Y&R EP and Head Writer Josh Griffith Previews 2026 in Genoa City: “We Have Some Fun Surprises Up Our Sleeve”
As 2025 winds down, the top-rated daytime drama series, The Young and the Restless executive producer and head writer, Josh Griffith is teasing that he will be putting pedal to the metal, as he previewed what fans should look for as 2026 begins and several stories are reaching a conclusion, or just beginning.
Speaking with TV Insider in what’s ahead in the new year, Griffith, expressed, “It’s going to be a very exciting, suspenseful, and romantic winter and spring. It’s going to be jam-packed with intrigue, mystery, suspense, and love. We have some fun surprises up our sleeve for 2026.”
But, what could those “surprises” be? More returns? Back-from-the-deads? An unexpected romance? Old rivalries? a murder Mystery? Here’s some of what the head scribe shared about several of his key plots.

MATT CLARK
“I think we’ve got a really exciting story coming up that’s the continuation of Matt Clark’s (Roger Howarth) reign of terror. Matt is going to make a lot of new enemies and cause even more problems for Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Sharon (Sharon Case) for Noah (Lucas Adams) and Sienna (Tamara Braun), and for the whole Newman family. And just when we think he’s out of the picture, we find out he’s not, and we’re heading towards a huge showdown that will incorporate a lot of aspects of the past in a very dramatic way.”
VICTOR AND JACK’S FEUD SERVED WITH A NEW TWIST
“I love that we’re back to reigniting Victor (Eric Braeden) and Jack’s (Peter Bergman) feud. There’s going to be massive, massive fallout for Jack and Diane (Susan Walters) off of some of Victor and Nikki’s actions to slap Jack down. Cane’s (Billy Flynn) return is going to force Victor and Jack from hating each other to have to work together for the greater good, which will be interesting to see if they can pull that off without killing each other. And as this whole AI story continues to unfold and wreak its havoc on the dynasties of Genoa City, we may be seeing Billy (Jason Thompson) and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) finally coming out on top, winning, getting something big, but at what price?”

MYSTERIOUS WAYS
According to Griffith, Devon (Bryton James) and Abby (Melissa Ordway) will be at the epicenter of a big mystery that somehow draws in Mariah (Camryn Grimes) Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) and Daniel (Michael Graziadei) (and there is a whole other story going on that needs resolution for the couple known as Teriah and the growing attraction Tessa finds herself in with Daniel). Also look for Christine (Lauralee Bell) to be the lawyer to, “help someone who’s in big trouble out of that story.”
LOVERS AND OTHERS
In the romance department, Griffith teased that Victoria (Amelia Heinle) and Nate (Sean Dominic) will get their groove back on. “We’ll see some romance back between Victoria and Nate. They’re going to see if they want to try again after Victor kind of blew that whole thing up.”
Meanwhile, in the Holden/Audra/Claire/Kyle quad, the head writer said enthusiastically, “I’m really excited about where we can go with Holden (Nathan Owens). Audra (Zuleyka Silver) and Holden are going to do everything they can to keep their past a secret, and Claire (Hayley Erin) is going to do everything she can to bring it out into the light. And when it finally comes out, there’s going to be a lot of fallout.”

JESS IS THE BEST
2026 will mark the 40th anniversary of Daytime Emmy winner, Jess Walton in the role of Jill Foster Abbott and Josh Griffith says its one milestone, “that we will definitely recognize.”
So, which storylines teased by Y&R’s EP and head writer, Josh Griffith, have you most intrigued for 2026? Which storylines would you like to see end in the new year? Share you thoughts via the comment section below.
Josh Griffith talks a good game in these interviews, unfortuanetly it doesn’t always translate to the screen. What Y&R really needs is new writers.
As a longtime viewer, I love a storyline that reaches into history. It seems there have been too many such of late, and some are more obscure or rewrite current plot beyond belief (re: Claire). And I am weary of women being abducted and trapped. It is a way of life for Sharon. Please end this AI silliness and nebulous corporate shenanigans. I would like some genuine new (not recycled) romance, solid couplings, real suspense, and forward movement of story and character (re: give Phyllis a foundation). There should be a way to bring in the past or new characters onto the canvas. I recall fondly teen and young people storylines and hope Katie, Johnny, and Connor may age into something exciting.
I AGREE WITH YOU 100%. We need new writers. Josh brains is scrambled eggs. I can guess what will happen before it happens.
no to victoria and nate ! abby and devon are a bore and the mariah storyline is just doa Definitely interested in the abbot/Newman storyline as well as nick and sharon I’m also interested in the Audra clair holden storyline!
Victor thinks he is God and he is always willing
I hope something will happen to him to make him think otherwise
Hate the Daniel and Tessa storyline. As a gay man I find it offensive if it turns sexual. Do a decent story that includes a monogamous gay men or women. Not two confused and desperate people. After fifty years I am considering stopping the show. This is offensive
I totally agree. what drew me to the show was the fact that we got to see two woman fall in love and their storyline was done with with care and class. And the chemistry between them was off the charts.
This storyline with Daniel is forced, confusing and disrespectful to what took them 50yrs to finally do. They could have done better.
