As The World Turns
The Van Hansis Interview – As the World Turns

© JPI Studios
As the World Turns literally turns up the heat at the end of this week and next, as Luke is going to be torn between two men: Reid and Noah. If ever a soap opera triangle has generated so much buzz, it is this one. And how cool! Because this time, this soapy triangle is between three men! Van Hansis (Luke), who delivers powerful and believable performances day in and day out, chatted with On-Air On-Soaps about Luke’s latest and most challenging conundrum to date. And what started out as a predictable sure bet that when As the World Turns airs its final episode come September, that Luke and Noah would reunite, has done a complete 180… or has it?
With the arrival of Eric Sheffer Stevens (Dr. Reid Oliver) to the Oakdale scene, as a very pompous neurosurgeon that first hated Luke’s guts, this hate-at-first-sight dynamic has set off sparks and electrical currents between Luke and Reid that fans are raving about, and in love with, and for good reason. So while the great debate of who will be Luke’s true love will continue on for the next several months, Van discusses Luke’s current journey, and the incredible opportunity that he has to affect so many people’s lives worldwide with his portrayal of a leading soap character who happens to be gay. And with daytime shunning so many of the gay characters you love to love over the past year, it is Van who has carried so much of the torch, when so many other LGBT characters came and went.
Now, with his first feature film under his belt, a bright future ahead of him, and a huge fan fest coming up next month for Van fans to see the guy in the flesh, he has it going on! On-Air On-Soaps heard you, the fans, on this one. For months you have been requesting and emailing us to chat with Van, and we got him. So, without further ado, here’s Van!
MICHAEL:
Luke and Reid have had such a phenomenal response, and are generating the hottest buzz right now in all of daytime. Did you have any idea that this was going to take off like this?
VAN:
© JPI Studios
I guess so, because Eric is a fantastic actor. He is a really inventive actor. I think it takes a really special actor to take a character like that, who on paper can look like an asshole, and he has basically made him someone to root for. Eric has done a really fantastic job of that. Honestly, going into this thing when Eric was cast, I had the idea that he and Luke would hook-up. But I did not know it would go as far as it has gone, or that it would become a real triangle, and a real relationship! It’s exciting for me to play, since Luke has been with the same person for three years now. But it’s interesting, because Reid brings out things in Luke that Noah hasn’t in a long time. I feel that Luke has a lot more fun now with Reid. I think it’s kind of back to what first started with Luke and Noah: the thrill of a new relationship. There is new stuff to discover about yourself and this person, when a relationship is so fresh. Of course, playing that is exciting. That being said, I think Noah brings something that Reid doesn’t. So, I actually think Luke is torn. I think he really, really cares about Noah, and always will. I think he is kind of intrigued by Reid and what Reid offers. But Reid has a lot of issues himself, and I don’t know if Luke is ready to go there and be with somebody who isn’t that nice a person to him. That being said, there were times when Noah wasn’t trying to be actively mean, like Reid was. But Noah could ignore Luke, and Luke would get needy around Noah. So, Luke is in a very interesting place now. It’s a very fun story to tell.
MICHAEL:
It sounds like you are having a good time with this triangle!
VAN:
I am having a great time! This is one of my favorite stories I have ever told, and it is so nice to go out with a bang. This is good soap opera, in my mind.
MICHAEL:
© JPI Studios
Recently, I interviewed ATWT’s head writer, Jean Passanante, and she spoke about the introduction of Reid to the Oakdale canvas as a spoiler for Nuke, and how she was shocked by the response from a good portion of the fans. She said, “We are getting positive feedback for Luke and Reid. And who would’ve imagined we could bring anyone between Luke and Noah? You never know. I thought people would yell, ‘You can’t do that.’ But it’s been great!”
VAN:
I also think there are a lot of people who are also upset that someone has come between Noah and Luke, as well.
MICHAEL:
What do you think about the acronym being used online for Luke and Reid: LuRe? Have you heard about it? Do you like it?
VAN:
I have heard that, and I have heard, Ruke. I think LuRe sort of rolls off the tongue better than Ruke. I mean Ruke, sounds like a fungal disease. I got a nasty case of the “Ruke”. (Laughs)
MICHAEL:
When I spoke to Jean, I also asked her if she was to foresee what the lives of Luke, Noah and Reid would be like five years from now after ATWT goes off the air, what would she envision? Jean stated, “Since this is completely speculative; someone gets married, and someone wants to adopt children. I think Luke would like to get married. It would be interesting to play that there is nothing in the world that Reid would like to do less than get married… and/or one of them wants a child they become attached to. There are lot of things, and an endless supply of stories that would have been done.” How do you feel about that? What would you envision down the line for Luke, since fans will not get to see that ever played out on-air?
VAN:
Well, first off, with the show coming to a close, certain decisions have to be made, and certain stories have to wrap up that if the show weren’t being canceled, they would not end. I never heard the idea of the story of Luke wanting to get married, and that it would be the last thing Reid would want to do. That would be very interesting story.
MICHAEL:
© JPI Studios
Do you think Luke would ever want to get married?
VAN:
I don’t know. I think if the show were to go on, what I would like to see for Luke is that he stops hiding himself behind his relationships. And to actually get off his ass out there and do something. He has his foundation, and that is great, but he doesn’t really seem to want to do anything. He seems to get everyone else to do things for him like his mom, or Holden, or Lucinda. Somebody always comes in and runs the foundation when he is not really feeling it. Reid is a brain surgeon, and has such a career and such a passion. Noah is a filmmaker, and he has a passion for it. Luke flits around and gets involved in his own love life, and his parent’s love life. I guess that is what soap opera characters do, but I don’t think I would be a friend with somebody like Luke, who absolutely has zero drive. You know, I loved the election storyline that led into the Brian storyline, and that too, was one of my other favorites. It also really set up for Luke that he doesn’t feel he has to work for things. He tried to buy the election, and when that didn’t work, his parents wanted him to go back to college, but he wanted to work for Damian’s shipping company. Now, the shipping company hasn’t even been mentioned in… I don’t know how many months! So I guess he is not working there anymore. (Laughs) But, I would like to see, before Luke jumps into getting married or anything, Luke really do something with his life. That being said, at the trajectory he is going, Luke doesn’t seem to want to do anything with his life except get involved with everyone else’s life. (Laughs) However, in regards to marriage, I do know family is important to Luke.
MICHAEL:
This week, and leading into next week, there is a big ‘game-changer’ in this triangle, when Noah sees Reid and Luke kissing inside Lily’s house! And later, Luke sees a necktie and flashes back to his and Noah’s first kiss! Did you know that the writing team got a swarm of neckties sent to them in honor of Nuke’s first kiss? And what is Luke going to do now with all his inner conflict and feelings? Will he go, “What do I do?”
VAN:
© JPI Studios
I did know about the incredible Nuke fans sending the ties to the writing team. I thought that was so nice, and I thought that was clever. Luke is going to go, “What do I do?” And when I said Luke is torn, this is when it comes to a head. Luke tries to make a decision, but his decision gets made for him. Through out all of that, Luke has feelings for two people right now, and again, that is a really interesting thing to play because I honestly think it happens. I think he has true feelings for two people, and he can’t be with one without hurting the other. That is a really tough predicament to be in, and you are going to end up hurting one of them, or yourself.
MICHAEL:
How does Jake Silbermann (Noah) feel about Luke having another man?
VAN:
Jake and I don’t talk about the show too much. We just saw Iron Man 2 the other week, but when we hang out, the show is not on our minds.
MICHAEL:
One of my favorite recent soap scenes was when Luke and Reid got stuck in an elevator together. And, what I liked about it was, what I thought was going to be soap plot device 101, didn’t actually end up like all scenes do when two people who are attracted to each other end up in an elevator. Usually, on a soap, they end up having sex. You guys didn’t. However, the sparks flew!
VAN:
© JPI Studios
I loved that scene! I liked that they did not give in to temptation, and they ended up antagonizing each other. There was a moment there. That was the first tangible spark that came between them. And, that is another part of what I like between Luke and Reid’s relationship. Through out it all, they do really like each other, and they don’t mind knocking each other down a few pegs. That speaks to a level of trust that these two characters have between them. If you do love somebody, and you do feel comfortable with them, it is OK to say these kinds of things, because it’s not really going to hurt the person. It’s flirting, in a way.
MICHAEL:
Ok. So how is working with Eric Sheffer Stevens? Fans want to know: is he a cocky, snarky guy like Reid, or a funny guy in person?
VAN:
No, he is not like Reid at all! He is a very nice guy, and very funny and smart. I have had a blast working with him.
MICHAEL:
Can Luke fans expect the triangle of Luke and Reid and Noah to play out till the end of the series in September?
VAN:
This plays out till the end, and especially, this is the story that is not going to wrap-up till the last couple of episodes. This is the big story, from what I have heard. We still have a month left to tape, but I am working a lot now, which is good! I think it’s going to be pretty exciting all the way till the finale.
MICHAEL:
© JPI Studios
Van, what did you think of Noah pushing Luke away during his blindness? Did you feel that it was too “plot devicy”?
VAN:
I don’t think it was ‘plot devicy’. I thought it was two people coming to the table with different things. Noah didn’t know where his life was going to be, so he could not commit fully, and that would not be good for Luke right now, but Noah needed space. Luke was saying, “I can be here for you. I can give you whatever you need.” When all Noah needed from Luke was a little bit of space. In the history of their relationship, stuff like this had happened before, but never to this degree. I think it was told well, and in the end, it was Luke who actually broke up with Noah, and said, “I cannot do this anymore,” and that now puts them in a position where Noah wants Luke back. And now, Luke is not sure about that anymore, even though it was him who broke up with Noah. I think the entire time Noah did not want to break up… he just wanted some space. Luke could not handle that.
MICHAEL:
Your cast mates landed several Daytime Emmy nominations including Michael Park (Jack) for Outstanding Lead Actor. It’s great that as the show goes to soap heaven, it’s got a chance for some of the show’s long time veterans to get some gold!
VAN:
I am very excited for the actors, and Michael Park is fantastic. But personally, the one I am most excited about is Marnie Schulenburg (Alison). From the first day she stepped on set, I thought, “Wow. This girl is really, really good.” And, I just don’t think she has gotten the recognition she deserves. If you saw the tribute to Lisa and Eileen Fulton…the 50’s episode…Marnie nailed that. She had the mannerisms, the voice, everything, and all she had done was watch old clips of Eileen Fulton on You Tube. She is really is a strong versatile actress. I think the reason she has not gotten her due is that Marnie is not a showy actor, but she has layers of depth underneath everything she does. I am thrilled for her, and it’s about damn time, I think. I am also happy that all the people behind the scenes got nominated, as well.

MICHAEL:
Did you put yourself in for a pre-nomination this year? Would you go to Vegas for the ceremonies on June 27th for the last Emmy hurrah for ATWT?
VAN:
I did put myself in, but I did not get pre-nominated. I would love to go to Vegas for the Emmys, but it kind of depends on some things. I would go, but I don’t know if I will go, let’s put it that way. (Laughs)
MICHAEL:
You have been very busy working on ATWT, and on a new film, Occupant. Are you done shooting the movie?
VAN:
I am done with the film. The film, Occupant was absolutely incredible to be a part of, and the biggest learning experience of my life. It was such a different experience than doing theatre or a soap, and I loved it. This was my first film. I am thrilled to see what happens with it, because I believe in it. It was beautifully shot. The cinematography was stunning and it looks so beautiful, and that is weird to say for a horror film, even though it’s kind of more like a psychological thriller than a horror film. I play “a guy”, and I cannot say much more than that. It is an interesting script, and it’s creepy.
MICHAEL:
Well, this had to be a real treat for you, because if I recall you are a big horror film aficionado.
VAN:
I do love horror films, and to be cast in one was amazing! I learned so much about myself as an actor, and I learned so much about the business. It was a real blessing to have gotten this film.

MICHAEL:
You are heading back to some familiar territory on Sunday, June 13th at the KDKA Soapstar Spectacular in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In fact, you attended the famed drama school, Carnegie-Mellon, located in Steel town!
VAN:
I did, and I am thrilled to go back to Pittsburgh. That is a very big deal to get into Carnegie. When I got into Carnegie I had gone to a performing arts drama school before, and I was the only kid in my class to get into Carnegie. I am originally from Greensfield, Massachusetts and I got scared by how good of a school Carnegie was. Then I thought, ‘Well maybe, I should just go to USC or NYU’, and then people said to me, “Van, if you got into Carnegie, you are stupid to turn it down.” So I went to Carnegie, and I loved it.
MICHAEL:
So you know the lay of the land pretty well there! Going to do some sight seeing?
VAN:
I am very familiar with the area. I am going to do a mini-tour for myself, and go back to all my old haunts. Pittsburgh has a unique accent. So when they say, “Are you going downtown?”…They say, “Yinz going dahntahn?” I have not heard that accent since I left Pittsburgh; I can’t wait to hear it again. (Laughs)
MICHAEL:
For those who want to see Van Hansis up close and personal (which at this point is probably in the millions worldwide) what will they see you and the other actors doing at the KDKA Soapstar Spectacular event?
VAN:
We are doing some actual soap opera scenes with fans with some of the other actors, and we are going to do a meet and greet. We are going to have a real soap opera set, and we are going to have a Q&A. Fans always like to hear funny things that happen behind the scenes. I always get, “Van, do you like to play practical jokes on people?” Personally, I don’t, and I don’t see that many practical jokes on As the World Turns, but I hear other shows do.
© JPI Studios
MICHAEL:
Since the actors will be sharing anecdotes or stories from behind-the-scenes, do you have a story to tell?
VAN:
I will tell a story, and I am not going to tell it in this interview because then no one will go to Pittsburgh! (Laughs) The great thing about the event is a portion of the proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in Pittsburgh , to help the fight against breast cancer. I think what is great about this event is that usually soap events are for one show or one cast, or for me, there will be Nuke events. This is a great because there are eleven actors coming from all three of the CBS’s soaps.
MICHAEL:
Who have you had fun hanging out with in the past, from the list of soap star attendees coming to Pittsburgh?
VAN:
From this list of people who are going, I have done events with Robert Newman (Ex-Josh, GL), and he is an awesome guy, and of course, Kim Zimmer (Ex-Reva, GL). I mean, she is Kim Zimmer! (Laughs) I am excited to meet the other actors. I believe, I am the only As the World Turns actor going.
MICHAEL:
You have done fans events all over the globe; including Paris (with another one this summer). What do fans at events say to you the most often? Is it about your looks, or something about the character you play?
VAN:
© JPI Studios
Well, they generally don’t talk about the way I look. However, a lot of people tell me I am short, but I don’t really feel like I am short. Compared to Jake Silbermann, of course, I am short. He is a giant! He is very tall. But I think I am as tall as, or taller than Eric. I also get a lot of people saying how much the Luke and Noah story has done for them, and how happy they are that it has been told. That is a really nice thing to hear. So, I would have to say, that is the main one.
MICHAEL:
This was a story tough year for gay storylines on the soaps, which has left both gay and members of the mainstream audience devastated. We are all so saddened that when ATWT takes it’s final bow, we will lose Luke Snyder, who has meant so much to so many gay people around the world. Going back one last time to my conversation with Jean Passanante, she believed when World Turns goes around its final orbit, that it does not mean the end of gay soap stories. Jean stated, “I don’t think when ATWT goes off it’s the end of gay characters. We are far from over when we have a world that has all types of people in it. I think the best soaps will always reflect that.” Your response to that?
VAN:
First, it has been my pleasure to play Luke and be a part of such an important character. I also completely agree with Jean. Somebody referred to telling gay storylines as a fad once, and that is really not what it is. I don’t think it’s a fad in any way. A fad to me is a style of clothing, or a haircut. This is telling people’s true stories in a soap opera environment. But I just heard they recast Bianca on All My Children, so that is good. It is sad to see the Luke and Noah storyline go. I am proud, and I don’t say this with pride for myself, but pride for the industry, that these characters really exploded, and their stories have been told now for four and half years, and that is almost half a decade! It has become common place for the show, and for the World Turns fans. And, so now when fans say, “I don’t like Luke,” it’s not because, “I don’t like him because he is gay,” it’s “I don’t like him because he is whiny.” If people don’t like the characters now, it has nothing to do with their sexual orientation. It has to do with the fact that they don’t like the characters, and that is actually how it should be. It has been such an honor to have told this story, and I do believe, in soaps there will be more LGBT stories told on daytime even after Luke, Reid, and Noah are gone.
© JPI Studios
MICHAEL:
In closing, as you prepare to say good-bye to Luke, will you be leaving with a sense of accomplishment?
VAN:
I am leaving feeling so much. I was in Central Park the other day, and this Hassidic Jewish woman came up to me and said, “Oh, I love your character on As the World Turns, and I love the story.” And on my facebook fan page, I have fans from every single part of the world. It is amazing the way this story has gotten out there, and that it has been seen by so many different types of people. It has just been incredible!

ATWT Alum Martha Byrne Pays Tribute to Eileen Fulton: “The Original Soap Star Who Paved the Way for the Likes of a Susan Lucci or Andrea Evans”
Tributes and remembrances are pouring in for the the late Eileen Fulton, who passed away on July 14th at the age of 91. Fulton broke the soap opera mold back in the early 60’s when she was cast to play Lisa Miller on As the World Turns, who would turn out to be the first villiainess, vixen, and homewrecker of daytime television.
Fans of the soap loved to love to hate her for how she destroyed many lives in her quests to nab a husband; especially one she had set her sights set on. In fact, Lisa was married 8 times during the history of the show. Fulton was with ATWT on and off until the final year of the show in 2010.
Martha Byrne, who has been Fulton’s castmate for a time (Bryne played Lily Snyder from 1985 to 1989 and then again from 1993-2008 where she also played Rose D’Angelo), took to her account on x to share her thoughts on what Eileen meant to the genre, and also spoke on how Fulton handled not being as front and center on the soap operas as the years went by.

Photo: JPI
“What can I say about Eileen Fulton. The original soap star who paved the road for the likes of a Susan Lucci or Andrea Evans,” began Bryne. “Since Eileen started on ATWT when the show was live, there aren’t enough pieces of history for us to truly grasp the enormity of her stardom and presence in the entertainment business. I remember being so impressed that she was a writer. The best part was she would use real stories from behind the scenes and change the names. Maybe that was her way of giving the audience a wink to include them even more.”

Photo: CBS
Bryne went to share, “She (Eileen) loved her fans and she had many. I went to her one woman shows and the place was always packed. As the years went on and her role wasn’t as prominent as it had been she took it with class. I never heard her complain as many did who were frustrated they didn’t have a storyline. She was always a class act and a true pro who knew a storyline or another opportunity was only around the corner. She knew her value and was secure in herself. A national treasure who shaped the entire industry. Thank you Eileen. I’m sure there was a pink feather boa waiting for you just inside the pearly gates.”
So, what did you think about the sentiments shared by Martha on the legendary Eileen Fulton? Would you agree, as we have previously noted, that Lisa as played by Eileen, was really the prototype for all soap opera “bad girls” to follow? Did you appreciate the fact that while having a more diminished role over the last few decades of ATWT, Eileen took it in stride? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

‘As the World Turns’ Legendary Eileen Fulton Passes Away at 91
The iconic Eileen Fulton, who was daytime’s first bad girl as Lisa Miller on As the World Turns, has died at the age of 91. According to the obituary on her passing, Fulton died earlier this week on July 14th in Asheville, North Carolina, after a period of declining health.
Fulton was born Margaret Elizabeth McLarty in Asheville on September 13, 1933. After studying acting in New York City, she changed her name to Eileen Fulton, when in 1960 she was cast in the film, Girl of the Night, co-starring with Anne Francis.
Eileen would change the face of daytime drama when in 1960 she was cast as the disruptor to the family dynamic, Lisa Miller, on the CBS soap opera. Throughout her ATWT run, the character of Lisa would eventually be married eight times to: Bob Hughes (1960–1964), John Eldridge (1965–1967), Michael Shea (1969–1970), Grant Coleman (1975–1979) ,Whit McColl (1982–1984), Earl Mitchell (1986–1987), Eduardo Grimaldi (1994–1995), and Martin Chedwyn (1996).

Photo: CBS
ATWT historians know that Lisa’s full name by the time the series went off the air in 2010 was: Lisa Miller Hughes Eldridge Shea Colman McColl Mitchell Grimaldi Chedwyn. Fulton played the role with only brief interruptions until the show was cancelled that year making her one of the longest-running tenured soap opera actors in US history. Other performers who took on the role of Lisa in Fulton’s absence included: Jane Powell, Maeve McGuire, Pamela King, Betsy Von Furstenberg, Lynn Rogers and Carmen Duncan.
Throughout her time on ATWT, it was Fulton’s eagerness to play Lisa as a villainess that contributed to the character’s popularity and therefore its longevity. She was inducted into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame in 1998 and was awarded a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. In addition, in 1988, Fulton received her first-ever Daytime Emmy Award nomination in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Daytime Drama Series.
The legendary star was also infamous for the grandmother clause she inserted into her contract that guaranteed she would never have to play a grandmother on the soap. In an interview with the LA Times in 2000 she shared, “At that time, grandmothers had no romance at all – and I wasn’t about to let that happen to me.” At some point, this all changed and she became OK with the idea of grandmother-hood. At one point, ATWT fans were so angry at the manipulative villainess played by Fulton that she had to employ a bodyguard to protect her.

Photo: CBS
When Futon stepped away from the show, at one point, she left to star in ATWT”s 1965 spinoff Our Private World, which aired Wednesday and Friday nights on CBS. In the story, Lisa had fled Oakdale after dumping Bob to move to Chicago, where she wed the wealthy John Eldridge (Nicolas Coster, who later would play Eduardo Grimaldi). Our Private World was canceled after four months on the air, and Fulton went back to As the World Turns in 1966.
When Eileen received her Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, she was part of a group of actors who also received the honor that year including: her ATWT co-stars, Don Hastings and Helen Wagner, plus Ruth Warrick, Frances Reid, John Clarke, Ray MacDonnell, Don Hastings, Jeanne Cooper, and Rachel Ames.

Photo: JPI
For a time early in her career, Fulton not only was appearing in As The World Turns, which at that time was broadcast live, she was simultaneously appearing on Broadway in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and off-Broadway in the long-running musical The Fantasticks.
Fulton performed her cabaret act for many years in venues around New York and Los Angeles. In 1970, she co-authored her first autobiography, How My World Turns. In 1995 she co-authored a second autobiography, As My World Still Turns, to celebrate her 35th anniversary on As the World Turns. She also authored a series of mystery novels. In 2019, Eileen retired from show business and moved to Black Mountain, North Carolina.

Photo: JPI
She is survived by her brother, Charles Furman McLarty (Karen) of Black Mountain; niece Katherine Morris (David) and their children, Everly Ann Morris and Easton Lane Morris of Fort Mill, S.C.; and sister-in-law Chris Page McLarty of Camden, Maine. She was pre-deceased by her parents and her brother, James Fulton McLarty.

ATWT Alum Tala Ashe Scores Tony Award Nomination; OLTL Alum Jonathan Groff and ‘Glee’ Favorite Darren Criss Also Receive Nods
Nominations for the 78th annual Tony Awards were announced Thursday morning honoring the best in the recent Broadway season.
The awards will be presented on June 8th live from Radio City Music Hall live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ with Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, a Tony winner for The Color Purple, hosting the show.
While musicals Buena Vista Social Club, Maybe Happy Ending and Death Becomes Her topped the nominations with 10 each, the list of Hollywood names and former soap opera alums who will be part of Broadway’s bigges makes it interesting drama for Broadway’s biggest nights.

Photo: JPI
In addition, there were big time snubs including: Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal and Kieran Culkin, who failed to make the nominations list, while other big names including: George Clooney are in the running.
Soap fans should take note that Tala Ashe (ex-Ameera Ali-Aziz, As the World Turns – 2007) scored her first-ever Tony nomination in the Best Featured Actress in a play category for her performance in English. The play takes place in an Iranian classroom where four adult students and their teacher leapfrog through a linguistic playground, this is a funny, stunning triumph about the universal foibles of language and miscommunication.

Photo: JPI
On As the World Turns, Ashe’s Ameera became involved with Luke and Noah, after she fled Iraq when her mother died, after her protector, Noah’s father, the Colonel, was reassigned and imprisoned. Once in Oakdale, when he heard her sad story, Noah (Jake Silbermann) agreed to a marriage of convenience, upsetting then boyfriend Luke Snyder (Van Hansis).
Once again, Tony Award winner, Jonathan Groff (ex-Henry Mackler, One Life to Live -2007) had scored another nomination. This year for his star turn as Bobby Darin in the new musical, Just in Time. Groff is competing in the category alongside former Glee star, Darren Criss, who is nominated for his work as a retired robot in Maybe Happy Ending.

Photo: JPI
Interestingly enough, Jeb Brown who is nominated in the Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for Dead Outlaw, was formerly the bandmate of Beyond the Gates and General Hospital star, Jon Lindstrom.
Audra McDonald made Tony history scoring her record-setting 11th overall nomination, this year for her starring role in the musical revival of Gypsy. However, she will face-off with former Pussycat Dolls singer, Nicole Scherzinger, who plays Norma Desmond in the latest adaption of Sunset Boulevard, where she is getting all the raves this Broadway season.

That was a great interview! Great to get some insight into Luke from the man himself. Love his comments about Luke/Reid!
What a fantastic interview! I love the questions and the answers we got from VAN. I am so happy you made Van tell us so much about his thoughts about LUKE’s storyline. I am also so excited about VAN’s movie! Thank you very much!
Van is fantastic! I love Luke’s storyline and this interview is great!
Thank you for this great interview with Van! He’s such a lovely person.
I’m so proud to be a fan of Van’s. He’s a class act. I will really miss watching him play Luke Snyder. I love hearing his insights about the storylines and actors. He certainly deserves an Emmy next year.
For some reason I can’t leave my own comment, so I’ll just second everything Babs said!
Great interview! Van is such an intelligent and articulate young man.
Van Hansis is made of perfection! I love him so much! Great interview! I love every thing Van said. Thank you!
Is it just me or is Van quite articulate and well-spoken? Surprised to know too that Jake and him hang out when they’re not working; so they do get on. Good interview overall.
Van is very articulate! And Jake and Van are very good friends off screen.
To be quite honest, I think Van is an excellent actor and in general an all rounder, but I find it hard to believe they’re actually good friends out of work. I don’t think they hate each other either , they’re just colleagues.
Um, why? Van is good friends with a lot of the younger cast. But I guess Van was lying when he said that Jake is one of his, quote, “best, best, best friends.” And the photos of them at non-ATWT related events must be photoshopped.
Van’s movie trailer : https://www.occupantmovie.com/ That’s WOW!
Another wonderful interview with Van, Michael! We’re losing Luke but whatever the future holds for Van, I’m there. : )
Thanks for the great interview MF and Van. I’m still, however drying my tears as the saga of NUKE is very special to me. It took 2 magical actors and great writing to bring this wonderful tale to fruition.
I have to say that I am not a fan of Reid and Luke. For me it’s NUKE all the way and I am hoping it ends with the two of them riding off into the sunset together.
are you crazey luke with reid all the way noah hit the road already
Did you see today’s episode??? Can you honestly still say you think Luke belongs with Noah??? Even Noah thinks Luke and Reid belong together. Reid gave it all up for the love of Luke…..You don’t find greater love than that…
Thank you for the fabulous interview with Van! He is so talented and I look forward to following his career since I’m sure he will do great things. ATWT really struck gold when they cast Van Hansis and again when they found Eric Sheffer Stevens for him to act against. If ATWT has to end then I’m glad Van gets a final story that is great and one that he is excited about.
It’s not much of a triangle if the viewers have to wonder if Jake (Noah) is even a remember of the show the way they have him disappearing all the time.
I love Van and wish him, Jake and his co-stars the best of luck after ATWT is gone.
luke belongs with reid forever
Amen to that comment
Another link to VAN’s movie “Occupant”: https://www.vimeo.com/11909667 That looks amazing! And Van looks HOT!
i want luke to choose reid over noah..luke and reid made for each other..luke and reid belong together..luke and reid meant to be together..luke and reid are meant to be..they just need to be together i love to see luke marryed to reid and become a doctor for kids and live happley ever after with reid without noah in the pitcher
Fantastic Van and fantastic interview. Thank you!
Michael, it is sad that this actor and his compatriots will be gone from the scene in the fall. Van should definitely be proud that he affected so many lives with his portrayal of Luke. He will make his mark in movies, I’m sure. This is a great interview because Van is very open with his feelings, especially the gay storyline that has turned into a triangle between the three men. It will be interesting to see how the writers bring this to a close in September. I am disheartened that another soap will bite the dust. The fans will be going crazy. No one is ready for this to happen again. We will have to enjoy this the best we can, but with tears in our eyes…..
I am very proud to be Van Hansis’ fan!
Thanks for the wonderful interview with Van. It’s always funny to see what Van has to say.
I wish we had more to read about Van: another interview with Van would be awesome!
I wish nothing but the best for Van and his future. He is an amazing talent, and I hope to see a lot more of him after ATWT. However, it’s very disappointing to read that they will waste the last few months of this show on Reid. In addition to his copious personality flaws, I don’t like the person that Luke becomes around him. I’m probably not going to waste time watching unless I get some news that Noah is going to be around a lot (which would be a most welcome change).
Luke will be the character I’ll miss the most when ATWT will end.
Ditto!
Thanks Michael for the terrific interview. It’s exciting to hear that the triangle will go through the end of the show, and get even more air time. I’m thoroughly enjoying it.
I’m not sure why the ATWT writers think viewers want to see some middle-aged man paired with a 22-year-old college dropout, especially when they have such a treasure in Luke and Noah as a couple. No other couple on daytime comes even close to Van and Jake’s chemistry.
Um, no offense, but what are you, twelve? I’m probably a year or two older then Reid’s supposed to be, and it’ll be at LEAST another decade before I consider myself to be middle-aged, thank you.
I’d say there’s a 10-12 year difference in Luke and Reid’s ages, which is not a ridiculous age difference, and nothing at ALL in television standards. (Frankly, if we were talking about an older man and a younger woman, most American TV programs and movies would think *nothing* about pairing a couple with an age difference of 20 years or more.)
As for what ATWT is thinking, I suspect it’s that more *adult* viewers would much rather see a pair that generates as much heat and passion as Luke and Reid do every single moment they’re on screen — whether they’re kissing or fighting or even just setting the air on fire with the eyesex — as opposed to the lifeless teenage puppy love we’ve endured for three years with Nuke.
I thank ATWT every day for giving us Luke/Reid, and I hope we get much, much more of the same from now through September.
I totally agree with LadyS.
I have a gay son age 23 (soon 24) who has been living with his boyfriend age 34 for the past 2 years so the age difference between Luke and Reid is just normal to me.
I lost intrest in the Nuke storyline because it didn’t portraited real gay persons (No normal human wait a year to have sex, least at all gay men)
Then I took a look into the story line again 2 weeks ago and I was suprised about the acting and writing the story has taken.
As every one says the chemistry between Van and Eric is amacing and are able to play out all the emotions you go throught as a couple in Love (Also the sexual attraction is very believeble). So now I’m a hooked LuRE fan and are sad to find out that the show stops in September.
All the best wishes for the future to the cast!
I guess you only watched for Nuke and didn’t see the Lusty relationship, which was one of the most popular couples of the decade. Lucy was an 18 year old “princess” and Dusty was at least twice her age. But despite the odds against them, they fell in love.
So it isn’t a stretch to think ATWT fans could look past something insignificant like age and instead appreciate the fantastic chemistry Luke and Reid have.
Van creates chemistry with everyone. His pairing with Eric is great because Van is showing another fascinating side of Luke that I love to watch too.
I believe Van Hansis has a huge range of emotion and expression. I love what he does with his eyes, his lopsided smile and just the way he tilts his head. As Luke he is perfect opposite Reid because Reid needs someone with Luke’s gentle patience and his ability to take over in a crisis and because Reid is always in crisis. Reid gives Luke a semblance of order in his professional life and reins in his wandering emotional dependence on the past. Luke has money, power, personality, great looks and a gentle spirit. Reid is clearly smitten. As for Van, what’s not to like? he’s gorgeous!!
I totally agree with you!
selma, I totally agree with you!
Great article. I’m loving the Luke/Reid pairing and am so glad that ATWT has stepped up to the plate with a fantastic storyline for Van in the last few months of the show. The chemistry between Luke and Reid is fantastic, and I love who Luke is with Reid – stronger, confident, more adult. Luke and Noah were a wonderful first love story, but in reality, most people don’t end up with their first loves forever. Both Noah and Luke have grown and changed, and though they love each other, I think they would be better as friends.
With Reid, Luke has a chance at a strong, adult, equal relationship, and I hope the writers and producers are true to the storyline they’ve created here and let it happen.
I totally agree…..
Reid , there is no question, very exciting . Great chemistry between Van and Eric, and Luke and Reid. The end will be unforgettable if these two are together. Fan for over 50 years. Thank you The Luke and Noah duo was almost platonic I felt. The new couple bring more believable moments. They belong together, Reid was a great choice.
I think Van nailed this interview with thoughtful comments on everything that would be just how I’d hope he’d answer. Myrna – so glad to hear someone who’s a 50-year fan excited about this story and about Reid. Thank you for speaking up! I go back about 25-30 years with ATWT, making me about 5 years older than Reid. Luke’s appeal as a younger man is two-part. 1) He’s acting older than his age, taking responsibility for the hospital wing and Reid’s license review, etc, and 2) Let’s face it – Van is not 22. He’s 28 or 29 and looks very much like a grown man. So intellectually I know he’s officially 22, but I’ve mentally SORASed him to 28-29 because that’s how he’s acting. (And even at 22 I find this much more compelling than Dusty/Lucy which really made me do the age-difference cringe.) Sorry – back to Myrna’s quote. ITA – unforgettable and a great choice. Couldn’t have said that any better.
ABSOLUTELY
Luke belongs with Reid, talk about a hot couple.
Would absolutely LOVE to see you do a video interview together with Van Hansis and Eric Sheffer Stevens! Would be interesting to find out from the guys:
– From both of them, what are some of their favorite Dr. Reid one liners that Eric so charmingly executed, delivered & acted? Reid’s one liners are so freaking hilarious!
Dr. Reid Oliver is such a unique and charming character to watch…insults and all! Fans and myself have become completely hooked on Dr. Reid’s appealing character and Luke & Reid’s romantic relationship, in particular, thanks to Eric’s amazing acting skills, comedic delivery, and amazing good looks. I don’t think I’ve ever been as mesmerized by a TV character….especially from a soap opera!
Wishful thinking perhaps on my part but, here’s hoping that the ATWT writers will make Dr. Reid even more appealing & endearing to audiences (and especially to Luke!), by gracing us with Dr. Reid doing his Justin Timberlake impression!! LOL
I’m more mesmerized by VAN/LUKE.
Yeah, me too…
A video interview with Van and Eric would be amazing. I loved the interview Mr. Fairman did with Brett Claywell and Scott Evans.
The romance with Dr. Oliver has been smokin’ hot and the best material for Van in quite some time. I hope they can keep the intesity up, because I’m loving it!
It’s fun hearing Van’s unsentimental thoughts on Luke. I wish him all the best in the future. He’s super talented!
Van is truly the only actor who talks about his character with distanciation and objectivity. That shows that Van loves playing his character, but he knows talking about him with criticism. I love Van and I love Luke.
I truly feel that Luke and Reid should end up together. Noah may have been his first love, but when Luke and Reid send sparks flying all over the place, it’s more like real love. Reid completes Luke and they in sense become one. 🙂
I hope Luke & Reid will be together when the show ends. Noah’s immature & he only thinks about himself. Luke is a better person when he’s around Reid, he’s more confident & stable, & happy, when he’s around Noah, he’s whiny & clingy & needy & if you watch his face, really unhappy.
It may just be the writing, but for over a year now Luke & Noah have been like best friends without even the benefits, every time Luke tried touching Noah he’d jerk away, sorry just don’t see the attraction of someone who acts like that.
yeah i really think luke and ried belong together
Van is so great, as an actor as well as a person! I am really glad ATWT have stepped up their game and gave Van a meaty storylline and some great soap-writing to conclude his performance on ATWT. I am loving the chemistry between Van and Eric Sheffer Stevens (what a find!) and make not secret of rooting for a LuRe pairing in the end, but I am sure Van will give a great performance in any storyline he will be given, as he has in the past. All the best to Van for his future! I, for sure, will be following his career.
Yes, Van is a fantastic person!
I really love how Luke is played by Van. Van makes Luke the most fascinating character, being so complex and showing so different sides of his endearing personality. I agree that Luke is happier around Reid. I totally how Noah treats Luke like a child or always making him feel bad. Luke deserves so much better! I want this Luke’s storyline be the one Luke will find his true LOVE and HAPPINESS.

Luke looks happier with Reid, but I want to see more of Luke and of his happiness on screen.
Wonderful interview with a wonderful actor. Van Hansis deserves the consistent praise he receives because he is one of the most talented actors I’ve seen. I truly hope he goes on to work more and becomes a bigger star. I’ll miss him as Luke but at least we’ll have the memories (and YT clips) of what an entertaining actor he’s been.
Team Reid! He is Luke’s future! (And I say this as a former Nuke fan.)
As for Van, I wish you had asked him about his hair. I mean seriously, WHAT has been going on with his hair?
Great Interview!!! Loved every part of it!! Van is great. Thanks for the article Michael!!! LuRe is amazing together.
Great interview with Van. I love his view of the character. Great insight as to the character along with amazing ability to show us all of Luke’s sides.
These past few months Van seems to have stepped up the game even more. He works well with so many of the other actors on ATWT so I’m not surprised that he clicked with ESS. I was pleasantly surprised at the blazing hot chemistry between Luke/Reid. I never expected Luke to express that type of passion, snark and playfulness again. I have to thank Van (and the writers, and even ESS for giving him something to play against) for Luke recouperating some of his more interesting qualities again.
Van will definitely have enough Emmy material to select something great for next year’s nominations. I wish him luck in his future endeavors.
Michael, get it right! It’s “Yinz [guys] going dahntahn?” 😉 (Van does this accent very well!) I love Van’s descriptions of Luke with no ambition, etc. One really wonders what Reid sees in him! He must have just let Grimaldi industries go to pot after Damien left. 😉 For all the frustrations of crazy soap opera plots, I am grateful for Luke, Noah, and Eric. Especially Luke, who has helped normalize “gay” for lots of people. Van portrays him brilliantly, selling even the most contrived plots. I wish him the best.
Oops, I meant Luke Noah and Reid. My bad.
Hey Bonnie Half-eleven!
Thank you so much for your correction of the Pittsburgh accent. We are implementing it right now. None of us in Lala land, know a Pittsburgh accent and my entire team struggled with this, even though I know how Van said it during the interview. I do hope you enjoyed the other parts of the interview though.
Best always,
Michael
It was a great interview! Thanks for publishing it.
Luke/Reid are a pleasure to watch.I hope @ the end ATWT decides to put them together b/c of the maturity and chemistry of these two and not b/c they feel that Nuke were together for 3yrs.or whatever that they should end the show with them.I only watch the show 4 Lure. There’s just somethingabout Van/Eric’s chemistry into their characters that is undeniable.I,truly don’t see the chemistry with Nuke. It’s like on Dawson’s Creek, when the show ended and I was so glad when Joey picked Pacey,b/c they had such rare chemistry that Joey didn’t have with Dawson, that’s the same way I feel about Lure/Nuke.I see Nuke as friends, and L/R as much, much more if TPTB really let the writers do their job,and not cave in to some misguided history crap they intend on doing the end of this wonder soap!
If Luke and Reid don’t end up having sex, I’ll be very pissed off. You can’t build up so much sexual tension (expertly played by Van and Eric) and then have no payoff!
Hey,does anyone know the number 4 ATWT? I would like to share with them my love of all things Van/Eric and LuRe. They just take my breath away! LOL!
You can e-mail to ATWT: atwt@cbs.com
Well, it was good that I just found this interview and could remind myself that Van is a cool, funny guy, because in today’s episode Luke was a total whiny idiot! I didn’t realize I was so invested in the Luke and Reid pairing until I had to watch Luke go and ANNIHILATE it.
But I know this isn’t for episode discussion… I think Van could become a big time character actor. Not the obvious choice for him, but I think he would really rock it.
You shouldn’t confuse Van and Luke. Van is an actor playing a character whose words are written on paper. Of course Van is a cool, funny guy who plays a conflicted and complicated character. Plus, Van makes Luke very human: every human being lies or makes regretful decisions, so Luke being confused and acting like he is doing in this storyline makes him totally real. I can relate and I feel for Luke because he is suffering a lot because of his feelings for two men who don’t understand him and where he is standing with them. Go VAN.
Keisha, what you say is totally off base. Luke is a character played by a very talented actor, Van Hansis.
Keisha, ita with everything you wrote.I was so disappointed with Luke today. He was so whiny, and clingy with noah! I couldn’t believe what he was saying to both noah/reid.I still love LuRe though.Still adore Van/Eric
I like Van, but “Nuke” never did much for me. The new storyline is great! I guess I’m just a sucker for “arrogant jerk softened by love” stories.
It’s great to see ATWT getting attention in its final months (loyal viewer for almost 25 years here!). Interview Colleen Zenk Pinter next!
I think Luke is so conflicted, caught between strong feelings for two men. Luke is hurting because of his tormented feelings and he can’t decide what he wants right now. Each time Luke gets back to Noah, he gets hurt and badly treated, and it’s like Noah doesn’t really love him, or only loves him whan things are good for him. Reid looks strongly attached to Luke, but he doesn’t understand that Luke has history with his ex and that it can’t be forgotten easily. Luke is really hurting and he doesn’t want to hurt the men he loves. Plus no one seems to understand where LUKE stands: Noah was so harsh with him with his “You feel guilty, yed? Good!… I have my sight back, i don’t need you!” Noah did a lot of mistakes and treated Luke badly during months and now he gets angry again without taking the time to understand what Luke endured during all this time he was neglected. Then Reid kicked him out which let Luke totally alone, without no one to listen to how tormented he is. I hope Luke and Reid will get back together and that Noah will apologize to Luke for the way he treated Luke. I really can’t stand noah’s attitude. I am for Luke to be with Reid and to be treated better, as the great boyfriend he is when he shows his love.
That’s what I want to see too! Luke deserves to be loved for who he is.
I was so sick of noah always yelling at Luke and treating him like crap! Luke deserves better!
I really think that if LuRe doesn’t end up together 80% of the viewers will be very unhappy.
I’m one of them… LuRe please
You are not very good with your math are you. The fact is that it will be NUKE in the end, as it should be and the fans will love it. We all will, and I bet you will too. Don’t worry no one has to see your tears of joy….Yeah NUKE to the END!
I WANT REID TO TAKE LUKE BACK AND CRUE HIM WITH PASSIONATTE KISSING I WANT THEM TO DO THE DEED ALREADY I LOVE TO SEE THEM MARRYED.WITCH SOAP OPERA IS VAN AND ERIC GOING TO THAT I CAN WATCH IT
Luke and Reid should get at least one love scene! Van is so great portraying love and desire!
Van is so HOT!
Now that the triangle is officially in place and Van Hansis, Eric Sheffer Stevens and Jake Silbermann can clearly display their talents we can also note the co-dependency between Luke and Noah, their need to be together in order to complete an equation they carry in their heads regarding family and the defensive angle Luke has taken on to deal with his feelings for Reid. Reid is quickly building his armor back up to ward off the tricky emotions that go along with opening your heart in the first place. Only clever writing can fix this to our satisfaction because most of us know how it plays out in reality.
I love you Van and hope your character luke will end up with Reid.Even though there will always be a special place in your heart for Noah,I think your time together has passed and you and Reid belong together….As a fan of this wonderful soap, I am so heartbroken that it will go off the air in Sept.It was so well done from day one and i have been a fan since it began. There aren’t too many shows I like on Tv but i have been a fan since ATWT began. It is so consistantly good and the most sensitve subjects are so well done.If there is any way this show can continue I hope and pray there is a way.you should be so proud of the way you portray Luke…with sensitivity and dignity. What a wonderful actor you are.Thank you and the whole cast for giving some of the best performances on any soap.Good luck!!!
I watch the new video interview of VAN HANSIS for “Occupant” and all I can say is that VAN is gorgeous in HD and that I can’t wait to watch his movie!
Van is so beautiful…
VAN has a talent to make his interviews so interesting! “Occupant” looks great!
I watched the 17 first minutes of ‘Occupant’ and I can teel you that Van is fabulous in it!!!!!!!! I am looking forward t the whole movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me too! WHat a great movie! Van is excellent! I want to see whole thing.
I LOVE LUKE & NOAH FOREVER TOGETHER.
I WANT MY BOYS TOGETHER.
HAPPY AND LUKE & NOAH.
I LOVE JAKE SILBERMANN AND VAN HANSIS PERFECT TOGETHER.
