UPDATE: Chappell tweets and feelers were sent to "Y&R"!

crystalchappel.jpgThe amazing Crystal Chappell stunned the soap world late yesterday with the announcement she is returning to the soap role that made her famous on Days of our Lives! How exciting is this…she is returning as Dr. Carly Manning AKA Katrina Von Leushner! The stunning and hottest soap news in years was released in a brand new interview with TV Guide Magazine. In it, the Daytime Emmy Award winner, who is currently part of daytime’s favorite romance, the Otalia pairing on the cancelled Guiding Light, talks about her decision to land at DAYS starting in September with her first air dates to be in October.  This news means that it’s the end of the line and run for Otalia on Guiding Light, especially since the show is ending its CBS run in September, and Crystal’s decision obviously squelches any thoughts to bringing the couple to another online or television platform. Here are a few excerpts from the astounding interview with La Chappell!

This is hot, head-exploding news — it’s shocking and crazy and terrific! Who imagined this would be your next career move!
“Not me! I sure didn’t expect this at all but it’s very exciting. I was in L.A. a couple of weeks ago and had some meetings set up to discuss the future. [Days exec producer] Gary Tomlin called and asked if I’d be interested in coming back. We had lunch and, a week or so later, we had a deal. My kids have been asking me for a year, “When are we gonna move back to California?” So they’re very excited. It’s the show where their mommy and daddy met.” [Chappell is married to Michael Sabatino, who played Carly’s husband, Lawrence Alamain.]

If there’s no future for GL — and at this point it doesn’t look good — the Otalia fans are going to have mixed feelings about this. Sure, they’ll be able to follow you to Days but I think a lot of them were hoping — hell, so was I — that you two might move over to As The World Turns. Your story brought a lot of new, non-soap viewers to GL, and there’s big value there. Hell, there oughta be a GL spinoff based around Otalia and really give the people what they want — it could be called The G-L Word. Admit it, it’s not a bad idea.
“It’s not a bad idea at all. I would gladly have done it. It was definitely something we were rallying for. I mentioned it to all the right people. But it was somebody else’s decision. It’s out of my hands. Otalia has certainly had too short of a life. I so love this storyline. In fact, I’m creating a Web series that has a similar energy to it — different from Otalia but similar. I believe there’s another kind of story to be told in this arena. People are ready and OK — well, for the most part — with watching a woman be who she is, and fall in love with another woman. I’ve gotten so much response from fans all over the world who are grateful that GL has told this story, because they haven’t seen it before with two women. Two men maybe, but not two women. I think we showed that there’s a real niche, a real market for this sort of thing. Clearly, the time has come.”

On-Air On-Soaps, will have more reactions on this tomorrow and in the coming days!  Welcome back to LA Crystal and to Salem!

Now it’s the end of the line for Charlie on Days of our Lives, his portrayer Mike Manning took to his Instagram for some parting words of his time in Salem playing this very bad dude.

As Days fans know, many people wanted Charlie dead, and now he is! Thus begins a good old fashioned soap murder mystery on the long-running NBC soap opera, the question now is, who ultimately did the deed?

DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Cady McClain Ends Her Great Run as Jennifer; But Not Before A ‘Wink-Wink’ Nudge-Nudge’ to AMC’s Dixie ‘Poison Pancake’ Debacle

Wednesday’s episode featured another solid performance by two-time Daytime Emmy-winner, Cady McClain as Jennifer Horton Devereux as it was the day of her mother, Laura’s (Jaime Lyn Bauer) funeral.

Last week, longtime viewers were saddened that the character of Dr. Laura Horton was killed-off.  The question remains did she fall accidentally and hit her head in a struggle with Gwen (Emily O’Brien), or did Gwen intentionally kill Laura?

Yesterday was also the final episode of McClain in the role of Jennifer – as far as know for now.   In story, following Laura’s funeral, Jennifer was heading to Boston to be with her brother Mike, to settle their mother’s estate and go through her belongings, etc.

Cady had taken over the role of Jennifer from Melissa Reeves, who chose to stay in Nashville during the Covid-19 pandemic.  As part of her departure, head writer, Ron Carlivati and the writing team, delivered a little wink-wink nudge-nudge to soap viewers and those of McClain’s time as Dixie Cooney Martin on All My Children.

In one of the most controversial soap death scenes of all-time, and one that was not kind to McClain, Dixie was killed-off the ABC daytime drama series after eating poison peanut butter pancakes. Fast-forward to 2021, and in an attempt to make DAYS Jennifer feel better, Julie (Susan Seaforth Hayes) whips up some banana pancakes with extra peanut butter!  When Jennifer declines them, Julie says she thought she liked them, to which Jennifer replied, “I used to.  But I had a bad experience with them once.  Now I can’t even look at them.”  Julie questions, “Bad experience?”  Then Jennifer says, “I’d rather not talk about it.”

In our books, McClain got the last laugh here getting to do a nod to the audience, who has followed her soap career for decades including the the 2007 killing of Dixie … by pancakes.

Previously, Cady shared in a 2020 interview with EW.com about the subject: “It was a dig at me by one of the writers that very much wanted to put me in my place. I had stepped out of line and they wanted to put me back in line, and I was going to eat those pancakes and I was going to learn my lesson, and I certainly did.”

So, what did you think of the mention of the ‘pancakes”? Will you miss Cady as Jennifer? Comment below.
