DYNASTY Confirms Cristal Swap With A Twist; Ana Brenda Contreras Joins The Cast

So it is official.  Nathalie Kelley will not be returning to season 2 of CW’s Dynasty.  The actress revealed it herself in an interview with E! News that shocked fans of the show, but at that time there was no official comment from the show. Now we know why!

This morning at the CW’s executive session at the TCA summer press tour, it was revealed that Kelley’s exit is all part of a soapy twist!

In story, Cristal was last seen in the season finale of season one in dire circumstances… she was shot, and then trapped in fire.  Enter telenovela star, Ana Brenda Contreras who is joining the cast for season 2 as the real Cristal Flores! .

CW president Mark Pedowitz shared as to the reason for the recast: “It’s a wild soap, these are things you do on a soap.”  He said the decision to reveal a different Cristal was made last midseason.

Pedowitz also noted: “We have plans for other characters too.  (Showrunner) Sallie (Patrick) has fun twist and turns in store.”

So, what do you think of the plot twist which ushers out Cristal 2, but bring in the original Cristal 1?  Comment below.

This will be interesting to watch play out! I love this show and Nathalie Kelley was amazing but I will give this girl a chance. While we are talking new characters can we bring on a. The real Adam and b. Amanda Carrington? Marci Miller (soon to be ex-Abby, Days) or Chloe Lanier (soon to be ex-Nelle, GH) would both be great choices!

I am glad they aren’t killing off the character and this might be interesting. Can’t wait for the show to come back on and explain all of this.

Really? So unnecessary! Recast a main character?

So Ana Brenda Contretras is the original Cristal then why wasn’t she seen in the season 1 but season 2 rather. Anyway I love to see her here coz she’s my favorite actress in the telenovela series.

I really liked the Cristal played by Natalie Kelley and am not happy with the twist. I don’t think I will be watching now.

It’s kind of a head-jerk to me. Nathalie Kelley was great as Cristal so I don’t understand why they’re calling Anna Brend Contreras the “real” Cristal. I mean, Sami, her sister and brother-in-law; none of them ever mentioned that she looked different from the “real” Cristal. Will wait and see, I guess.

Maybe Cristal was kidnapped half way through the season and given plastic surgery so if she ever resurfaced it would be hard for her to convince others that she was Cristal and that the imposter wasn’t? Have to wait and see how it pans out!

Sounds like the show is reversing course on the character and is trying to make it seem like it was all part of the plan when it clearly was not. Treating your viewers like they’re dumb is never a good idea.

Dynasty

‘Dynasty’ Recasts and Departures Addressed By EP and CW President

On Sunday at the CW’s TCA Summer Press Tour, the changing and revolving door of cast changes was bantered about during the network’s executive session. As fans of the Dynasty reboot know, the role of Cristal has now been recast twice.

First, following Nathalie Kelley’s exit at the end of the first season, Ana Brenda Contreras took over the role for season 2, but now, as had been previously reported, she is being replaced by actress Daniella Alonso ahead of season 3.  Contreras was said to be leaving for personal reasons.

And if that was not confusing enough, there was the exit of James MacKay as Steven Carrington when back in November of 2018 he announced via his Instagram: “While Steven had a choice to leave, unfortunately I didn’t. There’s a lot of decisions involved in making television, and sometimes they just don’t go your way and you have to live with it.”  However, MacKay returned to the show on recurring status making a few appearances since that time.

Then, there was the exit of Nicollette Sheridan, who left for personal reasons as well, in the key role of Alexis Carrington and who was replaced by Elizabeth Gilles who apparently now is playing a dual role on the show that of Fallon and Alexis, but is she moving forward?  And then .. behind the scenes the original reboot showrunner Sallie Patrick made her exit to go into development ahead of season 2; where she was replaced by Josh Reims.

CW President Mark Pedowitz had this to say to the press about the cast departures: “We hoped (Ana Contreras) would continue but she had personal issues we had no control over.  There’s no dirt to be found.”  Pedowitz was dismissing a theory that there was a bigger underlining issue going on behind the scenes.

Dynasty executive producer Josh Schwartz added to Deadline:“Some (casting changes) were made for creative decisions, some were made for personal reasons, and just a confluence of things that happened in succession but it’s not part of a larger pattern. And on the showrunner front, Sallie ran the show for two seasons on a 22-episode model.  It was always her plan to pass the baton after a couple of seasons. Josh is an excellent and experienced showrunner.”

So, what do you think about all the casting changes at Dynasty and we are only at the start of the 3rd season.  Comment below.
