We Love Soaps countdown of the 50 Greatest Soap Actresses of All Time is now complete when it was revealed this morning that The Bold and the Beautiful’s Susan Flannery (Stephanie) was in at the number one slot!  The panel including: Damon Jacobs, Mimi Torchin, Roger Newcomb, Marlena De LaCroix and a host of other soap pundits in a point- voting system gave the four-time Daytime Emmy winner top honors.   Flannery’s legendary career started with her first Daytime Emmy wining performance as Laura Horton on Days of our Lives, and later she returned to daytime in the late 1980’s, with the then new soap, B&B as the matriarch of the Forrester clan, Stephanie.

As the results were posted over the last few days, here were the runner-ups to Flannery.  Tough choices to make between all these ladies!  In at number two, Guiding Light’s Kim Zimmer, and at number three, One Life to Live’s Erika Slezak.  In the fourth spot, Another World, Texas and GL legend, Beverlee McKinsey, and rounding out the top five, OLTL’s, Dorian, Robin Strasser.

Given her remarkable run as B&B’s cornerstone, a strong argument can indeed be made for Flannery at #1. In centrality to a soap’s success, no other actress can match Flannery over the last quarter century. And she is perhaps the only remaining “diva” who did top-tier work (DOOL) in the 1960’s. But any such list that actually includes Sarah Felder and Patricia Pease over, say, Ruth Warrick or Eileen Fulton cannot be taken seriously. Was Felder’s brief stint at RH really that significant?
