Soap Vet Judith Chapman Plays Nancy Reagan in New Will Smith Film ‘King Richard’

Photo: JPI

Now here’s another real-life legend role that will be taken on by the one and only Judith Chapman.  As daytime soap fans know, Chapman has a massive resume on the soaps from Natalie on ATWT to Ginny on GH, to Diana and Angelique on DAYS, to Gloria on Y&R to roles on Ryan’s Hope, and more.

In the latest bit of casting news from Chapman herself, she will be seen in the role of former First Lady, Nancy Reagan in the new Will Smith film, King Richard based on the life of Tennis champs, Serena and Venus Williams, father, Richard Williams.

According to Yahoo News: Liev Schreiber has also joined the cast of the film.  Schreiber will play tennis coach Paul Cohen, a famous instructor who worked with several leading tennis players including John McEnroe and Pete Sampras, amongst others. The script has been done by Zach Baylin and depicts the story of Williams, who trained his two daughters to play tennis without having any prior knowledge of the sport and turned them both into Grand Slam winners and World No. 1 Players in the world.”

Chapman posted on her Facebook page: “Pleased to leak the latest … I will be playing “Just Say No” NANCY REAGAN in Will Smith’s new film..”KING RICHARD” about Venus & Serena’s Dad and their rise to Tennis Fame! Last year TALLULAH…HAH! The Life of an Actor!!”

Bring her back to Y&R – She is very much needed!

She is so very long overdue to make any long of an appearance. Especially now since she is going to be a grandma again.

That’s well earned. Congrats to Judith Chapman.

She is a very, very good soap actress. The woman has so much screen presence that I think she could simply read the phone book in a scene and keep the viewers interested. It dumbfounds me that the remaining soaps don’t hire (and heavily use) unemployed veteran soap actors like Judith Chapman and Elizabeth Hubbard (ATWT’s Lucinda Walsh). These folks have a proven history of not just acting talent but the ability to capture viewers’ attention. The overall quality of the shows has slipped in the past 15 years. Why they aren’t clamoring to get these people is beyond me.

Chapman, Hubbard, Tricia Cast (Y&R’s Nina) and several others are so talented that they likely could make the poorly written scripts actually compelling and worth watching. It is just insane that folks like Chapman haven’t been put under contract and heavily used by the soaps. If that were the case, we wouldn’t be reading articles like this — as Chapman would be way too busy playing Y&R’s Gloria to have time for other gigs.

When the last soap leaves the air and the reasons for the industry’s demise are discussed, the failure to use these people when the opportunity is so obvious should get a high-ranking on that list.

I wouldn’t mind seeing her come back to Y&R. Jack could use her right about now. I read that Greg Riccart is going back to DOOL. I like him as Kevin but not in the part he played on Days.

DAYS’ Christie Clark Shares Coronavirus Health Update

Days of our Lives fans love her as as Carrie Brady, and are often very happy when they find out Christie Clark is back for a visit taping episodes of the NBC soap opera.  But that’s not what’s happening right now.  Right now, we need Christie to get all her strength back.

Clark shared via her Instagram today a health update on her battle with the coronavirus that hit both her and her husband while they have been living in the United Kingdom.

Christie expressed: “Oh my goodness, just starting to feel ok on this end. My husband Tom and I have had coronavirus fairly bad. Not as bad as some, no hospital needed. Hope your all well! I’m sure at this stage you all know of someone with it? When you get it, you can’t call the grandparents for help, cause they will get sick. We know about 10 people in our little circle that have had it. Like clockwork, Day 7,8,&9 were tricky and haven’t been able to taste food for a while. So excited to be in the land of the living again & start exercising…soon. Thanks for all the love. Stay safe!”

Send your well-wishes to Christie and Tom as they are on currently getting stronger and recovering from the virus via the comment section below.

47th Annual Daytime Emmy Ceremonies Canceled Due To Coronavirus Pandemic

There won’t be any “And the Enmy goes to _” come this June, where NATAS had originally scheduled three nights of award presentations honoring the best in daytime programming at the 47th Annual Daytime Emmys.   The three-day event was slated for June 12-14th, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena. California.  Deadline broke the story of the decision to postpone daytime’s biggest night, for now.

NATAS president and CEO Adam Sharp said of today’s decision: “These were extremely difficult decisions to make, but at the end of the day the health and safety of our event attendees and staff must remain our paramount concern,” NATAS president and CEO Adam Sharp said of today’s decision. “We are closely monitoring public heath authorities’ guidance, seeking feedback from our awards communities, and evaluating the flexibility of our venue and production partners as we plan for the future in this unprecedented context.”

NATAS chairman Terry O’Reilly said on the change” “Given our concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided that we will not be staging the 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards in Pasadena this coming June.  As there are so many unknowns right now with the flow of information changing on a daily, almost hourly, basis, it would simply be irresponsible to move forward with our annual celebration of excellence in daytime television at this time.”
