DAYS Stars Speak Out On The Exit Of Chandler Massey & The Arrival Of Guy Wilson!

Last month, not only were  Chandler Massey and his fans stunned that Days of our Lives informed him on a Friday tape day that it would be his last, but so were many of his long time cast mates!

As the news spread like wildfire that the DAYS brass decided to end Massey’s contract three months earlier than anticipated, and that they had already had a recast waiting in the wings to take over the exceedingly important and popular role of Will Horton, it certainly was an uncomfortable situation for all involved.   When the news leaked that Guy Wilson was the chosen recast, the young actor has been hoping that DAYS viewers will give him the opportunity to make the character of Will his own.

On-Air On-Soaps spoke with three of Chandler’s former cast mates at Kate Mansi’s birthday (Abigail, DAYS) party this past weekend: Blake Berris (Nick), Camila Banus (Gabi),  and Casey Deidrick (Chad).  The actors  shared their feelings on how the news was given to Chandler that he was done at DAYS, and what it has been like meeting or working with Guy for the first time.  (Casey Deidrick has already finished taping at DAYS, so he has not worked with Wilson)

Blake Berris (Nick) on Chandler’s exit:  “Actually, I was going to carpool with Chandler on the way to the airport to leave for our fans events in Chicago and Atlanta and I was texting with him. And he said, ‘Change of plans. Today was my last day of work!’ And I went, ‘What?’ Anyways, he is doing great.  Obviously, it’s hard to say goodbye to people who you have worked with so long and are a family.  He is so talented and has a bright future ahead of him. Chandler is excited, and I am excited for him.   But, it was very strange and it happened very quickly.  I think everyone that was at DAYS on that day was kind of taken aback, but I am friends with Chandler, and so I will see him He will land on his feet, I am not worried about that.”

Blake on Guy Wilson’s arrival: “I just met him last week and he is such a sweet guy. I am excited to do some scenes with him.  It was strange just looking at him with Freddie Smith (Sonny), because I am so used to seeing Chandler with him. But that is just one of those weird things that happens on soaps.   But it’s like theatre sometimes the understudy goes on, or they recast the role. It’s kind of the same thing.  I am kind of looking forward to working with his acting style and creating a new on-screen rivalry with Guy.”

Camila Banus (Gabi) on Chandler’s exit:  “It was very upsetting to me.  I kind of asked him what was wrong because I was on set that day, but he was not allowed to tell me anything.  It made me really sad.  I sent him a message afterwards.  It is what it is. We can’t do anything and it sucks because we would have liked to have a going away party for him, because we love him so much.  But the way, it happened it did not allow us as a cast to do that. “

Camila on Guy Wilson’s arrival:  “I do think it was a little unfair of how things played out.  I think everybody deserves that time to adjust, and also for the fans to adjust, and for everything to come out the right way.   Apart from that, I think Guy is a really amazing ‘guy’.  (Laughs)  He is so kind. Guy not only entered the role, but entered the situation with a lot of grace.  Guy feels honored to take on the role of Will.   I think that makes him even better as a person.  He comes in and feels so grateful to be here. One of the things he said to me the other day was, ‘I am excited.  I get to go on stage and do what I love to do everyday.’  And that to me, resonated so much. Sometimes being on the show for three years, I am like, ‘I really don’t like this storyline and I don’t want to go into work right now.’  But Guy reminded me that I am doing every day what I love.”

Casey Deidrick (Chad) on Chandler’s exit:  “I think it is just how it happened.  Imagine going in to work one day and being told that day, (when you are done working) you are not coming back anymore?  It was rough for him, but Chandler is bouncing back.  He is doing what he wants to do know which is auditioning, focusing on school, and he and I have this band together.  Everything is working out.   I don’t think it’s getting him down. He is moving forward from this. ”

What do you think about the sentiments shared by Blake, Camila and Casey? Consensus is that they were disappointed that not a proper goodbye was given to their long time cast mate, Chandler Masssey!  How do you feel about Guy Wilson hearing what the actors had to say about his enthusiasm taking on the role of Will Horton? Weigh-in below!

It sucks for all of them. Chandler was treated horribly. His cast mates are put in dreadful positions, as is the new kid. I’m sure Chandler is and will be fine. TPTB at Days should be ashamed of themselves. They have behaved like playground bullies.

I’d hate to be Guy. It would be hard enough to follow Chandler, but with this added insult, it will be extremely difficult. I wish him well.

I agree with Cindy completely but going a step further, I have decided to eliminate DAYS, after Chandlers appearances end, because of the way they treat people; not comfortable watching the show.

I hope that you are the only one. Sure it sucks what they did, but not watching won’t solve or change anything in regards to what happened. It will hurt ratings and the soap genre needs ratings right now…. It isn’t fair other stars would have to go without a job. Just sayin!

Cindy, I agree with you. I was willing to give GW a chance, but after the his tweet-a-thon, he was a little to familiar with the way he talked about the role and his screen test, which I know he did NOT do w/Freddie. Chandler made that role his. He developed the character, with Freddie. They have been through the struggle of “coming out”, Will’s self doubt issues with Sonny, Baby drama, Nick drama, break-up, back together, shooting, baby and Mom in jail. Now, GW thinks he can come in and step into that role. Chandler and Freddie have a chemistry that does not come along very often. Will and Sonny’s intimacy even when they are just sitting at the apt., comes through the screen and you feel their emotions. That’s because of both of them being such gifted actors. GW you have your hands full in order to convince this CM/Will fan you deserve to play Will Horton.

Thanx

I understand that Chandler wanted to finish his education and I admire him for that. I also understand that he was leaving in December. That being said what Corday (network) did was disrespectful to all involved (especially after telling fans they would be able to watch Chandler through March). Given the way soaps are struggling more respect should have been given to the fans.

Just goes to show that Days management are a bunch of jaded, corporate queens; some of the most vile, vicious creatures on the planet.

I remember when Denise Alexander(Susan Martin) left Days and her popular role 40 years ago and joined GH…it wasnt easy to accept her replacement(4get name at moment) at first but we grew to like her and we moved on…same will happened once we see Guy take over as Will…itll be hard at first but im certain Guy will eventually make the role his own and most fans will accept him just like we did for Susan all those years ago…sure tptb couldve handled C.M. exit a little better but its time to move on whether we like it or not…it wouldve happened anyway!!!

totally agree, all this brouhaha about this behind the scene little ‘drama’ is kind of ridiculous imho.

I think it was so unprofessional what they did to Chandler. Charlie Sheen was right to go on a rant on his behalf. Chandler is apparently a much beloved and valued cast member but they gave him no send off? It’s like sending your kid off to college by just shoving him out the door and saying good luck. It’s just so wrong!

Of cource, Freddie was not allowed to speak his opinion about this situation. That doesn’t surprise me at all. Corday sucks!

Freddie did say a few things about how he felt about this whole mess (these are my words, not his) in a Daytime Royalty interview and he was clearly upset and one just needs to read between the lines or actually just read his words and understand!

Thank you! I’m going to read.

Chandler is a good actor, he played Will very well and made him (with the writers) a really important character on this soap. That being said, it is not the end of the world, he wanted above all a real party for his exit with all his costars/friends celebrating with him..but these costars he will see them again (and doing it right now actually) just not on this set anymore..his choice. Of course it is kind of hard to have such abrupt news, in the moment, a little deception but after that you move on..i am sure he already has.
Now let’s just give Guy his chance like we did with Chandler, let him make the character his own..he seems to have already make smart choices in his way to handle this ‘delicate’ situation, recast. I am curious to see him playing Will Horton !

Nope nope not going to do any of that. My choice. And Chandler didn’t want a huge party he said, but I’m sure he would have like to at least say goodbye to some cast and crew.

Very rude the way TPTB behaved. I’m glad that here we finally read more people upset and speaking their mind about it. Comments in previous Fairman articles about this (Chandler’s exit and the new dude) were always so forgiving for what crap TPTB pulled! I’m not on board with the recast and never will.

He said goodbye a million bloody times! That’s the problem!!!

Your choice.. And mine will be to watch Guy Wilson acting as Will Horton and see if i enjoy his acting, his Will stories (the writers’ job here not really Guy’s..) and his chemistry (or not) with Freddie.

#4everDAYS – Hunh?!

They probably can’t say how they really feel out of respect for their own jobs as well as future jobs. It was handled poorly.

Agreed! There are a lot of unspoken words here.

Seems every player in this game may have had an agenda, but in reality it all became so messy. I think a young actor may not have finessed his plans to leave the show as well as hemight, and the producers in their shortsightedness to address other business issues did not take into account the humanity of of their employee family and loyal fans.

Change is part of daytime drama, obviously. No one needs to make it more difficult than it is, although people — clearly in this csae — more than not, do.

Interesting interesting interesting interesting interesting interesting that Freddie Smith is not mentioned one single time!

Reading between the lines, this just tells me what I’ve been saying the last times, the way Chandler was let go was disgraceful, insensitive and disrespecful to him and everyone else that has been part of Will & Sonny’s storyline and friends with Chandler. There is more to this story and the powers that be again screwed up! I have a feeling that this is not over.

That being said, it’s nice to know that Chandler is bouncing back. You can see it and so is Freddie. It must have been a rough few weeks for all, but especially for Freddie. I am not looking forward to Guy as Will at all. I don’t care really if people disagree with me and think I’m being unfair, but that’s my feeling about this whole disaster. So I have no idea if I will tune in in January. If I don’t I will feel disloyal to Freddie. If I do, I will feel disloyal to Chandler. I can’t stand this recasting stuff.

And it would be nice to hear (more) from Freddie and Chandler what they think about this, but I think that won’t happen for another while.

Oooh, ok, sorry Blake mentioned Freddie. My bad.

bye !

You have the right to your opinion but if i stopped watching soaps just because of recasts id stop watching years ago…there will always be recasting in soaps…been that way since they started on radio!!!

Same here, jimh!!! As I’ve stated before, it’s harder to accept the
recasting situation if a viewer is a Wilson only fan. There are so many
people that only watch Will and Sonny. They have no other characters
and or plots within DOOL to help with the transition. I’m sure most
viewers feel the same way as we do. I hope!!!

Well 4everDAYS, I don’t watch soaps. That’s why I’ve got such a problem with this. I only watched for the WilSon storyline and for the fantastic job Freddie and Chandler did and still do! They’ve been screwed over and that’s not ok.

I hate the fact that Chandler is leaving and I hate the way this all played out. But let’s NOT forget that Chandler was the one who sorta-kinda started this whole thing by blindsiding TPTB after his Emmy win by saying he was planning to leave the show and go back to school.

I’m sure if he had gone to them first to discuss his plans, none of this would have happened. The show happened to find a replacement actor and decided to make their move w/o discussing it with Chandler. Petty? Yes. But poor choices by both parties.

I’m going to miss Chandler, as he and his story is a big part of the reason I started watching DOOL, but I’m not going to stop watching the show because of it. Like others have said, if you stopped watching a show because a favorite has been re-cast, you’ll not be watching ANY soaps.

I AM not watching any soaps. I’m only here for the WilSon storyline portrayed by Freddie and Chandler. And I’ll keep bitching about this out-of-the-blue sudden recast and the way it all happened with the worst timing ever. Nothing adds up and this was a foul move by Corday and his buddies.

I agree SZima– Chandler had madeit clear he was not coming back once his contract was up, and his contract was up when– December? So his time was cut– what– 60 or 90 days shorter than it would have been? The way some people are reacting you would think he was axed with no warning, when leaving was HIS idea. Many many companies, when you ‘give notice’ ahead of time, will tell you not to come back at all as soon as you declare your intent to quit– or they will assign your last day some time during your notice perio (earlier than the last day you scheduled), if they have hired your replacement. Sad for friends and fans, but really not the big deal some are making it out to be, IMO.

Sad to hear how it all went down, it would be very very hard to one day go to work and say that it is your last, Chandler is an amazing actor and person, he will go far, So sad that the cast didn’t have that closer as of fan. But thanks for the comments from Blake, Camila, and Casey, their comments are very positive but can tell, heart broke too, Good luck to Chandler and hope to see him on Some shows again,
For Guy, it is hard enough to fill the big shoes of Chandler and Wilson, but the way he came in is even harder, But good luck to him and looking forward to see Guy in Action with Sonny, and glad the Wilson story line will continue

It has been said that the Days cast members are close. I believe it to be true. If indeed they are I am sure all who worked with Chandler were hurt by how the situation played out. That said, I hope the actors who verbally expressed their feelings do not kreceive any backlash from the network. I respect the actors right NOT to respond publically. NBC is not high on my tv network appreciation list. I don’t even watch NBC Primetime shows, except for Sunday Night Football and its associated pre-game show.

Chandler didn’t deserve to be treated like that.

I hope that Freddie is doing okay with the sudden transition.

The grammar and punctuation errors were distracting.

Acting roles are a job like any other job. He chose to leave, and his bosses found out when the public did at that. That was equally disrespectful on his part.

If you have to replace an employee, you replace him when you need to, not when the exiting employee wants you to.

But he is young. And has the two acting Emmys. He deserved some slack for his tacky timing — and not retribution. Lately the castmembers sound like they’re afraid during interviews. That’s not good for them or the fans and so it can’t be good for the show.

They did not punish Chandler Messy! They moved on. Days of our Lives
is not about CM. DOOL is a soap about many CHARACTERS. I think
Chandler lost site of that or he was advised to garner publicity by his
announcement, thinking he could milk it for much longer than DAYS
would allow. He got what he wanted, just not how he wanted it.

Please he is an adult..not some little helpless child you have to spare ‘bad feelings’..come on.. Days way of handle it was weak and assholish but Chandler was not really better..now let’s move on i am sure Chandler IS OVER IT since a while !

and Daytime emmys mean NOTHING, niet, nada, rien, zip !

-> Judith: “Days way of handle it was weak and assholish but Chandler was not really better..”

So you are saying Chandler’s way of handling this was weak and assholish too?!!.. WOW!

The way they let him go was very unprofessional IMO. If it had happened in any business, not just this one, it would still be a crappy thing to do.
TPTB, it seems, no matter the soap, both those that are left and those that aren’t, have proved themselves to be utter shites with the least provocation. ABC was maybe the worst, but it appears that Corday and Co. aren’t much better.

So far, TOLN seems to be different in the way that treat their cast and crew. And for that reason alone I hope they succeed with the AMC and OLTL reboots, to show, if nothing else, that there is a better business model out there than the soulless suits who run things on the networks.

Yeah, ABC and NBC! It really astounds me how they keep treating their cast and crew and it astounds me even more, that fans out there keep making excuses of this and accept it all!!!…. CRAZY!

This speaks volumes to who the bigger person was in this, and it is Chandler, if i had to tell you that. It sure is nice to see that the higher ups at days treat their employees, like the rest of corprate america treat their employees like crap. One can only wonder how long the ratings will hold up after Chandlers last air date. After all he was a 2 time emmy winning actor. I for one will not stop watching as there are a lot of great people that works at Days actors and crew. I will support Guy fully in the role of Will, it is not his fault how this went down. I should only hope that Days has learn form this.

One actor, one pairing doesn’t make ratings, good stories do !

I’ll be glad when the Chandler Messy saga is over!!!

How and when did Chandler Massey tell “Days of Our Lives” that he was leaving?

On live TV right after the emmy win possibly in july.

He was asked what his plan was, and he said he will like to go back to school, that is an honest answer. He deserve better, but he has a bright future unlike Days, a show with a bad rating, he is lucky he got out before the show tank and gets canceled. Let’s be real that is where the show is heading

I agree Zy! He just simply replied to a journalist’s question. He didn’t say he was leaving DAYS. He said what his plans are after his contract is over, as there was the possibility that his contract wasn’t going to be renewed. How could he know in June if the DAYS people woud keep him after December. Of course he had plans for after December. He’d be a fool not to! Had DAYS wanted to keep him after December and had told him around September (or whenever they let their actors know), then I’m sure Chandler would have thought about whether to stay or not. He may still have said, no he doesn’t want to renew, but he could have just as well have decided the to say tht he did want to stay longer. In June he just never said he’s done!.. There is more to this story. It’s Corday being a fool, that’s for sure!

It was june 16th, Fathers Day and Ken Corday’s birthday.I

I think the whole situation was handled poorly and I know this wont be popular to say but truthfully Chandler blindsided Corday and company with his announcement at the Emmys that he wouldn’t re-sign. It was such a big night for both him and the show so his timing was a tad…tacky. The way he was let go definitely could have been handled WAY better but it’s the nature of the business and most likely they were working with the 13 week cycle rule. Show was about to go on hiatus too. I have enjoyed very much Chandler’s portrayal of Will and I wish him nothing but the best. I know he will do well. As for Guy Wilson I look forward to seeing his version. It’s gonna be tough but I am more than willing to give him a chance. I wish him much success in the role and I’m glad the WilSon story will continue

He NEVER said he wouldn’t re-sign! A journalist asked him what he’d do after his contract ends in December – because in June that’s what Chandler was assuming would happen – and he just mentioned that his plans would be to go back to school. How could he know in June if the bloody show would want to keep him after December. He’s GOT to have plans for the eventuality, that they would not keep him right? So, his plans were to go back to school, if the contract would have indeed not been renewed. If they had told him he can stay another year and he would have liked the conditions, I’m sure he would have put on hold school for another year.

Anyway, I just know that in June Chandler was not 100% decided about leaving or staying on DAYS. It wasn’t even sure what was going to happen by mid August. Corday didn’t give Chandler a choice and messed this up all by himself and now he’s got to deal with it.

I call him Chandler Messy because he created a big mess with his
mouth. He ran his mouth ten months before his expected last airdate!!!
M-E-S-S-Y!!!!! He messed up! He created a messy situation. To me, he
will always be Chandler Messy!

I so agree with you! This is all on Days and no one else.

ME is” right on” and Chandler didn’t have a chance after he honestly mentioned the ambiguity of his plans beyond December. Management decided to pull the rug out beneath him in a particularly brutal fashion. This has angered Chandler’s fans, Days fans and it seems current and past cast members. A soap hopes to build up a storyline and the actors it uses; it did and lost it in one fell swoop here.Who takes credit for this disaster?

This business doesn’t work like that ! And he knows it, he should have said what every actors in his situation do..they respond : ‘i don’t know, we will see, ect..always an ambiguous, vague PC answer..’ just see JMB (former Lulu on gh who left this year after winning numerous emmys by the way)..she did that perfectly ! If you are a player at the show business game you have to know how to play ! CD is not child or a newbie..It was just not smart move from him and of course Dool, NBC did respond as the corporate big guns they are..no feelings..just petty business..

Thanks EJK! And as usual nobody takes credit for this disaster. But maybe this will change.. Corday didn’t want to make WilSon a super-couple and didn’t want WilSon to get married. Why? He got cold feet? Too gay? Is he caving to the bigots? Is he homophobic himself? Why wouldn’t he want to make them a super-couple or/and married!? He struck gold with the story, he struck gold with the actors and he ‘doesn’t want to make them a super-couple’?!.. I’ve said it before, but WHAT A FOOL! And if he didn’t want all this, why recast Will? WilSon are as it is now already only airing 2 days out of 5.. And when they are on together it’s for maybe 20 seconds (4th of October). Is he dropping the story? If yes, why bother with a recast? If not, why fire Chandler 3 months before CM’s contract ended? Is the new Will cheaper? So what, the minute they found a recast they dump Chandler? Why August 23rd? A day before Chandler was attending a DAYS event weekend. How much more cruel were they planning to be?! Even IF Chandler said something at the EMMYS press thingy, that he shouldn’t have, there was no need to treat him like sh*t! Yes, Chandler is bouncing back and most people have already moved on and are worshipping the new Will as it is anyway, but that doesn’t change the fact, that this is foul stuff happening and we don’t even know the whole story. The one that has to take the entire burden is Freddie Smith. But nobody cares about what he wanted from the WilSon storyline either. It’s business. Yep, a pretty bad and sad one!

Whatever positive buzz this show got the last three years mostly came from that young man and his coming out story. So he said he was leaving Its happened at DOOL a million times before. They had more than enough time to plan for a replacement and give him a proper send off. The show is always preaching family but we got a real chance to see how it treats family and it aint pretty.

great post

Are people KIDDING here? Everyday people, whom I guess don’t matter, go through this kind of thing and much much worse EVERY single day!! I worked for a company for 11 years and was told on a Friday night (over the phone, mind you) that the company was having problems and they had to “let me go”. I worked for another company for 6 years and when cut-backs came, regardless of how terribly fond everyone was of me, I was let go with no party hat, no cake, no nothing, one week’s severence pay and that was it, out, good luck.
So please forgive me if I don’t fall to pieces because some actor gave his notice and the Producers felt that they wanted to get more longevity out of the character’s situation so the sooner they re-cast, the better. Such is the way of the world folks….like sand through the hourglass these are the days of our lives.

100% agree. This happens to the common person all the time. So, why raise such a big hoopla when an actor (who is also an employee) let go. At least the actors get sympathy and support from fans. What does the common man get for her/his hard-work, sincerity, and honesty. Nothing! The employer in a single sentence (in a letter or over the phone) says: The company is broke, you’re laid-off effective, immediately.

lol, yep ! Totally agree Ted Olson. The ‘fans’ making such an ‘offense’ to this ‘nothing’ event..(i mean the way he left not the fact he left..the exit was HIS choice anyway) are so funny..He did not have his BIG goodbye cake..you know it is really bad..when the WW3 begin ? seriously..

Judith – fans are not making such an offense to nothing. It’s certainly not about the goodbye cake. You’ll see clearer one day.

For your sake, I hope we never find out CM was going through a
huge ego trip and not cooperating to the higher success of Wilson.

He didn’t. Corday did.

We all thought there was more to this and we were all right. That is sad how he wal let go and glad he is doing better and getting back out there. You can tell in Freddie Smith interview he wanted to say more but was not allowed. I don’t kow if I will tune in Jan either, but I do love Sonny so will have to see. This is going to be a big adjustment just like Blake said he’s used to seeing Chandler with Freddie and Freddie must feel the same way. Big adjustment all around. We wish you nothing but the best Chandler you are missed and you are still onscreen wait til he’s not anymore then it will really sink in.

he is ‘doing better’..heu he was not hurt you know..lol

seems like it played out behind the scenes just as we had thought…the worst. it was so unfair to chandler AND guy! AND FREDDIE and the whole damn cast…AND TO THE FANS who make the show what it is… they wouldn’t have a TV show if it weren’t for us. and i feel like the just spat in our face for letting chandler go like that. but chandler is an incredible person and is a phenomenal actor. he will go very far! in my opinion…a soap opera is holding him back from his true potential. same goes for freddie smith. can’t wait to see the other projects they take on after this is all said and done. ….i’m also just happy that Guy was a friend of Chandler & Freddie’s before and knew of the storyline and WANTED to portray Will Horton…i feel like he is going to do his absolute best to bring everything he has to the role. and as a fan…that’s all we can ask!

DAYS giveth and DAYS taketh away. Deal with it!!!

I Days will get canceled

Nice capsule of comments and reflections, but one thing Casey Deidrick gets wrong is that being an actor – working under contract – is not like being a regular employee at a regular job. It’s more like being an independent contractor who has set dates and circumstances when the work relationship can end. So his statement about “Imagine going in to work one day and being told that day, (when you are done working) you are not coming back anymore?” should actually read, “Imagine going in to work on a day when your existing contract says that you can be let go, and when you are done working that day, they actually let you go.” .. Having worked as an independent contractor myself, that’s not really too hard to imagine.

Moreover for some regular employees situations like that HAPPEN ! And they never hope for some ‘party’ or goodbye cake ! Seriously..

This is NOT about some freaking party or cake! Seriously.

Well, I may be in the minority here, but I have no sympathy for this individual. Didn’t he publicly say he was leaving right after he received his Emmy award? I guess it was fair game after he gave his notice. DAYS found a talented replacement and needed to move on with the show, I suppose. Most of us aren’t fortunate enough to have a Hollywood acting job, an Emmy award and probably enough money to last beyond the paycheck to paycheck cycle that many of us are stuck in. If I were to publicly say I’m going to leave my job at such and such time, when I want, and on my own terms, I’d probably be fired. It’s DAYS’ right to find an actor who WANTS to be on the show and let go of an actor who publicly has said he no longer WANTS to be on the show. What’s alarming and disappointing to me is the number of average, regular, hardworking honest Americans who seem to support or even celebrate actions and behaviors of politicians, athletes and celebrities that the rest of us would be chastised or punished for. We all make choices that we are responsible for. Mr. Massey made his.

Well said…i agree!!!

100% agree with everything in this post. If I had said in public I want to quit my job, before I reached home there would be a phone message stating I was fired. CM has a lot of money which we the commoners don’t; so life will not be so bad for him.

Believe me, you are not in a minority, many of us feel this same way. There are other people in this world I can retain empathy for other than a somewhat spoiled young soap opera Star who wants to “move on”. They make more money than most of us can dream about and receive many perks. His reps are probably telling him “get out now while you’re a hot property” and not to get trapped into the same kind of role – Age is everything in show business and most actors look to transition out of soap roles into Primetime television and movies. After a certain age, there aren’t as many casting opportunities offered to them and if they’re not careful they wind up going from one soap to another and that’s about it, not to suggest that there is anything wrong with that. But, most actors want the opportunity to explore other genres – I do not really fault the Producers for pretty much telling him that they’ve found a replacement since he’s evidently asking to leave the show anyway. It all depends on how you choose to view the situation.

right in the money Ted !

He was asked about his plan and he said he is planning to go back to school. He didn’t say he was leaving. He said he will like to finish college once his contact is up.

If DAYS is canceled, the Chandler Messy situation will only be a
contributing factor. Go learn about how soaps work, then comment.
You act like he was the reason for DAYS to stay on air; NUTS!

It’s all very well saying that it happens everyday and it’s the way of the world but that doesn’t make it right. It’s seems ppl r happy to roll over and accept being treated like crap no matter what your job is. U have to remember that massey is still pretty green in the way of how the industry works and I genuinely believe it was an accidental slip he made at the awards. I’m sorry but that was no excuse for the producers acting like a baby throwing his toys out of the pram. Whichever way u look at it they were unprofessional at their handling of massey.’s exit. Once again the bigwigs get away with acting like douche’s

Chandler Messy could not be allowed to go on and on about his
impending departure. That would take away from what matters
more; Days of our Lives. This way some are upset, but they know
the recast with all the publicity. It would be wrong for TPTB to sit
back and let Chandler Messy call the shots. If he was allowed to
stay the full term of his contract, then viewers would be hearing
about the upcoming exit till april. WAY TOO LONG!!!

Whut?! And it’s Massey, not Messy….

“WAY TOO LONG “would have been the FULL TERM of his contract not ad infinitim which he and the loyal viewers expected. How many two time Emmy winners does Days have, especially at Chandlers age?No, 4everDays you are strictly a shill for management and your hatred shows when you mention he spoiled Ken Corday”s birthday. Who Cares!!! I say dump DAYS>

‘pretty green’ he has a PR team who coach him in all of these deals..come on, he was a soap actor for 4 years now..not green, not a newbie anymore..he is not dumb, he knows how it works, give him some credit, please.

And what a PR team! I mean, in over two years, they didn’t even allow Chandler and Freddie to be in a joint interview – NOT ONE! And in the last year, they’ve never appeared anywhere together at events (except for the Emmys) or in photo-shoots. Someone royally screwed up!

The cast could give him a party on their own time. Even though the producers seem terrible to some of the fans, their primary concern is to keep the show on the air so the rest of the cast and crew have jobs.

bingo !

How many two time Emmy winners does Days have especially at Chandlers age? Nun, Chandler was excellent for this show, there should be no reason to kick him off!

I have no sympathy for Chandler. Before ever telling his bosses he was leaving, he decided to announce it to everyone else. They make it sound like he’s the 2nd coming of actors…WAY better actors/actresses have left the show and things continue on… Also, CM winning two Emmy’s doesn’t make him “vital” to DAYS, when he was the one who stated that he wanted to leave. The show has had other Emmy winning actresses/actors and they were let go. Hears to Guy making the role his own!

Daytime Emmys means nada..it is time to get it..CD is a good actor who can do something else and succeed in other mediums than daytime i have no doubt but these emmys are above all about backstage/behind the scene politics, popularity, connections not talent !

Honestly, Chandler was the best Will i have seen on this show! What is up with changing the character all the time!! I Loved Chandler He was amazing and he was a GREAT Actor! I want him back and i want him to stay, With alot of the casts leaving, Like Sami is supposed to be leaving at the end of her contract! Why, these people are what makes the Darn show, I believe it will lose people, I believe i probably wont be watching Days very Much anymore if i dont get into it, i always watched it because of sami, and will, and Nicole, but with how things are ending now, Ah! at least bring Bo, and Melanie, and some other people back!

Saw Days yesterday, after many weeks, because I heard Will and Sonny were back for a day.Don’t find the soap palatable without them and I agree with ME and LISA above. If I can figure out Chandlers last days I’ll tune it up but otherwise this is a weirdly uninteresting drama.Hey Chandler, what’s up? Hope you are doing fine.!!!

Greetings. I have been watching this show nearly all my life, all the way back to the 1960’s with Frances Reid and McDonald Carey. The show has had its ups and downs and many, many recasts over the years. All of the loyal fans who are in the same boat as I am have seen Roman Brady #1 (Wayne Northrop), be recast as Drake Hogestyn , and eventually morph into Roman Brady #3 (Josh Taylor), who by the way was originally cast as architect, Chris Kositchek! The “original” Roman (Wayne Northrup) later appeared on the show as a lunatic murderer and we, the viewing audience are asked by the show’s producers to “produce a little amnesia” and forget that we saw Northrup in the prominent Brady role about a decade earlier. We’ve seen children and adolescents sent to time warp boarding schools and as if by magic go from age 5 to 18 in 24-months’ time at the same time their parents are doing everything they can to stave off the aging process and maintain their coveted youth. This whole soap opera world is fantasy. Those of us who watch enjoy the fantasy. If we were to analyze each and every detail of the assorted story lines, recasts, etc., we would be tremendously disappointed with all of the inconsistencies that are presented to the viewing audience each and every day. If we can overcome such blatant recasts as Chris Kosticheck as the new Roman Brady and the original Roman Brady as the psychopath Dr. Alex North, surely one recast, as sad as it is, will not break us. We will continue to watch, the advertisers will continue to get fat, and life will go on. Perhaps one day Chandler Massey will return from his hiatus in “time warp” college and return as his own Uncle Bo or Cousin Shawn. (Don’t really mean that, just trying to make a point). My only hope is that the producers realize that their viewers have decent memories and these blatant inconsistencies in the storylines are not lost on most of us. They need to give their lifelong viewers a bit more credit for remembering that JJ Deveraux was born somewhere around 2004….Thanks for listening.

Boooo Corday!!! Much Love C.M.!

I as a fan of days of our lives since I was in high school I’m now 66 I feel that Chalimar Massey pro trayed will in the best ways that it could be protrayed I don’t like the fact of people replacing my characters in the Soap that I love so if it is not broke don’t fix it I can’t imagine anyone else playing Will not with Sunny bring him back

Talk about getting hit when you are down. It has been hard enough tuning in every day since Bo is no longer there. I have been watching Days for over 20 years and is something I share with my 21 year old daughter. We are loyal fans wo loved Bo and love Wll. DAYS PLEASE STOP!!!!

It really sucks. It’s not going to be the same, Will was a great actor. I will miss him. Don’t know what days are thinking…..

I just started following this show after I learned of Will and Sonny. Found a site that had a complete selection of the stories that Will and Sonny are in. Its been so incredible watching the episodes. I loved the characters and especially Will and Sonny and how they are together, both as actors and as characters. At the award ceremony where Chandler Massey was presented his award He was so incredible that He said that it wasn’t fair as it was not just all him but also Freddie Smith’s award. To say that on stage was incredible of him to do and I think it was great. They make a great pair. I have just finished watching all the episodes and now I learn that Chandler has decided to go back to school and I support his decision. I totally support him. I will miss you Chandler. No one can play Will like He can. I do not understand ABC and how they treated Chandler Massey. I would love more than anything to see Candler and Freddie back on screen again. They have a chemistry that just works when they are acting together. So I think that its great that the story of Will and Sonny is continuing but its just not the same and hard to watch. At least Freddie Smith and the others still with have jobs. Its got to be weird for them too. Guy Wilson will not ever really be as good as Chandler for me but thats just my opinion. Chandler is just a really kind nice guy. He will be missed.

First of all, I am extremely disappointed in the way you think you can treat people like Chandler, his cast and fans. I am stunned that you would consider removing him from the show. He is an asset to the show, Sonny, Gabi, and Ariana. They were perfect! You people as writers are taking off so many of your amazing actors and actresses anymore, I’m not sure who will be left in the near future. You may want to start thinking about your ratings. I have watched Days since I was in college, approx. 33 years. I can’t remember so many changes taking place in such a short period of
time. I am disgusted! Will is one in a million! Your loss Days writers! 🙁

I totally agree with you Susan P. . Also I think that the show is pretty much loosing some of its best people. I started watching the show a few months ago and I only watched when Will and Sonny were on. They are awesome in my view. I am gay myself and have not shared the truth with anyone in my life so I just felt an extra connection to the story with Will and Sonny. I have been trying to tell my best friend but its scary. Chandler Massey is a favourite actor of mine and I believe he is a very talented and respectable person. Freddie Smith as well is a great guy. They were so natural together on screen and appeared to really enjoy their work. After watching the episodes on you tube I got totally addicted to watching them, just to find out what would happen next. I then learned that the show was a current show and I was so excited that I would be able to watch live for a long time. One night I was watching the christening episode of Ariana and suddenly there was different guy with Sonny and they kissed. I was shocked. Then I googled to see what had happened to Chandler and was so angry to learn what had happened. The way he was treated and let go so suddenly was so upsetting. I can only imagine how he would have felt. Also how Freddie Smith and his fellow actors and actresses would have felt. The writers would probably have fired any of them too if they spoke out or talked truthfully about how they felt. So now I am a huge fan of Chandler and his groups music, Orchard Road. Also I totally understand and respect his wishes to peruse an education and other interests. I will always be a fan of Chandler his and Freddie too. But I have tried to watch the show now with the new guy and I just can’t get into it anymore. Its sad because I would rather it continue so Freddie has a role and a job. But if the whole situation was handled better and I knew that Chandler was not just pushed out the door then things would be better.

I really think it sucks the way Chandler was treated to his exit. He was about sixty percent reason to watch the show. Now with Sami also leaving ……….guess I will be watching THE TALK !!!

The Talk is cheap!!!

Don’t like Guy AT ALL. Sorry, but he doesn’t compare to Massey.

Days Of Our Lives

Stephen Schnetzer Talks On His Return to Days of our Lives and Working with Susan Seaforth Hayes In Emotional Episodes

Who says you can’t go home again? In the case of Another World favorite, Stephen Schnetzer (ex-Cass Winthrop), he has proven that it is true, and you can go back to your soap roots and where it all started for you.

Last week on April 11th, Schnetzer, along with several other key returns were on set at Days of our Lives taping all-new episodes of the Peacock streaming soap opera, centering on the funeral of Doug Williams (the late Bill Hayes), and as part of the iconic soap opera’s 15,000th episode.

Stephen is reprising his first daytime role as Steve Olson, the brother of Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes). The last time Schnetzer appeared on a DAYS set was during his one and only run on the show from 1978 to 1980. Clearly, viewers will be in for some very emotional scenes when Steve returns to Salem to be there for his sister, Julie in her time of need. In real-life, Susan has been going through her own grief, having just lost Bill back on January 12th at the age of 98.

Photo: NBC

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Stephen during the 15K episode celebration ceremony, and during a break from taping the gut-wrenching funeral scenes, to get his thoughts on being part of these highly-anticipated moments that will air later this year in December. Here’s what he shared with us below.

What has this been like for you to work with Susan Seaforth Hayes after all of these years?

STEPHEN: She’s a dream and she’s so bright. We ran lines yesterday and we ended up just visiting for about 45 minutes and just catching up and telling tales about each other’s career. She even dropped off the autobiography that she and Bill did. And being back here at DAYS, every time I turn a corner, there’s another familiar face. When I was on the show 40 more years ago, a bunch of the guys, played softball on a team together. This is really a trip down memory lane as I knew it would be.

Photo: JPI

Taping Doug’s funeral must be a hard day for Susan. Are you checking in with her to help hold her up through this?

STEPHEN: I am and I’m checking in with Amy Shaughnessy (Susan’s assistant), and she’s holding her up more than anybody. We’re there for each other.

There will obviously be some major hankie-inducing moments when Steve comes back to Salem to console his sister.

STEPHEN: Oh, wait till you see it in December. It’s going to be great.

Were you surprised you got this call to come back to the show decades later?

STEPHEN: It was out of the blue! I was completely surprised. They should have called me decades ago! That’s what surprised me. When Another World went down, I thought I’d land somewhere else and it never happened. That was more of a surprise.

Photo: JPI

Cass is such an identifiable character for you. As well, you and Linda Dano (ex-Felicia Gallant) are so synonymous together as best friends Cass and Felicia from Another World. When fans heard you were reprising your role as Steve Olson on DAYS, they are now hoping there will be more of you on the show to come.

STEPHEN: Steven Olson is a real “Cassian “character. I cut my teeth on Steve Olson and that’s how Cass was introduced. He was kind of a roguish charmer. And then when the character stuck for Another World, they rehabilitated me, and turned me into one of the shows heroes. And that’s what would’ve happened if I stayed as Steve Olson probably. So, Steve is the ‘pre-Cass’, Cass.

Photo: JPI

As the story goes, you originally decided to leave Days of our Lives?

STEPHEN: I was never on contract. I was doing a day and a half a week and I got a Broadway play directed by Franco Zeffirelli starring Joan Plowright and Frank Finlay. I was able to it as I didn’t have to break a contract or anything. I cut loose and went back to New York for that.

How well did you get to know Bill Hayes during your first time around on DAYS?

STEPHEN: My first episode was with Bill and Susan, as her long lost brother coming into Salem. They were so good to me. They were so kind. I had been doing eight years of classical repertory theater, never been in front of a camera. I tell everybody, it took me longer than any other actor I’ve ever seen to get comfortable in front of a camera. And they were very supportive at that time in my career. Coming back to honor Bill now in 2024, and to be see Susan, I am just so happy to be here.

Looking forward to seeing the scenes between Stephen and Susan Seaforth Hayes come December and Doug’s funeral and surrounding episodes? Do you hope that DAYS might bring the character of Steve Olson back for a longer stay? Comment below.
