Ryan Paevey On Departing General Hospital: "The Decision To Leave Was Mine"

It’s a five-hankie day and more on General Hospital, as viewers had suspected Detective Nathan West has been written-off the show, thus signaling the departure of Ryan Paevey.
Paevey had played the part for the last four years. During a live #AskGH tweet session with fans this afternoon, Ryan let them know that the decision to exit the long running ABC daytime drama series was his, not a decision by the powers-that-be.
In his tweets, Ryan revealed, “Okay guys, so to get this one out of the way early… for now, yes, Nathan West will be gone. The decision to leave was mine. @valentinifrank and I sat down to talk as gentleman, and while he was disappointed, he gave me a better send-off than I ever could have asked for, and I will always be grateful. Cut the guy some slack, his job is hard, and thankless.”
Later he added about his final scenes on-camera with his co-stars, especially his on-screen lady love, Kirsten Storms (Maxie): “My death. We all cried….it really felt like a goodbye. After four plus years, your relationship with people goes beyond just dialogue on a set.”

Going to miss mr. fine as hell, and it will be sad if the character is killed off , they could’ve recast, take out the hankies I know I’ll be balling.
Just watching when Nathan flatlined…my heart is broken. I wish they just would have put him in a coma, but reading all the spoilers, I guess this is it for his character. So sad. I wish Ryan the best and look forward to seeing more of his work. I love his Hallmark movies. Good luck!

I was sad when I watch GH and see Nathan’s dad shot him but he wasn’t dead at the time but when he died it was sad and especially with Maxi . Tonight at his funeral it was sad like it’s real and after everyone started to cry it makes me cry too like I’m at a real funeral I’m so sorry for Maxi and her unborn child I hope they could find someone to be with her as Nathan when her child is going to born

I cried the day he was shot, I just knew he would pull through . When he died, my heart broke. I cried so hard, it scared me. The day of the funeral, I cried again! He was the best person on the show. I will miss him so much.

I watch GH after I get home from work each day. My sobbing has gotten progressively worse as the week as gone on. The last scene with Maxie & Nathan was so raw and beautiful. You felt as if you were with them. Great acting. I’ll truly miss Ryan. Great acting, seems to be a really great guy to men & women and just to mention the obvious; SO Hot. I know he has to look after his career and needs challenges, so I wish him well, but gads . . . His will truly be a tough act to follow. Bye Ryan. XO

The whole show is getting out of hand. Loosing too many main characters. I am afraid this will be a rating loss. Sure hope they rethink some of the decisions they have made in the last year.

I cried like a baby when Nathan died he should have never left the show that was actually May 1st guy that Maxi had been with for a long time Lulu and Dante Nathan and Maxie Carly and Sonny are my favorite couples it’s sad that Nathan left and he had a baby on the way I hope someday they bring him back like they do most of the characters

Sorry but the show is going down hill. 41 yrs gone. Finally had a great story line, just because the other Jason is back does not make the soap batter. Shame on you writers for killing him off, something else could have been done to leave room for possible new story line or replacement. I’m finished. Thank you for 40 years, but maybe time to put this soap to rest.

Sad to see Nathan die. Hate to see them dragging out the Anna-Henrik-Drew-Jason-Valentin debacle. Glad to see Maxie’s sister comfort her. Touching scenes. With all of the real life police deaths it was truly emotional but nice tribute too see Final Watch Call. God bless our first responders serving and protecting with honor.
I am completely saddened to read and watch this! I love Ryan’s work and his character Nathan West! For me it is about legacy, and having married Frisco and Felicia’s daughter Maxie makes it extremely hard because I like to have family members of P.C.’s most important families in town. Nathan and Maxie were my daytime couple since Robin and Patrick left! I know that GH was Ryan’s first job, he is very talented, and like many actors want to try other things. I just wasn’t expecting it so soon! I have watched in two Hallmark movies and look forward to others. I am disappointed in some fans who have been rude to Ryan on his departure. I personally, do not want a recast and hope that by Ryan’s comment that Nathan is gone for now means he is open to returning!! Good Ryan, you will definitely be missed!
Nicely put. His Hallmark movies are awesome. I expect no less from a talent such as his. Ryan, goodbye, FOR NOW…….best of luck in all future endeavors, but PLEASE, reconsider and come back. Take it from a fan of GH since the beginning (thank you Grandma!!), if anyone can bring characters back to life believably, for the most part (look at Robin and Jason to name two), its Frank Valentini. It took some time to warm up to him and the character Nathan, but over time he won me over and I will miss him on the show. His final scene was very touching– wish him the best–

I’m really sad to see Nathan go. I know nobody can ever replace him but why do that to make (Kristine storms) she doesn’t deserve that at all! Very sad…
It is a good send off, but I hate to see him off the show. The characters are great together. Lots of tissues the next few days. I do wish Ryan the best of luck in his future endeavors and hope to see him in more Hallmark movies, etc.

Ryan Paevey is a good guy. He has grown as an actor most definitely. I know it was his decision to leave but Frank Valentini is not really focused on saving actors such as Ryan. He is too busy trying to build up on his investment with the JM character. I wish Ryan much luck in whatever he does after GH. Watching him leave the show was hard. No he wasn’t a central legacy character but he fit a special place in the canvas of GH. I don’t care for the direction GH has gone in as of late but I still support them. Good luck Ryan.
Ryan’s acting has improved over the past six months. I am going to miss Naxie. I don’t want Nathan to die. Maybe TPTB will put him in a coma for at least a year.
Nathan’s exit today was rather meh. You could see it coming from a mile away with everyone going in to see him and tell him how much they loved him. And jeez — the show couldn’t afford to have Mac and Felicia there for their daughter?
On a side note, no matter how grave Faison’s injuries why weren’t there guards outside his room? Oh yeah, because then Jason couldn’t just walk in. Hey — I think I’m starting to get the hang of this “don’t ask logical questions when you watch GH” thing…

It was a five-hankie day, certainly. An exceptional, emotionally charged episode of General Hospital. Ryan Paevey, to me, comes across as exceptionally kind, genuine, sweet, funny-and such a fine specimen of a man. I read his tweets and watched and cried and wished he were staying and Maxie was leaving. No idea he made jewelry, and he made some really kind statements regarding Frank-perhaps allowing people to see things from another perspective. I was not impressed with Maxie’s performance throughout this tragedy. Kathleen Gati and Michelle Stafford were exceptional. I get really angry with things they do on this show-then an episode like today comes along and knocks it out of the park.
Kathleen Gati never disappoints, Phyllis! She is the most phenomenal and sadly, under-utilized, talent on GH! More Dr. O…..STAT!
Much as I love Ryan, as Nathan, they should not have killed Nathan. Love the character and Ryan has done a wonderful job. But they should have had Nathan go on assignment, go get FBI training, WSB training, witness protection, whatever something instead of his. Then they should have replaced him (as used to be done all the time.( Then when Ryan was ready to come back, he could come back and it would not be a stupid back from the dead storyline.s Actors often decide after having a good role on a soap, that it was the best job they ever had, regardless the character ws wonderful and should not have been killed off. It used to be they routinely replaced actors when they left. I’m sure this was a wonderful send off for Ryan, and I’m glad he’s happy. He seems like a great guy, and boy is he the most handsome guy I’ve seen in years. I can think of only him, the actor who played Robin’s husband, Patrick, and the actor who played McDreamy who are that handsome. But by doing this so he couldn’t come back, or it was lazy writing. or a stupid idea. Between this and what they did to Genie, I’m about done.

I commented on another page Lin that you had wonderful ideas for ways Nathan could’ve been written of for awhile! Why must it be a death? I would have even accepted Nathan trading places with Maxie and him going with Faison to only escape or be rescued later. Ryan loves action things and is always looking for more, so why not give it to him in storylines? I think Ryan wants to explore new avenues, but I just hope that he will return to GH sometime!

I said …this guy is amazing! Then, when you and Maxie fell in love that sealed the deal. Watching you both together, it really felt that you weren’t acting and you were a couple! That’s because your acting is phenomenal!! My heart breaks for Maxie and your baby that will never know their loving, loyal and dedicated Dad. I will be so upset tomorrow along with all your fans and your family on GH! Ryan, I wish you much luck in your future endeavors and I know you will land a part in a movie or movies with your talent. I’m not really torn up about this. Nathan was never one of my favourite characters, and while Ryan’s acting has improved slightly since he first joined GH, he was still very stiff and awkward, and failed to bring the character to life for me.
This entire last year did absolutely no service to the character, with the ridiculous and very annoying Ask Man Landers story. Hopefully this means we won’t see Amy ever again, since she only seems to be on screen whenever Nathan is involved.
And maybe Ryan’s exit will also signal Michelle Stafford’s exit, and they can use the additional money to bring back Genie Francis. Total mistake letting her go, especially when Laura is a legacy character, a daytime icon, and was in the middle of a major story. I hated the about-face they did with Alexis suddenly taking her place.
Great points, Jimmy! You have managed to cover my three least favorite characters on the current GH canvas…all of whom are quite unnecessary and easily dispensible with no genuine attachment to the true roots of Port Charles…Amy has been a complete annoyance whose storyline was beyond ludicrous, Nina has never fit-in anywhere no matter how many efforts to shoehorn her into other people’s business and Alexis is, well, Alexis! To sacrifice Genie’s beloved, top-notch Laura in order to hand this—-at best—— third-rate character an even higher profile than she has ever deserved is an absurdly ridiculous and massively insulting decision.
The Man Landers storyline was bad, but only existed because of Kirsten’s leave of absence. It wrapped up rather quickly once she returned to a full time schedule (and Jean P retired).
First GF and now RP. Still not watching since hearing of GF departure.

This is a very bad idea on General Hospital writers. They need to regroup and rewrite the scripts. At times these writers and producers can come up with some dumb plots. WE ALL LOVE NATHAN WEST, can you somehow resurrect Officer Nathan West??? I know you can, so put on your thinking caps and start thinking of a way.
he was neither near the top echelon… nor – NOR – did he spiral.
He stood among the cast relevant.
WHEN – this stupid show – focus’ on the Corinthos Clan.. Yeah, he chose to leave… he was SUCH a welcome respite.. when the show DID DOLE out the rest of the cast. the rest of the cast is a dream.
I will focus on Frank Valentini agenda to continually feature :
Sonny / Carly / Jason / Sam / Drew / Michael / Nelle /Finn / Franco. JUST 9 actors out of… the cast as a whole… are missed…. we are given the Corinthos clan who are not good actors.. with any depth or meaning…
so yes… Nathan and Ryan meant a great deal. A great deal of zeal zest and meant something.
Nathan – AND – Laura impact the show that much more.. because we see so little of them in comparison
this show is leaking and is severed to a great degree… that , TPTB MUST be DEALT
I too, am tired of the mob and Corinthos family taking up a lot of time in PC. The Corinthos family is not a legacy family. The Quartermaines, Spencers, and Scorpios are. For me personally, Maxie and the Jones family are extension of the Scorpios. I loved Frisco and Felicia in the 80s and was upset they killed Georgie off. GH was Ryan’s first acting job and I think in his mind he was going to pursue other endeavors once his contract was up, but the Ask Man Landers could have pushed him further. It was a ridiculous storyline and I am sure they needed to use Nathan somewhere with Maxie in Seattle. Ryan wants to try some action roles, and I just imagine he would have loved being on GH when adventure was really high!

Guess I’ve been so caught up with school, did not notice things like Maxie’s parents not being there. Just a mention from Bobbie. Yeah, shame on show for not having them there. But the cast looked genuinely sad, I thought they were all vieing for Emmy’s, I can believe their tears may have been for real. It’s hard to say goodbye to a coworker you admire, even when it means better things for the person.
First…I have a total crush on Ryan Paevey. LOL; me and almost anyone who’s ever laid eyes on him. I “fell” for him the same time Maxi did…when he first walked into her apartment a few years ago. As for his acting? I enjoyed him right from the beginning. Though it was somewhat “clipped”yet there was just something genuine (a word I’ve used repeatedly regarding him) that came across the screen to me. There have been other good-looking actors…of course…who isn’t in this industry, but Ryan just really hit a chord with me.
Through the years that clipped delivery smoothed out and his manner, demeanor, warm look, sweet smile just emanated goodness. I know the Man Landers story wasn’t appreciated by many on this site (not sure about the general consensus) but one of the reasons it worked for me was BECAUSE of Ryan. His portrayal of the handsome, humble guy with a heart of gold just made that story incredibly endearing.
I was so disappointed when I heard people say he was leaving; seriously thought they’d put Nathan in an endless coma until/if Ryan wanted to come back. Perhaps they still will? Perhaps he didn’t die and is in a coma? Is it a ruse to keep Nathan out of harm’s way until Faison is truly dead? Still hoping until the definitive word comes in. Even then, if he is really dead, I’d welcome a “soap resurrection” should Ryan ever want to resume the role.

I agree with you Rebecca! Crush at first sight!! I agree with you saying the Ask Man Landers story showed the kindness and genuineness of the character, but I think overall it was just a story to give him because Maxie was gone. No real meat to it. And from all my years watching soaps, the “meat” is what the actors are after. Ryan is looking to challenge himself.
I was hoping the rumors weren’t true. Ryan was quoted as saying, “Nathan West is, yes, gone for now.” The tweet is now unavailable. So I hope and pray that means he is open to a return! Could also mean a possible recast.
I am truly heartbroken, but think this storyline has given Kirsten an opportunity with her acting. Some may not like it, while others think she knocking it out of the park and heading to a possible Emmy nomination.
Nathan is definitely one of the good guys. I was actually hoping he would be in a coma for an indefinite amount of time. Another thought I had was he would trade places with Maxie to save her and the baby and go with Faison. Nathan then could escape or be rescued. The latter would bring some action in.

I have been watching soaps for most of my life. Most of the time I can predict what is going to happen. Example, I guessed who Hendric was about 2 weeks before it was revealed. The departure of Nathan I did not guess however. I am so disappointed. Well here is my pitch that can bring him back from the dead in the future if the powers that be and the actor have a change of heart. The death is faked to fool Phason and keep Nathan safe from him and his jealous brother!! Either Maxi knows or doesn’t for her own safety. I think it’s doable. Soaps have brought characters back from the dead with worse explanations than that. I always joke with my mom whom I watch soaps with that after all these years I can practically write them myself, LOL!!
Well I will cry even though it is only a show. I wish Ryan Paevey well in all his future endeavors. Never say never—-he can be brought back!!!
Now are they going to wind up making Anna Heinric’s mother some how??
Additionally, I hope they do not make Maxi lose the baby. And once Phason is gone, either by death, jail or escape then Frank Valentini can bring back Genie Frances. The exits will free up the money needed to pay her salary. I believe she is gone to free up the money to pay the actor who plays Phason. When he is gone and the departure of Nathan West that will free up the MONEY!!!

That is what I said today Crystal ! As I was crying my eyes out and yelling at the TV … NOOOO Don’t let him die ! Bring him back alive !!! I can’t believe they let him die ! Poor Maxie ! I was also so upset that they brought Jason back only to have Sam stay with Drew ! Jason & Sam loved each other so much, now she’s moved on and doesn’t seem to care how much he is hurting !!! They keep getting ride of the good characters and keep the bad ones like Scotty, Franco ( I am so tired of he and Elizabeth’s story line ( you know it’s not going to last ) They should have gotten ride of the character Amy instead of Laura again !!! ( Amy’s always whining when she talks ! ) There story lines are tiring ! I loved Nathan and Maxie’s she finally gets pregnant and they have him die ! Really ? Can’t they ever let anyone be happy ? !!! I have watching GH since the day it started ( shows my age ! LOL But l’m done ! I wish Ryan the best and look forward to seeing him in more Hallmark movies, but wish he wouldn’t have chosen to leave GH. Poor Maxie ( Kristen )
Wishing him well as he moves on to explore other venues, however, would have been nice to keep the character role open – perhaps just having him disappear for long term rehabilitation in another country would be more acceptable than death by Faison. Hopefully, we will not bring him back to show as another character BUT would be nice if they had to fake his death until Faison and Hendrik is dealt with to keep Maxie safe – BUT I don’t write the scripts— if I did – would have left the opportunity open— just in case – there would have been no harm or foul in doing that.
Ryan Peavy. You are amazing. I am so sad to see you leave. I have watched you since the day you came on the show. Maxie has had it rough for years. She finally has a man she really loves and a baby on the way, and you get killed off. What is up with these writers. I have been watching GH for 50 years. I cried watching the episode today. I wish you well in your future endeavors but they could have just put you in a coma. Go do some movies, then come back and wake up. Lol Good Luck. I will love you forever and see you on the Hallmark Channel.

I will miss him. It took awhile but the character of Nathan grew on me. Ryan has grown as an actor and he sure was nice to look at. Wishing him all the best in his future career endeavors. Today will be a very sad episode. Maxie, Dr. O, and Nina, have all been stand outs.

This soap opera will be very boring without Nathan. He’s my very favorite and plays a vital role. Don’t know how much longer I will continue to watch without him on there. Why didn’t you kill off Fasion instead. Time for him to go bye bye for good.

A classy, and fine actor. I enjoyed Detective Nathan West. His character actually had character. I didn’t care for the pairing of Nathan and Maxie; however, I always liked Nathan, he was a standpoint guy and I think TPTB did a great job with his send-off. Unfortunately, many fans have boycotted the show due to the Genie Francis debacle, “parking lot Pete” (Wes Ramsey) being given a front burner storyline over many vets, and a host of other issues. It’s too bad that the mob continues to run amok in Port Charles, nepotism ranks higher than longevity and legacy, and the viewers are dealt a bloated cast (who can’t act) with boring storylines.
Did anyone else catch this….quote from above….for NOW, Nathan West will be gone….I am focusing on the now part….maybe he will be back….GH does tend to do this with popular characters

I’m very saddened by this. I liked Nathan and Maxie together, the friendship between those two, Dante and Lulu, and his relationship with Dr. O, Nina and Amy. It will definitely leave a hole on the canvas.
Of course, it’s even more jarring because of the debacle with Genie being disrespected.
I am Very Sad to see Ryan leave the show. I wish he hadn’t died right in front of Maxi. I understand he wants to move on to bigger things but he could have left in a way to make it possible for him to return. Maxi hasn’t had the best of luck with men, and now this. Very Sad to see him leave. I Wish Balentine would Disapear, not Nathan. You will be missed!!

After exciting morning for your favorite daytime stars when they were revealed to be nominees for the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards comes tonight 10th annual Daytime Emmy Nominations Special.
Beginning at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT, several of the nominees will talk with Michael Fairman on their reactions to the news they have been nominated for a Daytime Emmy, share what scenes they submitted that landed in the top five or six in their respective performer acting categories and much more.
Scheduled to appear are: Days of our Lives nominees, Tamara Braun (Ava), Eric Martsolf (Brady) and Linsey Godfrey (Sarah), The Young and the Restless nominees: Allison Lanier (Summer), Michelle Stafford (Phyllis), Courtney Hope (Sally), Bryton James (Devon), The Bold and the Beautiful’s John McCook (Eric), General Hospital nominees, Finola Hughes (Anna) and Alley Mills (Heather), and The Bay’s Mike Manning (Caleb).

51st Annual Daytime Emmy Award Nominations: CBS Soaps Score Most, Eric Braeden, Dick Van Dyke, Guy Pearce Receive Nods
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) have officially announced on Friday, the full list of nominees for the 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
While Thursday brought with it four reveals of the nominees in the Outstanding Daytime Drama, Talk Show Host, Lead Actor and Actress categories (as presented by various entertainment news programs), today’s nominations include all the other categories not previously announced.
The Daytime Emmy Awards telecast is set to be presented live on Friday night, June 7, at 8 PM EDT /delayed PT, on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+. This will mark the 18th time that CBS has broadcast the Daytime Emmys.

In addition, The Daytime Creative Arts & Lifestyle Emmy Awards will be presented on Saturday, June 8 at t9 PM ET/6 PM PT and streamed on The Emmys apps and at watch.TheEmmys.tv. The ceremonies will take place at the Westin Bonaventure Los Angeles.
Television icon, Dick Van Dyke has received his first-ever Daytime Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Guest Performer category for his touching portrayal of Timothy Robicheaux on Peacock’s Days of our Lives. The nomination makes Van Dyke the oldest Daytime Emmy nominee in history at 98-years-old. In addition, motion picture and TV star, Guy Pearce, is also nominated as Guest Performer for his longtime role as Mike Young in the reboot of Neighbours.
Speaking of Neighbours, the Australian soap opera also received its first ever Daytime Emmy nomination for Daytime Drama Series now that its a revival can be streamed on Amazon Freevee. In addition, The Young and the Restless iconic, Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) received his first Daytime Emmy nomination in more than 20 years in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category.

In the Daytime Drama series categories, CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless each scored 12 nominations more than any other show. Leading the acting nominations was B&B, who landed 7 performers in the various categories, a first in its 37-year history.
In a statement, Adam Sharp, President & CEO, NATAS expressed, “We are happy to once again honor the creative talent both in front of and behind the camera of America’s favorite Daytime programs. We look forward to celebrating the icons who enliven the days of audiences across the country.”

Brent Stanton, Head of Daytime, NATAS added, “Producing the Daytime Emmys is a labor of love for all of us at NATAS. The huge popularity of these shows continues to be must-see viewing for their fans.” NATAS also revealed that Lifetime Achievement Honorees, Hosts, Presenters, and Silver and Gold Circle honorees will be revealed at a later date.
The Daytime Emmy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in television programming honoring work in a variety of categories, including daytime dramas, talk shows, instructional programming, hosting, culinary, and legal/courtroom programs. In 2021, NATAS and the Television Academy jointly announced plans to realign the Daytime and Primetime Emmy Awards to be organized by content genre, as opposed to program airtime.
The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be produced once again by NATAS and Associated Television International (ATI). Adam Sharp and Lisa Armstrong are executive producers from NATAS, while David McKenzie executive produces from ATI.

51st Daytime Emmys: Outstanding Daytime Drama Series Nominations
On Thursday, the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards revealed nominations in several key categories via four entertainment news programs: Access Hollywood, E! News, Extra and Access Hollywood.
Three of the four announcements were major categories in the field of Daytime Dramas.
The nominees in the Outstanding Daytime Drama Series category are: The Bay, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives, General Hospital, Neighbours and The Young and the Restless.

General Hospital won this category last year, and has the most all-time wins for a series in this category. For the first time, the beloved Australian-based soap opera, Neighbours is now eligible for competition due to its reboot which streams on Amazon Freevee.

The 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be handed out in ceremonies in Los Angeles and broadcast live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ on Friday night, June 7th.
Previous categories announced tonight via the entertainment news outlet included: Lead Actor and Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
