Days Of Our Lives
Dick Van Dyke and Drake Hogestyn Deliver Heart-Tugging Scenes as Days of our Lives’ Father and Son are Reunited
On Friday’s episode of Days of our Lives, Dick Van Dyke reminded us all why he is a national treasure. At 97-years-old, he can still pull off great performances, and now he can add his role on Days of our Lives to that list.
Van Dyke had never appeared on a soap opera, previously, but due to his friendship with Drake Hogestyn (John), this once and a lifetime guest-star turn has turned into quite the memorable one.
For DAYS fans who guessed that Van Dyke’s ‘mystery man’ would turn out to be John Black’s biological father, you were correct! In story, it now turns out the real Timothy Robicheaux is Van Dyke’s amnesiac war veteran, who formerly was being called, “Joseph Bell.”

With so many twists and turns in the life of John Black, and so many confusing stories through the years, it is revealed through a series of flashbacks that during the Korean war and while in combat, Joseph Bell’s dog tags were switched by a soldier who left him there to die. This key piece of intel is told by Bell while sitting with Marlena in her office, along with John. Later, John reveals a pair of dog tags around his neck, and that Bell’s real name is Timothy Robicheaux. John says “All this time, you’ve been searching for your son. Sir, your search is over.”
Marlena (Deidre Hall) tells Timothy he was lost in the VA system after he was severely wounded in the war. John didn’t know much about his upbringing, except he was born on a rural farm, and Timothy came from a farm.
As his memory is further triggered, Timothy remembers his wife’s name was Maude and she had their baby after he was lost in the war. Timothy feels sorry for the hard life John has had to live. John informs his father that Maude died a few years ago.

With all the sorrow and the pain, they have endured in their lifetimes, John and Timothy are just so happy they have found each other, at long last. In an emotional moment, John shares all the versions of himself and identities he has had along the way, but credits Marlena and Timothy for him being the man he is today. This is followed, by yet, another touching moment when Timothy and John hug for the first time as father and son. Timothy vows that they will never lose each other again.
Through these scenes, Van Dyke played the beats of the story so convincingly, and made us feel for this man who finally finds the son he has longed for over years. While this brought yet another change to John Black’s history and back-story, it is a welcome one. Finally, John gets a decent man for a dad, not the evil Yo Ling, when all is said and done.
So, what did you think of the scenes between Dick Van Dyke and Drake Hogestyn as father and son, who find each other after decades of being apart? Let us know in the comment section, but first check out next week’s promo for DAYS where Timothy meets the rest of his family including his grandson, Paul Narita (Christopher Sean).
I LOVE DICK VAN DYKE! He was always my favorite actor. I am glad he is on DOOL. I wish he would stay on DOOL!
I love it!!!! It’s the happiest thing that has happened to Days in a long time! Dick VanDyke is remarkable for 97 years old! He can stay there forever!
It was a believable and emotional scean not often see on daytime TV. “Believable” being the key word. Van Dyke was stellar.
Great ending for John and his dad!
I love the scenes with dick and drake .I really loved the scenes with Susan and Bill. Or I should say with Doug And Susan and John
I really thought in the beginning that he would(or should) be John’s father. Love Days of Our Lives and Loved Ðick Van Dyke being on the shore. Hope he comes on regularly.
I loved the show with actor Dick Van Dyke on their as John Black’s dad. He was very wonderful and amazing and awesome actor.
Hi..where did they exit Timothy after he and John reunited? (Where is he now?) I must have missed something
I just started watching DOOL a couple of years ago after seeing it in the hospital waiting room. So I’m not familiar John’s backstory or Dick Van Dyke. But this was such a touching moment and I hope to see more of Timothy and John
I actually got goosebumps watching these scenes Friday!
What I have noticed on all soap sites constant remarks about Days and GH! So I am curious very curious why Bold and Y&R still hold one and two spots! Just a question ! Anyway not watched in a long time but kudos to DH he always delivers good man
Not watched in forever but all I know is Drake is the nicest guy in daytime and he is also underrated
I love Dick Van Dyke I that the show was great. Loved it.
I loved it!! Great performances!! I love Dick Van Dyke!! I have always been a huge fan since The Dick Van Dyke show. I have been a fan of Days Of Our Lives for almost 50 years and of Drake Hogestyn aka John Black. I congratulate Peacock bringing these two actors together for a terrific storyline and pairing. I watch DOOL everyday!! Thank you Peacock ❤️
I watched the episode with my sister and we both literally cried. It was so touching to see John finally learn his true family history.
Brought tears to my eyes for both John and real father who couldn’t have done a better job. This is how Days should be. Not raunchy sex scenes by the same sex..
So happy to watch a heartfelt scene and hope to see more moral scenes in the future..
Exactly
Right. The same sex surely bothers you way more than the “raunch.” Expecting a 100% heterosexual soap opera in 2023 is bizarre. Moral, LOL.
Loved it. I hope he stays. He is do good.
Great story line,,,,it’s l about time there was a happy ending on this show. Keep Dick Van Dyke on and continue with more stories surrounding him .
I’ve watched Days since year 1. The tribute to John Aniston, Maggie’s anniversary, Dick Van Dyke made for some of the best viewing ever on Days. The roller-coaster of emotions was an awesome trip. Well done Days! This is what you do best. Thank you.
Just love the father & son reunion; finally finding each other, after all those years!
Still think Tommy Horton would have been the better story. Does it really matter if they rewrite who John’s father was for the 666th time, if his mother was still a psycho?
Great story line with Dick Van Dyke would be great to have him for good
Rottentomatoes in his bio says he “was an actor” please tell them to correct that!
I love Jon’s dad perfect person to play the part.. Days of Our Lives my favorite all time soap been watching it since I was conceived! Lol
❤️Cindy
Being 97 yrs 0ld God didn’t promise us but 70 yrs and being 97 and in his right and still acting and just brought tears to my eyes to see John finely reunite with his long lost dad days our lives made history I loved that reunion,I been watching days every since high school, and I’m 63 years old.days is the only soap opera I still watch today.
I loved it. Evertime I looked into Dick’s blue eyes, it reminded me of my 94 year old mother!! He’s so amazing!!
This story is very touching and I love Dick Van Dyke
I thought it was great! John finally having the father he deserves. And, looks wise, John and Timothy really could be father and son! Great job DOOL
