AEW WrestleDream 2024: Jon Moxley Defeats and Retires Bryan Danielson for World Title as BCC Takeover Follows
The 2024 edition of the AEW WrestleDream pay-per-view from the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma Washington, delivered on many levels as one of the most entertaining and dramatic cards of the year. Top to bottom it was a stellar card, with obviously some more epic than others. However, the ending was not without controversy, confusion and some dismay by some fans and wrestling pundits alike of the AEW brand.
In the main event, Jon Moxley defeated Bryan Danielson for the AEW World Title and for all intent and purposes retired the ring legend, before the “American Dragon’s” home state crowd in Washington. Right off the bat, Moxley attacked Danielson and along with his henchwoman, Marina Shafir, kept the offense going while the referee’s back was turned during her outside the ring interference. Eventually, Shafir was caught red-handed by referee Bryce Remsburg and tossed from ringside.
Moxley trapped Danielson in a rear-chokehold, and Bryan passed out leaving the ref to call for the bell, in front of a packed and stunned arena. As it looked as though Moxley was going to start a beatdown of Danielson, Wheeler Yuta and Darby Allin came to the rescue form the back and down the ramp, only for Yuta to turn on Allin as the Blackpool Combat Club emerged doused Allin and duct taped him inside he ring, while Yuta put a plastic bag over Bryan’s head.

Next, Orange Cassidy tried to save the day, but he was tossed out of the ring. AEW announcer, Excalibur cried while calling the action as Danielson was loaded onto a stretcher in the ring and taken out. There was plenty of silence and a long ending with this segment that left plenty to be discussed. Is the BCC now the new NWO of AEW and the takeover will be announced on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite?
Former AEW World Heavyweight champ, Swerve Strickland made a return in his home state as well, where we got to the bottom of; would Swerve continue to have his manager be Prince Nana? All this, especially given Swerve lost his AEW title to Danielson, and then lost his cage grudge match with “Hangman” Adam Page? Leave it to the newly-arrived MVP and Shelton Benjamin to stir the pot. In the end, Swerve chose to stay with Nana and anew rivalry has been born for Benjamin vs. Strickland, et al with Bobby Lashley, we are sure, not far behind.

In the best match of AEW WrestleDream 2024, Will Ospreay tried to defend his AEW Continental Championship against Ricochet and Konosuke Takeshita in a three-way bout for the belt. With move after counter move, the high flying athleticism on display was off the charts. The first “this is awesome” chant came after Takeshita hit a DVD on Ospreay on the apron, followed by Ricochet hitting a Meteora on Takeshita.
While Ricochet and Ospreay often teamed up against Takeshita for his interference in their TV match the other week, and the fans booed them as it appeared even though he was the heel, they were rooting for Takeshita. After crashing through tables, and Ospreay delivering a second Hidden Blade on Takeshita, Don Callis, who was on commentary headed to the ring with screwdriver in hand. However, a hooded figure arrived revealing himself to be Will’s buddy, Kyle Fletcher, who took him out allowing Takeshita to win the belt. Fletcher now fully aligns himself with the Don Callis family.

In the non-wrestling spot of the night, following Jack Perry’s successful title defense for the AEW TNT Championship against Katsuyori Shibata , Daniel Garcia comes to the ring to let Perry know he is coming for him and that belt. However, Garcia is interrupted by the returning MJF. As the two face-off, Perry hits Garcia from behind and exits. MJF then steps on the throat of Garcia as he cuts his promo and says he found his Dynamite Diamond Ring, and as he is about to strike Daniel with it, Adam Cole runs to the ring (this time without tearing his ankle) and chases Max out of it. From the looks of it, in the re-set of this storyline, and feud, Cole is now the babyface and MJF will remain the heel.

Other matches included:
Jay White def. Hangman Adam Page
Mariah May def. Willow Nightingale to retain the AEW Women’s World Championship
Hologram def. Mortos in a two out of three falls match
Darby Allin def. Brody King
The Young Bucks def. Private Party to retain their AEW Tag Team Titles
Mark Briscoe def. Chris Jericho to retain the ROH World Championship

Overall, we give AEW WrestleDream an A- as it delivered on many fronts including better storytelling and fantastic wrestling. However, the ending of the main event and the overbooked nature of the show, brought it down slightly from what otherwise would have been an A+.

AEW Honors Ted Turner with 10-Bell Salute

Ted Turner, the billionaire businessman, who turned a struggling Atlanta news station into a media empire with first 24-hour news channel, CNN, died on Wednesday, May 6 at the age of 87. Turner died reportedly ‘surrounded by his family.”
However, Turner’s impact is felt far and wide with how he revolutionized cable television as we know. One such way is how Turner believed in professional wrestling, when other network executives didn’t. Turner, who helped launch TNT and TBS, and purchased World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in the late 1980s and gave it a primetime slot.
Through his leadership, the landscape of pro wrestling was changed forever, leading to the infamous Monday Night Wars” between the WWE and WCW with their flagship shows, Monday Night Nitro vs. Monday Night Raw. Since 2019, wrestling has been back on TNT and TBS in a big way with AEW’s Dynamite and AEW Collision.

TED TURNER BELIEVED IN PRO WRESTLING
Last night, All Elite Wrestling opened its broadcast with a tribute to Turner, which led to the 10-bell salute, which is given to someone from the world of professional wrestling had passed on.
AEW commentator Tony Schiavone said at the top of the special three-hour Dynamite and Collision episode. “Ted Turner believed in pro wrestling. He believed in you, the fans, and he believed that pro wrestling belonged on national television.” Schiavone who was also a commentator for WCW noted that it was because of Turner’s vision that pro wrestling found a home on TBS and later in the 90s with TNT, sharing, “Generations of fans around the world knew that we were destination viewing.”
Schavione recalled, “I knew that firsthand. I began in the studio in TBS in 1985. Decades later, because of the foundation that was laid by Ted Turner, we still survive today through the leadership of Tony Khan in AEW, through the leadership of Warner Discovery, wrestling still survives.”
STING RECALLS TED TURNER STANDING UP TO EXECS
Suddenly, in a special appearance, pro wrestling and WCW legend, Sting, came to the ring and addressed the crowd in Charleston, South Carolina and at home. “Can you imagine having an all-in billionaire who absolutely loved pro wrestling? I can’t believe what (Turner) did for us. He was completely committed to us, devoted to us in every conceivable way.”
Sting went on to tell the story of how Turner stood up to the executives at CNN Towers. ‘We don’t know about this whole pro wrestling thing. I think it’s time to cut them off because we’re always in the red, Ted would share. “I’d look at all of them and say, you wrestlers just keep on doing what you’re doing because I got some deep pockets.’”
“There wouldn’t be a TNT title, there wouldn’t be a Sting. There wouldn’t be a Darby Allin. There wouldn’t be a Tony Schiavone here tonight. You wouldn’t be here tonight. So, thank you, once again, Ted,” Sting said as he concluded his comments. Moments later came the emotional ten-bell salute (you can watch it below)
Earlier on Wednesday, AEW president Tony Khan shared his own tribute on X, expressing, “It’s a very sad day in the world of television and certainly in the world of professional wrestling. The man who gave us this platform, the man who created TBS and TNT and so many great television channels and so many great concepts in the field of television, the late great Mr. Ted Turner has passed.”
So, what are your thoughts on the passing of Ted Turner? How without the billionaire’s love of pro wrestling, WCW and now AEW would not have had the platform they have to bring fans around the world the sports entertainment shows that they love? Comment below.
