DAYS Rob Scott Wilson Dishes On "Killer Ben", The Reveal & The Opportunity Of A Soap Lifetime!

Courtesy/NBC

In the killer of all reveals, last week Days of our Lives in a did-not-see-that-coming moment – let it be known to viewers that none other than Ben Weston is the Necktie Killer!  The once charming good guy has now quickly become quite creepy.  And as any DAYS fans know, nobody does serial killer storylines like the NBC soap, which is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary come November.

Relishing the twist is actor Rob Scott Wilson, who gets to play the disturbed young man so deeply in love with Abigail (Kate Mansi), and betrayed by her at the same time, that he wants his rival Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn) out of the picture by any means necessary.  For Ben, that is framing the guy for the murders of: Serena Mason (Melissa Archer), Paige Larson (True O’Brien), and the attempted murder of Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall).  But there is much more to the story to come, and as DAYS promised the rest of Salem will learn the identify of the killer come the series anniversary week.

On-Air On-Soaps spoke to Rob to talk about the character turn, and how he was able to keep it a secret from his cast mates, and just how large the Salem body count will be! Wilson also gives some insight into: what’s driving Ben to commit murder, the key moments in the reveal scenes, previews what to come, and the terrific opportunity that has been afforded him by the DAYS brass to show the darker side of his acting chops.  From his first big break as first male model on The Price is Right, to playing Pete Cortlandt on the online reboot of All My Children, “Killer Ben” is definitely a departure for Rob.  However, he is more than up for the challenge of making this now very troubled bad boy, one role that soap fans will not soon forget!

So, Serena and Paige’s murders had occurred, and you did not know at that time that Ben was going to turn out to be the necktie serial killer?

Courtesy/NBC

ROB:  Right.  I didn’t know about that, but it opened up an awesome opportunity.  I got exactly what I overall wanted – not in the form of killing pretty girls (laughs), but just in terms of this storyline.  I have so much great stuff coming up, and it has been a blast.

Let’s talk about the big reveal scene that aired last week on Thursday’s episode of DAYS.  Ben takes out a blue plastic container and in it are neckties … and what was in the plastic bag  …  flower petals?

ROB:  That he was smelling?  That was a big bag of weed! (Laughing)  No! It’s the flowers from the DiMera garden that Ben planted next to the bodies!

For a second when I was watching it, I was like, “Wait!  Maybe Ben was smoking weed as he prepares to go kill people!” (Laughs)

Courtesy/NBC

ROB:  Awesome! (Laughs)  Maybe we should tell our head writers; Josh Griffith and Dena Higley that! (Laughs)

What happened when you told people in the DAYS cast you were the serial killer?

ROB:  I kept it to myself for awhile. I let Kate Mansi know a little bit of what was going on, because we worked together.  I probably told her about a month and a half or two months down the road.   It’s a game you play.   It’s an actor’s power to have something like that.  It was so funny.  Everyone on set was wondering if they were going to get fired, or be killed!  Everyone was walking around on egg shells in the studio, or hair and make-up, and it was nice to know I had this secret the whole time.  I took a lot of pleasure in that.  It was fun. (Laughs)  I did not tell anyone.

What has been so interesting is that many DAYS fans have been commenting on social media and on my website, that there is no way that Ben is the killer.  They believe Ben is a red-herring for the real killer, even with last week’s reveal. (Laughs)

Courtesy/NBC

ROB:  Hopefully, in the next couple of months they will believe, and see that it is Ben.  They will see plenty!  It’s been crazy, and it’s been awesome all the people that have been reaching out to me. Usually, I see a lot of the same people on Twitter commenting, but now my Twitter feed has kind of blown up since the reveal.  That has been fun to watch, because nobody expected it.  But to what you are saying Michael, I did see that.  A lot of people were saying, “No, way!  It has to be someone else.  It’s not Ben!”

Some fans are of the belief that the killer is really Dr. Daniel (Shawn Christian)! (Laughs)

ROB: Good! Let them think that! (Laughs)

Another big murder is coming shortly.  I think for murdering the next victim, you are either going to be more loved, or more hated by the fans!  Wouldn’t you say?

ROB:  Oh, yeah.  There is a lot more to this story.  I think the fans are going to be very interested to see how it all plays out.

Courtesy/KMansiWhoSay

Will viewers learn more insight into what is causing Ben to be a serial killer?  Obviously, he is so distraught over his girl, Abigail lying to him, and he knows that she slept with Chad.  Thus, he wants to frame Chad for the crimes and get him out of their lives.  But, is there even more of a back-story to Ben that would cause this most heinous of acts?

ROB:  I think at the end of the day it’s a love story, as tragic as it all is.  It’s done out of love, but unfortunately he is going insane.  Ben is able to kind of keep everything under wraps and keep his cool. But in his private moments and when he is alone, that is when he can kind of revel in what has happened.  He can then take deep breathes, and try to regain his composure, and to keep his game face on for the public.

When Ben threw the evidence out in the deep waters of Salem in a trash bag, does he believe at this point, he is home scot-free of his crimes?

Courtesy/NBC

ROB:  I think he thinks he covered it.  I got to tell you, I was so mad.  I did watch the episode.  I remember when we taped that scene.  We did it one take.  I remember when I tied it up and I threw it, I felt that there was air in the bag.  I wanted to do it again and pop a hole in it, because I know these fans don’t miss a beat, and I think that’s great.  I so respect them for that.  But it was so funny, because there was air in the bag when I threw it.  I remember tying it up and asking to do it again, but we couldn’t do it again, because that is how we roll! (Laughs)

Before he disposed of the evidence, Ben’s dad Clyde (James Read) came to see him. At that point, Ben handed the keys back to the house Clyde got for him and Abigail, because he was going to leave town, and wouldn’t be needing them.  But once Clyde revealed that Chad is a wanted man for the murders, Ben did an about face!

Courtesy/NBC

ROB:  It was a quick turn of events, right?  Dad comes in and tells him there is an APB on Chad DiMera, and Ben was going to leave town.  So now at this point, Ben does feel like he has some closure on it, and so he can stick around Salem.  He is going to make Abigail happy, because she didn’t want to leave town to begin with.

This has to be such an internal struggle for the character of Ben.  Deep down he knows the girl he loves is clearly in love with another man … Chad.   No matter what she says, Ben knows she is for the most part constantly lying to him, and does not have the same feelings for him, she does for Chad.  That has to hurt deeply.

ROB:  Ben is constantly stuffing that fact deeper and deeper.  And when somebody does that there is bound to be an explosion.  That’s pretty much where he is at.   He’s been pushing that down and pushing that down.   But he’s a little psycho!   He’s never had a real relationship and he’s never been in love.  Ben has never had a family; he was always on the run.   He has been a loner, and been alone for a long time.  Ben does not know how to handle the whole situation with Abigail and Chad, and if that is taken away from him, or possibly taken away from him, he is going to wipe people out! (Laughs)   It’s the only way …  for him.

When Ben was going to kill Marlena, was he doing that just to set up Chad?  After all, it’s Marlena!  You can never really kill Marlena! (Laughs)

Courtesy/Pinterest

ROB:  Everything Ben does is to set up Chad.  He doesn’t want to hurt anybody.  It’s just the casualties of war.  He didn’t want to kill Serena.  He didn’t want to kill Paige, and he didn’t want to try to kill Marlena (Deidre Hall).  Unfortunately, in order for him to get his plan in gear … looking it across the board, these people are chess pieces that have to go down!  It’s tragic.

What do you think would happen if Clyde finds out Ben has been murdering people?  Do you think he would help his son?

ROB:  I think Clyde knows that Ben has inherited a lot of bad stuff from him.  But I think Clyde was taken off-guard.  The first time he ever saw that side of Ben was in the reveal episode where Ben used the words, “kill him”, and there was a turning point where it showed Clyde looking at Ben for the first time in a different light.  Clyde always thought of him as an innocent young kid, and he just wanted to maintain a relationship with his son.  Clyde is a badass, but I think he now realizes there is something ticking inside of Ben.  He noticed there is a lot more to Ben, perhaps then he thought.

Did you tell anyone in your family that you would be playing a serial killer on TV?

ROB:   I did not tell anyone, except my mom.  It has been so gratifying and emotional, and to have the opportunity to do material I have never done in the soap genre.

It must be so nice for you to not have to play for once … the hunky good-guy?

Courtesy/Twitter

ROB:  Oh, yeah.  I am trying very hard to burying that, but at the end of the day I have to pay my bills.   I have to take it as it comes.  I am not ashamed of anything, or any project I ever worked on.  However, I am just trying to grow my brand, career, and craft.  This was a great opportunity to help me be able to do that.  I am so very grateful to Albert Alaar, our executive producer, and I love what the writers have done.  It’s not your grandmother’s Days of our Lives anymore.  They realized things needed to change, and the boat has sailed, and they are taking initiative.

This storyline that features you, Billy Flynn, and Kate Mansi has become so compelling, and interesting with the change in head writers and with the killer twist.  DAYS is now playing that Abigail and Chad are the star-crossed lovers, and Ben is the interloper.  How has it been working with Billy and Kate through this?

ROB:  I am glad everyone has taken a liking to the story.  I enjoy working with each of them.  And whether they have been in the industry or brand new to it, I will learn something from everybody.  I know Billy Flynn didn’t have much experience coming into Days of our Lives, but I think he is doing a great job.  I love Billy, and I love talking to him.

Would you say Ben’s reign of terror will continue, and the body count will rise?

Courtesy/NBC

ROB:  Yeah!  The body count will rise, I would say so.  Everything is rooted in love as psychotic as that sounds. Ben thinks he is doing the right thing.  He doesn’t even know what he is doing.  These are blackouts.  He thinks this is all Chad DiMera’s fault.  So it doesn’t matter if one person dies or fifty!  In his mind, all these people are dying because of Chad.  That’s a twisted, twisted layer to a person.  Once you tap into that part of your psyche, it worked for me as an actor.  It is truly a great experience to go through as an actor, and weird at the same time.

So to clarify … is Ben aware that he is committing murder?

ROB:  I think he does it, but he is upset that it happened.  There is something that will happen in the near future that shakes Ben to the core.  That’s the full change for him. When that happens, then he will be aware of everything that is happening in real time, rather than playing this game where he is thinking he is doing something right, when it’s not.  There are two different Ben’s. There is Ben the guy that everybody knows who is the bartender and the nice guy who is with Abigail, and then there is “Benjamin” who is that second personality, and so that his old life, new life, and his alter ego.  I feel like Benjamin blacks out and wipes people out, and does crazy stuff. (Laughs)  Then there is Ben, who is the nice guy who takes the hand of the little princess of Salem.  Right now, I have so much love for Ben Weston.   That’s why I am so happy the producers entrusted me with this part, and being able to show the differences, which will air around November.  When I first read all of this I was like, “They either want to see me fail … or they trust me.”  They told me they completely trust me, and I am so grateful for that. We have all grown a lot as a team on this show, which has been great.

When you were informed that Ben was going to turn out to be necktie serial killer? How did that conversation go down?

Courtesy/NBC

ROB:  Albert called me up and sat me down, and Josh Griffith chatted with me, too. The first thing I thought was, “This is terrific!”  Then the second thing I thought was “Wow. This could be my exit.  I don’t know.”   Me as Rob, knowing if something like this was happening in my own real love life (like Abigail and Chad sleeping together), I would be snapping everywhere!  So, when the change finally happened, I was like, “Thank God! Let me play this guy honestly, and stop treating him like a child.”  I realized I am going to take the ball and run with it.

And there’s even another wrinkle to the story! Abigail is pregnant, and the audience thinks Chad is the baby daddy.

ROB:  Yes, and that is another layer to this story.  Ben knows there is a chance that the baby could be Chad’s, because of what Clyde did.  Clyde switched the DNA in the office and he had his guy go in there, and assure that the results would read that it was Ben’s baby.  The audience, nor Ben, (although Ben has an inkling that it could be Chad’s because they had the affair) knows for sure who the father is.  That whole situation is trouble!

Courtesy/TwitterRWilson

It has been reported you have also been doing some film projects.  You have become quite the in demand young man, Rob Wilson!

ROB:  I finished a film with Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe, DAYS) called “I Know Where Lizzie is” which I believe will air on Lifetime.  In addition, I am working on another film which features a great cast including: Daryl Hannah, Eric Roberts, and Mischa Barton.  The working title was called “Father”, but I think they are now calling it “Papa”.  Oddly enough, I play the role of Ben in that one as well!  This will be a motion picture that will be released in the theatres.  So a lot is going on, and there is so much more to see of what happens with Ben on DAYS, too!

What did you think about “Killer Ben”?  Are you enjoying Rob Scott Wilson’s performance in the storyline?  Who do you think will end up on the murdered list via the Necktie Killer when all is said and done?  Share your thoughts below! But first, watch a little video ditty from DAYS that appeared on the series facebook page shortly after the reveal aired featuring Rob!

Can you believe it was Ben?!

Rob Scott Wilson has definitely grown as an actor. The man is beautiful and when he first entered the scene on DAYS that was all I could see. But as he grew in his love story with Abbi things changed. He really started to blossom. Now with the murder story line I can’t help but find Rob utterly believable. I don’t quite buy that jealousy is the only motivating factor but I buy the intensity he is portraying. His scene today with him remembering the actual murders was chilling only because of how he portrayed those memories. I didn’t believe it was Ben at first but after today I am convinced that is the direction the writers have taken. I don’t like knowing that he will probably exit the show but I have to say that Robert Scott Wilson is going to do very well in Hollywood. Kudos Mr. Wilson for your growth and skills.

I think he has really grown as an actor. I’m enjoying the murder mystery very much Days is in fire!

I’m guessing the Necktie Killer’s next victim will be Will Horton!
I’m wondering how the showdown between Will and Ben will play out?
Will investigates the Necktie Killer and finds out (somehow) that Ben is the killer. Ben learns this and goes after Will. Will will have this big showdown with Ben (for his life), but Ben will strangle him to death with a necktie!

I think Will’s death will be like Frankie Frame’s death on AW in 1996?!

Gmbenet
Gmbenet

A lot of people are thinking Will Horton will be killed off. I think it will be Sonny that ends up dead! I think Sonny will show up in Salem unexpectedly. I also think there will be a confrontation between Sonny and Ben over Chad.

During Ben’s time in Salem, Sonny often had to come between Chad and Ben (not necessarily physically) while Ben worked at TBD. Sonny also fired Ben because of Ben’s bad behavior over Chad (if I remember that correctly). So with this obsession of Ben about Chad, I can see Sonny taking Ben to task over it. Sonny also knows how Chad really feels about Abigail. So there is no telling what will go down in any possible confrontation betweem Ben and Sonny.

When you take into consideration that Freddie Smith voluntarily left the show and Guy Wilson denying that he is leaving Salem, there is the possibility that Sonny is the victim, not Will.

I have read that Guy Wilson was let go from Days. But I don’t think that report has been confirmed. If it has, I stand to be corrected. But if anyone knows for sure that Guy Wilson has been let go, please say so. Otherwise I think there is a strong possibility that the victim who is from one of the main Salem families is going to be Sonny!

Won’t that give Wally Kurth some real good scenes? Can’t you see Eve and Justin grieving together?!?!?! Wow! It may also send Adrienne back to Lucas!

If I am wrong about Sonny being killed, I’m okay with that. But the possibility is too interesting not to consider it.

I’m sorry but, I have not liked him since day one! The first Ben was much better! I don’t think he has strong acting skills at all. He shows no emotion. Just a drab dead pan face. I’m glad that he’s the killer because that means he will leave the show! The only better thing was if he was killed…then he could never come back!!! I just can not stand watching him! Sorry! Just sayin’!

HMMM..in front of RockHudson..well alrighty then…but to get to the point it was no surprise..and kind of an easy go to..that being said I hope the new writers realize the pot of gold they have..BillFlynn is the perfect EJ replacement..JenLilli is the perfect Sami replacement and both are tied to the canvas..these two characters together would lift ratings twice as much..Theresa in the Dimera mansion and Abigail pregnant with Chad’s baby and the supposed father a serial killer exposed..Theresa blanking and threatening Nicole at every turn over using Dimera money to take Basic Black from her for her own..Theresa at odds with STEPHANO AND VICTOR..Brady jealous..Kate being her slick self to get on Theresa’s good side to blindside Basic Black out of her control..Chad raising Brady’s baby..and all through it a hot steamy romance of Theresa and Chad..COME ON TPTB…it would make up for all the senseless murders and cast cuts and they are GOLDEN…

davlestev1

And while you’re at it have Marlena open a clinic in the impoverished part of Salem..we know there is one..every town has one..Julie as the receptionist..Maggie as a counselor for AA..Victor won’t like that..Jennifer as a HR consultant..Hope making certain clinic patients nervous when she visits during a clinic storyline..not a heavy addition to the canvas but one that explores issues with these strong ladies at the fore dealing with a patient storyline at least twice a year..A gala once a year for fundraising and light moments..have Abe and Roman and Rafe spotlight big brothers of the Salem PD and bring in a troubled teen here and there…JMO

Good one, Jimh! Ben is definitely a dirty rat! That much we do know. BTW, I’m wondering how many people know what we have referenced regarding “Ben” the song and the movie?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Michael Jackson was the original singer of “Ben” which was then used as the theme song for the movie “Ben” which was part 2 of the original “Willard.”

“Willard” was the loner who befriended a couple rats and bred and taught them how to attack. One of the rats was named Ben.

In “Ben,” the focus was on a little boy who was sick and he had a friend in Ben…the rat from the first movie.

There has been a remake of “Willard” which used the song “Ben.”

I liked Robert on the re-boot of AMC, and I will admit, I was less than impressed with Ben as a character, but I didn’t blame Robert for that.

However, the new writers have breathed life into Ben by making him a cold blooded killer and I’m glad to see Robert “take the ball and run with it” and keep the story a secret, heightening the suspense for the fans as well as his fellow cast members, rather than sit back and whine that he was thrown under a bus and destroy the suspense for loyal fans.

Robert is right – this is (well, was) an amazing opportunity for him as an actor! I wish him continued success in his career!!

Sounds like he’s pretty busy. He’s doing a good job on the show. Although, I don’t like all the killing–especially Paige. And Abby should have kicked Ben to the curb after he went off on her about Chad.

Mary SF

If Ben is truly the killer then what’s the point in watching? I have zero interest in watching Ben go around killing a bunch of people while the Salem Police fumble around trying to figure it out. If there is any fun in the serial killer story line on a soap it is trying to solve the mystery along with the cops, looking for clues and enjoying the twists. Otherwise it is just depressing story of people dying, which I will FF over to hopefully enjoy other stories on the show– really disappointed beyond words— my only hope is despite what they are telling this actor there is something else going on– I’ve watch soaps for a long time and they never just casually reveal the “killer” so early in the story, out of sweeps—-so it still seems fishy to me, but I will play along, Ben’s the killer, ho hum—sigh.

Rose
Rose

Haha right?! So if Ben is the killer can anyone actually tell me the motive????
“So I have this girlfriend that doesn’t respect marriage vows, and I was warned about this prior to even dating her. But I dated her anyway, even though she cheats with married men. Then she is unfaithful to me. And instead of confronting her, or you know, having self respect, I keep it to myself and continue dating her. Then she is pregnant and I’m just trusting that the baby is mine, cause I TOTALLY believe she would be honest with me about a baby, that is different from being dishonest about everything else. But this guy keeps hanging around her so instead of like breaking up with the bitch and getting custody of my kid, I know what I’ll do. I’ll kill some totally random people that I or this guy barely know and frame him. Cause the solution to having and unfaithful finance is totally murdering random people.” WTF???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the point in watching is there is more to this story than meets the eye. You have to factor in Andre DiMera. He MUST be tied to this murder plot in some way. Andre also has an interest in “getting Chad DiMera”. My guess is that it has something to do with being Stefano’s heir apparent “head of the DiMera family”. Chad doesn’t want to be evil… Andres…is rotten to the core!

In addition to seeing who else will be killed, true, a depressing and/or scary thought because of the excellent performance of Rob Scott Wilson, we must wait for the true climax of the story, which will be the clearing of Chad because Ben is caught and the tie in to Andre DiMera.

My two big questions will be what will they do to Ben and how will Abigail react when she finds out the murders in Salem are directly tied to her one night stand with Chad DiMera. Will Abigail survive that revelation or will it drive her insane?

Another question is who fathered Abigail’s baby and will the baby survive. I do not see a future for Chad and Abigail because of Stefano. If that baby is Chad’s it will be “Sami and EJ” all over again regarding the baby. Not at all looking forward to that.

Mary SF
Mary SF

I’m sorry, but when you go to a restaurant and there is an item on the menu that makes it sounds like you are going to get a prime rib steak and then they bring you a hamburger, no matter how good the hamburger it will never taste as good as the steak you were expecting.

All the hype on this story promised me a good old fashioned murder mystery and the point of a murder mystery is not to know who the killer is until the very end. That is what I was expecting, that is what I was looking forward– so I don’t care how well they tell this tale now, as a murder mystery it has been ruin for me. If Ben had been revealed as the killer at the end the story, and insane like Norman Bates was revealed to be the crazed killer in Psycho that would of been great.

But for me this is no longer a murder mystery, but a thriller, which is a different type of tale. So as a murder mystery there is no point in watching if you know who the killer is, as a thriller, the tale goes on, but right now, after seeing the hamburger on my plate, it is hard to get excited about it, when I was really looking forward to that steak.

What I would like is for Andre to discover the truth. Then we could all sit back watching Andre go postal all over Ben for framing Chad and Clyde for killing EJ. Neither Ben nor Clyde would stand a ghost of a chance against a determined vengeful Andre.

CeeCee

Yes, it does seem fishy. I guess he could be just, as Kelly said, a psychopath. That is the motive…..he’s a sick puppy, Mary SF, LOL. I did mention when the murders started that it was Ben. Actually, doing the reveal this way is kind of clever. Even though you see the scenes through Ben’s eyes, the killer still has the mask on which leaves me wondering if there is still a twist to come.

What an class act! I did never care for Ben upon til now. This was the wisest and most clever decision to go with the character. It will also give RSW a great chance and opportunity to show his range as an actor. He seemed little unsure of the material first but decided to roll with it and go all the way. Brave, you will shine in these scenes im sure!

Good luck with your upcmoing movies Rob! 🙂

As for the ppl NOT getting this, Im sure it will be revealed more into Ben´s background. You forget that he grew up watching Clyde abuse his mother. And him and Jordan prob saw alot of stuff. Robert is doing a great job and Kassie(Eve) had me in tears with her guilt ridden grief..after Paiges death.

Rob has done really well with this storyline. I was even impressed before he was revealed as the killer. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

Rob Wilson is awesome and I am so happy that they gave him this storyline. Remember that Matt Bomer played a killer on (Ben as well) GL. Now look where Matt Bomer is!

Well, I will say the stories and the pacing are much improved.

Billy Flynn, to me, is who is driving the serial killer story. Good for Rob Scott Wilson
that he is being allowed to stretch his wings, but THIS story has nowhere the
intrigue The LOVING serial killer story had when the show was facing
cancellation.

Kate
Kate

I know Billy Flynn didn’t have much experience coming into Days of our Lives, but I think he is doing a great job.

What difference does it make? Billy is 50x the actor Robert is. That’s one of the reasons so many people were taken aback by the serial killer revelation. They would have preferred a better actor. I’ve mostly been disappointed in the storyline.

I can’t wait until Ben is gone.

Robert Scott Wilson is doing a really good job playing an evil character.Really scaring me through the tv screen.Ben was a little boring as Mr.Nice Guy.With the dark hair and good looks of Robert W. he should have been cast has an evil Dimera..he plays evil so well.Kudos to him and Billy F.I am just loving this new Chad.

Robert Scott Wilson is great as Ben, but the decision that tptb killed off Will has caused me to quit watching dool. Didn’t care to much for the actor playing Will but get a new actor instead of killing the character. They could have killed off Lucas or Nicole, either would be fine.

I THOUGHT CLYDE WESTON (JAMES READ) WAS THE NECKTIE KILLER! I WAS WRONG! IT WAS BEN (ROBERT SCOTT WILSON)! ROBERT IS A TALENTED ACTOR THOUGH!

DAYS Promo: What’s Going To Happen At Jarlena’s Wedding Anniversary Shindig?

Coming up next week on Days of our Lives, prepare for drama, drama, and more drama! From the looks of the latest promo for the NBC soap opera, the action takes place at Marlena (Deidre Hall) and John’s (Drake Hogestyn) surprise one-year wedding anniversary soirée, where things could take a deadly turn!

But with the Kristen (Stacy Haiduk) masquerading as “Nicole” plot reaching new heights, Anna DiMera (Leann Hunley) and Tony DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) back in Salem, and the promo telling viewers “For one guest, the party, is over” followed by Sonny (Freddie Smith) yelling, “She’s got a gun!” and Brady’s (Eric Martsolf) ending line, “Oh, my God!” there is plenty to conjecture.

Also seen in the teaser is Kate (Lauren Koslow) trying to rip off the face of Susan Banks (Stacy Haiduk), and Stefan (Brandon Barash) and Gabi (Camila Banus) getting hot and heavy and Eric (Greg Vaughan) yelling, “No!”

So, check out the promo below and then let us know via the comment section below, what you think is about to go down at Jarlena’s party, where last August at their nuptials … things did not go off without a hitch, either!

DAYS Stacy Haiduk and Eric Martsolf Talk Kristen & Brady’s Twisted Relationship : The Mask, The Deception, The Sex

Last week on Days of our Lives, Kristen (Stacy Haiduk) was able to get the man she craves in between the sheets.  So, just how did that happen when Brady Black (Eric Martsolf) had no idea she was alive?  Well … he still doesn’t, really.  You see, Kristen returned to Salem disguised as another ex flame of Brady’s, Nicole Walker (who everyone believed died in the warehouse explosion).  And Kristen has been parading around town donning an incredible likeness of Nicole’s face – via a prosthetic mask – and some other tricks to sound and look just like her!

Kristen’s goal is to infiltrate Salem, remind Brady of the love and passion they shared, take over DiMera Enterprises, and who knows what else!  And everyone who stands in her way, better watch out as we have seen! We are speaking to you (the late) Ted, and (once kidnapped) Kate, et al.

Fans of the NBC daytime drama series have followed the tortured relationship between Kristen and Brady for years and through many plots; Kristen was first played and brought to life by Eileen Davidson, and for well over a year now by Stacy Haiduk.  Not only has Haiduk reprised the role of a frustrated, vengeful Kristen, she is also playing at times multiple roles: the wacky and often misunderstood, Susan Banks, Kristen playing Susan, or Kristen pretending to be Sister Mary Moira.

As for Daytime Emmy winner, Eric Martsolf, this latest story arc puts him front and center as viewers watch to see if what Brady senses, and the clues, and the feelings he is having, bring him to the conclusion that he has been duped by Kristen, and that her horrendous scheme – pretending to be Nicole (Arianne Zucker), and dumping Nicole’s longtime love Eric (Greg Vaughan) to be with him have a result that is unexpected or catastrophic!

Michael Fairman TV sat down with Stacy and Eric for this conversation about: all the plot twists, and playing the drama and the humor of the situations they find themselves in as actors in a wild story that only head writer Ron Carlivati could pen and keep the audience on the edge of their seats in the process. Check out this oh-so-fun, direct, and enlightening chat with two of DAYS most shining stars.

Eric, what has it been like working in this part of your storyline; where there’s the character of Kristen in its many forms: Arianne Zucker playing “Nicole” (but it’s really Kristen), Kristen as Susan, and the real Kristen, etc?

ERIC:  It’s been a nightmare Michael.  (Laughs)  I don’t know who I’m sleeping with anymore.  I’m at the point where I go home at night, and I just tug on my wife’s cheek just to make sure that she is not my ex-girlfriend from high school.

When you first heard of this storyline, and that it was going to facilitate how Arianne was going to come back to the show… and that it was supposed to be Kristen in a Nicole Walker prosthetic mask with a voice alternator, what went through your mind?

ERIC:  I think in the back of Ron’s Carlivati’s (head writer, DAYS) mind, he was thinking to himself, “This dude started his soap career on Passions, he’s okay with this kind of thing,” and honestly, nothing surprises me anymore.  When you’re thrown into that supernatural, crazy reality, doesn’t-live-here sort of atmosphere for you first soap gig, you don’t sweat a mask and a voice modulator.  That’s just par for the course.  My biggest problem was the body thing … that Brady is not able to distinguish one body from the other, because I would as Eric.  My God, I know every inch of my wife’s body.  So, it’s difficult to get my head around that, but at the same time, I’m going with the whole “love is blind” thing here. (Laughs)

Courtesy/NBC

(Laughs) I was going just going to say that Brady would absolutely know Kristen’s body from how passionate their relationship has been in the past, as well, he would Nicole’s body from his relationship with her.

ERIC:  Since Kristen did finally just succeed – let’s use the word in “seducing” him, and using her wonderful feminine wiles as only Kristen has to get Brady in to bed, there was also another twist.  What plays after that is that he notices the tattoo that’s been removed, and she plays it off as scarring from the fire.  What’s going through his mind as he is making love to Nicole is a “Kristen train”.  He can’t get Kristen out of his mind, and the guilt that he feels about that is horrendous.

Right! Brady is thinking: “Why am I feeling this when I am supposed to be with Nicole!?”

ERIC:  Right!  Brady has been waiting for a relationship for God knows how many years now – at least a successful one.  He is so eager to have this work, even though he has been concerned about how Eric (Greg Vaughan) would feel about this.  In Brady’s mind, Eric is done with Nicole.  He’s good.  He loves Sarah (Linsey Godfrey).  This is fair game.  Brady and Nicole have always been close … they’ve been close before … so, for him, it’s, why not give it a fair try?   However, he finds himself now thinking about another woman the whole time.  That’s rough.

Courtesy/NBC

Do you think in the back of his mind, that this whole time, he possibly knew that “Nicole” was Kristen?

ERIC:  Well, you just have to wait.  There will be a reveal eventually, obviously, but until then, let the games play on.

So, once Brady and “Nicole” have sex, he keeps thinking about Kristen?

ERIC:  Constantly!  She just plagues his mind.  I think he’s realizing that his affection for Kristen is anything but dead and is very alive, and I think this is Kristen’s master plan from the very beginning.  She knows that she pervades his soul, and once she does reveal herself, I would guess he would probably be surprised, maybe a little angry, but in the end … you can’t deny what your heart and your body wants, right?

One of my favorite recent scenes had Brady half-naked and Kristen as Susan getting into his room, because she was looking for the MIA Nicole mask she so desperately needed.  She finds herself gawking and lusting after Brady under her disguise, and he tries to remove himself from the situation and says, “Susan, I’m going to get in the shower…”

ERIC:  Yeah! And, “It’s not going to happen, baby.”

What was that like doing that scene?

STACY:  I loved it!  I thought Eric was brilliant in it.  I watched it, and I thought, “Oh, my God!”  (Laughs) It is one of my all-time favorite scenes.

Photo: JPI

ERIC:  Kristen is a tiger.

STACY:  She is a tiger.  She’s got a goal, and she is going to go after that.  She has obstacles that are going to come in-between her goal, but she will go after whatever she wants.

When Stacy comes in to Brady’s room as Susan, were you not laughing?

ERIC: No!  I thought she was hot. (Laughs)

STACY:  He did … he loved it.  You liked me, didn’t you baby? (Laughs)

ERIC:  I don’t think anybody can deny that Stacy Haiduk’s portrayal of Susan Banks is ridiculously good.  Everything from her delivery … to her facial expressions.  I think it is amazing.  I mean, it is corny, and it is fun, and soaps need characters like that once in a while to lighten the load of the heavy dialogue and the drama.  It’s a welcomed addition.  So, I love playing scenes with Susan.

Eric, you always have been able play the straight-man so well in comedic scenes with impeccable timing,

STACY:  You’re brilliant, Eric.

ERIC:  You guys are being very nice to me.

STACY:  You are.  I remember on the day how much fun we had, but then, seeing it back and the crap that I was giving you, and just the stuff you were giving back was so beautiful, and innocent, and so alive.  It was so funny.

Does Kristen think that now that she finally got Brady into bed that she won … that she got what she wanted … even if she had to don a “Nicole” mask to do it?

STACY:  Well, no, because she still can’t be really Kristen.  I think she is grateful that she gets to be with him.  That’s one of her biggest goals: to be with Brady and she wants to have him fall back in love with her again.  But for her, now it’s all about, “How do I reveal myself so that he doesn’t get scared away?”  That’s the toughest part for her.  Kristen’s love is so deep that it goes beyond this mask.  So, how is it going to be when he sees her?   Is he going to freak out?  What’s going to happen?

ERIC:  Did you think Kristen would be a little pissed off and think, “Oh my God.  He did go for Nicole?”

STACY:  Yes!  I do, because she’s like, “Finally, I got him!  But wait a minute … did I get him because I was Nicole … or because I was Kristen?”  As Kristen, she always believes there is something deeper between them and a deep connection.  That remains a driving force to her.

Photo: JPI

ERIC:  That’s why I love these characters so much, because of you and the history of Kristen with Brady.  She’s always wanted him as much as he has wanted her.  She’s always wanted to be loved.

STACY:  Yes … and very much so.

ERIC:  Kristen had always wanted to be a part of the DiMera Empire, just as Brady has always wanted to be a part of the Kiriakis Empire, and they’ve always wanted love.  They’ve never had it.  They believe in the back of their minds that anything is attainable.  So, I can see why Kristen would just forgo the Nicole disguise and just go, “He wants me.”

STACY:  Kristen wants to believe that Brady knows it.  She says to herself, “He knows it’s me inside and behind the mask.  When he finds out, he will fall back in love with me.”

Now that she actually had sex with Brady, wouldn’t that make Kristen even more insatiable to be with him? Like, “I’ve got to have him!?”

STACY:  The fear is still .. what happens she takes this mask off?  She always says, “I’ll reveal myself, but I have to do it slowly when it is the right time.”  I think there is that built up frustration now for her, absolutely!

Arianne Zucker really has Stacy’s mannerisms down as Kristen.  It really comes into in scenes where “Nicole” goes off on someone or loses her temper.  Eric, you have worked with Arianne for years on this show.  What do you think about her performances in this storyline?

ERIC:  I have worked with Ari over the years, and I have enjoyed it a lot.  Ari did do her homework.  She did study Stacy’s tape, and she watched her mannerisms, and she took it very seriously.  I know that because she is a hard worker, as much as a goofball as she is, she does work hard, and she wanted it to be good.  I think my favorite parts were the Kristen meltdowns.  You have to understand though; Stacy and Ari get along very well!  They’re kind of two peas in a pod.  So, it wasn’t a big stretch for her to take on how Stacy would play those types of scenes.  They’re both animated, they’re both wild people by nature, and so, it was a good fit.  It was a smart idea from the writers.

STACY:  It was a good fit!

ERIC:  I’ve been out with the two of them, and it’s hard to tell the two of them apart. (Laughs)

STACY:  We are just like two cuddly bunnies.

ERIC:  They’re like flirting with each other, and hugging each other.  You find yourself thinking, “Are they going to start ordering the same food at the same time?  This is getting weird. (Laughs)

Courtesy/NBC

In the recent scene that aired; where Kristen as “Nicole” turns off the light while having sex with Brady, is she worried her plan will now go awry?

STACY:  Yes.  I think she is worried about her body because it is burned.  You know, how they take a tattoo off, and it’s as painful as can be.  Not that I’ve had that done personally.  I like my tats, but I hear it is painful.  So, in the storyline, the burn is that pain that she has and the tattoo. There’s a part of her that thinks,  she has to cover it up, and turn the lights down low.

ERIC:  “Nicole” is sleeping, and Brady is rubbing his hands over her shoulder and touching her body, and as he goes over the burn marks.  He sees a flash of the tattoo!  That is a pivotal moment when he starts to put some pieces together.   He thinks, “Woah! That’s exactly where that tattoo was.”  It’s a slow little rollercoaster ride.

Courtesy/NBC

In the past, Kristen then played by Eileen Davidson, drugged and raped Father Eric.  Stacy, did you ever see that story arc?  Literally the sex scene is playing on the screen at Kristen’s wedding to Brady and then all hell breaks loose.  This to say Kristen is notorious for the ways and the lengths she goes to get her men into bed.

STACY:  Yes! I saw her Eileen do those scenes.

ERIC:  You also saw how close Kristen and Brady were to their dream, to their happiness, their goal, which was they were going to marry each other.  Brady is looking upon his loved ones in this town and thinking, “I know what you all think of her, but I’m going to show you our love on this screen, and once you see the connection that we have here as a couple, you all are going to be convinced that we belong together as well.  This is the happiest day of my life,” and the screen comes up and it’s his brother banging Kristen instead.

Marlena (Deidre Hall) played the wrong DVD!

STACY:  It was so good.  See, I try to find as much info as I can on the character’s past, because all of the time I’m trying to find where these characters have been in their dark and twisted past.

Photo: JPI

ERIC:  You’re putting your own stamp on Kristen.  You got a direct call from DAYS casting department, didn’t you … when they were recasting the role?

STACY:  Yes.  You have to understand, I had two really separate characters to play when I was on Y&R.  One was a doctor, and one was this crazy passionate, wild, little minx.

ERIC:  I will say to find the wild and the beauty in one package is not easy in any town, yet alone Los Angeles.  I’m glad they called you, because you have that.  You have that villainous nature, but you also are able to show a vulnerable side to Kristen that is going to be a lot of fun and interesting to see.

Stacy is one of those people that will leap off of the screen at you and you will remember her.  She is one actress that will have fans talking about their work, like when you played crazy Patty Williams on Y&R.  The audience was on the edge of their seats going, “Oh, my God!  What is Patty going to do next?”

STACY:  I never knew what she was going to do!

Photo: JPI

Eric, has Stacy come to you at any point where she been overwhelmed by the task at hand; playing Susan while playing Kristen, etc, and the two of you have a moment where you work through some of the challenges of complex scenes  … and ones where she is playing multiple characters?

ERIC:  We’ve had many moments  to speak of.

STACY:  I always come into Eric’s room, and am like, “I’m scared!”

ERIC:  It’s funny you mention it.  We have had some very emotional scenes, and Stacy – who cares so damn much about this job and portraying this character correctly – that she gets a little overwhelmed, and the material that they give her is overwhelming for any anybody on any level.  I have looked at her in the eyes, and said, “You’ve got this gig.  You are this character.  You are knocking it out of the park.  Just do it.  Just be you.”   I can’t wait for people to see some of the stuff we have shot recently and have been doing.

Photo: JPI

Stacy, do you think Kristen can be redeemed? Many characters on daytime … and on DAYS … have done horrible things and later turned over a new leaf.

STACY:  The thing is that villains are bad and all that other crap, but they’ve got a lot of stuff going on inside and insecurities, and they’ve got a heart.  I’m sorry, the villain with a heart of gold, can be very  true.  I never see villains (and I play them a lot) as bad.  You have to find where it comes from … how far does this go … where did that little seed change … and what made them go into the dark, but also, where is the good?  You want to bring the good to it, too.

ERIC:  Let’s face it!  Star Wars is all about Darth Vader and how he became that because it’s intriguing.

Because of the pace in which DAYS tapes its episodes; do the two of you find time to run lines together before you go hit the set?

ERIC:  We are running out of time to run lines.  It’s pretty wild.  Funnily enough, I was recently filming a movie and I was so underwhelmed at the pace of everything.  I’ve gotten so accustomed to moving at this militant style, that as hard as it is, it is preferable to me now.  I almost like it because you don’t have time to overthink what you are going to do, and you end up getting more visceral and natural reactions to the material.  You can overthink a scene, and you can come to a wrong performance that way.  When you burn your fingers on a hot stove, that’s the most natural reaction you are going to get.  You can’t have ten minutes to think about how you are going to scream about that pain.

Photo: JPI

But, would you like the pace of shooting the show to be a bit slower?

STACY:  I would like to, but I do think sometimes just jumping in, and going and seeing what happens is great.  I love that.  I do appreciate that.

ERIC:  It’s scary.

STACY:  It is scary.  I would love if we would get to do a rehearsal and then two takes just to see, and then they can mix  together what happens.  Sometimes I am hard on myself as an actress.  I’ve always been.  It’s that jumping in when you only get to do one take.  You have to just give it everything you’ve got.

ERIC:  You can have a second take.  Want me to give you a little secret?  All you have to do is screw up your last line.

STACY:  I can’t do that.   I don’t even need it to be perfect because nothing is perfect.  It doesn’t matter what I’ve done if I sometimes don’t feel it.  I need to feel it when I’m on that set.  I need to feel something because when I shut down, I close myself off.  It’s like an athlete who has just got to  train as hard as they can to reach their goal.

ERIC:  You’re an Olympic swimmer!

STACY:  You’ve got to do it as hard as you can.  You practice, and you practice, and you practice, and you practice, so that when you come to that day, you do the best you can, but sometimes you are disappointed because you didn’t get that one last thing you had hoped for.

Courtesy/NBC

How do you view what happened to Eric with Kristen, who disguised as Nicole, tricked Brady into bed with her?  Some fans commented that that they thought it was akin to a rape.

ERIC:  No, I would disagree with that theory.  I believe there is a high degree of deception in this, but there is a willingness on behalf of Brady.  He’s not drugged.  He’s not being forced to do anything.  Deception, yes.  Rape, no.

Stacy, what do you think?

STACY:  Total deception.  There is no rape.  There is absolutely no rape.  These are willing participants; he just doesn’t know exactly who he is dealing with.

ERIC:  I appreciate the context of how somebody could construe that, and the seriousness of the matter.  I don’t think it really has a place in this particular storyline.

Do you guys think that Brady and Kristen are each other’s star-crossed lovers in a weird, twisted, bizarre way?

ERIC:  I don’t know.  I think they’re magnetism can’t be denied.  I think the hurdles that they’ve jumped through are astronomical.  Will they end up together in the end?  Who knows!  Will there ever be an end?  Who knows!  It’s definitely been one of, if not the most, in-depth relationships Brady has ever had.

Photo: JPI

And intense!

ERIC:  Yeah.  They’ve just gone through so much to be together, and when you do that, anybody who is married knows that, that’s where the good stuff is; the wars that you win together and the battles that you go through.  When you come out of the war, and you’re still together, that’s the bond.  That’s what lasts.

What would Kristen do if she couldn’t have Brady in the end?  Would she find a new obsession?  What if she could not nab her man?

STACY:  Wow!  Hmmm. (Laughs)  She’s going to get her man.  She wants her man.  She wouldn’t settle.  She’d keep fighting.  I would say to her, “Kristen, keep fighting the good fight.”

So, do you think Kristen will reveal herself to Brady sooner than later? Will Brady figure out what Kristen has been doing to get to him?  Will Brady turn Kristen away if he knew she was alive and back in action  … or would he fall back into her arms? Share your theories via the comment section below.

Daytime Emmys To Merge Younger Actor & Actress Category Into One As Gender-Inclusive Categories Are On The Rise

The upcoming 47th annual Daytime Emmys are already making some changes to key categories and specifically this one that affects daytime drama performers.  Word from Variety is that NATAS (National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) is going to announce that they are combining the Younger Actor and Actress categories into one gender-neutral category

Not only will the Younger performer category be gender-inclusive, but network soap performances will be combined with digital drama series performances for the category.  Previously, for this past Daytime Emmys, NATAS had changed the Guest Performer in a Drama Series to be gender-inclusive.

This category was initially created in 1985 when it was called the Outstanding Ingenue and then from there tweaked into Outstanding Juvenile Female and Male, and more recently that morphed into the Younger Actor and Actress categories.

Photo: JPI

Former GH star Hayley Erin (Ex-Kiki) and former DAYS star, Kyle Pettis (Ex-Theo) will now be the last female and male to win the two separate categories with this new move for 2020.

Fans of film and TV have noticed that on several award shows on MTV: their Movie and TV Awards and their VMA’s, there are several gender-inclusive categories, as well as the Television Critics Association Awards who for instance doles out Outstanding Individual Achievement in Drama in comedy.
