NBC Orders Dramedy "This Is Us" To Series Featuring Y&R’s Justin Hartley!

It’s been a big news today for primetime shows getting network pick-ups for the new season or cancellation.   But there was great news for Justin Hartley (Adam Newman, The Young and the Restless)!  The Dan Fogelman untitled project in which he was cast as series regular, now has a name and has been ordered to series by NBC.

The new series is a dramedy now titled This Is Us.  It stars Mandy Moore (Red Band Society), Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes, Gilmore Girls) and Sterling K. Brown (The People Vs. OJ Simpson), along with Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Sullivan and Ron Cephas Jones  who round out the terrific cast.

The premise follows a unique ensemble whose paths cross and their life stories intertwine in curious ways.  Several of them share the same birthday, and so much more than anyone would expect.

Justin’s role in the pilot for the series was described as “Kevin”, a handsome and successful television actor with an underlining boredom in his ultimate bachelor life.

For Fogelman, the This Is Us pick-up was welcome news as both his other series Galavant and Grandfathered were canceled by ABC and Fox.  How the news of the network pick-up will effect Hartley’s availability on the number one soap opera remains to be seen.

So, what do you think of the news of Justin’s show going to series? Share your comments below!

As a fan of Justin Hartley, I couldn’t be happier for him.

As a fan of his Y&R Adam character, it sucks.

I feel the same way.

AGREE

THIS IS AWESOME!!! But he number 1 soap is General Hospital now

Not with the ratings it is not. The emmys for the most part was joke that still has many scrarching their heads. Tell me how a show that has remained 2.5m ahead of GH and the other bottom dweller DOOL is not a clear winner for best show.

ummm hmmm, because getting an emmy for best show is not about having the “highest rating” if that was the case, ncis would win the emmy in primetime.

Because some people are too lazy to turn the effing channel!

4ever DAYS……..YEP around 3 million viewers over DAYS are too lazy. I watch Days and it is a sinking ship. With the most recent script writer Salmons walking off yesterday the funeral should be soon.

Melissa Salmons quitting her script writing job at DAYS doesn’t indicate troubled waters ahead. All the soaps have several script writers. MS probably wrote three scripts per month. The script writers don’t write storylines. They only write dialogue.

No! I mean, I’m happy for Justin, but it makes me worry. We already lost two Adams, we can’t lose another one!

I had hoped that Justin Hartley would have been the revived McGiver..
He will do well.. he can’t stay with Y&R until he grows old like Eric and Peter..
He should grab every opportunity offered to him..

Omg

You are right su0000, he can always return to soaps later in life.

Justin had been killing it as Adam. If his NBC gig takes off ill be sorry to see him go. As a soap fan I’ll also be ready for another recast of an interesting and well written character.

I’m happy for Justin. I really hope he is able to do both shows because he is outstanding as Adam!!

I don’t want him to leave Y&R!!!!!

Could not have happen to a better man than him GOOD FOR HIM I DONT KNOW HOW ANY ONE IN THE BIZZ COULD TURN HIM DOWN THIS IS JUST HIS BEGInning on his way to the top. Now he will be missed if he leaves the number one day time show THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS! Either way he’s doing good

LOL giddy

“… I DONT KNOW HOW ANY ONE IN THE BIZZ COULD TURN HIM DOWN ”

bam ! ’nuff said

he’s beyond sexy

well said

The new show is filmed in New York City. Don’t see Hartley being able to maintain a front & center character on Y&R which is taped in LA.

Taped being the key word.

Happy for Justin hope the show is a hug success but but but what about YR I need to know???

I couldn’t be happier for him. He’s a hard worker and always brings his best to “Adam Newman”. His acting ability is unbelievable and I always thought he’d go farther. For him to settle in being Adam for the rest of his days would be to stifle his career as well as cheat himself out of something wonderful. My very selfish side wants to keep him as Adam Newman but if I we’re his mom I’d be saying “get out there & show them what you’ve got” GOOD LUCK Justin. Will soon see you on the big screen.

I love Michael Muhney BUT we all know that story, I think, so Y&R was lucky enough to find Justin Hartley. Once I saw how handsome and how good of an actor he was, it was only a matter of time before Primetime would reclaim him! Good for him, bad for Y&R! IF its not this new show, another will come along soon and sign this mega talent! THEN Y&R has a huge hole to fill again! They already have two strikes against them with the recasts of RED and BILLY!

I could not see anyone but Michael Muhney be Adam. And yes with Michelle Stanford and the best Billy ever Billy Miller gone, I boycotted the show. They were treated horribly by Y&R! I only tuned in for Justin. If he leaves I may stop watching again.

wait hang in there something will tun up ok with a show like Y&R YOU CANT GO WRONG

Oh you boycotted? Nobody of any importance noticed

I would never quit watching the show BUT it is getting tough to watch! Too many unrecognizable characters!

I agree Timmm!

Every time someone says they are going to quit watching the show their name shows up for every comment. It actually gets funny. Nobody is going to quit watching because an actor/actress leaves and that is why nobody takes it seriously. Timmm your so right. There are a lot of newbies but I think it’s because they work for less than the greats like Beth Maitland. Y & R had the highest fan base of any soap but if you read the comments and write down the names of the negative comments, check back over the week you’ll notice there just mean spirited people who enjoy putting the actors down but they’ll still tune in the next day. I’m sure the producers notice them.

Good luck to Justin, he was one of the few reasons to bother to watch Y&R lately.

It will be VERY tough to find a new Adam if this turns out to be the case. Jack was a great recast. Abby turned out well but generally speaking, you have to hit the lottery to find someone who looks like the original, has chemistry with those on screen and can act!

How wonderful Mr. Hartley is so in demand. Actors work long and hard to win any measure of success, and so few make it. Good for him!

As this is an NBC program, the show may not have long life. The Peacock has not been blessed with scripted ratings winners of this genre for some time. It sounds good though.

True, but this was the most In Demand pilot this season. Everyone wanted it. And to be honest, NBC has been doing the best this season in terms of holding on to shows outside of their comedy block which does need work. Also if this turns out to be the critical darling industry folks have made this out to be, that will work in its favor. As much as I love him as Adam, because it’s always been obvious that he has Primetime dreams, I also didn’t want him as Adam because the moment I knew I would love his portrayal, he would be out the door. But I truly do have high hopes for this dramedy. It’s prolly one of the best pilots I’ve seen.

A TV series has 10 – 13 episodes a season;

An 60 minute episode of Walking Dead takes about a week.
—–Supernatural takes 8 working days to film an episode.
—– A 30 minute sitcom will take 5 days to shoot, averaging 4-6 pages a day.

Just to give an idea how long Justin could be busy at NBC

as I’ve posted on the emmy nominations

he’s like the BEST of the Best newbie

has was on Passions for 5 years

this was way back in 2002-2006

moving forward to 2016. (from Wiki)

“…it was announced that Hartley would take over the role of Adam Newman on The Young and the Restless, succeeding Michael Muhney. Hartley first appeared on November 5, 2014 ”

call him the golden boy…. a beacon for daytime…

his work ethic is damn! “Thank You” for caring about what you do… and making Daytime FUN with – lots – of energies

Wowza

I will be looking for this dramedy

So happy for him! I’ve always thought he deserved a good primetime role since Passions. Hope this show will do well for NBC.

I am a huge fan. I have followed him from show to show. Passions, Emily Owens, Revenge, Mistresses…to Y&R. He is the only reason I returned to Y&R. No one could have taken over the role of Adam to me. Justin does an excellent job! So I wonder with this new project will leave Y&R?

Nothing but a pretty boy with a god awful haircut!!!! Nothing but a watered down version of Adam muscles and working out do not make you an actor!

WHAT???????? YOU MUST BE WATCHING THE WRONG SOAP.

But talent does and he’s had it since his debut on Passions gurlll I don’t know WHO you’ve been watching..

k, I dont know how old you are BUT a lot of women and some men wouldnt give a second look at Justin’s haircut! He is a talented, handsome man. Over at GH the have a couple MANikins who are handsome but cannot read a single line without falling all over the scene!

What a nasty mean person you are.

Nikki get a grip first of all the bad haircut was a sarcastic joke! Second they have watered down Adam he may be a great actor but all I have seen is shirtless scenes and mooning over Chelsea the dark side of Adam has not been shown. You need to lighten up I have no personal animosity towards JH I have just not seen any great dramatic moves maybe it is the writing but news flash I will always like Chris Engen the first Adam in the role.

HEY IM HAPPY TO THE FACT THAT I WORK WITH GUY HES GREAT no brags just facts

I had respected Justin Hartley’s work on Smallville before Y&R. As a huge Michael Muhney fan, I knew the Adam Newman character would change after he left. Muhney played the role as a sensitive, conflicted man with a lot of complexity & darkness. Hartley went for levity and lots of skin.

Being back the REAL Adam, Muhney! Let Justin have his prime time gig! Happy for him! Because if he stays at Y&R with schedule like that (Primetime) we will get less and less of ” Adam” he does ok but not quite the “real” Adam as ONLY Muhney can relay

Muhney can’t even get anything more than B movies…….puleeze

I’d love to see Michael Muhney on Y&R again. He’s the REAL Adam Newman.

I would also like to see Michael Muhney again. It was such a great Adam.

Maybe you can see Muhney’s new movie THE TRACK. It premiers in Hollywood at the Chinese Theater on June 12th.

Thanks Nicole…..it’s an Indie movie so won’t hit mainstream theatres. I shall look for it.

I would imagine that Y&R will try to work around his schedule– I am sure they already had discussions on how to make this work should the show get picked up. On soaps most stories are written well in advance of taping, so he could taped a number of episodes, have them in the bank so that could be inserted later — or write a story that would have Adam gone for a period of time to cover his absence.

Let face facts getting on the primetime schedule isn’t going automatically mean instant hit and depending on how many episodes of that show NBC orders and how many he is in of those, I think for time being, he isn’t going anyway. Yet if the prime time show takes off and if his character is front and center all the time, he might for his sanity have to say goodbye to his daytime gig, eventually, but it way too early in the game to go there.

Well it won’t be about YR, but more of NBC. This was the most In Demand pilot this season with a bidding war for it. Plus it’s an hour show, which that’s what will be the problem. I do Production Asst work occasionally on SVU and depending on the complexity of filming, the episode can take between 8-12 days. Plus this show will be filming in NY. Two different networks, two different coast, it will be brutal. Plus throw in table reads. For a fall premier, this will go into production at the end of Aug or early Sept. And after filming for 5-6 weeks there will be a mini break, and then filming will resume. Then in Nov, NBC will announce if they will pick up the back order which then filming will resume Dec/Jan for the rest of the 22 or 24 episode back order with small breaks in between filming. So unless he decides to work year round and give up life, it will be exhausting. A typical day on SVU is about 14hrs, and 10 on a easy day. This would be so much more logistical if it was the same Network like Victoria Rowell when she was pulling double duty on Diagnosis Murder & YR or the Summer actress who is recurring on Life In Pieces. But hey the show could get cancelled if no one watches, which would be sad since this pilot has gotten rave reviews.

I could be wrong, but I thought I had read somewhere that there could be a possibility of ‘This is Us’ being filmed in LA. Y&R does tape well in advance of ‘air time’ shows (I think it is like 4 weeks). I have heard before that actors do have scenes ‘in the bank’ for when they want time off. Also, primetime shows only shoot so many episodes to air. My hope is that this will work itself out and we can keep Justin on y&r as Adam. I personally, would not want to have to go through another Adam ‘recast.’. One other thing is that Justin does have a sweet daughter who I’m sure would love to have her dad in the same city as her lots.

I think your right Mary. Right now he’s been warned by Victor that he’ll be sorry and Nick just found Sage’s diary so it looks like old Vic got someone to plant something in it that could send Adam to jail. That could be his out for a little while.

Are there a lot of “dramedies” on television these days? There were some watched years ago that were really fun and interesting.

Wish him the best and think the role will be difficult to fill. Justin doesn’t stand out as one of the great actors to me but very talented. He carries a presence strong enough to have restructured the portrayal of Adam. That has been quite an accomplishment especially considering the many dedicated fans the previous fellow managed to cultivate.

For one, wish he would not leave. He contributed immensely to what did work for Young and the Restless. However, I very much look forward to watching him in another role and seeing if he can push Adam aside and become someone else.

Nothing but the best of wishes for his future.

I am happy for Justin, maybe he will do two shows ,actors have known to have done that before.I would watch both of them.He arrived just in time, a pun there.Seriously I love Justin always have ..Great actor and he is so gorgeous.

Maurice Benard Confirms Steve Burton is Upcoming Guest on ‘State of Mind’

Over this past weekend, General Hospital’s Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) revealed that he is finally going to have longtime co-star, Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) on his State of Mind You Tube series for a sit-down interview.

While speaking with Soap Opera Digest at Nancy Lee Grahn’s (Alexis, GH) ALS fundraiser, Maurice confirmed the taping is happening this week and should be posted in about three weeks time.

Benard shared, “I wanted Steve Burton and I’m shooting him Tuesday, my good friend, but he’s been through a lot and I’ve been asking for three years, but he’s finally going to do it.”

Photo: ABC

In addition, to the episode, it appears Maurice also confirmed he will be doing a You Tube live on Tuesday, May 7th as well at 3 pm PT possibly with Burton.

As GH viewers know, for year Jason was Sonny’s henchman, and his right hand. Now upon Jason’s return, the two are at complete odds, due in part to Sonny’s medication being completely manipulated by Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) and his growing paranoia.

As for what Burton will discuss, as Benard teased Steve has gone through a lot of personal ups and downs as well as professional, over the last three or more years, but has always landed on his feet. It will be interesting to hear this thoughts on those matters and how he soldiered through.

So, excited to see Maurice and Steve have a serious chat on State of Mind? Comment below.

Tom Selleck Continues to Think ‘CBS Will Come to Their Senses’ Following Cancellation of ‘Blue Bloods’

The Young and the Restless alum, Tom Selleck (ex-Jed Andrews), who has starred on CBS’ police procedural Blue Bloods for 14 seasons, is speaking out on the decision by the network to cancel the show.

During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning Selleck expressed his thoughts on if the show might get a last minute reprieve as Shemar Moore’s (ex-Malcolm, Y&R) S.W.A.T. has.

Tom shared,”I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses. We’re the third-highest scripted show in all of broadcast. We’re winning the night. All the cast wants to come back. And I can tell you this: we aren’t sliding off down a cliff. We’re doing good shows, and still holding our place. So, I don’t know. You tell me!”

Photo: CBS

Selleck has been with Blue Bloods since its inception and its premiere in 2010, in the role of Commissioner Frank Reagan.

Aware that the cast has asked CBS to reconsider its position, CBS Entertainment President, Amy Reisenbach said, “We love this cast, we love their passion for the show. All shows have to come to an end. It’s important to us to refresh the schedule. We are going to end the show come December.”

Blue Blood also stars Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, and Len Cariou. Selleck is pictured above with former Y&R stars, Deidre Hall (now Marlena, Days of our Lives) and Jaime Lyn Bauer (ex-Lorie).

Lidia Bastianich said, “It is a tremendous honor to be recognized and receive the Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award for having shared my passion for food with TV audiences for over 25 years. Cooking together and sharing food remain a common denominator of all cultures. Food nurtures, it connects diverse people, and it brings families, friends, and strangers together. There is no better place to be on this earth, especially in these trying times, than sharing food at a table with others. That simple idea has been the basis of my life’s work. Hence, as I say in my shows, “Tutti a Tavola a Mangiare!” Mille Grazie to NATAS for this honor.”

While Adam Sharp shared, “Lidia Bastianich’s astounding success combines her love of cooking while simultaneously entertaining millions each day. It is an honor for us to say ‘grazie’ for the many fine meals borne from her TV kitchen and cookbook pages.”

Melody Thomas Scott recently celebrated 45 years in the role of Nikki Newman, having joined the show in February 1979. Scott’s character has matured from the girl from the wrong side of the tracks to the serial’s luminous and resourceful leading lady.  After garnering a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in 1999, she went on to win in the same category for the Soap Opera Digest Award in 2001 and received four Soap Opera Update Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress (1992, 1993, 1995 and 1996). Scott began her career at age three. She studied singing, tap dancing, ballet and jazz and became one of the world-famous “Meglin Kiddies,” performing in USO shows as she started booking national commercials and guest spots on such series as “Wagon Train,” “My Three Sons,” “Ironside” and a recurring role on “The Waltons.”  Scott made her motion picture debut at age eight when she was cast by Alfred Hitchcock as the young Tippi Hedren in the thriller “Marnie.”  She has co-starred with legendary actors Clint Eastwood, Geraldine Page, John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. Scott has worked on stage and in numerous television shows and  was the subject of Lifetime Television’s “Intimate Portrait.” As a lifelong fan of “I Love Lucy,” Scott served as a founding member of the Board of Directors for the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center in Jamestown, N.Y., which is committed to preserving the legacy of the great comedienne. In 2020,

Scott released her memoir, “Always Young and Restless.” Married since 1985 to Edward J. Scott, the couple have three daughters and five grandchildren.
