VOTE: Daytime Emmy Snub Poll: Who Deserved a Pre-Nom, but didn't get in?

Courtesy/NATAS

Courtesy/NATAS

The 38th Annual Daytime Emmy Pre-Nominations were just announced and several key daytime performers who turned out quality work were conspicuously missing from the final Pre-Nomination ballot.

So now that many soap pundits and fans are in a justified uproar, we throw this question out to you for in our poll of the week, “Who deserved a Daytime Emmy Pre-Nom, but didn’t get in?”  Now remember this is based on those performers who were pre-selected on the first round ballot which was the pre-pre nominations! So only those performers were eligible in the first place to make it through to this round.

You can vote only for ONE candidate, so pick the one performer that you are most upset did not score a nomination.  You can only vote ONCE from One IP Address. Votes will be tabulated and announced next week at On-Air On-Soaps. Voting ends and the poll closes at Midnight Monday Night, February 28th, Pacific Standard Time.

OK, let’s go to the polls! Cast your vote after the jump and then leave a comment on who you picked and why.  We have also given you the OTHER option, if you feel someone else’s absence off the ballot upset you the most.

I mentioned earlier the HORROR that was the omission of Melody Thomas Scott, but I failed to recognize another complete MIND-BOGGLING omission: Stacy Haiduk on the Young and the Restless. Ms. Haiduk was absolutely RIVETING to watch as she seamlessly went from portraying the cool and collected Dr. Emily Peterson to the fury of a completely out-of-touch-with-reality Patty Williams. Melody and Stacy were definite VIP’s in my book and MVP’s in Genoa City in 2010. They have both won my personal award for best actress in a lead role!! Congratulations to you both on a fantastic job!! U are amazing!!

I think she hurt herself by submitting as Lead rather than Supporting. I think she would have definitely been Pre-Nommed in Supporting, and most likely made the final ballot, as well.

I am BEYOND pissed off that Dominic Zamprogna was not nominated. he is INCREDIBLE, SENSATIONAL and AUTHENTIC. what the hell is going on here?! The Emmy noms are a joke. DZ absolutely deserved to be nominated. this is heart breaking. I am crushed. But I see that the noms are all about politics and not TRUE talent…which is total BS. Dominic Zamprogna is KING!

But Congrats have to go out to JT for his nomination because he has been just as good this whole time as well

I feel Crystal Chappell’s return to DOOL breathed some life back into the show.Even though lately her storyline has stalled, she always made the most of what she was given. Also, I feel her presense has made other actors on the show bring their best, such as Molly Burnett and Nadia Bjorlin. I loved the chemistry between CC and Louise Sorel also.Thank you.

Lisa

Her story being BORING is all on the writers at DOOL, but that says nothing about her skills as an actress. No matter what crap the story is, she graciously makes the best of it and puts on a great performance. Definitely the biggest snub on the list.

Michele

CC is at the top of her game. She definitely brings out the best in those that are in scenes with her. Days failure is to give her a storyline that highlights her talent. What do you expect when all they write are about clones, kidnapping, organ stealing and people attacking under the influence of sleeping pills….very realistic?! I agree she make the best out of the crap she is given. Hoping the new storyline is realistic and of some quality!

I thought the category was ” Best Actress”. What was Kelly Monaco nominated for? Her outstanding impression of an woman trying to wave a plane in for a landing? The woman does nothing but flail her arms, flip her hair and look for her lines posted on the ceiling. Worst actress on daytime.

I have to agree. Though there may have been years with more substance to make a nod believable, I wouldn’t say 2010 stretched her chops at all. Maybe it’s because they the show has only 2 lead females that she got the nomination? Either way, I can’t say I’ve ever been impressed with KM’s performances except when she was a ‘bad’ girl. Rather liked her then and she kept her arms at her sides mostly.

I think Eric Braden and Melody Thomas Scott should have been in pre-noms; however, MM as Adam, no way. He has been the downfall of Sharon Case and Y & R. This hated character needs to leave GC. Many have stopped watching because of this character.

Stephanie
Guest
Stephanie

I am torn on MM. As a character I am no fan of Adam, because this Adam and Sharon pairing makes me sick. But MM as an actor is another story. As an actor he plays the villian well and was a key player in the year’s biggest storylines (such as they were).

But out of everyone I still go with Eric Braden and Melody Thomas Scott. Both of them have given flawless performances and deserved to be recognized.

Jasmine

To me MM as an actor is nothing special. The villain he portrayed is beyond redemption and, in my. Opinion, has caused the show great harm. I don’t think MM’s portrayal was any better than the original actorEXCEPT, when MM took over, the blindness seems to come and go. Nothing against the actor, I just think he has been forced on the viewers, so he has been on a lot BUT his performance was nothing special.

It is an absolute travesty that Dominic Zamprogna did not receive a pre-nomination for an Emmy. His performances all year were intense, emotional, riveting, dramatic; they were subtle, nuanced, quiet; they were funny; they were romantic; they were strong — in other words, he ACTED every day in every show — he gave 110% every time he was on screen. He has incredible chemstry with his love interest, but also with his other co-stars. I think the man could have chemistry with a tree he is so good. I must agree, for the Best Actress Female prenoms, hands down it should have been Laura Wright and Kimberly McCullough. Kim and Jason Thompson consistently gave stellar performances during the entire Fatal Attraction storyline. The clincher being when Patrick finally told Robin that he slept with Lisa. Those scenes alone should be what moves both actors to the final five of Best Actor and also on the reel for Best Writing. I don’t understand exactly how the Emmy process works but it sure seems messed up when an actress who never had a storyline that gave her a lead role… Read more »

Even today she had me crying for Robin. She had the material and worked it beyond what it could be. I felt for Robin. Deeply shocked about Kimberly McCullough’s snub by the academy. The Daytime Emmy’s are a joke to me now and truly showed they have no concept of talent. No offense to Julie Marie Berman, but what did she do to top KMC’s performance? Nothing, she just happens to be a favorite.

I am very disappointed Susan Lucci was not nominated this year. She has a very difficult role; many people think it is her because she is Erica Kane but those in the know will recognize Lucci is not Erica Kane. Very different people which goes to her credibility as an actress. The writers could help Lucci but she has done some amazing work this past year with her daughters on the show and even her dealing with her mother who she misses. She is a very under rated actress.

imasoapfan

I agree, I think Susan Lucci did some truly moving work this year: Palmer’s death, her reunion with her friend/enemy Brooke, saying goodbye to Adam, missing her mother Mona, the campy “Dorothy” scenes, and her struggles to keep her daughters safe and happy.

Sadly, the soap opera genre tends to skew itself to the younger market. I’m in my thirties and admit Lucci looks great for any age. But they seem to give her more of a supporting role to her daughters often when she still has the “it” qualities. Lucci in my opinion is at a disadvantage – to the world she is Erica Kane and Erica Kane is over the top, out of this world with a bit of camp. Still if you look at Lucci’s performance they remain true to the character – multi faceted as we see but she… Read more »

For me I thought the biggest error was not including FL instead of GT. Second would be Kim in place of JMB. In the end, I hope the award for supporting goes to MCE, so theres part of me thats glad Kim didnt get selected as she would have been MCE’s biggest competition. Now she just has to get past NLG.

I cannot believe that Kimberly McCullough was snubbed. The confession scenes between her and JT were phenomenal, and I think they both deserved to be up for it (Congrats to JT!). I think it’s pretty clear that JMB is up there again simply because she’s on all the time, rather than her actual acting ability. Don’t get me wrong, she’s good – but her scenes were not nearly as powerful as Kimberly’s this year.

KImberly is the biggest surprise. With everyone talking about her and the FA story and then she is snubbed is ridiculous.

There is no other actor on TV (daytime, night, etc) that puts that much emotion into every scene, he is so real. There is no “agenda” – because the soaps themselves no longer control the Pre-Nom voting process. Anybody can submit now, they don’t have to be submitted by the show. The in house voting only counts for a small part of the Pre-Nom process now. They started doing this last year to avoid on-set politics, cries of favoritism, and to refute the old “popularity contest” argument.

Pride Month Celebrating LGBTQ+ Soap Supercouples: Nuke, Kish, Otalia & WilSon … Which Stands the Test of Time?

June is Pride Month, the time when across the U.S and the world there are celebrations and commemorations to recognize all who identify as LGBTQ and their allies.

Daytime soap operas have had a rocky road when it comes to the representation of same-sex couples.  The soaps have been at one time leaders in portraying key social issues of our time, as well as treading lightly on other subjects, as to its concerns to ‘turn-off’ its core audiences.

When you look back at the groundbreaking first same-sex weddings, and the first gay kiss, the soaps have come far in some ways in their representations of gay characters, but there is always work to be done to serve and to shed light on the under-represented.

As we reflect back to the then and the now, which LGBTQ soap supercouple remains your favorite and had made a lasting impact? Let’s take a look at four duos who captivated many viewers.

Nuke  – Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer – As the World Turns

Van Hansis (Luke) and Jake Silbermann (Noah) were a key part of the evolution of, and representation of LGBTQ character on the soaps.  ‘Nuke’, as they were known as, became the first gay male soap couple to share an on-screen kiss back in 2007.  ATWT also became known as the first soap to depict a fully realized romantic male couple as an integral part of the show.  There was plenty of backlash along the way for the long-awaited kiss to happen, but when it did, the show moved forward to tell their love story.

Otalia – Olivia Spencer and Natalia Rivera Aitoro – Guiding Light

When Crystal Chappell (Olivia) and Jessica Leccia (Natalia) began to play the love story of Otalia, they had to show their affection by a kiss on the head, or holding hands.  It took quite some time for GL to move forward to have two women, two moms, no less, share a lip lock. The complicated love story featured Natalia being conflicted to face her true romantic feelings for Olivia, because of her value system and religions upbringing, and that made this all the more riveting and frustrating at the same time.  In the end, the rabid fan base for this duo was so great that Chappell wound up creating her own series, Venice, to honor and serve them, remaining one of the LGBTQ communities greatest allies.

Kish – Kyle Lewis and Oliver Fish – One Life to Live

In 2009, One Life to Live’s Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) was an out lab tech in Llanview, who back in college had a relationship with Officer Oliver Fish (Scott Evans).  It imploded when Oliver denied he was gay.  For years, Oliver remained in the closet, before finally coming out to himself and Kyle.

Kish had been a big success with the media and One Life’s gay audience. LGBTQ-advocacy groups honored the couple and the story.  However, Kish was cut short when the network felt that the data showed that the storyline was not resonating with the show’s core audience.

WilSon – Will Horton and Sonny Kiriakis – Days of our Lives

Days of our Lives delivered daytime’s first-ever gay male wedding in 2014, between Will (then played by Guy Wilson) and Sonny (then played by Freddie Smith).

In an interview with EW, Days of our Lives executive producer, Ken Corday shared on the union, “Will and Sonny have been together for a while and it was the natural progression of their love story. We didn’t feel like there was anything we could or couldn’t do, we treated them like any other couple on the canvas and continued to grow their romance as such.”

In addition, the coming out story of Will Horton was critically praised and noteworthy for the performances of Chandler Massey, who won three Daytime Emmys for his work in the Outstanding Younger Actor category 2012, 2013 and 2014.  Freddie Smith also won in the same category in 2015.  Will has been played over the years by Chandler Massey and Guy Wilson, while Sonny has been portrayed by Freddie Smith and Zach Tinker.

There have been several other key LGBTQ couples throughout the course of daytime history including All My Children’s Bianca (Eden Riegel) and Reese (Tamara Braun). These two characters were involved in the first same-sex lesbian wedding on daytime. Problem was … Reese kissed Zach (Thorsten Kaye) before the wedding, making this infuriating for viewers at home.

Other notable LGBTQ couples through the years have included: Bianca and Maggie on All My Children, Mariah and Tessa of The Young and the Restless played bv Camryn Grimes and Cait Fairbanks, Maya and Rick on The Bold and the Beautiful, Lucas and Brad on General Hospital and others.
