THE GLOBE Rumor Report: GH's Tony Geary Asked To Take 50% Pay Cut?

Courtesy/ABC
Consider the source here, but this item that has been making its way around the Internet all weekend. According to a report in The Globe in their October 29th print edition, the tabloid is reporting that General Hospital is insisting that seven-time Daytime Emmy winner Tony Geary (Luke Spencer) take a 50% pay cut. To which, Geary is saying if that is the case, he would leave the ABC soap opera.
In a piece on this … they go on to say, “From the network’s stand point, actors that work year round and enjoy non-stop front burner storylines don’t make that kind of money while sacrificing other areas of their lives for the sake of the show. Tony is insisting that if he leaves he also wants his character killed off to remind the audience that even beloved characters do die in daytime. Needless to say the network would rather leave the door open for the possibility of Tony’s return down the road.”
Is this just a morphed pieced by The Globe on the interview given by Geary to TV Guide Magazine, where he discusses if he was ever killed off the show and it is taken out of context? Do you think Geary was asked to take a pay cut? Thoughts? Comment below!
I think the Globe is equivalent to the National Enquirer and most stuff in it is all fabricated…but in this day and age of expense and supposed dying soaps, nothing would surprise me. I think the writers aren’t using TG to their full advantage. He’s had crappy story lines for a long long time.
Why don’t they ax that s___ that is after Molly’s boyfriend. Or kill off Britt’s mother finally !
So many unnecessary actors that just muck up the storyline. Tony is a main character look at the ratings improve with Anna, Robert etc…Just another reason to push away viewers from ABC mark my words!!
No way, jose’…Dr.O has got to stay…id be angry if she went away…OK!!!
Yes i agree, we need dr. O to stay. i love her. she is so evil entertaining and she loves to sing. lol. lets sing with dr. o. that would be a lot of fun. lol
If true (IF) the man is a fool. Anyone who leaves his show for six months of every year, with no discernible impact on the ratings, should realize that the viewers are used to watching the show without seeing his sorry mug.
I would just as soon kill Luke off. Have him die in Laura’s arms from some freak complication of the Polonium 210 antidote…. while Tracy gets there just seconds too late (although in time to hear Luke profess his undying love for Laura). Then, have Stefan come back to “comfort” Laura and they can fall in love.
In the unnecessary actor/actress character: please add Kristen Alderson as Kiki. Terrible actress. Terrible character. Boring, ridiculous storyline.
NO! I don’t believe the Globe’s rumor at all.
tobin bell is going to play luke spencer
Well considering celebritydirtylaundry.com is reporting it , I say bullshit!
Let him go. It’s turning back into General Mobsters Anyway.
Well I kinda dont blame ABC Tony/Luke doesn’t drive story anymore aside from the usual Emmy bate but that still isn’t year round and they do need to save money wherever they can, I know it sucks but in this day and age soaps cant afford to pay big budgets to big stars didn’t even Susan Lucci take a pay cut? As for Tony dictating story where does he get the right? Luke Spencer IS an iconic name but heck so is Laura Spencer but Genie didn’t get treated half as well as he has over the years why should he be able to choose his storyline when so many other big names on soaps have not?
its fake nobody talks to the tabloids unless they are desperatly in need of money this top actor would NOT talk to such a rag, nope do not believe it!!
How do you know it wasn’t leaked by ABC?
I have no doubt he was aked to take a pay cut… but 50% is excessive for anyone to take in one year! I hope they work this out. I don’t want to see Tony leave. If having him take a pay cut for his shorter schedule is in line with others it would only seem fair. If it allows others to come back for longer stints… that would be ok. GH will lose a sure bet Emmy winner if he leaves. Also a great character and talented actor. They must have been going through negotiations with the near miss with death. I am guessing it’s settled because he is happily going back to PC looking good!
LOL .. I say it’s pure bullshit … 🙂
LMFAO!!! You just came right out with that!!! Thank you for the laugh!
My family has always called them rag mags! I never wasted my money
or time with them.
I’m kind of mad what they said about AMC and OLTL, did the person that wrote this, ever watch? To say fans didn’t care about the shows is a lie, we wouldn’t have fought so hard if we didn’t care, what I heard from a lot of fans from a bunch of sites, is that they wanted AMC 5 days a week..
He is a part-time employee so why should he be given special privileges? Because of his status and perks and if he is making more than other actors that are there on a full-time basis, why shouldn’t his salary be cut? Steve Burton wasn’t given the same privileges when he asked to work less hours because of his commute – Y&R gave him what he needed and he is no longer at GH. I’ve never like the character of Luke, so good riddance if he chooses to leave. Recast the role if they so wish.
He wouldnt have to take such a pay cut if they drop about 6 to 8 characters i feel the show could do without: Olivia, Dante, Lulu(after baby story is over), Molly, Rafe, Taylor, T.J., and Shawn…i have nothing against the actors…i just feel these eight do nothing for the show…currently Dante and Lulu have an interesting front burner storyline but once the baby drama is over they could easily be written out…Dante and Lulu are the only two id be ok if they stayed but i feel there are too many characters on this show right now…also Sabrina and Carlos could also be eventually dropped as well as Micheal, Kiki and Morgan…a couple of newbies like Carlys brother or Scotts daughter would be ok to join the show…they really need to scale back on the cast and balance it out more, just saying!!!
But then again maybe its time to retire the Luke character…i like him with Tracy…but wen he goes on vacation for months the Tracy character has nothing much to do…maybe a new love interest would be good for her…how about Scotty of all people!!!
Well I don’t think the solution of putting 8 or 9 actors out of work so they could keep one is reasonable. It is so easy for us fans to say this character should go but that character is being played by real person who has bills to pay and families to raise just like the rest of us– so let’s have some compassion– it is hard for any actor to find a good paying gig, so lets not offer them, the less popular characters as sacrifices on the altar of AG— he has gotten well paid for his work over the years, he could retire tomorrow and he be fine, while a lesser character might not get another job on television again. So I say if AG doesn’t want to work for less, let him go– I bet in his case 50% of what he makes now, is still a hellva lot more than some actors make in their whole career. The dude should be grateful not greedy.
i wasnt totally saying drop these characters just to keep Geary, i feel the show could do better without most that i mentioned wheter Geary stays or not…and as for Geary the show…imo…might be better off without him…his storyline feels isolated from the rest of the cast and involves very few if any other characters except for Tracy…and when hes gone for months the show doesnt seem to suffer for it since he’s really not invovled in any other stories except his own…Tracy is almost in complete limbo when Luke isnt there…TG cant take the cut…if the rumor is true…then he can leave if he wants…if he stays id like to see more story involement with his daughter Lulu…the show survived without him when he left years ago and im sure it will survive if he leaves again…as for the other characters i mention…if the show needs to make budget cuts id start with them…
Tuthfully both need to happen for the show to make any progress – TG needs to take the cut or leave, and GH needs to make additional staff cuts. As someone who has lost my job recently I know it is hard to say people need to lost their jobs. However, if GH can’t make the economics work the show itself will be cancelled and all the more people will lose their jobs and all the viewers will lose their iconic show.
I agree; there are so many unused, unnecessary characters on the show with no real ties to Port Charles, that are maybe on once a week on a Tuesday or Wednesday as “fillers,”-the entire tween/teen scene, Carlos, Kiki, nuMorgan. Send the non-veterans off, keep a smaller cast of favorable characters and veterans, and stop the dumb storyline with MIchael, Kiki, and nuMorgan which has no chemistry, drama, or spark. It’s beyond boring.
I wouldn’t want any of the characters to leave for Geary’s sake. For me…I like watching a lot of people…for example…if there’s a party such as a wedding…if there’s a funeral…if there’s a court hearing…when there’s barely familiar faces in the room it just seems like a ghost town of what it once was.
Soaps are supposed to be family, friends, neighbors, connection…people in our lives, crossing our lives…bonds formed, etc. I have no desire to watch a show just about a few core group of people. I like how somehow their all intertwined in some way…it would seem sad to see so many drop off…
I really don’t believe this garbage. tony geary rules. i love him so much. tony is a wonderful actor. without luke spencer i wouldn’t watch gh again.
What do you do for the six months he isn’t on screen?
Maybe if it happened, Genie might finally have a story line of her own.
Maybe Genie is going back to Days of our Lives.
Good. hope the story is true. i hate tony geary, now just please go away.
Consider the source of the information: The Globe
I understand he must be one of the highest paid actor on daytime if not the highest and he does deserve it. But, he is not there all year round, so his paycheck must reflect that, he probably gets paid for the time he is on our tv, which in itself is already a way to save for GH. If Tony Geary has to take a 50% cut, well so would Maurice Benard… GH couldn’t bear to loose him especially if they kill him.
As much as I respect Geary’s acting talents, if such a cut — and his subsequent departure — would make possible the permanent hiring of Tristan Rogers and Genie Francis, well…I as a viewer would not object.
I kind of have to agree with you. If Tony Geary makes as much as I think he does than I get why he is being asked to take a cut. This feels a lot like the Ron Moss situation. Sadly I think some of the vets don’t quite understand that it’s not the ‘80s anymore. A lot of soap actors are looking for work and willing to work for much less than him. For the same money or even less, we may be able to get the Deception story line with Lucy, Laura, Kevin, and Scotty instead.
I would be downright in favor of it. Especially if Stephen Nichols were invited back.
There is only one soap that can handle SN; DOOL!!!
I would say that Steven Earl Johnson is needed in Salem right now far worse than another zombie in Port Charles.
JJ really needs his uncle Steve as a male role model, because the time travelling EggMutant Daniel just ain’t cutting it.
Even though I sincerely hope it is a rumor, but where ABC is concerned, anything is possible. Tony Geary returned to GH in 1993 and if GH is asking him to take that much of a pay cut after all these years then it would be understandable that Tony would want to leave. I really hope it is not true and definitely hope the character would not be killed off.
ABC would never ask a 50% pay cut of Tony Geary/Luke and not for Sonny..
they might ask for 10% … lol
only a fool would believe ABC would ask for 50% . LOL
Exactly! 50% is a bit extreme. I don’t think ANY company, no matter the business, would ask their employee to take a 50% pay cut. That’s crazy! LOL
Pay cuts have happened at Y&R to the most notable actors, I think it is probably true, maybe not 50%, though.
First of all, consider the source. Remember also, this is ABC…cost cutting is going around in all depts…someone’s gotta pay for that failed Katie Couric talk show revolution! To ABC’s….er…um…credit, budget cuts are hitting everywhere. Look how Days tapes almost a year ahead. I don’t know Geary’s contract but I highly doubt he’s paid when he’s off the show for his vacations. Frank Valentini had consistently kept OLTL under budget during his reign as EP over there. Granted, that didn’t stop ABC from cancelling the show but I think nothing could have saved it at that point. My point is that Frank especially knows budgets. He’s got a lot of high profile vets (that he does use effectively…notice some take weeks off to make room for other vets) that do want to work on GH and are enjoying working for him. He seems to be able to balance salaries, sets, special effects, and crew quite well. Jason Tam, who played Marko on OLTL even is quoted praising Frank for his budget know-how in the new issue of Soap Opera Digest. That same issue also says Lynn Herring posted on her Facebook that ABC nixed the new sets that were supposedly going to be built for Lucy and Laura’s spa. No new sets seems to be ABC’s mantra. I would have hoped that ABC would have thrown more money (for them at least) at GH for how much the show has improved AND for basically being the anchor to their daytime lineup….AFTER they famously screwed it up!
I love Tony Geary and feel he is worth every penny but nobody is worth mega money anymore. Carolyn Hinsey from Soap Opera Digest says that the era of 80s money is dead. Some actors don’t seem to think that though. Steve Burton wanted ABC to foot his travel bill from Los Angeles to Nashville for him to re-sign as Jason…I’m so happy they told him no. No one is above doing that for themselves…and trust me, he has the money…why should that be on ABC’s dime…they are paying him a salary and he does all those personal appearances which pay the actors too. He lucked out that Jill Farren Phelps arranged for Sony to pay for his flights at YR. Since he’s now the star of that show…how wonderful for him.
Hopefully, ABC, Geary, and GH can work it out….if this is something to be worked out. Cooler heads should prevail…fingers crossed!
You dont seem to unerstand the concept of a contract, Robbyrob. Tony gets paid whether he is,working or not. Recurring is when u get paid only when u work, and dobt.bbget paid when u r not working. Tony is not on recurring so he costs GH bigtime money even when he is home in Amsterdam for weeks at a time.
Not to mention that a contract covers a finite period. After which it is negotiated again. Every contract Tony has negotiated has given him more and more. Now the pendulum is swinging the other way. And since old Luke isn’t even on the show for six months out of the year, its a bit hard to believe that he is indispensable for the other six months.
Maybe its just plublicity…?
publicity isn’t far from the truth
in more ways than Tony Geary…..
this weeks headlines…. GH is #1 in the all-important 18-54 demographic
so…. GH can now charge more monies, for ad revenues and such … because of more viewers?
so…. Tony geary’ is leaking his upcoming contract negotiations?
it’s all protracted…. spelled out
who knows… do i yearn for his character on screen
no
do I wonder how it is they can’t utilize Laura more and give her something to do?
yes
GH – please keep the newbies who help elevate… regardless of status and longevity
I love Dr. O – Brad – Britt – Ellie – Alice – Mylo –
can GH remain true to itself without Tony Geary
absolutely
Geary, just head back to Copenhagen and spend the rest of your days you have left smoking a bowl and tipping go go boys at the Midnight Unicorn.
If I had the op, I sure as heck would!
Uh…I think it’s Amsterdam …but anyway. Maybe ABC floated this story to get reaction. After his TV Guide interview I’m soured on Geary as I’m sure many fans are. Who needs him? I’m fine with his “retirement” as long as we get Robert Scorpio and Laura. And I agree that GH needs to cut it’s cast in half. No need for a lot of the filler characters.
I would keep Robert Scorpio AKA Tristan Rogers and let Tony Geary go on his merry way!
Why not keep BOTH and take out the OLTL trash?
I do think he is gone a lot, but I’m not sure how much he gets paid in relation to the others on the cast. I’m of the school of thought that one should get paid for the work he does, not for who he is or what he is theoretically capable of, but for what he actually does. We don’t live in economic times when resources can be just thrown away on someone who doesn’t contribute as much as his peers.
All actors would be wise to do whatever possible to keep their daytime jobs. There are fewer jobs every year. It is true the heyday of soaps ended quite a few years ago. La lucci took close to a 50 per cent cut as did Y&R actors and probably every one else in daytime. SoPs are far less profitable and millions of viewers quit the soaps. I was never a Tony Geary fan.
No I don’t think they would ask him to take a 50% cut. Tony Geary is so much a big part of general hospital. He is why I have watched since the early 80’s.
oh brother, i sure hope not, but the tabloids sometimes get it right, it a 50/50 chance, and those odds are to big, this really sucks…
If this is true then Geary better buy a clue with all the money he’s made over these past decades.
He disses the pairing that made him such a big soap star and seems to forget that without the pairing of his character with Laura he was going to be only a short term day player. Now he seems to think he’s above it all. And his attitude to fans is just abysmal.
It wouldn’t bother me – or quite a few others from what I’ve read – if he did turn that six month annual vacation (who else gets that??) into a permanent exit. He’s been phoning his performances for years, yet, inexplicably, his ego and sense of self-worth have exploded out of all porportion to his talent – or lack thereof.
And it would be nice if he’d remember that there are a whole lot of people, cast and crew, dependent on GH staying on the air. What a blowhard.
This is THE BEST POST ABOUT THIS ON THE ENTIRE THREAD!!!
I am going to print this off and frame it. Right next to my Time magazine Luke & Laura cover from 1981.
Amen, Boes, re the pairing of Tony with Genie. Luke and Laura forever. And ever. AMEN!
I hope this isn’t true about Anthony Geary ….I love him and he has been part of GH for so many years. Also, he did NOT take 6 months off this year if I recall correctly. He took a shorter vacation than normal. I hope Tony stays with GH, and some sort of arrangement can be made between AG and GH!!!!!!! I am a big fan of his and think he needs to stay with the soap!!!!!!
Only because he was off longer than usual for his “winter” break.
Tony usually takes three six to eight werk vacations each year and goes home to Holland.
This past year (over the winter) Tony had back surgery… he was supposed to go to the Swiss clinic but they called in Tristan Rogers to take his place. So his summer vacation was cut short
this is bs…..I have been a devoted watcher for 30 years and this is crazy…what is really going on….Luke has always made the storyline and without his character there will be no excitement….come on!!!!!!
Consider the source-total utter crapola!
But I will say this-considering he gets 2 lengthy vacations per year he should take some pay cut. Maybe not 50 percent but how about 25?
And if Susan Lucci was willing to take a pay cut when she was on All My Children, he should as well.
And if GH needs to cut loose excess baggage here’s my list: Rafe, Molly, TJ, Taylor, Kiki, Morgan, Olivia, Silas and of course topping the list: SABRINA!!!!!!!!!!!
Jenny
Topping my excess baggage list-Kristen Alderson/Kiki! I cringe at her scenes, God awful!
She came in second behind Suckbrina on my list LOL!
She always looks like she is smelling something foul in her scenes. It’s beyond dreadful.
dmr
LOL spot on….
I don’t get Kiki’ acting choices… or does she… screech, spoiled rotten, doesn’t think outside of her space…. I happen to like Ava… what on earth happened to Kiki? I don’t see how she was so lauded on OLTL….. recasts and new characters abound… Kiki isn’t cutting it… she’s kookoo
Michael… what do people see in him? he can emote puzzlement… blank look… he’s pretty sterile one note two expressions…. and that’s Michael… bland
Sabrina – oh the life she brought…. blank stares of bewilder from the audience… huh? whats this? LOL… yikes no figure – stick – stuck with Patrick… for all eternity it seemed like; better left alone; to shudder what could have happened had KM not returned
to be fair:
DAYS
Daniel – “God” what are the writers’ ON ???? !!!! Daniel answers everything… daniel is on the canvas doing everything… Daniel will lead you…. find Daniel
even Maggie finally… seems bewildered….. let him go already
enuf! DOOL’ cast is on fiyah with…. (GH) this is the one mishap that drives me up the wall…. so many talented others who could/can steer drive story…
Cameron – I’m so glad he’s on his way out… his expressions and acting style… just do not fit – he’s like a fish without water…. ect… I’d happily see him off in to the sunset with Gabbi – as she leaves
if I have to have a 3rd… I’ll thrown in for fan voice… they’d more than likely choose, Rafe and/or Gabi… I happen to adore Gabi, since she’s had the baby… but knowing she’s exiting… I love her story with Will and Sonny and with Nick. And… Rafe being Rafe… and Galen Gerring…. he’s choice for so many… and i’m with them
soaps aren’t complete… some choices and actors just creep up on us and i’m cringing at Kiki and Daniel…
I agree with Jenny – I see no problem with GH story line by letting the people go who she mentioned in her post.
There probably is some truth to it. This guy barely works and if he is the highest paid or one of the highest, they should cut him loose. He’ barely on and not missed when he’s not. In my opinion, I would trade him in a second for Tristan Rogers
I think this is rubbish. But even more to the point, I ask if this “piece” even deserves the attention it is getting on what I consider a factual, legitimate soap opera news web site?
I think if the writers get rid of some of the non-talented actors/actresses-Kiki, nuMorgan, and a lot of the new recurring staff, they will find the money to give to the talented veteran cast and returning veterans for when they come to Port Charles to visit! I love Luke Spencer! Love Luke with Tracy!
I agree, dmr. I love Luke Spencer and he is very talented – also enjoy Luke with Tracy. Luke (Tony) has kept GH going along with Tristan Rogers, Finola Hughes, Jane Elliott and other VETS.
Not sure if true but possibly a grain of truth somewhere. Oh HELL NO JFP will be asking TG to YR on contract role and watch loyal CBS viewers go ballistic if this would happen, I know I would personally because we already have enough with Steve Burton hogging the screen time.
Ashes to ashes…
Dust to dust…
Killing Y&R is a must!
Go bark at someone else because you are a just another nasty poster that thinks if YR is gone “your soap” will flourish…guess what if something happened to YR the death of daytime as we know it fro the rest of soaps. Remember in ’09 when CBS cancelled the dinosaur of all soaps GL (be still my heart) fell the other soaps died quickly and be careful what you wish for because it could happen to your soap which ever one you like.
One would think that Maurice Benard/Soony would be asked to take a pay cut also, if in fact Tony was asked to take a cut ..
GH does have other big payout actors. also ..
If you believe The Globe, you also believe little green men from outer space are hiding in your bushes.
Stupid me…i thought it was squirrels,…lol
LMFAO! Don’t forget they also believe that the world is gonna end as well.
Who can live on a mere $750,000? I don’t begrudge anyone making big bucks but $1.5M for 18 weeks of work. Tony sounds like a 1%er to me. Don’t get me wrong I love the character of Luke and if the story is true I will miss him but Luke is hardly on GH as it is. Just think of the story lines for Laura, Lulu and Lucky that could result from the demise of Luke. Not to mention Tracy. Several years Sony tried the same thing with Y&R’s Eric Braden. He quit Y&R for a short time and came back. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
OMG
he lesser of two evils
I’d stomach Luke so much easier and faster…..
I can’t even type about Victor for long… simply void
I think TG should come out of the closet already and move to Amsterdam permanently.
A Devil finds it incredible that a bunch of fools who never watched a single episode of General Hospital before Dumb & Dumber took over the show in February 2012 think they know what made the show in the first place.
It’s like this kids…. There have been three eras of General Hospital:
1) The Steve Hardy Era.
2) The Luke Spencer Era.
4) The Sonny Corinthos Era.
Now that isn’t to say there have not been other important characters, but those three are your defining anchors. We all know why Steve Hardy isn’t around. But the bottom line is…. No Luke, No Sonny, no GH.
Todd Manning… or Frodd Quartermanning and his brainless, void of any talent “daughter” will never be the reason this show survives. Nor will the hack writer who put them where they don’t belong in the first place.
Why are GH ratings higher right now? Think about it. It ain’t Frodd or the Twit. It’s not even the recently undead Jeromes. It’s Robert Fucking Scorpio.
Total nonsense …..
You’re right Satan. Robert F’ing Scorpio IS the reason. And it they brought back Laura to a halfway decent story instead of making her into a frumpy pod version of herself she would be bringing ratings too.
I love Luke because I started watching just before his 1st air date but it ‘appears’ he thinks he is The Show. The reason I liked him was “Luke & Laura” and They are what made Him. He basically said not long ago They are Dead. Well, then fine….if you do not want to Hold the History together that Made You…then do not be a part of the Future. Goodbye Luke!
Stick a fork in him he”s done. He tanks L&L. You can see the disgust in his face when she is onscreen with him. He is a drunk, and says he is now. Luke that is. TG thinks he is wonderful. Believe me he is the only one. He ran over his grandson, and then went to a brothel and ignored his daughter. His family has tried to help him. TG does not want to be with Laura. He wants to drag down Tracy with him. Anyone in a story with him, get a vacation wanted or not when he leaves for months at a time. I did like Luke but he has run his course, Globe story true or not Goodbye, take Scummy with you. They are both past their past due date. What’s left.? They break the law, get away with it. Luke doesn’t work all he does is leech off the leeches. The ratings are up because Robert, Anna ,Robin. Faison and Dr O are bad but funn7y. They will also get old. But I doubt they will run for mayor after all the evil. I FF through Luke now. If its true, tiic can take some of the money and pay Tristan Rogers to stay. !!!
Go away, Anthony Geary. Even your diehard fans (such as moi) no longer care for you on our screens.
LUKE is kind of gross these days…he is all played out…his character has no morals or scruples, does not add anything to GH……if he left, I would not miss him……his scenes are a waste of time
Correct me if I am wrong. Wasn’t it Sir Anthony Geary a key factor in pulling GH out of the edge of doom back in the early 80’s? If paying him a mere $1.5 mil per year, I consider that an underpayment since that time (the early 80’s) GH has thrived and raked in the billions of dollars since then and has helped promote ABC prime time lineup for those who followed this sort of thing! To even consider asking Sir Anthony Geary to take a paycut is simply considered a disgraceful act. Disney/ABC get your act together before you really lose a gem of an actor who has put many of your shows on the map, literally and figuratively speaking!

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).
Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.
Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON
Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”
Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).
Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.
“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?
During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.
Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.
You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.
Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.
Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.
As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY
Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.
Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.
Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS
Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.
In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison. During their conversation, Anna sees the hallucination of Peter August (Wes Ramsey) right while Valentin is standing there.

Later Anna was on her way to saying goodbye to Valentin, when the two share an emotional hug. After Valentin made his exit, Peter reappeared and warned Anna to not let Valentin distract her because she has important work to do. Anna answers, “I know.”
So, what did you think of General Hospital’s 16,000 episode? What do you think is wrong with Jason? What is the important “work” that Anna has to do? Were you glad to see Sonny get a seat on the hospital board, or not so much. Weigh-in via the comment section. But first, check out the scenes on Jason and Tristan’s long flight to Port Charles.
