Gregory Harrison Wraps His Run on General Hospital

Photo: ABC

Gregory Harrison, who has played Gregory Chase on General Hospital, has left the series.  As viewers saw, on the May 20th episode Gregory remembers his life, then seemingly went to asleep.

However, on today’s May 21st episode, is it revealed Gregory, who suffered from ALS, passed away in his sleep. Harrison brought with him extensive television and movie credits from Trapper John M.D., Falcon Crest and more before coming to GH.

Harrison joined the ABC daytime drama series in a recurring capacity back in November 2020 and signed a contract back in June of 2022.  A rep for the show confirmed to Soap Opera Digest that Gregory’s exit was storyline-dictated.

In story, Gregory Chase was the estranged father to Finn (Michael Easton), as they had a complicated past. He also had a younger  son Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard). Gregory was also the grandfather to Violet (Jophielle Love). One of his last wishes was to see Chase and Brook Lynn (Amanda Set tie the knot.

Over the past few months before the character’s demise, he became close with Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and Tracy (Jane Elliot).

The death of Gregory Chase will certainly rock Finn and Chase’s world.

So, sad to know Gregory Harrison has departed General Hospital? Comment below.

Bravo to Mr. Harrison for a job well done!
You will be missed

Finally a logical, real character with no crime background, not filled with violence and rage and they kill him off, far too early. Even with ALS there could easily been another year storyline. Maybe he should have gotten a third opinion regarding the hip replacement surgery no one knew he had… it was about the same time as Heather…

I am so sorry to hear this news. From what I saw, Gregory Harrison did an excellent with that character. I loved the interactions between him and his sons and with Alexis and Tracy. I’m sure Mr. Harrison will definitely be missed.

Gregory Harrison is a Class act and he will certainly be missed on General hospital…. I really hate to see him go.

I had high hopes they could have done something to reverse his medical condition. He really was a great character.

I wish they could have kept Gregory on the show!!!! He will be missed

this was so sad, they need to give us viewer a break from killing off characters from heartbreaking diseases, its just to much, I don’t want to tune in to GH to watch characters dying off from Alzheimer’s or ALS then hear whispers that Ryan might be resurrected from the dead after we all saw him get killed off, or have heathers horrible crimes explained away. oh and I almost forgot have Jason come back from the dead for the 100th time. Just put a freeze heartbreaking disease already at least for a couple of years.

Just like real life

Agree; soaps should be about escapism. GH never did these horrific back-to-back fatal diseases until Valentini and Van Etten. Way too much; one after another. Horrible. Let’s hope with the return of Van Etten this dark streak doesn’t continue. Utterly depressing.

Actually, in the 90s, GH had Maxie’s Kawasaki Syndrome followed by Stone’s AIDS diagnosis then Monica’s breast cancer. As great as all those stories were, the network apparently noticed the severity. Stories were circulating of a plan that Audrey was going to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but the network killed the storyline.

We do need medical storylines on GH, but not always dire diagnoses.

Don’t worry Ryan’s not leaving Hell ever again!

He will be missed

What a beautiful character to watch. He had such wonderful relationships with family and friends. He was a joy and will impossible to forget. We will all miss you

Very disappointed. His character was amazing. Disappointed in the writers.

It wasn’t the writers. He wanted to retire!!!

Gregory Harrison did such a great job at GH. He will be missed. Loved him since watching Trapper John MD.

Everything he has done is amazing and he needs to be recognized.

This totally caught me by surprise. Not the fact that Gregory died, this was always how the story was going to end the minute they gave him ALS, barring a storyline re-write. I just didn’t expect it now. I figured they had more story to tell. But I’m glad they did it this way, rather than make us watch Gregory continue to deteriorate for another year. And like he said, he completed his bucket list. He got to officiate his son’s wedding. It wasn’t gonna get any better than that.

They didn’t broach the subject in today’s episode, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out that he offed himself, rather than put himself and his family through more suffering.

Gregory Harrison is a great actor and a class act, I’m sorry to see him go. There was so much more potential with the character, exploring the relationships with Tracy and Alexis. But it wasn’t meant to be.

Brilliant and touching writing with the scene where Gregory’s life flashed before his eyes, including them apparently using real pictures from Gregory Harrison’s life. When I saw that, I knew he was a goner. And then Michael Easton brought it today when Finn discovered his dad’s body. I needed some tissues for that one.

Hate to lose the character, but they did a wonderful job with the scenes. One thing during Frank Valentini’s tenure, he knows how to bring the emotion and get the tears flowing with touching and poignant scenes when someone dies. Thinking of Edward Quartermaine, Oscar, and Mike specifically.

Sobbing since the wedding after Chase honored his father during his vows. I will miss Gregory Harrison on the show, what a wonderful job he did! I was so hoping the character was simply going to sleep I was not expecting the exit.

It’s such a shame that the character of Gregory Chase is gone. GH needed a leading patriarch who wasn’t a mob boss and could layer the show with senior gravitas. Gregory was a character with morals and compassion and wisdom; something sorely lacking in many of GH’s characters. He was a pillar character in so many ways. Loved his relationships with everyone with whom he had scenes. The ALS story was really something they just couldn’t make disappear without disrespecting all those who are fighting this in real life. But, man!, I’m going to miss both Gregorys.

Gregory did an outstanding job with the material his was provided. However, Mr Chase was not a legacy character. The true patriarch you seek is Ned. Younger than Gregory, but truly the anchor for the Q family.

I agree with you; Gregory Harrison was excellent in the role. The character Gregory was one of the few things the writers, past and present, got right. He was a good-looking man “of a certain age” which is missing from the show. At present, Tristan Rogers is the only actor/male character in his 70s and unfortunately, he’s barely on. I and others have been wondering if he’s well health-wise. Gregory was a great romantic lead for either Alexis or Tracy; he had great chemistry with both but the show eventually seemed to drop the Alexis/Gregory pairing and struck gold with Gregory/Tracy. They had such a warm, charming, relationship; each being just what the other needed. And you’re exactly right; he had morals, compassion, and wisdom. A totally refreshing character;a calm demeanor and a stable person in the midst of the many unhinged characters in Port Charles. The Chase family in general is a breath of fresh air; the two brother, Violet, Gregory. And what a great addition he would have been in the Quartermaine home; I could envision him and Tracy with the family as she went in for a snarky comment and he gave her a loving, “don’t say it,” look.

It’s truly a shame that the previous writers decided to write yet another devastating disease/loss story. Though it was beautifully done, it was hard to watch, depressing, and what did we gain? Nothing; we lost a great character. The show needs to lighten up; bring back family, romance, levity; they could have had it all with this character, instead they chose darkness again.

You said it wonderfully.

Thank you Carrie.

Wow, perfectly said! I wasn’t even a huge fan of the character at first. I wasn’t a non-fan, Ijust didn’t know what they were doing with him or why I cared. I loved the actor, however. He struck such a warm balance despite that. Then they really went somewhere with him and I became a fan. Everything from there is precisely a co-sign from me…

Thanks BringRobertBack (Scorpio?) I love Robert, too. I hope Tristan Rogers is well. He seemed rather frail the last few times he was on and that was a while ago…

Let’s hope the GH powers-that-be got the obsessive devastating disease- of-the-month out of their system.

Is the actor choosing to leave or was he told he was leaving? Big difference. I love the character, he’s done great.

I loved Gregory Harrison’s character. He was great to watch. Sad that he is leaving. Maybe he can have a twin brother.

?????

I’ll miss him and his interactions with his granddaughter!

VERY, VERY BAD AND STUPID MOVE GH!!!!!

The story should never have been written; I was in absolute shock that on the heels of most of us hoping Britt had been misdiagnosed (before she was killed off) they followed her story up with yet another devastating disease. I vowed not to watch it if the story followed and detailed the stages and his deterioration. Depressing, dark, dismal, one horrific disease story after another which I had hoped would end with the firing of the writers and that the new writing team would not continue. Now with Van Etten being back (a horrible decision) I fear he may bring his doom and gloom back with him.

The story though, a much as I HATED it, was excellently done. Gregory Harrison and Gregory Chase were actual perfection, and it is our loss and GH’s loss that they got rid of such an excellent actor and character. Unfortunately, there was no way after too much time had passed to change course.

I personally would love for them, in time, to cast Gregory Harrison in another role. And since this is the soap genre and anything goes, I’d love him to be not only a look-a-like twin or cousin, (as opposed to a story where it’s the same actor but in-story no one sees the same face) and I’d like him to have a similarly charming, warm, intelligent personality. Or, write a story whereby we find out Finn was in the hospital, had suffered delusions and this nightmare as his mind took him on a journey about his father, his guilt at having been estranged all these years, his worst fear that he’d lose his father….only to awaken and realize that all that had happened had been his worst fear playing out in his mind only. Have Finn in a good emotional place, Gregory back, a Wizard of Oz resolution where Finn, aka, Dorothy, wakes up and everyone’s “back home….”

Too much? I don’t care; I’d love to suspend my disbelief to have “Gregory” back. 😉

Didn’t want Gregory chase to leave great great actor should have gave him a raise on general hospital wonderful actor should have kept him on the show. If Brooklynn and Chase had a kid on the show now he can’t get to know the baby.life is cruel

You should bring him back

General Hospital Co-Stars Share Heartfelt Goodbyes to Michael Easton

Michael Easton is set to exit General Hospital on-air tomorrow on the Thursday, June 27th episode of the ABC soap opera. This comes on the heels of the actor’s videotaped announcement on Wednesday via his Instagram, where he revealed that he has wrapped his run as Dr. Hamilton Finn.

Since the time of the video’s posting, several of his GH co-stars have followed suit with comments on their time working with the popular actor, who has been with the show on and off since 2012, and in three different roles; John McBain, Silas Clay, and lastly, Finn.

Michael’s exit comes as Finn has fallen off the wagon, and is losing custody of his daughter, Violet due to his drinking. Previously, Finn found his father, Gregory had passed away in the middle of the night after battling ALS. The material has given Easton a chance to shine in memorable performances as he says goodbye to his time with GH.

Breaking News

Michael Easton Exits General Hospital

UPDATED: Early Wednesday morning, Michael Easton revealed that he has already taped his final scenes as Hamilton Finn on General Hospital.

The popular actor, who arrived at GH after his enduring run as John McBain on One Life to Live, took to his Instagram and announced his departure from the ABC daytime drama series, following weeks of rumors that he was out at the show. Reportedly, Easton’s final airdate is Thursday, June 27th and the video Easton posted was pre-taped awhile ago.

Standing outside the entrance to the set of General Hospital in what seems to be the wee hours of the morning, Easton shared the following message to his fans: “I’ve always been partial to the Irish Wish goodbye. That’s where you leave the party without actually telling anyone you’re gone. But I thought you all deserved better.”

Photo: MEastonIG

Easton then expressed, “So, I just wanna let you know, I just filmed my final scenes here at General Hospital. I’ve loved every minute that I’ve been here. I want to thank the entire cast and crew for allowing me to share their stage this past 10 years. Most importantly, I wanna thank all of you for the kindness and love you shown me and my family. I won’t ever forget you.”

In an emotional closing, Michael ended his video message, with, “As I walk out here for the last time, and with apologies to the great Lou Gehrig, I feel like the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” Ironically, the former New York Yankees baseball star in Easton’s reference, died of ALS (also known as “Lou Gehrig disease”), which was part of the storyline Michael recently played out on-screen with Finn’s dying father, Gregory, who had the same disease.

Photo: ABC

Michael punctuated his thoughts within the Instagram post with one final goodbye, “Thank you for your kindness. My heart is filled with love and gratitude.”

Currently in story, Finn has lost his sobriety after seven years, and is in the midst of a serious downfall after his father, Gregory passed away and his daughter, Violet (Jophielle Love) has been taken out of his home and has been served a restraining order to not come near her. How will Easton depart GH? Is Finn exiting the Port Charles canvas to get the help he needs?

Clearly, this marks the end of the line for Finn and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) as they just had it out over his drinking, and with yesterday’s announced return of Jonathan Jackson (Lucky) to GH this summer.

Photo: ABC

Easton’s GH journey started when he took Llanview’s McBain to Port Charles after One Life was canceled. He debuted on the long-running soap in March 13, 2012. However, due to the legal disputes with ownership of the characters from One Life to Live, between ABC and Prospect Park, he had to leave the series. Michael’s last episode as McBain was in March of 2013. Next, General Hospital brought him back as a new character, Silas Clay, in May of 2013. Two years later in 2015, Silas was killed-off.  Easton made one more GH run, this time as Dr. Hamilton Finn which he had been playing since the spring of 2016.

Throughout Easton’s time on General Hospital, he has earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Daytime Drama Series back in 2018.  Given his recent performances, many suspect that Michael might close his time on GH with another Emmy nomination in 2025.

You can watch Easton’s emotional goodbye below.

Jonathan Jackson Addresses Fans on His Return as GH’s Lucky: “Your Persistence and Love Has Certainly Played a Part in All of This”

Earlier on Tuesday, it was revealed that General Hospital’s five-time Daytime Emmy-winner, Jonathan Jackson is making a return to the ABC soap opera for the first time since 2015.

Jackson is now set to reprise his role as Luke (Tony Geary) and Laura’s (Genie Francis) son, Lucky Spencer.  Shortly after the soap world was abuzz at the news of his imminent arrival back in Port Charles, Jonathan took to his Instagram with his own personal message to his fans.

Jonathan started, “Hey everyone. I just wanted to let you know that I will be returning to General Hospital this summer as Lucky Spencer. Super excited and can’t wait to dig in and see what’s going on in Port Charles. Excited to see Genie Francis, obviously, and so many others.”

Photo: JPI

“Just wanted to say thank you to all of the fans over the years,” he continued. “Your persistence and love has certainly played a part in all of this. So I just wanted to say thank you. Also, to Frank Valentini (executive producer, General Hospital) and everybody at ABC for welcoming me back. Super excited. So, just sending much love, and I guess, I’ll be seeing you all fairly soon. God bless.”

Photo: JPI

The actor and musician’s video post was accompanied by the words, “excited for the journey” to continue, and so are we! Lucky was last seen in 2015 when Jackson returned to the soap to be a part of Tony Geary’s final storyline as Luke.  At the time of Lucky’s exit from the canvas he left things on good terms with Elizabeth and the children.

So, now the question is, h0w does Lucky arrive back in Port Charles this summer? Share your theories via the comment section below.
