One of daytime drama’s most beloved and revered actresses, Elizabeth Hubbard, has passed away. The legendary Daytime Emmy-winning star was best known for her performances as Dr. Althea Davis on The Doctors and Lucinda Walsh on As the World Turns.

Elizabeth’s son, Jeremy Bennett, broke the heartbreaking news via his Facebook page, sharing, “I’m sorry to say with a broken heart mi mum passed over the weekend. Thank you for being an unmovable rock that guided me through life. I will try to honour your memory for as long as I live.”

Hubbard received 11 Daytime Emmy nominations throughout her career on the soaps. Of her 11 Daytime Emmy nods, Hubbard earned eight for her towering work as Lucinda Walsh on CBS’ As the World Turns, a role she played from 1984 till the the beloved soap went off the air in September of 2010.

However, Liz was the very first actress to win the Outstanding Lead Actress award in 1974 for her star-turn as Dr. Althea Davis on NBC’s The Doctors.  She followed that two years later winning a Daytime Emmy for the TV movie, First Ladies Dairies: Edith Wilson.

Liz was born to be an actress and graduated from the distinguished Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, England,  She got her soap start with roles on Guiding Light, then Edge of Night, and eventually joined The Doctors as Althea.  She played the role from 1964-1969, then again from 1970-1978 and one last time from 1981-1982.  After The Doctors was cancelled, she went over to One Life to Live for a short run in the role of Estelle Chadwick.

Later, everything changed in Oakdale when As the World Turns wisely cast Hubbard as Lucinda Walsh, a defining role in her career.  Lucinda was a tough-as-nails corporate business woman with a past, who guarded her heart, and carried on tumultuous relationships with her children and the men in her life.

Elizabeth’s final appearance on-screen was in the web series Anacostia in 2015 that reunited Hubbard with her ATWT on-screen adopted daughter, Lily, played by her dear friend, Martha Byrne.

We will continue to provide updates and reactions in the soap community on the death of Elizabeth Hubbard in the days ahead.

Share your condolences and remembrances for the great Elizabeth Hubbard vis the comment section.  But first, we share the last times we had the opportunity to connect with Liz.  One, on the red carpet at the Daytime Emmys along with Martha Bryne in 2018, and her participation as one of our ‘Doctors’ alums during our pandemic game show, ‘Soap-Opera-Know-It-All’, where she was gracious enough to be a part of the episode.

A huge loss in daytime. East Coast soap operas birthed unique talent that is unlike what the West Coast maintains. Elizabeth Hubbard, much like the late Lisa Brown & Beverlee McKinsley, created not one but TWO outstanding characters in the American daytime scene, and her impact will be forever felt. May Dame Hubbard rest in both peace and power!

You are right on when you look back most of the daytime people who moved on to movies etc came from New York it was a tragic day when they shut the doors down on New York soaps

Couldn’t say it better, lost another great one. Glad I was able to watch that era of soaps, when BM left AW had a fit and never watched the show again.

She was so great as Lucinda! I wish I had seen her on the Doctors.

If you have Retro TV….You can.! She recently returned for her second stint on the show.

This is so sad, Elizabeth Hubbard was a gifted wonderful actress. Loved her on As The World Turns, as Lucinda Walsh. May she RIP

One of the unquestioned greats of daytime.. never a dull moment or patented gesture. She always seemed “in the moment” and fresh. I also enjoy seeing her in a small role in my favorite movie, 1980’s “Ordinary People”. She only has a couple of scenes but has good billing in the credits and is a believable friend of Mary Tyler Moore’s difficult character. A real loss, but what a legacy.

She and Beverlee Mckenzie were the greatest of all time. Lucinda Walsh was my all time favorite daytime character. This is a great loss to the daytime community and all those who love the soaps. Thank you for all the years of incredible performances great lady.

You are Absolutely Right! Elizabeth and Beverlee could make a dull day on a soap, momentous…they knew how to make the dialogue sound exciting…they would make any scene greater and their co stars would react more than they ever would with Any one else…I loved Elizabeth’s sparring with All of Oakdale but, especially with Susan,John,Ida,Craig & Emma…those afternoons of watching her mold her craft will never be replaced…TG for Martha Byrne and her close bond with her TV screen mom…what a loss for her and the World…RIP Elizabeth Hubbard

A wonderful and talented actress. She led a wonderful life and she will be missed by many. At least we will have her with her on screen for memories.

A force to be reckoned with — I mean seriously. As Althea, she was classy, elegant and totally credible as as a working professional female doctor who was YEARS ahead of her time. As Lucinda, she was simply fierce and fabulous! Ms. Hubbard took many prisoners: namely, her audiences, who were totally captured by so many of her riveting performances. Truly one of the queens of the genre when I first began watching soaps. Along with Helen Gallagher, Kathryn Hays, Jacquie Courtney, Louise Shaffer, Marie Masters, Maeve McGuire, Jeanne Cooper, and Mary Stuart, she was from a constellation of luminous leading ladies and powerhouse actresses I’ll will never forget.

Lucinda Walsh and Alexandra Spaulding
2 incredible soap matriarchs
Liz Hubbard was absolutely the daytime modern woman in Soaps
Such an era from the 80s into the 90s and til the finale in 2010 of ATWTs
Wishing her family and loved ones peace and love. Elizabeth brought such fun and joy and DRAMA to our living rooms for so many years!

I had the privilege of meeting her and she was so gracious. I was expecting more of Lucinda. Ha! Ms. Hubbard was so distinguished in every role I ever saw her play. She is a treasure for the soap community and will continue to be for all the ages. My condolences to her family and friends.

We have lost another soap legend. They don’t make them like Ms. Hubbard anymore. The previous poster is right. There was something about NY soap actors/actors in general. Maybe, they came from the theater world, but what they did appeared effortless.

I think Mary Fickett was the first Lead Actress winner, Elizabeth Hubbard the second, and Susan Flannery the third.

Mary Fickett won her award in a daytime category on the main (now Primetime) Emmy Award show, the year before the Daytime Emmys got their own telecast. Hubbard won hers on the first Daytime specific award show.

Very, very sad news. Hubbard was my all-time favorite soap actress. I could have watched an hour of Hubbard simply reading a phone book. My prayers go out to her family. I hope they find some comfort knowing the joy Hubbard brought to some many viewers over so many years.

This loss really does hurt.

Mark Rydell, As the World Turns

Mark Rydell, one of the most highly-lauded motion picture directors in Hollywood, and who got his start acting on the soaps, has died. He was 97.

The news of his passing came from Bette Midler, who starred in The Rose, which Rydell also directed. Midler took to her Instagram on Friday, August 14 and shared the news.

Bette expressed, “Mark Rydell, the director or my first film, The Rose, died this morning. He was an actor of note before he became a director, and I was so lucky to have met him when I did; he taught me so much on The Rose and later on For The Boys. Two Oscars nominations both because of him. He was the actor’s whisperer; just a few words was all it took to understand what was needed.”

As soap fans know, Rydell got his first big break playing Jeff Baker on As the World Turns. The popular character was involved on-screen with then star of the CBS soap opera, Rosemary Prinz (ex-Penny Hughes). He stayed in the role from 1956-1962. When the producers wanted him to re-up his contract, Rydell decided to leave, and so the writers killed-off the character of Jeff in a car crash. Before ATWT, Rydell played Walt Johnson on The Edge of Night.

MARK RYDELL DIRECTED SOME OF HOLLYWOOD’S BIGGEST STARS

After a busy career in primetime television roles, Mark began to direct in 1967 with the controversial feature, The Foxes. Because of his acting beginnings, Rydell was known as an actors director. Thus, began an enduring career in Hollywood directing films with some of movies biggest stars at the time including: Steve McQueen in 1969’s The Reivers, John Wayne in 1972’s The Cowboys, and James Caan and Marsha Mason in 1973’s Cinderella Liberty. In 1976, he also directed the pilot episode of the hit ABC domestic drama Family.

It was in 1979, that Rydell directed Bette Midler in her first feature film and lead role in The Rose, in which she was Oscar-nominated, and by 1981, the former soap star was directing the likes of Katherine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Jane Fonda in On Golden Pond, for which he received his only Academy Award nomination as a director. He followed with The River (1984), For the Boys (1991), and many more through the years.

Rydell was previously married  from 1962 to 1973 to Joanne Linville who had appeared on Guiding Light, The Goddess, and 1976’s film version of a A Star Is Born. The couple had two children, Amy and Christopher. Later, a second marriage to Esther Rydell produced his son, Alexander, before ending in divorce.

Survivors include Rydell’s three children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Sad to hear of the news of the passing of one of the great directors of our time, Mark Rydell? Do you remember him as Jeff Baker on As the World Turns? Let us know via the comment section.

AS THE WORLD TURNS CAST SHARES REMEMBRANCES OF SCOTT BRYCE

Over the last few weeks heartfelt condolences on the loss of Scott have poured including from: Finn Carter (ex-Sierra, ATWT), Martha Byrne (ex-Lily, ATWT), Melanie Smith (ex-Emily, ATWT) and  many more.

In fact, Bryne made note to TV Insider following the loss of As the World Turns co-star, of just how memorable Bryce’s work with the late Elizabeth Hubbard’s work as Lucinda was, and their unforgettable pairing; “The energy between them, their dynamic, all the play, fun, and the intensity just jumped through the screen. Most actors wouldn’t go down to set just to watch other performers. They’d stay in their rooms. I would go and just watch them work.”

The livestream will be broadcast courtesy of the The Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Westport, Connecticut.

We all loved Scott Bryce and his powerful performances as Craig on As the World Turns and his body of work in primetime television as well. Now, it’s time to say our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones. Comment below.

Lucie Arnaz Luckinbill, Bryce’s longtime friend and former co-star announced his death via her Facebook under an hour ago (in a post that has now been deleted, but see below). Arnaz expressed, “a wonderful actor, a beautiful man and a terrific husband and father, Scott Bryce, passed tonight. I am going to miss his eyes, his smile, his wit, his brain, his intelligence, his talent, his bravery, his laugh and his hugs. Dearest Jodi, dear Jackson, he’s watching over you now from a place of pure joy and will always be your guide. But, I hate these goodbyes. Rest in peace you marvelous, magnificent man”.

Previously, Bryce was diagnosed with Stage 3 esophageal and stomach cancer back in October of 2024. He had credited early detection as a vital part of his journey. He had underwent medical treatment and had since reported being “on the mend.”

SCOTT BRYCE’S RUN AS CRAIG MONTGOMERY WAS MEMORABLE

However, Lucie Arnaz shared on her Facebook post in the comment thread section when asked, that Scott’s cancer had returned. She has appeared in two projects with Bryce, the Indie film, The Pack and the TV series, Sons and Daughters.

Jackson Bryce, Scott’s beloved son, shared a beautiful tribute to his father after his passing on his Instagram where he shared that, “What began as stage three esophageal cancer eventually spread and became brain tumors that took his life away from him.”

Scott was the son of actor Ed Bryce, who was best-known for his role on the soaps as Bill Bauer on Guiding Light from 1959 to 1983.  On As the World Turns, Scott had a significant run as Craig Montgomery, and at one point was initially paired on-screen with Meg Ryan (ex-Betsy Stewart). Bryce had appeared on the CBS soap opera from 1982–1991, 1993–1994, and 2007–2008.

AS THE WORLD TURNS CO-STAR PAYS TRIBUTE

On As the Word Turns, Scott’s on-screen romance was with Finn Carter, who played Sierra Esteban was a fan favorite for longtime viewers.

Carter expressed her grief on Instagram following the news of Bryce’s passing sharing, “My sadness knows no bounds. My gratitude for Scott knows even fewer. Scott was the best husband a woman could ask for. As an actor he was fearless, kind, generous and forever looking for ways to grow. And what a sense of humor! It is so difficult to write this as I can not stop crying . Scott , you were a gift that I did not deserve and one the world was freely given . All of my love to you – ah, just can’t stop crying. See you soon ( not too soon) and look forward to recalling our days on As The World Turns . You patiently taught me so much . XO”

It was during his initial run that Scott received two Daytime Emmy nominations for his performances as the manipulative Craig Montgomery. Bryce was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in both 1986 and 1987.

Bryce exited ATWT in February of 2008 and by December of that year, Jon Lindstrom, (Beyond the Gates, General Hospital) was brought in as the final Craig from 2008-2010 as the soap went off the air. Over the years, Hunt Block and Jeffrey Meek also played the role of Craig.

FROM OAKDALE TO PRIMETIME

In addition, Scott appeared in numerous episodic comedy and drama series throughout his career with roles in: Murphy Brown, The Facts of Life, ER, Law & Order, Reba and Sex and the City and Blue Bloods, The Blacklist, Homeland, 30 Rock to name but a few. Scott is survived by his wife Jodi Stevens and their son, Jackson.

Michael Fairman TV will bring you further updates on this developing story.
