Steve Burton Interview – General Hospital

General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason) chatted with Michael Fairman about his current heartbreaking storyline where Jason’s biological son, Jake, is in a hit and run accident and pronounced brain-dead following surgery, and the ramifications it has for Jason, Carly, Josslyn, Elizabeth & Sam.

You want to act? Trust me Mr Burton…YOU ARE BRINGING IT!!! All of you are doing a wonderful job.

I hate Jason. He treated his son like trash, he enjoys killing more than being a father. He should’ve kept his aging face away from that hospital and in Carly’s ass where it belongs.

its not Jason fault he didnt want to be with Elizabeth
She should have shared the child

Jason could have chosen to co-parent with Liz if he didn’t want to be with her.. she didn’t have to be included to be with his son to be a parent.

Elizabeth is the one that insisted and constantly told Jason over and over that his life is too dangerous to be around Jake

JessicaRR

Jason loved Liz and Jake. He wanted to marry Liz but then Michael got shot and Jason got scared, which was completely understandable. Heck, even Carly kept Sonny from his sons many times because of the mob.
But Elizabeth is right, Jason chose to walk away from his little boy (while he raised Michael for how many years?). Elizabeth and Lucky are the ones that really lost a son. Rebecca and Jonathon gave emmy wiinning performances so did Steve.
If Carly killed Jason’s kid, I hope he goes scary on her!

jason left his son cause he didnt want him to get hurt from jason being in the mob so its not his fault.

Great interview Michael thanks for posting! Looking forward to Jason and Sam’s story coming out of this!

Me too..it’s time for Jason to think of HIS life for a change. Sam makes him happy so he needs to take their relationship to a higher level. They are both beyond “boyfriend/girlfriend” crap. I just hope the rumors are true that he is going to ask her to marry him! Liz did not want to co-parent with Jason, in fact, she didn’t want Jason anywhere near Jake so he did what she asked of him. End of story.

What a pack of crock is been spew about GH, it is the worst show now killing Jake so that mob mistress could have a child is crude and TPTB will see it when the ratings drop and the Liason fan goes to another station and give their ratings to CBS or NBC. I haven’t watch GH since 2008 and has been looking at CBS and NBC. Jason is all about his mob family and never wanted a family with Liz because he wouldn’t be able to smell Carly’s Ass so GH can be canel and I will dance on it’s grave. Come on Liason fans give CBS and NBC your ratings and forget GH..

Kathy
Kathy

WOW! So your saying that in order to be with Liz Jason should have quit his job and give up his best friend? Why couldn’t Liz quit her job and become more of a part of his life style? As for Jason never wanting a family with Liz, in the beginning of course he didn’t, it was one drunken night of sex that was not planned, they weren’t in a relationship or in love with each other but he did want to try but she kept saying his life was too dangerous for Jake to be in but they could be together in secret so really Liz never truely wanted it, well, unless of course Jason completely changed everything about himself and became the person she wanted him to be, instead of her accepting him as he is.

Dana
Dana

Um because Liz is a nurse and Jason is a murderer? See, when you have kids you stop murdering people and hanging around the whore that wanted the kid dead. So yeah, Jason should have CHANGED. When you have a child you either grow the hell up or you’re a douche bag for life. Jason is the latter, and he and the mob whore who bring in the lowest ratings in GH history will sink this show as Frons continues to try ANYTHING to make them work including firing a better actress with a bigger fanbase and killing a child. So pathetic.

Peyton
Peyton

Wow! I’m pretty sure that Liz new that Jason was a “murderer” when she climbed 16 flights of stairs in the dark to take advantage of a heartbroken, drunk man! Jake was a mistake, will you Liason fans remember that-PLEASE!
And Sam, A Mob Whore? Ahhh….Really!!! Liz is the one who had 3 kids by 3 different guys and she has had more paternity tests then I can even remember! She’s a freakin cheater and a way bigger liar and manipulator than Sam has ever been on this show! I know these are all mute points, being that Jason is no longer an option for either Sam or Liz but I found it to be such a Jasam VICOTRY when Jason kicked Lizzy to the curb right before he exited the show. I was jumping up and down when he looked at Lizzy and basically said, I don’t care if Sam is with McBain, if we once shared a child and we are both ” technically” free- I still love Sam so peace out! You have to admit to watching the episode where even Lizzy acknowledges the fact that married or not, Jason will always belong to Sam, PRICELESS moment! Even funnier when RH (Franco) said to Liz just a few days ago “I know I picked Sam over you” such a sweet reminder as to where the writers believe Jason’s heart is, not that I need a reminder! Jasam 4-ever baby!

100% agree. When I think back to the BJ/Maxie story, it was the opposite…not the greatest acting (Not to say it was bad in any way, just not as good as these actors) but the storyline, the directing and vision was SOO much more powerful. I can still cry instantly when I think of Felicia falling to her knees when she realizes its BJ’s heart or when I think of Tony listening to his daughters heart beating inside Maxie…wow. Nothing will ever compare to that storyline.

I hope this s/l does make Jason reevaluate his life. I understand he loves his friendship with carly but is that the only friendship Steve Burton will ever acknowledge. Because I was sure Jason and Elizabeth were friends way before Jake came into the picture and I am postive that she has been their for him even when Carly betrayed him. So is it that he doesn’t acknowledge Liz and Jason’s friendship on purpose or because he doesn’t want to piss off JaXXX fans. He has more chemistry with Becky than anyone else on the show. I am hoping he does grow with this storyline and make some changes in his life one being with the woman that wanted Jake Dead will be a help because if he can’t evaluate that relationship and his sons death I can’t see how he has grown. This s/l is really disappointing though even with all the emotions running and Steve and Becky are doing awesome jobs.. This the most fast paced story line I have ever scene because when do they actually get to mourn Jakes loss before it turns into who did it. Steve’s statement about Jason making the grave for the person who killed his son unfortunately has no merit if it is carly or XXX because he will continue to keep them in his life like he took XXX back after she wanted his son Dead.. and Like Carly calling his son a Bastard so only way justice will come is obviously being either Lisa Niles or Theo and Suzanne to have hit Jake. Not much of a surprise. GH is just predictable.. Though loved the interview.

Sandra
Sandra

Sam jumped out of the window of a building with Jake and stopped him from being blown up! I think she also demonstrated her remorse for what she did to Jake in the past by being prepared to fend off a Russian mobster without bullets at the cabin and giving Liz the gun with bullets to protect her sons and telling Liz to make a run for it,

Jake is now dead because Liz was preoccupied with finding out who her latest baby daddy is…deja vu anyone…..so Jake is now dead and neither Jason or Sam can be blamed for that and I am glad Jake”s death has no link to them being in any way the cause of it.

Shana
Shana

Ok a little revisit in history here because as much as people claimed that the Russians was after Jason they followed XXX to Liz’s house why would she even go there.. but hey she is supper spy right.. She saved Jake because she wanted to get back in Jason’s good graces.. and ON what planet did she ever show remorse to who Jason not even they didn’t talk about it.. She didn’t show it to Liz..
Yeah I can see how SOME XXX fans will blame Liz for this but Damn, Wasn’t XXX driving down that street with her head down at one point.. Maybe she just made good on her promise to finish the job.. Another moment of Weakness for her… Child endangering woman so very proud her fans are. What a joke. I wonder If SBU ever left the show Where would XXX be? she would have no purpose since she can’t truly act..

Kathy
Kathy

Seriously! Sam has never said she wanted Jake dead.

She made a horrific choice during a breakdown and will always be regretful and has appologized many times to all of them for her actions, but lets not forget that Liz went over to where Cam was and turned her back on her baby long enough for Maureen to approach, look around, pick up Jake and then walk off with him; and don’t forget Sam is the one that got Jake and her medical attention after her house fire and Joe had taken over the ER, she convinced him to let them in and help Jake and Liz. And of course who protected them at the cabin from the Russians? That was Sam. Sam told Liz to STAY WITH THE BOYs but did she listen..NO, yes Liz probably saved Sam by shooting that guy but because she left her boys alone Jake was taken. It was Sam that went to help find him and it was Sam that saved him. Yes, that night Liz said Thanks but then immediately went right back to Sam not being good enough to be around.
As for this great friendship and connection between Liz and Jason, where was Liz when Michael was kidnapped? Never saw her contact him to see how he was. Where was Liz when they thought Michael was dead? Never saw her then either. Where was Liz when Jason lost his memory (2nd time)? Never saw her trying to help him, telling him about their life together. Where was Liz when he was refusing treatment and going to die? Never saw her trying to convince him to get help. Where was Liz when he was undergoing Robin’s treatment? Never saw her check up on him, not even while she was working at the hospital. Where was Liz when Jason was having his brain surgery? Again, not even a visit while she was on duty or before or after her shift started.

And, when Jason needed someone to talk, needed help with something or someone to confide in he was NOT knockin on Liz’s door but she had no problem seeking him out to help with her problem’s. This does not sound like much of a grand friendship, sounds more like Liz using Jason when she needed something.

Kathy you are clearly a JaSam fan!! OMG!! Cause that was some bull taking up for Sam. Being a parent, you cant give every child your undivided attention at all times. And to make excuses for Sam is CRAZY!

Michael. I loved your Steve Burton interview. He is so likeable and fun, and shows his sense of humor which you never see on GH. I am surprised at all the fan bashing of Jason, Liz , Carly, etc. If you want to see something redeeming look at Jonathan Jackson’s performances in this story. As an actor, he rises far above his cast members. I don’t believe there is a better soap actor anywhere. And, I think if any one of us were in this horrible position of your child dying and then to make the decision to donate his kidney to another child, would be excruchiating. So let’s just watch and see what keeps us hanging on to soaps….

Kelly
Kelly

Kathy, you have been drinking too much of that Jasam Juice hon, put it down and back away! You can make excuses for all the ways Sam endangered Jake (ie. watching him get kidnpapped and doing nothing, hiring thugs to hold him at gunpoint) and in the same breath make Liz out to be a horrid mother for looking away one second. Sorry but that happens dozens of times a day with every mother and by sheer luck and the grace of god nothing usually happens unless of course you are living in a soap opera! And oh by the way, Jason did love Liz and said so many times. He also asked her to marry him. I know many Jasam fans love deluding themselves into believing Liason were never in love but sorry they were! And one more thing, it was Jason’s idea FIRST to leave Jake when Michael got shot. Liz only agreed after Jake was kidnapped. So yes, Jason did decide to leave HIS son! Liz may wish she had shared Jake with Jason more now that he’s dead but it wasn’t her idea to walk away.

What a spew of hatred toward Gh. Actors must be doing a terrific job to rile the haters like this. I don’t know what planet you live, but in everyday life people get shot, kids get killed. Does anyone ever turn on the news and see what is going on around them. My friend’s stepdaughter, her friend and little boy were killed by a maniac. He cut up their bodies, put them in garbage bags and dropped them down a hollow tree. The only way he would tell where they were was to have the death penalty taken off the table. Compared to this GH seems tame to me.

eiwcakeff
eiwcakeff

It wasn’t a bad interview but his all sound the same and seriously jm is going to reevaluate his life–hello you had that chance already and the ‘mob life’ is the ‘good life’
I liked jm when I 1st started watching GH but he seems to be regressing in his thinking–maybe he needs to have a CAT scan on his brain. The mob stuff is interesting so I have no problem tuning him out.
I found it interesting that he would think PC’s most selfish person was a good relationship to be in–Carly is all about carly. Sam is just plain not interesting.
I’m not eager to see EW mooning over him again or Lucky Spencer let her move on -no kid there for them to remember they actually know each other.
As for the current s/l–rushed and redundant are the words that come to mind but all things considered the actors, especially Becky and JJ have done an outstanding job, with SBu giving a good supporting performance. LW has done a great enough job that I dislike carly even more, hope that’s what they were going for because it worked. I wanted to see more IR as well as lost characters. I hate that Jake had to be the one to live with knowing his biodad and now he’s dead–no other child should ever be given to jm he needs to live with that burden the rest of his mob up life.
People watch soaps to escape real life and there’s is no way to compare the two things mainly because RL will always throw you a curveball and soaps are pretty predictable.
Good job Michael thanks

Why the hell couldn’t Jason reevaluate his life for his first-born son? Really, are we supposed to buy this bs? Jason was a friggin, spineless loser where his first child was concerned. Now I’m to jump for joy cause he didn’t lift a finger to be with that child, but he’s ready to now, mere seconds after his first child’s death? Jason Morgan will alway be a loser. Poor Sam, your hell is just about to begin cause you can bet anytime, anything goes wrong with Jason’s next spawn, your ass will be to blame cause nothing can ever tarnish Jason. At least that’s what the writers wants you to believe. Thank GOD Jake never knew the creep that is Jason Morgan.

Great interview! Jake’s story and how it impacts Jason and Elizabeth is what brought me back to General Hospital after months of not watching. Steve Burton and Rebecca Herbst are doing an amazing job! I hope that Jake’s death will eventually lead to Jason and Elizabeth turning to each other to comfort each other and get through this, then lead them to rebuilding and being drawn back together. Something beautiful for them should come out of such a tragedy.

Well, the story has people talking. I’m not so sure it’s a good thing, but they’re talking. Notice how divided many are? Bringing up horrible and inconsistent writing for the sake of proving how the other woman is worse? How Jason either was forced by Elizabeth to leave or voluntarily became a deadbeat dad? Well, for whatever reason, Jason left and didn’t think of Jake more than a handful of times over the past 3 years. He spent time with every other child in PC, agonized over Michael to the point of obsession, but nary a thought when Elizabeth was in trouble. When Aiden was kidnapped, did Jason even ask if Jake was ok or if guards were needed? Yet now, Jason can watch the unsuccessful surgery, tell everyone Jake died and even have the nerve to request organ donation for Carly’s suddenly deathly I’ll daughter (Jason’s godchild who he spent more time with than his own bio-kid)? I’m glad Elizabeth smacked him. I hope she hit him hard enough to knock some sense back into the character I used to love.
The agenda with this story is so apparant it’s disgusting. After Elizabeth agreed to the donation, where did she go? We see Lucky. We see Jason. The story that will unfold is so easy to see. The direction of the show is crystal clear, at least to me. I’m sure we won’t even get to see a funeral because they’d have to either bring back Leslie, Audrey, Laura, Bobbie Sarah, etc or have some explanation why none of them would attend.
Unfortunately, I can see more viewers leaving after this story plays out. Such a shame GH resorts to short-sighted plot point storytelling. I used to love the story. Now I occassionally enjoy a scene or two.

Jason is going to re-evaluate his life? Well, if your son almost dying at birth along with his mother doesn’t pull your head out from under your arm pits then nothing will. How about when old Eddie Q. ran down Jake at the Carnival in 2009 right in front of Jason? How about when our little fire bug Cameron set Liz’s house on fire and Jake almost died? How about when Sam watched a crazy woman walk off with baby Jake and then hired armed thugs to point their guns at Liz, Cam and Jake? Jason is 4 1/2 years too late in re-evaluating his life which should have happened the day that Liz walked into his penthouse with the paternity papers and he never once asked to see the results!

Kermitklein
Kermitklein

Are you seriously going there with the year 2005. Where was Elizabeth? That’s called Chuck Pratt’s way of keeping Liason apart to go forth with JaSam. Like they didn’t interact at all in 2005 and it was done on purpose. Because they saw that Elizabeth interaction with Jason with Journey didn’t cause Journey to take off like they hope it would have. And don’t get me started with Jake kidnapping 2, the most contrived piece of crap ever where everyone was written out of character in order for Sam to look good. You can go back and tell by the dialogue. Elizabeth not knowing how loud gunfire is…Please. She’s been around gunfire. She’s even been shot before. Then on top of that Elizabeth and Lucky just going home after knowing that Sasha had just taken Jake after they encountered her at the PCPD. Elizabeth and Lucky, really…letting Sasha just go instead of following her. I think not. We’re talking about two people that went to Canada to get Emily back when Zander kidnapped her. We’re to now believe that they wouldn’t follow Sasha for Jake. GMAB on that one. And yes Sam has implied that she didn’t mind Jake dead. She compared her loss of her dead baby with the lost of Jake when Jake was kidnapped by Maureen in front of Elizabeth. Said that they were now the same. She hired two gunmen to hold guns on Jake, Elizabeth, and Cam in the park, not knowing what could possibly happen, not knowing if the gun could possibly go off. Sam only fessed up when she got caught. It’s not like she came out on her own and told anyone the bad things that she had done. And why should Elizabeth forgive Sam for what she has done because she hasn’t forgiven her. Her dialogue in 2010 tells you that when she asked Sam how was Jason able to forgive the unforgiveable. If Elizabeth is calling it unforgiveable that clearly says that she hasn’t forgiven Sam. And why would she? Like for example: would you forgive a child molester for molesting your child just because he protected your child from another child molester. So why would Elizabeth forgive a woman that endangered her child just because she saved him from someone else that endangered her child. That logic is just crazy to me. That Elizabeth should forgive Sam for all she’s done because she saved Jake. And I highly doubt Jason has really forgiven Sam. If bringing up what she did to Jake is still a loaded subject…per what she said to Dante…then that means she’s not 100% sure Jason has forgiven her and we aren’t either considering they NEVER talk about it. So if its still a loaded subject between them then it means that Jason hasn’t completely forgiven or forgotten it either. Because once things are forgiven, it stops being a loaded subject. As for Jason and Elizabeth’s friendship…really, she saved his life twice. Hid him from the… Read more »

I hate that the writers came up with this storyline about killing a child! They’ve already done the transplant story with Maxie, why repeat it again??
It was gut wrenching to watch and I applaud all the characters involved. It must have been one hell of a story to do.

Rachel

As I watch Jake dying I have to remind myself that it is just television and not real. However, who the hell wrote this crap??? Why did Jake have to die for Carly’s child? All this woman has done is cause trouble while dragging Jason around on a leash. Jason needs to grow a pair and cut her loose. Since this is just t.v. I think Jason and Liz should say no to Carly. Especially as Carly has always bad mouthed Liz. Carly needs to suffer.

Oh such a great storyline by far! I believe that Steve and all the actors are doing such an awesome job and their acting skills have proven to be quite impressive with this storyline. This is a wonderful interview with Steve. So looking forward what is going to come out of this tragedy for Jason and can not wait. I’m GH stumped that I wonder why would that be. Hmmm I guess I just enjoy seeing the great story lines and good amazing actors that are on GH of course.

I love how Guza/Frons/GH will finally have Jason eevaluate his life now that his son is dead. It shouldn’t have taken him this long to do that. It should have begun when Jake was first kidnapped or when he was kidnapped a second time or when he was injured at the carnival. This drivel is so agenda driven that it reeks. Of course, we are now to believe that Jason will want to have a replacement child with con artist ex girlfriend (who watched his son get kidnapped & hired 2 goons to accost them in the park). Really GH? Sam helping save Jake during the 2nd kidnapping was Guza/Frons’ way of white washing a truly unlikable & unrelatable character to the audience. Unfortunately its obvious that this is the direction GH will take, but let’s see how many viewers will be interested or care enough to remain to watch the aftermath & the results of this cheap knockoff of Claire Labine’s BJ/Maxie transplant story. The only thing worth talking about from this sloppily written & mediocre storyline is the stellar performances from Becky, JJ, Steve, Laura other than it was short sighted and lacking poignancy.

I think for me it appears like Jason is just having another bad day at the office. Burton isn’t really doing much more than making faces, blinking and staring which is the norm for him.

I know he can do better, but it’s been years since I have seen it.

Too bad. The writing is bad enough, the acting could have made it better and it did not.

cathy

I have to be honest. I was young when the BJ/Maxie story played and NO way is this story close. I just don’t feel for any of the characters, Not Jason, Liz, or Carly.I feel these characters caused their own problems. Jason hasn’t been the real parent only the biological parent. If he was he would have given up the mob. Carly is acting like a selfish person. Of course Joss is her daughter but she shouldn’t be above other children. Glad Jax yelled at her. Liz in the promo sayng who did this. How about you Liz for not paying attention to your child. Don’t get me wrong things happen but Liz is ready to blame someone and not blame herself. The scenes are just scenes and the actors going through motions. The story is disjointed and thrown together. JMO

eiwcakeff
eiwcakeff

I agree in part with this but from what i’ve seen EW does blame herself–a parent will always blame themselves in a case of this nature. He got away from her that happens all the time and is probably the most realistic thing about this s/l. What would we think if she didn’t want to know who killed her child, we’d really want to lynch her then. I do agree the s/l id disjinted and thrown together.

photohog4
photohog4

We’ve all seen Steve shed tears during emotional scenes. Given the lightning speed at which this ‘story’ is being told, I guess I should be impressed, but I’m not. I can’t imagine why anyone thinks this redux ( a poor one at that) is anything more than a stepping stone to the real goal, a baby for Jason and Sam, without any guilt for Jason. Unfortunately, Jake didn’t need to die for that. Jason’s been living quite guilt free for years while paying more attention to other peoples children than he did to his own son. One more wouldn’t have shamed him.

Honestly, I resent just how much focus is being placed on Jason’s POV considering how little time he’s spent with Jake. Yet just about every segment for the last 2 episodes of GH has ended with the focus AND CAMERA on Jason’s mug. Am I really supposed to be feeling sorry for the man who unfortunately can’t continue CHOOSING not to know his son? Steve brought the same forlorn expression and stance to his scenes as he usually does. No more, no less. One thing that was present, as usual, was Jason’s ceaseless tendency to put Carly’s needs and desires first. At if that hasn’t cost him enough in his life.

One thing I would be curious to know is how many takes were needed for that interaction between Liz/Jason where she slapped him? I thought it was GLORIOUS and long overdue. I imagine this entire story will be spent having people console and comfort that flat-leaver for what he’s lost. I’m extremely glad that at least for a moment or two, Liz didn’t drink the Kool-Aid and she told him what he could do with his request. The sad thing is she’ll probably apologize to him later in the week.

Finally, I would LOVE to see a different Liz out of all of this. I’m so sick and tired of her being portrayed as the wounded bird on this show, I think I might vomit. And if the writers are expecting me to champion a Liz/Lucky reunion they’ve got another thing coming. There’s no way on Earth I would want her to go back to Lucky or the Spencers after the way they’ve treated her in the last 2 years. In fact, I think they should be next on her list of people to smack, right behind Carly and Sam. But I digress. I want Liz strong and independent. I’m SO DONE with her always being the one to apologize or compromise or sacrifice when no one else ever does. I think Becky/Liz should get a hair trim, dye it a bit darker and start life anew as Liz “I Don’t Take Any BS” Webber.

I might actually start watching the show again.

I think that there is a pretty long line forming to smack “poor pitiful me” Liz’s face: The Spencer’s have every right to treat Liz like shit, She has spent 80% of her relationship with Lucky lying-my family would have done a lot worse by now. Sam, cuz Liz is always sniffin around Jason, Carly, just cuz she sees Liz for who she really is and hell Jason, he just needs to smack her back into reality! Elizabeth is a hot mess, she can not make any relationship work! Long live Jasam!

photohog4

Liz has spent nearly half her adult life protecting that druggie, candy-striper banging, come dead-beat dad. She lied about Jake to keep Lucky from going back to licking the inside of a pill bottle. I wish she HAD told him the truth back then. Maybe he’d have OD’d and I wouldn’t have to be concerned with his loser self showing back up, claiming how much he loves his boys. Carly saw Liz as the man who stole Jason from her. When the truth is Carly saw Liz dancing with Jason (because of dead Lucky) and Carly went and did what she does best….she screwed some other man to make herself feel better. Jason took one look at how vindictive and spiteful she was and ran for the hills. And Sam sniffed around Sonny while he was still with Carly years ago. Actually she did more than sniff….she got herself knocked up too. Maybe Liz took her cues from her. BTW…..how’s that Long Live JaSam anthem working for you?

I’m so sad Elizabeth and Jason and Lucky lost Jake. Too bad Edward never knew he had a grandson. I’m sure this death will bring Jason/Elizabeth/Lucky and the Spencers closer together.
I’m so happy GH gave Rebecca Herbst back her job, she’s been so amazing. I haven’t stopped crying for days. Elizabeth is just breaking my heart in every scene.
Jason screwed up. He should have been there for his son. He was there for his best friends, for Their kids, why not secretly for Jake. He didn’t even try to work things out. Instead he took Sam back after she terrorized his kid with goons and let Jake get kidnapped by a crazy lady.
GH has ruined Jason over the years.
I hope Jason ends up with Brenda and helps her raise her son. Their cute together.

The past week has solidified what I have always said about Steve Burton. He is absolutely the best actor who acts without any words. That’s 100% right on…no matter what Liz said, Jason chose to walk away. He could have known his child and spent time with him. He was always just too busy running after and protecting others. Jake was a beautiful and precious little boy who Jason will never ever know, and I hope this bothers him on a daily basis until the day he closes his eyes! And I swear, Jake better not have died in vain, so that Jason and Sam could have a child together. That would turn so many stomachs, and GH would definitely lose fans and ratings.

i think it really sucks that they had to kill off little jake

All the actors has done a great job with this story Jason wanted Jake to be in his moms life he asked liz she told him no. and even when they was sneaking around she never brought jake to be with him so if she really wanted jake in jason’s life everytime they met jake should have been there. Sam always felt jason would be a great father even though he lied to her for liz to keep it a secret when jason had surgery and manny broke in. if liz was the love of his life than why wasn’t she in his vision Robin, Carly and Sam was in his thought not liz. Jason was not in love with liz he cared for her because of his love for his son Jake. and yes jason took sam back after she told everyone how sorry she was for what she did to jake and cam and liz and he forgave her so just git over that and move on.great acting on all the stars. and lucky was and always will be liz sole mate from when they first got together because how many men would still be by your side after lying about jake and then sleeping with your brother. lucky is all man and will always love liz.

I completely disagree. I’ve been watching the old clips of Jason & Liz when they 1st became friends. Just after Lucky “died”. They began falling in love then, all puppy-dog looks and longing. Jason laughed with her so naturally that there was a tender side rarely seen. Even AFTER Lucky came back, when she hid Jason…they LOVED each other. She stayed with Lucky from pressure and old memories. She thought he was the same guy. He NEVER was. In fact, until Jonathan Jackson came back to play him, he was an abusive jerk. Never mind that he started fights with Jason because he was jealous, he then got hooked on drugs & had an affair with Maxie. When they decided to stay together and raise Jake, all he did was B*itch & moan about how she did him wrong. EXCUSE ME! Was this NOT the same man who shoved his pregnant wife to the floor?? WHILE DRUNK/ON DRUGS! No matter what, we can’t go back & say Jason & Liz NEVER loved each other, though the writers have seemed to try to gloss over quite a few of the Jason & Liz facts from so long ago. She has always protected him & been there. How many times have they saved each others lives, whether by just talking and listening or by actually tending to gunshots and what not. She even encouraged him to get back together with Sam. Their night together was years in the making. While it would have been wonderful for them to get together THEN, TPTB didn’t let it happen. He could have encouraged her to give up nursing and do her art again, something that made Liz who she was. And Jason would simple have gone on to protect her the way he ALWAYS did. All the comments about where was she/he when this happened in the others lives? WELL, ask TPTB! As for Sam, she needs a GREAT romance, just NOT with Jason. The Jason I remember would NEVER have forgiven her for what she did, not only to Jake but to the mother of his child…he had to lose his memory to fall back in love with her! BOTH Jason & Liz let too many OTHER ppl influence what they were going to do where Jake was concerned. Sonny, for one, should have had her back after all she has hidden for HIM! Carly, I think. I hope can come around and form a bond with Liz after what Liz did for her. Let’s get real. The only one who really had the right to choose about organ donation was Liz. Lucky wasn’t a good father the the 1st yr, & Jason gave his child up THINKING he would be protecting him because of how Michael was starting to act (wanting to break kneecaps after Leticia was killed), but he longed for him. To say he ONLY wanted to be with Liz because of Jake is a flat out fabrication of a certain… Read more »

I agree, I hate Elizabeth, but she really missed he boat when she messed things up with Lucky. He loved her so completely, more than she ever deserved, hell he took on two kids that weren’t even his. Liz is an idiot, I hope she ends up all alone!

I thought the acting was suburb with all the actors.
As I recall Jason gave up all rights to Jake because of his mob connections. But he did look after him from a distance and the scene with Jason and Jake playing with the motor cycle toy, in the penthouse, really played into Jason keeping the toy. Was sad to lose Jake, but hopefully this will speed the story line to end. Rest in peace.

what??!!! this jake story is RIDICULOUS. killing kids is a stunt AND it’s been done before in a much more compelling way by claire labine in the 90’s with bj’s heart. vanessa marcil had it in her contract to take a short break in march — and this was guza’s desperate attempt to keep ratings after a 3-year high with the brenda & sonny wedding. the only good acting, in my opinion, was jonathan jackson and tony geary. becky herbst was solid, but not as emmy-worthy as JJ and AG. steve and laura were simply unconvincing in my opinion.

please guza, don’t pull stunts! instead, write brenda & sonny a great, sexy honeymood and married life s/l!!

GH’s Vinessa Antoine Lands Primetime Series Will Make Canadian TV History!

Fantastic news for General Hospital favorite, Vinessa Antoine (Jordan)! The talented actress had landed the leading role in the primetime Canadian series, Diggstown!

The legal drama is scheduled to air this fall.  In Diggstown, Antoine will play Marcie Diggs, a top corporate lawyer who decides to dedicate herself to a legal aid office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

This casting news will make Vinessa a part of Canadian TV history as the first Black Canadian actress to star in a prime-time drama on legacy network television, CBC.

Antoine spoke to the Toronto Star about her starring role, “When I first read the script I was really attracted to the notion that she was a corporate lawyer and she believed in the system. And when that crashed for her, life nudged her to do something extraordinary. And because I’m a woman of color, so many things connected. She’s complex, not stereotypical, and that’s refreshing.”

However as suspected, and according to the Toronto Star: “General Hospital fans will not be happy to learn that Antoine, who has been with the show since 2014, will no longer be a series regular when she starts shooting Diggstown in August.”

So, excited to hear Vinessa has been cast in a leading primetime series?  Comment below!

Dominic Zamprogna Speaks Out On His Decision To Leave GH, His Final Scenes With Emme Rylan & How Dante Exited The Canvas

A few weeks ago, General Hospital fans watched as one of the series beloved stars, Dominic Zamprogna (Dante) exited the show in scenes opposite his longtime on-screen love interest, Emme Rylan (Lulu).  For nine years, Zamprogna brought authenticity, emotion, and heart to the son of Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Olivia Falconeri (Lisa LoCicero) to life.  While Dante’s journey started out with a bang, literally (thanks, Sonny!), over the years it appeared he was taking a backseat in meatier storylines.  All the while, Dante and Lulu remained one of the more popular duos with the viewers.

After much reflection, Zamprogna decided it was time for him to walk away from a place that became his second home.  His desire now shifted to play different characters in different projects, but it was not without taking many things into account with his life-changing decision.

Michael Fairman TV talked with Dominic to glean more insight into: if there was anything GH could have done to make him sign on the dotted line again, what went down to make those final scenes seem so rushed, how it was to say goodbye to his co-workers in front of the camera and behind the scenes, if he would consider a return at some point, and how would he feel if GH now planned on recasting Dante, and much more.

For us; we recall meeting Dominic for the first times just six months into his time at General Hospital for our first interview together.  We were instantly struck by his sincerity, humor, and his eagerness to learn from some of the best in the business.  Now exiting as a “soap vet“, per se, it is a full-circle moment that we had the time to conclude his GH journey with this conversation.  Here’s what Dom had to say about it all.

What were the factors that contributed to your decision to exit GH?  Was there a pivotal moment where you were feeling, and recognizing, that you were underutilized that you felt you needed to make a change?

DOMINIC:  When you named me the “Most Underutilized Actor of 2017!” (Laughs) Well, my plan was never to stay forever.  But half-way through my second contract,  Emme Rylan (Lulu) and I were approached by our producer on set, who said words to the effect of: you guys have been on the sideline, time to get you into the game.  That led to the Dante cheating storyline, which gave us story for about a year … which was great!  But as that ended, so did any subsequent storylines, it seemed.  In the year that followed, I started entertaining thoughts of leaving.  By the next year, I started talking about it with my wife, Linda, who had started to notice that maybe I wasn’t happy anymore, and I wasn’t.  That’s not a good feeling, especially if you’re bringing that energy home with you.  Then, I made the mistake of going on social media, which is a terrible place to go sometimes.  But fans were saying the same sort of things I was feeling.  Was it all due to story or lack-thereof?  No.  I was starting to crave playing other roles, and that’s hard to do when you’re under contract.

Were discussions even had with Frank Valentini (executive producer, GH) and the powers-that-be about your feelings of dissatisfaction over not being utilized more in storylines?

DOMINIC:  The discussions happened late.  Not until the negotiation process, actually.  I’m no squeaky wheel I guess, but I also don’t feel it’s in my job description to be one.  I did put out a few ideas here and there, but they didn’t happen.  I know other actors have tried the same and it didn’t lead to anything for them, either.  I was a creation of Bob Guza (former head writer, GH), and maybe I was spoiled by the amount of great writing I received while he was there.

There had to be some sadness in walking away from GH.

DOMINIC:  Oh yeah… it was sad.  I built that character, and now here I was walking away from it, and essentially my second family.  That’s been the hardest part.  Lifelong friendships were made, and memories.  However, it’s been over a month and a half since I’ve been at GH and I feel happy.  I’ve been up in Canada shooting Tin Star, which has been a great experience.  I’ve stayed in touch with everybody and I miss everybody, in fact, I just spoke to Mo (Maurice Benard) yesterday, and I’m in class with Emme (she won’t leave me alone).  But, I feel like I made the right choice for me at this moment.

To clarify; were you actually trying to work out a deal to stay put, but both sides just could not hammer things out to a satisfactory conclusion?

DOMINIC:  We did try to work out a deal.  After more talks and conversations, I felt maybe we were going to get things done.  I was being told things would change and maybe shift things in the direction we wanted to go.  But at the end of the day, it’s gotta be in writing.  I feel like I’d been told similar things in the past which hadn’t come to fruition.  I was also reminded that it was me who needed to sign my name on that dotted line and live with that decision, and I chose not to do so.

If someone would have said to you: “We have an “A” story for you, and you are going to be driving it,” would you have been more apt to stay?

DOMINIC:  There was talk about us sitting down and talking about storylines, but that didn’t end up happening, not sure why.  And even if it did, I don’t know that it would’ve changed my mind about leaving, anyway.   But just to be clear: I have no anger towards anybody.  It’s all a business at the end of the day.  Both sides did what they felt was right.  For me, I just felt this chapter had come to an end.

Photo: ABC

When, and how did you tell on-screen scene partner, Emme Rylan that you were leaving?  Was she happy for you and your decision?

DOMINIC:  Emme knew really early on.  Once January rolled around I was like: “I have been thinking for the last six to nine months that I am going to go.”   I wanted her to know, because we have been a couple for five years on the show.  Emme was very happy for me.  I went, “Wait a minute!  Don’t be this happy.  I’m leaving.” (Laughing)

What happened when you told your on-screen mom, Lisa LoCicero ?

DOMINIC:  She was sad, but she is also said, “You’re in your prime, go see what’s out there!”   I wouldn’t have done this move if I did not get support at home.  My wife is the rock and the one that makes this household go.  Some things outside the show were starting to happen; I had a nice screen-test for a pilot, and then I booked these four episodes of Tin Star.  When you have choices in life; you have power and control over your future.  I think Emme and Lisa as actors realized that.  That’s what made them happy for me … for the future.  The last nine years were exciting.  However, when you can have a little bit more say in what you are doing on a day to day basis, that is empowering.  So, in saying, “no” to something, and saying, “Thank you, but that’s not what I am looking for right now,” that can feel good.

It was a shame that through all the regimes that they rarely wrote any scenes between Dante and his father, Sonny.  What was Maurice Benard’s reaction when you told him you were leaving?

DOMINIC:  It has been pretty publicized that he and I were dissatisfied at the lack of  storyline, or scenes together.  Maurice asked the powers-that-be, “Why aren’t we working together more?”  We never had a clear answer as to why.  He didn’t know from one day to the next what was happening with my contract talks.  Mo saw me smiling one day and asked, “So does that smile mean you’re staying?”  And I said, “No, that smile is because I’m leaving.” (Laughs)  I said that more to mess with him, and make him sad.  He said, “As long as you are good financially, then I am all for anybody getting out of here and seeing what else is out there.” Really, Mo talks people into leaving so he can get more screen-time. (Laughs)

Let’s talk about the final airshow, and the story that came out of left field to facilitate your exit.  Was that written quickly to accommodate a shooting schedule or contract completion?  It felt rushed to the viewing audience.

DOMINIC:  Left field is right!  I still had a week and a half left of work when they found out I wasn’t going to re-sign, and within twelve hours I had six exit scenes written.  So, it wasn’t done to facilitate anything but a set (Lante’s house), I think.  My final tape date was May 18th, and Emme and I had scenes on the Wednesday or Thursday before that.  I guess they wanted my last scenes that aired to be with Emme, and that might have been the only scheduling day that worked for the set and the actors, and maybe that’s also why it felt so rushed.  All I could assume is that they didn’t think I was really going to leave so they didn’t plan for it, or they chose to protect themselves in this way, by not making a big deal about it.  I had another week of scenes in the PCPD with Chase (Josh Swickard) and Michael (Chad Duell) that was shot afterward.  But they had nothing to do with Dante’s “secret mission!”

I thought, “Wait!  Is that it?  Is this Dominic’s final show?  Dante doesn’t say goodbye to his mother… his father … or his son, Rocco?

DOMINIC:  Yeah, that was tough for me.  After 9 years you think you’re going to get a little bit better of a send off.   You also, hope they’re going to honor the character.  Dante wouldn’t leave to go to the 7-eleven without saying goodbye to his mother and kids.   Maurice and I talked about that.  He said, “I guess, they don’t want people to feel really sad.  You and me doing some goodbye scenes, people are going to be devastated.”   I agree with that.  However, I also think it’s a soap and that’s what fans want … good, ole drama.  I would have loved to have had scenes with Sonny, Olivia, and Dante’s kids, but when you make a decision like this, how you leave on-air is not up to you.  Both parties are going to handle it how it’s best for them.   I was very grateful they gave Emme and I something to seek our teeth into.

They were very sad scenes.  You are one of those actors that can take the material and connect with it while delivering it in a very subtle and heartfelt way.  How was Emme after your final scenes?

DOMINIC:  She was kind of crying the whole time, going “Damn you! Damn you.”   I was having fun with it, because I love making Emme cry.  It’s not a very difficult thing to do.  (Laughs).  We were both pretty teary-eyed, actually.  Then, when we finished the scenes and I looked over and I saw how upset the crew was, that’s what really got me.  Barbara, one of the camera operators actually jokingly apologized; suggesting that if my last shot was blurry it was my fault!  As an actor, when you make the crew feel something it kind of gives you some extra good feels. That was always the best feeling, talking to Craig (our stage manager), or Donna (head of makeup department) after a scene to get the honest truth on how you did.  I’ll miss them.

Viewers, watching Dante have this flashback about the guy who was responsible for Lulu going overboard the Haunted Star a few years ago, probably needed a moment to connect the dots.  Some viewers were going, “What?  Dante is going after the guy that tried to drown Lulu from two years ago?”

DOMINIC:  When I read that in the script even I went, “What?” Who’s that?”  I had no idea, either. (Laughs)

Then there was this:  Dante was so hard on Lulu for her pursuing her dream as a journalist and how it inadvertently got Nathan killed.  Then all of a sudden in your final scenes, Dante has a line to Lulu in which he says something to the effect of: I understand now – you got to do, what you got to do.  In story, prior to these scenes it was leaning more towards Dante and Lulu were going to break-up over what had recently transpired.

DOMINIC:  Which, who knows?  If Dante had stayed in Port Charles it could have been the direction they were going in.  It certainly looked like they were building toward conflict, conflict, conflict, but with me leaving it was much sweeter to leave on the note that we left on, instead of Dante leaving, because he can’t deal with being around Lulu. This all leads me to believe that they didn’t want to do anything too permanent to give them time to make the proper decisions.

Courtesy/ABC

What was the last day of shooting like for you?  Was it hard to get through?

DOMINIC:  It felt like a regular day, and my final scenes were up towards the end of the tape day. They had a cake afterwards.  Frank briefly spoke and introduced Maurice; who said a bunch of sweet words.  That meant a lot to me.  I said “goodbye” to everybody and took some photos, and that was it.  I already had my room packed up.  Once you’re ready to go, you’re ready to go.  Afterwards, I went out with Ryan Paevey (Ex-Nathan) and Jeffrey Vincent Parise (Ex-Carlos) for some beers and wings at the bar down the street.  It wasn’t until everybody came back after a two-week break that it felt real, because then I was receiving text messages from people saying, “We’re back.  Why the hell aren’t you here?”

The door has been left open for Dante to return.  Would you ever come back?

DOMINIC:  Of course, at some point.  But it might not be my choice, they might recast.  They told me they won’t, but who knows what’ll be done.  Do I think you can just recast a role?  No, I think it’s always a tough sell, but they’ve done it with bigger names/characters than mine.  I would be a little surprised, only because there hasn’t been much story for Dante in the last three years.  For me, as of now, I’ve moved on, and I’m very happy with my decision and my life.  It’s sad in other respects, don’t get me wrong.  I’ve read things that people have said on Twitter, and I want everyone to know I’ve seen it all and it means a lot to me.  People have been beautiful to me.  I’m truly overwhelmed by the love.  I thought there would be more of, “Who cares?” when fans found out I left.   I must have done something right during the years I was at GH.

Did you think when you made the decision to leave they would kill-off Dante?

DOMINIC:  No, not at all.  I don’t think killing off Dante would be a good idea, especially after they killed Nathan, and also because of the climate we live in with police involved shootings and violence, in general.  In a perfect world as an actor, you crave the opportunity to have one last moment with the other characters that have been important to your character over the years.  That’s all I would have wanted for myself, and Dante.  I’ll take what I got though.  It was extremely meaningful because of what Emme and I had and built.  I feel we got to the heart and soul of those two characters in a pretty short amount of time in our scenes.

Courtesy/ABC

Speaking of Nathan, I think thus far those funeral scenes, which you were wonderful in, and the story arc revolving around his death, are GH’s best bet for an Emmy in the Drama Series category next year.

DOMINIC:  I agree.  It was so well-done.  We’d all would like to go out like that!  Tragic, but it made for great TV and great soap.  It was phenomenally well-acted across the board.  Lots of Emmy reel stuff for Michelle Stafford (Nina) and Kirsten Storms (Maxie), and Kathleen Gati (Liesl), and hopefully for our directors and crew, also.  They did an amazing job bringing that to life.

This now leaves Josh Swickard as the lone cop now by default on GH.   he PCPD is notorious for being the worst cop shop in the history of soaps! (Laughs) They can’t ever solve a crime.

DOMINIC: (Laughs) I know!  What is Josh is going to do?   Maybe between Chase and Jordan (Vienssa Antoine) they will solve crimes.  Maybe, they’ll bring on a new cop.  Josh is a great guy and I enjoyed working with him.  At the beginning, we had that contentious relationship between the two guys.  That would’ve been fun if it lasted longer, where they had this continual real dislike for one another.  Who knows?  With Dante gone, maybe they will start solving some crimes! (Laughs) Maybe now the PCPD will be the greatest police unit in the USA.

Courtesy/ABC

Over your nine years at GH, would you still consider that your best storyline was coming on to the show and then having Sonny shoot Dante, only for it to turn out that he just shot his own son?

DOMINIC:  Yes, I think you have to.  That was my intro.  They had this story planned eight months before they even cast the role.  To get to that moment, was a classic soap cliffhanger.  I grew up watching soap operas with my grandparents, and if they had been alive for that scene they would have lost it, because it was something that ‘old school’ soap fans would really dig.  For me, doing that story felt so special.  ABC also pumped it with the promotion, and the promos, and the TV spots, and amped it up.  I didn’t feel it disappointed.  It was actually the audition scene that I had to perform to get the part!  Then six months later you get to say these lines that got you the part, and you hope you don’t whiff on the softball.

While putting together and producing the GH 55th anniversary tribute package for this year’s Daytime Emmys, I included that moment between Sonny and Dante.  I remember watching the complete scene before editing it and the dialog was so good.  It still holds up to this day.

DOMINIC:  My manager was at the Emmys that night, and said what a great moment that was.  I meant to thank you for that, because I really appreciated it being in there.

Courtesy/ABC

Are there any other scenes that come to mind that you are most proud of?

DOMINIC:  I also really loved the scenes with Max Gail (Mike). He is a special guy.  There was so much in our scenes; where Dante finds him with Avery in the stables.  Those moments are going to stick with me for a long time.

On June 28th, the airdate of your last episode, you posted a tweet to the fans that read: “The love you guys have given me over the years and continue to give is overwhelming.  It is I that must thank YOU!”  I thought that was extremely touching and very appreciated by the fans.

DOMINIC:  I was thinking, “Man, I have to thank you, because I would not legitimately be here if you hadn’t liked this guy, Dante.”  It was bringing tears to my eyes reading what people were saying, and seeing how much love I was receiving.

Tell me about your role in the British-Canadian production of Tin Star?

DOMINIC:  It’s a recurring role,  I’ve been working on it since March.  It’s something very different from what I’ve been doing the last 9 years.  Can’t give much away, but I play a hired gun type of guy.  There are some great scenes and moments, and I was lucky enough to work with Christina Hendricks, John Lynch, and the legend, Tim Roth.

Do you feel now that you have had some time away now from GH, and have been playing another role, that the thought of playing Dante for you at this point is like: “Been there. Done that?”

DOMINIC:  I would never say Dante is done forever.  Right now for me, he is.  They left it open, hopefully they left it open for me, but every actor hopes that.  We want our cake and to eat it too!  I want to leave right now, but I want you to want me to come back some day.  No one wants their role to be recast.  But it’s an important character, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see.  Who knows what the future holds.  I left on good terms.  Just so everyone knows; I didn’t spring something on GH on the last day of my contract.  It’s important that I let people know that I didn’t just wake up one day and say, “See ya”.  This also wasn’t about money.  Sure, we want to be paid what we believe we’re worth.  But this in no way was about me asking for the moon, or I was going to leave.  It was a very, very difficult decision.

So, what do you think about how GH wrapped up Dante’s story for Dominic’s exit? Would you like him to return to GH sooner than later?  Do you think the role of Dante was problematic to write for?  What were your favorite scenes of Dom’s during his time at GH?
