Y&R will begin a compelling and vitally important storyline regarding breast cancer awareness beginning this Thursday January 9th, with an extended episode arc that will feature Sharon Case’s character of Sharon Newman.

A public service announcement (PSA) focusing on early detection from CBS Cares and the American Cancer Society with Case will be featured prominently at the end of the Jan. 9 episode. The PSA will also be available online at www.CBSCares.com.

In story, Sharon shares with her boyfriend, Rey Rosales (Jordi Vilasuso), that she has breast cancer. He accompanies her to meet with an oncologist to begin the process of learning more about her diagnosis and treatment.  In the coming weeks, Sharon relies on the support of her family and friends to stay positive.

“The Young and the Restless has always tackled important social issues within the show’s rich storytelling,” said co-executive producer and head writer Josh Griffith.  “From AIDS and alcoholism to drunk driving and domestic abuse, we’ve consistently tried to focus on the human condition in an open and honest manner.  We’re proud to be joining with the American Cancer Society to deliver this important message about breast cancer awareness.”

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of 1.5 million volunteers dedicated to saving lives, celebrating lives, and leading the fight for a world without cancer. From breakthrough research to free lodging near treatment, a 24/7/365 live helpline, free rides to treatment, and convening powerful activists to create awareness and impact, the Society is attacking cancer from every angle. So, what do you think about Sharon’s cancer diagnosis and that Y&R will be addressing breast cancer awareness with this story featuring Sharon Case? Comment below.

That bozo, Rey, is still on here? Good grief.

Laughed out loud at your comment. Thanks

I support this story and am glad we’re not going to have another string of secrets Sharon keeps from everyone. The focus should be on the illness and how people can find strength and purpose in dealing with it. Yes, we’ve had cancer stories before, but there are new cases developing every day and some reminders are not a bad thing. On the artistic side, maybe Emmy-neglected Sharon Case can get a story worthy of recognition in the Lead Actress category. After all this Theo/Mia/Tessa nonsense, I’m looking forward to this tale and hope it’s told well.

I’m glad there doing it. I went through the same thing many years ago an my family supported me. It’s a scary thing to go through. In the end my biopsy turned out to be not cancer, I was so relieved.

I think it wonderful that these extremely important issues are brought into soap storylines. It gives women a medium to learn about them and shows them ways to bring family and loved ones into the care and solutions. I hope Josh et al can do justice with this very important storyline. Finally some meat for Sharon to show her talents other than wiping tables. I hope the story of Dina and her Alzheimer’s will continue as well. It may not be a pretty s/l but it hits home for many who have loved ones with this disease.

Sharon Case & Jordi Villasuso are going to slay this. Not only is it an important story but it will hopefully push all the Adam/Chelsea/Connor garbage to the backburner. They are eating the show alive.
I look forward to seeing Sharon tackle this with her man and her kids.

So right, Denise. The Adam and Chelsea takeover, not to mention that psychotic spawn of theirs, has to end. We just get rare 10-minute snippets of Michael, Traci, Lauren, Kevin, Paul. And what about Fen? They trot him out as holiday eye candy and then he disappears! And now a Tessa triangle? Please!

Jordi is a good man and he and Case can make this work I do not want her with JM we have been on that merry go round! I loved them in the day JM is stupid SC put him on the map that was true love now let’s move on

Not another one!
Story will be dead in the water!, Similar to Nikkis ms, michael baldwins cancer, jills quick heart condition revovery.
The last real medical health awareness story was Ashleys cancer. It was complex and also played into several umbrella stories like Brad turning to Olivia, Abby finding out her real parentage and Victor being told.
Josh isnt talented enough to do it justice and I can already gaurentee Sharons condition is only written because Josh doesnt know what to do with her and all will he forgotten come summer when Josh is shown the back door

You obviously no nothing about ms. It can be exactly like Nikki’s with maybe one flare up a year. My granddaughter has it and hers was diagnosed 6 years ago and she has had 2 flare ups since diagnosis. To the naked eye she is as healthy as the next person, holds down a full time job and takes her ms meds

Semantics
Its barely if at all mentioned ever
There was no public service awareness made from it
It was basically a plot device
Poorly executed. That was my point
..and yes. I have a family member also with it. Im fully aware. Thanks. Good luck to your grandmother. Wasnt trying to hit anyone personally

Damian -those diagnosed with MS ARE NOT required to verbally mention it every single day in order to make you happy. FYI Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) was diagnosed with MS in 2013. Anything profound you would like to say?

Golly gee Anne!
The point i was trying to make was not specific to MS Anne nor meant to be profound. If you didnt eat a pickle you could read it was more about Josh Griffiths capability as a headwriter.
Im a bored viewer tired of medical stories that get dropped or rushed. As such a profound viewer as yourself im sure you ll find your highly intelligible tastes satisfied by watching a primetime medical drama where im sure those situations are better played out. Dont forget to take a chill pill while your at it. Profound enough for you?

Dont forget, Victor has Colleen’s heart and NEVER has any health issues in that regard and drinks alcohol, to boot!

That’s the writers fault not the actors to watch MS is disgusting she try’s to hard nothing about her that is sexy she looks like a 54 year old woman trying to be a ingenue time to grow up

My aren’t you the spoil sport!

We cant all be such a treat like you

Damien -you really must leave your mother’s basement more often.

I hope this storyline lasts longer then three weeks glad to hear SC is finally going to get a storyline of her own!

This will be a fantastic story-line for Sharon Case. This might be next year Emmy worthy. I’m glad to see a soap once again doing a social story instead mind control, bombs, jumping forward or mob related. This is just good old fashion storytelling which is what soaps do best tell a story and have the time to go in depth. This is what soaps have lost now days.

With the people writing at Y&R right now, I doubt this will be compelling. It’s a publicity stunt to garner ratings for the Grande Dame of soaps.

Why don’t they simply make the PSA’s..
I really don’t want to be dragged through Another cancer story..
Knowing about breast cancer is a must.
There are organizations and doctors and support centres.
The ”real deal” to lead and help one through it.
and no way is it correct for a soap to dramatize it/cancer.
for 1–
Sharon will Not lose her hair= phoney
She won’t be in deadly pain bedridden using the drugs
She won’t vomit after Chemo nor lose 15 lbs.
She won’t die.

I’ve always been against soaps and their drama-filled stories of near-death
conditions, they are quite soapy phoney.
never the whole of them.

And– they are boring and it’s not a good thing to watch a dramatized version. It’s not a good thing imo .
Just give the PSA’s don’t soapy them up.

I kind of agree with you it won’t show how she gets in a financial struggle with bills and healthcare bills or having to deal with the struggle of keep going to chemo or radiation and how some employers give you a hard time with all the time off even though you have FMLA protection or taking care of little ones some many different scenarios with trying to fight BC waking up one day and in the shower recognizing your hair coming out or waking up in the morning looking at your pillow. Not having the support from friends and family members just so much they will not show this will be like a walk in the park that could be farther then the truth.

Hi Jan– what you wrote is perfect, it is reality.
and a soap cancer story will simply soapy it up and we will not see any of what you wrote.

Breast cancer, all cancers, are horrific.
I’d imagine many people watching the
soap cancer story will have/know of someone,
family or friends fighting cancer and know personally of their horrific frightening struggle.
Watching a cancer ”fluff’ story is just that, fluff..
it’s a soapy drama portrayal, a fictional drama, not close to reality.

Having a soap opera giving a breast cancer story that will not and can not portray the actual journey that is faced, is wrong and belittling to actual breast cancer peoples and their loved ones.
(((Sharon will not lose her hair or a breast nor her life.

I am blessed to not have cancer nor anyone in my family, but I had a friend that struggled and died from cancer, it was not as in a soap story…

((I really am against soaps PSA stories))

Spot on. Terminal illness is not a fantasy story line where next year Sharon will be yukking it up and acting as if it never happened. I miss Y&R. I used to love my daily dose. I even shell out for CBS All Access where all the episodes are commercial free, available anytime I want, and I just don’t watch anymore. Sad. I am trying to get back into GH and Days. Days I have on my DVR and GH on Hulu as long as I watch the day it airs. Who knew it’d be a struggle to keep up with shows I didn’t DARE miss back in the day? Or that it would come down to saying…”Just NO”.

Her story is not realistic, she would be a lot sicker.. loosing her hair. Instead she looks happy as a clam! Make up and hair on point everyday! What cancer patient had the energy to do their hair and make up Everyday And remain peppy? They Need to do the story justice and do it correctly and realistically.

Once again a soap is going to pretend to be socially relevant so they can air one or two “Be sure to be checked”…20 second spots at the end of the show. The issue is important, don’t get me wrong, but its the every two year token script of the few remaining soaps. With Victor’s “mystery illness – seemingly cured”, and Niki’s MS…will this be written any better?

I watch the soaps not just for amusement but to also take my mind off other things. I’ve had breast cancer twice, and I sure as hell don’t need to be reminded of everything it entailed. Of course it will be factual but it will also be a lot more dramatic than the actual events. I’m sure S.C will tackle this SL as she does every other one.Hopefully it will be done as tastefully and realistically as the one with Adrienne on Days.

Eileen Davidson/Ashley had the cancer storyline years ago and it was written well I understand completely why people are not sure Griffin can pull it off because the last year the show has been as bad as it was with MY if not worse I am just ready to stop with the Chelsea show !!! Case deserves better then wiping tables down and being a punching bag again while the con rapist character is on five days a week and the return of Adam has been a bust . Adam should have stayed dead when Muhney was let go if soaps are going to kill a character off then you sometimes have to stick with that decision that’s why I finally quit Days years ago they made a joke out of death.

Kay, I agree with everything you said, very well written…THANK YOU

Thanks Kevin the soaps will prevail and we do need new families but I would love to see Eric Braeden grab Sharon and say my sweetheart they had awesome chemistry the best in daytime as father in law etc then the dragon lady MAB came in and ruined it! Joshua morrow and Sharon case were awesome I would love to see them back together but I know JM does not want that so we move on they were star crossed sweeties the storyline of losing Cassie was awesome I will always pull for them even though I know JM does not sometimes you have to listen to viewers they know what’s best

She will nail it! She is awesome. I hope the show dives into the issue deep. She will be game. I hope Adam and Nick get to be part of her support system. Not a fan of Rey!

Victor needs to be her support he has always loved her the daughter in law they were awesome I miss that

You are right and I think he will be there for her.

I personally hate medical storylines. Who on this planet does not know about breast cancer & that they need to self-exam, get mammograms, etc, etc. I will speed through this.

A great topic is going to be explained to those women who do not have regular mammograms. please pay attention ladies. Ty Young N restless for sharing the most important reason for these mammograms

Personally I think the cancer that needs a bigger spotlight, is skin cancer. There is this notion, it is not as serious, or easily cured, but many skin cancers are deadly and the reality is most people do not check or investigate unusual bumps, moles or pimples until it is way too late — most women know to check their breasts, those who do will continue and those who don’t will probably not start because a soap did a story line on it.

However I venture not many women understand that pimple on their face that won’t go away, the one they keep covering up with makeup might be skin cancer- and if they saw photos of someone who had half their face removed so they could get all the layers of cancer cells, not just on the skin we can see but underneath as well–as part of a story line — then maybe, just maybe they would be motivated to go to a doctor and have that pimple looked at before it reaches that point

So if a soap truly wants to do a cancer story line perhaps focusing on a different body part other than breasts for women and prostrate for men, might be the way to switch it up and bring true awareness

I totally agree with you about skin cancer. Melanoma can be fast-moving and deadly, and early detection is key, yet people don’t really have an awareness of it. (There are other types of skin cancer that are less aggressive, too, but you can’t just assume you’ve got one of the slower-moving kinds.) End of PSA.

Case is bringing it when you are in trouble you pull out the big guns her portrayal is spot on !! God bless the Queen!!!

Yes I adore her always have always will she brings it every time and let’s get honest she has been thrown crap stories now she has a time to shine

Case will bring it give her a chance I adore her it will be fine but yes I would like to see Noah and where the hell is her Mom

I am as always very supportive of the daytime genre grew up as a kid on soaps loved them will always be supportive even when I would love to shake the crap out of the writers!!! Will pray for this genre always be supportive and please give Eric Braeden a wonderful 40 th he deserves it and so very sorry that you did not do a wonderful tribute to Doug he deserved it

The nature of illnesses aside, I’m just very grateful that Y&R is finally doing a STORYLINE.

I agree with a lot of these comments. This story line will be all fluffed up. As a breast cancer survivor since 2009 and now battling Multiple Myeloma which is incurable I wish more awareness was given to children’s cancer or blood cancers. I’m not knocking breast cancer I’m a survivor but we need to raise more awareness for different cancers. Why do storyline now?? Why not do it in October when it’s Breast Cancer month. #CANCER SUCKSNOTALLCANCERISPINK

I personally find it overwhelming. As a Cancer Survivor, it just hits to close to home.

I love Sharon Case she is an excellent actress! Her story line about breast cancer is very compelling and it will awaken awareness of this. God Bless you Sharon and all the rest of the cast. I LOVE Y&R!!

I find that she should be killed off. Just to show that not everyone should survive cancer in every way. Because cancer does not always cure everyone.

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

It’s a milestone we couldn’t let pass by without taking some time to celebrate as a family (and, of course… eating some cake). 🍰 We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.”

WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON THE 16,000th Episode?

The 16,000th episode will feature Jason Morgan returning to the town of Port Charles, Anna and Valentin (James Patrick Stewart) reuniting, and a new surgeon, Dr. Tristan Roberts (Dean Geyer) joining the staff of ‘General Hospital.’
