13-17,  and also the series hit a new low in the key 18-49 female demo in total viewers.   The next ratings period (out later this week) should provide a ratings boost for GH with the death of Robin, the return of some old favorites, and new head writer, Ron Carlivati’s first scripts hitting the air, plus the first episode of One Life’s Starr Manning.  We shall see if this strategy paid off with the viewers at home!

In other ratings news, Days of our Lives was the only show for the ratings period to gain viewers by adding + 7,000 making their total at 2, 468, 000.  The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful retained the top two spots but did not gain any viewers.

So let us know your thoughts on The Revolution’s continued dismal performance? And, if you think GH can rebound with the new changes that you are beginning to see?

Marc Breeman is known to be a fan of OLTL fan. So I don’t put all my hope about what he says about The Revolution because it may all be wishful thinking. I want to hear from a well-established source such as The New York Times or Deadline Magazine that The Revolution is on its way out for September. As for General Hospital, I’m beginning to be skeptical about its ratings ever improving. People said the ratings would increase with Anna’s return and it turned out to be the exact opposite . Now they are counting on Star’s return to… Read more »

Heather: I started to comment on your post earlier, just to compliment you because U stated a source. ” I want to hear from a well-established source such as The New York Times or Deadline Magazine that The Revolution is on its way out for September. ” It’s nice when people state a matter of fact on here to back up some of their points. It was me who posted about Oprah. I don’t think it is her responsibility to pick up ABC’s discarded soaps. She can if she wants to. But she does not have to if she doesn’t think it’s right for her business. People say that she was condescending in her voice. I disagree. She was assertive because she was dressing a serious matter. But to say that she was “condescending” is ridiculous. Oprah has made so many good things and has changed the life of a lot of people here and abroad (just think about all her charities for Africa). Hey 1loveabcsoaps, nice to see you back.

The “I think you work for The Revolution” has become so old. Only a kindgarden child would say something like this..

I think that Michael should filter trolls, such as Jenna and Lew, from posting on this website because it’s obvious they have nothing to say and their sole propose here is to start up arguments with serious posters such as you, I and barbara t who come on here to make constructive comments.

@barbara t

Yes I saw your post and I commented on it below on Monday.

I’m skeptical about this. But if you’re right, then GH is almost certain to be saved. ABC thinks that Katie Couric is a Godess. So if Couric says that she wants GH as a lead-in, ABC will listen to her, especially with The Revolution’s remarkable poor ratings.

However, don’t forget that Katie Couric’s talk show will be a syndicated program just like Live with Kelly. Meaning that it can air on some non-ABC stations and not have GH as a lead-in.

I never liked Katie Couric, long before she even signed up for her new talk show with ABC. I just can’t stand the way she act as if she knows everything and thinks that she’s superior to anybody.

But if Couric can get ABC to cancel The Revolution and save GH, then I might actually like her.

Where did you heard that? I’m skeptical, but I sure hope that you’re right. If Katie Couric really wants GH as a lead-in for her talk show, that’s almost a given that GH will survive. ABC thinks that Katie Couric is a goodess. So if Couric says that she wants GH, ABC will listen to her.

Barbara, what you say about Katie wanting GH for her lead-in makes sense. She can see what’s going on now. If GH is canceled, fans will avoid her show and she will get no help if The Revolution is the lead-in. Katie may end up saving GH because she needs it as her lead-in. Katie will want The Revolution canceled and GH spared as much as soaps fans because it is in her bests interests. This is the best hope for GH I have heard so far.

GH can definitley rebound but it doesn’t help to have dog dodo as the lead in!!! With The Crap and The Revolting leading into GH it’s no wonder that their ratings are falling no matter what they do!!! General Hospital is the best soap on the air and it’s a shame that ABC/Disney doesn’t appreciate or support it or their viewers!!!!!!!

david

It’s interesting how much GH’s ratings depended on the lead-in of OLTL. The common perception of GH being the stronger soap was wrong. While OLTL emphasized family storylines and an ensemble cast, GH floundered with mob wars and the tedious Sonny and Jason show. But it’s not too late for GH because The Revolution is so awful and the ratings so poor that it makes no sense not to cancel it, unless the bottom line is that it is so inexpensive to produce that it generates more revenue than GH, regardless of ratings. The embarrassingly dismal performance of The Revolution… Read more »

So glad that someone brought this point up…..If GH was the strongest soap on ABC then why is it relying so much on its lead-in show? This should tell them, that maybe….just maybe OLTL was the show you should’ve kept on. With The Revolution being the lead-in, and the strong focus on Sonny/Jason/Carly hour, it’s no wonder why the ratings aren’t higher. Hopefully this will change, and other characters will receive some time in the spotlight…..but this should let ABC know that they were getting a lot of spill over viewers from the OLTL crowd. Wow, Gloria. What a way U pointed that **** out., and you’re right! That’s too much disaster, negativity, and depression in one episode. Another thing is looks like they (the new writer’s ) are trying to hard, with the HIGH Drama! They need to return back to basic’s, plain storytelling with/OUT all the extremes. Helena killing her own daughter was unrealistic! And that daughter is much to young for OLD ASS Helena to have had. No, that was no Happy Friday at all. Nice Post!

You are so right 1Loveabcsoaps….I was screaming at the tv as soon as Helena revealed that she was her daughter……there is no way she could be her child…WAY TOO YOUNG. Would have made more sense for them to cast a woman for Luke to fall in love with, rather than his son. Cause there’s no way that she could have a 20 something year old daughter…..granddaughter yes….daughter, no! Case of throwing a story together to fit a situation of the guy playing’s son….leaving. OLTL was the best of the 3 soaps! They didn’t care what order they cancelled them because they’re all going off! They’ll probably move GH to 2PM for awhile & then get rid of it next year. ABC doesn’t want to bother with any soaps! OLTL had great ratings but it’s already gone. GH has horrible ratings so they leave it on so when they cancel it they can blame the bad ratings!

Daytime Emmys To Remain Virtual For Upcoming 2021 Ceremony

With an uncertain situation of when live events can get back to normal, or as they have been in the past prior to the coronavirus pandemic, The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) announced today that it plans on keeping next year’s Daytime Emmys award show virtual, to allow for the 2022 awards cycle to stay on track.

In fact, all of NATAS’s award ceremonies including: the News and Documentary Emmys, Technology & Engineering Emmys and the Sports Emmys will also remain virtual next year.

The Daytime Emmys became the first major award show to air a virtual presentation that others followed back in late June of this year and aired on CBS.

In a statement, NATAS chairman and CEO Adam Sharp expressed on the organization’s decision:“The current timetables articulated by manufacturers project mass availability of vaccinations for the entire U.S. population by mid-summer 2021, potentially permitting a return to more traditional in-person ceremonies later in the fall. However, we have determined that delaying our 2021 events to possibly allow for a compressed calendar of in-person Emmy ceremonies late in the year would result in unacceptable delays to our awards cycle for 2022. Instead, we have decided to remain “virtual” in the format of our ceremonies for 2021 while relying on a substantially pre-COVID awards calendar. In so doing, we believe we will be best-positioned to return to a full, on-time, traditional schedule of in-person ceremonies in 2022.

The dates currently under consideration for the 48th annual Daytime Emmys which would be via two or three nights of presentations are: a combination of dates from Friday, June 25, Saturday, July 17 and/or Sunday, July 18.

For those entering the competition, the entry deadline is February, 17, 2021 with  the nominations not to come till May or June.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Port Charles Learns a Bomb Caused the Explosion as Lives are Forever Changed

This week’s General Hospital has reminded us all of why we love daytime drama and why GH possesses some of the finest performers in the genre.

Wednesday’s episode featured several emotionally-charged and gut-wrenching moments as loved ones find out the fate of several people in crisis, or have to deliver terrible news in the wake of the bomb explosion at the Floating Rib, which already had taken the lives of Dev (Ashton Arbab) and Dustin (Mark Lawson).

As we begin, Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) has a passed-out Lulu (Emme Rylan) in his arms and brings her to Portia (Brook Kerr), who sends her for tests.  And in true soap opera fashion, just as Lulu was presumably going to tell Dane she still loved him and wanted him back (following Dustin’s death) … he never heard what she had to say.

Laura (Genie Francis) fills in Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) that Dev did not make it, and then Liz decides to tell her son, Cameron (William Lipton) the heartbreaking news while he is recovering from his injuries.  When she does, Cam is overcome and devastated as his mother holds him in her arms.  Meanwhile, Carly (Laura Wright) is filling-in Trina (Sydney Mikayla) and Josslyn (Eden McCoy) about Dev’s untimely death.

Later, with Laura present, Portia tells Lulu’s loved ones that she has a cerebral contusion, and that there is a a traumatic brain injury which has caused swelling on the brain.  Laura and Dante look on devastated.  Portia then says they have already rushed Lulu to urgent surgery.

Julian (William deVry) is with Ava (Maura West) at Wyndemere.  She is attempting to hide him there, while he figures out his next step after planting the bomb.  However, Jason (Steve Burton) shows up looking for Julian now that Sonny found out that a bomb caused the explosion that ravaged the Floating Rib.  From that point on calls are made to ensure Sonny’s family is protected as a mob war is about to go down. Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Jason believe all roads lead back to Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober).

Jason leaves Wyndemere before spotting Julian; leaving a distraught Ava to come down hard on her brother … he has two choices…  leave Port Charles, which she will help him do, or stay, and if he stays, she will not help him or be a part of his life.  While they are discussing his next move, they learn Lulu is now in critical condition from the bomb.  Ava tells Julian in no uncertain terms that everything he has done has come with a cost.  Jason shows up at the Corinthos home where Sam (Kelly Monaco), who is not happy about any of this, finds out along with Carl,y that Jason believes he was the target at the Floating Rib.

As Liz is struggling to hold it together with Franco (Roger Howath) having brain surgery, she speaks with Scott (Kin Shriner), who did not know of his son’s tumor.  She shares with Franco’s dad that Franco is worried he will wake up a very different person.  Liz is told Franco is out of surgery, and is in tears over his hospital bed.  She prays he will be alright and Franco wakes up!

Portia tells Nikolas (Marcus Coloma), Laura, and Dante that Lulu is out of surgery but in a coma, which Kevin (Jon Lindstrom) points out is normal in these situations. Dante goes to sit by Lulu’s bedside and begs her to wake up.

Then, in devastating news for Laura, Lucas (Matt Trudeau) gives her the real 411 on Lulu.  He tells Laura that Lulu’s brain started swelling the minute she hit her head at the Floating Rib, and that her injury got worse the longer she was not checked out.  Laura achingly realizes Lulu was so worried about Dustin that she never was immediately checked out for head trauma.  Lucas lets Laura know that Lulu’s recovery could take a very long time, if she recovers at all.

Heart-tugging performances throughout the stellar episode were given by: Dominic Zamprogna, Genie Francis, William Lipton, Rebecca Herbst, and Maura West in very intense and dramatic scenes.

Ashton Arbab Says Farewell To General Hospital: “It Was Such An Honor To Have Worked Alongside Of Such Talented Actors”

Yesterday, viewers of General Hospitals witnessed that as a result of the bomb explosion at the Floating Rib; it meant the end of the road for a couple of characters.  One of those was Dev, and thus ends Ashton Arbab’s over two-year run in the role.

In key scenes, Dev dies in the ambulance ride to the hospital and thanks Sonny (Maurice Benard) for making him a part of the family and tells Sonny to tell Josslyn (Eden McCoy) that he is sorry.  Will Sonny recall what Dev said and pass that on to Joss? Will anyone figure out Dev’s duplicity in keeping Joss and Cameron (William Burton) apart? Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, Ashton took to Twitter on Tuesday and shared these words of praise and ‘thank you’ for his time on the ABC daytime drama series.

Arbab expressed: “I am forever grateful to Producer Frank Valentini and Mark Teschner (casting director, GH) for this amazing opportunity. It was such an honor to have worked along side of such talented actors and I’m beyond blessed for your friendship. Most of all thank you General Hospital fans.”
