Who will win the GLAAD Media Award tonight… OLTL's Kish?

In what could be a monumental mess, One Life to Live is nominated tonight for a GLAAD Media Award which is being presented in ceremonies in New York.  One Life’s head writer, Ron Carlivati and Brett Claywell (Kyle) are slated to appear. The series is up against other same-sex storylines from GL, AMC, and ATWT in The Outstanding Drama Series category. It would appear that Kish, who has been the gay-media darling over the last several months would be the top contender.

Yesterday in TV Guide Canada’s Suds Report, Nelson Branco mentioned he had spoken to GLAAD President, Jarret Barrios who stated, “The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today advocated for continuation of the storyline of characters Kyle and Fish on One Life and spoke out on the importance of bringing fair and accurate media images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people to Americans. When news reports broke yesterday, GLAAD spoke to ABC Daytime to voice concerns over the cancellation and advocate that the storyline continue. We remain disappointed that ABC Daytime has chosen to stop sharing this powerful story with viewers of One Life. GLAAD will continue to advocate that in the near future, producers and writers at ABC Daytime incorporate gay and transgender characters in their programming.”  In the same piece, Branco shared his conspiracy theories as to why the rug was pulled out from underneath the audience and Kish. Very interesting.

So who do you think should take home the prize tonight for most accurately portraying gays on the soaps?  Comment here and let us know!

GL for me. 🙂

I’d still be going for Guiding Light..besides featuring Natalia and Olivia, they had one of their long time characters, Doris, come out as a closeted Lesbian..and were fun enough to pick up on the gay vibes between Cyrus and Remy and were good naturedly fooling around with those..
Maybe it’s not about who portrayed LGBT lifestyles the best..right now it seems to be more of a “How well did you manage to do in spite of your network policy?”
So each network should get allotted scores, which then should be added onto the gay positive storylines.Like racing horses are sometimes weighed down with leaden weights, when the jockeys are too frail…
Still love Otalia,though..and miss them a lot:-)

I hated GL’s gay storyline with Olivia. After all the men Olivia has had, I found the whole idea of making her a lesbian ridiculous. I loved the Kish stoyline. They are the most beautiful and sincere couple on a soap—–gay or otherwise.

ABC Officially Picks Up ‘Roseanne’ Spinoff, ‘The Conners’ With No Roseanne Barr Participation

Word on late Thursday afternoon is that ABC has now officially moved forward and gave a pick-up to the Roseanne spinoff series, The Conners.

As viewers know, there had been speculation that the series would revolve around Sara Gilbert’s character of Darlene, but now the other concept with the entire family in the title is the direction the new series will go (although it is said to be the “working title” of the series.)

The Conners received a ten episode order and will make the fall TV schedule, and will reside on Tuesday night’s on ABC at 8PM.

Roseanne Barr’s controversial tweets led to the network’s swift decision to cancel her series.

In the new deal, Barr will have no financial or creative involvement in The Conners after reaching a settlement with series producer, Tom Werner.

The Conners will feature the rest of the Roseanne core cast including: John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman.

According to Deadline:  It is unclear how exactly Barr’s character will be written off but ABC describes it as “a sudden turn of events.”  On the new show, after a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. This iconic family – Dan, Jackie, Darlene, Becky and D.J. – grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Through it all, the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns – with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails.

In a statement ABC commented: “The Conners’ stories demonstrate that families can always find common ground through conversation, laughter and love. The spinoff will continue to portray contemporary issues that are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago.”

A major turning point to greenlight the series came when the fact that the new series does not feature Barr’s character Roseanne Conner, which rights to which she is said to maintain, paved the way for an agreement with no Barr.

So, glad to hear The Conners will continue sans Roseanne? Comment below.
