Days Of Our Lives
SOD Names General Hospital Best Show! Roger Howarth & Eileen Davidson Take Top Acting Honors!

Courtesy/ABC
The year end Best and Worst lists are beginning to roll out! Every year one of the most highly anticipated, and one that we always enjoy seeing the opinion of, is that of legendary soap opera magazine, Soap Opera Digest!
In their latest issue on sale now (12/16/2013) the editors name their picks for the best and worst performances, best and worst shows, best and worst couples and much more! However, we wanted to share with you their three top Bests for 2013!
ABC’s General Hospital was named Best Show! SOD cited, “The show’s 50th was, in the end, a marvelously fitting milestone year, tinted with nostalgia, driven by nimble, forward moving story-line thrust and providing a strong sense of the expansive Port Charles community!” In addition, SOD goes on to say that GH’ greatness over the calendar year was in large part due to its tremendous cast.

Roger Howarth was given the Best Actor accolades for his performances as Todd Manning in the online revival of One Life to Live, as well as his role as the new Franco on General Hospital! SOD noted, “When outside forces required him to retire his most enduring and complex soap creation, Todd Manning, from the GH universe, Howarth closed out his run like a champ!” SOD also adds that he tackled one of the greatest challenges in taking on the role of Franco, and making him a leading man.
Eileen Davidson, who stole the show on NBC’s Days of our Lives as Kristen DiMera in 2013, was named Best Actress along with her stints as Ashley on The Young and the Restless! SOD said on their choice, “The actress made you feel for her sexy, complicated alter ego, and she demonstrated an impressive knack for smoothly transitioning from cool, calm, and collected to frenzied mania without it feeling forced or rehearsed.”
Make sure to pick up your copy of Soap Opera Digest to check out all their choices! And make sure to be on the lookout for On-Air On-Soaps Annual Best and Worsts List coming the last week of December! I
n the meantime, what do you think of SOD’s choices of General Hospital, Roger Howarth and Eileen Davidson? Do you agree, or disagree? Let us know!
Thought I love Eileen Davidson – I have to give Best Actress to Finola Hughs ! The duel role scenes were played with pure atristic perfection and her scenes with Anders Hove were just chilling -not to mention her heart wrenching reunion with Robin !
You’re spot on, John. (excuse the rhyme).
Finola Hughes was pitch perfect as Anna, who can say so much with an expression or with her eyes. She just keeps getting better. Also, Tristan Rogers deserves best actor, not Roger as Carrot Top. Robert and Anna presented a seamless tag team providing a perfection in symmetry and rhythm. They were things of beauty to behold.
They all deserve it…so what was the worse? I know people will say Roger was great as Todd but a few will say no way as Franco…some will say worse was Sabrina with Patrick with few who like it…Kathleen Gati as Dr.O was a scene stealer as well as,4get name, who played Faison…im addicted to these two…its like being hooked on drugs or alcohol…is there a rehab center for this? lol
“General Hospital” was without question the best soap of 2013. The other three didn’t even come within shooting distance. Here’s to an equally fantastic 2014!!!
Disagree! To not come within a shooting distance? No, DAYS has been compelling this year!
Agreed.
my honest to goodness matter of fact… DAYS surpassed GH.
collectively… the one storyline… in thee past year.. that… floundered…
Daniel and Jenn… snooze… gouge my eyes out… but didn’t FF.
GH… Patrick and Sabrina… Sonny’s Brood (sons w/Olivia and Carly are lacking)
neck and neck in my opinion
GH’s 50th has come and gone… and.. nothing.. per se.. to recall…. it happened.. and now that it’s all ooh and aah over Patrick and Robin… and IT IS ALL THAT… let’s give it to GH next year…
and repeat Days of OUR Lives… BEST Serial…. AGAIN! Ta-Da! 2014!
you are so right – days has been on fire this year………….
I agree with Joshua. The overall quality of General Hospital overall has been as good as anything in primetime. Top to bottom the show is untouchable. Days has vastly improved this past year but the acting alone doesn’t even get within striking distance of GH. If there’s one thing that sets GH apart from all the other soaps which has always been the case even when the writing has been terrible, it’s the consistency of stellar performances that genuinely suck you into the Port Charles reality with believability that is incomparable and rails against the soap opera stigma of ‘bad acting’. Something that has been consistent with GH throughout the many writing regime changes at GH is the genius of their casting director Marc Teschner who rarely gets the recognition he deserves for his part in sustaining the show through the difficult transitions it has gone through over the years.
I just love GH. It is just great everyday. I sopped watching for years and now under Ron and Frank the show is just on fire. Never a boring moment…
I agree. I had stopped watching too but never miss a day now.
Oh I miss days–days when Tanko and Knarly are on, or Kiki, Morgan and Ava are on. Oh, and when Sonny is musing how to kill someone yet again with his new henchman, Sean. I only tuned back into GH to watch the return of Robert Scorpio and his baby girl, Robin, not to mention the brilliant Finola Hughes as Anna. I optimize why the ratings went up and Wen Robert is gone, then so am I.
Everyone seems to be in denial as to exactly why those ratings went up when they did.
COULD NOT AGREE MORE! 2013 has been GH’s best year in a decade!
Except for the chopping, horrific pacing of the storylines which left fans hanging for months.
What? Roger pulled in some stellar performances as Todd Manning on Prospect’s OLTL, but as Franco on General Hospital? He was Carrot Top without the depth.
Yup, it’s all in the writing. Cartini made him a clown as both Todd and Franco. But in the PP version of OLTL, our old Todd was back. The one I remember from way back when…all dark and twisty.
RH as Franco? Seriously? I agree about Todd, but when you have to twist a character like the pretzel they have for Franco, um, no. How much have they whitewashed him and he’s still the same homicidal psycho he was when he came on. Bad move, GH.
I concur, of course.
GH is definitely the best show by far. However, I think Finola Hughes should definitely have been named best actress. She is phenominal! Don’t care for the character of Franco one bit. RH was good as Todd but I think Y&R’s Billy or Adam are best actors.
SOD, I concur! I need to get the issue on newsstands to see everything among the winner and losers. This daytime drama resurgence excites me to no end, and I pray it continues. What a mistake so-called power brokers made in letting go of so many legacy programs and wounding the genre’s pride. Yes, life changes but as we see with so much else, life is less appealing when the joys are minimized and forgotten. I see it with Christmas traditions, family values (and I do not mean that as fundamental or right wing, rather courtesy, morals, and manners), and the rush to buy, to grow up, and to get ahead.
Enough of my soap box, forgive me! 🙂
Merry Christmas to you and no you are not a nut case or a right winger I hate that we have put labels on people who believe in morals etc. may you have a very Merry Christmas and yes this is the time to remember who was born this day and all he did for us!
Well said, k/kay! And amen. While we may not always see eye to eye on every aspect of our soaps, I still find your posts intelligent, compelling, enjoyable and full of integrity!!!! Merry Christmas to you!
Agree with GH! Not so sure about Roger Howarth as best actor of 2013. Eileen deserves the accolades, but to me Finola is the best actress in daytime!
“Oh, my god!” – OMG
Eileen! Eileen! Eileen! I love You…. You deserve this accolade… with all my heart… BIG Time!
I miss you… in Salem! Yet! You belong in Genoa City! I love you in both places!
for what it’s worth… DAYS is so much better!
SOD made some great choices! GH is, by far, the best soap. I’m loving its renewed quality and popularity! It’s hard to pick best actors because so many gave such great performances this past year, but Roger and Eileen were pretty awesome, and deserving of the honor.
Go GH!! A great and entertaining year for the show.
GH is outstanding!!! The King of the soaps..
Roger Howarth is amazing!
He owns every character he plays, an excellent actor..
GH has been reborn into greatness!!!! Never a dull moment!
BRAVO GH !!!
Every time I read your posts, I need a cup of chamomille tea to soothe my nerves. You remind me of Heather.
Except Heather is actually funny……totally insane, of course! But funny….
True that, Shay, true that. But both Heather and Su6666 scare the hell out of me.
Yes, Harry, but at least Heather is only fictional! Su6666 (great designation…by the way) is out there wandering amongst us… better stock up on extra chamomile tea, you may need it!!!! Hah!
Eileen Davidson was the main reason Days Of Are Lives ratings went up an people tuned into Days. Kristin her character made each show . She is one great actress an wish she would return to Days of Are Lives. Days needs her back so badly.
I would have picked DAYS as best show… Roger Howarth as best actor, Ari Zucker as best actress. Kristen’s rape of Father Eric on DAYS as best storyline. Sami and EJ from DAYS as best couple, Julian Jerome on GH as best new Character, Dr. Obrect as best villain.
Very Nice! high 5.
except… Eileen Davidson Best actress.
Ari Zucker… best supporting.
I hope JJ… Theresa… Nick… submit nominations… Will, Sonny, Justin, Adrienne!!
along with the Veterans… Eric, Brady, Nicole, EJ, Kristen…Victor, Kate
you know… it’s been posted… about continuity… ie: how some days… weeks.. even.. how GH: ( is their cast larger than DAYS?) often go this long… without seeing a story progress…. I think DAYS production does a better job at showcasing.. their canvas… cast reel.
so.. for overall… production… i have to hand it to DAYS.
GH… I can’t argue… next year gets thee prize
Love Ari Zucker, too!
I am going to make everyone very upset but Peter Bergman brings it home every time their are some actors who just have it he is one it does not matter if he is in major storyline he turns shit to gold! He is my pick this year he always brings it home!!!!
Not upset at all–you’re right. Peter Bergman is a brilliant actor.
He may be a fne actor, but to me, the late Terry Lester will always be the quintessential Jack Abbott….and Peter Bergman is forever Dr. Cliff Warner!!!
I love Roger as franco he is the best actor on daytime
You are wrong–Roger as Franco has been an unmitigated disaster, he knows it, Frank and Ron know it, and the fans know it. The soap rag editors have to rally around this colossal mistake because they have to validate their idiotic decisions to save face.
This character was the result of James Franco slumming on the soaps–Franco wasn’t supposed to be played by anyone else but Franco. Roger has been at how to play this role and has basically given up. And I can’t watch him with Carly, the man eating plant from The Little Shop of Horrors either.
hmm – talk about needing some “chamomille tea”…
lol soap characters can be played by whomever at any time in all soaps, characters are recast and changed, Franco is not immune to recast/change..
Some people don’t ”get it”
RH is Franco in name only..
This Franco recreation is not meant to be like the first Franco, and the slate was cleared when the tumor went in the jar giving this Franco new beginnings…
Some people have to move on. Soap people change all the time.
I love RH as Franco, he would be the only actor that could pull it off and make this reborn Franco his own..
RH’s acting is beyond reproach .. 🙂
No offense Su666, but you’re rather obtuse. First, Roger deserved a new part scripted just for him. Instead he was handed a part which was supposed to be James Franco just having fun at GH’s expense. Franco is a serial killer who orchestrated the rape of Carly’s virginal son in prison. Now, we have the forever randy Carly boinking him without a thought in the world The old convenient tumor excuse does not negate Franco’s past anymore than Roger’s idiotic and pathetic attempts at humor do. This character is not working and everyone knows it.
su0000–you apparently did not watch him on As the World Turns, where he was utterly dreadful (a shocking surprise for me, given how top notch he was on One Life to Live, that he could be as bad as he was). That said, I’m not going to lay the Franco blame at his feet–it was a terrible idea, just terrible.
I have to jump in on this one RH plays RH no matter what soap he is on. I could not tolerate him as Todd he grins with a smirk constantly he needs to do stand up comedy. He is not an actor of any substance. What really disturbs me the most is people glorifying the character of Todd a low down rapist and Franco a low down murderer etc. Give me Mac Cory the supreme Douglas Watson who was a gentleman on camera and off any day! Yes I am showing my age but to even put this guy in the same ballpark as others drives me nuts!
Could someone have been shocked when Robin showed up alive? Where were the tears? The ahock? The joy? I realize that people in Port Charles are used to back from the dead scenaroos….but seriously…all Elizabeth did was casually hug Robin and say “I’ve missed you.”. Where was he soapy melodrama?? Mac and felicia acted like Robin was out for coffee. When you tell these big epic stories…you have to have the writing and acting to support them.
I agree–the writing has been sadly lacking not to mention rather out of tune and odd.
Robin’s daughter is the only heart felt reaction to her return. i desperately wanted to see Robin and Patrick run off (with Emma) straight from the wedding. instead he left her 2 minutes after seeing her to deal with Sabrina. that just did not seem right. Patrick pined for his dead wife for 2 years and now here she is back from the dead and he is what??….. Conflicted about who to choose? Seriously. SERIOuSLY??????? it seems like they are going to drag this Sabrina thing out as long as possible 🙁
I agree that E Davidson was phenomenal but cannot even fathom how Roger Howarth is even in contention. I cannot watch GH when he is on. I must be in the minority (shrugs)! I believe that Jason Thompson and Dom Zamprogna are the (male) forces to watch on GH. Finola Hughes is also an amazing performer. My female favs (from GH) this year are Finola and Kirsten Storms.
You are most certainly NOT in the minority. And when Robert is gone, and the Robin reveal subsides and we are subjected to the repugnant pairing of Carly and Franco, not to mention Kiki and Michael and Sonny and Olivia, the ratings are going to plummet.
@Harry. Thank you for the honest reveal. it’s the truth.
Days is magnetic… I would not diss any one… for not getting it… but..
I liken it to more adult fare…. a thought provoking drama… that reels…
you hit it on the nail… I think that the subsiding of Parick and Robin… once they are back together… is going to happen… altho they are always going to have an audience… the major core of what makes GH.
Franco and Carly… with his “new” identity… hitting the sheets… declaring love… goes ??? nowhere! it’s now up to Franco… with his new parents to further along story… what is Franco’ identity… he’s not an artist?
I can’t even go their… with Sonny his sons… unfortunately Olivia is saddled with this bunch… and they can keep I dont get the appeal Kiki… and Carly can screech all she wants about her sons…. duh!
it’s going to be a neck and neck fever pitch… LOL… for fans at any rate
GH best actress: Finola Hughes, Anna
DAYS best actress: Eileen Davidson, ex-Kristen
GH best supporting: Kirsten Storms, Maxie
DAYS best supporting: Ari Zucker, DAYS
naturally… I want DAYS… if I have to resign myself… I’ll take GH… I just hope it’s not a sweep!
for fans who watch both shows… it seems clear to me… its on par even
Oh Harry you are so spot on about the character of Carly who for the record I could never stand to lay with a man who had her son raped in prison and did such awful things to her best friend Jason makes me realize that RC has NO respect for women.
After today on GH I felt like slugging Patrick myself, Sabrina should be ashamed to appear so desperate. She put the rings back on after she offered them back to him at the church. She should back off because she’ll never be sure of Patrick’s love. This man’s wife has HIV and the women still want to jump in bed w/him. That’s never stopped all women from wanting Patrick. Nobody’s being careful. I’m glad Maxie is ready to have her back, you know she plays “dirty”. I can understand Patrick being a little confused , please give a break. Please tell me why Sonny has not figured out Ava’s initials are AJ, he needs to remove his “HATE” blinders about AJ Q. so that he can see the truth.
Yes, Virginia, you are right!
“…Please tell me why Sonny has not figured out Ava’s initials are AJ, he needs to remove his “HATE” blinders about AJ Q. so that he can see the truth.”
I think it’s sad to watch Sonny… along with… the cast attached to this story….
why? after all the brouhaha… over all the GH mob overkill… is Sonny featured this way?
because he can’t act any other way…. it’s rather plain… and a realization… that GH is back to filler… for the GH characters…. Sonny, Michael, Kiki, Morgan, Olivia, Carly, Sean… it’s just not interesting….
had it not been for Ava and Julian… this big part of GH… would have floundered…
Eileen Davidson deserves her accolades (and I hope the 2014 Emmys are in sync with her phenomenal performance this year, totally out-acting her co-stars and female counterparts on the other three soaps by a landslide!). Howarth deserves a Most Bizarre Recast award (from Todd to Franco!), as there were much more worth Best Actor contenders this year especially Y&R’s Billy Miller & Michael Muhney! Does anyone have a rundown of SOD’s entire list? I’m searching for the magazine tomorrow but would love a sneak peak as to who made the year-end cuts and who fell hard!
I have no problem with SOD’s choices but I wanted to point out that in the same issue, SOD finally came out and talked about the stories that were not very good on PP’s OLTL and AMC. They panned Victor’s return on OLTL and Cassandra’s kidnapping on AMC. It’s about time someone talked openly about the story mistakes these shows made because the errors were not all behind the scenes. I have to believe the plot holes and bad story choices contributed to people not watching online. Even though SOD and alot of us wanted both shows to succeed, it’s time to stop tip-toeing around what didn’t work on these shows and accept that some story decisions were not good at all.
can’t believe they name that Who is Summer Father mess on YnR as Best Story of the Year
Roger Howarth being named best actor by Soap Opera Digest is well deserved. Roger is a great actor. I think he did an amazing job with the less than stellar material he was given this year by the reboot of OLTL. He worked his acting magic a silly storyline that really had no point what so ever to it. He continue to amaze me on GH in his portrayal of Franco not a an easy role to take on and I think Roger has done a wonderful job in making the character of Franco his own. I say bravo Roger for working under the conditions that you were forced to work under this year and he still turning out two wonderful performances on two seperate soaps playing very different characters.
agree 100%
My bests:
Show, writing: tie DAYS/GH
Directing: GH
Actress: Eileen Davidson, of course
Actor: Greg Vaughan
Story: Eric’s rape and aftermath, DAYS
Best couple: Faison and Dr. Obrecht, GH
Worst show, worst writing, most disappointing show: Y&R
Worst couple: tie, Dillon and Chelsea, Y&R, Brooke and Bill, B&B
Worst story: Delia’s death, Y&R
Character I’ll miss: Kate/Connie, GH
Show I’ll miss: ONE LIFE TO LIVE
Eileen Davidson all the way, baby! She is amazing! Love her! Miss Kristen and her antics!
bought the SOD issue Today!
after reading…. I still believe that DAYS & GH are neck and neck… and it’s either/or to lose….
I so want that, DOOL repeat, because I’ve loved this dark horse… the overlooked… many a year… that it simply repeat as best show…. why not? I hope this
GH fans… I’m rabid with…. I’ll stand salute and salutations… with. next year!
seriously…. with the 50th come and gone…. no real standout(s)
with the advent and eventual… win…. win… win… for GH… NEXT Year…
it wasn’t until…. late november… that the fallout of several stories… finally paid dividends and culminated…
ie: think Brit… Dr. O., Faison, Nicholas
think… Robin returned in this time frame… and escalated
so… bar none… DAYS remained steadfast and steered a stellar year to the WIN!
Roger Howarth plays every character just like he played Todd!!!! Even as Franco he still appears to be playing Todd!!
Days was PHenominal! NBC can personally thank Greg Vaughan, Ari Zucker, and Eileen Davidson and Eric Marstolf for me to have a reason to turn this show on again. I had stopped watching several years ago when it was turned into the “Sami Brady show” ( sorry not a fan of the character or actress). NOt even my beloved Bo and Hope could make me tune in. Eileen looked like she was having a blast. Greg and Ari brought the raw emotional stuff back and forth push – pull/ angst- attraction thing all over the place. Their arguments Those two really suck you in. And The Aftermath at the church with Brady mocking Eric about the rape and the ensuing fight was just so well done and the aftermath with everybody just so raw and Brady turning back into a druggie and attacking everyone was just been wonderful … and they really haven’t even played out what it has been for drugged man to be a victim of rape. Although , knowing Days they will probably gloss that over.
Here’s to a better 2014 .. I really hope Eric and Nicole get together before NBC decides to pull the rug out. Praying the show has a few more years left. and Kristen worms her way back into town… oh and Jennifer, Abby and Sami get pushed off a cliff .

Now, five leading ladies of the soaps are vying for the gold for Lead Actress and the category marked the first-ever nominations for CBS daytime’s Beyond the Gates when two actresses made the final cut. Only General Hospital is not represented among the actresses this year after Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) took home the trophy last year.
