AEW DYNAMITE: Sammy Guevera Gets a Little Help from MJF, Wardlow Takes Back the Belt, Adam Cole & Dr. Britt Baker Beatdown
On an excellent edition of Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite on TBS, the action was fast and furious as some storylines began to gel, while others left some fans perplexed.
The ‘Four Pillars’ of AEW began the show with Darby Allin, Jungle Boy Jack Perry (the late Luke Perry’s son) and Sammy Guevara hurling insults at one another. As of this point, all three guys were on target to wrestle the fourth pillar, MJF, for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view in Las Vegas at the end of May.
However, MJF revealed there will now be a tournament involving his three challengers, with the winner getting a shot at the title at the pay-per-view. Next, Darby Allin got the bye, leaving Guevara and Perry to have a match tonight on Dynamite. While many were hoping for a ‘legit’ match between Sammy and Jack, it was not to be. Backstage, Guevara took a monetary bribe from MJF with the guarantee that MJF would help set him up to wrestle him in the main event at Double or Nothing.
So, during the Dynamite main event and with the referee distracted, MJF came out of nowhere and popped Perry in the head with the Dynamite diamond ring and ran back into the crowd. The ref never saw the champ and thus Guevara got the cover and Perry was pinned 1-2-3. After the match, Guevara and MJF celebrated in the ring, which was very odd. So, where does this go from here? Next, Allin and Guevara will wrestle, but is this all just a ruse and it will go back to all four men in the ring for the championship come May? A bit of a head-scratcher.
Meanwhile, it was a big night for two of Pittsburgh’s favorites as the show was coming to viewers live from the ‘Steeler’ capital. First, Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D., who is a dentist by day and a wrestler at night, teamed up with AEW women’s champ, Jamie Hayter to take on The Outcasts, Ruby Soho and Toni Storm. However, with the The Outcasts leader Saraya at ringside, you could count on her interfering in the match. As much as she tried, Baker made Soho submit with the lockjaw.
Later in the night, things turned ugly for Baker, when her boyfriend, Adam Cole came to the ring for a face-to-face with Chris Jericho. When fists went flying, Cole was on the receiving end of more than Jericho as Daniel Garcia from the Jericho Appreciation Society doubled up on Cole’s beating. Then, they handcuffed Cole to the ring, while Baker ran out to make the save. However, she encountered The Outcasts where Saraya hit her with a kendo stick multiple times. While handcuffed, Cole apologized to his gal for everything that transpired. So, where does this go from here? A mixed-tag match at Double or Nothing? Jericho vs. Cole solo?
Wardlow, who trained in Pittsburgh on his rise to AEW, got some much-needed back-up for his match for the AEW TV Title vs. Powerhouse Hobbs. Enter Arn Anderson who was going to be at ringside in Wardlow’s corner, as there was unsettled business between Arn and QT Marshall. As it played out, Hobbs, who only held the title for 41 days, lost to Wardlow. This made Wardlow a three-time TV champ. Enter, Christian Cage and Luchasaurus at the end of the match. Looks like AEW is setting up the next feud between the two big guys, but what’s next for Hobbs?
In other key moments, Switchblade Jay White made his AEW singles match debut against Komander, in a match that featured high-flying maneuvers. The Elite and the Blackpool Combat Club went at each other with Don Callis and Konosuke Takeshita saving Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks. Look for an eight-man tag to develop out of this one at Double or Nothing.

AEW Honors Ted Turner with 10-Bell Salute
Ted Turner, the billionaire businessman, who turned a struggling Atlanta news station into a media empire with first 24-hour news channel, CNN, died on Wednesday, May 6 at the age of 87. Turner died reportedly ‘surrounded by his family.”
However, Turner’s impact is felt far and wide with how he revolutionized cable television as we know. One such way is how Turner believed in professional wrestling, when other network executives didn’t. Turner, who helped launch TNT and TBS, and purchased World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in the late 1980s and gave it a primetime slot.
Through his leadership, the landscape of pro wrestling was changed forever, leading to the infamous Monday Night Wars” between the WWE and WCW with their flagship shows, Monday Night Nitro vs. Monday Night Raw. Since 2019, wrestling has been back on TNT and TBS in a big way with AEW’s Dynamite and AEW Collision.

TED TURNER BELIEVED IN PRO WRESTLING
Last night, All Elite Wrestling opened its broadcast with a tribute to Turner, which led to the 10-bell salute, which is given to someone from the world of professional wrestling had passed on.
AEW commentator Tony Schiavone said at the top of the special three-hour Dynamite and Collision episode. “Ted Turner believed in pro wrestling. He believed in you, the fans, and he believed that pro wrestling belonged on national television.” Schiavone who was also a commentator for WCW noted that it was because of Turner’s vision that pro wrestling found a home on TBS and later in the 90s with TNT, sharing, “Generations of fans around the world knew that we were destination viewing.”
Schavione recalled, “I knew that firsthand. I began in the studio in TBS in 1985. Decades later, because of the foundation that was laid by Ted Turner, we still survive today through the leadership of Tony Khan in AEW, through the leadership of Warner Discovery, wrestling still survives.”
STING RECALLS TED TURNER STANDING UP TO EXECS
Suddenly, in a special appearance, pro wrestling and WCW legend, Sting, came to the ring and addressed the crowd in Charleston, South Carolina and at home. “Can you imagine having an all-in billionaire who absolutely loved pro wrestling? I can’t believe what (Turner) did for us. He was completely committed to us, devoted to us in every conceivable way.”
Sting went on to tell the story of how Turner stood up to the executives at CNN Towers. ‘We don’t know about this whole pro wrestling thing. I think it’s time to cut them off because we’re always in the red, Ted would share. “I’d look at all of them and say, you wrestlers just keep on doing what you’re doing because I got some deep pockets.’”
“There wouldn’t be a TNT title, there wouldn’t be a Sting. There wouldn’t be a Darby Allin. There wouldn’t be a Tony Schiavone here tonight. You wouldn’t be here tonight. So, thank you, once again, Ted,” Sting said as he concluded his comments. Moments later came the emotional ten-bell salute (you can watch it below)
Earlier on Wednesday, AEW president Tony Khan shared his own tribute on X, expressing, “It’s a very sad day in the world of television and certainly in the world of professional wrestling. The man who gave us this platform, the man who created TBS and TNT and so many great television channels and so many great concepts in the field of television, the late great Mr. Ted Turner has passed.”
So, what are your thoughts on the passing of Ted Turner? How without the billionaire’s love of pro wrestling, WCW and now AEW would not have had the platform they have to bring fans around the world the sports entertainment shows that they love? Comment below.
