Save DALLAS Campaign Gains Momentum! Patrick Duffy and EP Cynthia Cidre Want The Ewings To Live On!

Courtesy/TNT

Ever since TNT decided to put the kibosh on the reboot of Dallas, fans of the series have been heartsick as well as the cast, that after three seasons and the bombshell cliffhangers, the cable network decided to end its run.

Fans immediately have been encouraging others to sign the #SaveDallas petition where as of right now over 71,700 fans have joined in the fight!

The site Ultimate Dallas also received a response from Dallas EP Cynthia Cidre who shared this with the many fans of the soap opera: ” I am heartbroken over the TNT decision to cancel our show.  As you may know, TNT is undergoing a huge sea change, and sadly, we’ve fallen victim to it.  But the rallying cry you have on your website applies to us here in LA, too:” “yesterday we cried, today we fight back.”   Dallas is blessed not only with the best cast and crew I’ve ever had the privilege to work with, but also with the best, most supportive, and most passionate executives I’ve ever worked with.  They’re not taking our cancellation lying down.  They’re fighting back, and with the help of our wonderful fans, I’m hoping that we’ll be able to find a new home for our beloved show.  Thank you for everything you’ve done for us.’

Meanwhile, long time Dallas star Patrick Duffy (Bobby Ewing) has continued to take to Twitter to encourage fans to keep the fight and that he too, wants to continue the Ewings! Duffy tweeted:  “I for one am not done with Bobby Ewing! Let’s see if some network wants the Ewings to live on! Love you all!!”  A few days later he tweeted: “The Save Dallas surge is fantastic everyone. Let’s keep going. I’m feeling All Ewing all over again. Love Patrick” And followed that with; “We all save Dallas... Let’s all have a big-ass party at Southfork… What do you all say ! ?!”

So, do you think we can bring back the fourth season of Dallas? If not with TNT, where would you like to see it resurrected again? And, have you signed the online petition?  Comment below!

Please don’t cancel Dallas. My family has followed Dallas since the late 1970’s. As my children are now adults, we have purchased dvd’s to watch when we are together. My children reside in Sweden, Texas, Boston, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
We spend hours watching the original series and now enjoy the new generation. My family anticipates each season! There are and have been great writers for this exciting drama. Dallas has generations of loyal viewers and I hope we can all #savedallas. Thank you.

Good Luck…my problem with Dallas is there is no J.R…he was the show…second the cast couldve gone on without him but the women in this version were mostly weak, nothing new for Suellen but a return to the bottle, too few episodes between seasons and a terrible time slot…i just couldnt stick with it…enjoyed the first season, then things went downhill from there…i say add a few more episodes, try a different time slot, and drop Ann from the show…bring in a stronger female to play opposite Bobby…maybe ill watch then if the show returns!!!

It’s a shame you didn’t watch season 3 then because I think you would have a different opinion. Yes JR is gone, but John Ross more than proved he is the new JR……and Judith Light’s character is anything but weak. I agree bad day and time, too long between seasons and no advertising but that is not a reflection of the show….. That is all on TNT. Please give season 3 a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised and may even join #SaveDallas!

I would so love for another network (CBS????) to pick up the show. Actually would prefer a cable show based on some of the racy scenes we’ve seen, but whoever would pick the show up would benefit them as well as us fans. SAVE DALLAS

Dallas has to be brought back, but clearly its ratings are not for broadcast television. If it wants to see a growth in audience it has to remain true to its game, in that its writers and executive producer has to retain full creative control over the series. If it were to be brought back to life, on another cable network I’d say CMT – Country Music Television, TruTV, Lifetime TV, USA, A&E, OWN, FXX, FX, WeTV, Hallmark Channel, Hulu, Hulu+, iTunes. My sincerest hope is that it does live on for more then a season, let the blackmail and… Read more »

I want this show renewed. But I just don’t see anyone else picking it up. I imagine it’s not cheap due to the cast. To those who want CBS to pick it up – that’s just not going to happen. It’s ratings are way too low to be on broadcast.

TNT should have had the decency to at least give them a short-term renewal for another season, maybe 6 episodes or something, just so the writers could wrap things up and give the show a proper send off. To just pull the plug this way with so many stories still unresolved really sucks. I signed the petition, I hope everyone does. It takes 5 seconds of your time. Hopefully some other network picks them up. There are channels out there that would kill for the type of prime time ratings and demographics that Dallas brought. I don’t know where they… Read more »

I say screw TNT, they’ve made us suffer, they have put many many fans through hell but I would love to thank TNT. Their cancellation of the show is only going to make it stronger. I’ve heard of fans petition in other circumstances with shows being takin off the air but this is unheard of. The diehard Dallas fans as am I (#SAVEDALLAS) I think are shocking other networks as to how bad we want the show to continue. Getting back to my original response I really think CBS CBS CBS #SAVEDALLAS should and will pick the series BUT BUT… Read more »

Yes I would love too see Dallas live on. Love the show it’s a shame tv has taken over so much I would love to see them back on regular channel, CBS or one of those or even the family channel. there is alot of people who watch family because of Pretty little liars. I would bet you they would have more of an audience on that channel, because it is popular, I am very upset they took it off the air TV as plenty of channels for Dallas to stay but we also need one channel popular that it… Read more »

I’ve signed, and so has so many others I know. Dallas has been around for most of our lives, it’s a part of us, part of America, the good and the bad. Ewing have lived died and been born right along with our families, and we’ve all shared in it. We’re all a little bit Ewing.

I hope the season gets picked up by some network or Netflix. Of not at least a TV movie to finish out the plot lines. I think we’d all like to see a happy ending to the Ewing saga. Maybe even Bobby and Cliff ending their days as friends. Just a thought.

DALLAS is the best show on tv. It has supremely, extremely superb in actors, plots, and drama. You NEVER know what’s going to happen. It is a fantastic entertaining escape from the daily stresses of our lives. It is pure genius and magic! The last time I saw a tv show that had me sitting on the edge of my seat and anxiously waiting for next week’s episode was the first Dallas. Why oh why a tv network wouldn’t want this show on their roster is beyond belief. I honestly believe that Season 4 will bring in a record amount… Read more »

When Dallas was first cancelled on 10/3, I must admit that I was in shock. Yes, the ratings were low, but two things here: there were shows that had much lower ratings AND the DVR recordings and On Demand ratings were never counted in, which would have brought those ratings up. No one is even denying this. It saddens me to know that, YET AGAIN, a tv network has screwed up. Everyone wants Dallas back and everyone knows what a legend the show was and still is. What is it with these horrid reality shows like those “nude forest people.”… Read more »

I never watched the episodes in real time, but DVR’d the whole season and LOVED it from the start. I was skeptical when it was revamped, but it has had me totally hooked for the last 3 seasons and I am so tired of having networks cancel shows that I am invested in without at least allowing for a real ending or a resolution to the cliff hanger (Revolution, V, Invasion, etc.) At LEAST allow for a TV movie to wrap the series up in the style in deserves after being part of American culture since 1979!

So the #saveDallas campaign is in full force now and seems to be going quite well. Patrick Duffy stated in an interview that he is extremely pleased with how the fan base has reacted (it is also a Global Campaign now, so once again Dallas made history) and to please continue doing as we have been. He stated that negotiations are still going on and because of legalities it takes plenty of time, but where one door closed several are optimistic. So for those of you who do NOT want Dallas back simply because JR is no longer in the… Read more »

TNT cancelled it because they wanted ‘smarter, edgier and better written programming. They will be airing JoJo’ s Circus reruns in its place and expect ratings to double.

C’mon this show in Cidre’ s hands was awful. If she accidentally created a great scene or started a promising storyline, rest assured she would screw it all up before the next episode finished. Horrible producer , shockingly so.

ABC and PEOPLE’s ‘The Story of Soaps’: What Was Your Review Of It?

Tuesday’s night airing of ABC and PEOPLE’s two-hour special The Story of Soaps featured many notable daytime and primetime soap stars, past and present, clips from backstage to classic memorable moments, and some participants who were providing commentary on the erosion of the daytime soaps in our culture.  Still others, maintained and realized that everything today is serialized from the news we watch, to some of Netflix’s most binge-watchable series, and of course, the birth of reality-programming.

Throughout the airing of the special, The Story of Soaps was trending on Twitter and social media either at the #2, #3 or #4 spots for the entire duration of the broadcast presentation, and the cancelled and beloved All My Children was also at one point trending.

However, known soap writers, journalists, ardent fans, and actors of the genre, were all on Twitter last night live-tweeting their thoughts as the special went down, and there was definitely mixed reactions and reviews, when all was said and done.

What the special did not shy away from, but tackled, was Luke’s rape of Laura at the campus disco on General Hospital. and how that moment now, as Genie Francis (Laura), so eloquently put, would be considered as ‘date rape’ in our culture.  The series even included a pivotal moment where Laura addresses Luke (Tony Geary) about the rape years later, after helping Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) through her rape ordeal.

John Stamos (Ex-Blackie Parrish, GH) got a bevy of “Right On’s!” for his comment that the soaps do not get the credit that they deserve and clearly came through as one of the soaps greatest supporters, as did former The Doctors and Knots Landing star, Alec Baldwin.

However, throughout the two-hours, Andy Cohen’s commentary was thread throughout; mostly citing soap’s demise and the creation of reality-programming and his “Real Housewives” franchise, that the special touted as the new soap operas.  It continued on the narrative that people preferred to see real-life drama then made-up drama on a fictional soap.  And while, that has been a trend in American culture for decades, the commentary came off as often out of place in a celebration of the soaps; and bringing in a lot of negativity to the special that soap fans were tired of hearing.

In a lighting rod moment, Cohen stated: “I know Susan Lucci doesn’t agree with me, but I think that the Housewives have replaced soap operas because truth is stranger than fiction. Soaps became kind of unnecessary because you could do it with real people, and they’re writing the drama themselves.”

The special did also address the cancellations of All My Children and One Life to Live, (which many were not sure they were going to do – given this special was airing on ABC), where One Life’s leading lady and six-time Daytime Emmy winner, Erika Slezak (Ex-Viki) said what we all wanted to sa ywhen the ax fell on the towns of Llanview and Pine Valley, “People were horrified”.

Clearly, OJ Simpson and his murder trial and reality-programming were also given a chunk of time to show where the once mighty landscape of daytime soaps which once had 13 shows on the air, dwindled town to 4.  But, it would have been nice to see more time spent on how in this day and age, the people in this current landscape of the genre work so hard to get episodes done at an unbelievable pace, and how in that climate the performers still deliver gut-wrenching performances.

Photo: ABC

Former Loving, OLTL and Breaking Bad star, Bryan Cranston, did point out how the once powerful soaps, just don’t have the dollars they used to, and need to, to help with production costs and their taping schedule.

Viewers were reminded of soaps’ socially relevant storylines including hankie-inducing moments from: Robin (Kimberly McCullough) and Stone’s (Michael Sutton) HIV/AIDS storyline on General Hospital, to Billy Douglas being a gay teen coming out on One Life to Live, played by a young Ryan Phillippe.

There also did not seem time spent on the contributions of William J. Bell; one of the most prominent writers of the soap genre of all-time.

For many commenting on social media last night, there seemed to be a feeling of some glaring omissions of participants who could speak on this genre, who have been in the trenches as soap producers, soap writers, pundits, actors, and more, who were not included in the special.

So, what was your review of The Story of Soaps? How would you grade it? Do you feel it accurately reflected the history of the genre?  Were you happily surprised,  or when it came to the end where you over it, or somewhere in between? Sound off in the comment section below.  Below are some tweets from notables who have worked as an actor, a writer, and a journalist in the soaps.
