WWE Money in the Bank 2023: Roman Reigns is Pinned for First Time in 3 1/2 Years; Damian Priest & Iyo Sky MITB Winners
In a red-hot premium live event on Peacock, WWE’s 2023 edition of Money in the Bank from London, England was a wild ride with a series of show-stopping moments and storylines that will keep interest in pro wrestling at an all-time high.
Let’s break this down by saying, Shemar Moore’s (ex-Malcolm, Y&R) line announcing to Susan Lucci (ex-Erica, AMC) that she finally won the Daytime Emmy for Lead Actress, ‘the streak is over’, can apply to a huge moment at MITB. WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns was actually pinned and lost a match for the first-time in over three and a half years! That streak for the dastardly Reigns is now over.
THE USOS vs. ROMAN REIGNS AND SOLO SIKOA
While Reigns was not defending his championship, he was given the three count, when his cousin Jey Uso secured the win in the Bloodline Civil War tag-team match main event.
“Main Event” Jey Uso came of the top rope with a frog splash and pinned his cousin for the first time since December of 2019. This was an absolute epic match with stellar storytelling, all of it would not go over as much as it does without the performances of Reigns, who plays every beat of the story through his looks and motivations and words in and out of the ring, as much as the wrestling action. The loud and boisterous crowd from London’s O2 Arena, chanted “Stand up if you hate Roman Reigns” throughout the match, and like clockwork, the whole place was standing up amplifying the heel heat on Reigns.
In addition, the match left you with questions. Where does the Usos younger brother, Solo Sikoa’s allegiance really lie? Throughout the match, Sikoa’s face, at times, appeared very conflicted as he continued to let Reigns decimate his older brothers. Those that were waiting for a complete turn by Sikoa, hoping he would join forces with his brothers, will have to wait another day. But from the looks of it, that day is coming.
Now, with his entire ‘Bloodline’ on the brink of collapse, his cousin Jey Uso a threat once again to his Universal Championship, and the WWE creatives allowing Reigns to be pinned, it looks to set up a title match between Jey and Roman this August at SummerSlam. Will WWE book that match? Stay tuned. The ‘Bloodline’s’ story has continually paid huge dividends for the WWE with record-high attendance and high television ratings, and there’s more to the story to come.
MEN’S MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH
In a brilliant move to start the show with the highly competitive men’s Money in the Bank ladder match the field included: Butch, Ricochet, Shisuke Nakamura, Logan Paul, Damian Priest and L.A. Knight.

Photo: WWE
Social media superstar and influencer, Logan Paul, who has proven he belongs in the WWE, was not the favorite with the crowd and he played up that fact. However, the one that everyone in London was rooting for, and many at home, was L.A. Knight. This is the guy who has it all, but has never been given the proper push by the WWE. It seemed like this would be his moment to elevate him to where he should be. However, it was not meant to be Knight’s night.
In the post event press conference, Triple H said on L.A. Knight’s loss at Money in the Bank, “I know LA Knight was a massive favorite coming in tonight, continuing that ascent. But great things come to those who wait, right? I think that that rise is just getting started.”
Another very deserving star, Damian Priest, ultimately climbed to the top of the ladder and secured the briefcase which means he now has a shot to win a WWE championship at any time. The moment Priest secured the briefcase, and with his Judgment Day teammate Finn Balor facing Seth Rollins for the WWE Championship later in the night, all eyes were going to be on Priest, if he showed up at ringside to cash in. (More on that below).
There were outstanding bumps and spots throughout the ladder match. One moment occurred when Ricochet summersaulted from the ring slamming Paul off the apron into two tables. The replay seemedto indicate Paul hurt his head, but he actually wound up slicing his shoulder.
WOMEN’S MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH
As the WWE Universe would say, “This was awesome!” The women’s Money in the Bank ladder match was so creative and featured high-flying spots and double-crosses, that you really did not know which way it was going to go – although the smart money was on Iyo Sky. Competing for the briefcase were: Becky Lynch, Trish Stratus, Bayley, Sky, Zoey Stark and Zelina Vega.

Photo: WWE
During the match, Stark, working alongside “Thank You” Trish Stratus, tried to handcuff Becky Lynch to the ring post, but she only got the cuffs around on one of her wrists. As the decorated Lynch (who has never won Money in the Bank) tries to climb her ladder to victory, Bayley was on the opposite side of her with a ladder trying to beat her to the top. Then, came Iyo Sky’s brilliant thinking! She handcuffed her Damage CTRL mentor, Bayley, and Lynch to each other so they could not use their arms to further climb their ladders, enabling Sky to get to the top and grab the briefcase and become the winner.
The match definitely took its toll on WWE legend, Trish Stratus, 47, as it appears she broke her nose. Vega and Sky provided the jaw-dropping spots throughout the match including powerbombs off the top of the ladder and Sky, taking to the sky, to land on all her opponents outside the ring.
After Sky’s recent performances, including at WWE Backlash in Puerto Rico against Bianca Belair, it was only a matter of time before she got her big push. Now the question becomes, which WWE women’s champ will she cash in on?
LIV MORGAN AND RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ VS. RHONDA ROUSEY AND SHAYNA BASZLER
In the “WTF” moment of the entire show, Shayna Baszler out of nowhere turned on her tag team partner Rhonda Rousey during their WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship match against Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez. If you went away from your screens or blinked, you may have missed this turn of events. After going ballistic on her partner, Baszler walked out on the match, leaving a vulnerable Rousey to easily get pinned by Rodriguez.

Morgan and Rodriguez regain the tag championships they lost. Where does this go from here? Most likely, Rousey vs. Baslzer at SummerSlam, but we just are on sure of what are the motivations for Shayna to beat down Rhonda.
JOHN CENA MAKES A SURPRISE APPEARANCE
In a shocker, and a major moment of the night, 16-time WWE champion, John Cena came out to the ring to the adoring crowd and propped up London as a potential home for WrestleMania, much to the delight of the over 19,000 in attendance.
Cena shared, “I want the world to know that you are under-appreciated. I’m here to try to bring WrestleMania to London.” While the pop was deafening, this has to be something in the works for the superstar to say that. The first open WrestleMania would be 2025, since WrestleMania is booked for Philadelphia in 2024. With AEW about to sellout Wembley Stadium this August with their first massive stadium show, it’s clear that WWE went on the offense to bring an even bigger moment to London town.

Photo: WWE
To give Cena a foe during his segment, Grayson Waller came out to talk trash to Cena and to say that WrestleMania should come to Australia not London. Eventually, Waller attacked Cena, but Cena got the upper hand with his ‘attitude adjustment’ before his time in the ring ended.
Just having Cena show up was massive for fans young and old at O2 Arena. Reports indicated that John was already in London filming a movie so it was easy to get him to come across time and give some love to the London WWE Universe.
SETH ‘FREAKIN’ ROLLINS VS. FINN BALOR
In this WWE World Championship match, Balor had an ax to grind against Rollins. Ultimately, this match was really about furthering another storyline rather than this match itself.
Damian Priest, fresh off winning the Money in the Bank ladder match, came out to the ring ten minutes into the match-up. As many had hoped, would this be the moment that Priest would cash in on Rollins if he was weakened by Balor, or would he swerve his Judgement Day buddy, Finn Balor, if Balor got the victory? What did happen was Priest brought the intimation factor to ringside with his MITB briefcase in hand.

Photo: WWE
Ultimately, Damian did not cash in. Instead, he faked like he would as Balor went to the top rope for his finisher the coup de grace, but he was distracted by Priest and fumbled the move. Rollins was then able to knock Balor off the top rope and hit him with his patented curb stomp and secure the win.
There will be more dissension between Priest and Balor in the weeks to come. Will Priest leave the Judgement Day? Will one or the other cost each other a title opportunity? More to come.
In other key moments ….
GUNTHER VS. MATT RIDDLE
While it looked once again that Gunther was dominant in his win vs. Matt Riddle to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship, the real threat to his title arrived on the scene when Drew McIntrye returned to action after months away and his contract negotiations still underway. In the ring, McIntrye challenged Gunther and landed a Claymore to Gunther’s face for good measure. It was at WrestleMania 39 that Gunther, McIntrye and Sheamus were involved in that triple-threat match for the title, that many believed was one of the best of WrestleMania weekend in Los Angeles.
CODY RHODES VS. DOMINIK MYSTERIO
Rhodes secured an easy win here over Mysterio, and now he is on to continue to ‘finish the story’. We would assume, next up, the third match-up with Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam, before returning to his quest for the WWE Universal Championship currently held by Roman Reigns.
This card had everything and we have to give it a solid “A”. Following Money in the Bank, Michael Fairman and pro wrestling reporter, Luis Ruiz went on to You Tube’s Michael Fairman Channel for another edition of their What’s Up? Wrestling series to give their thoughts and reactions immediately following the premium live event on Peacock. You can catch that below.

WWE SATURDAY NIGHT’S MAIN EVENT: Cody Rhodes and CM Punk Victorious with Help from Nick Aldis, Roman Reigns and Jalen Brunson Rule the Big Apple

WWE returned to its home, the Big Apple, New York City for the July 18 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event streaming on Peacock headlined by a blockbuster tag team match featuring CM Punk and Cody Rhodes against Gunther and Sami Zayn.
The bout had an added stipulation: if Punk and Rhodes can co-exist and win the match, they will continue as planned to face each other at SummerSlam, where Rhodes has the chance to win the WWE Undisputed Championship from Punk. However, if they lose, Gunther and Zayn would make it a fatal four-way.
Being held at Madison Square Garden, the night was to be heralded return of Danhausen to New York City since he uncursed the New York Knicks and became a cultural phenom during the NBA team’s title run; where they captured the championship for the first time in 53 years.
Also, the show was going to close with WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns alongside Knicks playoffs MVP Jalen Brunson for a special acknowledgment ceremony. Let’s take a look at what happened when the smoke cleared at one of the better SNME’s delivered by the WWE over the past year.

Undisputed WWE champion CM Punk and Cody Rhodes vs. Sami Zayn and Gunther
This star-studded match-up literally had a fantastic fast and frenetic pace which was great to see from all four men. Throughout the match, chants of “this is awesome” came from the audience in attendance, especially when after much high flying (especially from Cody Rhodes), the four laid spent flat out on the mat for what was a breather before the match’s final moments, leaving the drama to anyone’s guess at the finish and who would be the title picture at SummerSlam.
After referee Charles Robinson took a bump and was taken out, Gunther grabbed Punk’s title belt and clocked Rhodes in the head with it. As he was pinning Rhodes, he called for a new referee. As one came out from the back to deliver the three count, suddenly, he was pulled out by Nick Aldis (SmackDown GM, who has been feuding with Gunther) and yanked by his leg to the floor. Next, Aldis hit Gunther with the title belt, allowing Punk to deliver a Go to Sleep while Rhodes pinned the Ring General to secure the pin..
However, things got intense between Punk and Rhodes while after celebrating their victory in the ring, upon Punk making his entrance, he “accidentally” hit Cody in the face with his belt. Later, Rhodes came at Punk in a backstage segment that went viral. Leading the WWE Universe to ponder; Is Punk turning heel? Is Cody? Stay tuned as now the heat starts to build for their championship match-up in two weeks at SummerSlam in Minneapolis.

No Disqualification Match: Danhausen vs. JD McDonagh
Minihausens and New York Knicks center/forward Karl-Anthony Towns gave an assist to the very nice, very evil Danhausen so he could defeat Judgement Day’s JD McDonagh with interference from Dominik Mysterio.
During most of the match, McDonagh was manhandling Danhausen, but when the NYC favorite was able to get up the ring ramp to his “Cloning Machine” and putting his cat in it … out came Towns! When the Knicks favorite made his way to the ring, it got a huge pop from the crowd, which led to Town chokeslamming Mysterio through a table, while Danhausen delivered his Triple D (Danhausen Death Drop) to JD for the win.

Bayley vs, Lyra Valkryia
Lyra Valkyria has gone off the rails and this match against Bayley, her former idol, tag-team partner and friend, illustrated fully her new heel character who has seemingly lost her marbles.
Early in the match though, Bayley’s elbow struck Lyra in the nose and she may have broken it and was bleeding during the entire match due to the mishap.
This unhinged version of Valkyria defeated Bayley, and then continued to give her a beat down after the match throwing Bayley into the ring post and then the steel steps before security and officials finally got her to back off.

Women’s Tag Team Championship Match: Paige and Brie Bella vs. Fatal Influence
This was the least interesting match of the night, but due to interference from Jacy Jayne, Fatal Influence’s Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid are the new Women’s Tag Champs.
As to what happens now with Paige and Bella remains to be seen. Do they split and have a feud since Paige’s comeback was initially as a fill-in for Brie’s sister, Nikki Bella, in a tag team championship match, who was out with an injury? More soon.

Jalen Brunson and Roman Reigns Face off with Seth Rollins and Tyrese Haliburton
In the closing segment of the show, the OTC Roman Reigns and NBA MVP Jalen Brunson took to the ring at Madison Square Garden together with ones to the sky for the Tribal Chief. Once Reigns took the mic, it was all about celebrating and acknowledging Brunson for giving the Knicks their first championship in over five decades.
The moment was topped off by Reigns giving a gift from the WWE to Brunson – his own custom world heavyweight title made of blue leather and custom nameplates with the Knicks colors blue and orange around it.
However, the celebration was interrupted when Seth Rollins music hit and out came Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton who is hated in the Big Apple by Knicks fans. The entrance of Haliburton served as a distraction as Rollins entered the ring and attacked Reigns from behind. However, before Seth could deliver his patented stomp and this time on to a steel chair, Brunson stepped in front of him, protecting the OTC.
That move allowed Reigns to recover and flatten Rollins with his Superman Punch, which led the Visionary hightailing it up the ramp with Haliburton. At the end, Reigns stood tall in the ring with Brunson in tow and got the photo op of the season holding the NBA’s Larry O’Brien Trophy high over his head as the two champs from different worlds had the fans cheering as the show came to its conclusion.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jack Plants a Kiss on Nina; Are You Down With Them as a Couple?

The Friday, July 17 episode of General Hospital brought with it a cliffhanger that many viewers were forecasting was on its way to happening. Yup, Brennan (Chris McKenna) and Nina (Cynthia Watros) have a thing for each other and their relationship took a turn when Jack kissed Nina while at the Brown Dog bar while they were having drinks and she certainly did not pull away.
How did we get here? After being unable to find his black box at Wyndemere, Jack raised concerns that his WSB higher-ups would consider transferring him out of Port Charles because Cullum’ machinations happened in the town where he was the bureau chief.
Then, Jack asks Nina what motivates her to go to such extremes to help her daughter Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) with her nefarious crimes. Nina begins to explain to Jack that her children were taken from her and she was unable to protect Nelle or Willow and that Willow has suffered unspeakable trauma in her life that she had never totally dealt with. As a mother, she will do anything to protect her daughter and to stay in her life.

JACK MAKES HIS MOVE
After downing more drinks, Jack apologized for having blackmailed Nina to get intel from Charlotte (Bluesy Burke) in exchange for the traffic cam footage of Willow. He wished instead of that maneuver he would have asked the editor in chief of Crimson out on a date. He feel like then he would have gotten to know Nina before she had to save his life.
When Nina shared that is sounds like Jack is holding it against her, his comeback response is that he doesn’t do gratitude well. So in an effort to show Nina how gratefully he truly is to her, Jack gets up from his barstool and plants a major kiss on her! We fade to black.
You can check out the scenes between Jack and Nina from today’s GH below in the video entitled, “Before You Saved My Life” below.
Now weigh-in: are you all for Jack and Nina as a couple? Do you find it interesting that for the most part, Nina ends up with men that used to be involved with her nemesis Carly (Laura Wright)? Share your thoughts on this new romantic pairing via the comment section.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Tells Danny: ‘The Place They Were Holding Me Was Bad, Really Bad’

What happened to Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) when he was captivity by the WSB? That is the question on many minds of General Hospital viewers, especially following the airing of the Tuesday, July 14 episode of the ABC daytime drama series, which also received a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series for the 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards yesterday.
In story and in the pick-up of Monday’s episode, Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) comes face to face with his father at the Quartermaine boathouse. Jason assures his son that he is home for good. However, Jason is confused why the WSB suddenly released him from Jakarta in the last 48 hours.
Danny goes in on his father for taking the fall for Cullum’s shooting when it was Rocco who shot the now deceased WSB director. Jason tried to explain he had to make a last minute decision and didn’t want Rocco’s life to be ruined by shooting another man.

Courtesy/ABC
JASON WANTS TO TAKE A SHORT TRIP WITH DANNY
Jason promised Danny that from now on, he is his top priority, and that time away has given him a new perspective. When Danny tries to get more intel from his dad on what he went through, all Jason would say is, “The place they were holding me was bad, really bad.”
Danny admits that the person he told that Rocco shot Cullum was Port Charles bureau chief, Jack Brennan, but he told him that WSB would want Danny to drop the whole thing, and just leave it be now that Cullum is dead.
TRACY SEES JASON
Suddenly, Tracy (Jane Elliot) shows up and is happy to see that Jason has resurfaced saying she knew he would be back. As she welcomed him home, Jason has a favor to ask her.
Next, he proposes much to Danny’s happiness, that he and his son are going to away together for a few days to catch up on things. So, that there is no issue, Jason asks if Tracy can please tell Alexis that he has returned to Port Charles and anyone else that would need to know, so they are not concerned for Danny’s welfare and that they know he is with his dad. Tracy agrees, and she and Jason share a hug.
Now the question is, what happened to Jason? We know his face is beaten up. We saw in flashbacks he was held in a cell and we can see he had been experiencing what seems like PTSD from being in captivity.
Previously, GH co-head writer, Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten previewed to Soap Opera Digest on Jason’s return, “His imprisonment has had a profound effect on his outlook and how he intends to conduct the rest of his life. His decision will have big implications for Danny, Britt, the Quartermaines, Anna and especially Sonny.”
So, what do you think happened to Jason while being held by the WSB? Did something horrific occur? Will Jason tell Sonny he can no longer work for him so he no longer puts himself or his family in any kind of danger? Share your thoughts via the comment section below.
