(UPDATED) It’s been a very heavy and emotional weekend for those in the entertainment industry, their fans and their loved ones. First, Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on Sunday, December 14 with their son, Nick arrested for their murders. There has been an outpouring of sadness and remembrances for Reiner who not only was an actor, director, writer, but a political activist. Rob was 78 and Michele was 68 at the time.

On the heels of that, soap opera fans woke up on Monday morning, December 15 to learn that also on Sunday, the legendary and iconic, eight-time Daytime Emmy winning actor, Anthony Geary, beloved for his role as Luke Spencer on General Hospital, also died at the age of 78. According to reports, Geary died from complications of a surgery he had three days prior. No further details have been made available at this time. Geary leaves behind his beloved husband with whom he lived with in Amsterdam, Claudio Gama.

Geary’s General Hospital castmates begun to take to social media in the last 24 hours with extremely heartfelt and touching remembrances of the one-of-a-kind actor, who played Luke up until he retired in 2015. While Michael Fairman TV previously shared tributes from Geary’s former co-stars, Genie Francis (Laura) and Jonathan Jackson (ex-Lucky), and another soap icon, Erika Slezak (ex-Viki, OLTL, ex-Ronnie, GH), below are some of the actors that have honored Tony by expressing what he has meant to them, personally and professionally.

John Stamos (ex-Blackie): “I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend and former costar, Tony Geary. Coming on the heels of the tragic deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, whom I admired immensely — this feels like a heartbreaking moment for so many of us who grew up watching and learning from these giants of our craft. I was only 19 years old on my first job, General Hospital, and Tony could not have been kinder or more welcoming. At that age, everything feels big. He made it feel safe. I was mesmerized by his acting. I would stay after my scenes were finished just to watch him work — not because I had to, but because I wanted to learn. Watching Tony was like watching someone rewrite the rules in real time. He changed the face of daytime television. And in very real ways, he changed my life. What always stood out to me was how real he was. He never fell into the traps or tricks that can happen when you’re doing the volume needed for an hour show every day. He attacked every character and every script with honesty, intelligence, and fearlessness. There was no autopilot with Tony — ever. He was truly one of a kind. When he showed up for me when I got a star on the Walk of Fame, it meant the world to me. That was Tony. He showed up — quietly and generously. I wrote about him in my book because he is part of my foundation as an actor. He will always be part of my work. The way he committed, the way he listened, the way he elevated everyone around him — I carry that with me still. Thank you, Tony, for your brilliance, your kindness, and for setting the bar so impossibly high. You really stood out. Rest easy, my friend.”

Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis): “The actor I’ve learned the most from, loved to work with the most, revered the most, laughed with the most, was inspired by the most, got in the most trouble with and had the most fun with, was Tony Geary. He was a masterful craftsman, a wordsmith, irreverent , curious, intelligent, endlessly generous, clever, a good troublemaker, dapper, delightfully naughty, a deep thinker, a great writer, editor and pontificator, almost always on the right side of every issue, sexy, sagacious, defiant, determined, kind and true. If Tone Tone, as I called him, hadn’t leapt out of the generic soapbox of yore, and broadened and expanded the definition and perception of a Daytime performer, I doubt I’d have ever taken a job in Daytime Television. Tony was the pioneer of real, exciting, multi dimensional, unpredictable acting in the Daytime Serial world. He brought excitement to the medium, and I was excited by it. Tony was my teacher, my champion, most daring partner in acting crime, and my cherished friend. I will miss him in the flesh but will see that “Fuck em” twinkle in his eye for evermore.”

Wally Kurth (Ned): “It’s been a tough year. We have lost another beloved actor from GH. I’m so saddened. I want to add my praise and deep respect for the one and only Tony Geary. He raised the acting performance bar in Daytime TV to a level I know I’ll never meet. As an actor who worked with him, I was always reminded of his skill, professionalism and integrity. He was the gold standard. And his 8 Emmy wins and countless nominations prove it. I wish I had had more scenes him – because he made me a better actor. He was funny, smart and opinionated. He liked to run his lines to learn them, which was funny to me since many of them were rewritten by him! He is terribly missed by all of us at GH. We will carry on. His spirit is always here in the studio. Sending my heartfelt condolences to his family and especially Claudio❤️ RIP Anthony Geary.”

Rick Springfield (ex-Noah): “Sad to hear of Tony’s passing. He was the reason GH went where it went in the early ‘80s. The rest of us rode along with him and did our part but Tony was the driver along with the great Gloria Monty. Had a really great evening with Tony and my guys in Amsterdam years ago. Such a good guy who deserved all the accolades he received. Love to those he left behind.”

Jacob Young (ex-Lucky): “I’m at a loss for words over the passing of my mentor, on-screen father, and dear friend, Anthony Geary. He gave so much to his craft and cared deeply about his fellow actors. Even after my time on General Hospital, we always remained close, and I will forever be grateful for his guidance, generosity, and friendship. RIP Tony.”

Greg Vaughan (ex-Lucky): “”There are people who fill a room by demanding attention. And then there are people like Tony — who never asked for it, yet held it effortlessly. For nearly seven years, I had the privilege of standing beside him on General Hospital, portraying his son, Lucky… and if anyone was Lucky, it was me! What I came to understand quickly was that Tony wasn’t interested in being celebrated — he was interested in being present. Present in the work. Present with his fellow actors. Present in the quiet moments that mattered far more than applause. When I first joined the show, months later we found ourselves in New York for the Emmys. Tony took me under his wing without fanfare, without hierarchy — just generosity. Sitting front row at Radio City Music Hall with him wasn’t about the ceremony. It was about being beside someone who carried himself with humility, curiosity, and kindness, even in moments meant to shine a light on him.”

“One of my most treasured memories is a scene where my character lay on life support. Tony leaned in, called me “Cowboy,” and softly sang “Don’t Fence Me In.” It was simple. Tender. And unforgettable. He had me welling up while I was trying to be still. That was Tony — never pushing, never performing for effect, just telling the truth of the moment. He taught me that greatness doesn’t announce itself. It listens. It gives. It lifts others quietly. His impact on my life — personally and professionally — didn’t come from lessons spoken out loud, but from how he showed up every day with love and a smile. I am deeply grateful for the time, the trust, and the humanity he shared with me. Tony, thank you for the work, the love, the laughter, the guidance — and for reminding me that the most meaningful legacies are carried softly. You will always be with me. R.I.P. ️”

Tamara Braun (ex-Carly, now Sienna, Y&R): “Rob Reiner and Tony on the same day. Same age. They worked together too. Tony was one of the best actors daytime ever had. We didn’t get to work much together when I played Carly and I was always disappointed by that because he was so brilliant. And kind. He was so kind to me. My heart goes out to Claudio and his family and to all who loved him.”

Laura Wright (Carly): “One of my first scenes with Tony we were in Kelly’s and he said “ Just so you know, I like to juggle, tap dance and sing all at the same time ’ and I laughed and said let’s go !! I grew up watching the incredible Luke Spencer- I fell in love with daytime because I fell in love with Luke and Laura. My heart is so so sad – Daytime lost the one that changed it all !!! RIP ”

Jon Lindstrom (Kevin, GH, Joey, Beyond the Gates): “Hard to put into words what Anthony Geary meant to so many people. I can tell you what I think: I’ve worked with everyone from geniuses to hacks and I can confidently say that, IMHO, Tony was one of the best American actors. Full stop. I’d seen him before I knew what General Hospital was. Streets of San Francisco. All In The Family. I also saw him on PBS in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra w/ Timothy Dalton & Lynn Redgrave. He was always the best thing onscreen. When I started GH in 1992 he welcomed me with open arms. And damn that guy was FUNNY! Today, and for a while, my ❤️ is with Genie, Kin, Lynn, Jonathan, and Claudio. R.I.P.”

Emma Samms (ex-Holly):” Tony played a dangerous, unpredictable bad boy on General Hospital, but he was only ever supportive, kind and patient with me. When I started working with him in 1982, I was 21 years old. He was in his thirties. He basically taught me how to act.  He was so good at his craft. He took it seriously. He made brave, unexpected choices, forcing anyone in a scene with him to listen and pay attention. And he was funny. Breaking the tension of a day’s worth of soap melodrama with a nudge, a wink or a moment of naughtiness. I knew that Luke and Holly would never be Luke and Laura, we all knew that, but he didn’t allow comparisons. He gave me confidence as an actor and as a person, listening to my trials and tribulations with a sympathetic and encouraging ear. Always. I loved that he stepped away and made a new life for himself on the other side of the world. And I loved that he found love. He deserved it. All of us lucky enough to have spent time with him knew that.”

Finola Hughes (Anna): “The original. He took my breath away, so magical, creative, fearless. The thing of legend. So glad I spent time with you and Claudio in Amsterdam for a couple of summers. The best host, conversationalist, deep thinker, witty, kind raconteur. Deeply mischievous, naturally my kids adored you. Thank you Tony for the really, really good times, for sharing your heart and spirit. Claudio I love you, we send our hugs.I’m always going to think of Tony out on the canals in his boat, slowly sailing through Amsterdam. GOAT”

Emme Rylan (ex-Lulu): “Rest in peace, Tony. Thank you for welcoming me and being so kind and giving. But most of all, thank you for letting us all witness your brilliance. We were all changed for good.”Susan Lucci (ex-Erica, AMC): “My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Tony Geary, his GH family, and the legions of fans who loved him. I cherish the time we spent doing a documentary in Kenya, on behalf of children—I remember we were both so touched and impacted by our experience there. Tony was such a talented actor and a wonderful man with a big heart. RIP Tony, knowing you will be in the hearts and memories of so many.”

Julie Berman (ex-Lulu): “Love You, Tony”

SAG/AFTRA: “We celebrate the life of actor Anthony Geary, who portrayed the iconic Luke Spencer on ABC’s ‘General Hospital’ for 37 years, opposite Genie Francis as one half of the legendary couple Luke and Laura. Debuting in 1978, Geary remained in the role until his retirement in 2015. The couple’s 1981 wedding episode drew more than 30 million viewers, making it the most-watched soap opera episode in history. Geary earned a record-breaking eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor for his work on the series.”

Maurice Benard (Sonny): “What can I say thats not been said? Two things about Tony. He was one of the funniest people I knew. I saw Tony in a one man play and I said it then and I’ll say it now I never saw better acting in my life I owe a lot to Tony. Daytime wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Luke/Laura.”

Michelle Stafford (ex-Nina, GH, now Phyllis Y&R) – “As I have said before this man is hugely responsible for me being an actor today. I watched Tony (on GH) when I was younger every day. My sister and I would watch, truly, every single day. As I would watch I would think “I want to do what he’s doing”. He wouldn’t even really be in the scene and you would see him in the background acting his ass off, being committed, pulling focus.. He wasn’t even trying to upstage anyone, he just did. He couldn’t help it… he was a star. He made every scene he was in important. Every moment important. He loved acting. He loved Art. You can imagine how I felt when I joined the show. I don’t really get starstruck. But I always was when I was around him. I did one scene with him when I was on GH.”

“I was coming out of my skin. I was extremely nervous. I remember I was sort of hiding off set calming myself down. I had been so mesmerized by him for so many years and I could not believe that I was acting with him. In 2004 we won Emmys together for best actor and best actress. You know, those moments in time where you cannot believe that this is where your life has taken you…? This was one of them, you know what I mean? Tony was honest, he was intelligent. He was real. I still can’t believe that I had the pleasure of knowing him. He didn’t even know that he had affected my life so deeply. I was too shy to tell him. How lucky are we all, that he touched our lives on the screen. How fortunate am I that he equally touched my life in person and as a colleague. Godspeed”

Anders Hove (Faison): Tony always went out of his way to be a good friend and great acting partner. Right up till the end, he was fun, funny, an incredible sense of humor, and wonderfully cynical in a beautiful way. I’ve made many visits to Amsterdam for visits, and every time was more fun than the one before. He’ll always make me smile — and laugh — just thinking of him, which I always will.”

Kimberly McCullough (ex-Robin): “1 of 1. The truest of gentlemen.A fierce wit. A daring artist. A generous heart. RIP to the GOAT.”

Photo: ALMAY

Sarah Brown (ex-Carly and Claudia): “Rest well dear Tony ❣️ Sending my love and condolences to all who knew and loved him. When I first started, GH, Tony was one of my greatest supporters. He gave me the courage to play outside the box and follow my instincts. I can’t imagine playing Carly Spencer without him as my uncle Luke. I adored every single minute of working with him.”

Kelly Thiebaud (Britt): “I’m lucky to have met and worked with you,” Thiebaud shared in an Instagram Story. “I did not know you well but I thought you were the coolest. Sleep peacefully.”

Brandon Barash (ex-Johnny): “Sweet Tony (TG). How is it that you’ve left this earthly plane so prematurely? (although you wouldn’t think so) The notion that I have no words to adequately convey my pain and emptiness would bring you great joy and even some punches of laughter. The hours upon hours we’d spend on your boat or in your home discussing words — be it our favorite books, me reading your writings out loud, or you reading mine, our favorite curse words in different languages, etc…the irony isn’t lost on me. So here’s what I know: A piece of my heart shattered today. That’s okay, I’ll piece it back together with the most glittery glue I can find. The gaps in between the shards now imbued with memories from one of the most unique and at times whimsical friendships this life has given me. What you taught me about the craft and about life will be forever woven into the fabric of my being — yes, even the black pudding. You and Claudio are and will always be family. This loss has me, well, at a loss. You’d probably tell me to, “Buck up, Casanova.” I intend on doing just that. Rest in whimsy, friend. BB”

Photo: JPI

Bradford Anderson (Spinelli): “Tony was magic. The first scene I ever had with him I remember looking into his eyes and feeling connection, appreciation, and a dash of mischief. We loved to talk theater and share New York stories. So many of us owe him so much. Saying he’ll be missed doesn’t even come close.”

Kathleen Gati (Liesl): Absolutely heartbroken to hear this. Deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and fans. I will always be grateful to Anthony Geary for his support and kindness.”

Kin Shriner (Scott): “I too was hit with GH dream last night that I tried to explain until I got the call . Tony was saying goodbye to both of us,” shared the longtime favorite responding to co-star Genie Francis’ social media post upon learning her longtime co-star had passed.

Frank Valentini (EP, General Hospital): “The entire General Hospital family is heartbroken over the news of Tony Geary’s passing,” Valentini said in a statement. “Tony was a brilliant actor and set the bar that we continue to strive for. His legacy, and that of Luke Spencer’s, will live on through the generations of GH cast members who have followed in his footsteps. We send our sincerest sympathies to his husband, Claudio, family, and friends. May he rest in peace.”

The Young and the Restless: “The entire Young & Restless family mourns the loss of the incomparable Anthony Geary, who appeared during the show’s inaugural season in 1973. His remarkable talent and lasting impact on daytime television will never be forgotten. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and our colleagues at General Hospital.

Rachel Schwartz (Head of Daytime/Children’s & Family Emmys) :“Our condolences are with our friends at General Hospital on the passing of Anthony Geary, who won a record-breaking 8 Emmys in the Lead Actor category. As one half of the power couple ‘Luke and Laura,’ their popularity brought daytime television into the zeitgeist and created one of the genre’s most beloved super-couples. Our sympathies are with his family, colleagues, and loved ones.”

Fly with the angels my sweet man you were GH

It’s so true daytime wouldn’t have been the same without him.

Genie and Kin each experiencing an unusual dream. Just wow.

Started watching with my Mom when I was maybe 13. I am 64 now and still watch everyday.
Luke & Laura the best memories.

The one and only. I wasn’t a fan of Luke and Laura during their heyday. But during the 90s, I saw Luke grow and change into the most interesting character created on daytime tv. Anthony Geary brought so many layers to the character of Luke. He was the forever mischievous bad boy, the father who loved his children and fiercely cared for and loved the women and friends in his life. Thank you Tony Geary for many years of entertainment. I’ll say it again, the one and only.

If it wasn’t for Luke & Laura in 1978 that i started watching, i would never of watched it then and still watch it now. Rest in Peace Tony,,,,,,,,,rest in peace.

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

Published

on

By

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

Photo: JPI

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

GENERAL HOSPITAL: Jason Reconnects with Danny; Tristan Roberts Arrives in Port Charles, Lots of Nods to #16

Published

General Hospital’s 16,000th episode was packed with little reminders through points in today’s script that the ABC daytime drama series has set another milestone and it paved the way for the return of fan favorite and newly nominated Daytime Emmy Lead Actor nominee Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). The 16,000th episode also introduced viewers to the new surgeon in Port Charles Dr. Tristan Roberts played by Dean Geyer.

Here are the key takeaways and what went down on the July 13 episode: Tristan and Jason are seated next to each other on a plane heading to Port Charles. Throughout the flight, a beaten up Jason has flashbacks to being thrown into, and being held captive in a cell and tortured. It appears Jason is suffering from some form of PTSD from what he was put through after being dragged out of Port Charles by the WSB months ago.

As the plane prepares to land, Tristan tells Jason there would be a car waiting for him once they land and to enjoy the rest of his life. Later, Tristan arrives at the nurses and doctors hub at GH and approaches Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). He tells her his name and that he is the new surgeon on staff.

A REUNION PLUS A HEAD NURSE DEFENDS SONNY

Meanwhile, at the end of the episode, Jason is outside the Quartermaine boathouse looking bewildered when he runs into Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), who is so thrilled to see his father, and the two hugs each other as tears are shed.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth tells Sonny (Maurice Benard) that he thinks its a great idea for him to get the 16th seat on the hospital board, but when it comes times to convince Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) of that, things go awry when Tracy, Laura and Sonny try to work things out. After Tracy launches into Sonny about killing Alan and Monica’s son AJ, Sonny walks away dejected.

Next, Sonny runs into Elizabeth, where he informs her what happened with Tracy. So what’s a head nurse to do? Elizabeth marches into the conference room and reminds Tracy of all the different donations and ways Sonny has contributed to the hospital from the Stone Cates AIDS wing, to the Michael Corinthos Center for Pediatric Head Injuries as well as his constant support each year for the GH Nurses’ Ball.

WSB WAR SCARS

Then, in one of the best parts for longtime fans of the series, Elizabeth talks about her legendary grandparents, Audrey and Steve Hardy and she tells Tracy they would have wanted Sonny to have a seat on the board for all the good that he has done for the hospital. After Elizabeth states Sonny’s case, things took a turn and Tracy and Sonny wound up shaking hands as Sonny is board member #16.

In the how great was it to see Anna (Finola Hughes) and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) together scenes department, the pick-up of last Friday’s cliffhanger is played out as the two former lovers fill each other in on what has gone down in their lives in the last several months including Valentin admitting he had been living in Carly’s attic, and Anna realizing she was kidnapped by Cullum, Sidwell and Cassius Faison.
