Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed communications officer Uhura on the original Star Trek television series and subsequent motion pictures has died.

The death was confirmed by Nichols’ talent manager and business partner of 15 years, Gilbert Bell.  Nichelle passed away in New Mexico.

In addition to her becoming an enduring fan favorite of the series, Nichelle shared one of the first interracial kisses in television history.  That moment, with her co-star William Shatner, occurred back in 1968 when Uhura and Captain Kirk were made to kiss involuntarily by aliens with the ability to control the movements of humans.  Even with the circumstances for the time it aired, it was considered groundbreaking.

Later, Nichols continued to play Uhura in the first six  Star Trek films. The character was promoted to lieutenant commander in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and to full commander in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

In 2016, Nichelle guest starred on The Young and the Restless as Lucinda Winters, the long-lost mother of the late Kristoff’s St. John’s, Neil Winters.  Nichols received a Daytime Emmy nomination that year for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Daytime Drama Series.  The story was heartbreaking and featured riveting scenes and performances by Nichols and St. John.

The Y&R Insider Twitter account expressed their condolences on Sunday sharing: “RIP to the legendary and extraordinary Nichelle Nichols. It was an honor to her bless #YR with her talents in 2016.”

Kate Mulgrew (Ex-Mary, Ryan’s Hope, and Star Trek: Voyager alum) tweeted, “Nichelle Nichols was The First. She was a trailblazer who navigated a very challenging trail with grit, grace, and a gorgeous fire we are not likely to see again.”

Nichelle is survived by her son, Kyle Johnson.  In a statement on her website, Johnson posted, “Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light, however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration. Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all. I, and the rest of our family, would appreciate your patience and forbearance as we grieve her loss until we can recover sufficiently to speak further. Her services will be for family members and the closest of her friends and we request that her and our privacy be respected. Live Long and Prosper.”

Was not a Treckki, but I certainly remember and applauded this lady when she played Neil’s mom on Y&R. Very touching scenes. RIP to them both.

The 1st ones are hilarious to watch..

I have been a big StarTrek fan since it’s beginning. Nichelle was one of the reasons I have enjoyed it over the years. Beside the first interracial kiss on tv with Captain Kirk (William Shatner), she was a “woman” communications officer, and part of a diverse group of officers working on the bridge of the ship. And she had a beautiful singing voice. May she meet others of the crew who have gone before her.

Anne Heche ‘Not Expected to Survive’; Suffered Severe Brain Injury From Fiery Crash

In just heartbreaking news, Daytime Emmy-winner, Anne Heche (Ex-Vicky/Marley, Another World), is not expected to survive after days in the hospital following being severely burned in a fiery car crash when her vehicle struck a home in Mar Vista, California last Friday.

According to family and friends of the motion picture and television star in a statement, “Unfortunately, due to her accident, Anne Heche suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and remains in a coma, in critical condition. She is not expected to survive. It has long been her choice to donate her organs and she is being kept on life support to determine if any are viable.”  Deadline notes, the actress will be taken off life-support.

The statement went on to say, “We want to thank everyone for their kind wishes and prayers for Anne’s recovery and thank the dedicated staff and wonderful nurses that cared for Anne at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills hospital.  More than her extraordinary talent, she saw spreading kindness and joy as her life’s work — especially moving the needle for acceptance of who you love. She will be remembered for her courageous honesty and dearly missed for her light.”

There are plans for Heche to get an Honor Walk, which is a hero’s goodbye donor patients receive by hospital staff as they are wheeled into the operating room in their final journey.

Heche will be featured on Lifetime’s Girl in Room 13, set to premiere this fall in September. Lifetime’s Executive VP  and head of programming, Amy Winter, revealed earlier this week at the TCA press tour, “As many of you know, Anne remains in critical condition and all of us here at Lifetime are deeply concerned for her and everyone affected. This project is important to Anne, along with each and every one of us. We all sought to make a film that would bring attention to this appalling issue of human sex trafficking.”

In addition, TMZ had reported that following toxicology reports, Cocaine was found in Heche’s system following the crash. They also found fentanyl. However,  sources say fentanyl can often be used as a pain medication in hospitals, so there is no confirmation that it was in Anne’s system at the time of the crash.

Anne was an amazing actress with such a tortured life.  We send thoughts and prayers to all her loved ones during this difficult time.  Share your thoughts on the latest update on Anne in the comment section below.

Anne Heche in “Extremely Critical Condition”; Still in Coma Following Fiery Car Crash

Although earlier reports over the weekend had soap opera alum and Daytime Emmy-winner, Anne Heche (Ex-Vicky/Marley, Another World) in stable condition following crashing her car into a home, on Monday an update on her condition looked more grim.

According to a statement provided to Deadline by Heche’s rep: “At this time Anne is in extreme critical condition. She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention. She is in a coma and has not regained consciousness since shortly after the accident.”

Since last Friday, Heche has been hospitalized following a harrowing incident where she crashed her car which caught fire into a private home in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles.

In addition, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Annie Hernandez told City News Service that investigators obtained a warrant for a blood draw from Heche.

Over the last few days, a new episode of Heche’s podcast “Better Together” with her co-host Heather Duffy was released, which showed the actress slurring her speech.

Erroneous reports said that the podcast which dropped on Friday, was also recorded that day, and that Heche had been drinking prior to her accident during the show.  However, it has come to light that Heche taped that episode last Tuesday, not the day of the crash.

Anne Heche in Critical Condition After Fiery Car Crash

UPDATED: TV and film star, and Another World alum, Anne Heche (Ex-Vicky/Marley) is in critical condition following a harrowing and fiery car crash in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon.

“Anne is in the ICU, she’s lucky to be alive. She has severe burns and has a long recovery ahead. Her team and her family are still trying to process what led up to the crash,” a source close to the actress revealed to CNN on Saturday morning.

According to reports and video obtained by TMZ, Heche was driving at lighting speed and crashed twice in a residential area of Mar Vista.  In the initial crash, Anne, who was driving a Mini Cooper slammed into the garage of an apartment complex. Residents attempted to get Anne out of the vehicle but she put her car in reverse and then sped away.  Next, she crashed into a home, which ignited a fire, and the fire engulfed the entire home.  However, Anne was severely burned in the fire and taken out by ambulance in a stretcher.

According to Los Angeles Fire Department Capt Erik Scott: “We had a significant traffic collision, we had entrapment of a woman inside that, we had car that erupted into fire, and then we had a home that had significant fire that is red tagged. It’s at this point destroyed.”

Heche is currently in a Los Angeles hospital, and had to be intubated following being severely burned.

Soaps fans know that Anne won a Daytime Emmy for her dual roles on Another World and played Vicky and Marley Hudson from 1987-2001.  She has also appeared in the films, Donnie Brasco, Six Days Seven Nights, Wag the Dog. and more.  On television, Heche has appeared in the last few years on: Dancing with the Stars, Quantico and Chicago P.D.

We will continue to monitor this developing story.
