52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards Call For Entrants Underway: Nominations Timeline, Category and Voting Changes
As previously announced, the Daytime Emmy Awards are being pushed back till October of this year. Marking the first time the ceremony has been held in the fall. Usually, by April or May, the nominations are revealed, but due to the change this year, April is currently bringing about the entrants call for submissions to be considered for a nomination in their respective categories.
According to the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, who administers and runs the annual competition, there is a revised timeline for this year’s 52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
First, the call for entrant’s initial deadline was Thursday April 3, with the late entry deadline is set for next week on Thursday, April 17th. Judging will take place from Thursday May 22nd, through Monday June 9th. NATAS is targeting a full nominations announcement in June or early July with the date to be determined. Following that, there will be a several months wait to hand out the golden statuette until the 52nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards and the Daytime Creative Arts ceremony will be held in October (at a date to be determined) in Los Angeles.

As of yet, there has been no broadcast partner announced for this year’s ceremony leaving fans to speculate the show will go back to streaming only. CBS previously aired the show on a Friday nights over the summer months from 2020-2024 and even extended their agreement through the 2024 ceremony making it the 18th time that the network broadcast daytime’s biggest night of the year.
Let’s take a look below at some other key elements in Emmy submission and voting for 2025:

ELIGIBLITY
Beyond the Gates is not eligible for contention at this year’s Daytime Emmys having premiered on February 24, 2025. The 52nd annual Daytime Emmy Awards consider eligibility to be from episodes, shows and performances that aired or streamed from January 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024. It will be in 2026 that Beyond the Gates will first be able to participate in the competition.
NEW CATEGORIES
Previously, NATAS made the announcement that after getting rid of the Younger Performer in a Drama Series category last year, they have try to address the inherent issues with the category by coming up with a different slant on it. The new category for this year’s competition is Outstanding Emerging Talent in a Daytime Drama Series. Here are the guidelines to submit for this category:
-
- There is NO age restriction for this category.
- Performer has been on the Daytime Drama Program for two years or less, thereby limiting category eligibility for two years total per performer.
- Performer is on their first Daytime contract.
- Performer has no previous Daytime Emmy acting nominations; and Performer has never won this category – previous winners will be allowed to henceforth enter Guest, Supporting, or Lead as applicable.
- Performer must be onscreen in a speaking role with at least one multi-episode story arc.
In addition, the Culinary categories under the Daytime Emmys have been split into two – Culinary Instructional Series and Culinary Cultural Series and the same for Travel series. They have been split into Travel and Adventure Program, Nature and Science Program, plus Outstanding Regional Content in a Daytime Genre (this is not a competition category but a recognition one).
LENGH OF SUBMISSIONS
All categories requiring clip reels instead of full episodes are not to exceed 15 minutes in length. Meanwhile, the Single Camera Directing and Multiple Camera Directing categories have been adjusted to allow reels to feature full episodes, keeping in line with the Outstanding Directing for a Daytime Drama Series category. It should be noted that actors can choose to put in various scenes on their reel if they choose from different episodes or from a full episode as long as it stays within the parameters of submission duration.

WHO JUDGES?
New parameters for voting are being introduced as the Daytime Emmys move toward a stated goal of members-only judging come 2026.
NATAS is no longer utilizing a system of “parity” within the Drama acting categories, e.g. programs are no longer guaranteed equal representation on the acting panels. Instead, performers registering to judge will be assigned to three categories each within the following parameters:
-
- Actors are still NOT permitted to judge the category they are entered into.
- All actors will be assigned to two Drama acting categories and one Hosting category.
- Administration strongly encourages actors to participate in the Host category as these categories require on-screen talent as judges.
ACTING CATEGORIES
There has been a clarification to the rule prohibiting actors from entering twice for the same program. According to NATAS, “The spirit of this rule is to make sure that actors playing multiple roles on a single program simultaneously can only enter once, with all of their characters on the same reel. (An example would be Jon Lindstrom on General Hospital if playing twins: Kevin Collins and Ryan Chamberlain). However, this rule has been tweaked to allow for actors to enter multiple times for the same program if they exit as one character and return as a different character, and they are not playing both of those characters simultaneously. (An example would be Emily O’Brien on Days of our Lives when playing Theresa Donovan and Gwen Rizczech) In these cases, actors are permitted to enter twice and even if they don’t, they can only enter for the character(s) being played simultaneously on a singular reel.”

So, what are your thoughts on the timeline, and some of the changes for this year’s upcoming 52nd annual Daytime Emmy Awards? Who would you like to see nominated for the work from performances in 2024? Let us know in the comment section.
I hope General Hospital wins again for best daytime drama
I’m hoping anything but overrated general hospital it’s win enough times and isn’t deserving this year
I have been watching GH faithfully for a few years now. There has been a few headscratchers when it comes to storylines, but the acting has always been top notch. This year, I would love to see Nancy Lee Grahn win Best Actress and Michael Easton win Best Actor. Nancy’s performances during Kelly Monoco’s exit (Sam’s death) were some of the best I have ever seen. It reminded of the pain I felt when Zach died on DOOL and Hope was devastated. Michael Easton’s performamces during Gregory’s death and his descent into alcohol were amazing. His goodbye scenes with Violet were amazing.
Thank you for pointing out that Beyond The Gates is not eligible for this year’s awards because it premiere in 2025 and these awards are for 2024 performances
I hope the awards will be televised on broadcast tv and not streamed. Some people can not watch streamed programs.
‘The Jennifer Hudson Show’ should be considered for a Daytime Emmy this year. The popularity of the Spirit Tunnel and her show is really great.
I think the fans should be able to vote for their favorite actors and shows
I don’t feel they should it would be slanted for one show to win we don’t need the general hospital awards
They did that for the Soap Opera Digest Awards (back when there were about 10 soaps on air). The Emmys are recognition by your peers, which means more than random fan voting.
And when they did have the soap opera digest awards Days of our lives swept every year causing a rule change
There could be a different award show for fan favorite picks. Like People’s Choice awards should have Daytime drams categories.
Please have the daytime emmys televised, I cannot do streaming
I believe that it’s airing on CBS
I know that actors have to submit their names. Here are some choices for nominees:
Steve Burton (GH), Linsey Godfrey (DAYS) Susan Seaforth Hayes (DAYS), Genie Francis (GH), Eric Martsolf (DAYS). Would be nice to have new blood. No offense, but having the same Best Actress each year makes it not interesting. I am sure that Laura Wright, Michelle Stafford, Jacqueline Wood are wonderful actresses, but give others a chance to submit their work and have them shine. All the above have won multiple times. JMO
I’d love to see Susan seaforth Hayes nominated and win and honestly Michellereat Stafford Sharon case and Jacqueline wood are great at what they do and had banner years so even though I understand the new blood statement I expect 2 or the 3 of those women to be nominated
Hayes is the odds on favorite to win Supporting Actress. Case has a shot at Lead Actress, but Melody could submit her bender episodes, which would split the Y&R block. Nancy Lee Grahn may be the favorite in this category.
So Beyond the gates isn’t eligible? Lol the way everyone is praising it, say how great and historic it is, you’d think the pandering and placating Hollywood would make an exception for it. Maybe if it last more the 6 decades like GH, then they can praise it
It’s quite simple – these are awards for the calendar year 2024. Stop the hate – if you’re not interested – just don’t watch.
It’s only ineligible because the year ends 2024 and beyond the gates debuted this year
Santa Barbara and Ryan’s Hope were new soaps that didn’t last for six decades and no one begrudged them their Emmys. Interesting that under your standards it will take 60 years for a soap with an African American majority cast to be worthy of your praise.
Please air this on regular television. Because a lot of us do not and are not able to stream and that means we would miss something that’s very special and that we wait for each year. Thank you so much for listening to my response and please let it happen because we love our soaps.
When Beyond the Gates is eligible for the 2026 Daytime Emmys, I hope Karla Mosley and Trisha Mann-Grant are the only cast members who get nominated (Mosley in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series; Mann-Grant in Supporting). They are the only actresses with substantial storylines on that soap that can act.
Holding the ceremony in October makes it less likely one of the major networks would carry the show. October is full of sports (both football and World Series and launch of the NBA season) and the new broadcast entertainment season is just underway. The decision to hold the ceremony in October seems so short-sighted if they wanted a major network to carry the ceremony.
Actually, this makes it [more likely] to be picked up by networks, as it’s at the end of award season. But, ultimately, I’d prefer an online ceremony. The few years we had it online, it was better produced than what CBS has given us since 2020. And since the Primetime Emmys are being held on September 14, it actually makes logical sense.
Gonna agree with Rob here. The Daytime Emmys are not the ratings grab they once were. CBS would carry them in June after the regular primetime season was over and there was less original programming with lower ratings expectations.
Praying we get to see more of Neighbours nominated; they did quite well in 2024, with some incredible standout performances by several of their acting talents, and it should receive the recognition it rightfully deserves. And it just may push for a renewal before production concludes in July.

BEYOND THE GATES: A Tornado Hits Fairmont Crest Part 1: Eva and Martin on Seriously Injured List
On the Thursday, June 11 episode of Beyond the Gates the highly-anticipated tornado struck the Fairmont Crest Country Club while Martin Richardson was holding a fundraiser with the most prominent citizens of Genoa City and the D.C./Maryland area attending.
Martin tells the guest that weather reports indicate a tornado warning, and as he tells them to exit the ballroom to safety, the twister strikes sending everyone into peril,. Richardson and Dupree and Abbott family members are calling out for each other as chaos ensues.
Here is who got stuck with who: Dani and Bill are stuck in an elevator and begin to get hot and bothered after trying to escape. Hayley is stuck in a closet with Kyle Abbott and they makeout, and then to pass the time she puts on some tunes and they dance.

THOSE IN NEED OF MEDICAL ATTENTION
Things are much more serious for Kat and Eva who winds up in a closet but a mental wall comes crashing down upon them. As Kat rails at her sister, Eva says she doesn’t feel well and begins to spit up blood. Kat is a wreck and is trying to deal with her sister’s plight, but they are trapped.
Leslie is helping Anita with her injured ankle, while Vernon goes to try to restore some power, get walkie-talkies and do what he can for everyone inside Fairmont Crest. Nicole and Smitty hear a noise and realize Andre is buried under the rubble in the ballroom. As it turns Andre’s leg was injured when a piece of metal got stuck in it. Ted gets Andre stitched up and tells him to stay put.
The Genoa City contingent can’t locate Victor Newman or Kyle Abbott, as Jack and Diane try to help others. Meanwhile, suddenly yells out that someone is under the tree. Smitty and Nicole gasps as its Martin! He is not moving in and needs medical attention. Smitty fighting back tears asks Martin to squeeze his hand if he can hear him. But there is no response.
Abby Newman worried for the whereabouts of her father, walks away just as chandelier begins to fall from the ceiling, Diane screams out to Abby to watch out. We fade to black.
Beyond the Gates delivered as they had promised, a riveting episode and one of the best soap opera tornadoes harkening back to the days of All My Children. But what did you think of part one? Martin and Eva as the two characters currently most in trouble? What about Dani and Bill getting hot and heavy and Hayley kissin on Kyle? What was your favorite part of part 1? ‘Beyond the Gates’ Creator Michele Val Jean Reveals Top Three Favorite Storylines She Has Ever Written For, and All From ‘General Hospital’
If there is a story or script from one of your favorite soaps over the last three and a half decades that is most memorable to you, it’s probably because veteran soap writer, Michele Val Jean had something to do with it.
The current creator, head writer and executive producer of CBS daytime’s Beyond the Gates has been razzle dazzling us with some impressive cliffhangers in the infancy of the newest soap opera on the block which debuted back on February 24, 2025. Already in its second season, and recently renewed in a tremendous show of confidence by CBS for seasons three and four, this week its spotlighting the highly-anticipated crossover event when characters from The Young and the Restless arrive at Fairmont Crest airing now through June 12.
Val Jean has tenured history in daytime from: being a script writer for Santa Barbara (and breakdown writer), Port Charles, Generations, and lengthy run a few times at General Hospital where she served as script writer, breakdown writer, and at one time co-head writer of the ABC soap, to being a long-running script writer at The Bold and the Beautiful, to finally landing her very own show as its head writer with Beyond the Gates.

Photo: CBS
Earlier this week, Michael Fairman TV chatted with Michele at the Toast to Black Excellence event in Los Angeles, featuring cast members of Beyond the Gates and The Young and the Restless as a precursor to their multi-arc crossover event and asked Val Jean what has been her favorite story in soaps she has ever written for. She responded that she had a top three and they all happened to be from her time on General Hospital and in the 90’s.
GENERAL HOSPITAL CLASSIC STORYLINES
Michele revealed her top picks, “Elizabeth’s (Rebecca Herbst) rape, because that was personal, Kevin and Ryan (dual roles played by Jon Lindstrom), and Stone’s (Michael Sutton) death.”
When speaking of getting the opportunity to write for mild-mannered Dr. Kevin Collins and his psycho killer twin, Ryan Chamberlain, Michele explained, “I was always like a true crime person and Claire Labine (ex-head writer, GH) loved the vibe Jon Lindstrom and I has as writing and acting were concerned. Claire said, ‘Go with it. So, she basically let us work out who these characters were and I was like, ‘I finally have my own serial killer!'”

DOUBLE TROUBLE
“One of the first scenes I wrote for Ryan was in the police interrogation room and Mac Scorpio (John J. York) and Sean Donely (John Reilly) were standing behind him. He was sitting at this table and in his jumpsuit and there was a light shining on him and he started confessing to all these murders. It was like a 7-minute monologue and it went on and on. He had so many murders (piled up). and then at one point, he goes, ‘Wait, a minute!” He got confused about all the women he had murdered and I said ‘I love this character!'”
GH fans will recall Ryan debuted first in 1992, and then Kevin joined the main characters in 1993. Val Jean recalled, “When Kevin came onto the canvas, he was so arrogant. He thought, ‘Oh, I’ll go fix my brother.’ It took Ryan about five minutes to figure out who Kevin was. The next thing you know, Kevin’s in the middle of a mental institution going, ‘I’m not Ryan!’ And, Ryan’s out on a date with Felicia (Kristina Wagner) I think we must have killed Ryan off six times. That was fun!”

PERSONAL VANTAGE POINT
In 1998, Val Jean wrote Elizabeth Webber’s rape storyline. She notably based the controversial and critically acclaimed storyline on her own personal experience with sexual assault.
Michele reflected, “Elizabeth’s rape was really important to me because I was watching the Campus Disco in 1979 (when Luke raped Laura), and I was raped when I was 12-years-old. I know what rape looks like. I wanted to win Tony Geary (Luke) an Emmy because he hadn’t had one since 1983. I also wanted to call a rape a “rape,” and I wanted to heal myself, because back when I grew up on the south side of Chicago in the sixties, you didn’t go to therapy. You pulled yourself up by your bootstraps, and you went on. There was a trial and my rapist went to jail. Once that was over, there was no more talking about it. So, those were my three reasons for doing that story. I managed to do all three, and that was the most personally satisfying.”

STONE AND ROBIN
Perhaps, there is nothing more iconic and important, than the death of Stone Cates, who tragically dies of AIDS. The episode where he passes away with his girlfriend, a young Robin (Kimberly McCullough) who now has contracted HIV by his side, aired on November 29, 1995. Val Jean had noted on social media that it was both an honor and a heartbreak to write this episode.

BEYOND THE GATES EARLY FAVORITES
Now, Michele is setting new favorites in her repertoire with Beyond the Gates. She revealed that so far, there have been two standouts. The first, the violent altercation on a deserted country road where Martin (Brandon Claybon) fatally struck one of two racist white men with a tire iron to save his grandfather, Vernon Dupree’s (Clifton Davis) life and his own.
“I am most proud of Martin by the side of the road (story), because I didn’t think the CBS network would let me do it, but the network has been so supportive. I took a lot of personal satisfaction from that. I’ve never experienced anything like that! ” Another top pick? I loved the anniversary party when Nicole’s (Daphnée Duplaix) marriage got all blown up!
So, are some of your all-time favorite storylines the ones Michele Val Jean chose? Elizabeth’s Rape, early Kevin/Ryan and Stone’s death on General Hospital? What about the racism storyline centering around Martin Richardson and the bombshell reveal on Beyond the Gates that Ted had an affair with Leslie and a child, which came to light at the anniversary party of Ted and Nicole? Ashley Jones Makes Her ‘Beyond the Gates’ Debut in a Shocking Reveal as ‘The Impaler’
As had been teased, the Monday, June 8 episode of Beyond the Gates brought with the the identity of The Impaler, the long-talked-about head of the blood plasma ring that involved Grayson Perez (Jordi Vilasuso), Dr. Lia Whitmore (Cecelia Specht), got Derek Baldwin (Ben Gavin) killed and had Jacob Hawthorne (Jibre Hordges) going under cover to nab the criminal.
Only in a major surprise and best kept secret, The Impaler turned out to be Joey’s Armstrong’s (Jon Lindstrom) younger sister, Heather, played by Ashley Jones! As we previously reported in April, Jones had joined the newest CBS daytime drama but we never knew what part she was playing until now.
This marks the first time in her veteran soap opera career she has played a nefarious evildoer. Previously, Ashley has been recurring as The Bold and the Beautiful as Dr. Bridget Forrester, portrayed Professor Parker Forsyth on General Hospital, plus got her soap start as Megan Dennison on The Young and the Restless.

SIBLING RIVALRY
If you caught today’s Beyond the Gates, in story, as Joey was awaiting coming face-to-face with The Impaler, he instead gets paid a visit from a woman in a cloak that initially concealed her face. When she revealed herself, Joey knew exactly who it was … his sister. Joey wondered how she is involved with The Impaler.
Apparently, it’s been a long while since the siblings had seen each other. Heather informed Joey she lived in London, and as Joey was trying to figure out the connection between her and The Impaler, she dropped the bombshell, “Oh, my dear brother. I am The Impaler.”
Joey initially laughed her off, until she explained she intentionally made everyone believe The Impaler was a man as a decoy. Suddenly, Joey realized this is not the same version of his sister he knew before, especially when she said, “I’m not the little girl you have to protect anymore. I’ve found my power.”
In the further backstory of the Armstrong children, Heather brings up how their father has used physical violence on Joey, while she dealt with his belief that a woman’s place is in the home, and raising children and to leave the mob business to the boys. As it turns out, Heather wants to work side by side with Joey combining forces to run their illegal activities. Later, when Joey admitted to Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli) that his sister had come to town. and he doesn’t really know of her true intentions, he left out the fact that Heather is The Impaler!

PLAYING A VILLAIN ON DAYTIME
Speaking with Parade, Jones said that she knew early on that she would be The Impaler, but wasn’t sure what that actually meant, “I hadn’t watched enough of the show, so I did a little research, explained Ashley. “I was like, ‘Oh, they talk about the Impaler a decent amount,’ and then I knew that I was somehow related to Joey Armstrong. So, I knew those two things, and I knew she was the head of a crime ring, and that was kind of all the information I got.”
Jones shared her enthusiasm to getting to play a villain on a soap, adding, “This is probably one of the more complicated characters I’ve ever played. There’s a lot to her,” obviously, at this point, people will know she’s the Impaler. She’s kind of the villain. I haven’t played this in Daytime really ever.”
What do you think about the reveal of Ashley Jones as Joey’s sister, Heather being the notorious Impaler? It seems that Beyond the Gates as pulled off yet another shocker! Weigh-in via the comment section, but first check out the reveal from today’s episode.
