Today in an article by Michael Maloney, Variety looks at the online rebirth of the beloved soaps All My Children and One Life to Live and raises the question, can soap operas be successful in the digital space?

One man who feels that they can is one half of Prospect Park visionaries, Rick Frank, who along with Jeff Kwatinetz, are leading the charge in putting AMC and OLTL back on the map!

Frank related, “While back, Jeff and I started to believe that the world was about to change in terms of how viewers receive their programs. Almost 20% of college graduates don’t buy television sets. Today, there’s the ability to feed anything to anybody’s screen — TV, iPad, or telephone — and give them programming that they want.”

When ABC canceled the two long-running soaps, Frank and Kwatinetz felt that the programs could serve as the foundation for their entire new venture,  The Online Network. (TOLN)  Frank explained, “At first, we had trouble explaining what we were trying to do, and we couldn’t make the deals. After a year of (people) being out of work, there was a lot more openness to it. The guilds worked with us.”

The article also goes on to talk about the buzz being generated that the new All My Children and One Life to Live will be more provocative than their network daytime counterparts.  Frank reveals, “We are going to be a little hotter and sexier. That doesn’t mean we’ll be doing anything that’s offensive. We’re trying to be contemporary and have storylines that are relevant to people’s lives.”

Sony Pictures Television Senior Executive VP, Steve Kent, who was also interviewed for the Variety piece, offered a difference of opinion on the matter, stating, “If they turn All My Children into porn — and I’m sure they won’t — then nobody is going to watch.  Soap audiences are more traditional.”   While Days of our Lives co-executive producer, Greg Meng, who was also part of the piece weighed-in stating, “We all have our fingers crossed that this is successful.  But these shows won’t be competitive with us.”

So soap fans, do you think the new All My Children and One Life to Live are poised to be the wave of the future? The new wave of storytelling as soaps try to become more contemporary?  Will they be the leaders with possibly the networks stealing concepts and stories that they utilize?  We shall see … stay tuned!   Now, let us know your thoughts!

They will blow the network soaps out if the water…abc., cbs, nbc had better up there game

I agree with Sony, if they turn it into Porn which they won’t people will tune out lots of fans are already not liking the idea of some nudity. I hope they both succeed, But I feel OLTL will end up doing better because they have most of it’s original cast and continuing where it left off, AMC has more new faces, yes some are recasts, but they have hired new people without even asking Some originals back, like Walt Willey Bobbie Eakes. Etc.

I agree totally.

I hate when they make big statements like “soap audiience is more traditional”! BS the soap audience is a hUgE amount of people! I have met all types that watch!

HELL YES! I will be the first to admit that I watch more shows on my iPad (on Hulu Plus) then I do on my TV. If I want to watch the online shows on my TV I still can via Hulu Plus on my smart TV. Evtually we won’t even need to have cable. The good thing about this for advertisers is that they still get their ads out there because on Hulu you still have to watch a few ads here and there. I don’t mind that but on TV it is rediculous because they have about 20 mins worth of ads in an hour show.

Depends I read an article in Tech Crunch about Hulu May require that people authenticate that they have cable or Satellite. Just google it. If they do that they will lose millions.

https://techcrunch.com/2012/04/30/rumor-hulu-will-soon-require-viewers-to-have-a-cable-subscription/
I saw another link so here it is If it is true it is the most stupid thing I have heard, what does a cable subscription have to do with watching a show on line

It wouldn’t affect these shows though…since they won’t ‘air’ on a television or cable channel first.

The article was written a year ago. If they haven’t by now, they won’t.

PP is on the cutting edge with moving these two iconic television shows to internet tv. In 5 years, internet tv and cable tv will be intertwined.

Lets just wish all soaps…network and online great success! There is plenty of room for all to succeed; isnt this what we all wanted? So, lets move on!

Did read on one of those soap links that pp might redo RH Todd scenes and will recast his Todd and M.E.s John? Starr i think is already recast with that blonde singer? Any truth to this?

jimh, I’m with you; let’s wish ALL the soaps, regardless of format, well. I don’t watch Y&R or B&B, and most of the time I skip DAYS, but I still know what’s going on with the shows. I read all the soap mags and internet buzz, so I have an idea who these actors are. And as I long-time soap viewer who has seen so many of his soaps bite the dust, I know the sting of watching the characters/stories vanish from my life. So regardless of whether or not I want to watch a particular show, I wish all the shows well; they mean so much to so many.

I’ve read/heard nothing about PP recasting any of the roles. The blonde you’re talking about has already said she is NOT Starr.

I believe it is a new day and yes they will be successful can’t wait to watch thank you thank you thank you pp

Can’t wait for OLTL and AMC to start. I think all soaps will be online in a few years.

Hey, it’s a new day 🙂
People either have to move into the media of the 21st century or stay behind lol ..

It is asinine and ridiculousness for some to even think the 2 soaps would go in a direction of tawdry bad taste, and should control themselves and not spread rumors that profane language and nudity and all those not true assumptions, it is not good promotion for the 2 soaps and could discourage some from watching simply because of uninformed people panicking over something that will not happen (nudity sex, vulgar language and assumptions of porn .. lol get real ..

I am looking forward to the new and unproved AMC and OLTL and congratulation to ALL for bringing both soaps into the exciting media of the 21st century story telling 🙂 🙂 WTG!!

lol not ”unproved” but to be improved .. whew that was a bad ohhohh ..

lol…Well, if there is NO sex, nudity, and vulgar language then wants the point of watching?

hey .. I’m for it -sex, nudity, and vulgar language, I’m a big girl and watch movies R rated lol..
but we won’t get it in the serial dramas, this year <– (lol
would be fun to watch the freaking out reactions of the Prudes lol ..

I think the one thing that ppl keep forgetting is that Agnes Nixon is a Part of Both the shows and she would not allow her shows to become something like that! Plus I think Jeff and Rich have way more respect for Ms Nixon than that….

There was an adult soap entitled “Eden” back in the ’90’s that didn’t live long – https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103406/ – let’s not go in that direction w/the Web reboots.

I think you mean ‘A New Day In Eden’ that ran on Showtime in the early 1980s? It did have a short run…

There was a show called Eden…ive never heared of that one…but A New Day In Eden was also controversal when it aired on cable for some of its storylines

I never saw “A New Day in Eden.”
Here’s the link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103406/ – I think this was a Playboy/Hefner project that ran on the Playboy Channel & then was sanitized & I saw it on the USA Network.

I kknow which Eden you mean now…ive never seen either one of them myself but i recall some talk about ‘East’.

I mean new

After reading this, my question is what is relevant in today’s changing world, and online programming to any device is undeniably relevant to today’s world, so yes, AMC and OLTL will be very successful simply because you can watch them anytime, anyplace, all the time, not too mention how good the storylines will be.

one life to live will be a big hit online. i wish both soaps great success on line. all my children need to bring back bobbie eakes as krystal and cameron mathison and greenlee to succeed. all my children might be gone fast if they dont bring back the origional core.

Ricardo is not that they don’t want to bring back these actors! Cameron I know can’t come back right now due to Obligations, You need to remember some of these actors and actresses went on to do other projects, I for one will keep watching AMC I am sure more of the core players will come back when they are done with their Obligations…..

Totally agree!

I can’t wait to see what they are going to do with our shows. I like thousands of others am very excited to have them return and to be able to take some risks they could not have done on boring ABC! However, they better not turn them into a porn show.

Time will tell, but I am not betting on it…

What’s up with this “Days of Our Lives” executive producer chiming in that “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” won’t be competing with his trashy soap? What a douche.

Guess he’s a little pissed that “Days” has perhaps only 1/10 of the Emmy awards the ABC soaps have.

The irony of the last 2 years is that the ABC decision has strengthened the genre, and is breaking new ground to insure it sustains itself if not on network TV. There is no reason to question whether viewers will watch online, we already do. The obligation now is on us, the viewer, to follow the reboots. I dont agree that viewers are more traditional, thats an outdated belief.

I think he was referring to content- not turning soaps into water down porn, or using offensive language just for the sake of using it. But in the end most soap viewers want to see good stories played out, whether on t.v. or the web. If the story is good, then a flash of boob now and then isn’t going to send me to the off switch, but if the story line is awful, then all the huffing and puffing or F words in the world will not keep my interest. If that makes me a traditionalist, so be it.

Why would I pay to watch soaps

you don’t have to pay to watch the soaps, they are FREE on-line, ”all” of them 🙂

I have watched YR – GH – OLTL – AMC on line free for years at HuLu and at the network sites..

how would I get HuLu?

Just go to Hulu dot com and register. That’s what I did, paid nothing.

I have alway’s watched my programs soaps & others on the t.v. Never went on line to watch any programs till now. This will be a first for me watching anything on line. Watching my favorite soap OLTL on line. My laptop screen isn’t nearly as big as my t.v.
screen. It will certaintly be all together different for me viewing the soaps on line. Can’t wait for OLTL (Erika Slezak)!

Depending on your television set…you can hook up your laptop to your TV and watch it on there! I use my TV as a monitor also, it’s great.

while not wanting to sound like a prude or out of touch, I tend to agree that if they push the envelope too far, they’ll lose viewers. Especially if they start with the crappy language. I’ve watch a couple of the other soaps that are now online, and that’s one thing that bothers me. While an occasional ‘f bomb’ is ok, some of these episodes have the actor(s) dropping it constantly. You don’t have to swear like a sailor to get your point across, and further more, it ends up making you look stupid. It will be a fine line….and it can be done right….keeping fingers crossed they have some class about the whole thing. We don’t need the shows to be ‘the same’, but they also can’t be unrecognizable.

I find nothing wrong with the F word, it is commonly used to express many emotions, from anger to happiness by all ages..
Using the F is not much to do about anything,, Bleeping it is weird we know it anyways.

America keeps bleeping because America needs some type of faked moral..
We watch people being raped, tortured, murdered, molested, and much more on netrwork tv but yet the F word is taboo , silly indeed..

even when the bleeping of the F word all know it and give it little attention ..

a F word here and there when called for to express ones self will keep things real 🙂
If it would be used, it would be rarely.. like when ya get shot lol

I agree….but if you read my whole comment, I was talking about a couple other online soaps….and they use the f bomb constantly. Sometimes 3 times in one sentence. I’m no prude. I’m a construction worker…dump truck driver….27 years. I’m just sayin’ you don’t have to say f’n this and f’n that to make it real. I work around people that sound like that and they’re boring. I’m hoping both shows rock.

I would respectfully disagree that there is nothing wrong with the F word. All words have power, and the F word more than any other swear word is not only an ugly word but a violent word. Yes, it is realistic, as you said, but it doesn’t mean I want to listen to it, anymore than I would want to watch a show that had graphic physical violence in it. And the F word is verbal violence.

If you don’t believe me look in a mirror and say the F word over and over and then see how that makes you feel. Then in front of the same mirror say the word Love over and over and see the difference in mood in creates. Words have an power.
As a lover of language to me using the F word just to use it, is sloppy and the mark of an inferior writer- because there are plenty of words to express emotions without it- I don’t think William Shakespeare ever use it and no one could say he was a prune.

So no we don’t have to be like the old days and swoon over the word being used, but I for one- like the bleeping- yes, I know what the word is but at least I don’t have to let the negative vibe the goes with it invaded my spirit, for the sake of “entertainment”

This will be like Cable, than Porn, Like Nip/Tuck with brief nudity and language. I think more people will watch.

that’s what I’m hoping for!

Hey Janice,
Just remember Ms Agnes Nixon is in this….Just knowing that makes me feel confident that it will not porn or fowl language all the time! Now would I love to see Viki to tell Dorian the shut the F up just once? Yes I would as that would be hysterical!

I agree totally!

No worries. Erika Slezak herself said that Viki will not suddenly start spouting F-Bombs. And like Joliefan said -having Agnes Nixon on board ensures these shows will still be classy. Having an edge and pushing the envelope doesn’t have to mean trashy. 😉 (Hearing Viki say that just once would be hysterical! Imagine how many times we would’ve heard ‘you bitch’ all these years…and ‘oh shit!’ lol)

I read that article….I agree on all points. It’s gonna be so good to see them back 🙂

I’m keeping my fingers crossed they are both successful but I’m not sure they have the right scribes for these shows. AMC should’ve done what it took to get Lorraine Broderick on their writing team and OLTL without Ron Carlivati seems like a glass half full to me. Being provocative is all well and good, but it all starts with good character driven story; hopefully the writers remember that.

right on!

Sorry But RC is a crap writer! The 2 Todd Story line…STUPID……Taking a year to find out that Marty changed Nat’s results…..BORING……The Ford Brothers……STUPID…….Nate being in a Porno……STUPID…….The Bullying story line Poorly written……Rex’s paternity…….WAY TO LONG……The B.O.B ((Bag of Blood)) story line…..STUPID!
GH will be sorry for hiring him, His true crap writing has not been fully seen yet ((Except the Stupid Vampire Story line)) on GH but it will!

Your whole reply is stupid…you found so much wrong with OLTL why did you even watch…Ron must be a great writer otherwise many of us wouldnt be watching his work and PP must have thought so too or they wouldnt have signed Ron and Frank when they originally planned to do the reboot. If you think you can do a better job, id like to see you try it.

No writer has a perfect track record, but with the exception of the Ford brothers all of those storylines were solid and played off the history of the characters. The bullying storyline was extremely well written (check out Y&R’s attempt if you want to see how NOT to tell the same story) and the 2 Todds was pure soap fun. As for taking too long with a story — have you never watched a soap? Half the fun is in seeing the various elements and complications play out before the big reveal.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Ron Carlivati is the only head-writer currently working that plays the vets in a smart way, builds off of a show’s established history, and works to weave all the characters in and out of each other’s storylines.

I watched because I have been a LOYAL fan for over 25 years Kim…Ron and Frank were signed on to GH way before PP even announced that they were taking the shows on…..Actually I can DO a better Job, I already wrote the way out of that STUPID 2 Todd Storyline and posted it on this page! All you need is common sense and an imagination, which RC COMPLETELY LACKS! Just wait you will see it and GH will pay for it!

Alan no one watches soaps to see a Story line go on for a YEAR, Let alone 2 to 3 years to find out who someone’s parents are, That is ridiculous! The 2 Todd S/l was not pure soap fun it was STUPID and throw together with very little imagination! And I’ll say it again OLTL fans have seen his crappy writing and you GH fans will too and it will not be long b4 all you GH fans are on here screaming to high hell about the Stupid S/L’s and him dragging things out and never keeping a couple together longer than a couple of months to a couple of weeks, Hooking up completely wrong characters, Shoving Couples down your throats that you don’t want to see, Shoving his Pet Projects in the fans faces in S/L’s that dominate the show! You’s have been warned, his “Talent” will not last!

It was announced when PP originally intended to do the reboots, Ron and Frank were signed with them first! Ron is doing a fine job and millions think so otherwise they wouldnt be tuning in to gh, and many stayed after GH wrote out Todd, Starr and John, and many will continue after the 50th and nurses ball. I dislike abc for what the did and im ecstatic that PP is bringing back amc and oltl but im still worried what happens if the writers fail to deliver and we loose these shows again? It could happen to them too, not to just GH. Even if you are right or wrong about GHs future, you seem to wish GH fails just to prove a point! No matter how any of us feels about abc or prospect park we should stand together and support all network and online soaps instead of it making sound like a friggen childish game of which one will succeed and which one will fail. And if gh does get cancelled, im going to enjoy every minute of it while i can and i wouldnt be enjoying it if it werent for Ron. One more thing: Maybe if amc and oltl do continue but pp decides to hire new writers would you still support oltl and pp if they rehire Ron to do it after you have critized him so much or would you want to see OLTL fail under him just to prove your point!

JOLIEfan i did like how you did write your version of the Todd/Victor/Walker storyline, and actually hope it turns out that way but who knows that could have been Rons solution too had he continued with PPs reboot. The new writers probably have different ideas. But for now lets call a truce, and be happy for both OLTL, which i intend to watch too( i love TSJ as well) but lets also wish GH continued success as well.

You can Type http://www.hulu.com in the Box that is on the Page that you are on when you get on the Internet. The Box is The Search Engine and the Page is Your Start Page OR maybe Your Home Page. Be sure that when you get to The Hulu Page to put that on Your Favorites List or Bookmark that Page. Then, You can Click on that from Your Favorites List or Bookmark. Jody

I definitely want to tune into AMC. I will keep the faith but just because they can use stronger language or nudity isn’t appealing to me but DAMN good story is what’s most important. I dread phrases like “cutting edge”, “edgy”, “hotter” “sexier”, “youthful” every soap has used the same old term and then you have 50+ person dressing the youth in a bad flashback of ’80s fashion…..I want good multi-generational stories empassing all the cast in good storytelling, not a bunch of newbies that can’t act in dreadful stories looking like a bunch of hookers on the main street of Pine Valley & Llanview…which the younger cast of OLTL already looks like a bunch of whores parading around in costumes not clothes what ppl wear. Give me a break.

I definately agree with you…

Joliefan Forever said it. I’ve met the man and I love him and when he is “on”, he is “ON”!! …but, …Joliefan Forever said it..! The truth is often unpleasant and we owe the man EVERYTHING, but… Joliefan Forever said it..! *sigh*

I believe these shows will be successful online. I will watch and will help others watch and will try and get new viewers! Soaps still matter!

Its been said PP plans to take the shows into a sexier and edgier enviroment but PP co founder said fans shouldnt expect anything too racy on these reboots. They will be a little hotter and sexier but not in an offensive way. They are trying to be contemporary and have stories that are revelent to the people watching. So there shouldnt be any complaints until we see it and then we each can decide if we will continue to watch or not.

Saul Consuelos, the father of All My Children alum and Live with Kelly and Mark co-host, Mark Consuelos (ex0-Mateo, AMC), has died. During an emotional moment on this mornings, April 6 edition of the syndicated talk show, Mark shared, that his dad, “passed away peacefully” back on March 23 following a long illness.

His wife and co-host, Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley, AMC) paid tribute to her her father-in-law expressing, he was, “the greatest person I’ve ever known. I can honestly say I will miss him every day for the rest of my life, as I know you will, as our children will. He really is so symbolic of everything you are.”

Kelly and Mark’s children, Joaquin, Michael and Lola Consuelos are said to be taking this extremely hard. Ripa added, “This is the first loss they’ve ever experienced in their lives. And I said, ‘By the time I was 8, I had no grandparents. You got to grow up (with grandparents). You got to have deep, meaningful conversations (with them).”

In another moment, Mark reflected on his dad. “It’s funny, I used to make a joke about my dad … if you asked him what time it was, he would tell you how to build a watch. There were a lot of lectures, a lot of lectures and I learned so much. If he was fixing something in the house, he’d make me watch and do it. And I didn’t know at the time why he was doing that. But now at the house, I’m able to do at least half of the stuff that he did. I learned the most by just watching him.”

Mark added that Saul Consuelos came to the U.S. from Mexico in his early teens and served our county for decades, detailing, he “Ended up at Special Operations Command in Tampa. This young kid from Mexico just got his education from the navy. Was always going to school. Was brilliant. Got his Masters while I was a kid.  He loved his country so much, If you’re going to put a face to an immigrant, he would be the prime example of what this country promises people.”

In a very heart-tugging moment, Consuelos shared that now its important they be there for his mother, Camilla. “We gotta take care of mom. We’re trying to convince my mom to move to New York. She’s such a character, she’s stubborn. What do you think, a cooking segment here on Fridays with Camilla?”

Now below, watch the very touching and emotional moments as Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa mourn the loss of Saul Consuelos.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Visits ‘The View’ Where Hosts Sidestep Controversial ‘Buffy’ Reboot Axing, But Talk ‘All My Children’

Published

on

By

On yesterday’s March 17 episode of The View, All My Children alum, Sarah Michelle Gellar (ex-Kendall Hart), was the special guest. Since Monday, Gellar has been the subject of a hot-button issue since about the surprising turn of events that the highly-anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, in which she stars, and which was directed in the pilot by Oscar-winning director, Chloé Zhao, was no longer moving forward.

Gellar‘s appearance on the ABC morning talk show was devoid of any mention of Hulu cancelling its planned Buffy: New Sunnydale, in which Sarah was set to appear along with Ryan Kiera Armstrong. However, Gellar did discuss her new movie Ready or Not 2: Here I Come from Searchlight Pictures.

It should be noted that both Hulu and Searchlight Pictures are owned by The Walt Disney Company, while The View is produced by ABC News, which is also owned by The Walt Disney Company.

During the awkward interview, when it became clear the ‘Buffy’ reboot topic was off the table, The View co-host Sunny Hostin, talked about the “intense fight scenes” that have become a staple of her TV and film career starting with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scream 2, and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The ladies of The View also brought up Sarah’s beginnings on All My Children as Kendall Hart (1993-1995), showing a scene with her and her on-screen mother, the iconic Erica Kane, played by Susan Lucci. The discussion sprung out of another All My Children alum, Michael B. Jordan (ex-Reggie Montgomery) winning the Oscar this past Sunday for Best Actor for his role in Sinners. The View’s Joy Behar was quick to point out with Gellar, the All My Children alums that have gone on to great fame.

Photo: ABC

Previously on Monday, Gellar opened up to PEOPLE about being blindsided before while at the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere for Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. “I got the call as we were stepping onto stage for the premiere of their own movie. And it’s also the weekend of Chloé going to the Oscars as a best director nominee for Hamnet. For them to call us on the Friday of what should have been Chloé’s victory lap for an incredible film, and my world premiere of something that I worked very hard for is… that says something.”

She went to say, “We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him.” Deadline reports that “multiple sources” identified the executive as Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich.

“I loved the duality that we had with this new, younger slayer who was where Buffy was when the show started, and then we would pick up with where Buffy was now,” Gellar told People about the setup.  However, according also to Deadline “After the pilot was completed and delivered, according to multiple sources, Hulu’s main note was that it played too young, with some indicating that the streamer also felt the show was too “small.”’

In the rewrite, sources also told the outlet that the writers did not take big enough swings, so they set out to do a rewrite it again. The last revision was more adult, featuring a lot more of Gellar’s Buffy, and was described as a more of a streaming show than a network one. When all is said and done there is hope that another Buffy IP will be up and running within the next couple of years.

You can check out Sarah Michelle Gellar’s full segment on The View below. Now let us know, bummed there is no Buffy reboot? What do you think about how this high profile Hollywood saga was side-stepped on the morning show? Did you love Sarah as the original Kendall Hart on All My Children?
