Y&R’s Melissa Ordway and Conner Floyd Talk the Future of Abby & Chance, Being Recasts and The Secret to Soap Opera Tears

Photo: JPI

The Young and the Restless‘ Melissa Ordway (Abby) and Conner Floyd (Chance) chat with Michael Fairman in their first joint virtual interview; since Connor joined the CBS Daytime drama seres in the role of “Chance” Chancellor via The Michael Fairman Channel.

Floyd replaces Donny Boaz, who was let go from the series earlier this year and was last seen on-air in early February. In between the hiring of Floyd, Melissa Ordway’s real-life husband, Justin Gaston, stepped into the role during a pivotal point in the on-screen duo’s story, when Chance and Abby wed.

Now that Conner has made his Y&R debut, Melissa and Conner touch upon: how Chance will have his struggles as he returns to Genoa City after his dangerous mission abroad; where he was feared dead.

But as Y&R viewers know, in story, Abby knew and felt otherwise, leading to their reunion. But as the actors share in this interview, will it be happily ever after for the on-screen duo?

Chance is coming home to his newborn son, Dominic, but both Mariah (Camryn Grimes) and Devon (Bryton James) have a strong attachment to the baby given the little one’s complicated history, which will cause more tension and drama in the weeks and months ahead, and as Melissa teases, Abby and Devon have always had a pull towards each other which could further complicate Chance’s homecoming.

During the conversation, Conner and Melissa open up about the the audition process for recasting the role of Chance, and what words of advice Melissa imparted to Conner – Ordway was a recast herself for the role of Victor (Eric Braeden) and Ashley’s (Eileen Davidson) daughter back in 2013. In addition, the duo share how they get themselves to cry when called for in the script and the answers may surprise you.

I think we need some solid coupling on Y&R and believe Abby and Chance are it. I need to see this couple thrive. The Abby-Devon attraction is not compelling. Chance’s adjustment would make a great plot. I would like to see Abby adjust to working again. These are legacy characters and good actors. Please protect them from character assassination and bad stories. I’d like to see Chance with Paul, Ray, Kevin, Michael, and Christine is an Edge of Night-type story that would revive law and order in Genoa City. Nebulous communications companies are not that exciting.

I don’t mind Abby and Chance staying together…They deserve one another. B-O-R-I-N-G. She’s so hovering and he’s SO DULL he makes Devon seem like Personality Plus! This story has invaded the show like termites and shows no sign of letup. Meanwhile, no Baldwins, Fishers, Traci, Paul. Too much Billy and his ENDLESS psychoses isn’t helping either right now.

Soaphound,
Agree. They certainly are boring. Funny I didn’t feel that way with the other Chance. So which is the problem, old Abby or new Chance? Someone needs to get the pruning shears after him, only if it just gets Abby out of his hair, totally annoying!

Violet, as you’ve probably gathered from my posts I’m a big fan of men with a full head of hair. Billy Miller, Josh Swickard, Joshua Morrow..all have great hair when they’re allowed to keep it. But this goofy habit Abby has developed (and I spotted Jill doing it also) of twirling and petting his unruly locks has become distracting. Normally performers are so appearance conscious I imagine they object to having their hair mussed…so maybe this was an agreed-on thing? And, sadly, it’s the only interesting thing about this dreary couple. And I’m afraid this is only the beginning of the trials of ChAbby. After all, even Victor is championing him!

Well said.

This couple is a bore The writing is nothing and the chance recast is a miss as are new Noah and Moses restless needs a story and outside of nick Sharon Phyllis and sally there are no other characters to care about

I disagree on nuNoah. I think Rory Gibson is soulful and very competent. He’s playing the character just right… depressed and a little adrift right now. But nuChance? So far he’s just a mumbling mannequin. And please, NO JACK AND PHYLLIS AGAIN! We gave already.

Soaphound, I completely agree with your assessments of Nu-Chance and Nu-Noah. Yes, He is “ soulful” and “competent.” He has a lovely drawl and bedroom eyes. The Chance recast just doesn’t have it. He lacks charisma and just gives a somnolent performance. Abby us already a note, now she’s even more boring. Oh well. At least they replaced the blanket with a real baby. Right now, the only person on Y&R worth watching is Sally.

Oh Harry, I was watching Friday’s episode and whenever Chance’s “bravery” was mentioned, I started to think… the bravest thing this fellow could do is leave home without hair gel and a mirror. Is it just me, or does he mumble? I find myself putting on the Closed Captions when he’s on. Noah, on the other hand, I could uh..listen to, yeah listen to, ALL DAY.

Soaphound
Hey, we finally got a real live baby. He’s cute but doesn’t look too comfortable with daddy Chance. Then again, maybe it’s all those clothes they keep him in, in the house, including hat. I like the new Noah, but hate seeing his cow eyes looking at Tessa. His girlfriend should be popping by soon. Maybe that was her we saw on Friday.

Imagine, Violet, Noah works several years in England/Europe meeting hundreds of available women and can only find (1) a heartbreaker and (2) Tessa, for whom he carries an unlikely, unextinguishable torch. Wow, not exactly a man of the world. I hope they find someone ELSE for such a beautiful, sweet, likeable fellow. And I love the possibility of a friendship/ bromance with Uncle Adam. That would be a sweet oasis. Oh, and back to Chance & Abby…will they PLEASE stop copulating on living room furniture! Eccchhh!

Soaphound,
Every time I see these couples making out on the sofa, no showers after, just get up and leave I think as you do. It’s disgusting, even though it’s not real, and as in the case of Abby and Chase and a lot of others, it’s not like they don’t have beds. They want spontaneity, but it’s still sickening to a lot of us.
Just a few words about Chance and his reaction to Devon and Dominic. I may be wrong but does he not resent the fact that Devon just comes and goes as he pleases? I won’t bore you with all I would have to say, if I was in Chance’s shoes. Devon may be the biological father but Chance seems to be the stand in dad, not the other way around. Anyway, I think it stinks.

Violet, am I wrong but shouldn’t Devon and Mariah have signed contracts agreeing to have no role in Dommy’s life? Abby is going to regret not doing things legally. The “I want you both to be in my son’s life in a BIG WAY” gesture is backfiring. And me thinks Devon is overstepping as usual, thinking he knows what’s best for everyone.

Soaphound,
Maybe Iam wrong but Iam pretty sure I heard them mention a contract a couple of times with Devon and Mariah too. Let’s hear from others about this.

Violet Lemm…Even with the covid precautions on Y&R and GH I’m wondering what parents would allow their babies to be live on these soaps right now.

Hope her gets better in role and yes chance not her and Devon come on writers get better not worse although need new good writers. Not coming back to old lovers. Stories getting worse

I would absolutely love to see Abby and Devon together and it looks like I’m in n the minority here but I’ve always loved their friendship and chemistry and always felt that there was something more and deeper between them. Just my opinion guys but I love me some Abby and Devon!!!

Mister J, I’m surprised to say I’m beginning to agree. Mainly because this Chance character is way too high maintenance and apparently will always put his job first, though he claims otherwise. And let’s face it, Devon is going to be the one to challenge Chance’s paternal shortcomings. I thought it was going to be Mariah, but she’s gonna have enough trouble keeping Tessa & Noah apart. Abby can’t seem to get a break in the romance department; I guess she takes after Ashley.

Well this actor is DOA on arrival MO has absolutely no chemistry with anyone and JG writing her as a lead actress ugh! This was my favorite soap for years I have now not watched a full episode in three years ! Sharon still pouring coffee ! Phyllis still swinging her arms and stealing clothes from her daughters closet dresses like a hooker! Billy the same whiner that he was back in 2012 Victor still the same one week mad they next week hugging somebody just stupif

Neat video with Melissa Ordway and Conner Floyd. Nice behind-the-scenes tid bits.

Absolutely boring-change the storyline or get them off the air

General Hospital’s Jophielle Love Talks On Violet’s Emotional Scenes with Finn, the Loss of Gregory, and Taylor Swift

During General Hospital’s recent episodes surrounding the death of Gregory Chase (Gregory Harrison), who succumbed to complications from ALS, many in the cast delivered touching performances; including Jophielle Love (Violet).

In story, Violet learns of her grandfather’s passing when she comes home from school and her father, Finn (Michael Easton) sits her down to explain that Gregory passed away in the middle of the night. Violet’s reaction was one of devastation and tears.

Michael Fairman TV caught with Jophielle on the red carpet at the recent 51st annual Daytime Creative Arts and Lifestyle Emmy Award ceremonies, where she was a nominee for Best Original Song for the song she co-wrote, “Shine.” The track was first heard back on a December 2023 episode of the ABC daytime drama series and is currently available on Spotify and other music streaming platforms.

When talking about the departure of Gregory Harrison, and Violet’s reaction to her grandpa’s passing, Love shared, “Well, I was very tired from the taping of the three-day wedding, so I already had the tears in me. I knew that I was always going to see him (Gregory Harrison) in real life, but I was also very, very sad he was leaving the show. He was such a delight to work with.”

When Violet saw how difficult it was for her on-screen dad, Finn, to cope with with the death of Gregory, Love shared, “It’s hard for Violet, but Michael and I, we still see each other and he’s always happy (in real life). But, those scenes were hard. I was comforting him.”

Photo: ABC

Receiving her first Daytime Emmy nomination as songwriter was a thrill for Jophielle: “Well first of all, I was jumping up and down and Frank Valentini (executive producer, GH) came and told me while I was on set. I was just so excited.”

Photo: JPI

Since pop superstar, Taylor Swift, started at a very young age as a singer and a songwriter, does Love see herself as a mini-Taylor? Jophielle emphatically stated, “I’m a mini Me“.  As to what she thinks of the record-setting Swift’s music, and if she likes her work. Love shared, “Yeah, yeah … so, so…”

What did you think of Jophielle’s performance during the passing of Gregory? And her comments here on Gregory Harrison, Michael Easton and Taylor Swift? Comment below.

GH’s Evan Hofer Talks Life for Dex After Sonny’s Beatdown, Giovanni Mazza, and If Josslyn is Love Endgame

General Hospital’s Dex Heller (Evan Hofer) has been at the epicenter of Sonny Corinthos’ (Maurice Benard) paranoia, which led to the beatdown of Sonny’s former right hand man.

Now, Dex is licking his wounds, and trying to move on with his life after joining the PCPD; following attempting to move away from working for the mob and under Sonny’s thumb. Problem is, Dex has a soft spot for Sonny. Meanwhile, looks like there still may be a future for Dex and Josslyn (Eden McCoy) as the two are trying to mend their once-fractured relationship.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Evan Hofer at the 51st annual Daytime Creative Arts and Lifestyle Emmys (in which Hofer was a presenter during the ceremonies), to discuss the current life and times of his Port Charles alter-ego.

Photo: DHoferIG

Evan has now gotten to see and feel first-hand what is like working in soaps and television, when you have to wear prosthetics on your face after Sonny accosted Dex at Brook Lynn and Chase’s wedding reception.

Hofer recalled the experience. “Our makeup team is incredible. Priscilla, my makeup artist is just so talented. She layered silicone every day so she could control the swelling, so that way, she would have control over how it looked as it progressed and, you know, decreased, increased,” Hofer revealed. “She was incredible and very, very detailed.”

Paying a nod to actors who have to take on TV or movie roles where they have to wear complete facial prosthetics, Evan shared, “I do not envy people who wear full face prosthetics. I think my longest tape day was probably seven hours in it. I got a little claustrophobic. It does cause you to have a lack of of depth perception, which is a rough one.”

Photo: ABC

Hofer weighed-in on if he thinks Dex will ever turn in Sonny and press charges against him for his character’s recent beatdown. “I hope he doesn’t. It’s hard though, because he loves him (Sonny) and that’s the problem,” stated Evan. “That’s what we do with people we love. It’s almost an abusive parent relationship, isn’t it? I have this theory that Dex almost feels like he deserves these things.”

Now might be the time for the GH writers to explore more of Dex’s backstory which could include a backstory of abuse. “I really would love them to. I think it’d be incredible,” hoped Evan. However, he added, “I’m just grateful for whatever I get to do every day and excited for whatever story we get to tell.  Something like The Departed – undercover with the mob- would be cool (for a storyline), and then everybody’s wondering which side I’m on the whole time.”

Photo: ABC

Is there hope for Dex and Josslyn fans that they will still may be each other’s love endgame? Hofer teased, “I think they start spending a little more time together, but who knows what’ll happen. You never know on a soap opera. Maybe Dex’s evil twin will show up and steal Josslyn away.”

Photo: ABC

A few months back, Evan shared some major scenes with the one and only Finola Hughes (Anna). In story, Dex admits he was going to kill Cyrus on Sonny’s orders. Hofer shared it was a big moment for him since his time being on GH. “What an honor to get to do those scenes with Finola. I had only worked with her once before and that was when Dex broke her out of prison and he got shot the first time,” recalls Hofer. “She’s all about working the scenes ahead of time, which I am, too. We got to get a lot of reps in and when we get up there on stage, she’s incredibly affecting. I’ll kind of have an idea of maybe of how the scene will go, and then I’ll just look in her eyes and suddenly I am just so in a different space that she’s pulled me into. In those scenes, having Dex feel like someone cares about him was really beautiful.”

Photo: ABC

Recently, Giovanni Mazza premiered as Gio. In Hofer’s first on-screen scenes with Mazza, the two talk about Gio’s dad having been in the military and Dex’s experience in the Army and serving in Afghanistan.

This raised some GH viewers eyebrows to what if the two characters could somehow be related? Perhaps, brothers? Evan responded to those inquiring minds, “Oh, I don’t know. We look pretty alike. There is the military connection. I think it’ll be interesting. Those first scenes we had together were incredible. I was so excited to work with Geo. He couldn’t be any nicer really. He’s an incredible person. He’s so easy to be around. We hang out outside of work all the time, already.”

Photo: JPI

Does Evan think there will come a day where Jason (Steve Burton), Dex and Sonny will all be working together on the same side, and thus, Sonny will have both his former henchman at his disposal?  While Hofer doesn’t know what’s coming down the pike, he expressed, “It’s been incredible to have Steve around. He’s a really wonderful man. I’d only met him on Zoom previously to him coming back.  I hope we get to work together more. We got one batch of scenes together and I hope we get to do more soon.”

Photo: ABC

As to what GH viewers should be on the lookout for in the weeks ahead, Evan teased, “We’ll see what Joss and Dex get into, and we’ll see what happens within the police department.”

So, are you rooting for Dex and Joss? Do you want Dex back working for Sonny, or hope he stays with the PCPD? Would you want to see more of Dex’s backstory explored? Comment below.
