TVG Canada reveals pre-pre Daytime Emmy nominee list & we explain the voting process!

Ah, the game is on, and what a tangled web we weave in the soap world! TV Guide Canada’s Nelson Branco today revealed and compiled a list from each of the daytime soap operas of the performers who are now eligible for this year’s Daytime Emmy competition. And, in the first list you will find some big shockeroos!  Namely,Van Hansis is not competing from As the World Turns after his final year of amazing performances. Then Y&R newbie, the talented soap veteran, Tristan Rogers is in the lead category, and OLTL’s  scene-stealer, Robin Strasser entered herself into supporting group,  plus a plethora of other head-scratchers.

On-Air On-Soaps today, after receiving numerous inquiries from our readers and fans, had a direct discussion with NATAS’s Daytime Executive Director, Brent Stanton, who adminsters the Emmy voting process.  To clarify: all soaps nominate performers they feel deserving of a nomination in each of the acting categories.  However, that does not exclude other actors on the show from also submitting their names on the ballot in the category they deem for themselves, if they feel they have emmy-worthy material to submit.

Then, performers who are registered with NATAS for the Emmy voting process, vote in the acting categories, cross-soap, and it is their votes that determine the pre-nomination ballot which will be announced on February 25th.   No reels of the actors work are submitted for viewing in the pre-pre nomination process.  Once selected as an official pre-nominee, then those actors will have to submit one show of their work to be judged in the competition.

Stanton also expressed that he did his best to encourage all As the World Turns performers that wanted to take part in the Emmy process this year to do so, even saying he assisted with helping them get the paperwork, etc, in order, since there was no one left at that show anymore, since it’s cancellation last fall.

View the complete list of pre-pre nominees here and then let us know any glaring omissions in your opinion,  or who you think deserves a pre-nomination!

Thank you, Michael, for explaining that real complicated process of the Emmy pre-pre-, pre- and just noms procedure 🙂 .

I´m really happy to see Eric Sheffer Stevens on the list 🙂 . I want him to win an Emmy. His performance was just too remarkable to go without a special honor.

Van Hansis deserves an Emmy more than everyone else! His emotional scenes were so wonderfully gut-wrenching!

Eric deserves an Emmy more than anyone else. Without him a lot of people wouldn´t even have watched this soap. Van didn´t submit himself, so actually the thing is eaten. Tell Van, how disappointed you are. I f.e. can´t change a thing.

It is a total shame that Van Hansis isn’t included in that list! I am sure he didn’t submit his work, God knows why. I am totally sad that Van Hansis won’t be, AGAIN, recognized for his amazing work!

OMG Van Hansis not submitting his work or having it submitted is so sad. This should have been his year to win an emmy.Michael , can you please find out why?I was and am a LuRe fan and while I loved them both as a couple and admired both of their acting skills ,Reid could not stand alone whereas Luke could.Van is such a wonderful actor and he’s so real.I hope he’s not frustrated with ATWT going off and trying to find a decent job.It must be so tough for him.Van if you read this please know so many of your… Read more »

So now it begins … . Reid could have totally stood alone, he actually most of the time did. It´s not Eric´s fault, that Van didn´t submit himself. Eric totally deserves to be nominated.

I love Eric and he is deserving too, but in my mind Van should win this year. Why he didn’t submit is a mystery to me.He had so many good scenes , especially when Reid died and he was so devastated!!!

mmc, I totally agree with you. Van deserves to win en Emmy. I don’t understand why he didn’t submit his work. He was so consistent and in several episodes, he was more than perfect!

Van is a good actor, and of course he deserved to be nominated, BUT he didn´t submit himself. Maybe he would have been nominated in another category anyway, I don´t know about the choices, who is “leading” and who is “supporting” actor etc..

But I want Eric to win his more than deserved Emmy.

It´s good, that this is a big world with billions of different opinions … .

Eric (Sheffer Stevens), you are the best. Go and get your Emmy 🙂 . You are the most brilliant actor I have ever seen. You didn´t play ‘Reid’, you were ‘Reid’.

As a viewer who’s witnessed countless Emmy snubs and wins over the past 30+ years all I have to say is it’s astonishing to find Brandon Buddy from One Life To Live absent from the nomination list, while a few talentless newbies entered themselves into the race. Guy is crazy if he didn’t submit material from his last days! He did an impeccable job. I would have hoped someone would have acknowledged that behind the scenes over there. Hate or love his character, Brandon Buddy has grown so much over the years as an actor and he deserved a nod.… Read more »

I’m really happy for Eric Sheffer Stevens, he definitely deserves to be nominated. But I can’t believe Van Hansis isn’t on the list. He was incredible this past year, especially when Reid died. I don’t know how this all works, but I’m really scratching my head about Van.

My son just sent me some E mails with statements from Van Hansis as to why he didn’t submit an Emmy. They were on his facebook. He seems to be ok with not submitting.even though those of us that love him know this should have been his year to win, we have to respect his choice. Go to lovelures board and she wrote the same info my son sent me.I really feel sad because his acting was more than good, it was excellent. When you read what he posted you’ll not only love him as an actor but more than that you’ll see… Read more »

Even though I respect so much what he had to say , I think it can’t hurt to have a nomination and hopefully a win.I hope he’s not making a big mistake by not submitting.2010 was his best year ….it doesn’t make sense to me and i feel really sad about it!

I remain very frustrated with these awards. Thank you for explaining the process for us. Personally, sometimes I scratch my heads on why some people are nominated over and others and win. For example, I think Kirstin Storms is the most talented in the young actresses category on GH in my opinion– remember her heartbreaking scene at Georgie’s funeral a few years ago when she verbally attacked Felicia? Bravo! Did she get an award? No. Kimberly McCullough should have been nominated for her post partum depression story and she wasn’t. I think she deserves to win this year for the… Read more »

Honestly I thought Van Hansis did better work during Luke’s coming out storyline. He should’ve won the Emmy back then.

Good luck, ESS. You’re going to need it.

I can’t believe OLTL’s options. Gina Tognoni in lead? She has had almost nothing to do since her return. I adore her and she should get an award every year just for being on tv, but not a lead actress nomination this year. OLTL should get it together and help her get one next year. Their best bet is Florencia Lozano. It gets scary at supporting actor. Does Sean Ringold really think he is going to get nominated? And what about Shenelle Edmonds? She is adorable…but still seems so unnatural. Even worse……David Gregory for outstanding younger actor? He is just… Read more »

Will someone explain to me why Nic Robuck, Farah Fath and David Gregory bothered to submit themselves? Parading around in the buff is not Emmy worthy nor does it constitute as acting! OLTL’s younger set is far from perfect but Nic is by far the show’s weakest link. My 6 year old can cry on command in a far more believable manor than he can. Eddie Alderson is fantastic, he’ll make the cut. That kid will go far. Jason Tam was another fantastic performer (his talents go way beyond Daytime) but of course this show loves to throw away the… Read more »

Completely forgot about Farah Fath’s work with Stacy on Ice. Definitely see why she submitted her name now. She did a phenomenal job with that particular storyline.

I think Kimberly McCullough and Jason Thompson did amazing work this year with what was certainly a difficult storyline to perform. What astounds me is that Brianna Brown who portrays likely the most despised character on the canvas is also considered in the same category as Kimberly, who gave the performances of her career. While Brown did okay work in this storyline, it was nowhere close to what Kimberly performed. I hope the daytime Emmy committee realizes that Brown’s performances were nowhere close to the work of the other actors in this category and eliminates her from the final ballot.

I absolutely agree. Jason Thompson & Kimberly Mccullough gave a stellar performances. They both deserve nominations.

Brianna Brown doesn’t deserve to be in any Emmy category. She is mediocre at best.

Brianna Brown? Is this a joke? How much talent does it take to repeatedly say “ok” or “alright” and smirk like an idiot?

I see there is a little Van vs. Eric grumbling on here. I love both of them and give them props on their amazing acting skills. But Eric has nothing to do with Van’s decision, and it WAS Van’s decision. He has stated his reasoning, and I repect him for that. He also said on his FB page that he thought Eric would win. I am assuming they are each OK with their decisions. I would love to see Eric win. I would say, instead of pitting them against each other and saying one could stand on his own and… Read more »

Pride Month Celebrating LGBTQ+ Soap Supercouples: Nuke, Kish, Otalia & WilSon … Which Stands the Test of Time?

June is Pride Month, the time when across the U.S and the world there are celebrations and commemorations to recognize all who identify as LGBTQ and their allies.

Daytime soap operas have had a rocky road when it comes to the representation of same-sex couples.  The soaps have been at one time leaders in portraying key social issues of our time, as well as treading lightly on other subjects, as to its concerns to ‘turn-off’ its core audiences.

When you look back at the groundbreaking first same-sex weddings, and the first gay kiss, the soaps have come far in some ways in their representations of gay characters, but there is always work to be done to serve and to shed light on the under-represented.

As we reflect back to the then and the now, which LGBTQ soap supercouple remains your favorite and had made a lasting impact? Let’s take a look at four duos who captivated many viewers.

Nuke  – Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer – As the World Turns

Van Hansis (Luke) and Jake Silbermann (Noah) were a key part of the evolution of, and representation of LGBTQ character on the soaps.  ‘Nuke’, as they were known as, became the first gay male soap couple to share an on-screen kiss back in 2007.  ATWT also became known as the first soap to depict a fully realized romantic male couple as an integral part of the show.  There was plenty of backlash along the way for the long-awaited kiss to happen, but when it did, the show moved forward to tell their love story.

Otalia – Olivia Spencer and Natalia Rivera Aitoro – Guiding Light

When Crystal Chappell (Olivia) and Jessica Leccia (Natalia) began to play the love story of Otalia, they had to show their affection by a kiss on the head, or holding hands.  It took quite some time for GL to move forward to have two women, two moms, no less, share a lip lock. The complicated love story featured Natalia being conflicted to face her true romantic feelings for Olivia, because of her value system and religions upbringing, and that made this all the more riveting and frustrating at the same time.  In the end, the rabid fan base for this duo was so great that Chappell wound up creating her own series, Venice, to honor and serve them, remaining one of the LGBTQ communities greatest allies.

Kish – Kyle Lewis and Oliver Fish – One Life to Live

In 2009, One Life to Live’s Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) was an out lab tech in Llanview, who back in college had a relationship with Officer Oliver Fish (Scott Evans).  It imploded when Oliver denied he was gay.  For years, Oliver remained in the closet, before finally coming out to himself and Kyle.

Kish had been a big success with the media and One Life’s gay audience. LGBTQ-advocacy groups honored the couple and the story.  However, Kish was cut short when the network felt that the data showed that the storyline was not resonating with the show’s core audience.

WilSon – Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis – Days of our Lives

Days of our Lives delivered daytime’s first-ever gay male wedding in 2014, between Will (then played by Guy Wilson) and Sonny (then played by Freddie Smith).

In an interview with EW, Days of our Lives executive producer, Ken Corday shared on the union, “Will and Sonny have been together for a while and it was the natural progression of their love story. We didn’t feel like there was anything we could or couldn’t do, we treated them like any other couple on the canvas and continued to grow their romance as such.”

In addition, the coming out story of Will Horton was critically praised and noteworthy for the performances of Chandler Massey, who won three Daytime Emmys for his work in the Outstanding Younger Actor category 2012, 2013 and 2014.  Freddie Smith also won in the same category in 2015.  Will has been played over the years by Chandler Massey and Guy Wilson, while Sonny has been portrayed by Freddie Smith and Zach Tinker.

There have been several other key LGBTQ couples throughout the course of daytime history including All My Children’s Bianca (Eden Riegel) and Reese (Tamara Braun). These two characters were involved in the first same-sex lesbian wedding on daytime. Problem was … Reese kissed Zach (Thorsten Kaye) before the wedding, making this infuriating for viewers at home.

Other notable LGBTQ couples through the years have included: Bianca and Maggie on All My Children, Mariah and Tessa of The Young and the Restless played bv Camryn Grimes and Cait Fairbanks, Maya and Rick on The Bold and the Beautiful, Lucas and Brad on General Hospital and others.

Which couple do you think has had the most lasting impact on the history of LGBTQ representation on daytime soap operas? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
