The biggest surprise at last night’s 40th annual Daytime Emmys cameĀ  when Erika Slezak (Viki) of One Life to Live read the name of the winner of Outstanding Drama Series live on the telecast on HLN!

However, the ones surprised and over-joyed the most were the cast and producers of NBC’s Days of our Lives who heard their name called for the first time in 38 yearsĀ  in the top category! Executive producer Ken Corday shared that this win comes on his birthday, and was on-stage along with with co-executive producers Greg Meng and Lisa De Cazotte.

Steve Kent, Senior Executive Vice President, Programming offered his congratulations on Monday: ā€œWe are thrilled that Days of our Lives has won Outstanding Drama Series.Ā  Thank you to the great cast and crew, writers, producers and directors that bring these stories to life everyday for the viewers and thank you also to NBC for their continued support. Our daytime dramas both have bright futures ahead of them and we look forward to their continued success.ā€

DAYS had been on a ratings upswing of late coming off of a terrific May Sweeps of storytelling!Ā  We hear today there was a very special toast and private celebration for the cast on-set of the NBC soap as well!

So what do you think soap fans?Ā  Were you surprised that DAYS won Outstanding Drama Series? Are you thrilled that after 38 years the show won its second Emmy? Watch their winning moment below and then share your thoughts!

Since OLTL didn’t get it, Im glad that DAYS did…..I’m not a viewer of that show, but I’m just so glad that the overrated B&B or Y&R didn’t take home the big prize.

I was surprised but very happy but was kinda hoping OLTL would win.

I was so glad when Days won! I was a viewer who came back recently, for the Ejami and most importantly the WilSon storyline. The show now feels relevant and fresh and I hope they can keep up the great work!

So glad Days finally won long time coming, tired of Y&R & B&B always winning.Good for the whole gang from Days let’s do it again next year.

You said it perfectly…. The cast and producers in attendance were so surprised… it was joyful and emotional.

Salem’ites! I love that… yeah, it would seem like forever… DAYS WINS BIG!

Collectively… The solid cast are all delivering. yeah, that includes easily overlooking the Dan/Jenn debacle.

Who knows…. with how well DAYS is doing THIS YEAR… Hmmm… could their be a repeat next year?

I love my DAYS.

Surprised since I’ve felt for years that Days never seemed to get any respect. But I’m thrilled for Ken and everyone involved with the show! I hope we don’t have to wait another 38 years, though!!

Ditto.

have to echo the sentiment.

“…for years DAYS never seemed to get any Respect.”

Well now that there are only 4 shows left on network television the odds have gone up that they will win more often.

Depends if AMC and oltl are qualified next year.

Congrats to Days of our lives! POP open the champagne and spray it all around because you now have an #Emmy for the Best Soap in Town!!!! I’m so proud to e a #Days Fan!!!

Here, Here!

I’m Proud with YOU.

I am very proud and happy as someone who’s been watching since the 70’s. Well done, Chandler Massey, as well. I’m only disappointed that Peggy McCay didn’t win. I am still hoping for the day that Ariane Zucker and Allison Sweeney win one day. Same goes for Eileen Davidson! Well done, troops!

You have to be happy for them! But I really think others deserved it more this year! I watched Dool all this year along with the others and it was not the best. I am actually happy to see it not go to B&B… but truly disappointed it did not go to OLTL or GH!!! Both had great episodes while they were on!!!

I was very happy for Days of our Lives. The actors work very hard on this show and deserved some recognition! Very excited for them!

Surprised because Days hasn’t seen much love from the Emmys for a long time. But very happy because the show is good, better than others that are on air and number 1, and they have great actors.

My first thought when hearing their name announced: “FINALLY! Someone is paying attention!!!!”

I always like it when people who didn’t expect to win, win, because you can’t help but believe it means more to them than to the ones that thought they were a shoe in. The Emmy show began with Doug Davidson winning Lead Actor, which was a delightful surprise and ended with Days winning Outstanding Drama- another unexpected win- so the night ended great. However everything in between was typical for the Emmys.

I never would have come to DAYS had it not been for the cancellations of ATWT, OLTL, and AMC. I never watched NBC soaps. I gave DAYS a chance at the reboot and have been pleased. I sometimes remain confused at all the family ties, but the plots seem more genuine than the over-the-top years of satanic posession and mystery islands. I think the family- and community-centric plots have resonance, as do — from what I follow here — a renewed sense of history. There are very talented — and attractive! — actors to watch, and I am please DAYS has one in the win column.

I did the same thing after AMC went off, and I love Days. So glad I have my daily soap fix again. And of course I have my AMC back too, so I have now two that I love.

i’m not a fan of the show, but still happy for them, they were all so genuinely happy that you couldn’t help but be happy for them..

I was surprised and stunned but was very happy for DAYS!
Congrats DAYS!

I hoped that OLTL would win, but I am delighted that DOOL won over the other nominees!

Like others I only started watching DOOL after other soaps were canceled, but have really enjoyed it this past year, and think they deserve this recognition. A.Zucker deserved to win as well… maybe next year!

So deserve and over-due! DAYS has been fantastic this past year and I’m finally happy their success and amazing talents have been recognized by the academy. Let’s hope we win again next year!

Having picked up DAYS again this last fall, I was worried for a bit, but these last few months have been spectacular-great work by everyone involved

I was hoping OLTL would win, but it was nice to see Days win, especially with them being on fire these days. They should win the Emmy next year for this year’s scenes!

And man, the girl that plays Abigail looked so hot with her Madonna/I Dream of Jeannie hair and that hot dress!

The sands of time have been falling slowly but surely, building to one
fever pitch after another. Keep your eyes on the hourglass and never
let the sands stop falling. It was great to win the emmys, but I already
knew it did not matter, for all the days of our lives are better with this
very exciting beautiful soap opera.

OH WHOA , I am so happy DAYS of OUR LIVES won . THey did really good this past year and this yea too . hopefully more of them like NICOLE , ABBEY , EJ , Caroline and some more .
Hope there will be more next year . WILL , and CHAD I am gonna miss you both on the show . hope u both will come back . WISH u both the best of luck in your new careers in the future . hope u both com back again like they did wit STEAFNO ,, John and Marlena
I hope Nicole will be with BRADY they both are great couple. KEEP UP THE GREAT SHOW DAYS OF OUR LIVES šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚
