The Fate of Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens Revealed!

This will not sit well with fans of the hit UK soap opera, Downton Abbey, which will have its season three debut in the U.S come January 6th, as one of the most popular stars confirmed his departure from the series.

As we previously reported, there was much speculation that one of the main series stars Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Cawley, would not be returning for a fourth season.  Stevens is currently on Broadway in The Heiress with Oscar hopeful, Jessica Chastain.

SPOILER ALERT!!! And yesterday, on a very special Christmas episode of  “Downton” which aired in the U.K, viewers figured as much when we they saw how the episode concluded!

While we will avoid giving you the blow by blow details of this key episode and how the character of Matthew exits the canvas,  Dan Stevens spoke about his exit to the London Telegraph stating, “We were always optioned for three years … And when that came up it was a very difficult decision. But it felt like a good time to take stock, to take a moment. From a personal point of view, I wanted a chance to do other things. It is a very monopolising job. So there is a strange sense of liberation at the same time as great sadness because I am very, very fond of the show and always will be.  None of us had any idea of how successful “Downton” was going to be. I thought I was signing up for another period drama that had a slightly modern feel.  It had a freedom about it because it was coming out of the head of Julian Fellowes. Anything could happen and generally did.”

So “Downton” fans, are you sorry to hear the new that Dan Stevens had departed the series?  Let us know and make sure to watch all the drama unfold as this is Dan’s last season and how his departure will affect Lady Mary, Michelle Dockery in the seasons to come!

I don’t understand his leaving. I think they should have recast the role since it is pivotal.

I DEFINITELY THINK THAT THE ROLE SHOULD BE RECAST IF DAN CANNOT RETURN. HIS CHARACTER HAS BEEN SUCH A WONDERFUL , INTERESTING AND PIVITOL PART OF DOWNTON ABBY!!!

EVEN WITH THE WAY SEASON 3 SEEMED TO END, IT DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN THAT MATTHEW DIED. EVEN, IF SO, I IMAGINE THERE CAN BE SOME OTHER VERY INTERESTING STORYLINES. FELLOWES IS A FABULOUS WRITER. PLEASE, DON’T DISSAPOINT US!!!
