TVGN Premiere's: Who Shot The Daytime Soap? Watch The Preview!

We watched so many of our favorite daytime soap operas be sent to soap opera heaven one after the other in the last five years! From Guiding Light, to As the World Turns, to All My Children, to One Life to Live, these iconic shows took their last breathes on network television (although AMC and OLTL were revived for a time this year online by Prospect Park). With those cancellations,  everyone said the fate of the soap opera genre was sealed.  But this year, we have seen the resilience of the genre with higher ratings for the four remaining soap operas!

Premiering this coming Monday, December 16th on TVGN,  the special Who Shot the Daytime Soap? from executive producer, Jim Romanovich president of worldwide media at Associated Television International,  along with the special’s producer, Rob Corsini,  gathered together quite the group of daytime personnel from in front of the camera, and behind the scenes!  They tell the story of the rise and fall, and rise, of what happened to our beloved stories and why they were snuffed out and more!  The show will premiere Monday at 8PMEST/7PMCST, with a sneak preview earlier the same day at 2PMEST/1CST!

Some of the soap favorites that appear in the special include:  Susan Lucci and Alicia Minshew (All My Children), Tristan Rogers, Jacklyn Zeman, William deVry, Sean Kanan and Robin Mattson (General Hospital), Linda Dano (Another World), Judi Evans and Wally Kurth (Days of Our Lives), Crystal Chappell (Venice), Kristoff St. John (The Young and the Restless) and Kathryn Leigh Scott (Dark Shadows), Colleen Zenk (As the World Turns) and Grant Alexsander (Guiding Light).  In addition,  former Daytime EP’s Wendy Riche (GH), Julie Carruthers (AMC) and Maria Arena Bell (Y&R) make appearances.

Romanovich spoke to TV Guide Magazine’s Michael Logan about why he chose to call the special, Who Shot the Daytime Soap? when the soaps are having a comeback: “To be honest, the title is sexy and sizzling and it will get people to gravitate to the show — plus it’s also reminiscent of  ‘Who Shot J.R.?’ which was the ultimate soap whodunit. But, as it turns out, this is also the very best timing, because I can now give this program a happy ending. You will see the full arc of the soaps — the rise, the fall, and now the rise again, not only with the four current network shows but all the great web serials that are being produced by people like Crystal Chappell and Gregori Martin and Sonia Blangiardo. This success allows us to put an exclamation mark on our documentary, but we also ask the question: Why would anyone want to kill such an incredible and popular and lucrative genre? It’s ludicrous! It was sad for me, as a fan of these shows, to not only watch them crumble but to watch them be annihilated from all angles, including from within.”

Watch a preview clip of Who Shot the Daytime Soap? below!  Then, let us know your thoughts on the content, the subject matter, and if you will be tuning-in?

I can’t wait to see this….I’m setting my DVR

I’m surprised by the decisions to include MAB, Julie Carruthers, and the actor that plays Fen.

Why not an appearance by Brian Frons? Where has he disappeared to…and does Anna and Robert have anything to do with it?…lol

sheila carter kidnapped brian frons, i told sheila too torture him. lol

That would still be too good for him…lol

Looks great, unfortunately I don’t have that channel to watch. I believe the death really started in 1999 when NBC cancelled Another World. Dano Plato said at the time, if they can cancel Another World they can cancel anything. Her words rang true. Again I don’t think daytime serial on network television is making a comeback, until I see networks invest in new ones— but soap fans are supporting the last four we got knowing, if we don’t watch, they can and will cancel them and none of us want that.

* that should have read Linda Dano, not Dano Plato– no more eggnog for me. LOL.

At first i thought you meant the late Dana Plato from Different Strokes, and i was going to say i never knew she was a fan of the show!

Thank you— I was searching my brain trying to figure out why I connecting Dano with Plato, sometimes our minds are worse than auto correct and things just get cross connected from the time we have a thought to the time we type— well that and the eggnog. Happy Holidays fellow soap fan.

Happy Holidays to you too…

I would love to see it, but my Comcast does not carry TVGN..
I spent 20 minutes on the phone with Comcast, nada.. 🙁

DVr set hoping they may pick up our reboots

I heard Oprah was interviewing actors from reboots any details as to air dates please I will watch that and only that on her network

Looking forward to seeing it. Now…if I can just locate TVGN on my cable provider…

Hi Rodd: To find your TVGN channel go to http://www.TVGN.tv and type in your zip code in the Channel Finder located on the top right corner of the page.

I put my zip code in, and Comcast does not carry it;
here is the two that did come up;
Dish Network
DirecTV

Thank you.

I have Comcast Cable here in Sacramento Ca and TVGN is on channel 111 here

su0000 don’t trust TVGN.tv as Dish Network and DirecTV were the only ones listed in my zip code but the truth is Comcast does carry TVGN so you may have to channel surf until you find the station in your area.

You are my new best friend, OP! I scanned thru all my 600 channels trying to spot TVGN with no luck but this did the trick. Thanks so much. Looking forward to watching.

I don’t have the TVGN in my cable package. I hope someone can post this special on that video site for fans that don’t have the channel.

Darn, I don’t get the TV Guide Channel, wish I did for I would enjoy watching this. Maybe Hulu Plus will show it, since I still pay for that and don’t even get to see ALL MY CHILDREN which is why I first got Hulu Plus.
Maybe this is off topic a bit but since I can’t stand what happened with AMC on line, being on again, off again, countless legal problems, unbelievable really and I wonder
if this will be mentioned at all on this TV Guide special.

Who killed daytime well how about OJ Simpson his trial went on forever and people lost interest a lot never came back! We have not had good stories in a long time it is ok to blame networks etc. but if you write crap sooner or later people turn out. Gh has had a great run but I for one am tired of the campy storytelling. And B&B teenyboppers who roll their eyes and pose for the camera throw up time. Y&R totally taken over by golden boy who never saw a cue card he did not love. Days can not comment have not watched in 15 years.

imo…Days is really good right now, especially since it isnt as campy as it used to be for years! I dont mind a little campiness in soaps myself but several posts ago i did say camp can wear thin after awhile and some viewers will get tired of it…i miss the 70s era when most soaps were character driven and more down to earth! Y&R is more like the old soap days and perhaps thats the reason it stays in the no. 1 position?

The resurgence of the soaps is just the refugees of the cancelled soaps trying to get interested in another soap. I have tried but none of them can capture my interest like AMC. The fans are doing what the networks want. The networks want to increase the ratings of soaps by canceling other soaps and forcing the fans of the canceled soaps to watch the remaining soaps. I will occasionally watch Y&R. I really don’t watch daytime TV anymore. I come back to this site looking for updates concerning AMC. I hope the remaining soaps survive. I will never watch ABC. Sorry, just won’t.

I wish I could watch, but my Charter cable does not have TVGN, nor does my sister’s Cablevision n CT.

what happen to erica cain ,sunny, brenda, jason, and other soap will they return

very disappointed Canada left out of watching AMC after watching since inception. Perhaps with those viewers added the show would not have been cancelled!

I have ATT-UVERSE how can I get TVGN????????

Mark Consuelos Celebrates One-Year Anniversary as Co-Host of ‘Live’ Alongside Kelly Ripa

Today, April 17th marks a full-year since Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo, All My Children) took over the co-hosting duties of ‘Live” alongside his wife, and longtime co-host, Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, All My Children).

Consuelos replaced Ryan Seacrest who are six seasons decided to be back on the west coast full-time. For Consuelos, now having the opportunity to work off of Ripa as co-hosts has been something of adjustment for him, but viewers have been eating it up.

Live with Kelly and Mark has remained the No. 1 entertainment talk show on television over the past year, growing 3% in average total viewers to 2.23M per episode.  It is also the most-watched daytime talk show in the last year in key demos of women 18-49 and women 25-54. All of this, since the real-life marrieds teamed-up.

Speaking with Deadline, Kelly Ripa shared why the two are gelling on-screen, “I do think that there is something very possibly relatable about our relationship. We have disagreements like a normal couple, and we’re not afraid to let them unfold on the air and in front of America, and I think people find a lot of themselves in that.”

Mark weighed in how he has progressed as a host, and what he could improve at, sharing, “I’d like to get better at my interviewing skills. I’d like to get better at reading a teleprompter…I think I’m getting better at throwing to commercial. The other day in the middle of the show as we go to commercial, my sign off was ‘See you guys around.’ I mean, the show wasn’t over. The most obvious thing to say would be, ‘We’ll be back right after this.’ But I just said, ‘See you around.’ So we went to commercial and one of the producers (goes) ‘What was that?’ I don’t know… So for the next few sign offs, as a joke, I’d say ‘See you around.’ We got a kick out of it.”

Meanwhile, Kelly has given huge props to Mark, “I find Mark utterly compelling, really interesting, super funny, and he’s bold in a way like nobody else. He says what’s on his mind. If he’s thinking it, he says it.  I’ve done this a long time and oftentimes people will adjust their natural personalities to pander to what they think the audience wants to hear, and Mark will tell people what he thinks, and he doesn’t care if it’s not a popular opinion. It gives him an edginess that I think is really missing in the landscape today. Everybody’s so afraid to say anything, and Mark is unafraid to say exactly what he’s thinking.”

In a statement, Debra O’Connell, President News Group and Networks, Disney Entertainment shared, We could not be more thrilled with how Mark has seamlessly joined the show family as permanent co-host. His undeniable charisma and his and Kelly’s natural chemistry are evident as they deliver the laughs and smiles to our viewers each morning. We are incredibly proud of how Live has continued to evolve and that the audience is responding so enthusiastically.”

So, do you think Mark Consuelos is the best co-host his wife Kelly Ripa has ever had on ‘Live’? How would you say he is doing as co-host after one full year on the job? Comment below.

Jacob Young Shares Production Pic of Cast of His New Film Featuring Joan Collins and Nadia Bjorlin

Last month, during a livestream conversation on the Michael Fairman Channel, while promoting Jason Cook’s film, Four for Fun, and featuring soap notables Jacob Young (ex-AJ, AMC, ex-Lucky, GH, ex-Rick, B&B) and Brytni Sarpy (Y&R), Young revealed some intel on his upcoming movie project.

Jacob shared that he was set to direct, produce and star in a Agatha Christie-like murder mystery feature film, Murder Between Friends shooting in Prague.

The actor/director expressed, “I’m flying at the end of the March to Prague to direct, produce and star in a film with Joan Collins (ex-Dynasty). Nadia Bjorlin (ex-Chloe, Days of our Lives) is in it, and Toby Alexander Smith from Eastenders (ex-Gray Atkins). Plus, a couple of my Broadway friends and a very well known Czech actress (Hana Vagnerova). It’s very ‘Knives Out’ without having a hundred million dollars to shoot it, but still will be a lovely film nonetheless.”

Young is currently shooting the film’s principal photography abroad through April 17th.

Over the weekend, Jacob took to his Instagram to share a photo with the cast of the film where pictured is former Dynasty star, Joan Collins (ex-Alexis) and former Days of our Lives star, Nadia Bjorlin (ex-Chloe).
