Susan Lucci on ‘All My Children’ Cancellation: ‘It Felt Like a Horrible Divorce – One That I Didn’t See Coming’
Tuesday, February 3 marks the nationwide release of La Lucci, the second memoir from All My Children and daytime icon, Susan Lucci (ex-Erica Kane, All My Children).
Susan has been a major press tour including launch day visits on: Good Morning America, Live with Kelly and Mark (her former AMC castmates) and her special livestream and in attendance event at New York City’s 92Y with host Joan Lunden.
The follow up to her 2011 All My Life, Susan’s follow-up memoir touches upon the heartbreak of losing her beloved husband and manager, Helmut Huber, and her struggles to move on with her life after such a profound loss, her own medical battles with heart issues and, of course more reflections of life post-All My Children.

When visiting with Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley) and Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo) on Live with Kelly and Mark, they discussed the cancellation of All My Children in 2011 thanks to then ABC Daytime President Brian Frons, who kicked the show to the curb, along with One Life to Live, in favor of The Chew and The Revolution, respectively.
Ripa said, she was “crushed,”at learning the news that beloved soap created by Agnes Nixon was going off the ABC television Network. Susan shared, “I was too. Crushed, and it felt like a bad divorce that I didn’t see coming.”
In her new book, Susan said of the day she spoke with Brian Frons on the decision to cancel All My Children, “He said, without batting an eyelash, because it was 40% less to produce a food show. And he looked very proud of himself.”
Sadly at that time, Susan had relocated to Los Angeles from New York to help the show in its final years, when to cut costs All My Children was being taped at Andrita Studios. She notes her memoir, “I had been playing Erica my whole adult life and I didn’t know – how will it be to walk around now? I’m not Erica anymore and don’t play Erica anymore. Will I ever work again?”
Check out two clips from today’s ‘Live’ with Susan and a video from Susan sharing insight of her memoir below. You can now order La Lucci via Amazon, Barnes and Noble and find it at bookstores everywhere.
So, what do you think about Susan’s sentiments on the cancellation of All My Children after playing Erica Kane for 41 years? Would you agree? Are you looking forward to reading La Lucci? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
Please bring Susan Lucci/Erica Kane/All My Children back to the loyal viewers who miss the show and cast!
I wonder after seeing the multiple failed attempts to replace AMC and OLTL and with the success soaps have had in streaming (Hulu) would Brian Frons make the same decision today? Instead of cancelling the shows would it not have been better to drastically reduce the casts and build the soaps around a few core characters? Hindsight is always 20/20.
Brian Frons made a mistake. Broadcast networks seem not to want to thrive. There is something about mass media that is important, vital, and special. Daytime drama is more interesting than recycled cooking shows, repetitive court shows, another hour of news/infotainment. Where are the game shows? Daytime could be vibrant. The Brian Fronses decided against that vibrancy, not I. Seemed the cancel button was easier than problem solving or trying new directions.

Mark Consuelos Celebrates Kelly Ripa’s 56th Birthday on ‘Live,’ But Remember When Wendy Williams Outed the Couple as Married Before Anyone at ‘All My Children’ Knew?

On the Friday, October 2 episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, the morning talk show marked the 56th birthday of Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley Vaughan Santos, All My Children).
During the opening segment, Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo Santos, All My Children) humorously comparing his wife to both Gandhi and Groucho Marx, reflecting on both her comedic ability and peaceful ways.
Later, they went on to discuss the origins of her name and the most popular picks to name babies back in the year she was born, 1970. They were Kimberly, Lisa, and Jennifer for girls and Michael, David, and James for the boys.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Ripa recalled that she learned she was almost named Kim. However, their neighbors at the time had two daughters Kelly and Kim, which is what her parents wanted to call them, but they settled on Kelly and and her younger sister, Linda.
At the conclusion of the episode, Mark rolled out a huge cake for his wife. It was, “Happy birthday from all of us here at Live and at home.” Next, he cut the cake, and Ripa grabbed his face and gave him a “thank you” kiss.

KELLY AND MARK TRIED TO KEEP THEIR VEGAS WEDDING ON THE DOWN LOW
All of this brings back memories of how Kelly and Mark’s Las Vegas wedding ceremony went public in 1996 while the two were still on All My Children playing Mateo Santos and Hayley Vaughan. In essence, they were outed by then radio host Wendy Williams! They discussed it on the talk show back in 2024.
In fact, the duo hid their marriage from their All My Children castmates for months, until they found out Williams got wind of the nuptials and spread the intel on the airwaves.
The two recalled their secret wedding on a 2024 episode of Live! “We’d eloped. It’d been a few months at that point. We’d been married for three months, nobody at All My Children knew we were even dating, much less married to each other. We’re brushing our teeth and we’ve got Wendy Williams’ radio show on. We’re listening, and she’s like, ‘I’ve got celebrity dish!”
EYEWITNESS
Next Ripa continued, “The celebrities,’ I guess they had a broad use of the term back then, was the fact that ‘two soap stars from All My Children, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos eloped in Las Vegas.’ There was this eyewitness that worked in the Clark County courthouse that said we eloped, and the news broke, and we had to tell everybody we were married.”
Live With Kelly and Mark airs weekdays in syndication. Check your local listings for times in your area.
Share your birthday wishes for Kelly in the comment section, and let us know your thoughts on how Wendy Williams broadcast the news, unbeknownst to the All My Children newlyweds, that they tied the knot in Vegas? Check out Mark and the ‘Live’ studio audience singing ‘happy birthday’ to Kelly in the post below.
