‘Beyond the Gates’ Writers Give Callback to Tamara Tunie’s Time as Jessica Griffin on ‘As the World Turns’
Soap opera fans love when writers give a little ‘wink-wink’ to the audience on their favorite daytime dramas. Such was the case on yesterday’s Thursday, May 22nd episode of Beyond the Gates.
In the scene, the homeless woman named “June” (Jasmine Burke) who is currently recovering from her bout of pneumonia, and who is being helped by Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) and Jacob (Jibre Hordges), is in the hospital corridor in a wheelchair when she meets Nicole (Daphnee Duplaix). June learns that Nicole is psychiatrist. June doesn’t understand, or says she doesn’t understand, why she needs to talk to a therapist, when as she says, I’m here, “for my lungs, not my beans.”
Nicole says “June” is unusual name as not many people are named that anymore, and that’s when June launches into a story that her maiden name is Jessica Griffin and that her husband left her. As she continues her past history with her husband, and how his ex-wife turned up alive after being presumed dead and let her, Nicole realizes she is being duped and that June is just spewing back the history of Jessica (Tamara Tunie) and Duncan’s (Michael Swan) romance, and the presumed dead Shannon (Margaret Reed) from As the World Turns.

The moment was a callback to Beyond the Gates star, Tamara Tunie’s (Anita Dupree) time on ATWT as lawyer Jessica Griffin. Tunie played the part from 1986 – 1995 and again 2000 – 2007.
The Thursday, May 22nd episode was credited to head writer, Michele Val Jean, co-head-writer, Bob Guza Jr., breakdown writer, Teresa Zimmerman and script writer, Judy Tate.
The question is who is “June” really? How will she be wind up being connected to the Richardson or Dupree families, or will she end up being related to someone else?

Since Beyond the Gates debuted back on February 24 of this year, the writers have often given little Easter eggs to fans within the episodes, and this one was a quick nod to their series matriarch, Tamara Tunie, and in fact, “ATWT” was trending on X on Thursday thanks to this!
So, what did you think of the scenes between June and Nicole when Jessica Griffin and ‘As the World Turns’ was brought up on an episode of Beyond the Gates? Did you get a kick out of it? Comment below.
Love the nod to Tamara’s time in world turns Boy those were the days! She is going to end up related to someone for sure !
I think it was a cheeky, nice nod to As the World Turns. I’m just hoping it doesn’t become a recurring theme.
bring back the world turns on and on theme song and dan region.
Loved this! Especially remarking Nicole saying her mom looked like Jessica!
That was my favorite part too. I played it back several times.
This was cheeky and fun. I caught on as soon as June said her name was Jessica Griffin. I just laughed my ass off. Thank you writers!!
I remember watching Tamara on As the World Turns many years ago.
I believe the two children in the pic June holds dear would be Samantha and Tyrell!!!

As previously reported, kicking off today, is a two-part Beyond the Gates, when The Duprees gather to celebrate Banneker University’s homecoming weekend.

BANNEKER REFLECTS THE IMPORTANCE OF HBCUS
Sheila Duckworth, (executive producer, Beyond the Gates) spoke to Soaps.com to give some insight on the decision for the series to illustrate the ties that bind with HBCUs.
“It was important that we have this school as almost a character on our canvas, right from the beginning. Beyond even education, HBCUs have been pivotal when it comes to everything from economic progression and fostering a sense of community to the development of leadership skills,” explained Ducksworth. “From the beginning, we wanted to illustrate that what the Duprees are able to do in the world was a direct reflection of the impact HBCU’s have in real life.”
EVERYTHING HAS ITS PURPOSE
The EP talked about how purposeful the elements that integrate Banneker into the overall story of Beyond the Gates are including: the Dupree family door knocker that is a lion, the mascot for the fictional university, plus, the upcoming fight song that the cast will sing together on the Monday, October 5 episode, and the painting the hangs at Fairmont Crest.
That portrait of Vernon Dupree’s (Clifton Davis) father, George Cheeks Dupree, that hangs prominently at the country club, was named after CBS executive George Cheeks (now Chairman of TV and Media, Paramount), and as Ducksworth says of the legacy of Vernon’s father, “He was the architect of Fairmont Crest.”
So, are you looking forward to these episodes honoring HBCU traditions with the Dupree and the Richardson clans? What surprises do you think might be in store come next week? Let us know via the comment section below.
