THE GLOBE Rumor Report: GH's Tony Geary Asked To Take 50% Pay Cut?

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

Consider the source here, but this item that has been making its way around the Internet all weekend.  According to a report in The Globe in their October 29th print edition, the tabloid is reporting that General Hospital is insisting that seven-time Daytime Emmy winner Tony Geary (Luke Spencer) take a 50% pay cut.  To which, Geary is saying if that is the case, he would leave the ABC soap opera.

In a piece on this … they go on to say, “From the network’s stand point, actors that work year round and enjoy non-stop front burner storylines don’t make that kind of money while sacrificing other areas of their lives for the sake of the show. Tony is insisting that if he leaves he also wants his character killed off to remind the audience that even beloved characters do die in daytime. Needless to say the network would rather leave the door open for the possibility of Tony’s return down the road.”

Is this just a morphed pieced by The Globe on the interview given by Geary to TV Guide Magazine, where he discusses if he was ever killed off the show and it is  taken out of context?  Do you think  Geary was asked to take a pay cut?  Thoughts? Comment below!

I think the Globe is equivalent to the National Enquirer and most stuff in it is all fabricated…but in this day and age of expense and supposed dying soaps, nothing would surprise me. I think the writers aren’t using TG to their full advantage. He’s had crappy story lines for a long long time.

Why don’t they ax that s___ that is after Molly’s boyfriend. Or kill off Britt’s mother finally !
So many unnecessary actors that just muck up the storyline. Tony is a main character look at the ratings improve with Anna, Robert etc…Just another reason to push away viewers from ABC mark my words!!

If true (IF) the man is a fool. Anyone who leaves his show for six months of every year, with no discernible impact on the ratings, should realize that the viewers are used to watching the show without seeing his sorry mug. I would just as soon kill Luke off. Have him die in Laura’s arms from some freak complication of the Polonium 210 antidote…. while Tracy gets there just seconds too late (although in time to hear Luke profess his undying love for Laura). Then, have Stefan come back to “comfort” Laura and they can fall in love.

In the unnecessary actor/actress character: please add Kristen Alderson as Kiki. Terrible actress. Terrible character. Boring, ridiculous storyline.

Well I kinda dont blame ABC Tony/Luke doesn’t drive story anymore aside from the usual Emmy bate but that still isn’t year round and they do need to save money wherever they can, I know it sucks but in this day and age soaps cant afford to pay big budgets to big stars didn’t even Susan Lucci take a pay cut? As for Tony dictating story where does he get the right? I have no doubt he was aked to take a pay cut… but 50% is excessive for anyone to take in one year! I hope they work this out. I don’t want to see Tony leave. If having him take a pay cut for his shorter schedule is in line with others it would only seem fair. If it allows others to come back for longer stints… that would be ok. GH will lose a sure bet Emmy winner if he leaves. Also a great character and talented actor. They must have been going through negotiations with the near miss… Read more »

I’m kind of mad what they said about AMC and OLTL, did the person that wrote this, ever watch? To say fans didn’t care about the shows is a lie, we wouldn’t have fought so hard if we didn’t care, what I heard from a lot of fans from a bunch of sites, is that they wanted AMC 5 days a week..

He is a part-time employee so why should he be given special privileges? Because of his status and perks and if he is making more than other actors that are there on a full-time basis, why shouldn’t his salary be cut? Steve Burton wasn’t given the same privileges when he asked to work less hours because of his commute – Y&R gave him what he needed and he is no longer at GH. I’ve never like the character of Luke, so good riddance if he chooses to leave. Recast the role if they so wish.

He wouldnt have to take such a pay cut if they drop about 6 to 8 characters i feel the show could do without: Olivia, Dante, Lulu(after baby story is over), Molly, Rafe, Taylor, T.J., and Shawn…i have nothing against the actors…i just feel these eight do nothing for the show…currently Dante and Lulu have an interesting front burner storyline but once the baby drama is over they could easily be written out…Dante and Lulu are the only two id be ok if they stayed but i feel there are too many characters on this show right now…also Sabrina and… Read more »

Well I don’t think the solution of putting 8 or 9 actors out of work so they could keep one is reasonable. It is so easy for us fans to say this character should go but that character is being played by real person who has bills to pay and families to raise just like the rest of us– so let’s have some compassion– it is hard for any actor to find a good paying gig, so lets not offer them, the less popular characters as sacrifices on the altar of AG— he has gotten well paid for his work… Read more »

i wasnt totally saying drop these characters just to keep Geary, i feel the show could do better without most that i mentioned wheter Geary stays or not…and as for Geary the show…imo…might be better off without him…his storyline feels isolated from the rest of the cast and involves very few if any other characters except for Tracy…and when hes gone for months the show doesnt seem to suffer for it since he’s really not invovled in any other stories except his own…Tracy is almost in complete limbo when Luke isnt there…TG cant take the cut…if the rumor is true…then… Read more »

Tuthfully both need to happen for the show to make any progress – TG needs to take the cut or leave, and GH needs to make additional staff cuts. As someone who has lost my job recently I know it is hard to say people need to lost their jobs. However, if GH can’t make the economics work the show itself will be cancelled and all the more people will lose their jobs and all the viewers will lose their iconic show.

I agree; there are so many unused, unnecessary characters on the show with no real ties to Port Charles, that are maybe on once a week on a Tuesday or Wednesday as “fillers,”-the entire tween/teen scene, Carlos, Kiki, nuMorgan. Send the non-veterans off, keep a smaller cast of favorable characters and veterans, and stop the dumb storyline with MIchael, Kiki, and nuMorgan which has no chemistry, drama, or spark. It’s beyond boring.

I wouldn’t want any of the characters to leave for Geary’s sake. For me…I like watching a lot of people…for example…if there’s a party such as a wedding…if there’s a funeral…if there’s a court hearing…when there’s barely familiar faces in the room it just seems like a ghost town of what it once was. Soaps are supposed to be family, friends, neighbors, connection…people in our lives, crossing our lives…bonds formed, etc. I have no desire to watch a show just about a few core group of people. I like how somehow their all intertwined in some way…it would seem sad… Read more »

I understand he must be one of the highest paid actor on daytime if not the highest and he does deserve it. But, he is not there all year round, so his paycheck must reflect that, he probably gets paid for the time he is on our tv, which in itself is already a way to save for GH. If Tony Geary has to take a 50% cut, well so would Maurice Benard… GH couldn’t bear to loose him especially if they kill him.

Tristan

As much as I respect Geary’s acting talents, if such a cut — and his subsequent departure — would make possible the permanent hiring of Tristan Rogers and Genie Francis, well…I as a viewer would not object.

Jenn

I kind of have to agree with you. If Tony Geary makes as much as I think he does than I get why he is being asked to take a cut. This feels a lot like the Ron Moss situation. Sadly I think some of the vets don’t quite understand that it’s not the ‘80s anymore. A lot of soap actors are looking for work and willing to work for much less than him. For the same money or even less, we may be able to get the Deception story line with Lucy, Laura, Kevin, and Scotty instead.

Even though I sincerely hope it is a rumor, but where ABC is concerned, anything is possible. Tony Geary returned to GH in 1993 and if GH is asking him to take that much of a pay cut after all these years then it would be understandable that Tony would want to leave. I really hope it is not true and definitely hope the character would not be killed off.

First of all, consider the source. Remember also, this is ABC…cost cutting is going around in all depts…someone’s gotta pay for that failed Katie Couric talk show revolution! To ABC’s….er…um…credit, budget cuts are hitting everywhere. Look how Days tapes almost a year ahead. I don’t know Geary’s contract but I highly doubt he’s paid when he’s off the show for his vacations. Frank Valentini had consistently kept OLTL under budget during his reign as EP over there. Granted, that didn’t stop ABC from cancelling the show but I think nothing could have saved it at that point. My point is… Read more »

You dont seem to unerstand the concept of a contract, Robbyrob. Tony gets paid whether he is,working or not. Recurring is when u get paid only when u work, and dobt.bbget paid when u r not working. Tony is not on recurring so he costs GH bigtime money even when he is home in Amsterdam for weeks at a time.

Elizabeth
Guest
Elizabeth

Not to mention that a contract covers a finite period. After which it is negotiated again. Every contract Tony has negotiated has given him more and more. Now the pendulum is swinging the other way. And since old Luke isn’t even on the show for six months out of the year, its a bit hard to believe that he is indispensable for the other six months.

Uh…I think it’s Amsterdam …but anyway. Maybe ABC floated this story to get reaction. After his TV Guide interview I’m soured on Geary as I’m sure many fans are. Who needs him? I’m fine with his “retirement” as long as we get Robert Scorpio and Laura. And I agree that GH needs to cut it’s cast in half. No need for a lot of the filler characters.

I do think he is gone a lot, but I’m not sure how much he gets paid in relation to the others on the cast. I’m of the school of thought that one should get paid for the work he does, not for who he is or what he is theoretically capable of, but for what he actually does. We don’t live in economic times when resources can be just thrown away on someone who doesn’t contribute as much as his peers.

All actors would be wise to do whatever possible to keep their daytime jobs. There are fewer jobs every year. It is true the heyday of soaps ended quite a few years ago. La lucci took close to a 50 per cent cut as did Y&R actors and probably every one else in daytime. SoPs are far less profitable and millions of viewers quit the soaps. I was never a Tony Geary fan.

If this is true then Geary better buy a clue with all the money he’s made over these past decades. He disses the pairing that made him such a big soap star and seems to forget that without the pairing of his character with Laura he was going to be only a short term day player. Now he seems to think he’s above it all. And his attitude to fans is just abysmal. Consider the source-total utter crapola!

But I will say this-considering he gets 2 lengthy vacations per year he should take some pay cut. Maybe not 50 percent but how about 25?

And if Susan Lucci was willing to take a pay cut when she was on All My Children, he should as well.

And if GH needs to cut loose excess baggage here’s my list: Rafe, Molly, TJ, Taylor, Kiki, Morgan, Olivia, Silas and of course topping the list: SABRINA!!!!!!!!!!!

I think if the writers get rid of some of the non-talented actors/actresses-Kiki, nuMorgan, and a lot of the new recurring staff, they will find the money to give to the talented veteran cast and returning veterans for when they come to Port Charles to visit! Correct me if I am wrong. Wasn’t it Sir Anthony Geary a key factor in pulling GH out of the edge of doom back in the early 80’s? General Hospital’s Nancy Lee Grahn Chats On Her Daytime Emmy-Nominated Performance and Its Significance

When the nominations were revealed for the 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, General Hospital mainstay, Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis), was recognized for her stunning work in the Alexis-centric standalone episode which honored her 25th anniversary with the ABC daytime drama series.

Grahn, is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner.  She won back in 1989 in a tie for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work as Julia Wainwright on Santa Barbara along with All My Children’s Debbi Morgan, and again received the honors in that category in 2012 for her work on General Hospital.

Now. she is vying for the gold in 2022 in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category against other formidable actresses including: B&B’s Kimberlin Brown, DAYS Stacy Haiduk, Y&R’s Melissa Ordway, and her GH castmate, Kelly Thiebaud.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Nancy to talk about her decision to enter the Emmy race this year, her powerful and moving scenes, why this nomination is significant and important to her, and her take on some very important social issues of our time.

Always candid, insightful, combined with great humor and wit, here’s what Nancy had to share below, and make sure to check out GH this week when sparks fly between Alexis and Gregory (Gregory Harrison). Will he turn out to be the new beau in Alexis’ life? Stay tuned.

Congratulations on the Emmy nomination.  How do you feel about being in the running again, especially with the material from your 25th anniversary episode?

NANCY:  You know, I don’t submit myself if I don’t think I have something, and I didn’t last year.  This year, I had the one show, and the first reason I submitted myself was I had the episode that was worthy of the competition. These judges have to sit, and watch this stuff, and very often, it’s hard to watch soap opera scenes.  It really is, unless you’re in it.  It’s a different kind of material that most primetime people aren’t used to watching.  So, it’s tricky business.  I don’t want to put them through anything too awful. I don’t want to torture them and I’ve judged before. It can be a bit tedious. So, for me to submit myself, I thought, it has to be something that isn’t going to torture another human being. The second thing is, older women get marginalized the older they get, and they get diminished very often, and every time we get nominated, it means something different to me.  This time, to me, I want it to somehow be symbolic, or a shoutout to women who are still producing, who have been doing their job for a long time and are still doing it good enough, and that it’s still worthy of respect and recognition.

When we were at the GH Convention back in March, I played the scene on-stage for the fans in attendance of when Alexis goes over to the corner of Kevin’s office and heals her younger self.  You saw the reaction just from the fans.  It’s such a beautiful moment within the story.  What did you think about how the standalone episode was crafted?

NANCY:  It was a different experience for me because GH co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, and script writer, Scott Sickles gave it the attention, but even more to that, they allowed me to participate in the creation of it.  They allowed the director, Phideaux Xavier, to participate.  We all sat in a room.  They said, “You know what?  Make it how you’re comfortable with it.”  There were so many people who gave it time and effort, and Phideaux gets a lot of credit because he came up with a lot of ideas.  So, the little girl in the therapy room wasn’t initially a part of it.  That was Phideaux’s idea, and they let us alter things, and they allowed me to write some words that meant something to me with the character.  Our producers, Michelle Henry and M.K Weir, who I both adore, were also a part of this.

That is great to hear that you were involved in the collaborative process of the creation of the episode.

NANCY:  We read through the whole script, and we worked it like you would on primetime. We went through it like, “Does this moment work?  Does that moment work?  Does this make sense?  Does that make sense?”  We never do that in soaps.  We don’t get to that.  So, it was a gift to me.  It really was. Chris and Dan, and Scott and Phideaux, and the two producers, generosity in gifting me that experience and making sure that it was to everybody’s liking, was really very special to me, and it meant a lot.

Did you come up with the key lines which summarized Alexis as a person and her journey: “I’m Alexis Davis, and I’m a fighter, and an idealist and an advocate?”

NANCY:  No. They designed it, but we were allowed to enhance and contribute creatively to it, and, we don’t normally have the time to do that.  They don’t have the time to – and you can’t allow people to do that with every episode, to be creatively participating, because it would turn into madness with everybody.

Then, when it came down to choosing the scenes from your anniversary episode to include for your Emmy submission, was that a challenging process of which moments to go with?

NANCY:  I just told a little story with it with the time that I had, and so, I edited it with a friend of mine.  I did a sort of pre-edit on it, I’m good at that, and handed the timeline to our editor, who nicely put it together. It took very little effort.

In my humble opinion, I think that episode featured one of your all-time best performances.

NANCY: Thank you. There was a nice effort from everybody, from the lighting to everybody else, and all the effort Phideaux put into it.  He worked so hard on that!  It was fun for us.  It was like the old days where you really got to work something out.

It truly harkened back to everything we knew up to that point about Alexis and her past as well, and included a montage of scenes over the years.

NANCY:  I think it was M.K. who put that together, but when you’re working at the pace we’re working now, to have to sit and put together a montage of twenty-five years, that’s not an easy feat.  Nobody has time for that anymore, but they did it, and like I said, it was really, really appreciated.  My only thought with it is that I wanted it to be relatable to other people.  I didn’t want it to just be some, you know, self-indulgent Alexis episode. I knew that by bringing in the little girl and talking about people being hurt in their childhood and how that makes somebody feel that it was probably relatable to many people, and so it became meaningful to other people and not just me.

Do you think you’ll attend the Daytime Emmys? I know the last time you won you were not present.

NANCY:  Yeah, I’m planning on it.  I mean, barring anything happening! (Laughs)

Does it feel nice to be recognized by your peers?

NANCY:  Of course, it does.  It always does, and way too often, women who are still producing well in their jobs, don’t get the respect and the acknowledgment for it.  So, that’s why I’m saying, this is no small thing, and that I want other women to know that I know that, and that I wish for them the same thing.

What was the reaction of your daughter, Kate and your fiancé, Richard, when you told them you were Emmy-nominated?

NANCY:  Richie goes, “What is this?  Your 18th nomination?” (Laughs). You know what I mean?  It was just kind of like, “Yeah, sure, why wouldn’t you be?” It wasn’t like, “Oh, my God!”  It was like they kind of expected that.  That was nice!  I’m glad they feel that way.  I’m glad they weren’t surprised.  They were like, “Sure!  Of course, you would be.  Why wouldn’t you be?”  I said, “You know, it doesn’t always work like that!”

Now comes the part of having to find a dress and all that goes with it for the red carpet.  Do you enjoy that part?

NANCY:  No, I hate that part.  That is my… oh ‘boohoo’, you know?  I mean, I have to find something to wear.  Also, the older you get, that becomes so much less important, and the more makeup, and the more hair, and the more foofy, the more ridiculous I look. I start looking like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.  You’ve just got to keep it simple.

You were talking about women and ageism.  Do you not feel that also exists for men?

NANCY:  It exists for men, but it’s not at all on the same par as women.  I mean, men still get paid more than women, and men still are valued more than women.  I mean, there are exceptions, but if you look in any place of employment, even the soaps, you will typically find the men making more money than the women, and the older the women get, the less they get.  Life’s not fair right now.  It’s fairer than it was, but still the equality game is not won yet.

I know how much all of this means to you in terms of equality for women, and people being run out of their jobs because of their age.

NANCY:  It’s just a reality.  It’s not something that I’m hopeless about, but I have a story to tell.  I’ll tell it when the time is right.  It’s life!  It happens in every field everywhere.  When my mom was 70, she was still producing the exact same way she was producing when she was 30, and she got run out, and was replaced by a man who was 40 or something, and there was no particular reason for it.  It was just, “You’re done.  We decided you’re done,” but like I said, it happens everywhere, in every line of work, and that’s why I just wanted to give a shout-out, when you still, after 36 years, can be recognized or shown respect or acknowledgment for what your do.  It’s a very big deal that I am appreciative of and grateful for.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: What’s Up With Elizabeth?

Friday’s episode of General Hospital, finally moved the story of the haunting of Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) along a bit, after it has been a very slow build for the audience. As it turns out, and with the new developments, it appears that Liz has been going in and out of a catatonic state, while sleeping walking.

With a tip from Violet (Jophielle Love), Finn (Michael Easton), who is chatting with Gregory (Gregory Harrison), recalls Liz was having trouble sleeping and was that she given a sleeping aid. He thinks he may be on to something so he decides to go to Liz’s house to talk to her.

Meanwhile, Liz comes to her house and tears Finn and Violet out of the picture that Violet drew, and then gets a scissors and starts cutting pieces off of the drawing, bit by bit.

Cameron (William Lipton) comes home and see his mother.  She does not respond to him and appears in a trance-like state. He is getting more upset by the moment, and then Finn arrives on the scene.

Finn is able to get the scissors from Liz, and also get her to snap out of her trance.  Liz talks with Finn and wonders what is happening? She doesn’t even remember how she got home.  When Cameron fills Liz in on what she was doing … cutting up the drawing and all … Finn tells Liz he believes she is the one who is haunting herself.

In tears, if what Finn is claiming is true, then it is she who is responsible for slashing her dress, setting fire to Franco’s studio, and hitting Chase over the head.  In that moment, a teary-eyed Liz recognizes that something is terribly wrong, saying, “What’s happening to me?”

Finn promises Liz they will get to the bottom of this as Cameron looks on.

So, what is happening to Liz and why? Is this just a case of another sleeping pill storyline on soaps, where someone does not recall their actions or where they are going in the middle of the night a la Nighttime Hope on DAYS? Is someone controlling Liz to make her do these things?  Is something else physically wrong with Liz causing her behavior? Share your thoughts on this storyline … and where you think this is all heading via the comment section below.
