John Stamos Reveals He was Sexually Abused as a Child, Ahead of The Release of His Memoir, ‘If You Would Have Told Me’

John Stamos’ new memoir, If You Would Have Told Me is due out next week on October 24th. Ahead of its nationwide release, the former General Hospital alum, (where he played Blackie Parrish at the beginning of his career from 1982-1984) is disclosing that he was actually a survivor of childhood sexual abuse for the first time.

As first reported by PEOPLEStamos says that he was abused by a babysitter when he was young.  The former Full House star says it took writing a book for him to truly acknowledge and access those memories. He believes it happened when he was “probably like 10 or 11”.

The actor expressed, “I mean, I knew, it was always in the back, and I do so much advocacy. I felt like, I remembered it slightly. It has always been there, but I packed it away as people do, right?”  Stamos said that at the time, he “didn’t tell” anyone, adding “I think I told myself, like, ‘Ah, it’s girls, man.'” John added, “It was like you’re playing dead so they’ll stop. But it wasn’t totally aggressive. I don’t know, it was not good.”

Stamos shared that he first attempted to deal with those memories when accepting an award relating to his advocacy work for abused children. However, when it came to writing that particular acceptance speech, John came to the realization that he has more in common with the kids he worked with then he thought  Ultimately, he chose not to disclose that part of his childhood at that time, noting, “Tonight is not about me. It’s about the kids. I’m going to pack it away again until the right moment.”

According to the loglines of Stamos’ new memoir: “John burst onto the scene in General Hospital, propelling him into the teen idol stratosphere, a place that’s often a point of no return. But Stamos beat the odds and over the past four decades has proved himself to be one of his generation’s most successful and beloved actors. Whether showing off his comedic chops on Full House or his dramatic skills on ER, pushing the boundaries on Broadway or living out his youthful dreams as an honorary Beach Boy, John has surprised everyone, most of all himself.  A universal story about friendship, love, loss, and the courage to embrace love once more, John Stamos’s memoir is filled with some of the most memorable names in Hollywood, both old and new. Funny, deeply poignant, and brutally honest, If You Would Have Told Me is a portrait of a boy who went from believing in Disney magic to a man who learns that we have to create our own magical moments in life.”

Who wants to read the memoirs of a d list “star”

I do!

He’s never been a favorite of mine either, but I wouldn’t wish child abuse (or sexual abuse, which is what it sounds like this probably was) on anyone, and it’s brave of him to come forward and talk about it; major props to him for that. It might help someone else who’s been through it. I hope he’s been able to heal.

I would rather read a D list star’s autobiography than read rude comments by an unknown.

All I know is I’ve liked him on TV, especially Full House and other roles he’s had on TV and movies. I do not care to read or hear about any child OR adult being sexually abused. How do people get enjoyment from that, it’s disgusting.

He was on a highly successful TV show still popular to this day amongst his many other projects. He’s not D list.

D-list star? He was a leading man on one of the most successful TV shows of all time, lol. I think your “list” needs some work.

middlebrow taste….

Only an A-list A-hole would trash someone, anyone,
who discloses being the victim of childhood abuse.

Well why did he want until his book comes out to break this story he could’ve helped other people by telling his story.

These things aren’t ever easy to talk about (and probably twice as hard for men, because there’s still a strong cultural presumption that if you’re victimized, it’s your own fault). He came forward when he was at a place in his life when he was ready and able to address the abuse. I’m much more inclined to applaud his courage in making his story public at all, ever–and it can still help other people.

GH’s Adam J. Harrington Reveals the Behind the Scenes Story of Becoming John “Jagger” Cates

When Adam J. Harrington showed up on all-new episodes of General Hospital, it shocked viewers of the long-running ABC soap opera, because he was the recast John “Jagger” Cates.

The character was previously played more than 30 years ago by Antonio Sabato Jr., and as fans of the soap have seen, Harrington’s version of Jagger and his circumstances are quite different. As it turns out, Adam was in the dark at what GH role he would be eventually cast in.

Speaking with GH co-stars, Steve Burton (Jason) and Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) on their Daily Drama podcast, Harrington shared the behind the scenes journey that led him to being the new version of John.

Photo: ABC

Adam shared, “I went into a chemistry read with Laura Wright (Carly) for a different character. I was told I wasn’t going to get the character, but hang tight, there’s something else. Then, that kind of took a couple of months and now we’re in December (2023), and then all of a sudden it was like, ‘here you go.'”

Once Adam was given a role on GH, he explained, “I still didn’t know who I was playing. I should have asked at that point. So the deal gets done, and I go, ‘By the way, who am I playing?'”

Photo: ABC

That’s the point where the GH powers-that-be let him in on just what he was about to take on. “They sent me a one sheet with John “Jagger” Kates in the description,” shared Adam. “It wasn’t until I went on YouTube and spent a good three or four days, watching all of Steve (Burton’s) storylines in the nineties (that I figured it out). By the way, they were fantastic. The production value … it was amazing the level of the acting, and the relationships you guys had. I really enjoyed it. So, that’s how I found out (about the character).”

Burton and Anderson asked Harrington about his thoughts on being a recast. “I thought it was important to go back to his circumstances and his upbringing, because that wouldn’t change no matter what he had become in the 20 or 30 or 70 years since we’ve seen him,” Adam shared. “I looked at what Antonio Sabato Jr. did and thought, ‘There was no way in hell I can even touch that or even come close, nor do I want to.’ The only thing I recognized was given his upbringing and what he’d gone through, it was a common sense of humor in there that’s either used defensively or as a way of getting through the world.”

As to how Adam should approach the part given it was a recast, he noted, “What I had been told from the brass is don’t worry about following that same emotional storyline. He’s gone away for a very, very, very long time, become successful and he’s come back. Basically, they were saying, you bring in you.”

Being part of the fabric of GH for awhile now, Harrington expressed, “I will say this about my experience so far. I am in absolute awe of the cast and the crew and watching how you do this on a train that refuses to stop. I said to a friend, ‘I’m on a train that’s going a hundred miles an hour, and they slow down to about 90 to kick you off after your scene is done.'”

So, what are your thoughts on Adam as John “Jagger” Cates after now seeing how the role has evolved and changed since its original version over 30 years ago? Comment below.
