Tamara Tunie (ex-Jessica – As the World Turns) stars as Anita Dupree, matriarch of the family. A famous singer back in the day, Anita worked hard for her success, and raised two daughters with her now-retired senator husband. But underneath her glamorous and refined exterior is a fierceness she gained from her humble beginnings in Chicago. The actress is also known for her role a medical examiner Dr. Melinda Warner on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Tunie has also held recurring roles on shows including Blue Bloods sand The Good Wife.

Daphne Duplaix (ex-Rachel, One Life to Live, ex-Valerie, Passions), stars as Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson, daughter of Anita, and Dani’s sister, Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson is a high-achieving and competitive philanthropist and psychiatrist, and exudes warmth, empathy and compassion. Nicole’s success in life extends to her marriage to her surgeon husband. She has the perfect life … from the outside.

Karla Mosley (ex-Maya, The Bold and the Beautiful and ex-Christina, Guiding Light), stars as Dani Dupree, Anita’s other daughter, and a former model turned momager who gave up her career for love. Dani was the Dupree family wild child. Free-spirited, headstrong and uninhibited, she dropped out of school to pursue a high-flying modeling career and she has always marched to the beat of her own drum.

Beyond The Gates is set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington D.C., and in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States. Here you’ll find a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those that live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have “made it” and those who haven’t are all trying to navigate life … and some with more grace than others.

Michele Val Jean is the series creator, executive producer and showrunner alongside executive producers Sheila Ducksworth, Robert Guza Jr., Julie Carruthers, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson, Kimberly Doebereiner and Anna Saalfeld.

I’m happy for Karla because she was underused and let go from B&B without reason!

Everybody on that show ends up being abused just dropped never to be heard from again. You are idiot if you are an actor and go to work for this guy. He is a train wreck

I will definitely be watching since Tamara Tunie is part of the cast. I have always enjoyed her acting, everything I have ever seen her in, 100%

I’m so excited!!! I CANNOT WAIT!!!

Interesting to see their leading men were all white. It seems then and now the only way a black actress could be in A storyline was to be paired with white actors. There are some exceptions like Angie & Jessie & Dru & Neil. It’s not like it doesn’t happen in real life but it occurred to me after seeing the pictures. I am curious though. Has there ever been a successful/popular black man/white woman couple on a daytime soap? I honestly can’t recall.

BTW! I like the new title. It sounds way more soapy than just The Gates.

I agree with all of what you wrote. Jamaal and Allison were a black male/white female pairing that was pretty popular but they were the only one.

They weren’t/aren’t supercouples, but I thought of Alexis Davis and Shawn Butler on GH and Devon and Abby on Y&R. Also, wasn’t Neil paired with Ashley for a while after Dru?

Neil was also with Victoria years ago, ready to be the papa of her baby if necessary.

If Tamara Tunie is the matriarch of this show, it’s already golden! She is a queen!

Truly excited about this! But is Tamara old enough to be their mother? I will be watching!

Tamara is 65 – the ideal age for the matriarch role. Both Daphne & Karla are in their 40s.

Dream casting would have Leslie Uggams as a guest role as Tamara’s mother.

I am definitely looking forward to giving this new show a try. I’m happy to see one of the former Rachels from One Life to Live, Daphnee Duplaix, among the cast.

Thank God they changed the title and love me some Tamara Tunie Bouquett

DITTO!!!!

Tamara Tunie was a key reason I loved As the World Turns. What a wonderful choice to lead this exciting new project. I am familiar with Karla Mosley who always rose above the B&B material she received. I cannot wait to see Beyond the Gates!

Tamara Tunie is an absolute get as Anita Dupree (formerly Betty Jackson). That is casting gold!

The other two I am indifferent to, but I will say: Karla Mosley was refreshing as Amanda on The Young and the Restless.

FYI, Amanda Sinclair was played by Mishael Morgan on Y&R.

Michele Val Jean, show Btadley how to write a captivating soap!

Tamara Tunie and Scott Bryce

As many are celebrating their nominations for the upcoming 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on October 30, for some it was a “mixed bag of emotions,” as detailed by first time nominee Tamara Tunie (Anita Dupree, Beyond the Gates), who was named as one of the five women in the coveted Outstanding Lead Performance in a Daytime Drama Series: Actress category.

The Lead Actress nominations were actually announced on Monday on Entertainment Tonight, ahead of the full nomination announcement by NATAS on Tuesday. Sadly, on Sunday night, Tamara’s longtime friend, and former As the World Turns co-stars, Scott Bryce (ex-Craig Montgomery) passed away from cancer at 68-years-old.

Michael Fairman TV first reported the heartbreaking news of Scott’s death, and his beloved son, Jackson took to his Instagram to announce the death of his father, sharing, “What began as stage three esophageal cancer eventually spread and became brain tumors that took his life away from him.”

THE LOSS OF ‘AS THE WORLD TURNS’ CO-STAR

Tamara spoke on receiving the recognition from peers while mourning the loss and trying to process the news of Bryce’s death via heartfelt message on her Instagram on Wednesday. Tunie had appeared on As the World Turns as Jessica Griffin from 1986-1995, 1999-2007 and 2009. She crossed paths with Bryce during several of his runs on the show 1982-1987, 1988-89, 1990, 1993-94 and 2007-08.

In her video message, Tunie explained she was at the airport in Atlanta (where Beyond the Gates is taped) and was heading to Pittsburgh for a speaking engagement, but she took a few moments to address these two moments in her life.

Tamara began her video with, “Hey family. I didn’t want to let any more time go by without expressing some of the emotions I had been feeling over the past couple of days. Many of you know that a dear friend of mine passed Sunday night. He was like a brother to me. We were friends for 40 something years and we actually met on the set of As the World Turns, a daytime drama. Monday, a mere 24 hours later, it was announced that I was nominated for an Emmy award for Lead Actress in a Daytime Drama.”

Sharing how the loss of Scott Bryce has deeply-affected her, Tamara added, “So, you can only imagine the rollercoaster of emotions that I have been feeling since Sunday night. I know my daytime soap opera brother is smiling down on me and cheering me on, and I am so grateful for this recognition from my peers. Being nominated for the first time it’s a mixed bag of feelings I have to tell you.”

BEYOND THE GATES FAMILY SCORES BIG IN EMMY NOMINATIONS

However, Tamara took some moments to recognize Beyond the Gates Emmy nomination haul, expressing, “I’m looking forward to the next couple of months leading up to the awards as we continue to create great television. I am so proud of the rest of my cast members, not only those who are nominated, but every single person who works on this show and gives a hundred percent of themselves every single time they show up. Our crew, our production staff, the Beyond the Gates family is truly special.”

“To have these 15 nominations is really extraordinary. Thank you family for watching. Thank you for supporting us. Thank you for supporting me,” concluded Tunie.

You can check out Tamara’s emotional video message below.

Now, let us know, are you happy to see Tamara receiving the first Daytime Emmy nomination of her career for her role as Anita on Beyond the Gates?
