‘Beyond the Gates’ Clifton Davis Sings His ‘Jackson 5’ Hit, ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’ in Poignant Moment on Christmas Eve Episode
On today’s December 24 episode of Beyond the Gates, grab your hankies! We always knew that Clifton Davis one day would sing his the smash hit recorded by TheĀ Jackson 5, “Never Can Say Goodbye’ on the CBS soap opera, we just didn’t know when.
In fact, Davis even teased to Michael Fairman TV that something like this was coming when we caught up with the veteran actor/singer/songwriter at CBS Atlanta Fest a few months back.
But now, in story on Christmas Eve, and after just learning that his beloved wife, Anita Dupree (Tamara Tunie) was diagnosed with Triple-Negative breast cancer; a very aggressive and difficult to treat form of the disease more likely to occur in Black women, when Vernon takes to the piano at the Dupree family Christmas gathering, the song takes on new meaning. How could Vernon ever say “goodbye” to his wife, if she were to die?

Will it be revealed that after all the gossip of Vernon having an affair with Anita’s ‘Articulette’ singing sister, Sharon (thanks Leslie!), that the two were just conspiring to surprise Anita with the former senator’s serenade and Sharon (Bonita Brisker) was helping him pull it off? Stay tuned!
As many know, Davis penned the 1971 ‘Jackson 5’ hit and he told Billboard, āItās quite amazing to think I wrote this song way, way back, and now itās been written into the showās story plot. Itās exciting to be singing and sharing this song with another generation. Itās a song that just keeps on giving. Iām humbled as well because it didnāt have to turn out this way. God is good.ā
Never Can Say Goodbye was first released 54 years ago as the lead single for the groupās fifth studio album, Maybe Tomorrow, āNever Can Say Goodbye.” The song went No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks, and No. 1 on Billboardās Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Davis also earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B song. Among other artists who have covered the incredible tune are Isaac Hayes and Gloria Gaynor. Davis also wrote the hit title track for The Jackson 5ās 1972 sixth studio album, Lookinā Through the Windows.
Davis shared the inspiration for the song, which at its core is also amazingly touching, “It was a combination of two things: I was 23, 24 when I wrote the song. I was wrestling with my past, back when I was moving back and forth between my motherās home and my fatherās home. Whenever I left either of them, I cried because I was leaving one to go to the other. That always put a strain on my heart. Then later, I was in a relationship that was difficult to maintain. I wanted to say goodbye to her, but was unable to because of the love in my heart.ā
In addition, Clifton, who turned 80 this past October, told Billboard he has plans to release new music! “I released an album in 1990 calledĀ Say Amen.Ā But Iāve been writing all along ⦠songs about faith, prayer and angels, the Beyond the Gates patriarch explained. “Iāve got music that nobodyās heard. But weāre going to get it out very soon.ā Music to our ears!

A poignant moment for this soap, and I do love that Billboard reported this as well. I loved every single second of it!

The best soap opera Christmas celebration this year.
I was in tears hearing Veron singing that special song to Anita after her devastating news.
I love BTG. Beautiful cast and great storylines.ā¤ļø
Yes it was a Superior moment to see Vernon belt out his skills.
Great episode, along with Tuesdays.
Loved it. I was hoping he would sing this hit her wrote for the Jackson 5…sung by a little MJ. It’s timeless and deserves a Grammy even today.
Yes this is a fabulous cast and acting…cabrina green rising .love the backstory for Anita
You make me cry and laugh out loud at least once a week. Love you
Omg I loved hearing him sing one of my favorite songs brings back good memories.
I loved that episode. It was so poignant and brought joy to my heart to see Vernon serenade Anita, after secretly getting voice lessons from Sharon. I absolutely love Beyond the Gates
I Really Loved this Episode Yesterday on Christmas Eve! It was So Nice to See and Hear Clifton Davis sing His Song He wrote for The Jackson Five! This is a Great Show! I haven’t watched a Soap Opera in about 35 Years when As the World Turns went Off the Air! I Tune in Everyday to watch Beyond the Gates on CBS! If I Miss an Episode or I want to watch an Episode again I go to Paramount Plus! Thank You for Airing This Amazing Show! Love It!
I really loved this episode! I am so glad Dani and Nicole did not say anything to their mother Anita before hearing the truth! And I canāt wait until Haley is caught!!!
Loved this episode and Tuesday’sā¤ļø BTG touches on so many topics. Love the love Anita and Veron have. Please don’t ever change their storyline. Thank you Clifton Davis for taking me down memory lane!! It was a great episode.
I enjoyed the song KUDOS
I loved it
I just absolutely love this show and the cast, they are amazing. No matter what I’m doing or how my day going,I make sure I catch beyond the Gates weekdays. Keep it up!
A beautiful moment indeed! Clifton Davis is a gem.
I love this song and another reason to always look at the writing credits.
Yes, Clifton Davis or Vernon is the type of husband everyone desires to have, so genuinely caring and loving!
This was by far one of BTG’s best episodes this year. We still have a couple of episodes left to watch in 2025 before we officially say farewell to the year that was.
I loved every minute of this episode. Thank you BTG!!
What a Wonderful Christmas Episode. Thanks writers for portraying that not all Black Men cheat on their wives.
That alone should put him up for a Daytime Emmy. I’ve enjoyed his work since the 70’s with the comedy show ‘That’s My Mama’ . Still a great talent! Well done
This episode truly touched my heart. Just listening to the lyrics of I Never Can Say Goodbye, took on a profound meaning for me. Life is precious and way too short. God used Clifton Davis in a miraculous way to pen the song and to present it to the world.
I am wondering if Clifton received a royalty check when he sings a song he wrote?
Absolutely Beautiful the chemistry of these 2 is wonderful! They work is so effortless.
Love Sharon superior actress.
My favorite girl kat if am watching and I don’t see kat i don’t feel good she really bring out the show next bill wife must get caught for all those poison what she is putting in his tea
I love Beyond The Gates. It is by far the best show on TV! The cast are amazing and beautiful. The writers and the storyline are outstanding. Please let Ted and Cherise fall madly in love peacefully; they deserve it. Can’t wait to see what karma has in store for Haley and Leslie (Dana). The Christmas episode truly touched my heart. Thank you for creating such a dynamic show that exhibits black excellence in a world that has forgotten the truth and the importance of love. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
When I first heard that my favorite TV station was getting a new soap called beyond the gates I could hardly wait, especially knowing that the cast was based around an African American prominent family, the storyline has never failed my expectations, I try not to ever miss it and if I do I can just about know what went on from where the next day pick up, next to my favorite that I grew up watching from day 1 which is The Y&R it rates #2. I could basically have wrote the script for both, that’s just how in tune I am.
They should have Kat and Tomas get closer and have a lasting relationship like Anita and Vernon that interesting and they can show the struggles they have in getting there but also the strength they gain
Loved everything! Although I loved the Jackson 5 versionā¦.. MY version of Never Can Say Goodbye was by Miss Gloria Gaynor! That version kicked ass on the dance floor !
I was in ninth grade in 1974-1975 and I was a huge Days fan due to my Mama!
Did not know he wrote much less he is 80 my goodness Such a treat

Next, Noah comes to Garland Memorial Hospital looking for his dad, and runs into Nicole (Daphnee Duplaix), who knew exactly who he was and brings him to see Kial, who is surprised to see his son in town.
Noah needs money and Kial won’t pay it, unless he takes a job to pay for music career right here in the DC/Maryland area.Ā Kial tells his son, Atlanta and New York City aren’t that far away if he gets a gig. Greg concluded: āThank you to everyone whoās been part of my journey. Family. Friends. Fans. Colleagues. Your encouragement has meant more than you know. Hereās to the next chapter.”
Friends and colleagues jumped into Vaughan’s comment thread including: Robert Christopher Riley who plays Carlton on Beyond the Gates who shared, “Love and miss ya buddy,” fueling speculation that Vaughan is no longer on the CBS soap.

‘Beyond the Gates’ Karla Mosley and B&B’s Lawrence Saint-Victor Share Their Thoughts on Being First-Time Daytime Emmy Nominees Together (Exclusive)

When it was announced last Monday and Tuesday that longtime friends, scene partners and creative collaborators, Karla Mosley (Dani, Beyond the Gates)Ā and Lawrence Saint-Victor (Carter, The Bold and the Beautiful)Ā became first-time Daytime Emmy nominees, they could not have been happier for each other as their connection continues to remain so strong to this day. They have literally gone though their daytime journeys together in so many ways.
As longtime daytime viewers know, Karla and Lawrence first appeared on Guiding Light as Christina and Remy Boudreau. They remained with the beloved CBS soap opera, as it went off the air until its final episode in 2009.
Next, both Karla and Lawrence wound up being cast on The Bold and the Beautiful, she as Maya Avant and he as Carter Walton. At one point, the character’s dated each other, and even became engaged. Later, it was revealed that Maya was a trans woman who was truly in love with Rick Forrester (then played by Jacob Young). Along the way, Karla and Lawrence collaborated on a web series called Wed-Locked, which explored the modern-day realities of being newlyweds. It was conceived in 2009, while they were wrapping upĀ Guiding Light and revived in 2018.

Now, here we are in 2026. Karla is one of the stars of CBS’ groundbreaking soap opera, Beyond the Gates, where she received her first Lead Actress nomination for her portrayal of Dani Dupree. Lawrence remains on The Bold and the Beautiful, but get this! He received not only his first nomination for acting and in the Supporting Actor category, but a second for Outstanding Writing Team, since Saint-Victor holds double duty with the CBS soap as a writer and a performer.
During the Michael Fairman Channel’s annual Daytime Emmy Nominations Special, Lawrence and Karla closed the show where they were able to speak to each other on the livestream broadcast, and share their feelings on being nominated together in a very special moment. They also let us know what was on their Emmy-nominated reels that landed them this very special recognition for the first time in their veteran soap opera careers.
KARLA AND LAWRENCE WERE OVERJOYED FOR EACH OTHERĀ
Lawrence explained, “Karla and I spoke earlier and we were talking about the synergy we have had throughout the years. Our kids were born in the same week, and so many other things where it’s like we are just so aligned – and so to find out that we’re both first-time nominees in this together … it kind of makes sense when you look at our lives together.”
“I’m so proud of Karla. I’ve always been proud of Karla, but her work on Beyond the Gates, and the responsibility that was given to her to take this world that no one knows about and showcase it, and make it with so much nuance and depth and flare and swag and all this stuff she brings to Dani is fantastic! I’m proud of your show…. 15 nominations.”
Karla replied, “I’m going to sing Lawrence’s praises and say that he has been working for so many years and so hard, and writing and just showing up and being whatever anyone needed him to be, and doing it with excellence every single time. The fact that you’re finally being acknowledged in this way is overdue. I’m overjoyed. Tony (Anthony Pascarelli) who directs both The Bold and the Beautiful and Beyond the Gates came on set. I was doing this emotional scene, and we were in between scenes and he goes, ‘Lawrence! Lawrence!’ He goes, ‘Oops. I shouldn’t have told you that now!’ And I go, ‘No, no. I have to know! That’s my brother!’ It was perfect.”
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCENES FOR YOUR EMMY REEL
It’s always a tough call when actors submit their work for Emmy contention. How do you chose a reel that will capture the voters right away? Do you tell an arc of a story in highlighted scenes, or do you put together a sequence of scenes that may be somewhat unrelated but show your depth as a performer?Ā Clearly, Karla and Lawrence chose right! Here’s how they went about assembling the scenes for their reels.

Photo: CBS
Karla: “I thought, I’m just going to put together something that’s fun for me. I ended up starting with the golf club moment in that blue suit, and then cut to: the gun shot scene at the wedding where she’s holding Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) and Hayley (Marquita Goings) up. Then, we go back to a scene after she comes in with the golf club. So, we really kind of get the Bill/Dani dynamic and what’s going on there. And then, we go to one of my favorite scenes from last year where Ashley’s (Jen Jacob) in the bathroom and Dani’s talking to Andre (Sean Freeman) at Uptown. It’s comedic. It’s Dani at her best wit and banter. Then, we get the scene with Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) where she comes out, and tells her mom that she’s bisexual, which is one of the great moments, because in real life I was coming out at the same time.”
In addition, Mosley continued,”Then another Bill/Dani scene where she’s saying she moved on and here’s why, and here’s why I don’t want to be with you anymore. In the scenes, she really has found her strength, and before that I put in the mugshot photo shoot. The photo shoot was a last minute addition, I woke up inspired by it and had to include it!”

LAWRENCE SAINT-VICTOR’S PICKED BREAK-UP SCENES WITH HOPE
Lawrence shared, “The heart of Carter is always about trying to be in love and fall in love. So, I used the Hope (Annika Noelle) breakup scenes and it’s what led my reel, because at the end of the day, everything he does is for love, and for me, the climax of his story is it still didn’t work. We had two breakup scenes. One was a pre-breakup scene, and then Carter got her back. The next one is when he tells her to ‘Go be with Liam. Go be with your family.’ Then, I also had a scene Carter and Daphne (Murielle Hilaire), where he’s just kind of down and out about losing Hope the first time.”
You can check out the segment where Karla and Lawrence meet up on the Daytime Emmy Nomination Special video below at the 2:56:00 mark.
The 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be held on October 30 from the Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood California and streamed at watch.theemmys.tv and associated apps.
So, what do you think of Karla and Lawrence scoring their first-ever Daytime Emmy nominations in the same year? What do you think about the scenes they put on their nominated reels? Have you watched them since their days on Guiding Light together? Let us know via the comment section below.
