GENERAL HOSPITAL: Parker: “You Did Proposition Me!” Kristina: “Because You Wanted It!”

Courtesy/ABC

Courtesy/ABC

On Monday’s episode of General Hospital, the relationship between Professor Parker Forsyth (Ashley Jones) and Kristina (Lexi Ainsworth) became a tad more clear,  or did it?

Parker, who has shown up at the Davis home, confronts Kristina on her smear campaign against her.   When she first arrives she even meets Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn), and realizes Kristina has not told her mother that she was suspended from school.  That sets the stage for innuendos and more! Both women admit they’ve gone to great lengths to protect their secrets that would threaten their lives.  Parker goes on to say to Kristina,  “I admit it.  I have a good life.  I have a career, and a home, a wife  … I don’t want to lose it. ”  Kristina’s comeback is, “Yet, here you are!”

Next, Parker reveals: “I agreed not to talk to your parents, and you agreed not to talk to my wife.  But did you think these negative comments on the Professor Review website would go unnoticed?”  Parker believes Kristina was behind them citing: “A student disgruntled on her grades attempts to seduce me for better marks, and then said student when she was rightly served with a suspension starts a smear campaign …”   Kristina fires back “First, you accuse me of propositioning you, now of trolling you.  Which is it?”

Viewers learn that the duo met after hours and shared some scotch, and that Parker admitted to Kristina that her needs weren’t being met at home.  Parker still stands firm:  “Kristina, You did proposition me!” Kristina:  “Because you wanted it!”

Before she leaves, Parker tells Kristina it would be a shame to throw her life away on a single folly when she had just so much potential.  Then she remarks that Kristina better figure out what she wants and who she wants to be, before her parents figure it out for themselves.

So, what did you think of the confrontation scene between Parker and Kristina?  Do you think Kristina was just trying to seduce Parker to help her grades, but she is not really interested in women … or, do you think Parker’s final message to Kristina before she left rings true, and that Kristina better figure out who she truly is?   How do you hope this plays out?  Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

At least we got the backstory but I just found it odd that they spent almost the whole confrontation face to face 6 inches from each other.

I found the whole, “you wanted it” argument from Christina to be really disturbing. It’s not an acceptable argument for straight relationships, neither should it be for gay and lesbian ones. And for those who object to “straight” Christina suddenly being gay, that doesn’t bother me. I think having a bisexual on the canvas would be really interesting. Now they need to resolve the Lucas / Brad relationship. Brad being married was dropped like yesterday’s news and all we’ve had since is a phone call between the two, all heard from Lucas’s side. GH should invest in this story. It’s… Read more »

I really thought they were going to kiss on Mondays show! Who stands THAT close without smooching? Anyway, If Krissy isnt going to explore her sexuality, this is ALL a waste! I’m sure Parker rubbed other students the wrong way and they could have posted negative comments about the professor. Krissy shuts up, Parker shuts up, NEXT STORY!

Seriously. Why do soaps insist on turning straight characters gay? Kristina was head over heels for Ethan and Trey. Lucas used to like girls. So did DAYS’ Will. This is dumb and completely agenda-driven.

Dylan

I agree with you 100% Maddie. The decision to make characters gay on soaps is done “will”y nilly, spur of the moment, like a writer’s meeting “Hey wouldn’t it be great if so and so was gay?” Thus begins the rewriting of history, character destruction, and other characters who “knew it all along” and are nothing but lovey dovey and supportive. Just prior to Will coming out on DAYS, he was being a nice sweet teenage boyfriend to Gabi, buying her flowers, and being a very loving, respectable young man. There was not a flicker of him being gay, he… Read more »

Dylan, I think the majority of the backlash against DAYS for killing Will wasn’t because he was gay but because he was a legacy character related to both the Bradys and the Hortons. His death — coupled with the shabby treatment Sonny received by being seated in the second row at his own husband’s funeral and Paul’s sexuality disappearing in the blink of an eye — was perceived as a punishment for his being gay (if I recall correctly Will didn’t even fight back as he was being murdered). Will could just as easily have been written off going to… Read more »

Well Dylan, now you’ve done it, this thread is gonna get 100 comments and 1,000 views, LOL. GH is trying to reach a young, hip audience I guess, when the majority of their audience is over 40 and heterosexual. They keep pushing gays to “test the waters” maybe. Look at what happened with Brucas. They had a whirlwind courtship, got engaged at the Nurse’s Ball (when most of us would rather have seen a couple we’d actually been ROOTING for get engaged .. Brucas was so rushed .. just like Wilson was). Rushing to that big gay wedding they were… Read more »

And oh yes, I totally agree with both of you, Dylan and Alan, about Will. He was a legacy Horton and Brady and we watched him grow up on the show. Killing him off in such a gruesome way was so unnecessary. Putting sonny in the second row was insensitive, even if they were estranged. If it was because they didn’t want to do the gay story anymore, it was such a waste to make Will gay. They should have done it with someone else the audience didn’t care so much about. Someone who didn’t already have a history of… Read more »

Me neither. GH already has a gay couple.
Can’t we focus on the other couples- and see some happiness and love. Dante and Lulu just busted up, we rarely see Maxie with Nathan, Carly and Sonny are like an old married couple lol, Ava and DA is stupid, Nina and Franco have great chemistry but barely any screen time, and the only cute couple is Alexis and Julian. With some many people on the show, why can’t we get a good consistent storyline?

Alan

Whether anybody wants a gay storyline or not, it’s about the only option for Christina. She’s related to practically every single male in town except for Franco, Nathan, TJ, and Paul.

That’s what happens when a show has short term vision and allows one character impregnate half the town resulting in all the young adults being half siblings.

Such as Sonny?
I understand, (via Shay) that Sam miscarried Sonny’s child. Did I get that right? Well, anyway; imagine that! Her child would have been her sibling’s brother or sister…..All in the family!!
Sonny could start his own colony. Are we sure Lulu isn’t Sonny’s? Oh, my !!

I say go ahead and write a gay storyline but if so, do it right–make the couple pay fidelity to reality without giving into stereotypes and give the story some thoroughfare for cripe’s sake. AMC touched upon a lesbian storyline way back in the early 80’s when Brooke developed a bit of a crush on her doctor who was a lesbian. The doctor (she played Annette in Saturday Night Fever but I forget the actress’s name). They touched upon it and left it unfinished. Then Bianca, Erica Kane’s daughter, makes the big announcement and then that poor girl never gets… Read more »

All I ask is if GH goes in this direction they don’t react to the fear. DAYS killed/wrote off every gay character except for one who has been sufficiently neutered so that he doesn’t “offend” the viewers. Y&R still has zero gay representation and B&B only goes for the trending topic approach (their current trans story). The rationale that people such as yourself use to ignore their own inner bigotry is that the other person is only thinking of themselves. There’s a difference between accepting that there are people around you who are gay–friends, coworkers, neighbors–and feeling interested in watching what goes on in their bedrooms. Generally, most people like to view love scenes because they find them erotic. If you’re straight, you might not find a gay love scene erotic and vice versa. Nothing wrong with that. The daytime soap audience is still mostly straight women. What’s wrong with making a show that appeals to that audience? Are there no soapy shows for and about gay couples? If not, there should be. It fills my heart with gratitude to be a part of this tribute to him, and to feel so close to him working on a show he loved so much doing.”

Lynn Herring Celebrates 35th Anniversary of Her General Hospital Debut; and ‘We Love Lucy’

Today, April 11th marks the 35th anniversary of the debut of Lynn Herring on General Hospital as Lucy Coe.  And wow, when you look at the road this character has gone on played to the hilt by Herring, it has been one entertaining ride for GH fans along the way.

Lucy started out as a mousy librarian, if you can believe that! And of course, she eventually showed all that she was a bombshell.  She then became quite the schemer and seductress.

Along the way, Lucy was married to Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon), was involved with Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner), Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom) and other men in Port Charles.

At one point, Herring took the character of Lucy to the now defunct Port Charles where she stayed from 1997-2003,

But this one time gold-digger eventually became the champion of the GH Nurses’ Ball and helped raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS research. Now, year after year, the one thing you can always look forward to is Herring’s hilarious antics and sincerity in her star turn as the emcee of the annual fundraising event.

On Sunday, the GH tweeted posted: “Lucy Coe knows everything about everyone in Port Charles and we would be lost without her. Please help us congratulate TheLynnHerring on the 35th Anniversary of her #GH debut”.

Lynn responded sharing: “Thank you! Have loved every @GeneralHospital  moment!”

GENERAL HOSPITAL: “I’m Alexis Davis, and I’m a Fighter, and an Idealist, and an Advocate”; Nancy Lee Grahn Gives Masterful Performance In Special Episode

When you combine superb direction, writing, production, and acting in a special episode of a daytime drama, viewers can see and understand the thought and care that went into it.

This was more than on display during Thursday’s highly-anticipated ‘Alexis-Centric’ episode honoring the 25th anniversary of Alexis’ portrayer, two-time Daytime Emmy winner, Nancy Lee Grahn, on General Hospital.

In the story, symbolism was apparent and used for dramatic impact and it worked beautifully throughout, and best of all, Nancy received a script worthy of her immeasurable talents, and showed us once again why she remains one of the gold standards of our genre.  If you have not seen the episode DO NOT read any further as it contains spoilers.

It begins with an emotional Alexis looking at her mother’s watch which was still frozen from the time of her death.  While playing one of her mother’s records very loudly, she recalls Mikkos Cassadine kissing and dancing with her mom as a young Alexis (Natasha) looked on from the staircase.  When Sam asks her about it, Alexis shares that she sees the watch as sort of a representation for her own life being frozen over the last three years; which has included Alexis’ battle with booze taking over her life and her being disbarred, when being a lawyer was the way she identified herself and what gave her purpose.

Overwhelmed and anxiety-ridden, Alexis hightails it to Kevin’s office for a therapy session knowing she is going to Pentonville in the morning to serve her sentence.  She says she does not know who she is anymore.  Then, Kevin asks her how she spent her day thus far.  She flashes back to lunch with the good men in her life, Finn, Valentin, Jax and Ned.  Valentin tells Alexis she is proud of her for honing up to her mistakes.

Back at the therapy session, Alexis she was an attorney who stood for something and her life has derailed, and that she was a fighter, an idealist, and an advocate.  She knows she has to find a purpose in prison to make it through the three-year term and asks Kevin to help her find one.

Kevin wants to go back to when she was a little girl and her memories that are flooding back to her of Mikkos and her mother.  Just then, the younger version of Alexis is huddled in the corner of Kevin’s office, an image of her from the past.  Alexis tries to come to terms with her father and the choice of dangerous men and relationships that have marred her own happiness  … recalling Julian holding a knife to her throat like Mikkos did to her mother. She says he was one of the toxic men in her life, but Kevin reminds her all of the men in her life were not toxic.

Alexis starts with Ned as one who was good for her saying he was always stable, but she ruined that by recently sleeping with him and putting a wedge in his marriage to her long-time friend, Olivia.

We then flashback to earlier in the day, where Alexis ends up in an almost confrontation with Olivia.  However, Olivia tells her she misses the Alexis Davis she used to be and to get her back.

Now back with Kevin, a guilt-ridden Alexis relays she feels responsible for Neil’s death.  Kevin interjects she is not, nor what happened with Julian.  When Kevin attempts to bring up Mikkos again, Alexis rejects it and is angry that he is making her problem about daddy issues; like so many other women.  She vehemently shouts that the men in her life do not define who she is.

Then, Alexis flashes back to hurtful memories she has buried of a young Natasha witnessing Mikkos calling her mother a “greedy little bitch”.  She recalls it was on Christmas Eve and that Mikkos stopped by to give them gifts. That is when he presented her mother with the watch.  However, things took an ugly turn when he tried to leave, and she threatened to tell Helena all about her and Natasha. Next, Mikkos slapped her and that is when the watch shattered. As all this was going down, a young Natasha watched from the stairs and was horrified that she couldn’t stop her father from beating her mother and remembers how helpless she felt.

However, Alexis reveals to Kevin she thought this would be the last of Mikkos coming by, but he returned on New Year’s Eve and her mother took him back into their lives.  Alexis is beside herself that she could not protect her mother, but Kevin reassures her to remember she was just a child.

It is then we come to the crux of the story.  Alexis looks over in the corner and sees her younger self crying. She goes to her younger self and tells her nothing that happened was her fault, and that their father was damaged and cruel. She tells the young Natasha this shouldn’t have been her burden to carry alone, and that she deserves to be happy. Then in the moment of strength and coming full circle, Alexis introduces herself to the young Natasha, “I’m Alexis Davis, a fighter, an advocate, and an idealist … and I will take care of everything from her on out.”  In that moment, Alexis embraced herself, and forgave herself, so she could move on with her life.

Alexis then flashes back to earlier that night, as the Davis girls gather for a faux graduation ceremony so Alexis could see Molly in her cap and gown and they hug. Back in her session, Kevin remarks that Alexis has repeatedly defined herself as a fighter, an idealist, and an advocate, and reminds her she has three daughters who have those qualities, and that all she needs to be is Alexis Davis.

Then, we get a heart-warming montage of Alexis though the years in honor of Nancy’s 25th anniversary with GH.

As the episode concludes, it is the next morning, and Alexis enters Pentonville and enters her jail cell. There she meets her fellow inmate, who is studying law books to prep for her upcoming parole hearing. Alexis introduces herself as “Alexis Davis” and as someone who can help her.  We then go back to her mother’s watch which now begins ticking at Alexis’ home.  The show fades to black.

Kudos to Daytime Emmy winner, Phideaux Xavier for his outstanding direction, head writers: Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor and script writer, Scott Sickles for the thoughtful episode, EP Frank Valentini and his production crew for putting it all together, and the one and only Nancy Lee Grahn for a performance that will be remembered as a classic.
