GENERAL HOSPITAL: Carly and Sonny Come To An Understanding Of Their Complex Relationship!

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

On Monday’s episode of General Hospital, Laura Wright (Carly) and Maurice Benard (Sonny) proved why they can continually make Carly and Sonny two of the most complex characters in a unique relationship on daytime soaps.

Sonny and Carly got into an honest, tangible discussion about their relationship and where they stand, after everything that has just happened on Pier 54 with the arms deal, Morgan’s (Bryan Craig) manic episode, Kiki’s (Hayley Erin) shooting, and Sonny lying to Carly that he is not truly wheelchair bound, but can walk.   That deception though, ultimately saved the day at Julexis wedding when Sonny took down Dixon.

An emotional Carly tells Sonny that she hates that his business makes him lie to her and their kids, yet she’s not angry with him, but actually at herself!  She feels she’s looked the other way too often, and yet she enjoys the power that Sonny yields.  Carly reveales that her biggest fear is the next bullet could hit him, or one of the kids, and that the cycle of violence they find themselves in never ending.   But Carly also admits that Sonny makes being bad and committing crimes look sexy.   She is aware that it is wrong and that violence should end, but Sonny cannot promise her that, as he will always do what he has to for their children, his family, and for Carly.

Sonny wonders if Carly is going to walk out on him.  She says, what would be the point?  They would find other people like she did with Jax, and he did with countless other women, but they would still long for each other.   In the end, Carly feels like Sonny heard what she has to say.  He smiles with his dimples, something Carly admits she has always has been unable to resist, and the two reach and understanding of their relationship and their past, their mistakes, and their hopes for the future.

It was nice to see an adult conversation between CarSon.  What did you think of the performances of Laura Wright and Maurice Benard in the episode? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

It was great! Again, the writers are injecting dialogue and adding depth. The last writing regimen would have NEVER wrote these scenes between CARSON. The dialogue was true to each others characters. Carly wants Sonny to clean up his act and Sonny says he will see what he can do. In other words, its never going to change and Carly hit the nail on the head when she stated there was no reason to leave him since they would only hurt others and eventually end up back together. Great stuff!

I agree with every word you said Timmm…Really well written for Carly & Sonny.
Getting to understand the inner workings of this relationship was great.. Never

Laura Wright has been on fire! Is she nominated for an Emmy? I hope so. She has really had a good 12 months but then again, she is always steady and she appreciates where she is and is kind to us fans.

These scenes just made me hate them even more, they both make me sick to my stomach. I think Carly needs to spend more time raising Jocelyn.

Thank you for posting!! I feel the same way about these two and most everything Corinthos. Detest the way the writers try to glorify these two and their two sons. The Corinthos characters always come up smelling like roses no matter they do – including murder.

Um, Lil Angel — Jocelyn is not a Corinthos so her importance in the grand scheme of things is pretty much nil. Why should Carly waste a millisecond of her time caring for a child not produced with a criminal when she can dote and fawn over the child produced as a result of Sonny having grown up sexy times with Ava on the crypt of the man he murdered?

Yes, Timmm, in the same way that Frisco is…..through the whims of the showrunners who don’t see fit to have either of these characters visiting Port Charles to be part of their children’s lives.

These types of conversations where writers delve into why might not have the excitement value of shoot out, but they draw me into as a viewer, eager to listen to some real dialogue that has some depth and meaning behind it. Over at Y&R, my ears bleed listening characters scream out the same one liners every day ie. Victor– “Billy boy is no good” Summer ” I don’t want to be caught in the middle” Nikki ” You gone too far this time Victor” Phyllis ” He has to be pay” over and over and over– so thank you GH… Read more »

This was just another reworded conversation they’ve had a thousand times. Carly realized their culpability in the terrible things that happen due to the mob, Sonny once again said he’d try to limit collateral damage and would protect his family. As he has promised for decades, and has always had the same results. Granted, I guess it was nice seeing them have a repeated conversation but with calmer demeanors, but nothing has changed, nor will it ever.

This is why GH is always on fire. Many dislike the constant focus on Sonny and Carly but I love this relationship because it is not about fake hero worship of each other. They both know each others weak spots and know about their personality flaws. Carly hates what Sonny does for work but loves the man she sees. Sonny knows what he does decimates his wife but he also knows it defines who he is to himself. He loves Carly like no other woman. Every time he is with another woman he is bent on proving to himself that… Read more »

I appreciate the attempt by the writers to explain their relationship, and I think much of what was said is plausible. Unfortunately, I am long past caring. And also unfortunately, although I applaud the attempt to do a better job of defining who these two characters are and why they act as they do, what really needs to be explained is not why Carly and Sonny are attracted to one another, but why they aren’t total pariahs in Port Charles but are instead more or less accepted in Port Charles society. That’s the crux of the problem for most of… Read more »

Because Brenda Barrett is Sonny’s true achilles heel. Vanessa Marcil needs to come back in my opinion. Even if Michelle Stafford (who I enjoy), and Rebecca Budig have to leave. She’s the true ratings draw and with the reentrance of her and Jax would set Port Charles ablaze

Excellent question……why are these two accepted as upstanding citizens or as I’ve often said lately, the center of the show. I guess we as viewers are supposed to toss aside any sense of right or wrong. I haven’t forgotten as much as the show wants me to that Sonny murdered AJ Quartermaine and Carly is still responsible for the mess that AJ’s life became. Well, I for one, have not forgotten that there was once a sense of morality and value of life and law abiding.

I dont think the writers were explaining the characters per se. I think they were justifying how and why Morgan should go away for treatment. Also, I think the ship has sailed on Brenda.

I want Sonny with Ava… Fire and ice never a boring moment..
If Ava were with Sonny perhaps he would be my Sonny again, and this new monk Sonny, the love guru would die off.. yuck!

I just have need to FF through the 10 minutes a overly long conversations/ talk talk talk LOL

My favorite college professor would say;
If you can’t say what needs to be said in a solid paragraph then you are just muttering on.

Laura and Maurice are gold, both phenomenal actors!

Was it me, or have the viewers seen these scenes play out before? I felt as though it was Groundhog Day, watching these scenes. I’m sorry, but Carly being written as a “good mother” is beyond comprehension to me. She does not put her children’s lives or their safety first. Her needs and wants come first. She is a text book narcissist, just like Sonny. Case in point, when she was speaking with her daughter at the Metro Court, and Joss told her how appealing and glamorous that she thought her Uncle Sonny’s lifestyle was-Carly looked shocked, dumbfounded! Why, though?… Read more »

It’s a mixed bag, really. I mean, it was nice that Carly suggested no guns and I really think LW brings it every day (MB half the time), but it really is a wasted conversation (like so many others in the past) if nothing ever changes. And when it comes to Sonny on GH, nothing does. The road paved to a happily ever after for Sonny and Carly has come at the expense of so many more things: the reputation of the show, the writing quality has dropped, a loss of fans over the years, loss of both veteran and… Read more »

The GH of today is like commercial radio of today. People are quite sick of hearing the same types of songs by the same artists (pimped by the record companies) over and over (that seem whitewashed and lack creativity), but TIIC seem to think they know what people really want.

The reality is that GH (like radio) used to be more cutting edge and trendsetting in the past and both are a shadow of their former selves.

Carly and Sonny have ALWAYS been my favorite couple and I am glad to see that they have matured quite a bit since their 1st marriage. I am not sure that I like Carly going to Jason and telling him that she does not want him and Sonny back together again in business, Jason is an adult and should be able to make his own decisions, but I understand where she is coming from. I am hopeful that Jason WILL reunite with Sonny and in turn make the business LEGIT…..that would be a soap first. LOL Sonny needs male friends,… Read more »

I liked the scene. I thought they let Carly represent the voice of the fans when she said that Sonny made violence look sexy and romantic. It’s what so many of us have been complaining about. Now the writers have to follow through. They have to show Sonny trying to rely less on violence. And they have to show Carly holding him accountable. Otherwise it will be a one-off pretty speech that was just inserted to appease fans, and not to really change the direction of the characters. But all in all I was grateful to the writers for putting… Read more »

I thought it was absurd and laughable. NOW Carly’s having a revelation? Not when Michael was shot and in a coma because of Sonny’s business? Not when Michael killed Claudia, was incarcerated, raped…all because of Sonny’s business? Not when he murdered AJ? Not when Jason was “killed” because of Sonny’s business? Or how ’bout when she had Jax adopt Morgan because of Sonny’s business…oh wait! She did have that revelation..,over and over and over again. So now, when she went into revelation 912 and told him…you don’t want to ask me if Im leaving you…she then answers and tells him…..Im… Read more »

I’m a big Sonny and Carly fan, and I really enjoyed their scenes on Monday, and in fact in this whole Bipolar/ Mob storyline. Last Fridays’s scenes with Morgan were wonderful as well. I watch soaps to be entertained, I want to see complex bigger than like characters not perfect everyday people. Sonny and Carly have a lot of dysfunction but that makes them interesting to me. I love Mo and Laura’s chemistry together,we all have characters/pairings we enjoy and they are it for me. Laura Wright is fantastic, and always makes me feel for Carly. I have seen a… Read more »

What you say is very true, Melissa. I can see how the exchange between Carly and Sonny would be considered poignant by their fans. I, on the other hand, was not moved. Carly may have superseded my expectations, but Sonny will always be Sonny. I do not think his persona will be changed. I can’t imagine GH without Sonny, as he is. I can’t say. But, I love Maurice, and I would hate for him to lose all semblance of Sonny Corinthos. He should be killed off and brought back as someone else. His good twin, perhaps? If Sonny is… Read more »

I’m tired of the Carly character. The actress is good but the character has become pointless. She does nothing to move the story forward at this point. If you took her out completely it would make no difference. All she does is wring her hands about her children, proclaim herself Jason’s “best friend”, & get into everyone’s business. She’s pretty judgemental for such an awful person. It’s such a shame that such a formerly great character has become so irritating.

General Hospital

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Sonny Comes Home as Jason and Carly Begin Their Wedding Night

Monday’s episode of General Hospital continued to set the stage for major payoffs in the long and winding road tale of everyone in Port Charles believing Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) is dead.

Only now, with his memory in tact, Sonny is very much alive, no longer living as “Mike” in Nixon Falls. and back in the town which he ruled as the mob kingpin.  Problem is: his wife, Carly (Laura Wright) just got married to his best friend, Jason (Steve Burton) and they are about to have their first night together as newlyweds.  And without all the subplot and subtext, Sonny has no idea that they were first brought together to be a united front to save Sonny’s territory from the ‘Five Families’.  Only now, the two have admitted they truly are in-love with each other.

In story, after the bomb that went off was proven to kill mobsters Buscema and Novak, and not its intended target – the newlyweds – thanks to a double-cross from Ms. Wu – Jason, Carly, and Ms. Wu discuss Cyrus Renault’s (Jeff Kober) involvement and that Wu is happy for Jason and Carly.

At the wedding reception, Michael (Chad Duell) gives a touching speech about his mom and Jason and gives the official toast.  Later, Jason and Carly head out after Carly throws the bouquet which Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) catches.

Meanwhile, back in Nixon Falls, Sonny gets out of dodge and away from Nina (Cynthia Watros), thanks to Jax’s (Ingo Rademacher) plane, while Nina gets a visit from Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) and Anna (Finola Hughes), where she admits that Peter (Wes Ramsey) was in Nixon Falls, and caused the fire, and is going to go after Maxie (Kirsten Storms) and the baby.  She does not tell them what she did keeping Sonny away from his family for 9 months.

Anna and Peter split up to find Peter, and Peter’s exit ride hasn’t show up yet to get him out of Nixon Falls, so Anna catches him, gun drawn.

Later at the Corinthos home, Jason and Carly are alone together in the bedroom with wedding night jitters, but Jason says there is no rush as the two kiss, just as Sonny arrives home, smiles, looks around, sees photos of himself with Carly and the family, and heads upstairs!

Will Sonny find the two in each others arms and not tell then he is alive?  Will something call him away? Will Jason and Carly have sex? When will Nina get payback for all that she has done to Carly and Sonny?  Will Peter get away from Anna? Let us know your theories in the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Sonny Tells Nina He Knows Exactly Who He Is; Jason & Carly’s Wedding Comes to an Explosive Conclusion

Is it game over for Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros), or does she have another trick up her sleeve to keep Sonny (Maurice Benard) to herself, now that he remembers who is he?

On Friday’s dramatic episode of General Hospital, “Mike” looks to be gone and Sonny has come back in full force complete with a super hero moment escaping from being trapped underneath the beam that had fallen on top of him inside the burning Tan-O.  Sonny makes his escape after inhaling so many fumes, that he needs medical attention and is rushed to the hospital with Nina going along with him.

Inside the hospital, once given the all clear, Phyllis (Joyce Guy) tells Nina, “Mike” is asking for her, while Jax (Ingo Rademacher) pleads to let the doctors handle this situation.  But, Nina heads inside the room to see Sonny.  Then came the dramatic moment that many GH fans were waiting for.  As Nina calls him “Mike, he rips off his oxygen mask in anger and says that his name is Sonny and he remembers everything!  Nina does a pivot, knowing she is caught, and says the name may have have been a fake one, but they cannot deny the way they feel about each other.  She tells him that she honestly loves him and Sonny defiantly tells her NOT to say that.  Meanwhile Jax confirms to Phyllis that Nina always knew that “Mike” was Sonny and hid it from her and Sonny for months!

Back in Port Charles, Jason (Steve Burton) and Carly’s (Laura Wright) wedding comes to a conclusion! No one interrupts the wedding and the two look lovingly at each other to start their new life together as husband and wife.

Courtesy/ABC

After the ceremony, mobsters Ms. Wu, Vincent, and Charles have a moment where she says “be wary of tomorrow”.  Jason and Carly have a moment alone where Jason looks truly in love with Carly now and all of those feelings he had buried for years have now come back to the surface. How will this all play out when Sonny comes back into everyone’s lives, alive and well?

After the reception had ended, Jason and Carly get in their limo to drive away as newlyweds.  She asks Jason what Ms. Wu whispered in his ear at the reception, he says she confirmed something he already knew.  Meanwhile, Vincent and Charles get in their limo.  Charles shares the world is about to be a better place without Carly and Jason in it.

Next, Carly tells the driver to start the car, and we see a bomb device under a car and the chapel blown up as the show comes to its conclusion.

Our bet is that the Novak/Buscema car was blown to bits, not Jarly’s limo thanks to a Wu double-cross, but we shall see next week! Great performances from Maurice Benard, Cynthia Watros, Laura Wright, and Steve Burton throughout this one.

So, what did you think of the moment Sonny told Nina he remembered who he is? What did you think of Jason and Carly’s nuptials? What do you think will happen next? Share your thoughts and theories via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Sonny Remembers Carly Just as She Is Marrying Jason

After nine months of being “Mike”, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) had a major breakthrough as his memory is all coming back to him now (as the Celine Dion song says), and in the process the Tan-O has burned to the ground, signaling the the probable end to the Nixon Falls arc of the story.

As the story picked-up on Thursday, Nina’s (Cynthia Watros) plot to keep Sonny for herself and away from Carly majorly backfired on her.  Not only does Phyllis (Joyce Guy) now know that Nina lied about “Mike’s” identify the entire time, but Peter August (Wes Ramsey) is running wild and free heading back to Port Charles to claim his baby and Maxie (Kirsten Storms), after setting fire to the building.

Courtesy/ABC

Since “Mike” ran in to save Nina and got hit by a beam in the process, he is alone in the burning Tan-O enveloped by flames, but that triggers the beginning of his memory coming back.

Meanwhile, back in Port Charles, Jason (Steve Burton) and Carly (Laura Wright) are at their wedding, with the five family mob bosses present with a plot of their own and everyone wondering if Jarly will say “I do'”.    The two light a candle together for those loved ones no longer with them … ah, Sonny!

Back the burning Tan-O, Sonny is visited by the vision of the real Mike (Max Gail) who tells him it’s time for him to go home now.  A conflicted Sonny tells Mike he is very happy in Nixon Falls with Nina, but Mike tells him he needs to know his past in order to move forward.  When Sonny has flashes of his violent past it frightens him, and he says whatever family he has is better off without him in their lives.

Jax (Ingo Rademacher) tries to text Maxie while still in Nixon Falls with Nina to watch out for Peter, but she is attending and managing Carly and Sonny’s wedding, so she doesn’t pick up the phone!

Inside the Tan-O, Sonny sees a vision of woman, who when she turns and faces him is Carly. While Sonny is lying on the floor and is engulfed in flames and trapped, Mike tells Sonny he can die as “Mike” or live on as the man he truly is, Sonny.  It is then Sonny calls out “Carly!”

So, what did you think of the episode? Do you think Carly and Jason will get married? Will Sonny tells Nina he remembers? What will Nina’s next move be? Are you glad Sonny seems to have his memory back? The episode featured another strong performance by Maurice Benard.  Share your thoughts below.
