GENERAL HOSPITAL: Carly and Sonny Come To An Understanding Of Their Complex Relationship!

On Monday’s episode of General Hospital, Laura Wright (Carly) and Maurice Benard (Sonny) proved why they can continually make Carly and Sonny two of the most complex characters in a unique relationship on daytime soaps.

Sonny and Carly got into an honest, tangible discussion about their relationship and where they stand, after everything that has just happened on Pier 54 with the arms deal, Morgan’s (Bryan Craig) manic episode, Kiki’s (Hayley Erin) shooting, and Sonny lying to Carly that he is not truly wheelchair bound, but can walk.   That deception though, ultimately saved the day at Julexis wedding when Sonny took down Dixon.

An emotional Carly tells Sonny that she hates that his business makes him lie to her and their kids, yet she’s not angry with him, but actually at herself!  She feels she’s looked the other way too often, and yet she enjoys the power that Sonny yields.  Carly reveales that her biggest fear is the next bullet could hit him, or one of the kids, and that the cycle of violence they find themselves in never ending.   But Carly also admits that Sonny makes being bad and committing crimes look sexy.   She is aware that it is wrong and that violence should end, but Sonny cannot promise her that, as he will always do what he has to for their children, his family, and for Carly.

Sonny wonders if Carly is going to walk out on him.  She says, what would be the point?  They would find other people like she did with Jax, and he did with countless other women, but they would still long for each other.   In the end, Carly feels like Sonny heard what she has to say.  He smiles with his dimples, something Carly admits she has always has been unable to resist, and the two reach and understanding of their relationship and their past, their mistakes, and their hopes for the future.

It was nice to see an adult conversation between CarSon.  What did you think of the performances of Laura Wright and Maurice Benard in the episode? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

It was great! Again, the writers are injecting dialogue and adding depth. The last writing regimen would have NEVER wrote these scenes between CARSON. The dialogue was true to each others characters. Carly wants Sonny to clean up his act and Sonny says he will see what he can do. In other words, its never going to change and Carly hit the nail on the head when she stated there was no reason to leave him since they would only hurt others and eventually end up back together. Great stuff!

I agree with every word you said Timmm…Really well written for Carly & Sonny.
Getting to understand the inner workings of this relationship was great.. Never
before have we gotten this close-up & personal…Laura Wright hit a home run!

Laura Wright has been on fire! Is she nominated for an Emmy? I hope so. She has really had a good 12 months but then again, she is always steady and she appreciates where she is and is kind to us fans.

These scenes just made me hate them even more, they both make me sick to my stomach. I think Carly needs to spend more time raising Jocelyn.

Thank you for posting!! I feel the same way about these two and most everything Corinthos. Detest the way the writers try to glorify these two and their two sons. The Corinthos characters always come up smelling like roses no matter they do – including murder.

Um, Lil Angel — Jocelyn is not a Corinthos so her importance in the grand scheme of things is pretty much nil. Why should Carly waste a millisecond of her time caring for a child not produced with a criminal when she can dote and fawn over the child produced as a result of Sonny having grown up sexy times with Ava on the crypt of the man he murdered?

Boggles the mind, doesn’t it, Alan? Lol. Why, indeed?

Dont forget to bash Jax. He is a deadbeat dad!

Yes, Timmm, in the same way that Frisco is…..through the whims of the showrunners who don’t see fit to have either of these characters visiting Port Charles to be part of their children’s lives.

These types of conversations where writers delve into why might not have the excitement value of shoot out, but they draw me into as a viewer, eager to listen to some real dialogue that has some depth and meaning behind it. Over at Y&R, my ears bleed listening characters scream out the same one liners every day ie. Victor– “Billy boy is no good” Summer ” I don’t want to be caught in the middle” Nikki ” You gone too far this time Victor” Phyllis ” He has to be pay” over and over and over– so thank you GH for reminding me what drama is like when it goes into the motivation of the characters and my ears thank you too.

Laura was exceptional. When Carly isn’t being annoying the character can be great.

Your RIGHT Jonboy… When she’s calm and collected she makes sense,
which motivates us to listen.

This was just another reworded conversation they’ve had a thousand times. Carly realized their culpability in the terrible things that happen due to the mob, Sonny once again said he’d try to limit collateral damage and would protect his family. As he has promised for decades, and has always had the same results. Granted, I guess it was nice seeing them have a repeated conversation but with calmer demeanors, but nothing has changed, nor will it ever.

This is why GH is always on fire. Many dislike the constant focus on Sonny and Carly but I love this relationship because it is not about fake hero worship of each other. They both know each others weak spots and know about their personality flaws. Carly hates what Sonny does for work but loves the man she sees. Sonny knows what he does decimates his wife but he also knows it defines who he is to himself. He loves Carly like no other woman. Every time he is with another woman he is bent on proving to himself that he can wash this lady out of his system. And it always gets destroyed because he knows he can’t quite make it in the world without her. I love this couple because they are human. They are flawed in character, they are weak in parts but together they satisfy a need that is not understood by outsiders. They are the epitome of a real couple. Love is there. Family is there but also the silent understanding that not one other person, for Carly or Sonny, would put up with what they do to others and to each other. They truly belong together. I don’t know if this defines “star crossed lovers” but it does define the meaning of the phrase, “for every person there is a match”. Whether its by heaven or hell is for each individual person to consider. I love GH so much for how they portray the frailty and strength of this couple. Laura Wright and Maurice Benard know these characters so well. Kudos to both of them. Thank you for a great performance and for continuing to portray all that Sonny and Carly are. God I love this show.

I love Sonny and Carly they are my favorite couple in daytime

I appreciate the attempt by the writers to explain their relationship, and I think much of what was said is plausible. Unfortunately, I am long past caring.

And also unfortunately, although I applaud the attempt to do a better job of defining who these two characters are and why they act as they do, what really needs to be explained is not why Carly and Sonny are attracted to one another, but why they aren’t total pariahs in Port Charles but are instead more or less accepted in Port Charles society. That’s the crux of the problem for most of us who are tired of All Things Corinthos–not a failure to understand Sonny and Carly’s complicated relationship.

All in all, an attempt to explore the characters a little more deeply can’t be a bad thing, but in this case, it leaves a bigger stone unturned. Maybe that’s coming, but I kind of doubt it.

(And why do I still think that if Brenda came back and made a credible play for Sonny, he’d still abandon Carly in a heartbeat?)

Yes. Yes, and yes.

Because Brenda Barrett is Sonny’s true achilles heel. Vanessa Marcil needs to come back in my opinion. Even if Michelle Stafford (who I enjoy), and Rebecca Budig have to leave. She’s the true ratings draw and with the reentrance of her and Jax would set Port Charles ablaze

MT

NICE ! on … Brenda and Jax returning…. THEY, would, eclipse… Sonny and Carly

period

i’d like to see Brenda and Jax returning ; as a couple… and totally diss ; Sonny … and Carly

I just don’t see the point in Sonny and Carly; period

all the touting… and frontburner … and threads… and interviews… and guest spots on TV shows… do not make… a worthwhile must see couple

geez louise.. what more proof do you need… do they even show these two having sex….. REAL SEXUAL ENERGY… with appetite and gusto… it’s the lame ole candles and flowers and wine…

everything between these two is precursor… already spelled out… with their longdrawn out history… that Sarah Brown and Tamara Brown eclipsed Maurice Benard

so anything thereafter… is retread with .. CARLY loud annoying self and Sonny way too much on the dialogue about his “pharaoh like six shooter” or what have you… his menacing leers are joking

the thing that bugs me… is…. from the VERY START of Carly and Sonny rekindled relationship…. there was Carly… in his face… butting in about everything going on…

it’s as if Sonny did nothing… but let Carly… his woman… mow him over, as well

so now we are seeing a spiritual soul searching momentous COUPLING ???

I mean ; really?

where do they go from this rebirth… rejuvenation…

if all of Port Charles has no choice but to never mind both of their history…

what’s to care about

so… Sonny proclaims he will take care of HIS family

Carly will mow everyone down who gets in Sonny face? LOL

They both (Brenda & Jax) would set Port Charles on FIRE‼️‼️‼️

Every fan of GH knows that Sonny and Brenda are Endgame. Even Vanessa Marcil has said that. And she would come back for that stiry.

@MT…..Even though I am no Brenda fan, I would consider this to be a more than fair trade….Let’s do it, and oh, could we please throw in Sabs for good measure????? Thanks!

Excellent question……why are these two accepted as upstanding citizens or as I’ve often said lately, the center of the show. I guess we as viewers are supposed to toss aside any sense of right or wrong. I haven’t forgotten as much as the show wants me to that Sonny murdered AJ Quartermaine and Carly is still responsible for the mess that AJ’s life became. Well, I for one, have not forgotten that there was once a sense of morality and value of life and law abiding.

I dont think the writers were explaining the characters per se. I think they were justifying how and why Morgan should go away for treatment. Also, I think the ship has sailed on Brenda.

Loved seeing Sonny n Carly have a civil adult conversation about their relationship. I can see how much they have matured. This conversation was needed n both Maurice n Laura acted it perfectly!!!

I want Sonny with Ava… Fire and ice never a boring moment..
If Ava were with Sonny perhaps he would be my Sonny again, and this new monk Sonny, the love guru would die off.. yuck!

I just have need to FF through the 10 minutes a overly long conversations/ talk talk talk LOL

My favorite college professor would say;
If you can’t say what needs to be said in a solid paragraph then you are just muttering on.

Laura and Maurice are gold, both phenomenal actors!

I wish i could understand it…i like the actors but not their characters…Sonny talks about his mob stuff like its just another day at the office and Carly is Mrs June Cleaver with an anxiety disorder!!!1

Was it me, or have the viewers seen these scenes play out before? I felt as though it was Groundhog Day, watching these scenes. I’m sorry, but Carly being written as a “good mother” is beyond comprehension to me. She does not put her children’s lives or their safety first. Her needs and wants come first. She is a text book narcissist, just like Sonny. Case in point, when she was speaking with her daughter at the Metro Court, and Joss told her how appealing and glamorous that she thought her Uncle Sonny’s lifestyle was-Carly looked shocked, dumbfounded! Why, though? She has done nothing to shield her children from this dangerous man or his lifestyle. As if what happened to Michael, her first born-in prison, was not enough.

It’s a mixed bag, really. I mean, it was nice that Carly suggested no guns and I really think LW brings it every day (MB half the time), but it really is a wasted conversation (like so many others in the past) if nothing ever changes. And when it comes to Sonny on GH, nothing does. The road paved to a happily ever after for Sonny and Carly has come at the expense of so many more things: the reputation of the show, the writing quality has dropped, a loss of fans over the years, loss of both veteran and newer characters, loss of focus on other aspects of the show including its RICH LONG HISTORY (not it’s history since Sonny arrived), and the villainization of good characters.

At the end of the day, I couldn’t care less about Sonny and Carly as a couple.

The GH of today is like commercial radio of today. People are quite sick of hearing the same types of songs by the same artists (pimped by the record companies) over and over (that seem whitewashed and lack creativity), but TIIC seem to think they know what people really want.

The reality is that GH (like radio) used to be more cutting edge and trendsetting in the past and both are a shadow of their former selves.

Yes Liam but just like GH, in real life, I have married friends and they talk about the same things ALL the time!

I think you completely missed the point.

Carly and Sonny have ALWAYS been my favorite couple and I am glad to see that they have matured quite a bit since their 1st marriage. I am not sure that I like Carly going to Jason and telling him that she does not want him and Sonny back together again in business, Jason is an adult and should be able to make his own decisions, but I understand where she is coming from. I am hopeful that Jason WILL reunite with Sonny and in turn make the business LEGIT…..that would be a soap first. LOL Sonny needs male friends, so does Jason and they should be allowed to re-kindle their friendship. JMO

Uh…Sonny and Carly’s relationship ‘complex and unique’…NO, NO AND MORE NO!!!!!

I know, right

really now

overzealous marquee

i’d like to see Sonny stand up to her… her overbearing “nature” just riles

I get that fans drool over Carly’ nature is to never back down… no matter how right or wrong she is

to watch her moral stance… ??? for what??? to be loved ??? by Port Charles…

for her cross to bear?

she’s a take no prisoners… jeez! she belittles and emasculated Jason…. as his bff

she owns Sonny cajones

OK…. Morgan has bi-polar

is that all that’s gone wrong with their relationship ???

what really reeks… what it REELS… is that Sonny andCarly are stuck together…neither of them… really and truly have any other relationships outside of their dimwitted and dull children

they mowed over Jason…. LOL… Carly BFF and Sonny sidekick

yikes

where’s the fun in this couple… everyone outside of their children are bought and paid for… and are sidelining themselves because of their mob lifestyle

yawn

I liked the scene. I thought they let Carly represent the voice of the fans when she said that Sonny made violence look sexy and romantic. It’s what so many of us have been complaining about. Now the writers have to follow through. They have to show Sonny trying to rely less on violence. And they have to show Carly holding him accountable. Otherwise it will be a one-off pretty speech that was just inserted to appease fans, and not to really change the direction of the characters. But all in all I was grateful to the writers for putting the conversation out there. I don’t think Carly and Sonny have ever had a heart to heart quite like this.

I would love to see Sonny… doing menial labor with ripped abs and musculature arms… shelving his coffee beans

I have one word for you, Patrick……”Poldark!” Check out the eponymous character, Ross Poldark, in his famous scything scene from season one, and you’ll be saying “Sonny who????” tout de suite! (Just ask CeeCee!)

I thought it was absurd and laughable. NOW Carly’s having a revelation? Not when Michael was shot and in a coma because of Sonny’s business? Not when Michael killed Claudia, was incarcerated, raped…all because of Sonny’s business? Not when he murdered AJ? Not when Jason was “killed” because of Sonny’s business? Or how ’bout when she had Jax adopt Morgan because of Sonny’s business…oh wait! She did have that revelation..,over and over and over again. So now, when she went into revelation 912 and told him…you don’t want to ask me if Im leaving you…she then answers and tells him…..Im not leaving you. Even though our son almost got Kiki killed and attempted suicide…I’m STILL not leaving you.

Oh and Sonny. Can you not take your guns to work? Okay dear…

what else can we do… if this is the Sonny and Carly Show

3 things…

1. Carly admitting they’ve always loved each other… even when she was with Jax

???? her character just blew me away… when Jax was in her orbit… total WOMAN. NOW… her being all revelatory and aura protected ???? it seems to me… they just made a joke of all that they’ve done and will be

2. she’d crawl on glass back to him…. ??? is this telling us all mob war and come hell or high water… these two would go to the ends of the earth to be with their bonnie and clyde… she just demeaned herself… lowly

3. Carly is telling Sonny… you make killing and mob life Sexy.. not verbatim… but close… these two are in their fifties …. NO ? close enough… Laura Wright is 45… she’s aged. Maurice Benard is 53

i suppose fans can go on

but… it just wasn’t a heart to heart that took me with
but….it just wasn’t a revelation for either or

Could someone explain to me why I should care whatsoever about a career criminal and murderer discussing why he and the woman that helped him cover up the murder of her son’s father are meant for another? Never have two people deserved each other more and never have two people given the fast forward button on my remote such a workout.

Lol..love the “workout” imagery.

I’m a big Sonny and Carly fan, and I really enjoyed their scenes on Monday, and in fact in this whole Bipolar/ Mob storyline. Last Fridays’s scenes with Morgan were wonderful as well. I watch soaps to be entertained, I want to see complex bigger than like characters not perfect everyday people. Sonny and Carly have a lot of dysfunction but that makes them interesting to me. I love Mo and Laura’s chemistry together,we all have characters/pairings we enjoy and they are it for me. Laura Wright is fantastic, and always makes me feel for Carly. I have seen a lot of growth in Carly and I like that. I also understood where Sonny was doing from as well as he is trying to protect his business and his whole family. I always look forward to their scenes together.

What you say is very true, Melissa. I can see how the exchange between Carly and Sonny would be considered poignant by their fans.

I, on the other hand, was not moved. Carly may have superseded my expectations, but Sonny will always be Sonny. I do not think his persona will be changed. I can’t imagine GH without Sonny, as he is. I can’t say. But, I love Maurice, and I would hate for him to lose all semblance of Sonny Corinthos. He should be killed off and brought back as someone else. His good twin, perhaps?

If Sonny is now expected to remove his wolf’s clothing, we will have to wait a very long time. I find it very hard to believe Sonny’s behaviour pattern will change much from his violent lifestyle. That is all he knows.
Everyone around him, especially Carly, has always enabled him. It is no wonder he continued to wreak havoc and destroy others’ home and hearth.

It was a pretty speech, eh? We did see human qualities, somewhat.

As for Vanessa Marcil / Brenda they can’t afford her.

I’m tired of the Carly character. The actress is good but the character has become pointless. She does nothing to move the story forward at this point. If you took her out completely it would make no difference. All she does is wring her hands about her children, proclaim herself Jason’s “best friend”, & get into everyone’s business. She’s pretty judgemental for such an awful person. It’s such a shame that such a formerly great character has become so irritating.

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

By

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

Published

By

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.

Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.

As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY

Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.

Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS

Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.
